As we’re reminded constantly here at NJ Home, the colors chosen for a space can be part of a coordinated visual scheme that is crafted thoughtfully with both the room’s purpose and the occupants’ personalities in mind. And while it would be a mistake to think only of color and ignore shape, material, texture, positioning and flow, color is a potent tool in the designer’s toolbox. It ought to be approached deftly, with a respect for its power and an understanding of its nuances. Color speaks, and even its whisper can be eloquent.

Livingston-based designer Michal Rubin understood that when she sought to create, in a new-construction Springfield home, a “farmhouse” feel with touches of elevated sophistication (page 66). For the walls of a dining room that features a blue china cabinet, she selected Sherwin-Williams’

THE ELOQUENCE OF COLOR

NY ACTOR WILL TELL YOU THAT AN EXAGGERATED DISPLAY OF EMOTION that’s perfect for the stage in a large theater would be “over the top” in a movie close-up. It’s like that with color in home design—a deep ruby red that’s wonderful on an accent piece can, on a room’s walls, become a little hard on the aesthetic eardrums. Indeed, calibrating the “volume” of a hue is one of a designer’s key strategic decisions. After all, a home is where you live—on all days, in all moods.

Just because you see your walls daily, of course, doesn’t mean they need to be humdrum. On page 46, you’ll read of a home in South Orange that designer Sarah Storms helped redeem from a bland existing design in which, as the homeowner put it with a bit of hyperbole, “everything was beige.” Here it was not just the selection of colors—a “bohemian” dark teal in the living room, for example—that came to the rescue, but also the way the colors were used. That teal shade was also applied to built-in bookshelves, the cabinets below them and a brick fireplace, creating a pleasing monochromatic effect and a cohesive feel.

You’ll find visual testaments to the power and richness of well-chosen colors on every page of this (or any) issue of NJ Home. In this one, you’ll find a couple of guidelines too. When should walls and moldings be the same hue, and when shouldn’t they? (Page 24.) And what’s the 60/30/10 rule? (Page 60.)

MEMO

Marketing, Digital & Operations

16 NJ Home

Sometimes it takes a practiced eye to fully appreciate what a hue can do. Designer Laurie DiGiacomo suggested Benjamin Moore’s “Van Deusen Blue” instead of the existing dark hardwood color for an office she was fashioning in a center-hall colonial in Upper Saddle River (page 40). The homeowners weren’t so sure—at first. Now they say the choice helps create “a gorgeous effect.”

“Let it Rain,” a grayish hue with just the right subtle bluish cast. Result? A rich impression that remains everyday-worthy, pleasing but not garish.

THE GUIDE

Sure, you love your new designer handbag. But what about your home?

And just like that—she’s a wallpaper designer too. Actress Sarah Jessica Parker spent much of the pandemic designing a line of wallpapers with her longtime pal, Wallshoppe interior designer Eric Hughes. And the resulting vibrant collection featuring floral patterns, bold plaids, cutesy ginghams and sophisticated stripes debuted this spring. The prints and colorways are very Carrie Bradshaw-esque— in fact, the oversized teal carnation wallpaper featured in Carrie’s apartment in And Just Like That (the Sex in the City revival) is one of the collection’s designs—and each will embolden your space, whether you cover all four walls or one accent wall. Shop the collection exclusively at wallshoppe.com—there are 15 prints in 193 variations, so you’re bound to find one that speaks to you.

OF LIFE

Mejuri prides itself on being a jewelry brand with pieces you can wear daily. Don’t you also need somewhere to store these special items? The Toronto-based brand collaborated with designer and vintage collector Maggie Holladay of Claude Home on a two-piece collection of “jewelry vessels,” understated storage vaults to house your jewels. Made of natural materials such as limestone and onyx, the pieces are as pretty as they are practical. The $198 Arch Vessel and the $128 Pebble Vessel are meant to fit together like a puzzle—they’re a simple way to showcase your jewelry. Shop the vessels at mejuri.com.

Looking out at an ocean or a river brings pleasure at home, and now a curated collection of images— Beautiful Houses by the Water: Living at Water’s Edge (The Images Publishing Group, $45)—proves the point beautifully. Time to give your home a new look? Read The Designer Within: A Professional Guide to a Well-Styled Home (Gibbs Smith, $45) by interior designer John McClain. The LA-based designer gives you a candid (and often humorous) look at his process, from conception to completion, and provides helpful hints along the way for redoing any room in the house.

• Plants and flowers. Plant tulips and hyacinths now because, even though you won’t enjoy them until spring, their bulbs require a period of cold to bloom. Deer-resistant daffodils are also good to get in the ground now. Perennials such as hostas and astilbe can be planted (or moved if you already have them), and it may be worth adding a layer of mulch on the soil to protect them during winter.

For instance, your local nursery will likely have good bargains, and the bulbs you plant now can grow strong roots until the ground freezes. So what to do now to prepare for a glorious spring? Consider:

Movies, theme parks, stores—now Disney is branching out into home décor. In response to the pandemic and work-from-home culture, the entertainment giant has debuted its inaugural furniture collection under the Disney Home umbrella, featuring rugs, wallpaper and accessories. It’s not in-your-face Mickey Mouse, but each piece pays a subtle nod to Walt’s entertainment world, whether it’s a mirror with mouse ears or a wooden spoon rest with an imprint of Winnie the Pooh. Each year’s circumstances are different, of course, but if you’re on the hunt for a home in the Garden State, it’s a good idea to check out what the market has been up to in a similar season in the past. Consider these October 2021 stats:

The number of single-family homes for sale, down 29.5 percent from October 2020.

GET YOUR GARDEN GOING—NOW

We spend most of our lives indoors, so why not have a space that exudes happiness? In his most recent book, Decorate Happy: Bold, Colorful Interiors (Rizzoli, $19.98), interior designer and “King of East Coast chic” Anthony Baratta takes you through a dozen of his recent projects. The rooms in his homes showcase bright colors, lively patterns and funky pop art, each meant to exude joy.

First-time home buyers accounted for 34 percent of the market last year; that suggests there were many first-time gardeners as well. For newbies not yet in the know and others who are still developing a green thumb, fall is an ideal time to get started on next year’s garden.

• Veggies and herbs. Why not expand your garden selection by planting greens like kale and collard greens this season? They’re hearty plants that can survive during winter (some might even give you a leaf or two during cold months). Garlic, too, is a winter survivor, so prep your garden with a few of these bulbs. Get onions and shallots in the ground before the first frost so the roots have plenty of time to grow— they should be ready to pull by summer.

Morven Museum & Garden: “Ma Bell: The Mother of Invention in New Jersey” opened this year, paying tribute to innovators from the Garden State. The exhibit is open through March 5, 2023, and includes historical artifacts from Bell Telephone Laboratories. Pieces are on loan from groups such as AT&T Archives and History Center, MIT Museum, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Historical Society of Princeton, Monmouth County Historical Association and Telesat Canada.

YOUR DESIGN DREAMS, REALIZED

Fabrics such as olefin and acrylic are resistant to chemicals, mildew and water, and they’re inherently easy to clean. In other words, don’t fret too much if your kids spill food and drink on a performance-fabric couch. And Crypton fabrics are resistant to stain and moisture—liquids simply bead on the surface—just like your favorite tech T-shirt or pants. They can be used for couches and sofas, pillows and throws, curtains and drapes. Though known for durable outdoor furniture, Sunbrella and its line of interior fabrics are a great option for sofas and drapes. And the best part is that the material can have the look of light linen, jewel tones or fun prints to fit any room and style.

LET YOUR COUCH PERFORM

Greenbaum Interiors, a custom interior design studio that’s been around since 1952, just named Diane Boyer director of design at its Morristown showroom. Verona-based Boyer has been in the biz for 35 years, winning national acclaim for her work in interior, residential, medical and commercial spaces. In her new role at Greenbaum, she’ll collaborate with its in-house team of 30 designers and custom furniture artisans to help clients create and design their dream spaces.

Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center: to South Jersey’s glassmaking heritage, the center’s Museum of American Glass features more than 20,000 curated glass pieces in an expansive, 18,000-squarefoot space. The facility also has a robust research library and archives, making it one of the country’s leading resources on the art and history of glassmaking.

Morris Museum: Visitors of all ages can experience the romance of railways at the Mega Model Train Gallery. This permanent exhibit features a 288-square-foot display with a replica landscape that includes city buildings, pastoral scenes, a waterfall and—of course— trains. New Jersey street artist Elan recently completed a must-see mural for the gallery.

Never been to Greenbaum Interiors? Know this: The brand plans an expansion in the residential and commercial realms and boasts the region’s largest selection of home furnishings and accessories. However, if you don’t find the exact piece you’re looking for, the team can get it or make it custom for you. In most cases, the design services are included in the price of the merchandise you purchase from the store, but consultation fees may be added depending on the scope of your project. (All fees are spelled out in a contract ahead of time so there won’t be any surprises.) Boyer will oversee the designs in the Morristown location, but there’s another store in Saddle Brook worth checking out too.

Montclair Art Museum: (Pictured) A new installation, “Visionary Landscapes,” featuring works of celebrated American landscape artist George Inness opens this fall and runs through spring 2024. Etsy, an online marketplace for selling handmade items from small, local businesses, is making some improvements for both buyers and sellers. The company has launched a Purchase Protection Program, allowing buyers to get a full refund if they’re not thrilled with their items. (For example, if an item isn’t how it was described, arrived damaged or didn’t arrive at all.) This makes it tricky for personalized items that can’t be returned, but the goal of this new program is to make shoppers feel more confident in their e-commerce purchases.

NO REGRETSY!

STATE OF THE ART— AND INDUSTRY

“This is great for the buyer, and so many other sites have protection plans too, such as PayPal and Facebook Marketplace,” says Seth Guttenplan of Fair Lawn. “It definitely makes me want to continue shopping on Etsy, knowing I can return items with no issues if need be.”

But not all Etsy shoppers are so sure. “I think this may hurt the sellers, as Etsy sellers are primarily small businesses and crafters who may not want to sell anymore, thinking buyers may abuse the policy,” says Diane Nachbaur from Woodcliff Lake. “It’s one thing to protect buyers against big retailers, but we don’t want to hurt the little guy.”

Our couches and chairs have been working overtime since WFH became the norm—don’t they deserve a break? Just as we’ve done with outdoor furniture and clothing, many indoor pieces are being updated from old-fashioned and vintage upholstery to performance fabrics. These have similar properties to the athleisurewear we discovered (and fell in love with) during the pandemic: They’re durable, comfortable and stylish.

Etsy would counter that sellers benefit too, as the company plans to invest $25 million in a program that will cover refunds on behalf of sellers for qualifying orders of up to $250, at no additional cost to them. So get shopping for (or selling) home goods, clothing, accessories and more at etsy.com!

Design professionals Rina Capodieci-Quinn, Elizabeth Crafton and Jodi Heimowitz hold forth on headboards, banquettes and when molding should—and shouldn’t—match walls.

SOME HOMES’ MOLDINGS ARE THE SAME COLOR AS THE WALLS, BUT MOST ARE NOT. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE ADVANTAGES OF BOTH?

Today there are some great options for retail furniture as opposed to a custom built-in piece. If you need storage, I would recommend Ballard Designs–Breton with Sunbrella high-performance cushions. This will give you ample storage as well as comfort. If storage is not a priority, I would recommend the Ross 60-inch slipcovered bench from Serena & Lily. It has a streamlined design and comes in 142 high-performance fabrics.

—Elizabeth Crafton, Allied ASID, Lilabeth Interiors; lilabethinteriors.com

—Rina Capodieci-Quinn, Allied ASID, RCQ Design; rcqdesign.com

There are times you may want your walls and molding to be the same color. A good room in which to do that would be a specialty room such as a TV/media room. There you can paint the ceiling that color too, helping the eyes focus more on TV viewing and creating a fun, unique space. Using the same base hue on all the surfaces in the room with different paint finishes can also make the surfaces appear slightly different.

ASK THE EXPERTS

I would not suggest one typical solid framed rectangular piece of art. If framed art is preferred it should be two smaller scaled pieces, square, if possible, hung centered on the bed.

In design it’s all about balance, not necessarily symmetry. If your headboard is tall enough, reaching two-thirds of the way up the wall, you really do not need art above it. Provided the window is of smaller scale than the headboard, adding a window treatment to the window will balance the weight. On the other hand, if your headboard is short, using a more organic piece of art, hung horizontally, would be one solution. Keep the art “see-through.”

Banquettes are great for maximizing space. They add color, texture and pattern. In some cases, they also add storage for rarely used kitchen items. I like to use a corner banquette to add more seating and utilize the often unused corner space in a breakfast area. Banquettes are also a good opportunity to soften a kitchen’s hard surfaces. The design possibilities are endless, since you can add pillows and coordinate dining chairs as well. If you have a small breakfast area, a banquette can be a great space saver. Unlike dining chairs, a banquette butts up right against the wall, creating more space.

When repainting, it’s very common to paint the molding a different color than the walls. Usually a color in the white family (or lighter than the walls) will give the room a clean, sleek look while bringing attention to the walls, creating a soft contrast. There are circumstances when you want to highlight special moldings, but as a general rule the molding should not be the highlight of the walls.

GREAT GREAT ROOM

Sophistication doesn’t have to be stuffy, as a grand space in an Upper Saddle River renovation proves.

NJ Home 41

To create an elegant lounge vibe in this Upper Saddle River center-hall colonial, designer Laurie DiGiacomo counted on shimmering fabrics, starburst patterns, a mix of silver and gold—and for the big ta-da, a chandelier with a vine of illuminated crystal flowers.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER FAMILY WITH THREE school-age children wanted the best of both worlds: all the glam and sophistication of a great room, but none of the fuss that stifles a lively gathering. When Laurie DiGiacomo of the eponymous Ridgewood design firm arrived on the scene in 2020, the room was empty except for a Schimmel piano. But that piano was a hint that the room would someday rock.

For drama, the designer let the double-height windows set the stage for a focal point that catches the eye from the foyer as well as the second floor. The contemporary chandelier by Hudson Valley with brass ring and crystal flower vine is not only lighting, but a “work of art,” she says.

42 NJ Home

“They had bought it [the colonial] from a builder, so the great room had very little detail,” DiGiacomo recalls. One thing the room did have was reddish-brown wood flooring, which, when combined with beige walls, clashed with the homeowners’ dream of “light and airy.” So, even before DiGiacomo’s arrival, the homeowners painted the room a pale gray.

The house was a five-bedroom, center-hall colonial built in 2017. Its owners were “two really busy professionals who just didn’t have time to really work on the home,” DiGiacomo explains. “They had worked with someone [a designer] before and didn’t feel like that person was getting what their needs and goals were.” Fortunately, the homeowner’s yoga instructor knew about design as well as fitness and recommended DiGiacomo. And the couple knew what they wanted: an entertainment mecca with class. (Also on the reno agenda: an empty living room that needed to become an office.)

This room can hold 15 people in lounge-like comfort, but who

Reflective fabrics extend elegance to the anchor of the room: a Stanton rug in blue with a silver thread flowing through its pattern. “At night, when the chandelier is on the rug, it really shimmers,” says DiGiacomo.

Opposite page: For the look of Calacatta marble on the fireplace, DiGiacomo introduced a porcelain slab trimmed in gold, keeping costs down. The artwork is no ordinary painting, but a Samsung Frame TV.

As hinted at by the mirrors flanking the Calacatta-like slab fireplace, DiGiacomo would also rely on starbursts for interest, which is reflected in the custom banquettes and the lined cottoncanvas draperies. Beaded gold trims the Fabricut panels, as the designer mixed gold and silver throughout the room. The Vanguard white-quartz cocktail table with a gold-painted base fits almost like a puzzle piece into the semi-circle sectional, above which an abstract delivers a pop of blue and brass.

sioned. Step one: Brighten it up by trading dark wood for Benjamin Moore’s Van Deusen Blue. Although at first hesitant, today the homeowner says, “The finished design alongside the light furniture creates a gorgeous effect.”

DiGiacomo was ready, too, to honor the family’s desire for an office rather than the formal living room the builder had envi-

Treating the chandelier like “jewelry,” DiGiacomo featured a brass geometric piece by Hudson Valley. For harmony, she introduced a gray desk with geometric brushed-nickel legs atop a Jaipur rug with a complementary pattern. Topped with gold-trimmed lamps, the credenza stands out for its painted, raffia-treated fabric. Leaving no shape isolated, tufted swivel chairs by Bernhardt evoke the arch of the built-ins. Another highlight, as “beautiful from the outside as from the inside:” the Fabricut sheers with a horizontal band “like the squiggles of a heart monitor,” says DiGiacomo. What difference did this reno make to the two spaces it tackled? “They were just plain rooms,” says the homeowner. “Now they’re showcase rooms.”

COLOR TRIUMPHS IN ORANGESOUTH

TEXT by LESLIE GARISTO PFAFF DESIGNED by SARAH STORMS PHOTOGRAPHY by RAQUEL LANGWORTHY

A striking redesign is elevated by a clever—and unconventional— use of paint and hue.

HE HOUSE IN SOUTH ORANGE, NEARLY 100 YEARS OLD, was replete with original architectural details and boasted beautiful hardwood flooring, also original and in surprisingly good condition. But the interior paint color used throughout the house wasn’t exactly resonating with its new owners. “Everything was beige,” says one of the homeowners, a lawyer and ceramicist who puts a premium on color. “The walls were beige; the trim was marshmallow.” Given that the couple would be spending a fair amount of time at home—they’d moved during the pandemic from Manhattan’s Upper West Side with their then 6-month-old daughter—they were particularly eager to banish the beige from the living room. So they brought in designer Sarah Storms to transform the room into what the homeowner describes as “something that felt bright and colorful and cozy, that worked well furniture-wise, color-wise,

The living room presented another problem, in the form of a baby grand piano the homeowner had inherited from her grandmother. She and her husband had never liked the piano’s red finish, which looked particularly out of place against the existing beige walls. So for the living room, Storms chose a dark teal paint, which not only complemented the piano but also ticked off “moody” on her to-do list. She accomplished “bright” by painting the trim, coffered ceiling and window shutters white, choosing a white sofa and a modern lighting fixture with large white globes. She also added pops of white in the form of throw pillows and a series of bright white vases on the built-in bookcases and on top of a whimsical metallic peacock cocktail table.

48 NJ Home

For the dining room walls, Storms chose Benjamin Moore’s Boothbay Gray, a medium gray with strong blue undertones that played well with the living room’s dark teal. Her inspiration for the color was another vintage piece, a dining set also inherited from the homeowner’s grand-

wallpaper-wise, and that was considerably more interesting than”—she searches for the rightWhenword—“beige.”Stormssawthe house, she realized the dining room needed a makeover as well. “It was very much in the former owners’ style,” she says—beige and bland. The design she and the homeowners devised for both rooms, on the other hand, would reflect what Storms calls “a grand bohemian concept that’s comfortable and refined but also artistic—something moody, yet bright.”

This page: White and light-colored elements, including a white sofa by Interior Define and a large drum table, both from West Elm, brighten a space that might otherwise come across as too dark. Pieces such as the aged brass and glass peacock table from Anthropologie and West Elm’s Sphere & Stem light fixture lighten the spirit of the room. Opposite: Because the homeowners’ vintage baby grand piano was a natural focal point in the living room, the designer added more subtle contemporary touches, like the Corso cocktail table from West Elm and the antique finish pharmacy floor lamp from Dawson.

mother—or more accurately, the modern blue patterned fabric on the recently upholstered dining chairs. That upholstery also inspired the room’s blue-and-white wallpaper and its eye-catching ikat-patterned rug. Darker notes were provided by the unique oxidized copper sideboard and the dark wood of the dining set.

But the genius of Storms’ color choices lies not so much in the colors themselves but in the way she used them. In the living room, for example, she opted to use the teal paint not just on the walls but also on a pair of built–in bookshelves, the cabinets below them, the brick fireplace surround and the wood mantel. That monochrome treatment helped emphasize the architectural details on the mantel while downplaying the paneling on the cabinets and the wall above the mantel. “The farmhouse style of the paneling and the more formal style of the coffered ceiling didn’t really go together,” Storms explains. “Painting everything in a single color made it feel more cohesive.”

This page: The oxidized copper on the contemporary sideboard from Anthropologie balances the dark wood of the dining set. Opposite: Before the redesign, the homeowner reupholstered her vintage dining chairs in a contemporary blue fabric, which the designer used as inspiration for the room’s color scheme: Boothbay Gray paint by Benjamin Moore, Serena & Lily Luna Stripe wallpaper and an ikat rug from Serena & Lily.

NJ Home 51

In the dining room, she installed a patterned wallpaper from the chair rail to the ceiling and painted the rest of the wall, including the chair rail itself, the same bluish gray. “Most people paint the trim, baseboards and crown molding white and treat what’s in between as separate,” she says. “But that can end up looking very stripey and unbalanced. When you paint from the chair rail to the baseboards and you treat that space in between as trim, it really takes on a stately, finished look.” But while it may be stately, it’s anything but traditional. And like the rest of the redesign, it’s a million miles from beige.

In a River Vale colonial, a designer created such a delightful TV room that she was called back two years later when it was time to tackle the living room.

TEXT by MARISA SANDORA CARR DESIGN by JENNIFER VREELAND PHOTOGRAPHY by KYLE CALDWELL

“I love mixing color and pattern and having it all work together,” says Jennifer Vreeland of JV Design. “The homeowners definitely wanted color, but they didn’t want it to be dark, so we used a soothing palette of cream with orange and blue accents.”

they were ready to update their formal living room.

Old, mismatched furniture and kids’ toys dominated that space, and “the room had become a catch-all,” recalls the homeowner. Vreeland created different seating areas in the large room, with the homeowner’s grandmother’s piano along one wall and a custom blue chair along the opposite. In the middle, an Ethan Allen couch anchors the room, along with two armchairs sporting an orange, geometric fabric and a blue bench, which ties in the blue from the TV room. “The blues and oranges are so refreshing and welcoming,” says the homeowner. “You just don’t see that all the time. Jennifer took the room from a dark, ugly space to this open, light room with beautiful fabrics and textures. She transformed it from the ugliest room of the house to our favorite.”

Y

OU KNOW IT’S A GOOD FIT WHEN EVEN THE DOG LOVES YOUR designer. That’s what a River Vale homeowner thought when he embarked on a second project with Jennifer Vreeland of JV Design. “She gets to know you, your family and your style, your likes and dislikes, and it makes everything so easy,” he says.

The family was introduced to Vreeland back in 2018 by their builder, Bill Keller of Cedar Cliff Construction in Harrington Park, who was hired to build a kitchen addition and open up the first floor of their center-hall colonial in River Vale. At that time, Vreeland designed a serene TV room off the kitchen, which quickly became the go-to spot for the couple’s two girls, now 10 and 7. Previously the room sported a large, red-brick fireplace, so Vreeland’s first order of business was to update it with black granite and a custom TV surround, resulting in a more modern, clean feel. She created another focal point in the room with a gallery wall featuring framed family photos. The family was thrilled with the end result, so they called Vreeland again two years later when

THE NEXT CHAPTER

A pair of empty nesters redid their West Orange townhouse to fit their free new lifestyle. But family wasn’t forgotten.

NJ Home 57

To achieve the desired ambience, designer Blanche Garcia went wall-to-wall with the mirrored custom bar, which is always ready for company, as is the expandable table, another custom feature. Visual energy flows from the persimmon-hued sofa paired with an Art Deco sculptural floor lamp.

Family may also have been at the heart of Ronna’s wish for a prep sink for her baking—after all, who eats all those treats? It was certainly a force in what Joel calls the “big test:” a bridal brunch for the wedding of the couple’s youngest daughter, with roughly 100 guests in the new space. The March 2022 event aced it, after Garcia re-sourced some of the furniture due to COVID delays.

TRANSFORMING

COVID wasn’t the only challenge facing the project. The elongated galley kitchen required a masterful approach to reflect an open feel and satisfy a lengthy wish list. A double-tiered island ticked two boxes: seating for six grandkids—all at table height— and an elevated prep area for the baker in the house.

With designer Blanche Garcia of the eponymous Montclair firm on board to swap the dining room for a lounge and elevate the kitchen from builder’s basic, she “changed our whole lifestyle,” says Joel. For instance, he dreamed of serving flapjacks to his six grandkids on Sunday mornings. At the new, 18-foot island with black leather chairs for six, it’s a snap with the griddle feature of the Wolf stove, one of several stainless-steel appliances.

A WEST ORANGE TOWNHOUSE WITH A swanky lounge and a chic, modern kitchen was a treat for two empty nesters—but it was more as well. In 2020, the timing was right, as homeowner Joel Sherman put it, “to do something for ourselves,” yet he and his wife, Dr. Ronna Sherman, had raised five children. It was inevitable that family would factor into this remodel as much as aesthetics.

But the major wow is the sculptural Unity chandelier by ET2. “That’s like the signature at the end of a story,” Garcia says.

Another big lifestyle change in Garcia’s design was her creation of a lounge as a “moody, sexy space,” she says, with a mirrored wall-to-wall bar by Cabinets Direct USA.

The couple had lived in the three-bedroom townhouse for four years before deciding to redesign the dining room. It was Garcia who drew them outside their comfort zone to “go big” with the bar, which anchors the room with a sink, two wine fridges by XO and a dishwasher by Fisher & Paykel. The other star in the room is the custom gold-and-wood table by Old Biscayne, a round table that opens to an oval for company.

58 NJ Home

“People walk in and their jaws drop because the space is so sleek and fun,” says Joel. “It’s a wow feel. I walk into the house, and I feel that way too.”

This page: For maximum effect, designer Garcia ran the Statuario Nuvo quartz by Caesarstone all the way up the wall behind the Wolf stove. The high-glass champagne cabinets effortlessly reflect light. Opposite page: A two-tier island not only says contemporary with its marriage of black and creamy quartz; it’s also key to seating six grandkids with ease and providing an elevated prep area for the baker in the house.

textures add warmth to a living room, which otherwise can feel stark. A sparkly chandelier, a wicker storage basket, a wool rug or velvet throw pillows, Bouffard suggests, are easy additions to make your space more inviting.

Now is the time to get rid of your clunky, traditional couch and chairs with curved arms and sofa skirts. These days, we’re seeing clean lines, couches with squaredoff track arms and chairs with sleek metal or wooden legs. Up the glam factor by

Quick Tips

Before beginning a kitchen redesign, you need to figure out what’s on your wish list, because there’s an unlimited number of features you can put in your kitchen. Do you want a large island to prep and serve, a double oven for entertaining or a beverage fridge, to name just three? From there, figure out how you’ll make it your own, which is what will give it that “wow” factor, says Darlene Terrill of Sherry Frederick Interior Design in Point Pleasant. “The focal point of your kitchen can be something as simple as gorgeous large slabs on an island,” says Terrill, “with a beautiful backsplash and large overhead pendant.”

Quick Tips

If you’re overwhelmed by the process of choosing a palette, keep in mind that kitchens should have light, dark and medium tones, which create depth. Terrill and her colleagues recommend considering light cabinets, dark flooring and a medium paint color such as blue. Alternatively, the backsplash can be your “medium;” tile is a fun way to bring in subtle splashes of color to the countertops.

Quick Tips

Here’s where you’ll likely do lots of entertaining, spending hours with your guests over food and drink, so this space should have some spice. Personalize your dining room according to your individual interests. Bring in an antique vase that was once used on a boat if you’re an avid fisherman or fisherwoman, for example, or display your teacup collection here. Says Tamayo: “I love for everything to look collected and for a guest to say, ‘Oh, where’d you get that?’”

Bathroom on the small side? Maximize space with built-in shelving in the tub or with a recessed vanity. Also, consider a pocket door, says Enger. “This adds more space to the bathroom [because it slides open], and it’s a good way to create wall space for light switches, hooks and towel bars.”

This page: “When I presented the bar stools to my client, she exclaimed, ‘These are the kitchen!’” Rubin says.

For the dining room walls, Rubin opted for Sherwin-Williams’ Let It Rain. The blue china cabinet is both traditionally old-fashioned and uniquely fresh. “The French blue color is drool-worthy,” Rubin says. “If you look closely, there are teeny blue flecks on the cabinet glass, giving it that unfinished detail I find so desirable.”

On either side of the cabinet, Christopher Knight Home blueand-white plaid chairs with pinewood frames anchor the room. Rubin loves the curvy legs of the Kelly Clarkson Home console table. “This is another example

“The combination of raw wood with soft velvet is so dreamy,” says the designer (pictured).

HE OWNERS OF A NEWconstruction home in Springfield dreamed of a farm style specific to their aesthetics and personalities. Designer Michal Rubin, of Livingston-based MR Interiors, realized their vision with a fresh modern twist.

The custom build—featuring six bedrooms, a home office, a music room and five bathrooms—had amazing bare bones and plenty of space for the family of five. “When I initially walked through it, I envisioned certain colors, textures and design elements,” says Rubin. “I always say things ‘speak’ to me, and the house definitely did, even when empty.” A mutual friend recommended her to the homeowners to work on the main floor, the kids’ rooms and the home office.

“We wanted the first floor to have a farm-style feel without being too obvious or ‘basic,’” Rubin recalls. To unify the open-concept space, she predominantly used Sherwin-Williams’ Alabaster on the walls; for the hardwoods, she employed two coats of Bona NordicSeal, giving the flooring throughout a clean simplicity.

“The ivory cushions, the X detail on the back of the whitewashed wood and the black circle detail on the legs made these the only option for this perfectly glam farm-style kitchen.” Opposite page: Wanting a yin-yang feel, the decorator paired a rustic pinewood dining table made in Vietnam with elegant Modway blue velvet chairs.

Custom cabinetry—built-ins on either side of the fireplace, a pinewood mantel and a beautiful wooden arch in an unfinished pine— also contributed to the desired aesthetics and organic flow.

“Michal used mostly new pieces but was able to incorporate some older furniture we wanted to bring along,” says the homeowner. “Our friends have commented on how seamlessly the design flows in each room, creating no distinction between our older pieces and new ones.”

of how we used a farmhouse staple piece—but one that had additional special detailing, like the wave in the legs—to elevate the entire look,” she says.

For the kitchen, the homeowners wanted something clean but slightly statement-making. Rubin’s choice of Tribeca Gypsum Tile offers a just-right amount of sheen to pick up every color in and around the kitchen. The black faucets, paired with the brass hardware and Etta Avenue lights, create a perfect mix of farmhouse and“Therecontemporary.areelements that are understated, while others are warm and welcoming,” says the homeowner. “The house feels like it can be a showpiece, but each space feels warm and livable.”

To Rubin, the home “now looks like it’s nestled in the countryside somewhere, when in reality it’s on a populated New Jersey street.” This project, she explains, was an effort to combine two ideals that don’t always coexist: “choosing design elements that would stand the test of time and giving the homeowners something that was unique to them.”

In the living room Rubin drew in more of the dining room’s “French blue” color. Inviting and cozy, the Castlery Jonathan chaise sectional is boxy, low-silhouetted and in a soothing shade. For color punches, she chose yellow striped and bright floral pillows to play up the room’s laid-back, contemporary vibe.

THE DESIGN ANALYSIS: We called upon Lucy Pavlik, designer and owner of Divine Home Interiors in Randolph, to assess the space and present a vision that would check all the boxes. Her goal was to

update the basement into a beautiful and multiuse, family-room-like space for both adults and kids. She chose a soft color palette of blue and gray—“desirable for small spaces,” she says—along with durable, stain-resistant fabrics to withstand little ones and pets. A few deliberately selected items pull double duty; for instance, the cushioned ottoman serves as additional seating, the lacquered desk works for homework or work-from-home and the console table has a trio of nesting tables that come in handy when it’s time to entertain guests.

SMALL SPACE, BIG STYLE

DESIGN CHALLENGE

A Morris County designer revamps a long, narrow basement into a multi-functional hangout the whole family can enjoy.

DESIGN by LUCY PAVLIK

THE SPACE: This homeowner had a half-finished basement, which she wanted to transform into a visually pleasing yet functional hangout spot for the family to watch TV and for the kids to host playdates. The kicker? It was an oddly-shaped, long and narrow room with a utility closet smack in the middle.

Gray and smoke blue sheer color-block drapes, by Central Park; Corina mirror, by Living Spaces.

Another essential element to this design is the fridge and cabinets, because what’s a chill space without easy access to snacks and refreshments?

To make the room look bigger, Pavlik recommends a large wall of mirrors. Metallic finishes as seen in the lamps and the mirror match the gray color scheme, but also add some texture and shine. “The fabrics, materials and products selected will turn this long and narrow basement into a comfortable, space-efficient and beautiful family room,” Pavlik explains.

You may not know yet if you’d prefer wood, gas or electric, the last of which gives off the look and feel of real fire with the flip of a switch. But you should go in openminded; all three are options for double-sided fireplaces and none require a chimney or any ventilation whatsoever due to their high-tech, innovative design. Holy smokes!

ignite conversation in a family room, get sparks flying in a primary bedroom suite or warm up your indoor/outdoor area should you choose to have it installed on an exterior wall. A transparent fireplace can be built-in or freestanding, and can also work for an open-concept living space, serving as an anchor to separate the various rooms in a noticeably attractive way.

SEE-THROUGH

Once you’re ready to commit, it’s best to hire a plumber to see if you’ll have to run a new gas line (if you go the propane route), and how much it’ll cost you. Then, reach out to a fireplace pro such as the folks at Central Jersey Fireplace in Robbinsville, who can help you design a custom see-through fireplace to fit your aesthetic, your space, your budget—and the chilly autumn evenings.

DOUBLE-DUTY FIREPLACES

Today’s popular see-through installations provide warmth—and visual appeal— to two rooms with just one fire.

FIREPLACES ARE HOT. THIS FIREPLACE trend, seen more and more in modern homes, makes both the warming and the visual glow of a fireplace bidirectional, so that it can make two rooms cozy at once. The glass visually connects the two spaces and adds an element of mystery too, piquing interest on both sides of the lapping flame—or its visual equivalent.

And instead of a piece of furniture or—gasp!—a TV, a see-through fireplace is its own focal point in a home. It’ll
