orget January 1. Sure, that’s the start of a new calendar year, but as every former schoolchild knows, the real time of new beginnings comes in September. That’s when, re-energized by summer and its outdoor pleasures and slower pace, we turn a fresh and hopeful eye to the coming months with all their possibilities. Perhaps that’s why we chose this issue to debut our new name: NJ Home. Why the change, you ask? In a word, it’s about simplicity. Our old name conveyed different meanings—a long hallway, museum or showcase, for instance. With our new name, there’s no doubt what we’ve always strived to celebrate. In our short stint as Gallery, Garden State readers have come to love seeing their neighbors’ sky’s-the-limit inspiration turned into evocative rooms that reflect the homeowners’ personality. Whether they work with talented designers or go it alone (bless those intrepid
souls), our readers turn to us to help them imagine the possibilities. What about the possibilities of your own home? This could be your year, for example, to create something special, like Kristin Sinoway did in her Wyckoff home. Rather than endlessly hunt for a perfect place on the market, she and her husband teamed with Dan D’Agostino of Plan Architecture in Little Falls to reinvent a 1970s ranch. Working with what already existed, they converted an underused outdoor room into a new kitchen with a dramatic vaulted ceiling and large multi-paned windows overlooking the backyard. The results, as you’ll see in “Inside Out” beginning on page 86, are breathtaking. Then there’s a Haworth couple, who seemingly grew tired of their dark, earth-tone colonial. On the verge of leaving their beloved neighborhood, they sought the professional advice of Hillsdale-based designer Jennifer Pacca. Turn to “Love, Renewed” on page 92 to see how Pacca brightened and modernized the home, giving it a makeover that the homeowners once believed was impossible. And speaking of possibilities, our goal at NJ Home remains the same: to deliver design schemes that capture modern trends and readers’ individuality. The hope is that with our spunky and service-y approach, you’ll be inspired to set out on your own redesign quest. For example, if you’ve been toying with the idea of revamping a bathroom, our Concept Board on page 42 features items that might give your space the vibe you’ve been looking for. If you want to add a touch of flair or character to a room, the alluring hues of the pieces on page 30 or the shapely furniture on page 32 will surely do the trick. So, what do you think of this forward-looking, back-to-business time of year? September appears on the calendar regular as clockwork, but every year it unfolds a different story. We hope you’ll join all of us at NJ Home as we stay attuned to all the possibilities it offers.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.
THE COLORS OF WATER Watercolor has become one of the biggest home décor trends for 2019. The options for brightly hued rugs, wallpaper and tabletops with these designs are plentiful, and notable home brands have jumped on this ethereal trend: Safavieh has debuted an entire collection of watercolor carpets and rugs (above) in an array of colors, all inspired by mid-century artistry. Available at Safavieh. Le Creuset’s limited-edition ombre collection is almost too pretty to use; your favorite kitchen staples get an updated look in stunning shades cascading from light to dark. Available at Williams-Sonoma. John Strauss’ Salon collection, featuring cabinets and armoires with digitally printed watercolors, can be customized to different colors and sizes.
WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
If Mariela Schwarz Montiel has her way, it’ll be rhododendrons and magnolias. Colorful flowers and foliage complement the designer’s woven-look geometric forms in dinnerware by French porcelain maker Raynaud Limoges. Pieces in Trésor Fleuri are designed to work with the previous Trésor Collection and are dishwashersafe. But because they feature gold embellishments, keep them out of the microwave.
BUBBLE BATH
NJ HOME
Boca Do Lobo doesn’t believe bubbles should stay inside the tub. The designers defied the laws of physics with the invention of the Newton bathtub, crafted in black lacquer and brass that harkens back to Studio 54-era luxury. Matching side tables, a pedestal sink and wash bins are also available if you really want to have a ball. To order, visit bocadolobo.com.

FALL IS FAIR WEATHER Get a head start on holiday gift shopping—and support small businesses while you’re at it—by stopping by one (or more!) of these seasonal Jersey craft fairs: More than 140 exhibitors will display their fine art, photographs, jewelry, clothing and pieces made from glass, clay, wood and leather at the 35th Annual Fine Art & Crafts at Anderson Park in Upper Montclair, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16. The FREE event will feature demonstrations and specialty foods. More details at rosesquared.com. Five buildings are filled with more than 150 exhibiting artists from across the country for the 47th Annual Peters Valley Fine Craft Fair at the Sussex County Fair Grounds in Augusta. The juried show, Sept. 29–30, is the largest fundraiser for the Peters Valley School of Craft. A day pass is $10, a two-day pass $15; children under 12 FREE. For more info: petersvalley.org. South Jersey Fall Home Show at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees is the place to be if you’re doing work on your home, whether it’s a
minor renovation or a total gut job. The interactive Oct. 5–7 event will have home improvement professionals on hand. Admission: FREE, as is parking. Visit njhomeshow.com for hours of operation and more info. Morristown CraftMarket, now in its 42nd year, is one of the longest-running fine art exhibits in the country. Slated for Oct. 19–21 at the National Guard Armory in Morristown, the CraftMarket caters to affluent northern New Jersey buyers but features artists from 25 states. Admission: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors. Children are FREE. Learn more (and find out hours of operation, which vary by day) at morristowncraftmarket.org. Get a jump on your gift list at the Holiday Sugarloaf Craft Festival at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison. Check out thousands of beautiful pieces made by talented professional artists. There’s also a children’s theater group and gourmet foods. Tickets are $10 ($8 online) for the Nov. 9–11 event. There’s more info at sugarloaffest.com.
THE MAGIC OF 3D PRINTING
If you want a hand in the design of your next chair, bench, coffeetable and more, step into the world of DIY custom furniture making via 3D printers. This doesn’t mean printing the entire piece, but using the printer to make brackets, connectors, fasteners or joints that are then fitted with standard-dimension lumber of your choice to assemble the designer pieces. Consider Control DIY Furniture by Jack Holloway, which merges open-source digital design and DIY, providing (FREE) downloadable files of custom furniture joints for 3D printing (nylon plastic, acrylic-based polymer and metal are recommended choices). There’s also PlayWood, which offers a collection of colorful 3Dprinted connectors by Italian designer Stefano Guerrieri that may mean all you need is an Allen wrench at most to create your masterpiece.
Your “World’s Best Boss” mug is getting old, isn’t it? Ditch the generic kitchenware for handcrafted works of art from these New Jersey sources: Jono Pandolfi: This Union City-based artist has designed dinnerware collections (pictured) in collaboration with famous chefs, but even novices will appreciate his fine craftsmanship and timeless pieces. • 600 Palisade Ave., #105, Union City. 201.442.0172; jonopandolfi.com. John Reinking: The Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts alumnus has set up his ceramics studio in Pittstown, where he uses allnatural materials to create minimalistic mugs, bowls and more. • johnreinking.com. Source and Tradition: There’s no better place to spot unique, beach-feel finds than Alexandra Vaga’s studio/retail shop in Bay Head. The skilled artist—along with Shayne Boyle, her lead sculptor—creates each made-to-order piece using glass, metallics and white porcelain. • 524 Lake Ave., Bay Head, 732.841.1243; sourceandtradition.com.

WHERE HOME SALES ARE HEADED
Good news if you’re looking to buy a home in the Garden State—the ultracompetitive spring/summer homebuying stretch is officially over. Consider these October 2017 stats from the New Jersey Association of Realtors to see where the market might be going:
MUST-READS
“Fixer Upper’s” Joanna Gaines will help you spruce up your home. In the former HGTV star’s first interior design book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave (Harper Design, $24), Jo offers practical tips on how to find your unique sense of style and make a space reflect those who inhabit it. The best part? She uses real homes— including her own family’s Texas farmhouse—as examples and inspiration. If your vibe is more eclectic than rustic, let Suzanne Kasler: Sophisticated Simplicity (Rizzoli, $55) be your guide. The A-list designer, known for her sharp, timeless aesthetic, walks readers through the entire design process in her second tome, from fundamentals of furniture arrangement to perfecting those finishing touches. Finally, Wendy Goodman’s May I Come In?—Discovering the World in Other People’s Houses (Abrams, $65) lets readers peek inside 75 beautifully unique homes the author has been privy to during more than 30 years of designing.
COOK QUICK!
Is there a bigger waste of time when you’re hungry than waiting for the oven to heat? Not an issue with Brava’s new Pure Light Countertop Oven, which uses its Pure Light Cooking technology (with infrared lights) to reach the equivalent of 500 degrees in less than one second. Prepare a meal of medium rare steak with a sear, golden roasted potatoes and baby broccoli in under 20 minutes. Just enough time to set the table.

PAINT BY (HOME SALES) NUMBERS
Paint your front door black or charcoal gray and don’t paint your kitchen raspberry red if you’re looking to sell. Zillow’s 2018 Paint Color Analysis compared more than 135,000 photos of home listings to assess how different paint colors in and about a house affected the sale price. Houses with red raspberry kitchens sold for $2,310 less than expected, but a black or charcoal gray front door added $6,271—not a bad profit for a gallon of paint and a brush.
Rae Dunn, a designer known for her whimsical ceramics adorned with bold lettering, has debuted her exclusive collection at Kirkland’s home décor stores (kirklands. com). The line features inspiring words like “love,” “glow” and “grateful” strewn across mugs, storage containers, frames, pillows and more. We know what we’re grateful for: Items range in price from $5.99 to $39.99.

FOR BATHROOMS, BLACK IS BACK
Here’s a way to make a statement: Flush the white and try a black toilet. You won’t be alone, as black is now the third most popular color choice for Kohler customers behind the traditional white and biscuit. Luxe brand Toto has 15 models in black. For a real showstopper, consider the black Kohler Numi (pictured), a high-tech toilet that has a motion sensor for hands-free opening and closing, a heated seat and foot warmer, illuminated panels and built-in speakers that use Bluetooth technology, along with a charcoal filter intake system to deal with odors and a touchscreen remote. Beginning at $7,800.

Ramsey, NJ 07446 | 201.825.3832 | Dianedurocherinteriors.com I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN drawn to design. As a teenager I spent weekends browsing furniture showrooms and antique stores, and preferred House Beautiful magazine and Metropolitan Home to the typical teen magazines. A memorable Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt’s house cemented my love for interior design. From the matching tie-back pinched pleat panels to the antique chandelier, with the crackling fire in the fireplace and the impeccably set table, the perfect ambiance seemed to make the meal taste even more delicious. That was when I realized that a well designed home is not only a lovely backdrop, but that it can positively influence how our lives are lived and enjoyed. Graduating from Berkeley College with my degree in interior design was a life-long dream. In 1995, I founded Diane Durocher Interiors. Together with my team, we have had the privilege to design numerous awarding winning projects. I believe that our success comes from our dedication to our clients, the design process and consistently striving to recreate that feeling that I had so many years ago.

t was their first time really planning a house together,” says Monmouth Beach-based interior designer Sheila Rich of her clients, a couple of empty-nesters she helped to fashion a distinctive, 2,500-square-foot Monroe condominium in a 55+ “active adult” community. “This is where they’ll spend their senior years, so they knew they wanted a home that would be comfortable for them but laid out so they could entertain both small and large groups.” The condo uses a basic blueprint of some of the other models in the community—it’s a one-level home with a great room, a library, a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and 2½ bathrooms—but Rich enlarged some of the rooms to create additional space. And even though she used some of the standard building materials provided by Toll Brothers, Rich made significant changes wherever she and her clients deemed it appropriate. “The models were completely carpeted, but they didn’t like that,” says Rich. “So we began the design process by installing hardwood flooring throughout the house, and then I used a wide variety of area rugs, whose scale and proportion were informed by the room sizes, to delineate different spaces in each room. Since there were no walls in the great room, I had to use these rugs and the furniture as my dividers.”

Another challenge Rich faced was the home’s 10-foot-high ceilings. “I had to find ways of warming up the space without enclosing it, and it was a vital to create a sense of volume,” she adds. “That’s why I chose some of the furniture. For example, the large sectional sofa in the great room, by Bentley Churchill, is higher and deeper than many other sofas. Not only is it perfectly scaled to the space, effectively defining the room, but it also creates a much-needed, subtle separation between the great room and the kitchen. Plus, like everything else in the home, it needed to have a timeless contemporary motif with soft casual elegance and a subtle, edgy appeal.” Lighting helps fulfill a special need throughout the house, says Rich. “Everything is bottomheavy in a space like this, so you have to create volume, scale and proportion through unusual lighting, which includes the unique crystal chandelier with clear glass drops in the great room, the lamp with black string over a white linen drum with blown glass balls above and below it in the breakfast area, and even the extra-tall, custom-made lamps that sit on the end tables in the master bedroom.” For eating at home, the couple primarily sits around the extra-large, white marble-topped
This page and opposite: Rich is especially proud of many small touches in the kitchen, including the patterned backsplash featuring deeply beveled Carrera marble tile, the choice of a stainless steel refrigerator that allows the walkway to be less obstructed when its double doors are open, and the bold geometric rug that follows through on the basic color scheme.

island in a pair of counter chairs in the breakfast area that are covered in an easy-to-care-for black-and-white fabric (which is also used for the chairs around the round steel-and-wood breakfast table). Unsurprisingly, it is the most popular room in the house. Rich is equally pleased with the results she achieved in both the library, which one enters through double-glass black doors, and the enlarged master bedroom. “For the bedroom, I opted for romantic colors of soft ivory and beige, which I paired with shades of silver and gray,” she notes. Conversely, Rich made a bolder statement with the striking, textured wallcovering she chose for the guest bathroom. “I wanted something very fluid and dramatic, but not too strong,” she says. Perhaps the biggest reason Rich put so many special touches into her design was her clients’ desire to have their home look completely different from any of their neighbors’ places. “They didn’t know exactly how to get to that place,” she says. “Fortunately, I did.”

In the den, the color scheme is neutral—a welcome contrast to the mustard, khaki green, red and chocolate that once gave the room a heavy feel. Yet despite the light new palette, when one journeys across the den’s fretwork rug to plop into a faux-reptile-pillowed sectional before the charcoal-colored marble fireplace, there is no sense of dull. Ditto for the master-bedroom suite, which shed its black-and-beige hues, floral rug and dark-stained furniture, yet still finds drama in the starburst chandelier of raindrop crystals and wall art created from cocoa wood petals. “The idea is that you can be neutral [in hues] and still create interest,” says Palmadessa. And if you think you see a hint of gold and glitz throughout, your careful eye has picked up on the glam-organic influence. In the den, it’s

old colors are one way to wake up a sleepy home, but not the only way. A couple of snowbirds, who spend much of the year in Florida, wanted a makeover that would enliven their traditional, dark-hued, ranch-style home in Livingston. But the award-winning design by Danielle Palmadessa of Franklin Lakes-based DRP Interiors owes its drama not to brilliant shades of paint, but to carefully curated textures that go the extra mile for style. To switch it up, the homeowners wanted a light, bright, more transitional look with a bit more glamour; and Palmadessa turned it on with a style she calls “glam-organic.” “For some, organic design can be too rustic, too casual,” she explains. The solution: adding a touch of glitz with antique mirrors, gold-leaf cocktail tables and similarly stunning effects.

cabinetry was repainted a very pale gray, and the floor—once a Jerusalem gold—came to life with the look of travertine. (It’s really porcelain in a brick pattern.) One of the challenges facing Palmadessa was how to maximize existing space, since the den had lots of roles to play, including as a place for friends to get together for cards. “We went with acrylic,” she says of the mandatory card table. “To have anything solid would have made it seem cramped. That’s also the reason we used mirrors: They really open up the space.” Not only does this design give the snowbirds a golden vibe right here in Jersey, but her Midas touch helped win Palmadessa a Design Excellence Award from the American Society of Interior Designers.

In the bedroom, satin brass is sprinkled about from the lamps to the dresser hardware, and the chandelier is an antique bronze. Palmadessa dabbles in contrasts from a palette including taupe, charcoal and ivory to add just the right dose of oomph—such as the bedroom’s chevron chairs before a restyled fireplace, playing off the more subdued off-white-and-gray carpet. When it came to the master bath, the owners “didn’t want to change everything,” says Palmadessa, yet the room still got a pop because of an accent mosaic wall with a lot of metallic material. Connell took over the project from another designer, whose vision for the space hadn’t meshed with that of the club’s founders. She used an element that designer installed—wallpaper whose large whorls gave it the look of blue agate—as a jumping-off point. “I walked in and I loved the paper immediately—it was colorful, it was different,” says Connell. She picked up a dusty blue from the wallpaper and carried the hue throughout the other rooms—a continuity she likes to achieve in all her projects. It’s particularly on view in a room dedicated to friendly competition (fittingly known as the Game Room) in the polka-dot upholstery covering the chairs surrounding two card tables and a playful, game-themed fabric used on a
In the lounge, a previous designer had installed the eye-catching wallpaper by Robert Crowder, along with a gray velvet Chesterfield sofa, two small leather chairs and a pale blue Pottery Barn rug. When she took over the project, designer Jennifer Connell replaced the original coffee table, which was too high for the leather chairs, with one from another room in the mansion, and ordered a larger version of the same rug. She also added two custom built-in banquettes in gold velvet from Old World Weavers to increase seating options, and set a zebra print from Trowbridge on the mantel to echo the swirling pattern of the paper behind it.

But by 2003, when the sprawling, 491acre estate in Peapack-Gladstone, Far Hills and Bedminster was sold to Somerset County, it had lost a good deal of its luster. Enter local residents Bob and Kim Wojtowicz, who leased from the county 90 acres of the property (called Natirar, a reverse spelling of “Raritan”), and in 2009 opened a world-class restaurant, Ninety Acres, on the first floor of the former carriage house. Their vision for the mansion and its surroundings included a resort and spa, which haven’t opened yet, and a private club, which has. the 1961 film The Hustler. Connell commissioned the painting from her husband, Shane, a real estate developer who paints. In a wry twist, he splashed the canvas with lyrics from the song “Werewolves of London,” used in the pool-themed 1986 film The Color of Money. Even those too young to remember either film are apt to be engaged by the painting’s visual humor. There’s humor in the library as well, though it’s more subtly applied. Connell chose to lighten up a traditionally dark room by installing two sofas covered in pale gray leather and brightly upholstered chairs throughout. Colors from the chairs show up in an abundance of throw pillows that add to the room’s comfortable vibe. One of Connell’s challenges was filling the room’s nine large bookcases. She didn’t want to stock them with books alone—“that’s super-

pair of banquettes. On a large custom-colored sideboard, she dialed up the blue from dusty to intense. And in the bar room (known as the Tree Bar), she used it on a window surround and on the wallpaper, which also covers the ceiling. From the start, Connell’s aim was to create a design that was “interesting and kind of cool,” but subtly so. (“This isn’t New York City,” she says.) She didn’t want the rooms to look like ordinary living rooms, as many country clubs do. So the surface of the bar was constructed from a tree that once stood on the property and the metal brackets supporting the small glass shelves incorporate actual branches, also from the estate. Appropriately, the Game Room incorporates playful elements: a claw-footed pool table, splashy playing-card-themed upholstery on the banquettes and a painting of Jackie Gleason as a pool shark in

As much as she wanted club members to be amused, she also wanted them to feel comfortable. To that end she made sure that the elements of her design were as functional as they were beautiful. For the library, Connell drew inspiration from the lobbies of great hotels, which traditionally feature seating that facilitates conversation as well as quiet reflection. The two sofas, for example, are positioned so that one looks out on the room and the other faces the fireplace. And the ottomans scattered throughout can be used as foot rests or informal seating. “People like to pull up a stool and have a conversation,” says Connell. “They don’t want to have to drag a chair everywhere they go.” That’s one small but essential consideration in a design meant to encourage ease and enjoyment. The Princeton princes would have approved.
This page: In the aptly named Tree Bar, the designer charged artist David Horowitz with creating a bar top and base “tiles” made from trees that had fallen on the estate property. Subtly patterned wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries lines both walls and ceiling. To the bar’s left, an oldfashioned pegboard invites club members to create their own, often wry, messages. boring,” she says. So she spent four months shopping for visually arresting objects. “When you’re accessorizing bookshelves,” she adds, “you want the eye to flow and not to get stuck looking at one thing.” She scoured a combination of local stores such as GreatHouse Bonny Neiman in Summit and CSM Art & Frame in Chatham and accessory companies like Made Goods and Global Views, as well as antiques shops and New York City street vendors. Framed travel photographs flow pleasingly into decoupage plates from John Derian, an antique “POWER” label from a vintage car, crystals in varying sizes and shapes, and objects of pure whimsy like a bust of John Lennon, a Magic 8 Ball and an articulated hand. (“People interact with the hand,” Connell says. “You never know which finger is going to be pointed up.”)

Blurring the boundary between indoors and out, an imaginative renovation transforms a 1970s ranch home in Wyckoff. Design by Dan D’Agostino

An outdoor room was transformed into a spacious and airy kitchen with the addition of exterior walls, plumbing and dramatic touches—such as dark ceiling trusses and shelving to complement the predominantly white space. The countertops from Quartz Master were built up to a thickness of 2¼ inches to give them an extra-luxurious look; pale gray stools from Frontgate swivel to facilitate conversation.

ing and the white concrete pendant lamps to the bright-white cabinets and quartz countertops—are reflective, with the exception of dark wood beams and open shelving, which provide a striking contrast. That’s in keeping with Sinoway’s penchant for mixing light and dark, old and new, modern and rustic—evident in the priory-style dining table with its weathered gray finish that is surrounded by clear plastic chairs. While D’Agostino devised architectural solutions, Sinoway came up with all the furnishings and finishes, curating the kitchen with finds from Amazon, Etsy, local flea markets and traditional furniture outlets like RH (formerly Restoration Hardware). Pondering that eclecticism, she describes the room’s style as “industrial, coastal, modern, farmhouse.” The unseen genius of the kitchen, Sinoway notes, is its smart design. All of the lights, as well as the Sonos sound system, are operated by Amazon’s Alexa cloud-based voice service and Wink, an app that allows homeowners to coordinate all their electronics. “I don’t even know what my light switches connect to,” she says. “We just tell Alexa what to turn on or off, or how to set the mood.” To accommodate Sinoway’s large extended family—and to balance the height

erfection wasn’t on the market. After eight months of searching for a house in Bergen County, Kristin Sinoway and her husband Steve realized they were unlikely to find exactly what they wanted. So they switched gears, deciding that to get their ideal home, they’d have to create it themselves. They found the potential to do just that in a 1970s ranch on an expansive lot in Wyckoff, with an appealing great room and a cramped, outdated kitchen. It was their architect, Dan D’Agostino of Plan Architecture in Little Falls, who devised the perfect solution: Rather than renovate the kitchen, they’d turn that space into a mudroom/laundry room/work station combo. They’d situate the new kitchen in an existing outdoor room with a dramatically vaulted ceiling, retaining both the ceiling and the large multi-paned window that originally overlooked the backyard. Beyond the kitchen, they’d create the kind of lavishly appointed outdoor room that Kristin Sinoway remembered from her childhood in Florida. The outdoor room and kitchen, says D’Agostino, “naturally flow into each other, effectively blurring the line between indoors and outdoors.” Banks of large windows and two sets of French doors flood the room with light throughout the day, and virtually all the surfaces—from the pale wood floor-

Top, right: The space functions as a true room, with a full kitchen, a large flat-screen TV and a hearth. By next summer, the trellis will be covered in vines for a living “ceiling” over the wooden dining table from RH. The sofa, chairs and coffee table—handme-downs from Kristin Sinoway’s mother—were installed in the room for their exceptional comfort as much as their nostalgic aura. Porcelain flooring helps give the outdoor space an indoor feel, and heat lamps keep it habitable for at least nine months out of 12.

mounted above the fireplace—along with a series of heat lamps installed in the ceiling—allows him to watch the games outside from early spring through late autumn and beyond. The downside to all this comfort, Sinoway quips, “is that my husband never comes inside.” If the outdoor room reflects her love of hygge—the Danish word translates roughly as “cozy”—the mudroom is the embodiment of her affinity for organization. The room’s laundry section mixes open shelving with closed cabinetry for storing cleaning supplies, and a granite countertop offers ample folding space. Opposite the laundry area is a daily office system that includes a bulletin board, a chalkboard, a filing space and a charging station. And in the mudroom proper, next to a dedicated leash hook for the couple’s rescue dog, Taco, there’s a built-in home organization station with plenty of room for stashing shoes, outerwear and sporting gear. Luckily, it’s also spacious enough to accommodate a slew of outdoor toys, since Sinoway gave birth in August to the couple’s first child, a daughter named Evie. Whatever outdoor play spaces she inspires, they’re sure to be both highly organized and extremely cozy. And, no doubt, they’ll flow seamlessly from inside out.

of the ceiling—D’Agostino created an extended kitchen island with room for six stools. While the kitchen isn’t fully open to the great room—Sinoway says she wanted to maintain its “den-like feel”—a large entryway and the transom window above it encourage flow from one room into the other. The flow goes both ways. Large panorama doors showcase the back deck and can be opened and closed as desired. And a single windowed door opens onto the outdoor room—a space D’Agostino likens to a studio apartment, with multiple “living zones”: a living room space and an outdoor kitchen under a beamed, vaulted roof and a dining area beneath an open trellis. To add to the sense that you’re in a room rather than on a patio, D’Agostino built in an actual fireplace rather than the standard fire pit. “A fire pit is very informal, with almost a ‘camping out’ feeling,” he says, “whereas a fireplace is more refined.” Relaxing in front of the fire on a balmy night, you might just believe you were inside a house—if your house were equipped with gentle breezes and a symphony of crickets. The outdoor room reflects not just Kristin Sinoway’s Florida upbringing but also Steve’s passions for football and golf. The large flat-screen TV

And the biggest transformation was probably the basement, the focus of the redesign’s first phase. Once blah and devoted to storage, it’s now the entertainment hotspot of the home. “They do a lot of entertaining, so they’re sure to use the pool table, bar and family room nearby,” says designer Jennifer Pacca of the eponymous Hillsdale firm. No space was overlooked—even the space under the stairs became a clubhouse in the kids’ play area, where a pop of turquoise can’t help but brighten the day. “What we did was section off a gym area to help us stay in shape and create a living-room area and a play area for the kids,” says Rachel. “Previously we had their toys all over the house.” The family had a finished basement before, but it lacked the wow factor that Pacca introduced with a carefully curated mix of old and new—for example, clear acrylic barstools against a traditional wood-based bar for an eclectic vibe. Tired as they were of staring at the same dark earth tones day after day for 15 years, a Haworth couple with two school-age children searched the Internet in vain for a happy new home. Only new construction had the modern vibe they craved, and its price was outside their range. Then there was the tree-lined street they lived on—they had to admit they were still smitten with it. The answer for these homeowners turned out to be not a new house, but a new look. They wanted more cheerful surroundings, and that’s exactly what they got—without having their stationery reprinted or their china swathed in bubble wrap. Renovation made the most sense. “It feels like a brand-new home, and we don’t have to move,” exults homeowner Rachel, adding that she now doesn’t plan to call that van for a long, long time. Color schemes went from dark and dated to light and modern.

For the kitchen, the couple bade farewell to orange-tone maple cabinetry and brown granite and welcomed a white-on-white scheme with classic details such as shaker-style panels for the cabinet doors. A new island configuration “created a more user-friendly environment,” Pacca says, where guests can pull up a chair and watch the cook in action. Rachel loves the fine touches like the quartzite counters and Thassos backsplash and how the kitchen simply flows—something she especially appreciates at gatherings such as for Thanksgiving. as the staircase woodworking provided “a more polished, finished custom look,” the designer says. Explains Rachel: “The space before was finished, but bare.” Next, Pacca and the couple set their sights on the kitchen, living room and family room upstairs, where even the fireplace was entrenched in earth tones. Instead of the brown-stone fireplace that once darkened the family room, Pacca says, “we created a much sleeker look with white and a floating mantel.” Yes, color was a powerful tool in the living and family rooms, as gray and white with navy accents swept away the browns and maroons. “We lightened everything up,” says Rachel, taking special note of how contemporary gray breathed new life into a “tired” brown bookcase in the living room, where navy-and-gray pattern chair cushions provide a lively contrast. Since the colonial has a bit of a farmhouse style to it, Pacca softened the modern décor with touches of

At left: Cover hardwood floors with colorful area rugs and fill empty spaces with accessories to make your vacation house truly feel like home. Top: Thoreau was onto something—whether you’re a woodsman or not, a lakeside cabin hidden among the trees provides peace and tranquility. Bottom: You won’t be able to resist the urge to curl up on this leather armchair. Situated next to the fireplace, it’s the perfect place for some R&R.

Top: Ditch cold fluorescent lamps and track lighting. Decorative fixtures like this arts-and-crafts numberhanging from a dramatic vaulted ceiling set the proper mood. Bottom: The best seat in the house might be a large soaking tub set beside a row of windows overlooking the wilderness. Shimmering votives add to the ambience created by the natural light.

Fine wine is like a work of art. So why not make your collection a focal point? Design-savvy oenophiles will rejoice once they display their passion in a climate-controlled custom wine storage unit like this one made from stainless steel, glass and metal built by Mountainside-based Joseph & Curtis Custom Wine Cellars. The company creates storage of any size—for as many as 10,000 bottles and as few as 50. And space is never a concern: Designers can create a custom unit to fit just about anywhere: in a china cabinet or living room niche, under a staircase or over a doorway like the one shown at right. Any space—unused or under-used— can become home to your best vintages. Cheers!
