Good health depends on more than just having access to excellent health care. It also requires a healthy lifestyle. With summer almost here, I hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy all of the wonderful outdoor activities New Jersey has to offer.
Before you go outside to enjoy the sun, remember to protect your skin. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. In addition to using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses. And be sure to see a dermatologist regularly for skin checks—we have boardcertified melanoma experts here at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC).
Summer is the reward we get for being good the rest of the year. The sun is out (mostly), the world is green again and the beauties of our county become once more a metaphor for the brightest of life’s possibilities. So it’s fitting that Morris/Essex Health & Life marks this season each year with our Outdoors Issue.

You may work out five days a week and walk the fairways monthly, but truly taking care of yourself takes more—especially as you get older. For National Men’s Health Month in June, here are reminders keyed to your time of life. If you’re…
…in your 20s and 30s: Get your flu shot annually and update your tetanus booster every 10 years. Even if you don’t have a family history of high blood pressure or high cholesterol, know your numbers— have both tested every three to five years. Men under 26 who haven’t received a HPV (human papillomavirus vaccine) should consider this too. It’s important to develop a relationship with your primary care doctor, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), so he or she knows your lifestyle and family history.
…in your 40s and 50s: Keep up with regular flu shots and tetanus boosters, and consider the shingles vaccine when you reach 50. At 45, talk to your doctor about colon cancer screening—colonoscopies should be performed every 10 years—as well as regular prostatespecific antigen (PSA) tests, which can indicate prostate cancer. Increase blood-pressure checks to every year, and get cholesterol tests every four to six years, depending on individual risk factors. It’s also important to watch your lifestyle, the CDC says, as weight gain, alcohol consumption and smoking can increase your risk of developing cardiovascular problems.
…in your 60s or older: Flu and tetanus shots and the shingles vaccine are strongly encouraged, and the CDC recommends pneumococcal vaccine at age 65. Continue regular testing and screening for blood pressure, cholesterol, colon cancer. Be sure to keep up with cognition and mental health, the CDC notes, recommending gentle aerobic exercise, strength training and activities like tai chi.
When the Independence Day rolls around and you’ve finished your burgers and hot dogs, stretch out on a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a local fireworks display. Dog: Keelo, 9½ year old Peek-a-pom mix Owners: The Altman Family of Livingston Keelo was adopted from Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter when he was 18 months old. On Halloween in 2021, Keelo was with his “parents” at Morris County Park when they discovered Creature Comfort Pet Therapy. There were many dogs there, all of them calm, gentle and friendly, just like Keelo, so the Altmans knew that he’d make a good therapy dog. “Therapy dogs (and cats and rabbits) bring joy and love to people who might need a little extra in their lives,” says his “mom,” Cara Altman.
The dog now visits schools, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes in Morris and Essex counties as a certified therapy dog. Everyone smiles when they see him. Says Altman: “Keelo loves visiting his new human friends.”

Currently at war with a groundhog? Some deer? Other unwanted creatures that are ruining that garden you waited all year to tend to? Your hard-earned flowers needn’t become a critter’s afternoon snack. Below, check out creature-resistant plants that can help you withdraw the welcome mat in your backyard for various species:
Deer and rabbits tend to stay away from plants that are too fragrant, so bushes and plants such as butterfly bushes, lavender, yarrows, salvias, thyme and boxwoods (a type of evergreen) are safe in your yard. Daffodils, hellebores and aconitum are poisonous to deer, and rabbits will make a beeline in the other direction if they scout out foxglove, geranium and black-eyed Susan, as well as many of the plants mentioned above.
Squirrels avoid scents such as white pepper, black pepper, garlic and mint. You can buy a pepper spray and use it on your plants to keep them away, or plant certain flowers that will repel them naturally, such as daffodils, fritillaries, Galanthus, geraniums, hyacinths and lily of the valley. Alliums are a good un-vitation too, since they’re the flowering parts of onion, scallion and garlic plants, all major no-nos for those acorn-loving visitors.
Groundhogs also dislike the aroma of onion and garlic, herbs such as chive, basil, thyme, rosemary and oregano, as well as lavender-colored or scented flowers. They’re also not fans of larkspur, butterfly weed, bleeding heart or sweet alyssum.
Bugs can be discouraged, mosquitoes especially, by eliminating any water sources in your yard: bird baths, muddy puddles around drains or water collected in kids’ toys such as buckets or water tables. Make a conscious effort to empty out the puddles after big rainfalls. As far as vegetation is concerned, mosquitoes are not attracted to smelly flowers such as marigold and catmint, which typically bloom in late spring and last through the summer.

a passion. I moved to five new homes and reinvented each one. People loved how I designed my homes, and they would ask for help in their own homes. So in 2005 I decided to open an interior design business [Liz Murphy Designs]. But you had other passions. I wanted to do more exploring and experimenting. I thought, “What if I didn’t have a client to work for?” So I took art courses and became intrigued with painting and abstract expressionism. I was able to feed my soul with art. This was a new development for me. How do interior design and visual arts go hand-in-hand? You can turn up or down the volume of a space, just like you can in painting.
you’re going to work. And when you get into it, it’s intoxicating.
How did your art end up in Bill Clinton’s office?
An art curator, Heather Carter of Carter Fine Art Services, approached me and said she loved my work. She was curating a collection for Bill Clinton’s office and asked if I would mind if she showed him some of my work. She showed him, and he loved it. I have two pieces in the foyer of his office. What was it like to meet him?
He enjoys art, and we talked for 45 minutes. He wasn’t able to talk too deeply about abstract expressionism, but he did offer some very nice and complimentary comments.
Tell me about your teaching.
I work intimately with students, virtually and then in-studio. I tell them we’re here to play and not be captive to perfectionism. Art is about being loose and expressive and breaking down the perfectionist mentality. I teach that it’s OK to make mistakes, and don’t let inherited beliefs hold you back. I have a studio now that’s twice the size as my first one and I also do retreats. [She’s hosting an art and yoga retreat in July in Bali and another one this September in Walton, N.Y.]
Can anyone join you on an artist retreat?
Yes! There are primarily two types: those who say they love art but they’re not creative, and those who want to take deeper dives and further their artistic development. Everyone is welcome.
Where can people view your work?
Dignitaries entering former President Bill Clinton’s Harlem office are greeted by a pair of subtle abstract paintings by a Montclair resident. She’s 58-year-old Elizabeth Murphy, an English artist, interior designer and mother of two grown sons. Murphy says she’s still growing as an artist, and she’s happy to share what she’s learned along the way.
Where did you get your start?
I trained as a graphic designer in England, and I had creative roles that took me to Scotland, to London, to California, back to London again and finally to Montclair about 17 years ago. When I moved to New Jersey, a book publisher saw some of my work and I got to illustrate kids’ books for [actress-author]
Bernadette Peters.
What followed that opportunity?
To me, graphic design was more of a discipline than
Which is a more challenging role, artist or designer?
I’ve been a painter for the past four years, and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. You pour your emotions into every piece, but it’s very healing. I realized I needed a playground to do this, so I rented a studio at Manufacturers Village in East Orange in 2019. It’s like having a gym membership: If you show up,
I have a show at Sotheby’s [Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty] in Montclair, and I’m currently in contact with galleries in Milan. I also show all my work on Instagram [@lizmurphystudio], which is a great way to show your vulnerability and authenticity.
What inspires your art?
The work I do is not necessarily related to anything—it’s a souvenir of the journey I’m currently on. Your creativity flows when you’re open to ideas and observing all the time. This year, for the first time, I became enamored with some of the trees in Montclair, and I came up with an abstract interpretation of trees. It’s not “What did the trees look like?” but instead, “What did I feel when I saw the trees?” Some people may say, “My kids can do that!” when talking about expressionism. But it’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done because you show all your emotions and become vulnerable. It’s been a privilege to follow my heart.

For three years running, the Aortic Center of the Northern Department of Cardiac Surgery available at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) has been treating patients with aortic disease and aortic emergencies, a subsection of cardiothoracic surgery that requires specialized training and expertise. Led by Ioannis Loumiotis, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon and a member of the RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, this team diagnoses and treats aortic diseases—such as aortic aneurysm, a bulge in the aorta which carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body—either with medication and surveillance or surgery, when warranted. Here, Dr. Loumiotis discusses the treatment options and risk factors for aortic aneurysm and highlights the multidisciplinary team at CBMC’s Aortic Center that can treat such conditions.
Give us an overview of the Aortic Center of the Northern Department of Cardiac Surgery. What do you do and who do you treat?
This Aortic Center is a collaborative effort of multiple disciplines dedicated to providing specialized care to patients with aortic disease and aortic emergencies. We offer a range of treatment options, from medication and surveillance to surgery if necessary, in order to provide the best possible care to our patients. The team consists of experts in aortic surgery, vascular surgery, interventional cardiologists, interventional radiologists, advanced imaging experts and geneticists, to name a few.
What imaging do you use to diagnose aortic disease?
We use a variety of imaging techniques to diagnose aortic disease. All the studies are performed and read by specialized advanced aortic imaging experts. The most common imaging techniques used to diagnose an aortic aneurysm are EKG-gated computed
tomography scans (CT scans), cardiac MRIs and echocardiograms.
Who is at risk of aortic aneurysms?
There are two different kinds of aortic aneurysms that affect different patient populations. The “sporadic” aortic aneurysms that tend to appear in older patients with risk factors of atherosclerosis (eg. hypertension, smoking, hyperlipidemia) and the “heritable” aortic aneurysms tend to appear in younger patients. Heritable aortic disease can run in families (as familial aneurysms) or can be associated with specific genetic syndromes and connective tissue diseases.
Is age a risk factor?
Patients with a family history tend to present with aortic aneurysms when they’re younger than 50 or 55 years old. We do genetic testing for these patients, and aneu-
rysms for younger patients are much more life threatening. Older patients are more likely to have aortic aneurysms due to high blood pressure or a history of smoking.
Most aneurysms are asymptomatic, so how do we known if we have one? Since most aneurysms cause no symptoms (more than 90-95 percent of aneurysms are asymptomatic), they are often diagnosed incidentally during imaging for other reasons. In these cases, we immediately enroll the patient in our Aortic Center. From there, we make decisions on treatment based on their risk factors.
What non-invasive measures are used as a first line of treatment for aortic diseases?
This usually involves risk factor and lifestyle modifications. By far one of the most important measures is to control blood pressure. We try to control blood pressure with medications and encourage aerobic exercise. Reassurance is also important in managing patients with aortic aneurysms. We’re here for the patient and we keep close monitoring of the patient’s condition to ensure that treatment is effective.
What kind of surgeries do you perform for those that need it?

endovascular surgeries, from adult cardiac surgery to advanced aortic surgery down the whole length of the aorta. We also perform minimally invasive aortic surgery with small incisions (6-8 cm).
What determines the surgery you’ll perform on a patient?
The type of surgery we perform depends on the anatomy of the patient, the pathology of the disease and the technical complexity of the operation. We tailor our approach to each individual patient, ensuring the best possible outcome.
Why is it important to see a doctor who’s specially trained in aneurysms? Aortic disease can be life threatening, but it doesn’t have to be. So, it’s important to see a doctor who is specially trained and experienced in aortic disease. We take a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, looking at the patient as a whole and using multidisciplinary experts to make the best decisions. We also prefer to operate in an elective setting, rather than have it turn into an emergency.
What other cardiothoracic surgeries do you perform at the Aortic Center?
I perform the whole spectrum of advanced aortic surgery, open or endovascular and minimally invasive surgery. I also perform general adult cardiac surgery, like aortic and mitral valve repairs or replacements, coronary artery bypass surgery, arrythmia surgery and re-operative cardiac surgery. I’m also available for second opinions and secondary consultations.
Anything else you want us to know?
This Aortic Center of the Northern Division of Cardiac Surgery is a team effort with the infrastructure necessary to provide top treatment for complex aortic diseases. We are confident and proud of our ability to offer the best possible care for our patients.
The Emergency Department at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) is changing the way emergency medicine is delivered. The expanded and renovated Emergency Department (ED) provides an enhanced environment to receive care, accommodating up to 130,000 adult and pediatric patients annually. “In expanding the Emergency Department, our goal was not only to increase space but also to make the flow of treatment much easier so that patients are seen in a timely manner in an area appropriate to their needs,” says Eric Handler, D.O., chairman of emergency medicine at CBMC.
Beyond the expansion, what makes the CBMC ED unique is the new care model. “Since 2020, we were delivering disaster care, responding to the pandemic and all that it involved. Today, we are back to emergency medicine,” says Maria Aponte, R.N., administrative director of the CBMC Emergency Department. “The model for disaster medicine is very different from emergency medicine. With a focus on the patient being the center of the team, we have changed our care model resulting in a much better experience for our patients as well as our staff,” Dr. Handler adds.
Although New Jersey has been known for longer emergency room wait times on average, CBMC, part of RWJBarnabas Health, has dramatically improved processes throughout the ED and the hospital, resulting in efficiencies overall.
When you come to the CBMC ED, you’re met by a triage nurse who will ask for the reason of your visit along with five quick demographic questions. Once that’s completed, the information is placed in the computer and a bed is assigned. You’re then escorted into the area of the ED that corresponds to your specific care needs and a provider meets you in your room within 30 minutes of arrival. On average, during May 2023, patients were seeing a provider within 12 minutes of entering the facility. This change in procedure has eliminated waiting and cleared out the waiting room. Insurance information is collected while patients are awaiting test results.
The success of this model is due to a supportive administration and tremendous collaboration with leaders across the hospital to facilitate patient movement throughout the organization. As a result, patients are not only arriving in the ED and going directly into a room, their
stay within the department is shorter, and admitted patients are moving into a room on an inpatient unit much faster. “The success we’re having is only possible when all of the departments work together toward a common goal,” says Dr. Handler.
“Over the past year, we have filled our staff vacancies and no longer are using agency staff,” says Ms. Aponte. “During a time when healthcare staffing remains an industry-wide concern for both facilities and patients, having a fully staffed Emergency Department without the use of agency staff, has played a key role in improving our speed and efficiency,” adds Richard L. Davis, CBMC President and CEO.
The ED employs more than 60 providers, including board-certified emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, to care for incoming patients no matter what medical treatment they need. State-of-the-art equipment ensures CBMC’s
ED meets patients’ diverse medical needs with the necessary resources. Additionally, care is delivered in the area of the department most appropriate for the patient’s needs, including:
• A dedicated pediatric area with 10 beds for the youngest patients.
• A Rapid Diagnostic Unit with approximately 26 beds. These patients are monitored for further evaluation before being officially admitted or discharged. Patients may stay up to 24 hours and receive extensive testing during the stay.
• A 12-bed Fast Track area reserved for lower acuity patients. These patients typically require fewer emergent resources than patients experiencing significant pain or distress.
• An 11-bed acute care area for those patients needing immediate, life-saving intervention and the 50-bed main patient care area round out the ED, which can be quickly reconfigured as care needs dictate.

Ready to hop on the pickleball bandwagon?
This sport, which combines tennis, badminton and ping pong, is rising in popularity, and is currently played by more than 36.5 million people across the United States, according to a January 2023 report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals. And it’s an especially huge trend with seniors, as it’s a great way to get in some low-impact exercise (and to socialize with friends and neighbors!).
Here, Raphael Longobardi, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and athletic injuries at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) and a member of the RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, discusses common pickleball-related injuries in the upper extremities, how to minimize your risk and treatment options if symptoms persist.
What are the most common pickleball-related injuries you see in your practice?
Typically, there are a lot of overuse injuries with pickleball. The most common two are lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, and shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis. The differences in the weights of the balls, similarly to the different tensions on tennis racquets, creates a strain on the wrist extensors that can lead to these injuries. The most common lower extremity injury is ankle sprain, where you end up shifting laterally and rolling your ankle.
Who is most at risk for these injuries?
A lot of pickleball players are over the age of 45, so the issue with increasing age becomes flexibility. If you’re stiffer in your joints, you’re going
to have an increased chance of muscle strains.
How are these injuries treated?
Usually, it’s a combination of rest, rehabilitation and oral anti-inflammatory medication, depending on the severity and how long symptoms last. Sometimes people get injured and play through [the pain], thinking it’ll resolve in a week or so. You can always start with the RICE technique (Rest, Ice, Compression, Evaluation) and see if it gets better. If not, then come get checked out.
What do you say to people who are injured or in pain from playing sports but may be resistant to seeing a doctor?
Here’s how I look at it: You have a sore throat; you decide you’re going to sit this one out and it goes away on its own, so you don’t need to go to a doctor. If it gets worse after a few days or you have a fever, then you’re thinking you should go see a doctor because it could be something more serious. You need to feel like you need to go see someone because the treatment you’re doing at home isn’t working. Our purpose as sports medicine doctors is to help people return to a level of activity that they haven’t been able to return to on their own.
When is surgery required for a pickleball injury?
Surgery for pickleball injuries is rare because there’s not a lot of overhead serving involved with this sport. But the older age group tends to have overuse injuries of the shoulder that may lead to surgery. For chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) that doesn’t respond to conser-
vative measures with oral or injectable anti-inflammatory meds and rehabilitation, then those sometimes require surgical treatment.
How can we prevent pickleball injuries?
Injury prevention for any sport starts out with being in good physical condition. This means being mobile, flexible and strong. That really is the No. 1 recipe for preventing overuse injuries.
Are there any specific warm-ups you recommend that can reduce the chance of injury?
Try a dynamic hamstring stretch, a core stretch or a quad stretch with high knees. You’ll also want to stretch your upper extremities with some shoulder and wrist stretches.
In general, how do you treat sports-related injuries at your practice?
I’ve been doing sports orthopedics for 27 years. The first thing with any treatment is looking at the injuries, what physical demands the patient has and what they’re looking to accomplish. It’s addressing the issue with respect to their recovery, their expectation and when they want to return to play. A typical overuse injury can take about 2 to 4 weeks to resolve with rehab and anti-inflammatories.
How do you work with the multidisciplinary team at CBMC to treat common sports injuries?
We have a team of great people here. If a patient needs rehab, we send them to physical therapy. If they need surgery, they’ll come see me. Each member of our orthopedic sports medicine team is equally trained and has experience in these types of injuries. If you have questions or problems, get in touch. This is what our department excels at.
Serious injuries resulting from this up-and-coming sport aren’t too common.
Still, an orthopedic surgeon from Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center shares his tips on typical pickleball-related injuries and how to prevent them.Raphael Longobardi, M.D.

Cycling is top-notch exercise, and a great way to see what our counties have to offer. The impressive Patriots’ Path is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise and extends across the entirety of Morris County, from East Hanover to Washington Township. It has 55 miles of primary trails, 35 miles of side trails as well as riverside trails for hiking and biking, plus plenty of open green spaces to enjoy. It links several watersheds, historic sites and other points of interest in the area, and connects the Lenape Trail in Essex County to Allamuchy State Park in Sussex County.
Morris County’s Budd Lake is the spot for schools of yellow perch, crappies, white catfish and sunfish just waiting to tug at your line (make a day of it with their skiing, tubing and wakeboarding too). There’s also the 2,600acre Lake Hopatcong, which boasts some of the state’s best freshwater fishing. You’ll be sure to reel in bass, hybrid stripers and walleye, to name a few varietals. Over in Essex County, reel in some trout (both rainbow and largemouth) at Verona Park Lake. This smaller body of water (about 13 acres) is great for amateur fishers and kids looking to cast a line from the shore.
Don’t forget that a New Jersey fishing license is required for anyone between the ages of 16 and 70. Fees are $22.50 for ages 16 to 64 and $12.50 for 65 to 69. Visit dep.nj.gov/njfw/fishing/freshwater/buy-a-license to obtain a license.

Memories will be made when a few thoughtful details take an outdoor patio party from good to great.
When the time is right and the weather propitious, you won’t have second thoughts about bringing your get-togethers outside. Whether it’s a graduation brunch, a Father’s Day barbecue or a latesummer twilight supper, festivities celebrated in the fresh air can be unforgettably enjoyable in a distinctive way. If a leaf happens to blow into the soup, that’s an extra laugh—and who can have too many of those? For the keen of eye, the next few pages abound in patio-party inspiration—along with a few practical ideas for a perfect setting for you and your guests.
A slatted screen around the outdoor kitchen not only creates intimacy and privacy, but also provides shade from the midday sun and protection from the elements when the weather is less appealing.
This page: Any outdoor dining area can feel homey with a few simple touches. Wall décor brings the inside out, while an informal setting with cocktail glasses and a floral centerpiece dresses up even the most relaxed tables. An outdoor kitchen area helps the host avoid the mess that comes from prepping and carrying food—whether it’s a warm basket of bread, seafood apps or a main course—from inside the house. Opposite page: Napkin rings and chargers are an easy way to elevate the vibe of any casual alfresco meal.
Any discussion of courses we love usually ends with confessions about the ones we’ve not played yet. Heck, one of my golfing buddies, Peter, has played 94 of the GolfDigest Top 100, and even he can rattle off 10+ courses he still needs to add to his list. But it would be a crying shame to go much longer without trying the five courses offered here. These special places are accessible to all golfers, as they are public. Most you’ve heard of, but they may include a surprise or two. And while some are handier to reach than others, all are worth the trip. There are nine-hole courses and even a putting course that in my opinion are just as much fun as the classic 18-hole layouts. Golf should be about the experience, not the number of holes you play.
A visit to Pinehurst is de rigueur, as there are at least six courses here that one should experience. My first priority would be Pinehurst course No. 2, a Donald Ross masterpiece that has seen numerous renovations, with the last one completed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011.
Following the elimination of the Bermuda grass rough and the introduction of native hardpan sand with wiregrass, the course has a more natural feel and offers a great challenge for both men and women, as evidenced by the 2014 U.S. Open.
A caddie here will increase your enjoyment of this great tract.
Pinehurst course No. 4 has recently benefited from a wonderful renovation by Gil Hanse, and now it’s a worthy companion to No. 2. A fun fact here is that Hanse occupied the home of Ross while he was on the property. Hanse and his team also created a cool nine-hole short course called “The Cradle,” which is an ideal complement to other courses in the Pinehurst complex.
When you arrive at the resort you will see what was the first miniature golf course in the U.S. Created in 1916 by James Barber, it offers the entire family a fun introduction to this historic resort.
To be honest, there’s also another reason I love visiting here: The pancakes at the Pinehurst Resort are world-class.
Then there’s the Badger State, with both old and new courses to try. For the latter, it’s time again to thank Mike Keiser (the developer of Bandon Dunes) along with Craig Haltom, who recognized that this land had unlimited potential. And thank you, Michael and Chris Keiser (Mike Keiser’s sons), for delivering what Golf Digest recognized as the “best new course” when it debuted six years ago.
Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were entrusted with the responsibility of designing the first course, and while they moved more earth here than at Sand Hills, their award-winning private course in Nebraska, the Sand Valley course fits the land like a great jigsaw puzzle. The sand here is employed in many different ways, from bunkers to waste areas, and I can assure you that you will use every club in your bag.
The second course at Sand Valley is Mammoth Dunes by David McLay Kidd, and it showcases Kidd’s maturity and style. The 14th hole was created with the design help of a Golf Digest “armchair architect” contest. Brian Silvernail, a graphic designer from Florida, presented the winning entry, and it’s a beauty. This drivable downhill par 4 has a sloping fairway and a Redan-style green (unusual for a par 4 hole). If you’re skilled or lucky enough to drive into the speed slot on the right, you’ll be rewarded with a ball close to the green. Add a 17-hole par 3 course (by Coore and Crenshaw) and you’ll have a perfect couple of days of great golf and fun.
“Bucket list”? That’s too longterm. Grab your clubs and hurry to these great places as soon as you can.
Make this your next Wisconsin stop. Lawsonia Links, designed in the 1930s by Chicago duo William Langford and Theodore Moreau, is a must-visit for sure. There are a pair of 18-hole course, Links and Woodlands. The former will test your short game, as the elevated greens and mounds will challenge your shot-making skills. The fairways and greens on the Links course may feel wide open, but don’t feel free to spray your shots anywhere. Pro tip: You’ll want to practice your bunker shots before arriving.
While playing Links requires great concentration, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the course’s views and vibes. While you’re on the back nine, you have a clear view of every hole of the front nine—it’ll make you feel like your foursome is joining another group. The oldschool appearance, from the architecture to the clubhouse, is a throwback in time and brings you back to the golden era of golf.
The Links course is also an example of the effects of tree removal. When Craig Haltom and Oliphant Golf took over the property in 2010, the course was overgrown with trees with portions of its large greens buried in rough. But careful rehabilitation turned it into today’s gem, and the property continues to improve each year.
With five distinctly different golf courses and a great par 3 track, this resort is the perfect starting point. Every golfer owes a debt to Mike Keiser, who had the courage and conviction to find an area on the Oregon coast that was ideal for a unique golf experience.
The first course, Bandon Dunes by David McLay Kidd, opened in 1999 and showcases this property’s magnificent dunes and ocean views. When Tom Doak’s Pacific Dunes course debuted in 2001, it was amazing that a second course could be created on the same land with such a different feel. Then in 2005 came the opening of Bandon Trails, fashioned by architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, and we all started to believe that this was indeed a special area that could be developed in many different ways.
Old Macdonald (my favorite) opened in 2015. Here designers Doak and Jim Urbina approached their task by asking, “What would the great Charles Blair Macdonald have created on this land?”—Macdonald being one of the premier course architects of the early 20th century. Old Macdonald is a great walk (all of the courses at Bandon should be experienced walking) on a huge canvas of land. For example, the first hole provides an expansive fairway to hit, and it’s only when you arrive for your second shot that you realize the difficulty lies ahead with an elevated green.
Oregon again? Sure—the state has some of the best land in the country for golf, and Silvies Valley Ranch, situated 300+ miles from Portland and 200 miles from Boise, makes my list, as it’s big (100,000+ acres) and offers many activities beyond golf.
When the goats (nearly 3,000 of them) outnumber the local residents, you know this is not a typical golf course. Oh, and by the way, you can even use one of the goats as a caddie, as Akbar Chisti, the co-founder of Seamus Golf, has designed a unique golf bag specifically for this purpose!
Architect Dan Hixson created two 18-hole layouts, which are played on alternate days, allowing you to play the course in both directions. Hixson’s excellent par 3 layouts are especially great and add to the fun of playing here.
Don’t forget to sample the farm-to-table cuisine at Silvies and enjoy the many available non-golf activities, such as hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Does this exhaust my list of great courses? No way—there are many more, with Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., and Pebble Beach in Pebble Beach, Calif., as additional standouts I must mention. It’s also great to play a course that has recently hosted a major, because when you watch the tournament you’ll have enhanced knowledge of the venue. But the halfdozen courses I’ve described here are great for starters. Make sure, if you can, that they don’t linger long on your “not yet” list.
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
For the hollandaise sauce
n 3 large egg yolks
n 2 sticks plus 5 Tbs. unsalted butter diced, at room temperature
n salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
n squeeze fresh lemon juice
For the eggs Florentine
n 2 Tbs. unsalted butter
n ¼ cup heavy cream
n 10 cups baby spinach leaves, washed
n salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
n freshly ground nutmeg
n 2 Tbs. distilled white vinegar
n 4 large eggs
n 4 slices buttered toast
n cress or chives finely chopped, for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
Place a saucepan of water over medium heat. You want the water to be simmering, not boiling. Place a heatproof bowl containing the egg yolks over but not touching the pan of water. Start whisking immediately.
Slowly add the butter to the egg yolks, a few pieces at a time, whisking vigorously until it’s incorporated before adding more butter. Keep the temperature beneath the butter on low and take your time, adding the butter slowly. The key thing here is low and slow so the eggs do not scramble. Instead, you want to emulsify the egg and butter together.
Keep cooking and stirring until the hollandaise sauce has thickened enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. If it gets too thick, add a splash of cold water. Season to taste with salt and pepper and add a squeeze of lemon juice for a touch of sharpness to smooth out that creamy richness.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Pour in the heavy cream, and let simmer for a minute or so, until it starts to reduce and thicken. Throw in the spinach leaves and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the leaves have wilted. Pull the skillet from the heat and season the spinach with salt, pepper and the nutmeg.
Fill a deepish saucepan with about 3 inches of water and bring it to a gentle, not rolling boil. Add the vinegar and stir to make a whirlpool effect. Crack the 4 eggs carefully into the pot. The whirlpool and the vinegar will help each egg white stay together rather than stretch into some ghastly amoeba-like shape.
Allow the eggs to gently simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. You’re aiming for a wobbly but well-cooked white with a runny yolk. Using a slotted spoon, gently move the eggs to a paper-towel-lined plate to soak up the excess water.
Top the buttered toast with the creamed spinach. If you’ve got the time and the inclination, you can cut the toast into circles just slightly larger than the egg using a biscuit cutter. Carefully place an egg on top of each stack and spoon a generous helping of hollandaise on top. Garnish the eggs Florentine with the cress or chives.
Eggs Florentine provides a nice balance of protein, fat and fiber that will satisfy your hunger and keep you fuller for longer. For a heart-healthy version, skip the butter on the toast, sauté the spinach without the cream and just drizzle the hollandaise sauce over the top!”

Yields 8 servings
INGREDIENTS:
n 4 eggs
n ½ cup heavy whipping cream
n ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
n 1 tsp. olive oil
n ½ cup chopped onions
n ¼ cup chopped green peppers
n ¼ cup chopped red peppers
n ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
n ½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
n 1 tsp. seafood seasoning
n salt and pepper to taste
n 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust
n 8 oz. lump crab meat
n 8 oz. raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Unroll the crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Cover the pie crust with parchment paper and load pie weights or dry beans over the paper and pie plate. This will anchor the crust as it bakes. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove the pie crust and set aside.
Combine the eggs, cream and almond milk in a large bowl. Heat a skillet on medium-high heat and add in the olive oil, red peppers, onions and green peppers. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
Remove the vegetables from the skillet and add them to the bowl with the eggs and milk.
Add in the lump crab, shrimp and both of the cheeses. Stir to combine. Pour the egg and seafood filling over the pie crust. Bake for 20 minutes.
Adjust the temperature to 300°F and bake an additional 15-30 minutes until the quiche has set. The edges should appear firm, and there should be a slight jiggle in the center of the quiche. Add additional bake time if necessary. Allow the quiche to cool for at least 20 minutes prior to slicing.
To help balance out the fat, calories and protein, pair this dish with a generous salad of bitter, dark leafy greens such as arugula and vinaigrette to provide fiber and micronutrients. If you regularly fill half your plate with fruit and vegetables, any food can fit into a healthy eating pattern, even rich and delicious ones like this!”

TO HELP YOU FIND SOME OF THE BEST ATTORNEYS IN MORRIS COUNTY, across 34 specialties, Morris/Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate an online peer-vote process and create a Top Morris County Lawyer list. Attorneys throughout the county were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their practice areas and whom they would seek out for particular legal needs.
DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published top vote getter had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the State of New Jersey regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a lawyer’s current, active registration, he or she was excluded from the list. In addition, any lawyer who has been disciplined for an infraction by the State of New Jersey regulatory board was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to Morris/Essex Health & Life for its final review.
We recognize that there are many good attorneys who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within Morris County.

TO HELP YOU FIND SOME OF THE BEST ATTORNEYS IN ESSEX COUNTY, across 31 specialties, Morris/Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate an online peer-vote process and create a Top Essex County Lawyer list.
This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within Essex County.

DEB’S FAMILY LAW PRACTICE INCLUDES adoptions, child and adult guardianships, divorces and custody matters, relocations, premarital agreements, post and mid-marriage agreements, enforcement of divorce judgments and appeals. Some cases must go to trial, like the international kidnapping case that Deb tried over a 12-day period in Bergen County Superior Court. Cases involving custody and parenting rights must sometimes go to trial, as well, to promote and preserve a child’s best interest. Most cases, however, resolve amicably utilizing alternative dispute resolution processes such as arbitration, mediation and collaborative law. Deb is frequently retained as an arbitrator, mediator and collaborative law practitioner and is also listed on the Court-approved roster of economic mediators, is certified in collaborative law and serves on the New Jersey Supreme Court Complementary Dispute Resolution Committee. Deb is a former President of the Morris County Bar Association and the Morris County Bar Foundation. In continued efforts to give back, Deb volunteers with Susan G. Komen, an organization dedicated to eliminating breast cancer.

Google the new Morristown restaurant Ju-Ichi and you’ll find the phrase “best sushi in New Jersey.” There’s no shame in making such a tall claim, but you’d better do more than talk the talk. So while I wasn’t prepared to do a statewide comparative raw-fish circuit, I did want to stop by and check out what the proprietors here (affiliated with Tadashi in State College, Pa.) had to offer besides self-esteem.
A friend and I visited Ju-Ichi on a rainy Saturday. Located a stone’s throw from the Morristown Green, the casual sit-down restaurant seems an ideal place to take a date, to celebrate with friends or to chow down whenever you’re hungry. The staff is uber-friendly: Maggie, our server, performed like a gracious dinner-party host, chatting us up while explaining the variety of oils, herbs and spices set on each table.
Neither my dining companion nor I needed the extra condiments for our appetizers, both of which were flavored and presented to perfection. Leading off was a bright green seaweed salad, which featured toasty sesame seeds and a perfect ratio of sesame oil, sweet rice wine and vinegar. I’m always amazed by how these complex flavors can mesh into such a simple dish.
The same is true for the pork rib confit, which we selected from a tempting selection of hot appetizers. (I vowed to return to try the grilled salted mackerel and hot oil pork belly.) Three fall-off-the-bone ribs were marinated and cooked in a sweet-and-savory sauce that would make any barbecue pitmaster proud. It took some coaxing, but I convinced my friend to surrender the third finger-licking-good rib to yours truly. Full of flavor and tender, these ribs—and hungry diners— deserve an entrée-sized portion.
But Ju-Ichi’s menu is already loaded with main courses, from ramen and udon noodle soups to rice dishes and, of course, sushi. While the springtime weather called for a hot bowl of soup, I already had wide eyes for a thick-noodle udon. I went with the pork kimchi variety, a massive bowl of pork and chicken broth filled with thinly sliced pork, spicy kimchi, littleneck clams, seaweed and other ingredients. A little splash of hot chili oil and a couple of drops of sriracha were the perfect finishing touches to an otherwise flawless soup. My friend’s beef udon was similarly on point, the star of the dish being the thin slices of prime beef. Though she declined to kick it up a notch with extra spices, her soup (a fish broth base) was tasty nonetheless.
To accompany our noodle dishes, a pair of magnificently plated sushi rolls adorned our table. But we couldn’t let them be a treat solely for the eyes—I dug in first. The riceless sashimi roll from the “signature roll” menu was generously filled with spicy tuna, yellowtail, seaweed salad and asparagus and then topped with eel, salmon, roe and avocado. We also shared a delightful soft-shell crab roll, a choice from the eatery’s selection of classic rolls. Both were palate pleasers, but worthy of the title “best” in the Garden State? Ju-Ichi is only a few months old, so the jury’s still out.
We passed on dessert (the limited options include a variety of ice cream flavors) and sipped hot tea to cap the meal. Maggie chatted with us as we were winding down, admitting that she hadn’t thought we’d finish every bite at the table due to the sheer volume of food. It’s easy, I told her, when everything is that good.

“This photo was taken at Tourne County Park in Boonton, the first hike after my rescue dog, Konan, had recovered from an injury. It was my first time doing this trail and at this park. The weather was nice, crisp breeze, clear skies, perfect. I wanted to document through photos moments of positivity, peace and finding happiness. I love having my dogs as companions in enjoying nature. It’s a special bond between a pet and its owner, when they’re out there together in the woods.”
