I most love the act of creation in what I do and the combined synergy of my work as a gallerist and advocate for my gallery artists; my museum travels and study of interior design all point to the same goal of growth in what I can do. I believe my efforts have long been to extol how the benefits of living with art is transcendent. This has become the flag that I carry with all of my work. It is our responsibility to support and nurture the arts and artists who explore feelings and subjects that

Visit the gallery and join me in conversations about art and the dialogue between art and design. Living with fine art can become part of our daily activism of supporting the arts by choosing works that engage intellectually and favor beauty. I invite you to be a part of it. it’s all in the details
As anyone who has embarked on a renovation, large or small, will tell you, the idiom “the devil is in the details” could not be more accurate. If you’re a trusting soul and have worked with a pro in the past, perhaps you’ll leave much of the decision-making to him or her. Still, there are several dozen decisions you’ll likely make, and the first one is the hardest: where to start. In the living room, for example, you might choose a sofa or pair of chairs or a love seat as the room’s anchor. But if you already possess a beloved carpet or piece of artwork, it could just as easily be that. Whatever you choose, the starting point is the piece that serves as the inspiration from which all subsequent decisions will flow. Design pros will tell you that the most successful rooms are those that balance proportion, scale and style (and no, I don’t mean necessarily “matching”). But, the most important tenet is that the room reflects your personality and fits your family’s lifestyle. It’s about creating a space that supports the life unfolding within it. Sure, you’ll need to consider fabrics and paint colors, lighting options and floor materials, plus how to showcase a cherished collection and what type of window treatments work best. Those choices pale in
comparison, however, with planning how you’ll actually live in the space. Take, for example, the Brant Beach couple who sought balance at their new home: They wanted all the elements of a traditional shore house yet also suitable as a primary residence. To do this, designers Donna and Victoria Grimes played up beach colors, added eye-catching architectural touches and, most important made the space practical for the entire family. Turn to “Almost Home” on page 78 to read (and see) the story. Then there is Caroline and Paul Schiavone. The couple had been living in London, where homes tend to be narrow and connected, but moved to Spring Lake with hopes of expanding their horizons and family. For their new house, Caroline, who’s Swedish, wanted to blend a traditional Scandinavian vibe with a modern, open floor plan that’s conducive to their entertaining lifestyle. In “Scandinavian Style” on page 48, see how they and designer Jennifer Pacca put everything together. Designer Kathryn Cook had a similar task at a Verona home, where the homeowner hoped to refresh the space while keeping a lot of the decadesold furniture. To do the job, Cook picked an existing feature in each room as a jumping-off points: the print on a favorite living room chair, the rich wood tones in the dining room, the books and mementos preserved in the library. By combining old elements with new designs, Cook gave the owner a fresh and refined home. See the results in “Color Me Bright” on page 92. Of course, there are plenty more stories and designs in the spring issue of NJ Home. And don’t forget to check out the products featured in departments like Material World and New and Noteworthy. These are the little pieces of home décor that can really make a space your own. Details. In the end, they really do matter.

THE LATEST REPORTS ON THE DESIGN OF HOMES AND THEIR INTERIORS AND FURNISHINGS.
A BLOSSOMING NEW TREND
A HELPING HAND
We’ve all been there. Working in the kitchen, hands a mess, trying to turn a faucet on—without dirtying the faucet. It’s times like these you think, “If only I had another set of hands!” Well, now the brains at Moen have a solution. Their new U by Moen Smart Faucet is voice-activated, allowing users to turn water on and off, adjust the temperature and get the exact amount needed for a recipe—all hands-free—by talking into a smart speaker. (It syncs with your smartphone, along with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.) U by Moen can also be customized with your own commands, whether you need to make a “baby bottle” at precisely 98 degrees or need “warm water” dispensed. No matter what your skills are in the kitchen, don’t you deserve this bit of extra help?
The olive branch is a symbol of peace, sure, but the olive tree is a symbol that… you’re keeping up with the latest home décor trends. Say so long to succulents and hello to olive trees, as the latter are among the newly popular ways to bring the outdoors in. Why? The muted, grayish-green leaves match any décor or style. They come in both full-size and dwarf varieties, so they can spruce up a tabletop, a counter, a side table or the good ol’ floor. Plus, they’re an easy way to add texture and visual interest to a bland corner or a plain white wall. Just be sure to place your tree where it will get natural sunlight daily, and water it regularly. Not a plant person? Opt for a faux olive tree that requires zero maintenance but still creates that same rustic effect of the Italian countryside.
THE PROOF IS IN THE POUF
NJHome
The best pieces of furniture are often those that have multiple uses—think of a side table that folds into a mini-desk or a bed with built-in storage. That’s why we love a good pouf, a home accessory that adds texture and a fun design element to a room but is more than just something pretty to look at. Need a little more room for serving? Plop a tray on top of your pouf or use it as a side table for drinks. Put your pouf under your tired feet and use it as a footrest while reading or watching TV. Or toss a comfy throw or pillow on top for some additional (and inviting) seating for guests. Best yet? Poufs generally have a small footprint, so they won’t overpower your décor or overcrowd a room. Poof! Just like magic, it’s a multi-tasker.

TANGLED UP IN BLUE
The color experts at Pantone have selected their official 2020 color of the year: Classic Blue. Taking inspiration from nature’s palette, this blue hue is often associated with the return of day. And although it has navy undertones, Classic Blue definitely carries more of a punch. It works wonderfully when paired with a crisp white, a sunny yellow or even cheery tangerine—the possibilities are endless. It also succeeds either as an anchoring foundation or as a pop against a neutral backdrop. Pillows, accessories and a painted piece are great ways to incorporate this bold blue into any interior if you’re not ready to paint an entire wall with it. Here are some products we love:
JAZZED UP
Who doesn’t love a good makeover? The legendary Rose Club at New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel has been temporarily revamped by Elle Décor and Universal Furniture. Created with the help of A-list designer Sasha Bikoff, the newly titled Elle Décor Café pays tribute to the nightclub’s music history—the balcony space has hosted Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Liza Minnelli—with sofas covered in burgundy velvet and patterned pastels from Bikoff’s new line with Vervain Fabrics. The pop-up café will be open until March 31, and reservations are not required.
Clockwise, from left: Classic Blue by Summer Lowe, available at saatchiart .com; lamp by Ceramica Del Ferlaro, available at artemest.com; Floral Dance throw pillow, available at spoonfl ower.com; velvet armchair, available at Pottery Barn, multiple locations; ceramic blue vase, available at jollychic.com.
A NEW SHOPPING CHOICE
Now New Jersey home shoppers have another retail reason to celebrate. Popular home décor retailer At Home is slated to open its fifth Garden State location, this time in Ocean Township. (The chain currently has stores in Wayne, Brick, Cherry Hill and Turnersville.) Known for its deep discounts on everything from sheets to lamps and from furniture to rugs, this decorator’s dream store has something for every room and everyone.

SCREEN GEMS
Crittall style isn’t new—it was back in the mid-19th century that British ironmonger Henry Crittall created these bold, grid-like windows with black steel frames. But we’re now at the turn of a new decade, and this architectural element is showing up in new, more innovative ways. In 2020, Crittall-styled windows and doors are being used as extensions to rooms or dividers to partition off either two separate rooms or a particular area within one—they even make for stunning shower screens. And no wonder they’re making a comeback: They allow natural light to flow into a space, and they meld seamlessly with the industrial trend that’s furnace-hot right now. These windows can be used outdoors too, whether to separate a patio or terrace from a dining room or to frame a backyard courtyard or garden.

MUST-READS
• If you’re a globetrotter who wants to figure out how to incorporate design elements from the different cultures you’ve experienced into your abode, Travel Home: Design With a Global Spirit (Abrams, $36) just may become your new favorite book. Through a combination of essays, anecdotes and exquisite photography, mother/daughter travel partners Caitlin Flemming and Julie Goebel show and tell readers how to authentically curate interiors that reflect the inhabitants’ travels and experiences. Each chapter is extra personal, featuring interviews with the homeowners across the globe who curate and dwell in these stunning spaces. • You’ll be green with envy over the homes featured in “plant stylist” Hilton Carter’s newest book, Wild Interiors: Beautiful Plants in Beautiful Spaces (CICO Books, $24.95). The visually stunning book shows through photos not only how to create instant impact with plants but also which species work in which rooms, how to arrange plants in hanging baskets or shelves and exactly how to maintain each one. Talk about bringing the outdoors in! • And now that spring has sprung, it’s time to start thinking about your outdoor space. Selina Lake can help via her new book, Shed Style: Decorating Cabins, Huts, Pods, Sheds and Other Garden Rooms (Ryland Peters & Small, $29.95). Turn your art studio, cabin or greenhouse into your own personal hideaway with Lake’s easy-to-follow tips on how to create, decorate, style and accessorize the outdoor oasis of your dreams.
SPICE THINGS UP
In case you haven’t noticed, homes have been looking a bit gray for the last few years. If you’re ready to step out of the abyss and inject some color into your space, may we suggest adding a sunny, warm shade of saffron? This spicy hue offers the perfect pop and works well incorporated with neutrals, whites and even this season’s other hot color, Classic Blue. Consider a statement piece, a pillow, even a lampshade or accessory. The good news is that a little goes a long way—just a touch instantly breathes new life into a room.

VINTAGE MIXING 101
We love a brand-new item as much as the next person, but these days it’s all about reducing consumption. And a piece that’s old to someone else is new to you. Not only do vintage pieces add character and interest to an interior, but you can also feel good about making a “green” selection. So what’s the best way to mix vintage pieces into your design? One place to start is with color. Pick a palette and try grouping new and old items together. For larger pieces, keep a space from taking on the feel of a mishmashed junk shop by remembering what your mother always told you: Less is more. One great statement piece has more impact than several just-okay ones. Imagine a modern space with a rough, aged mantle; a rustic table surrounded by sleek metal chairs; a sculptural light fixture in a farmhouse-style space—you get the idea. You may have to shop and shop to find just the perfect vintage treasure, but that’s part of the fun. Happy hunting!

the guide Yes, we admit it—there’s nothing like the publication you’re reading right now for lushly illustrated home-design ideas. But what if magazines hadn’t been invented yet and you had to rely on good old Instagram? Here are some of our favorite New Jerseybased design accounts to follow: • @houseofsixinteriors (left): Mom-of-four Tanya, her husband Carlos and their four kids live in a sprawling, craftsman-style Maplewood home, of which she shares photos with her 154K+ followers on the ’gram. From her daughter’s bohemian bedroom to
her freakishly well-organized open-shelves pantry, you’ll want to follow along and be privy to her bevy of unique design inspo and décor ideas you probably haven’t thought of on your own. • @bethdianasmith (middle): Beth Diana Smith is a Bergen County-based interior designer whose bold, eclectic style is manifested through bright textiles and vibrant pops of color. She blends functionality into most of her designs, whether she’s creating a sweet nursery for a baby or a practical kitchen for a bachelor for her 7,222 Insta followers.
• @curatedbymarina (right): “Elegant and timeless are the two rules we live by at Cheban Interiors,” Marina Cheban Brenner captioned an Instagram photo of a grayand-white kitchen she designed, ogled by her 10.3K followers. This Jersey City gal’s feed is a mix of snapshots of elegantly modern rooms she’s designed for clients and pics from her international travels with her handsome husband. Plus, Cheban’s own closet—both for how organized it is and for the designer duds inside—is serious #goals.
SAY “CHEESE”!
It’s 2020, and cheeseboard influencers are officially a thing. They’re social media users who accrue thousands of followers who “like” their photos of awe-worthy charcuterie boards. And the first step toward creating an Insta-worthy meat and cheese plate? Start with a good base. Topping it off with attractive cheese knives and accessories then only adds to the overall effect. Because let’s face it, no matter how good a brie or chèvre is, it’s even better with an artful presentation. Here are our picks for creating the most clickable cheeseboard:

The homeowners love the open-concept tri-hub created by the family room, kitchen and informal dining space. The designer made sure everything in these high-traffic areas is stylishly comfortable, functional and durable. The family room’s sink-into-bliss Vanguard sectional and recliner offer ample seating to chill and chat; an expandable dining table with extra chairs easily accommodates guests; and the Orient Express dining chairs, kitchen bar stools and two Bernhardt benches in the family room are all in faux leather to withstand wear while also serving as unifying design elements.

Caroline and Paul Schiavone—she’s Swedish and he’s American—met in Paris, where he was working at the time. They eventually married and moved to London, where they lived for eight years and had their three children. Life in the U.K. was good, but the family eventually found themselves wanting to expand their horizons. On summer vacations they often visited Spring Lake, N.J., where Paul had spent many happy times with friends. “We stayed at local hotels and fell more and more in love with the town, so just before our oldest child was to start first grade, we decided to leave London and move to Spring Lake,” says Caroline. “It’s a very safe place to live, and we now get to spend more time with Paul’s parents, who live only 20 minutes away.” Not surprisingly, the transatlantic move presented as many challenges as possibilities, making it key to find the perfect design fit. “It was very important for us to choose a designer who would understand and help us with our own vision,” says Caroline, explaining that instead of a typical lake home decor, they sought to create one that reflected a contemporary Scandinavian feel.
After seeing her work online, the homeowners entrusted Jennifer Pacca of Jennifer Pacca Interiors in Hillsdale with the extensive renovation and design project. “We found Jennifer before we even found the house,” Caroline explains. Since time was of the essence, the couple traveled to Spring Lake to house-hunt while simultaneously interviewing interior designers. They had narrowed it down to five designers, and after meeting with them all, the couple knew Pacca was the woman for the job. From there everything moved quickly. Shortly after hiring Pacca, they found a large contemporary colonial, bought it and began the mad rush to renovate and design all of the interiors. “They were moving from overseas and staying in temporary housing, so everything had to be done quickly to settle them in the U.S.,” says Pacca of the six-month process. When her clients were still living in the U.K., Pacca and her team communicated via emails, sending ideas back and forth. Whenever Caroline traveled to the States, Pacca met with her client in her New York City hotel room to match samples, visit stores and even drive to the house—

a 90-minute ride—to take measurements together. Everything was purchased new. Most of the furniture was custom, and all required handpicking of fabrics, colors and styles, then waiting for them to be made and delivered. “They were very open to our suggestions as long as they functioned for their busy family of five,” says Pacca. “With three active children, they needed ample storage and space to play.” Coming from London, where most homes tend to be narrow and connected to each other with almost no garden or backyard, the homeowners, who love to entertain, wanted to make the most of their 5,700-square-foot contemporary colonial home, which features five bedrooms, an attic and a basement with an additional 1,000 square feet. Pacca and her team opened up a wall between the family room and the existing master bedroom, and the master bedroom was converted into the new dining room. They also took space from the old first-floor master to create a laundry room—featuring dark cabinetry and distressed wood floors—awash with sleek modernity. All four-and-a-half bathrooms were renovated, the original wood floors refinished and the walls painted. To tie everything together, Pacca stayed true to the homeowners’ preferences for neutral colors and simple designs with clean lines. The living room is bright, breezy and beautiful, with large exposed windows, high ceilings and light gray, neutral colors. Pacca went for a less-ismore aesthetic; there are no pictures or paintings on the walls. Instead, she kept it to choice basics—some custom furniture, accent pillows and an oversized area rug—and the room is simply perfect. Creating visual interest, the white wool rug and dark stained wood flooring contrast, while the light armchairs and gray sofas offer a relaxed counterbalance. “There’s no TV; it’s purely a room to sit and enjoy one another’s company,” says Caroline, who adds that in addition to getting almost daily use by the immediate family, this favorite room hosts holiday festivities during which extended family from both sides gathers around 10-foot Christmas trees.
For their master bedroom, the homeowners wanted neutral, contemporary and simple. The designer delivered precisely that with light gray walls in Benjamin Moore Silver Chain, soothing blinds and window treatments from Hunter Douglas and modern lines of the chandelier, table lamp and floor lamp. In the same color story, the Bernhardt tufted headboard and upholstered king bed base are subtly offset by the York wallpaper accent wall. Worlds Away chairs and table in the cozy seating corner complete the look of streamlined serenity.

The family room thrives with the same spirit of livable charm. In a clear sight line of the kitchen and an informal eating area, it’s all about comfort and convenience, with features such as a kid-friendly suede sectional and recliner by Vanguard Furniture and a made-to-roll-around-in shag area rug, a custom design by G. Fried Carpet & Design. Sensible elegance is also apparent in the nearby dining area’s expandable table and additional chairs that easily accommodate extra guests; the Orient Express dining chairs, kitchen stools and Bernhardt benches in the family room are all in faux leather to stand up to wear in complementary style. When it came to the children’s bedrooms, Pacca’s strategy was adaptable durability. Her Pottery Barn furniture picks—attractive, affordable, well-built pieces with stylish stamina—can be updated easily with new age-appropriate accessories to keep pace with the kids’ evolving tastes. Accommodating the family’s changing lifestyle needs also influenced the renovation of the unfinished attic and basement, which were transformed into
a playroom and game room, respectively. Dark hardwood floors matching the rest of the house were added to both. The toy room, enlivened with fun rugs and colorful pictures, was Kid Central when they first moved in, before it ceded pride-of-play rights to the basement. The latter, equipped with video games, pool table and air hockey games, has since grown along with the three siblings to become the place where they and their friends hang out. “It’s now five years later, and we love the house more than ever,” Caroline says. “The furniture is still in top condition due to its high quality and durability. Yes, the floors are getting a bit scratched and we should probably freshen up the walls with a new coat of paint soon, but this isn’t just a house to us; it’s a true home, which we love and want to use. “We would love for this to be our forever home, but if we do move, we would like to more or less replicate the rooms,” says Caroline. “We love everything about this house. It all blends so beautifully, perfectly and tastefully.”

Problem: There were no urban-style industrial lofts hugging the ocean. Solution: Create one!
A palette of whites, soft grays and wood was used to give this Monmouth Beach home an airy, open feel. The ceilings were painted with a gloss finish to create a reflective nature in the space and provide the illusion of taller ceilings.

A Manhattan couple was looking for a beach house with a New York City vibe. Not an easy task on the Jersey Shore, where traditional homes and beach bungalows reign. When they couldn’t find one, they hired Summitbased Simonian Rosenbaum Architects to make their dream a reality. “They wanted a loft type of beach house, which didn’t exist,” says architect Matthew Rosenbaum. “We made it happen.” The couple purchased a dated 1980s house in Monmouth Beach, which was essentially deconstructed. “We really started from scratch,” Rosenbaum says. “It is a huge leap from what it started at.” To ensure that the project had a cohesive feel, Simonian Rosenbaum managed all the construction and handled every aspect of the design of the exterior and interior.
To begin, the exterior siding, which was originally a dated reddish-brown, was replaced with a modern, gray, vertically hung version. In the backyard, the home was transformed to take advantage of the large outdoor space. Highlights included creating a rooftop deck, adding a tranquil pool space and streamlining the entertaining areas. Throughout the property, the landscaping was elevated to fit the new look. The home’s interior was revamped by opening up small, dark rooms to create a large space with a loft-like feel. “We removed all the interior walls and installed structural wood columns wrapped in steel channels to provide an open floor plan and allow the space to flow among all the rooms,” explains Rosenbaum. The columns are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, giving definition

to each zone within the space while still allowing for an airy feel. A wall of windows was added to let in natural light and provide views of the backyard. One of the most stunning components of the space is the metal and timber staircase. A vital element in the design, it provides an architectural centerpiece. “Floating wood treads and open risers make it appear that the staircase floats within the loft-style space,” says Rosenbaum. “The cable railing is used to enhance the transparency of the staircase while allowing it to meet all necessary safety codes.” Enhancing it even further is the wood on the wall behind it, which matches the exterior siding to ensure cohesiveness between the inside and the outside.

Upstairs, the master bedroom— with its soaring ceilings and floorto-ceiling windows—is highlighted with contemporary lighting details and a monochromatic palette. A private sitting room is a quiet space to watch television and read. The master bath is connected to a dressing room with built-in concealed closets to retain a clean, modern feel. By taking a house in a great location and choosing the right team to guide the process, these homeowners made their beach dream home a reality. “It is the perfect retreat from their busy lives,” says Rosenbaum. When Jill and Chris Torrente decided to redo their backyard, they relied on their travels for design inspiration. “I pull a lot of ideas from the hotels we go to,” says Jill. “I’ve come to really appreciate their attention to detail. And I wanted every part of our backyard to be an area that I was excited to hang out in. That’s how you feel sometimes when you go to a hotel.” The Torrentes had lived in their colonial-style home in Woodcliff Lake for several years before embarking on a major renovation of the inside. When that was complete, it was time for the backyard of their dreams. “Before, the backyard was just a pool, a patio and a lot of grass,” recalls Torrente. “I don’t love big, wide open spaces. I like smaller areas with a lot of character that speak to the people who use them and say, ‘This is what you should do here.’” So they hired Mitch Knapp, owner of Scenic Landscaping, Tapestry Landscape Architecture and Tranquility Pools in Haskell to create a backyard sanctuary that would be multifunctional, adding
an outdoor kitchen, a stand-alone hot tub, a lounge area and a firepit to the existing pool and patio area, which needed an overhaul. “The backyard had no screening or privacy, just some old trees that were past their prime and diseased,” recalls Knapp. “We ended up building a boulder wall in the back, which enabled us to raise the grade and make the yard level.” Torrente had spent time in Cape Cod and Connecticut and liked “that new-old look that you see in New England,” she says, and Knapp understood the aesthetic she wanted to achieve. “We blended a naturalistic landscape into a modern design,” says Knapp. “It has a feeling like it’s been there a long time, and it fits.” Torrente picked a white-and-gray sandblasted marble for the new patio surrounding the pool, which gave the area a lighter and brighter look. Bluestone was used for the top of the new hot tub, which was built next to the pool for year-round use. “My husband does triathlons and Ironmans, and we thought

having access to that all year would be great,” Torrente says. “Plus, we wanted it to be as big as possible.” The family has three kids and lots of relatives on both sides, and they entertain frequently. To that end, Torrente also requested a lounge area, which features an outdoor TV and a coffee table with a fire component to add a little warmth and ambiance to the space. A separate firepit area is another of the homeowner’s favorite spots. “After a dinner party, it’s nice to go out there and sit around with a glass of wine,” she says. “It’s one of the little things that make life a little more fun and make you feel good.” The outdoor kitchen was designed to allow the chef to socialize while grilling. Orange barstools pull up to the other side of the counter so people can chat with the cook or grab a bite to eat. A minifridge and plenty of cabinetry make the space even more functional.
Pops of orange throughout the backyard contribute to the fun and festive vibe. “I like to add color because it gives the space a lot of character and warmth and sends a message that this is how you’re going to feel, whether it’s relaxed and calm or ‘Oh, this is so fun,’” explains Torrente. Orange and blue cushions from Potter y Barn top Adirondack chairs from Backyard Living in Ridgewood, where the family bought most of their outdoor furniture. The project was completed in record time so that the family could use the pool in summer, and the end result was just what Torrente hoped it would be. “I wanted the backyard to be very peaceful and relaxing and comfortable, but also extremely functional, with each space a place that people would really enjoy experiencing,” she says. “I knew that Mitch understood what we were going for, and I love how it turned out.”
The homeowners’ large extended family makes good use of the lounge area, the firepit and the oversized hot tub during frequent backyard parties. “It’s nice to have areas where people can congregate, relax and be together,” Torrente says.

bedroom, but I suggested we frame it, so it became a cornerstone of the color pop in the living room,” the designer says. “That piece inspired the color palette.” McCarthy also found a new life for a handmade ceramic-glazed bowl the duo had purchased in Maine, turning it into a glass-topped side table in the living room. The colors and patterns of the piece in turn inspired the custom carpet by L&M for Schwartz Design Showroom of Metuchen. Integrating items from all over the world was perhaps the biggest challenge for the gallery-curator-turned-designer but, with the help of her “right hand” Rachel Ruding of On Track & Organized in Neptune, she made it all look cohesive— although there’s actually more to do. “The couple just came back from South Africa and have fabulous pictures of African women that I’m going to blow up and assemble as a mural in the basement,” McCarthy says, noting that the house’s downstairs has a lighter color palette than the rooms in the main living area. “I’m still not finished!”

Above: The homeowners took a handful of sentimental items with them when downsizing from Marlboro to Moorestown, including this grand piano and the three Global Views statues of climbing men mounted on the wall next to it. Left: Interior designer Mary Catherine McCarthy retooled a few of the art-loving couple’s favorite items for their new home, such as this Japanese kimono and handmade ceramic bowl, which became key elements of the overall contemporary aesthetic.

It was time to start fresh. With their four adult children moved out of their house, some with spouses and kids of their own, Mary Catherine McCarthy’s clients were preparing to downsize. The requirements for their new home? It needed to be kid- and pet-friendly—and to pay homage to some of the art they’d collected on their travels. So the twosome hired the Sea Girt-based designer both to stage their traditional Marlboro home before selling it and to help them make an inventory of items they’d take with them to their four-bedroom, four-bathroom home within a 55-and-older community in Moorestown. “The owner said, ‘I did this life. I want a whole new life, and I have a few sentimental pieces I’d like to take with me,’” McCarthy recalls. Those pieces consisted mostly of unique artwork picked up on the homeowners’ travels. In fact, a gorgeous silk kimono from Japan helped to define the new abode’s overall aesthetic. “The kimono was on a dress form in the master

Thanks to a redesign that eliminated two walls, this Franklin Lakes kitchen has come out of hiding with a modern farmhouse motif. The enormous metal-strapped hood above a 60-inch Wolf stove is a feast for the eyes, but also not to be missed are the reclaimed barn beams on the shiplap ceiling and the sleek-yet-rustic combo of marble and graphite countertops with custom cabinets in oak and alder wood.

| NJHome 76
Marble may look highbrow, but a Franklin Lakes family’s new modern farmhouse kitchen proves it’s not too sleek to rub elbows with more rustic elements such as reclaimed wood beams (from actual barns) and wicker for a design that’s the envy of friends. “Today, different elements are being used together,” says Wyckoff master kitchen designer Peter Salerno. An example is the Calacatta Gold marble that adds elegance to the alder wood island in pewter—and yes, there are barn posts tying it all together. Honed graphite tops the perimeter counters for a similar play on contrasts with cloud white and stained oak cabinets, antiquelooking backsplash tiles and a hickory plank floor. More reclaimed beams give the shiplap ceiling its own special wow. “Being a designer, I like a lot of different things,” says homeowner Nancy, who shares this expanded ranch (and these days especially the kitchen) with her husband and three 20-something kids. Though Nancy styled the house after their 1999 move-in with a then trendy country French kitchen, she was ready to retire the maple and maize gold cabinets and cherry-based island
years ago. When her husband finally agreed, she sought out Salerno to bounce her many ideas off of. “Nancy was all about ‘Let’s push the envelope,’” says Salerno of their successful collaboration. They also needed Brett Prime, founder of Aspire Premium Builders in Hawthorne, to help conquer a major flaw: You could walk through the house and never see the kitchen. Today’s kitchen is hard to miss thanks to the architect-guided removal of a bearing wall. “We created a 45-degree angle just to give it a better flow,” says Salerno. Not only does the blacksmith-style hood over a 60-inch pro-grade Wolf stove command attention, but it’s also freestanding for “a wide-open feeling.” To further improve the flow, Salerno carved space from a large pantry for Nancy’s desk with a smaller pantry/closet behind it. This modern farmhouse look continues with a family-sized breakfast table with wicker chairs as well as an eclectic mix of lighting, including an upsidedown vase chandelier by Arteriors and metal-and-steel pendants by Caleo. Says Nancy: “I have the kitchen I’ve always wanted.”
This page, right: “We cook so much more now,” says the homeowner after a 2019 kitchen redesign not only improved the flow to make entertaining fun, but also added a Sub-Zero wine fridge and pro-grade appliances such as a Wolf steam oven. Opposite page: This center island was built to please, from the clever side shelves displaying a creative mix of décor to the modern-yet-comfy upholstered chairs from Restoration Hardware, the sleek Calacatta Gold top and, of course, the prep sink for cooking ease. A beach house can be a getaway, a sanctuary, a gathering place for friends and family. For a pair of empty nesters who built their dream beach house on a grassy Brant Beach dune, it would be all these things and, eventually, one more: their primary residence. Given that multiplicity of purposes, the home’s interior designers, Donna and Victoria Grimes—who worked with the owners from the planning stage onward—faced a special challenge: how to create a space that would say “escape” and “home” in the same breath. “Beach houses have to be practical,” says Donna Grimes, whose offices are in Ship’s Bottom on Long Beach Island. “But if it’s going to end up being your primary resi-

A soothing sand-and-blue palette predominates throughout the house, especially in the great room. The sectional sofa, slipcovered in a custom high-performance blue tweed from the designers’ own line, echoes the sky and sea just beyond the room’s large windows, and the circular planked coffee table from Classic Home looks as if it might have just washed ashore.

dence, a beach house also has to have all the great elements you’d want in a year-round home.” At the Brant Beach house, those elements include an entire floor dedicated to guests and visiting family, a spacious kitchen with a 14foot island, loads of custom-designed features and finishes that are as elegant as they are hard-wearing. They also include banks of windows designed to take in the spectacular dune and ocean views. In fact, the Grimes’ design was always animated by the need to allow those views to take center stage. The palette throughout is a soft blend of blue and sand—the designers’ goal was to make it feel “soothing”—but that doesn’t mean it’s bland or uninteresting. The large sectional sofa in the great room, for instance, may appear solid blue from a distance, but close up it reveals a subtle warp and weft of blues and whites. And while the kitchen is light and bright, the cabinets are actually a creamy beige, with a brushstroke finish that makes the beige feel fresh and contemporary. “That’s one of the things that I love about the house,”

says Grimes, “because right now every other construction we’re doing has a white kitchen with a white-and-gray quartz countertop.” In this kitchen, the countertops are indeed quartz, but they comprise a pin-dot mixture of gray, beige and white with a concrete-like finish. Eschewing the ubiquitous white subway-tile backsplash, the designers instead chose a frosted glass tile in a subtle green that calls to mind tumbled sea glass. The color, says Grimes, is picked up in the cushions of the metal and woven-wicker barstools. While the views out the windows provide an ever-changing backdrop, the design draws the eye inside with a series of arresting architectural and design features. The great room includes an inset bar area that was originally intended to be a large closet. “The owner asked if there would be space for a bar,” says Grimes, who looked at the house plans and immediately knew the designated closet space would be perfect for shelves and a counter. Another of the home’s most eyecatching architectural touches is the stair railing. Constructed of poplar NJHome

and painted white, it has the feel of a sophisticated ranch fence, and, says Grimes, it’s a favorite feature of the homeowners and their guests—though it almost didn’t happen. “Nobody wanted to build it,” she remembers, because it was so out of the ordinary. The designers, who were passionate about it, pressed on and finally found a willing craftsman. The house is filled with custom-designed elements, from the sleekly contemporary bar cabinetry to the knotty pine range hood that adds a warm note to the kitchen. It’s obvious that this house is one of a kind. What’s less than obvious is the house’s practical side. The owners have a pair of energetic dogs and two sons in their 20s who visit often. And as passionate cyclists, nature lovers and beachwalkers, they’re likely to drag in a fair amount of sand and dirt. Add water—from the nearby Atlantic and the backyard pool—and you have the potential for a permanent scrim of grit. To ensure everything about the house continues to shine in spite of hard use, the designers installed vinyl flooring The designers chose to go beyond the expected white-on-white kitchen: The cabinetry has a beige brushstroke finish, the Gray Lagoon quartz countertops are a blend of gray, beige and white, and the backsplash is a pale green frosted glass tile that evokes the outdoor seascape. Designer Donna Grimes chose a custom-made pine range hood to set off the predominant pastels.

throughout. “It’s a high-end vinyl,” says Grimes, “so it looks absolutely amazing.” When visitors learn what it’s constructed of, they’ll often bend over to run their hands over the floor to make sure it isn’t really wood. Some remain unconvinced. So what do you do when you can’t use wood planking on the floors? You put it on the ceiling—which is exactly what the designers did in the great room. Like wood flooring, it adds warmth to the room, which otherwise— with its white walls and large windows—might seem overly chilly. “With the high ceilings and all that white, and the sun and the reflection,” Grimes notes, “the wood ceiling warms up the room without being too warm.” At present, the peripatetic homeowners—who have an apartment in Philadelphia and another near New York City—consider the beach house more of a base of shifting operations than a home. But when they finally make the transition to living in the house full time, it will be more than ready to embrace them, thanks to a design that magically melds custom and comfort.

Mendham-based designer Jo Ann Alston brought the outdoors in with an almost-bespoke Badminton wallpaper by de Gournay that silhouettes this dining room’s niche and strategically ties into the owner’s existing oriental rug. “The birds and butterflies in the motif mimic the colors on the ground, and you have a more balanced wall that creates something very dramatic to look at,” explains Alston. A crystal chandelier by Niermann Weeks, Mottahedeh & Co. china and new metallic green upholstery on chairs the owner already had make the tablescape dainty to boot.

When a Central New Jersey family of five wanted to update their four-bedroom abode for the first time while indulging the lady of the home’s love for the English countryside, they knew designer Jo Ann Alston would rise to the challenge. “The client required a fresh take on that style’s charm and subtle sophistication without any of its stuffiness,” says Alston, owner of J. Stephens Interiors in Mendham. But how does one defy time and modernize a space to look older? For the living room, Alston went for a chic European country aesthetic with a pair of custom-sized gilded Friedman Brothers oval mirrors outlined in mahogany and a matching mahogany tea table by Kittinger with intricately carved corners and a raised edge for the homeowner’s morning spot of Earl Grey. Antique lamps by Carlos de la Puente in a glossy sage green topped with custom Blanche Field NYC lampshades (“They make the room,” boasts Alston) add color to the otherwise neutral space, mimicking the hue accentuated in the pleated chintz drapery. Alston also opted for a curvaceous, banquettestyle Edward Ferrell sofa that she says adds an ultra-feminine sil-
houette to contrast with the straight-leg chairs and side tables. “The different shapes give you a lot to look at when you peek into the bay window, as with a vignette,” Alston says. The designer also tackled the traditional breakfast room where Alston says she wanted to incorporate her client’s French-inspired aesthetic, which would meld well with the English updates made throughout the rest of the home—“The two European styles mix well and go hand in hand,” she explains. Fusing the family’s need for function with a desire for elegance, Alston alluded to the rest of the home’s design with aged-finish hunter green paint on the molding and window frames, Brunschwig & Fils patterned drapery, a straightleg farmhouse table by Woodland, Grange cane-back chairs and a dramatic iron chandelier by Formations USA. The homeowner has said “she truly cannot believe she lives here,” Alston reports. “There’s a belief in design that some rooms should be more formal for entertaining and others more relaxed for the casual everyday. In this house, they really have it all.”
This page, top right: No detail was left out in this English countryside-esque living room, including a blue-andgreen stripe along the crown molding that ties in the room’s tablecloth. This page, bottom right: The breakfast room offers a French influence, according to Alston, as she mixed Louis XV and Louis XVI-styled Grange seating for a juxtaposition of international chic. Opposite page: The storybook living room is appropriately adjacent to a stocked library that makes it easy for the lady of the house to select her favorite Jane Austen or Charlotte Brontë novel and enjoy a chapter with a view of her spacious property.

This Verona homeowner wanted the designer to make her house fresher, brighter—but not too different. Text by Darcey Gohring

This Verona living room was transformed with a mix of bright neutrals and pops of blue. Designer Kathryn Cook was able to reuse many of the homeowner’s best pieces in the new design.

It was a challenge not every pro could meet. Imagine a stoplight flashing both red and green. The homeowner wanted to freshen up the interior of her Verona home but keep a lot of her furniture. She craved the new—and also the familiar. It turned out that Kathryn Cook was just the designer to answer her ambivalent call. “She really liked the bones of what was there, but wanted to lighten up,” says Cook. So how do you incorporate beloved existing pieces but reimagine them for a design that looks updated? Cook’s solution was to brighten the color scheme, improve the flow and mix in thoughtfully selected new elements.
The result: a space that is modern, inviting and comfortable but still feels like home. At the beginning of the process, the client admits she felt overwhelmed. “While I knew I needed a new look, I assumed that would mean having to give away pieces that I really liked but that were dated,” she says. “I loved how Kathy created a new look for me but made some 20-year-old pieces of furniture look brand new.” A linen floral print on a pair of favorite chairs in the living room served as the jumping-off point for the design. The original wood trim and mantel were preserved, but for the walls Cook selected a light,
A favorite is the bergère chair, which the designer revamped by repainting the frame and recovering in a bold ribbed velvet fabric. To keep the room light, Cook selected glass tables for their airy and reflective qualities.

previously a deep red, she knew it could take a bold hue, and the new shade worked beautifully with the room’s wood tones. Replacing the matching 18th-century dining chairs with upholstered ones and adding a tonal rug brought it all together. For finishing touches, Cook worked around a blackand-gold bar piece the homeowner fell in love with on one of their shopping trips. The next room to get a facelift was the library. neutral color that would work well with the fabric and open up the space. She then added a coordinating rug to break up more of the wood. Window treatments were hung higher and off the wall to add dimension. “The room doesn’t get a ton of light throughout the day, so we enhanced the lighting and used glass pieces to get the reflection,” Cook explains. Once they had the right foundation, the layout was reconfigured to allow for a more comfortable and streamlined seating arrangement. In the dining room, Cook elected to use a rich blue color for the walls. Because the space was

and adding a floor-to-ceiling built-in, which she painted a glossy blue-gray. The plain walls were updated with boldly patterned wallpaper. Cook took a chair and ottoman that had been in the living room and reupholstered them in a velvet-trimmed textured tweed. The homeowners’ Canterbury desk and chair were the final touches. The last space to tackle was the garden room, which connects the backyard patio and a casual seating area for the family. “We wanted to link it to the outdoor space,” Cook explains. This was accomplished by making selections that enhanced what
was there and ensuring that any new additions were the right scale for the room. The brick walls and French doors give the space immediate character. A unique storage cabinet with textured grillwork was introduced for height and interest. Finally, Cook added a rug to play up the textures and make it a comfortable year-round retreat. “The new design makes every room a place you want to spend more time in,” the homeowner says. “The library and the garden room used to just be unused spaces off the living room. Now they are everyone’s favorite rooms.”
This page: The goal for the garden room was to connect the space more to the outdoors and add pieces that fit with the scale of the room. The inspiration for the palette and design was the spectacular large bay windows that overlooked the homes property. The organic palette of sand, fern, and brown is punctuated with peacock blue and compliments the beautiful exterior view with the changing of the season from summer to fall. Because these windows were so very impactful, the designer decided to continue the scenic view with a custom mural on the rooms’ only full wall and a contemporary autumn landscape oil painting above the fireplace. The result allowed visitors to feel wrapped in the organic serenity of the season. For more information please visit Dianedurocherinteriors.com or contact them directly at 201.825.3832.

This unique rain shower fountain has a “wow” factor that’ll blow guests out of the water. Even if you don’t have a pool in your backyard and/or live on the coast of the Jersey Shore, you can still turn your outdoor space into a waterful wonderland. A rain fountain is a good place to start; it helps set that calming, spa-like mood you’re aiming to achieve with your very own alfresco oasis. This custom, contemporary-style fountain spritzes water in a steady, curtain-like flow to mimic the effect of a rain shower. It requires less maintenance than a koi pond or fish tank since there are no live creatures to feed—and because it’s a closed system, recycled water continuously pumps through it. A fountain like this one is typically built with a copper base to give it an oxidized look that is protected from the elements, but it can be customized in bronze, stainless or corten steel too (and in various sizes, depending on your preference). Order this beauty online at a website like fountains.com to customize the rain shower to your specifications and tastes. Consider this the curtain call of your garden area: unique, calming and worthy of applause.
