Whether you work from home or in Class AAA office space, dressing well means feeling and looking your best, and our professional stylists provide attentive, unpretentious service to help you get there. We hope you enjoy this issue of Pockets magazine. We are proud of our broad selection of the finest men’s fashion brands in the world. The season’s looks run the gamut from refined tuxedos to elegant casual wear. With so many brands to choose from, clients can pull together complementary looks that don’t look like mono-brand uniforms. ASK MR. ETIQUETTE Andy Weil explains how to sail through life without giving offense. After wearing sweatpants and hoodies for the past year, I’m heading back to the office. What should I wear? —Disconcerted in Dallas
Remember “business casual?” Well, that’s the code word for the new back-to-work fashion. Instead of khakis and polo shirts, try a well-fitted sportcoat (especially if you meet with clients), an open collar sport shirt and the right tailored trousers. Skip the running shoes and wear a fashion sneaker, loafer or polished shoe with a matching belt. We’re slowly returning to some after-work socializing, so on Fridays, swap the trousers for a hip pair of jeans and you’ll be ready to hit your favorite happy hour spot after work.

FALL/WINTER 2021
Whether your first car was a Dodge Viper or a humble Ford sedan, you probably put pedal to the metal once or twice and dreamed of being a Formula One racer. Life’s become more sensible since then, but somewhere deep inside those dreams survive. So take a look at Formula 1: The Impossible Collection (Assouline). In this book, author and former New York Times Formula One reporter Brad Spurgeon describes 100 memorable moments from the previous century that helped catapult F1 to the third spot in popularity (behind the Olympics and World Cup soccer) among the world’s sporting events. With vivid photos, descriptive narratives and insightful interviews, the book highlights races, technological achievements and notable names such as Bruce McLaren, Enzo Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. Consider it the motorsports book to end all books, the winner of the checkered flag.

But if you really want to live like an Italian gentleman, dip into Maria Pasquale’s new book, How to Be Italian: Eat, Drink, Dress, Travel and Love La Dolce Vita (Rizzoli). In it the award-winning journalist touches on everything Italians enjoy, showing us how to savor every moment while indulging in things that simply make us happy: fashion, travel, food and even doing nothing. All of that has been a part of the country’s culture for generations; no wonder some of the greatest artists, designers, thinkers and gourmands have thrived in the boot-shaped land.

Discerning Dallas men trust certain names when looking for timepieces, and they go to Eiseman Jewels to find them. And when it comes to clocks, they turn to L’Epee 1839. The Swiss maker’s latest, “Time Flies,” pays tribute to the skies and one of the most brilliant inventions ever made: the airplane. Made in stainless steel with aged and stabilized bronze color finish, Time Flies features manual winding by counterclockwise rotation of the engine’s radiator and time correction by clockwise rotation of the engine’s radiator behind the propeller. Of course, the clock can “soar” and provide accurate time for a full eight days before “refueling.” L’Epee 1839’s Time Flies can be found in Dallas at Eiseman Jewels.

THE MUSE
Girl Makes Good For entrepreneur and fashion icon Rihanna, becoming a star singer was just the beginning. By Donna Rolando descriptions of her style sense. As a trendsetter, Rihanna is considered as influential as David Bowie, Prince, Michael Jackson and Madonna have been. She’ll pick an outfit for an intriguing silhouette or a slightly “off ” feature—think sweatpants with pearls or a masculine denim jacket with a corset. And by outfit, we mean the works right down to accessories, such as white-rimmed sunglasses with army pants; metallic boots with an orange trench coat; or Louboutin stilettos with a Versace animal print. Her bold approach was hard to beat when she wore an ensemble by Maison Margiela that was topped by a papal-style hat to the 2018 Met Gala with beaded headdress, strapless mini and detailed overcoat. Rihanna did more than turn heads at the 2015 Met Gala, when she appeared in a 55-pound dress of gold thread and fox fur that took an embroideress two years to make. The online frenzy that surrounded Chinese designer Guo Pei’s creation included Photoshop images of a giant pizza or omelette. Beyond laughs, the showstopper was part of director Pietra Brettkelly’s documentary Yellow is Forbidden, a look at haute couture and China. Rihanna is no doubt perfectly at home in this or any controversy, perhaps staying up at night thinking how next to stun her fans. “I’ve never been afraid to take risks,” she says. Love her, hate her or simply don’t know what to make of her, one thing is certain: Her one-word name has entered the culture, whether it’s topping the charts at a given moment or not. “Told you I’ll be here forever,” sings Rihanna in one of her megahits. It seems just possible.
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
Move over, Madonna—and Beyoncé too. Make room for Rihanna. A professed work-work-workaholic, she took top place among female musicians on the 2020 Forbes list of America’s richest self-made entrepreneurs. This was a first for the 33-year-old Barbados native, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, but not unexpected—she signed her first record contract at age 16. Right now, her net worth of $600 million leaves giants like Madonna and Beyoncé in the dust. But Rihanna says she’s more about finding joy in the work than becoming the next billionaire. Fact is, she also shines for her charitable spirit—for example, giving upwards of $8 million to pandemic relief. And her sometimes startling, often stunning personal fashion choices draw notice for sure. It would be easy to file Rihanna under “M” for music. After all, she has amassed nine Grammy Awards as well as multiple American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and Guinness World Records. “Umbrella,” the lead single on her breakthrough 2007 album Good Girl Gone Bad, topped the charts in 13 countries. But she’s also an actress, with films like Ocean’s 8 and Bates Motel under her belt. And the biggest source of her $70 million annual paycheck is not on any playlist. She gets most of her fortune from Fenty Beauty, which she launched in 2017 with 40 foundation shades. To say she filled a need for diversity is an understatement. This cosmetics venture with French luxury goods giant LVMH made $100 million in the first 40 days, $600 million that initial year and is still going strong. Another booming success is Savage X Fenty, a lingerie line valued at $1 billion that she co-owns with LA-based TechStyle Fashion Group. Thriving despite COVID, the size- and gender-inclusive company recently introduced its first bridalwear. In 2019, Rihanna achieved another milestone as the first black woman in charge of a major luxury fashion house in Paris. Under the family name Fenty, she developed a line as diverse as she is, everything from sculptural suits and minis to bright island-hued wraps and tangerine dresses. For her the fashion had to be honest. “I don’t want anyone to pull up my website and think, ‘Rihanna would never wear that.’” That line with partner LVMH was put on hold two years later during the pandemic. Some say it has been shuttered for good. But that’s not about to hold back Rihanna. Beauty and fashion remain her muses as much as chartbusters. She traces this love back to childhood and watching how her mom put together her own individual style. Today the street fashion industry keeps watch on Rihanna as if every ensemble is a future gold mine. Anyone else might feel intimidating pressure knowing that what they pop out of the closet is so inspirational. But not Rihanna. Loud, unapologetic—these are not just album titles, but apt
16 POC.fw21 muse.indd 16
10/14/21 12:16 PM
She may be a Vogue cover, but Rihanna is always the master of her own style. The star of pop and fashion seems the epitome of comfort in this Alexander McQueen original with a sparkling strapless top and a multi-tiered bottom. And no wonder—she has made the covers of everything from Maxim to GQ, a list rivaled only by her awards. She accessorizes with rings from Shay Jewelry, Hoorsenbuhs, Hermès and Delfina Delettrez.

OFF-ROAD ROYALTY
Land Rover’s Defender reigns once more, taking drivers from unpaved trails to city streets with ease and style. By Darius Amos
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
The station wagon was first on the scene; then came the minivan. Today, the sport utility vehicle (SUV) is the preferred family transport option, thanks to ample seating, cargo space and four-wheel-drive systems. (Sporty names suggesting adventure and ruggedness help too.) But as car manufacturers continue to search for the next thing, British automaker Land Rover has opted to spice up its original formula. Returning from a three-year hiatus is the mighty Defender, which was one of the company’s first models when it launched in 1948. (Back then, the trucks were simply named for their wheelbases: the 127, the 110, the 90.) With a fully capable 4WD system, the stylish new iteration maintains the Defender’s standing as an off-roading champ. But as thoroughly as the Defender proves itself on the red rocks in Moab, it does just as well on the interstate and in stop-and-go city traffic. That’s because engineers made three powerful engines available to the vehicle: a turbocharged four cylinder, a turbocharged six and a supercharged, 518-horsepower eight. And the comforts in the cabin mirror those found in an uber-luxurious sedan: hand-stitched leather upholstery, three-zone automatic climate control and a standard 10-inch infotainment system display, to name three. As for the iconic “boxy” appearance of its forebears, the new Defender retains that general shape with a few sexy curves added. Rugged, good-looking and familyfriendly—that’s today’s SUV. Starting at $46,100.
18 POC.fw21.auto.indd 18
10/26/21 12:51 PM
The two-door Defender 90 offers a sporty look, while the four-door 110 is available for practical drivers.
Although the iconic Defender yellow of yesteryear isn’t available for 2022, there are 10 other paint colors to choose from, including Pangea Green and Gondwana Stone, both inspired by ancient supercontinents.
Unlike other Land Rover models that use two screens, the Defender relies on a single 10-inch touchscreen with faster response times to control its infotainment system. An optional 11.4-inch screen is available.
Optional turbocharged six-cylinder and supercharged eight-cylinder engines give the Defender extra power, whether it’s needed to pass in the fast lane or ascend a rocky cliff.
If an SUV with speed is your thing, the Defender’s optional V8 engine produces 518 horsepower and can complete the 0-to-60mph dash in 4.9 seconds.
Traversing rocks, wading across streams and hopping a curb are easy tasks for the Defender, which has 11.5 inches of ground clearance.
An air spring suspension upgrade enables the driver to adjust the ride height on the fly.

TEXAS’ ULTIMATE PLAYGROUND By Kersten Rettig

| POCKETS MENSWEAR
“What do you want people to say about it when they’re standing around the barbecue pit?” How is that for a marketing strategy? It works for James Archer, the owner of JL Bar Ranch, an all-inclusive luxury ranch, resort and spa located between Sonora and Junction, Texas. The sprawling 13,000-acre ranch is the ultimate Texas playground with luxury accommodations, five-star cuisine and a sumptuous spa—table stakes for any luxury resort—as well as high-fence exotic game, white-tail deer and upland bird hunting. Oh, and if you prefer, you can land your own plane at JL Bar Ranch’s own FBO airport.

James and his wife, Lois, opened JL Bar Ranch in 2016. An entrepreneur by spirit, Archer started a company in his home garage in 1993, turning it into a $365 million-a-year firm which he sold in 2011 to one of the world’s largest oilfield services companies. James is a successful businessman, still in the energy business, but expanded into hospitality and the music industry because he has a heart for them and because, frankly, he could. The setting of JL Bar Ranch is pure Texas. Located between central Texas and Big Bend, a region that can look harsh to some, Sonora is dotted with rolling hills and limestone outcrops partially cloaked by juniper and live oaks. Scrubby underbrush and cacti abound. At 2,129 feet above sea level, the area is dry and mostly clear with annual temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to low 90s, which is, for Texas, downright pleasant. The ranch’s design works seamlessly with its environment, using natural stone and timber to blend into the area’s neutral palette. The abundance of land and the infinite blue sky above afforded the Archers the ability to create an expansive main lodge which centralizes their hospitality with public areas for relaxing, playing pool, and enjoying a drink and a meal. The Main Lodge also offers breathtaking views of the ranch from the second story where guests can see acres of oak trees that offer color and canopy.
SLEEP TIGHT In contrast to the rustic setting of the land, rooms here are warm and welcoming. JL Bar Ranch offers 32 luxury accommodations: 16 stand-alone cabins and 16 spacious guestrooms, each outfitted with sophisticated Texas-inspired custom furnishings and
modern amenities. Sleeping arrangements include rooms with single king beds, double queens and even a configuration perfect for families traveling with children, with two queen beds and a single twin. Large groups can land in the Archer’s Nest Villa, the original homestead of the ranch, which was established in 1906, a magnificently updated home with seven bedrooms, five of which include en-suite bathrooms. The Villa is ideal for entertaining and features a modern outdoor kitchen, resort-style pool and pool house and an indoor theater.
DIG IN There are plenty of places to whet your whistle and enjoy a satisfying meal at JL Bar Ranch. There are a variety of outlets available to guests depending on your mood, though some are only available through group or private bookings. The standard “three-meal” resort restaurant is spacious and elegant, offering communal or intimate dining. The Lonesome Creek Patio and Bar features indoor and outdoor dining and is reportedly the best place to catch a West Texas sunset. An added guest favorite that extends beyond the normal ranch dining experience, since it is only available upon request, is a private dinner for two in the JL Bar Main Lodge Wine Cellar with your own personal server. The culinary program at JL Bar Ranch is a strong selling point. The resort has a robust culinary staff, with an executive chef, a pastry chef and a team of station chefs to supply meals, snacks and specialties for the guests. The cuisine is seasonally focused, with plentiful beef options and creative pizzas from the wood-fired pizza oven.

The Ranch has an impressive wine list curated by a pair of sommeliers who came to the property from Napa. The Wine Cellar and Tasting Room is filled with collectibles and “approachables,” wines that appeal to guests whether they are oenophiles or casual drinkers.
This page, top, the infinity pool at JL Bar Ranch; from left, exquisite high fence and domestic hunting is available on JL Bar Ranch’s 13,000 acres; JL Bar Ranch has a state-of-the-art FBO; catch a West Texas sunset from the Main Lodge. GAME ON
JL Bar Ranch’s private airport is a state-of-the-art operation that is capable of landing jets up to a Gulfstream G650. Whether you have your own personal aircraft or participate in shared services through providers such as Jet Linx and NetJets, JL Bar Ranch is a full-service FBO with fueling capabilities and hangar spaces for multiple jets, lounges for crews and passengers and two conference rooms with full technology capabilities.
SERVICE WITH A SMILE
|
Happy staff means happy guests, and JL Bar Ranch takes care of its staff so they can take care of the guests. James Archer’s personal code is to have integrity and be honest—to do the right thing for all stakeholders in his life, whether that’s family, friends, employees or guests. The Archers provide benefits and meals to their full-time staff and even have Staff Camp, free lodging for any employees who don’t live locally. Hospitality starts at home, and for the staff of JL Bar Ranch, they have a work family home that is meant to give them comfort. James Archer wants people to stand around the barbecue pit and recall the glorious time they spent at JL Bar Ranch. He wants them to talk about the sunsets, the rides and the successful hunts, the memories they made and the new friends they met. And they probably do. JL Bar Ranch Resort & Spa is open year-round. Hunting opportunities vary by season. Airport access requires advanced permission. Learn more about JL Bar Ranch Resort & Spa at jlbar.com.
FALL/WINTER 2021
Perhaps one of the best things about staying at JL Bar Ranch is that you can enjoy all elements of a ranch without having to own one. This land has some of the best white-tail-deer hunting in the state, but it’s James Archer’s commitment to wildlife preservation and habitat and game management that’s even more impressive. Archer understands the ecosystem, and he’s hired a team of ranch and game managers, including a game biologist, to ensure preservation of natural resources required to keep the ranch’s game population and land healthy and sustainable. This is a hunter’s paradise. Sonora’s white-tail deer hunting is legendary, and not long ago, a world-record blackbuck was harvested at JL Bar Ranch. Of the 13,000 acres of land, 648 of them are high-fence pastures, and hunters have access to 15 kinds of exotics including four species of deer, eight types of sheep including mouflon and aoudad and gemsbok, addax and oryx antelope. All hunts are fully guided and are conducted from custom tower blinds or by spot and stalk.

FOREVER IN BLUE JEANS
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
Feeling blue over finding perfect denim? Let Pockets’ style pros guide you to find the best style, fit and wash for you. Blue jeans have always seemed to be a grab-and-go item for men. First, there weren’t many brands or fits to choose from: Wranglers or Levi’s, boot cut or not. If you were really cool, you might have worn Jordache or Guess jeans. Denim technology has evolved, fortunately, as has the acceptance of it in the workplace and five-star restaurants. That leaves more opportunities to wear different styles of jeans and to get jean wearing right (and wrong). How do you know which brand, fit, wash and style is best for you? At Pockets, we have well-curated selection of jean brands that are made with the highest quality denim and consistency in the fit and sizing to make buying jeans an easier experience. We also have a team that knows which brands work best for which clients. At Pockets in Plano’s Legacy West shopping center, ask Boo, Tim or any of the Pockets team to help you find the perfect pairs of jeans. Start with the basic elements of fit: waist (high or mid-rise), seat, thigh, calves and length/inseam. If every day is calf day at the gym, then you need a pair of jeans that will accentuate your calves without cutting off circulation. Different brands have different fits, and they know which brand works for different body styles. Nelson and Kent lead the Pockets Dallas jean team with their keen experience helping clients discover which jean type is best for each man. Nelson’s personal favorites are PT Torino and Jacob Cohen for their look and fit. Monfrère denim is a line that tends to fit most of Nelson’s clients and, with so many styles to choose from, an easy sell. Whichever jeans you buy, take good care of them. They are fine to go in the washing machine but always inside out and never in hot water. Hanging dry is always best. Denim experts say you can wear jeans up to 10 times without washing them, certainly if your jeans are made with elastane, which breaks down with each wash. Having said that, nothing looks or feels as good as a fresh, clean pair of well-fitting jeans. Both Pockets locations carry premium denim from AG, Hudson, Jacob Cohen, Marco Pescarolo, Monfrère, Paige, PT Torino, S.M.N, Teleria Zed and Tramarossa. They also carry great selections of footwear and belts so you can try several looks while you’re there.

SKINNY FIT Popularized by young hipster types in the late ’00s, the skin-tight denim phenomenon stuck around for about a decade before trends began to shift. But with slight modifications, today’s skinny-fit jeans are both fashionable and comfortable—and yes, they do allow breathing. How they fit: The skin-tight feeling has given way to something more modern. Keep doing those squats because this style still hugs your seat and thighs. Most are mid-rise, meaning that the waistline will sit slightly below your belly button, but guys with uber-thin, Mick Jagger-type bods will benefit from a low-rise jean that sits closer on the hip. Dudes also should pay attention to the level of skinniness in the leg. Many brands still offer jeans that carry the close fit all the way through the ankle, but if that tightness is too boy-band for you, opt for a pair with only a slight taper at the bottom. Who’s wearing them: Paparazzi often capture style icon Harry Styles wearing a pair of black denim skinny jeans with a statement button-up and Chelsea boots, but your day-to-night look can be perfect with a lightwash pair and a long-fit T-shirt. And while skinny fit may be favored by the nightclub crowd, it’s also suitable for the discerning man. Pair a subtler skinny jean with a sportcoat and loafers for a sophisticated look that is far from dated.
SLIM FIT It’s easy to use “skinny” and “slim” interchangeably in conversation, and there are indeed similarities when you’re talking about garments. But if you have a slightly fuller body, you’ll want to know the difference when putting on a pair of pants. How they fit: Like skinny-fit denim, slimfits also are close to the seat and thighs. They differ, however, in the leg opening— the calf and ankle loosen in most of the latter styles, providing greater mobility. Average slim-fit jeans are constructed with a mid-rise—meaning that the length from the crotch to the belt is anywhere between 9 and 11 inches—and give off a casual vibe. High-rise slim-fit jeans sit just above the waist and provide a neater, sometimes tailored appearance. Who’s wearing them: Slim-fit jeans are a great everyday cut for men looking to take the town by storm. Their versatility and ability to be paired with everything from sweaters and button-up shirts to sneakers and monk straps make them a preferred choice. And though they’re popular with Hollywood’s trim leading men, guys of all body types can feel confident in a pair because the slightly tapered yet close fit complements any figure.
REGULAR FIT In the beginning, jeans were utilitarian pants worn for any and every task— thus, comfort was the priority, then fashion. That meant they had to provide the wearer plenty of room to move while still appearing tidy. That’s the story of regular fit. How they fit: Unlike slim-fit denim, which has a narrow silhouette and hugs the body, regular-fit jeans have a straight fit through the hips and thighs. In other words, they’re not too loose, not too tight. Though there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all pant, regular fit comes close. For shorter guys the style’s mid-rise adds balance while elongating the body’s frame. Taller fellows also benefit from the mid-rise, which can reduce the visual appearance of long legs. Who’s wearing them: These jeans are perfect for casual Fridays at the office. The extra fabric standard in regular jeans gives added comfort to all body types. This style pairs well with sport shirts and boots for a casual or rugged look, but a darker wash can be dressed up easily with a dress shirt, sweater and monk strap shoes.
LOOSE FIT By considering a few sartorial rules, you can rock loose-fitting jeans and always be in style. How they fit: Loose-fit jeans offer maxcomfort feel and max-casual vibe. That’s because the style is typically cut to sit below the waist, providing extra room in the seat and thigh area. The straight leg also is roomy, but doesn’t give off an excessive bulky or baggy appearance. A high-rise fit can help men with larger waists flatten their mid-sections and shape their rear ends; it also allows more room in the leg for dudes with bigger calves. Watch the length of the leg: Jeans should not extend past the top of the shoes. Who’s wearing it: This style is best kept in casual settings (ball games and the like), but a variety of styles—different colors, patterns and washes, for example—will keep outfits interesting. For a smart combo, wear loose jeans in a light wash with layered pieces like hoodies, bomber jackets or large coats. Because of the jeans’ relaxed nature, finish a loosefit outfit with boots or sneakers.
FALL/WINTER 2021
DENIM THAT’S NOT DENIM Gold-rush miners of the 1850s knew they were wearing durable pants, but little did they know that their garb would be a long-lasting fashion trend. Of course, indigo-dyed cotton denim has come a long way since then, going through more than a century’s worth of transformations and incarnations (some memorable, others regrettable). Today’s jeans and five-pocket pants are better than ever: They’re just as durable to wear to a 9-to-5 job, whether you’re mining or managing clients, but they are constructed with comfort and style in mind too. Top designers such as Jacob Cohen and Monfrère are incorporating fabrics such as elastane and Lycra to give their pant formulas stretch properties. Four-way stretch denim, for instance, provides the ultimate luxury. These pants stretch in four different directions, so they move with your body while you’re on the go, and they won’t lose their shape as they stretch over time—that was an issue with earlier stretch jeans. They’re also super-soft (like your athleisure wear), so you can relax in a pair while you watch the whole ball game or binge the entire series of a Netflix show on your couch. Available in different washes and colors, stretch denim and five-pocket pants can be used equally in an office setting or out on the town. You’ll be tempted to wear them at the health club— they’re that comfortable—but go with the shorts and sweats for your workout.

PURSUITS
Go wild in the snow Because you’re still a kid at heart, rekindle that snow-day magic with a sled that knows no limits. By Donna Rolando
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
Calling all renegades! Do you live your life undeniably on the edge, or have an inner wild child? We all reveal a lot about our personality with our style of ride—a Ferrari or a Subaru, a Hummer or a Benz. A snowmobile is no exception. If it’s not enough for you to conquer snow-packed mountains defying winter’s worst…if you’re the type that craves variety in your terrain, as in your life…the Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E-Tec just may be your next surprise gift for the deserving you. You’d expect quite a selection from Ski-Doo. After all, the original SkiDoo was also the first snowmobile, invented by Canadian businessman Joseph-Armand Bombardier more than 60 years ago. And the brand has never lost its spirit of invention. One of several trailblazers, the Renegade X-RS 850 E-Tec packs several redesigns as it caters to the rebel in all of us, hence its name. First of all, this baby is a crossover, which means trail or no trail, no problem. And with a lightweight chassis—the entire Renegade weighs slightly less than 500 pounds—this crossover is the one sled you need to master both groomed and powder. Then there’s the Rotax 850 E-Tec Turbo engine—“for those who won’t be denied,” as Ski-Doo puts it. Designed for Ski-Doo, this factory twostroke turbo makes 165 horsepower at elevation on pump fuel. Thanks to simplicity and reliability, you can focus on why you geared up in the first
place: the ride. And there’s no turbo lag, because that can spoil even the “snowest” of adventures. One key innovation that draws applause is the available Smart-Shox technology, a system of shock absorbers and sensors that can add three levels of comfort to your ride, even on the whoops (washboard-like terrain). You may wonder how these souped-up sleds can hit the mad slopes of winter like a conqueror, working to control pitch and prevent body roll by keeping the vehicle flat. It’s dial-in technology that lets Smart-Shox read the terrain and rider input to tailor the ride to your mood and conditions. It happens in an instant and with great precision. The result? An epic ride, no matter what. Other features include the rMotion X rear suspension and RAS X front suspension, which work together for precision handling no matter what nature throws your way. They allow the Renegade to handle corners like a pro in true Ski-Doo style. With its constant upgrades, Ski-Doo is known for chasing down perfection with each new model. Take the Pilot X skis, another redesign with more positive traction; and don’t forget the thicker aluminum RS running boards made to take tough landings. They provide aggressive stand-up ability for that competitive edge. And because even the most robust adventurer doesn’t want to get lost after dark, one option is a techie-approved widescreen 7.8-inch fullcolor display. Escape but never lose touch with GPS, Bluetooth and helmet-tohelmet communication. The 2021 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E-Tec starts at around $15,000. But if you live for winter just to race the fresh stuff, it may be worth indulging. What a way to celebrate snow days!
Up your cold-weather coolness factor with the Renegade X-RS 850 E-Tec by Ski-Doo. This snowmobile is luxury on ice: It comes equipped with a lightweight chassis and two-stroke turbo engine that makes 165 horsepower, while a 7.8-inch widescreen display with GPS, Bluetooth tech and helmet-tohelmet communication are available for those who want to ride in style.

Spirits of Mexico Make Their Mark in Dallas By Kersten Rettig
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
All photos courtesy of Las Almas Rotas

By its very definition, a shrine is a place filled with symbols, artifacts and relics that celebrate a spirit. There’s a soulful little restaurant and bar in Dallas’ Exposition Park that’s a shrine to many spirits—the spirits of Mexico: Mezcal, tequila, raicilla, sotol and even Mexican whiskey, gin and rum. This shrine is warm and earthy, the décor hand honed yet sophisticated like the spirits it serves. Las Almas Rotas Mezcaleria is the upshot of neighbors who gathered regularly in one another’s homes with friends to sample mezcals. The neighbors, Leigh and Shad Kvetko and Taylor Samuels, found a funky little space on Parry Street across from Fair Park and opened in 2017. Their collective areas of expertise didn’t include owning or working in a restaurant, but Taylor grew up in a family with generational experience in distilling whiskey, which resonates with the families who produce and sell the artisanal spirits featured at Las Almas Rotas. Like all shrines, this one is serious about honoring spirits. Every one of the more than 300 spirits that line the shelves is responsibly sourced and don’t have artificial additives found in many well-known mezcal and tequila brands. What does responsibly sourced and produced mean? Tequila and mezcal production follow the same basic process: grow, harvest, cook, crush, ferment, distill, bottle, consume. Repeat. Las Almas Rotas carefully sources spirits from producers, artisans, really, who respect ancestral production methods. That means using only mature agave from cultivated fields; cooking or roasting the agave in stone or brick ovens versus using acid-thermal hydrolysis; extracting the agave through manual means using tahonas, or roller mills, rather than diffusers; and using open-air fermentation without adding synthetic yeast to accelerate the process. Fine spirits are all too frequently defined not by their quality, but by their marketing budgets. Celebrities are tripping over each other to brand their own tequilas, but does that make them good? Taste for yourself but start at Las
POC.fw21.Las_Almas_Rotas.indd 42
Almas Rotas, where you won’t find celebrity spirits (though you might find celebrities), rather small batch spirits from some of Mexico’s most respected producers. Small batch tequilas from Fortaleza, Cascahuín and Ocho and mezcals from Montelobos, Gracias a Dios and Rey Campero. Las Almas Rotas offers thoughtfully assembled flights that take guests on a spiritual journey throughout Mexico. Guests can choose flights that include a progression of reposados from the fruitier Highlands to the peppery Lowlands, mezcals made from five different species of agave—a flight of Mexican spirits made throughout the country which include tequila, mezcal, sotol, a non-agave spirit made from dasylirion, a relative to asparagus, and raicilla, an agave spirit that’s produced with fruit grown outside of the governmentapproved geography for mezcal designation. With every order, whether it’s a flight or Las Almas Rotas’ award-winning margarita, comes expertise delivered by passionate and well-trained servers who, like the owners, are committed to preserving and honoring the culture of Mexico and its primordial expression. Like the setting and the drinks, the service is unpretentious and warm. Maybe for you, artisanal tequilas and mezcals are old hat, but what do you know about Mexican whiskey, gin and rum? Try them out at Las Almas Rotas where they have curated a collection of the best in class. Mexicans have been making whiskey since prohibition, when American distillers shipped their unusable American white oak barrels to Mexico, which were used to create reposado and añejo tequilas, and to age whiskey made with their abundant Mexican corn. Los Almas Rotas offers several varieties, including Sierra Norte’s Mexican Whiskey made with Native Oaxacan Black Corn. Try it in an Old Fashioned or straight up. Tequila’s younger spiritual sister is gin, which was invented in the 13th century. Today, Mexican gin is made with espadín agave from Oaxaca and is steeped in more than 30 botanicals native to Mexico. Las Almas Rotas serves

Gracias a Dios gins, which were created by students at Oaxaca State and are beautiful and floral with appropriate notes of juniper. The same regions that produce agave are home to acres of sugarcane, which are used to create Mexican rum, also known as Aguardiente de Caña. The bar menu here includes an authentic daquiri made from Paranubes Rum, which might well be one of the reasons Las Almas Rotas was recognized as a 2020 James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist for Outstanding Bar Program in the U.S. Lest you’re concerned that too much alcohol will render your soul broken, Las Almas Rotas has simple but strong culinary offerings that include authentic tacos, tortas, enchiladas, pozole, and other handmade items. The corn tortillas are the real deal, made with nixtamalized corn so the texture is a little chewy and firm, and flavor is a rich corn that makes the pork belly tacos ineffably good. Las Almas Rotas translates to “The Broken Souls,” but there’s nothing broken about this gem in Dallas. It is, rather, uplifting to enjoy artisanal drinks and food in a venue so thoughtfully created.

Noble Texas Wines By Kersten Rettig
| POCKETS MENSWEAR
The Pitzer family is well-known around Dallas, but the name Pitzer could very well become a household name throughout the state of Texas and maybe even the world. Why? Dallas native Austin Pitzer and his wife, Katie, launched Noblemen Wines, a brand whose name is a hat tip to the founding Noblemen of Fredericksburg, Texas, in 2019. Though in its infancy, the wine is already creating huge buzz.
Noblemen Wines is the manifestation of years of learning the wine business from the ground up, literally. Armed with a business degree from Baylor but uninterested in the 9-to-5 business track, Austin headed west to Landmark Vineyards, one of the oldest in the country, and worked as a harvest intern, sorting grapes, sanitizing equipment and other “bottom of the barrel” tasks. He moved up to tasting room attendant and, from there, never looked back. Austin is essentially self-taught, learning every step of wine growing, harvesting and producing from working directly with professionals in the field and at top wineries. Katie has an extensive background in strategic marketing and social and digital media, including six years at AT&T, and she also lead the communications for a top wine marketing firm in St. Helena, California. Her expertise and talents align perfectly with Austin’s, so when the time was right for them to return to Texas after a few years in the California wine country, they knew it would be to create their own wine label. Noblemen Wines creates and sells wines the Pitzers themselves love to drink made with grapes that grow well in Texas. The intersection of those data sets contains four wines: Mourvèdre, Tannat and Piquette, all made with Texas High
Plains-grown grapes, and Picpoul Blanc, made with Hill Country grapes. The wines are, by design, delicious, drinkable and unpretentious. These varietals aren’t as domestically famous as Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon, the two most grown in the U.S., but they’re well known and loved in Europe and South America. One expression you might only taste through Noblemen is the Piquette, a 100 percent Mourvèdre, effervescent, fruity low-alcohol wine that should be on everyone’s holiday wine list. Though getting good, consistent fruit is always a challenge for any winemaker, the Pitzers admit one of their main challenges is educating casual wine drinkers about Mourvèdre, Picpoul and Tannat grapes and, along with other Texas wine makers, convincing wine snobs that Texas produces excellent wines. The Texas wine industry is expected to generate $15 billion in activity for the state of Texas this year and is attracting the attention of wine connoisseurs as the product continues to improve. Noblemen Wines has elevated the up-andgrowing wine industry in Texas. Though there’s no storefront winery, the wines are made in Kerrville, and fans can enjoy tastings by reservation only at Kerrville Hills Winery. If you can’t wait for a road trip to taste them, you can purchase Noblemen Wines at noblemenwines.com.
