May’s Warm Welcome

Yippee, it’s May! This month, we celebrate our first year of publication, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, the official launch into summer and all things outdoors!

It’s perfect timing for a sweet treat for Mom. Read more about our local bakery, Francesca’s. Whether you stop in for coffee on the go or for any of the shop’s fresh baked goods, there’s something for everyone.

Meg Johnstone exemplifies doing what she loves. “A Labor of Love” tells her story, including her running our local breastfeeding group. Helping new moms start their journey into motherhood with love and support is what she does best.

Who better to celebrate and honor for Mother’s Day than our very own mother of nine, Erin Anello? I hope you enjoy reading this beautiful story and learning more about this precious family, along with hearing her views on family and motherhood. I feel blessed to have met this amazing woman and love her genuine spirit of giving.

We honor and celebrate the life of our late historian, W. Jay Wanczyk. Jay quickly became a friend as a huge fan of the magazine as well as a contributor, with his wealth of historical information about everything Pequannock. He is already missed. May our faithful servant rest in peace.

As the weather warms, be sure to check out the rail trail and say hello—if you can catch her—to Joyce Rauch. Read on to learn more about her incredible 80th birthday on the move!

Lastly, check out our local outdoor dining guide for you and your family to enjoy. Why not soak up the sunshine and grab a bite at one of these local spots? Maybe I will see you there—dining al fresco is one of my favorite things to do this time of year!

Feeling incredibly blessed, I can hardly believe this marks one year in publication. I appreciate your participation and excitement as each edition hits mailboxes. We have only just begun. Reach out to share your story, photos and business as we journey into our second year of celebrating and sharing our amazing, small-town community at hello@pequannockmagazine.com.

Why

Their Daily Bread

the owners of Francesca’s Bakery love what they do—and why customers do, too

INTERVIEW WITH FEDERICO AND PAULA COTIC

Federico and Paula Cotic are the owners of Francesca’s Bakery in Pequannock. We sat down with them to learn why they love what they do.

Angela Teta Kohle, retired after 35 years of teaching, lives in Pequannock. She enjoys volunteering at her church, traveling, reading, baking, walking and working for the family business.

Why did you want to get into the bakery business?

Federico: Growing up in an Italian family, food was at the forefront of our lives. I started working at a bakery in my 20s and discovered my love for creating pastries from scratch. I attended the French Culinary Institute in New York City to learn as much as possible about the business.

Paula: I have a passion for coffee and studied to become a professional barista and a professional cake decorator. Offering high-quality coffees is a perfect match for the bakery. Our coffee is a special blend, which makes it—especially our espresso and cappuccino—very popular.

Federico: I attended the Culinary Institute because I was fascinated by the science and craft of making artisan breads. The ingredients and techniques used are very unique. We offer a wide variety of delicious artisan breads, baked fresh daily.

What are some items you especially love to bake? And what are some customer favorites?

Federico: I love the work involved in any laminated dough that we make from scratch with real butter, like croissants, danishes and apple turnovers.

Paula: Our customers love our croissants, cookies and empanadas.

What else do you find special about owning a bakery?

Federico: It’s like being a family where we all do our part and contribute. Connecting with people is a great aspect of it as well.

The best part is creating delicious, handmade baked goods from scratch, sourcing local ingredients that we purchase at the farmers’ markets we attend and from local farms. As a result, our baked goods are much fresher, tastier and nutritious than they would be otherwise.

Paula: The community of Pequannock has always shown us tremendous support, especially during COVID times, which we deeply value and appreciate. Our bakery is a place where people can come to enjoy delicious baked goods, relax, socialize and feel at home.

Meg Johnstone holds 4-monthold Maya McAteer during a Breastfeeding Moms Support Group meeting at Atlantic Health System’s Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains.

A Labor of Love

Nurse Meg Johnstone finds a special calling in supporting mothers of newborns and infants.

In those first days of motherhood, moms often rely on a support system to navigate the exciting and uncertain journey they’ve just begun. Nurses in the maternity unit often play a crucial part in this process, leaving a lasting impression in the hearts and minds of family members they encounter.

If you delivered at Atlantic Health System’s Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, you may have met one of those special nurses, Meg Johnstone.

Helping new mothers since the 1980s, Johnstone has touched the lives of thousands of women and their families. Her gentle voice, patience and kind nature complement her important work in the special care nursery and mother/baby unit on the maternity floor. A treasure to so many moms, Johnstone’s goals are centered on supporting mothers in the community beyond their delivery dates.

Johnstone has been a registered nurse for over 40 years and loves her work with babies.

“Newborns are endlessly fascinating and my favorite-sized humans,” she reflects. “Babies are each so unique and amazing; it’s a privilege to be there during those early moments with parents, helping them learn to care for their babies and not be afraid.”

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTONIETTA HENRY MAY 2024 | 15

Providing Resources

Johnstone has always preferred to be bedside, hands-on and in scrubs, as education is her favorite part of the job. Although she has worked in labor and delivery, most of her time is spent in the special care nursery and mother/baby unit.

In addition, she is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. This certification has made her invaluable to mothers learning about breastfeeding while getting the support they may need.

For the last nine years, Johnstone has been proud to hold Breastfeeding Moms Support Group meetings twice a week at Chilton Medical Center. The meetings are a safe space for new mothers and babies up to age 1 and are open to all, even if you didn’t deliver your baby there.

“I want to provide support from

the newborn stage through weaning,” Johnstone says. The meetings are a warm and welcoming place for moms to bring their babies, get advice from Johnstone and share stories with other breastfeeding moms.

“Moms are always giving each other advice on breast pumps, milk storage, baby carriers and how to make more milk,” she says. “There’s no better resource for a breastfeeding mom than another breastfeeding mom.” She describes moments of joy among mothers who were able to relate to and help each other.

Violet McAteer, mom of 4-monthold Maya, says, “I look forward to coming every week.”

Gabriella Sesso, mom of 7-month-old Freddie, says that “the meetings have helped me continue breastfeeding.”

Julia Broady, Jen Chinskey and

Michelle Neidleman Kennedy were some of the first to attend the support meetings with Johnstone, and they began a Facebook page called Milking Ain’t Easy–North Jersey, a private group that’s still going strong and accepting new members.

Using the internet was an important tool during the pandemic as well. Support group meetings continued virtually, and special gifts were delivered to new moms who were feeling extra isolated at the time.

As a nurse and lactation consultant, Johnstone also offers weighted feedings at the meetings for any mom who wishes. “We weigh the babies on hospital-grade scales before and after feedings,” says Johnstone. “A weighted feed is such a useful tool in those early days of nursing. Breastfeeding is very satisfying, but also very challenging; it was for me.”

Education and Encouragement

Her relatability makes Johnstone the perfect person to talk to as a new mother. What’s extra lovely about her is not just her passion for educating new parents but also doing so without judgment.

Johnstone feels that mothers, babies and situations are different and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. When it comes to feeding, each mom is encouraged to find the right fit for them.

“If a mother has decided not to breastfeed, we can teach them how to safely prepare formula, store it, learn about paced feeds and recognize if the baby is tolerating one type of formula over another,” Johnstone says.

She finds that the breastfeeding warm line phone number (see box) is used by mothers not only when reaching out for feeding advice but also

when looking for help with the incredible emotional and hormonal toll that giving birth can take. “Postpartum care and support are crucial at this time,” says Johnstone.

As Johnstone continues to do her wonderful work with mothers and babies, she also enjoys spending time with her beautiful family.

She and her husband, James, have, since 1990, resided in Pompton Plains, where they raised their daughter and son.

The couple will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in June.

Johnstone enjoys reading, gardening and traveling, especially to Maine and Rhode Island. Most of all, Johnstone and James enjoy spending time with their three grandchildren, ages 8, 5 and 3—a fitting passion for a nurse dedicated to children.

HOW TO GET BREASTFEEDING HELP

Breastfeeding Moms Support Group meetings are held Mondays from 11 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Atlantic Health System’s Chilton Medical Center in the maternity unit. For more information and support, call the breastfeeding warm line, 973-831-5263. Calls are returned within 24 hours.

Erin Anello says she surmounts the challenges of raising a large family by counting her blessings— starting with those standing behind her.

Multiplied Motherhood,

How an accomplished mom of nine (with her “A-Team”) raises a family—and doesn’t sweat the small stuff

Erin Anello, of the local Freedom Fence family business, married her Pequannock Township High School sweetheart in 2005 during what became known at the time as the storm of the century.

The blizzard created a state of emergency—it closed roads, forced wedding guests to cancel and created a mess around New Jersey.

“I had heard that a snowy wedding means you’re going to have lots of babies, so maybe it was meant to be,” Anello laughs, fondly remembering the day. “We always wanted a big family anyway.”

Anello and her husband, Vince, got their wish. They now have nine children: Vincenzo III (15), Jack (13), Michael (12), Catherine (11), Julia (9), Salvatore (6), Johnny (4), Erin (2) and Christopher (4 months). They also share their home with a mini goldendoodle pup to round it all out.

MAY 2024 | 19

It Takes a Village

Anello was born and raised in Pompton Plains as one of three children. She holds an advanced degree in public communications from Fordham University, something that likely helps her manage her home “team.”

On top of being a mom of nine, she works as an adjunct professor as opportunities arise at Montclair State University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Kean University and Passaic County Community College. She also works at Cruise Concepts in Pompton Plains. To say she is busy is an understatement.

Erin credits three important people

in her life for making it all work. First and foremost is her husband—her partner in what they charmingly refer to as “The A-Team.” “That’s the only way this works,” Anello says. “I can’t take [sole] credit for anything.”

Recognizing that parenting indeed takes a village, Anello considers herself and her husband to be “the presidents of our village.”

Anello also can’t say enough about all she has learned about motherhood from her own mother and her mother-in-law. Anello credits both women for being extraordinary role models who have helped her be a better mother. “I’m really lucky to have a great mom,” Anello says. “She

showed me how to run a great house and how to be a good wife—and my mother-in-law is the same way.”

Unique to Anello and her husband’s relationship is that they literally grew up together. “Both of our parents have seen us both grow up,” she says. “Our hearts are here.”

Anello says her parents have 13 grandchildren, and her in-laws are expecting their 19th. (Both numbers include Anello’s kids.) A good deal of the extended family lives in the local community, and Anello appreciates the beauty of cousins growing up together and supporting each other, and family being able to see each other often.

20 | PEQUANNOCK

Going With the Flow

“Being a mom is special,” Anello says. “It’s not a job; it’s just what we do. We don’t get paid for it, but it’s the gratitude that makes it so special.”

Anello’s parenting life is full of hilarious stories and precious moments such as the son who thought microwaving his shoes was the way to clean them or the morning lunchmaking mini-assembly line, which includes remembering who likes which snacks and writing lunch box notes.

She praises all moms, understanding that the number of kids you have is not what’s important but the numbers of smiles you get out of them.

“No matter how many kids you have, we all deal with the same stuff,” she says—“the same tantrums, the same things.”

Anello describes feeling an intense sense of pride in seeing her own children support each other. “They all come together to figure things out; they lift each other up,” she says. For example, when her 6-year-old recently won the state wrestling championship, he ran straight into the arms of his big brothers, who were there to celebrate and support him.

“You cannot sweat the small stuff at all,” she says. “You have to let things go. I have to be able to say, ‘Tomorrow is another day’ and go with the flow. We count our blessings—and we have nine to count. If something doesn’t go our way, I think about what other people are going through.”

Anello does her best to be involved in the community. She is on the Home and School Association for North Boulevard

Elementary School and Pequannock Valley Middle School, and is involved in as many daily activities as possible.

“I want to wish all the moms a Happy Mother’s Day,” she says. “I love supporting my kids, helping with homework and science projects, and I love watching the kids play in their sports like soccer, lacrosse and wrestling. It’s just awesome seeing the big kids supporting the little kids.”

Husband Vince often refers to Anello as his queen. “Well, he is my Superman,” she counters with a laugh, adding, “In all the hustle and bustle it’s nice to get a shout-out.”

Remembering Jay Wanczyk

Three community leaders reflect on the late historian and community leader’s legacy.

“History is the heartbeat of a town, and historians are its pulse keepers.”

This saying rings true in the life of Walter Jay Wanczyk, affectionately known as Jay. His sudden passing in late January left a palpable absence in our hearts and the heart of Pequannock Township, where he was revered as more than just a town historian or volunteer but also as a beloved friend whose influence resonated deeply within the community.

At his memorial service in February, held at the historic First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains, tributes flowed freely, painting a portrait of a man whose intellect, generosity and warmth

defined him.

Jay was described as embodying the sentiment that “to know him was to love him.” His broad smile and genuine kindness were infectious. He had a knack for making everyone he encountered feel valued and heard. His insatiable curiosity led him to engage in conversations on a wide array of topics, making him one of the most interesting people in any gathering. He was the kind of person who lived his life on his terms, embracing each day with enthusiasm to its fullest potential.

PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF CHUCK DIGIAMO MAY 2024 | 23

A Passion for the Past Raised in Pequannock Township, Jay was a graduate of Pequannock Township High School and pursued higher education at William Paterson University. He later earned a master’s degree in public administration from New York University. His professional trajectory within the township included roles as a tax collector, assistant town manager and interim town manager. Without a doubt, Jay’s life was representative of one who puts service above self. His involvement in various organizations included Irish American Writers & Artists (and he knew some of the best Irish pubs to visit in New York City).

He co-founded the Pequannock Township Historical Society, and he was a dedicated 38-year, beloved

member of the Pequannock Valley Rotary. Both of these organizations were dear to Jay’s heart and literally close to home for him.

Jay’s passion for history truly set him apart. He was not content with merely documenting the past; he actively shaped it.

In response to the devastating 1984 township flood, Jay scoured archival records and obscure governmental documents, unearthing a forgotten $5 million fund earmarked to purchase and demolish floodprone homes. This proactive measure, valued at $12 million in today’s currency, exemplified Jay’s resourcefulness and his unwavering dedication to the welfare of our residents.

Jay was also instrumental in preserving our township’s historical landmarks. As a driving force behind the

acquisition, restoration and operation of the Pompton Plains Railroad Station that houses the Pequannock Township Museum on the corner of Jackson Road and Evans Place, Jay ensured that the rich history of our township remained alive and accessible to all.

Paul Havemann, co-chair of the Pequannock Township Historical Society, who spoke at Jay’s memorial service, said that—upon viewing all the space of that museum—he never thought there would be enough historical relics to fill it. But Jay found a way.

Similarly, Jay’s advocacy for the preservation of the 1720 Martin Berry House, the second-oldest house in the township, ensured that the rich tapestry of our community’s history remained accessible to future generations.

24 | PEQUANNOCK

Inspiring the Young Jay was a fixture at community events. Whether lending a hand at local fundraisers, sharing knowledge at historical talks or simply offering a friendly smile to a passerby on the new bike path, he embodied the spirit of community engagement.

As a staunch supporter of education, he recognized the importance of imparting knowledge to future generations. Through his involvement with Scouting troops and other groups that visited the township railroad museum, Jay inspired so many young minds to appreciate the significance of their hometown’s history. Some of these youth attended his memorial service and spoke about his impact on their lives.

So, as we reflect on Jay’s legacy, we are reminded of the profound impact that one individual can have on a community. His unwavering dedication, boundless compassion and tireless advocacy serve as an enduring inspiration to us all. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.

From all who knew Jay, we are grateful for the gift of his friendship, for the laughter and the cherished memories.

Jay, you will be deeply missed, but your legacy and all you have done for your friends and community will be forever etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, and may your light shine in each of us, guiding us through the darkness and reminding us to live each day with the same passion you so beautifully embodied.

Jennifer Scheck is Compliance Officer and Analyst, Fair and Responsible Banking, Columbia Bank. Kathleen Pennington is Vice President, Burt P. Augustensen Mortgages. Rev. Kathleen EdwardsChase is Chaplain Resident, Morristown Medical Center. These friends met as members of the Pequannock Valley Rotary, and each met Jay Wanczyk at different times of their lives.

Pequannock’s ‘Walker-Talker’

Joyce Rauch treks into her ninth decade, one step at a time.

You’ve probably seen her: a tiny, beautiful lady with curly hair who walks all over Pequannock.

She walks alone, with friends or while talking on her phone. She goes out in any weather, covering about eight miles daily while wearing a neon vest for safety and carrying her cell phone, a flashlight and an umbrella.

Meet Pequannock resident Joyce Rauch, who recently celebrated an unusual 80th birthday party.

“Planning was fun!” commented

daughters Valerie Munro and Karen Constantino. “We considered many options to celebrate this birthday. But we asked ourselves, what does she enjoy? The answer was: She likes to walk!”

Not a Pedestrian Plan

Following up on this idea, the daughters and other family members put together an event that would rival any 5K race.

They wanted to surprise Rauch, so invitations had to be sneaky. Valerie would drive up to crossing guards or other walkers,

show them a photo of Rauch and say, “Do you know my mom?” If they did, she’d give them an invitation.

Neighbors, friends, family members and Pequannock’s mayor joined in the fun.

With elaborate plans to keep Rauch in her house the morning of February 3, a tent was secretly set up in her yard for registration. Participants arrived at 8:30 a.m. for snacks, pre-race stretches and yoga. When Rauch opened her door that morning, she was greeted by trumpet fanfare and 50 people shouting “Happy birthday!”

A Moving Party

People in the party wore Rauch’s signature neon green vests with bibs reading “Happy 80th Birthday to Pequannock’s WalkerTalker” and together those in the group walked two miles. Walkers carried signs and balloons, and were accompanied by more trumpet music and encouragement from motorists.

Back at Rauch’s home, the celebrating continued with more of her favorites: three-legged races, Hula-Hoop contests and egg-on-spoon competitions. Raffle prizes were awarded, goody bags distributed and two birthday cakes shared.

“I was completely surprised!” Rauch says. Others commented that “It was the best birthday party ever!”

All of Pequannock Township wishes a happy 80th birthday to Pequannock’s Walker-Talker!
