things going on in this special space. Whether you are into music, dance, theater or art, you can find something to pique your interest. When was the last time you stopped to appreciate the beautiful (and fun) sculptures that dot the Mueller landscape? If you are like me, you have wondered about the backstory that goes along with them. Well, here you have it! A quick explanation about our very own whimsical creatures! With January also comes cold weather, at least by Texas standards. Even when the temperatures dip down, we can still enjoy homegrown herbs— but indoors. Our very own gardening enthusiast, Haylee Killebrew, teaches us how. And if all these new experiences wear you out, there is nothing like a quick pick-me-up from Talisman Coffee at the Mueller Farmers’ Market. This issue, we learn about this multigenerational business and how a family’s dedication and attention to every detail creates their special brew. The year is off to a great start, but I want to hear from you! Have a story idea you would like to share with your fellow Mueller residents? Have a business that you would like to advertise? MEET ME AT THE MARKET

Coffee in Their Blood Fernando Alvarado and his sister, Johanna, build on a family heritage to grow coffee in Nicaragua and roast it in Austin.

Talisman Coffee’s popular space in Mueller’s Farmers’ Market is supplemented by a partnership that also provides coffee through fellow market vendor Mum Foods. At Talisman, customers can have a cup prepared or take home freshly roasted coffee for brewing at home, cheerfully served by proprietors Fernando Alvarado (above right) and his sister, Johanna.

Whether it’s a brisk January morning or a scorching July afternoon, visitors to the Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller need their coffee! That much is obvious by the line that regularly forms at Talisman Coffee. You may prefer the refreshing cold brew or the flavorful hot coffee, but the most welcoming part of a visit is the warm smile and friendly “hello” you get from Fernando Alvarado and his sister, Johanna Alvarado Barker. They are passionate about the coffee they serve because they

are carrying on a tradition begun by their grandparents, Ernesto and Carmen Alvarado, who first began growing coffee at the farm they started, Finca El Talisman, in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. This farm stayed active until 1979, when it was lost during the Nicaraguan Revolution. Fast-forward to 2015, when Yuri and Johanna Alvarado, the next generation, fulfilled a lifelong dream by returning to Matagalpa and purchasing 36 acres near the original family farm.

MEET ME AT THE MARKET

“We are passionate about preserving the quality of the coffee in every step of the process, from seed to cup.” - Fernando Alvarado

Sustainably Grown

In a nod to the previous generation, the family called the new site El Talisman. They allotted 20 acres to grow coffee and set aside 11 for conservation. There they began growing the coffee they sell today. Their goal was to produce smallbatch coffee grown and harvested with respect and sustainability in mind. “Our coffee is all shade grown, handpicked, naturally processed and slow dried,” Fernando says. “It’s grown responsibly in a sustainable ecosystem shaded by fruit trees and

other native tree species, which in turn supports a diverse flora and fauna.” Although grown in Nicaragua, the coffee is roasted right here in Austin by Fernando himself, assuring that each small batch is as fresh as possible. “In our cup profile, you will find hints of ripe peaches and plums with notes of cocoa and brown sugar, a smooth body and a pleasant mouth feel,” he says. “We are passionate about preserving the quality of the coffee in every step of the process, from seed to cup.”

Brew and Barbecue

Roasting coffee and working at the Mueller Farmers’ Market keeps Fernando busy, but he doesn’t stop there. In the past year, he combined efforts with friend and fellow market vendor Geoffrey Ellis to open a coffee space within Ellis’ Mum Foods. You can come for the barbecue and stay for some coffee (and even some homemade cookies and baked goods)—or come just to savor a latte or specialty coffee. Even with everything else going on, the Mueller Farmers’ Market holds a special place in Fernando’s heart. “We feel so lucky to be a part of the Mueller market,” he says. “If it wasn’t for Mueller, our business would not have become as successful as it is today.” You can find Talisman Coffee outside the indoor pavilion on the corner along Aldrich Street near the dog park. There you can also find Fernando and Johanna with big smiles serving up their family brew. Whether you buy the beans by the bag to brew at home or have it prepared for you, a cup of Talisman coffee never disappoints. One sip and you can almost taste the family history infused into each cup.

The Alvarado family’s 36-acre property in Nicaragua is dedicated to sustainability, with about a third of the land set aside for conservation. Coffee grown on 20 acres is produced using sustainable practices and is handpicked, naturally processed and slow dried. Above right: Johanna Alvarado Barker handles some of the beans grown at the site.

From instruction to performance, programs at the PAC enlighten students about fine arts including music, dance, theater and a range of behindthe-scenes roles such as lighting, set design and costuming.

Nestled along Barbara Jordan Boulevard is a Mueller gem that many

residents don’t even know about: the Austin Independent School District (AISD) Performing Arts Center (PAC). Youth from all around Austin come to the PAC to study, learn and perform. In January 2015, the PAC opened its doors in the still-fledgling Mueller

community. Its mission was to provide a platform where students could showcase their talents. Few could have imagined the impact this would have on the growth and development of fine arts in Austin. In just a few short years, this state-of-the-art facility has blossomed into a dynamic space for cultural activity.

JANUARY 2024

| 17 1/8/24 12:34 PM

A Cultural Hub Currently, the PAC educates more than 73,000 students across such performance disciplines as theater, music and dance. The facility’s programs also emphasize teaching students who are interested in behind-the-scenes roles such as set design, lighting, stage management and even costume design. As Phillip Taylor, the PAC’s director of fine arts explains, “The Performing Arts Center stands

as a testament to the thriving fine arts community within AISD. By fostering creativity, innovation and student involvement, the PAC has become more than just a venue—it is a catalyst for the growth and performance of talent within the district.” The PAC also plays a vital role in the vibrant Mueller community, serving as a cultural hub that enriches the lives of residents and visitors alike through performances by student

and professional organizations. “Its integration into the Mueller community fosters a diverse and engaging environment,” Taylor says. The facility boasts the 1,200-seat Main Hall used for theater and concert productions; the 200seat Black Box Theatre for more intimate musical, dance and poetry performances; and smaller spaces for educational and meeting uses. There is even a recording studio and a fully stocked costume closet.

Year-Round Programs Every inch of the PAC facility is used, including the lobby and hallways, which come to life with student artwork each March for Youth Art Month. Throughout the year, the PAC has various district-wide dance, choir and music events and competitions. It also provides a venue for traveling performance groups and shows that choose Mueller as their preferred place to perform. But the crown jewel of the PAC’s

offerings each year is the Summer Theater Series (STS), Taylor says. “Our STS is a student-produced spectacle featuring over 200 students from 35-plus campuses,” he says. “During STS, students take charge of every aspect—from designing costumes and sets to managing lights, sound and props. The series has presented iconic productions like ‘The Addams Family’ and ‘Mary Poppins,’ with the eagerly anticipated ‘Shrek the Musical’ slated for the summer of 2024.”

The AISD PAC encourages Mueller residents to get involved either as visitors or as donors. It connects significantly with the Mueller community that the facility calls home and strives to be an integral part of the cultural fabric of the neighborhood. To find out about performances and events, visit the AISD PAC website, www.austinisd.org/arts/pac, or connect through social media using @austinisdpac.

Keep Your

Garden Growing Cultivate fragrant herbs indoors during winter months with four easy steps. BY HAYLEE KILLEBREW

As the New Year unfolds, bringing the

promise of fresh beginnings, the anticipation of spring remains a few months away. While nature takes its time, we can find growth opportunities indoors. Consider brightening up your home with an indoor herb garden. Adding a touch of nature and warmth to your surroundings will transform those winter blues into a gentle celebration of homegrown coziness. These steps can help ensure your fragrant plants get a healthy start and thrive while you await the arrival of more inviting outdoor temperatures.

JANUARY 2024

20-23 Mueller_HerbGarden_0124_Final.indd 21

| 21 1/8/24 12:37 PM

Selection

Your indoor herb gardening journey begins with choosing herbs that align with your culinary preferences. Opt for those you love to cook with, such as basil, chive, oregano, dill, mint, parsley and cilantro. Each herb brings its unique flavor profile to your kitchen, enhancing your culinary creations and contributing to the vibrant diversity of your indoor herb garden. Take a moment to consider your favorite dishes and the herbs that complement them.

Planting

The key to achieving success in your indoor herb garden is proper planting. When starting your planting journey, choose pots equipped with holes at the base to ensure effective water drainage. Select a well-draining soil mix, especially if you’re growing from seeds. If using seeds, employ a seed starting mix and adhere to the instructions on the packet for the appropriate seed depth. This thoughtful approach to planting sets the foundation for a thriving indoor herb garden.

22 | MUELLER 20-23 Mueller_HerbGarden_0124_Final.indd 22

1/8/24 12:37 PM

Watering

Regular watering is essential—but be mindful not to overdo it. A great way to avoid overwatering is through bottom watering, achieved by placing your potted plants in a larger container of water and letting them soak up water through the drainage holes. Leave the potted plant to soak for 30 minutes, then remove and allow excess water to drain out. Once the excess has drained, place your herbs back in a sunny window to soak up some rays.

Harvesting

Pruning and harvesting play pivotal roles in fostering robust growth and maintaining the bushiness and flavor of your herbs. For most herbs, embracing a haircut approach is beneficial since they are cut-and-come-again, allowing for continuous harvest. However, this isn’t the case for all herbs—for example, cilantro and parsley only allow for one harvest. When cultivating herbs from the mint family such as basil and oregano, harvesting techniques become essential. Instead of randomly cutting stems, focus on gently pinching off the top leaves just above a set of leaves or branching point. This encourages the plant to branch out, resulting in a bushier and more compact appearance. Consistent top pinching not only provides fresh leaves for your culinary ventures but also stimulates the development of lateral shoots. This branching pattern enhances the aesthetic appeal of your indoor herb garden while ensuring a continuous supply of tender leaves.

Haylee Killebrew began writing for Mueller magazine shortly after she moved into the community in 2023.

Art for Everyone The story behind Mueller’s iconic, distinctive and charming public sculptures

24 | MUELLER 24-27 Mueller_Sculptures_Final.indd 24

1/8/24 12:43 PM

Monsters, scary insects and giant sunflowers: All can be imposing and even intimidating. But they also can be friendly and welcoming, as is the case with our very own array of sculptures in Mueller. Take a stroll through the Southwest Greenway, Mueller Lake Park or Jessie Andrews Park, or even a ride along I-35, and you will see iconic sculptures and art gracing Mueller’s landscape. But where did these beauties come from, and why are they here? Fanciful Creatures Three of the sculptures are the work of Houston artist Dixie Friend Gay. Initially, Gay proposed an installation of pink buffalo to sit along the I-35 corridor flanking Mueller. The idea for this was a nod to the local area that was

once a corridor of migration but has since been paved over. That particular work was not selected for the interstate highway location, but the city remembered Gay and came calling when the interior parks of Mueller were being planned. Gay’s first piece selected for Mueller is named “Arachnophillia.” This imposing 23-by-31-foot work of steel is a seemingly friendly spider that puts one appendage forward in a gesture welcoming people into the Southwest Greenway. Gay next created a community favorite: our dragon, Nessy. This sculpture is smaller at 16 by 30 feet, with a whimsical, happy demeanor inspired by mythological water creatures. Gracing the entrance to Mueller Lake Park and directly

across the street from Thinkery, Nessy’s colorful glass mosaic tiles beckon children and adults alike to stop by and visit—or even climb on her. Nessy has become like an iconic keeper of the neighborhood. The last of Gay’s contributions to Mueller is Ocho, the guardian octopus. Draped over the utility building at Jessie Andrews Park, Ocho sprawls 20 feet and watches over the park. Inspired by movie monsters of the 1950s and ’60s, Ocho was a collaborative effort between Gay, Blue Genie Art Industries and fellow Austin artist Lars Stanley. Ocho is crafted of forged metal and coated with color shift paint. The abdomen changes color from teal to purple in a manner surprisingly similar to how an actual octopus camouflages itself.

Take a stroll through the Southwest Greenway, Mueller Lake Park or Jessie Andrews Park, or even a ride along I-35, and you will see iconic sculptures and art gracing Mueller’s landscape.

Natural Forms Turning back to the trail that winds through the Southwest Greenway, the natural beauty of the restored prairie in this part of the neighborhood embraces two additional Mueller statues: “Wigwam” and “Pollen Grain.” These sibling statues are the creation of local sculptor Chris Levack. “Wigwam” sits 17 feet in the air and serves as the culmination point for multiple native grasses and wildflowers. “Pollen Grain” represents a microscopic grain of pollen—even though it stands 14 feet tall, more than 700,000 times the size of an actual grain of pollen! Finally, a discussion of Mueller’s art installations would not be complete without returning to the I-35 corridor. This space raises eyebrows among

many people driving the highway. Are the sculptures umbrellas? Satellite dishes? What exactly are they? They are blue sunflowers designed by Massachusetts-based artists Mags Harries and Lajos Héder to serve as an artistic nod to sustainability and a means to generate solar power. Although they no longer light up at night, these flowers still generate energy to help sustain the business district along Barbara Jordan Boulevard. No matter your artistic taste, there is something for everyone in Mueller. You may want to take a deeper dive into the history of our incredible Mueller art or grab a friend and do a fun hike through the neighborhood, visiting all the structures. Or maybe you would rather simply sit in any one of Mueller’s parks and take in the beauty surrounding you. The choice is yours. Just enjoy the beauty that is uniquely Mueller.

Energize Your 2024

These simple changes can supercharge your physical, mental and cardiovascular health in the year ahead. Resolution: 2024 will be your

year—the one in which you get out of any rut you may be in and create new, healthier habits. Your two key tools: movement and food. Exercise improves cardiovascular health and boosts energy. Food is fuel, and the right foods provide nutrients the body needs to repair, heal and stay strong. Here’s how to kick-start your journey. START SMALL. People often 1 see the best results when they

A SUPPORT 3 CREATE SYSTEM. Having an

exercise buddy makes it easier to keep going, as does using a personal trainer. Trainers often can provide one-on-one or small-group guidance. If you have a condition such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease or Parkinson’s, or have had weight loss surgery, you may be able to find sessions tailored for people with those health concerns. HABIT 4 TRY STACKING. This process

take small steps. Choose goals that meet criteria in the acronym SMART: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Timely. It’s usually not enough to say, “I want to lose weight” or “I want to be healthier,” experts say. Instead, think more along the lines of, “I want to lose 20 pounds by next January by doing X, Y and Z.”

builds new habits by adding them to existing actions. Booking appointments? Add exercise to your calendar as with any other priority. Filling your plate? Serve vegetables first. Grabbing keys to go out? Clip them to a packed gym bag so you’ll have it with you.

CHOOSE “GOOD” SUGAR. 6 Sugar from an orange is beneficial;

sugar from orange candy or soda, not so much. All sugar provides fuel for the body, but naturally occurring sugars such as those in fruits are metabolized in healthier ways than processed sugar. GO NUTS. Nuts are a great

beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas and parsnips are perfect for soups, stews and frittatas—dishes that are great places to hide a lot of vegetables or to try a vegetable for the first time. EAT THE RAINBOW. Every 9 color of fruit or vegetable has a

Pro Tips for Tax Planning Address these questions to keep your 2023 taxes accurate—and as low as possible. When the calendar turns to January, it’s time to start thinking about your taxes. Although not the most fun topic, with some planning and advice from a tax and accounting professional, the process can be streamlined and simple. Here is a quick checklist to keep in mind when thinking about your year-end tax preparation, with items to consider when preparing your personal return. Are you moving in or out of Texas? • If you are moving from or to a state that has income taxes (Texas does not), there may be a part-year tax return required. Are you buying or selling a house? • Plan for any potential capital gains from the sale of your house. (Even if you are eligible for the homeowner exclusion, there could be gains in excess of this.)

• If buying a property, make sure to save your closing documents in a safe place to substantiate your cost basis if/when you do sell.

Do you have stock options from your job? •D epending on the type of stocks granted, there may be alternative minimum tax to be planned for. Do you have consulting income? • I f you travel, keep accurate records of business expenses and the purposes of trips (including mileage if driving). •K eep on top of estimated income tax payments. If you have always been a W-2 employee, your income tax was withheld from your check, but when you consult, you need to make sure to set aside tax money, including federal income tax

plus Social Security and Medicare (15.3 percent). • Keep track of your expenses, and don’t forget that a portion of your phone/ internet could be deductible based on the type of work you’re doing. • Retirement accounts can be an effective way to reduce your tax burden while saving for the future (Solo 401(k), SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA). • If you consult from your residence, having a dedicated space in the home used only for business can potentially result in a beneficial tax deduction. • If you pay contractors over a certain threshold, you may need to file 1099s. • Consider forming an entity if you plan to continue to consult in the future for liability protection. A single member LLC will not complicate your tax situation.

Do you invest in real estate? • Keep proper records of rental income, repairs and other expenses. • Ensure your building and other improvements are being properly accounted for and depreciated to maximize your deductions. • If you paid contractors over a certain threshold, even for repairs, you may need to file 1099s. ‘Something Waits Beneath’

Scenes like this in Mueller Lake Park, along with words from a prominent American artist, prompted local poet Susan Martinello to pen these verses.

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show. — ANDREW WYETH

As a kid in red galoshes, I’d tromp about our snowy backyard, swipe with mittened hands at humps and bumps to uncover a watering can with ice inside or a ball my brother dropped at the sound of the dinner bell, my steps a chaotic dot-to-dot of blind wells filled with blue shadow. Massachusetts winters snuck up on us. Blizzards took our yard by surprise time and time again, while here in Texas the land lies lean in winter. At the feet of trees, not snow but fallen leaves blanket roots, the bones of earth. They hold the lake shore where I walk, cup duck-prints at the soft edge. Even the mud sparkles when ice paints the park, each twig and bush winking and laughing. But ice cracks, its dream drips away, back to cold mornings, faded grass. I used to sit in a leafless apple tree, a girl pretending to be Jo March in her cold garret. Now, feet on the ground, I ponder riddles inscribed by branches across the sky, puzzle the restless tingle of the earth beneath.
