L LONGEVITY

We designed this, the seventh issue of our annual magazine, with longevity in mind. This year, three of our four locations celebrate monumental anniversaries: 21 years in our free-standing Addison location, 15 years in Highland Park, and 10 years in Hinsdale. Remaining family-owned and operated, the third generation working hand-in-hand with the second, we are honored to continue a legacy that began decades ago with a dream and steadfast determination. Here we share the story of Stanley Razny and his wife Jane, our founders. Gifted artisans with an uncanny ability to sketch and mold breathtaking jewelry, their ingenuity continues to inspire our passion for custom creation today. We are one of the few families offering unparalleled design services and exquisite craftsmanship. We are proud to say that, when designing a masterpiece with us, your only limit is your imagination. Reflecting on the principles that have been our foundation since 1951, we are shining a spotlight on the values of the brands with which we choose to partner. From the reincarnation of Cartier’s iconic Tank to the always ingenious Rolex Daytona to Patek Philippe’s timely Aquanaut, it is clear that the secret to a long life in this business is no secret at all. It comes down to hard work and ethics.

We’ve pored over the stories of designers who, much like us, have followed a calling to create esteemed jewelry. We have formed relationships with artisans who choose to elevate our industry’s trusted standards. Their willpower and achievements are continually motivating.

Of course, nothing is worthy of commitment and preservation more than family. We are delighted to unveil our exclusive bridal collection, inspired by the couples who have made us a part of their happily ever after for over 65 years. It is a collection that we call Forever by RaznySM. Available now at all four of our locations, it reflects perfectly love’s individuality.

Thank you for your support and for helping our family achieve excellence since 1951. We look forward to serving you for generations to come.

ALWAYS ELEGANT:

CARTIER

The Maison reinterprets its most iconic watches in classic style. Luxury jeweler and watchmaker Cartier has been on quite a glamorous tear of late, updating its lines in a way that honors its storied past—adorning crowned heads of Europe and Hollywood royalty—as well as striving to appeal to a new generation of clients. Last year, the company re-launched its legendary Panthère de Cartier watch. Originally making its debut in 1983, the Panthère signified the classic glamour the Maison is known for around the world. Devotees who wore the Panthère in the 1980s and 1990s include Madonna, Jane Fonda, Brooke Shields and Grace Jones. Cartier’s international marketing and communications director Arnaud Carrez called last year’s reintroduction of the Panthère de Cartier watch “the most

important launch” of the year. To this end, Cartier engaged filmmaker Sofia Coppola, a longtime friend of the Maison—she famously bought herself a Tank after completing the film Marie Antoinette—to create a 60-second short about the new collection. According to Mr. Carrez, Ms. Coppola “has always resonated with the spirit of Cartier as an icon of style, taste and elegance.” Sized at 22mm and 27mm, the new Panthère uses a quartz movement and is available in pink gold, yellow gold, steel, and steel and gold. Showing no signs of slowing down, Cartier released an all-new version of the Santos de Cartier watch this year. Originally designed in 1904 for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont after he complained about the difficulties of using a pocket watch while flying, the Santos became part of Cartier’s product line in 1978. It was a huge success, even appearing on the wrist of Michael Douglas in his Oscar-winning turn as Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie Wall Street. The Santos de Cartier collection has been updated with new iterations, while maintaining the same square shape and eight screws on the bezel of the original models, and with an 1847 MC automatic caliber movement. The new watches feature an innovative QuickSwitch system in order easily to change between bracelet and leather straps, as well as SmartLink selffitting technology that allows wearers to adjust the length of the metal bracelet themselves. To commemorate the line’s 100th anniversary, Cartier has also issued redesigns of its iconic Tank collection: the Américaine last year and the Cintrée this year. The epitome of style and grace, the Tank was Jackie Kennedy’s watch of choice. Offered in steel for the first time, the Américaine comes in small (34.8mm x 19mm) with a quartz movement as well as medium (41.6mm x 22.6mm) and large (45.1mm x 22.6mm), both with an automatic movement. The Cintrée, the Américaine’s inspiration and a favorite of Fred Astaire, is a manual-wind watch with in-house caliber 8971-MC movement. It has a curved case that’s a little longer and slimmer than the Américaine, and is available in pink gold, yellow gold and limited edition platinum with black, light champagne and gray dials, respectively.

Sofia Coppola, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Fred Astaire are all pictured wearing their favored Cartier Tank timepieces. Pictured left to right are three current models of Cartier timepiece: Panthère de Cartier in 18K pink gold and steel, bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds, the new Tank Cintrée in yellow gold with a golden dial and brown alligator strap, Tank Française in steel case set with 26 brilliant-cut diamonds.

For more than a century, Cartier has furnished the world’s elite with innovative, elegantly designed wristwatches. The brand continues to dazzle not only with its continuing commitment to quality and style, but with its imagination and boundless energy to reinterpret, redesign and reinvent. There is more than just a little magic in that red box.

RAZNY JEWELERS

MONUMENTAL ANNIVERSARIES

A sincere commitment to excellence and trustworthiness has served Razny Jewelers well for over six decades. In the 1940’s, when Stanley Razny Sr. and his wife Jane immigrated to America from Poland, Stanley worked as a bench jeweler for Leed’s Jewelers in Highland Park, IL. He earned a loyal following for his brilliant couture designs, wowing clients with dazzling diamonds carefully arranged within intricate settings, crafted to last a lifetime. In 1951, Stanley and his wife Jane opened their first small jewelry store in Oak Park, IL before a partnership quickly guided them to the nearby suburb of Elmhurst. Jane earned her degree as a graduate gemologist, and within 30 years the family moved their store to Addison, IL, proudly placing the Razny name on the front door. With a boutique of his own, Stanley could create without inhibition. His designs grew even more breathtaking. In 1986, Stan Jr. chose to work alongside his parents, leaving his career as a corporate accountant. His entrepreneurial spirit was the catalyst to the Razny family’s first steps toward expansion. The decision was swiftly made to improve on the original Addison location, doubling the store’s size. In 1996, Ingrid Razny also left the life of an accountant to join her husband and in-laws in the family business. Soon after, the Razny family designed what is now a 12,000 square foot, free-standing jewelry store in Addison that remains the flagship location of Razny Jewelers to this day. It was there in Addison that a legacy was born, lasting three generations and expanding to four locations throughout the Chicago area. In 2002, after establishing a well-earned reputation for exquisite designs and impeccable artisanship, Stanley and Jane passed the torch to their son and his wife. Stan and Ingrid have made it their mission to establish Razny Jewelers as the most welcoming, progressive, and trustworthy jewelry experience in the Chicagoland area. Under their direction, Razny Jewelers continues to create breathtaking, unique custom jewelry, designed to last for generations. This year, three locations are celebrating monumental anniversaries. We are pulling out all the stops to honor our tenacious heritage while celebrating the bright future made possible by loyal clients who view our family as their family.

It was here that our partnership with Rolex, a brand synonymous with excellence and ingenuity, first began in 1998. The most soughtafter timepiece name in the world, Rolex is built on a culture of philanthropy, improving the lives of others through their Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Their generosity inspires us as we continue supporting the causes dear to our family, our clients, and the city of Chicago.

th

A year later, in 1999, Razny Jewelers earned the privilege to represent timepieces by Patek Philippe, the last independent, family-owned Genevan manufacture and considered by many to be the most prestigious watchmaker in the world. A dedication to independence, a tradition of innovation, and a passion for exclusive rarity are three of Patek’s ten core values. The Patek Philippe mentality is one we share.

HIGHLAND PARK — 2003 Awarded for excellence in masonry, the structure housing

our Highland Park location was designed and built by the Razny family. Here in the North Shore, we’ve taken our time to learn what works. Our specialists live within the community and understand the needs of our clientele. We hand-select each item displayed as if we were choosing jewelry and timepieces for a dear friend. The families of Highland Park and the surrounding areas have rewarded our meticulous care with a loyalty that is nothing short of humbling. We are the destination in the North Shore for Rolex, Patek Phillipe, and Cartier.

ADDISON — 1997 The Addison location, our flagship, is full of history.

Expanding in 2019, Razny Jewelers will be taking over the entire area previously occupied by Northern Trust Bank. As we grow, we look forward to being the jeweler generations of North Shore residents call their own.

HINSDALE — 2008

World-renowned craftsmanship meets small-town sensibilities; residents of the western suburbs and downtown dwellers looking for a change of scene, flock to Hinsdale for the neighborhood’s upscale shopping district. Specialists at our Hinsdale boutique are known throughout Chicagoland for their friendly service and expertise. Families stop in often while walking their dogs or running errands with their children — even if only to chat. They’ve thoughtfully stitched our family into the patchwork of their lives, and we are proud to be the jeweler they choose for all the times that matter to them most.

CHICAGO — 2016

Our brand-new Euro-style boutique in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is the second luxury shopping concept of its kind in the country. This 7500 sq. ft. three-story location, designed to showcase the world’s leading Swiss timepieces by Rolex and Patek Philippe, now also includes luxury safes and watch winders from German craftsmen Buben & Zorweg. For our brides-to-be, on the second floor, you will find a captivating collection of our bridal jewelry brand, Forever by Razny. The Razny Family is excited to introduce Forever by Razny to Chicago because it embodies the beauty and brilliance of true everlasting love. Now couples can find their forever-ring from a forever family-owned and operated jeweler. On the third floor is housed an exclusive Rolex Watch Repair Center, bringing the attention to detail Geneva’s known for to Chicago. Along with our Addison and Highland Park locations, this boutique is the recipient of the Rolex Authorized Service Plaque. Equipped to service almost any timepiece brand, this is now an inclusive one-stop shop for horology aficionados and enthusiasts.

FOR OVER 65 YEARS,

and now three generations, Razny Jewelers remains family owned and operated, providing custom design services, quality designer jewelry, and value. Today, we find parents wearing engagement rings crafted by the hands of Stan Sr. shopping for or designing bridal rings with their children while being assisted by Christine and Michael Razny, the third generation of Razny Jewelers. It is this longevity that we are proud of most. From our family to yours, we look forward to helping your dreams come true with jewelry and timepieces that you and your loved ones will enjoy for generations to come.

Formula 1 champion driver Jochen Rindt and his wife Nina (above left and right) were 1960s trendsetters. The stylish Nina had a lasting effect on how women wear watches, supplanting fashion rules with a single dictum: Wear whatever you like.

HIS OR HERS Personal style transcends the idea of men’s- or ladies’-only timepieces. In the watch world, to say you own a Nina— or an Evil Nina (the reverse color way)— means you have somehow gotten your hands on a 1960s Universal Genève Compax chronograph with a panda dial, named for Nina Rindt, Finnish model and wife of 1970 World Champion Formula 1 driver Jochen Rindt. (Incidentally, he wore a Heuer Autavia now commonly referred to as a “Rindt.”). In the 1960s, Mrs. Rindt was often spotted trackside wearing the 36mm Compax on an oversized leather cuff strap as she timed her husband’s practice laps. From her famous fedora to that chunky watch ironically encircling her slender model’s wrist, Nina Rindt was a trendsetter whose talent for combining traditionally men’s and women’s elements to create a unique style

is even more relevant 50 years later. As the cultural and stylistic boundaries between male and female become increasingly blurred, choosing a luxury watch has become an exercise in personal style that transcends the idea of men’s- or ladies’-only. Consider, for example, the Rolex Datejust. With sizes ranging from 28mm to 41mm and almost unlimited configurations, colors and levels of embellishment available in every size, ladies vs. men’s is irrelevant when it comes to selecting a model. The only considerations are personal comfort—with regard to how the watch fits and feels on your wrist—and whether or not a particular configuration reflects your taste and lifestyle. Without gender constraints, shopping for a luxury Swiss timepiece becomes less about conformity to a preset standard and more about

individual expression and creativity. Another fine choice is Patek Philippe, whose slogan has long been, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” It doesn’t matter if the next generation is made up of sons or daughters, because the Nautilus and the Calatrava are available in a myriad of sizes, colors, and with varying levels of embellishment and complication. You can choose a watch that embodies your individual sensibilities, circumstances and traditions. One wonders whether Nina and Jochen Rindt’s daughter, Natasha, wears her mother’s Compax or her father’s Autavia these days, or if she has chosen something all her own. Perhaps the answer is “all of the above,” and why not? Personal style is what you make it.

CHICAGO’S BEST SPEAKEASY BARS These are three spots worth searching for.

Even 100 years later, Chicago can’t escape its connection to Al Capone and the infamous speakeasy bars of the 1920s, where gangsters and patrons alike rubbed elbows in their search for alcohol, which was outlawed during the Prohibition. Tucked down a back alley, in a warehouse, behind a drug store or in the most unlikely of places, these clandestine saloons were hidden to the police, yet accessible to those in the know via basements, tunnels, and concealed doors. While the gangsters are now long gone and spirits are easy to find, the secretive speakeasy is more popular than ever in the Windy City, serving up an intimate ambiance, limited entry, live music and craft cocktails—all with a side of history. Here are some of our favorite spots…that is, if you can find them!

The Violet Hour 1520 N. Damen Ave. 773-252-1500 theviolethour.com This James Beard Award–winning artisanal lounge in Wicker Park offers a seasonally rotating cocktail menu, along with an extensive selection of sought-after spirits. Clever cocktails include Flat Tire on Memory Lane, Gimme All Your Lovin’, and May You Rest in Peace. The small menu contains such bar necessities as fried pickle chips, stuffed dates, meatballs and lemon ricotta doughnuts. While its façade features an ever-changing mural with a single light bulb above the door, you’ll know you’re in the right place once you see the line of people waiting outside. There’s no such thing as standing room here—once the seats are filled, you’ll have to wait your turn. Beware of the many house rules, including no cell phones, no reservations, no baseball hats and no Budweiser. Sounds like the perfect evening.

Milk Room 12 S. Michigan Ave. 2nd Floor 312-792-3515 lsdatcaa.com Don’t expect to bring the entire gang to the exclusive Milk Room. This micro bar, located on the second floor of the historic Chicago Athletic Association, features just eight seats and only accepts reservations for two for a two-hour time frame, along with a $50 deposit in advance. One story is that the room itself was part of the men’s club in the 1920s where you went to get your liquor in an opaque milk glass—hence, the name the Milk Room. But once you’ve gained entry to this one-of-a-kind speakeasy, you’ll be treated to a night of unique cocktails that incorporate extremely rare vintage spirits and hard-to-find ingredients, all created by beverage director Paul McGee, along with an impressive selection of well-curated whiskeys. The menu, which is more like a book, includes a Pernod 45 Absinthe from the 1930s, creations made from a Four Roses private barrel, and a $900 Old Overholt Rye pour from 1909. They also offer a limited menu of shared plates. There’s a little bit of history everywhere you turn in this dark and intimate saloon. While not inexpensive, a night at the Milk Room is a must for those who love their spirits.

Green Mill 4802 N Broadway St. 773-878-5552 greenmilljazz.com Perhaps Chicago’s speakeasy with the strongest ties to the mob during Prohibition, the Green Mill was co-owned by “Machine Gun” Jack McGurn, one of Al Capone’s top mobsters in the 1920s. Capone’s favorite booth—still there today—was located directly west of the short end of the bar so that he and his men would have clear views of both the front and back entrances. It’s even rumored to have an access hatch that leads to tunnels across the street, which is how Capone was able to elude the authorities. Today, Green Mill is better known for its live jazz performances every night of the week with smoky sounds from the ’30s and ’40s and a green neon sign hanging out front. Such premier musicians as John Bany and Alfonso Ponticelli have performed here right alongside late-night jam sessions by Uptown locals. Open until 4 a.m., it’s a legendary venue, full of history and sound. If only its walls could talk.

JOHN HARDY BALI IS CALLING YOU

Hand-wrought on the island of Bali, the dramatic jewelry of John Hardy is an everyday essential. When he traveled to Bali in 1975, Canadian designer John Hardy became enchanted by the country’s culture, people and artistry. Adopting Bali as his home, Hardy began working with local artisans to create handmade jewelry intricately wrought and hand-woven in silver and gold, adorned with diamonds and precious gems. Today, John Hardy’s timeless designs, still hand created by artisans in Bali in an open-air compound, are recognized for their meticulous craftsmanship, organic style and casual, everyday elegance. Humanitarian and environmental commitment—two sides of the same coin—are important aspects of the John Hardy brand. The company supports artisans (individuals and entire families) with its “Jobs for Life” program, ensuring that the jewelry making traditions of Bali are passed on through the generations, and that apprentices will progress in their expertise and eventually become master artisans. In addition, the brand is dedicated to sustainable luxury business practices. John Hardy strives to use 100% reclaimed silver and gold. All diamonds and other gemstones are ethically sourced. These are commitments that resonate with us here at Razny Jewelers. We offer dramatic and everyday-wearable pieces from the various John Hardy collections: Hand-woven precious metal is the trademark of the iconic Classic Chain Collection, which is representative of community and human bond. The Bamboo Collection gives back through the planting of bamboo seedlings with each purchase, celebrating Hardy’s respect for the earth. The Heritage Collection presents time-honored designs with a modern flair. The Legends Collection, depicting tigers, cobras and mythical water dragons, is inspired by Balinese myths, spirits and creative life forces.

LIKA BEHAR THERE’S A LOT TO LIKE ABOUT LIKA The Turkey native’s intricate designs put a modern twist on ancient history.

Jewelry designer Lika Behar works with hammered 24-karat gold, oxidized sterling silver, diamonds and gemstones—the same materials that have created the most luxurious jewelry in Turkey for centuries. But that’s no coincidence—Behar, now a New York City resident, was born and raised in Istanbul and still works from her studio there, finding inspiration for her pieces from her country’s rich ancient history.

Her hand-wrought rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants and necklaces, which employ the same techniques once used by ancient artisans, still reflect today’s modern, feminine spirit. Brilliant gemstones pay homage to the varying hues of Turkey’s deep blue waters. Turquoise, topaz, lapis, emeralds and labradorite are paired with the rich luxury of pure 24-karat gold. Mixed metals look perfectly mismatched against stones of various colors and textures (or on their own). Put simply, Behar’s jewelry is modern and luxurious, inspired by one of the great romantic destinations of the world.

WILLOW DIAMONDS

DIAMONDS THAT FLOAT

Jacqueline Earle is redefining the creative artistry of diamond jewelry.

It took laser technology and a vision to free the stones from their traditional settings, creating a whole new look in diamond jewelry. The visionary is Jacquie Earle, a veteran designer with more than 25 years of experience. She had observed that the metal prongs or channels used to mount a diamond have a drawback: They occlude some of the stone’s fire and brilliance. In addition, traditional mountings obscure part of the diamond, sometimes making it look smaller than it actually is. Her thought was to laser pierce the stones, enabling them to be joined with ultra-thin, proprietary rings of platinum or gold. The effect is that the diamond appears to float free. Not only does each stone catch more light when suspended this way; the diamond is free to move on its wire mount, which makes it sparkle even more. The look, as shown here, is flirty and modern. She calls her firm Willow Diamonds, a name that embodies freedom of movement. Her creations use pierced diamonds in a variety of fancy shapes—pear, marquise, princess—as well as rounds, and the quality is evident. Jacquie designs and produces all her jewelry in the U.S. “We alloy our own gold responsibly,” she says proudly. “Our quality, both in materials and craftsmanship, is simply uncompromising.” The “Add-A-Diamond” program allows Willow Diamonds wearers to add or exchange diamonds over time. “Life changes,” says Jacquie, “and so should your jewelry. Let’s all get creative together!” At Razny Jewelers, we see things the same way, which is why we’re among the first stores in America to offer Willow Diamonds.

SHY CREATION

DON’T BE SHY!

This L.A.-based design house prides itself on trend-driven fine jewelry for the next generation. Who says millennials don’t buy diamonds? Shy Dayan is changing the notion that 20- and 30-somethings have no need for special occasion sparklers. His fine jewelry designs excite and engage the young, modern woman who wants her accessories to reflect her personal style—whether she’s in streetwear or formalwear. Using only the finest metals, gemstones, diamonds and semiprecious stones, Shy, founder and chief designer of Shy Creation, fashions pieces that are all about wearability; items can be layered or make a statement on their own, and are versatile enough for a black-tie affair, a casual dinner party or a weekend getaway. Shy was inspired to become a jewelry designer while working a summer job for a jewelry manufacturer when he was just 16. He started by selling simple gold studs and then men’s bracelets, and eventually began to study and experiment with diamonds, creating his first engagement ring more than 25 years ago. This inspiration turned into a lifelong passion, career and business, which he now runs out of Los Angeles with the help of his brother David, who serves as president, and sister Kathy, the creative director and muse; Shy’s popular Kate collection, which consists of youthful and fashionable pieces for easy, everyday luxury, is named for his sister. This family business has since evolved into an award-winning luxury brand that prides itself on its cool girl items with California edge: diamond chandelier earrings and ornate lariats perfect for milestone events sit among everyday bangles, delicate gold layered necklaces and pavé diamond rings. These fresh, modern pieces appeal to women of all ages and backgrounds, which is why we’re excited to offer them at Razny Jewelers.

MASRIERA ART NOUVEAU MASTERPIECES These Barcelona beauties are artisan jewelry that tell a story. Uniquely recognizable with its enameled floral, serpentine elements often depicting women, nature or religious motifs, a piece of jewelry from Masriera is truly one of a kind. Founded in 1839 by the Masriera family, famous in Spain for their artistic prowess, the name Masriera is synonymous with Art Nouveau. Today, the Masriera brand continues to offer its signature enamel and 18- and 24-karat gold with flourishes of femininity. Its collections are ethereal and its look is distinctive. You can likely visualize its thematic elements with collections dubbed floral, fauna, and nymphs.

Each piece is a one-of-a-kind enameled work of art. In its quest for perfection, Masriera crafts each piece of jewelry with the original molds the founding family used in the 1800s. All materials and stones are chosen individually for each specific piece, and expert artisans employ the same techniques today that have made them famous for generations. The result is the creation of one-of-a-kind enameled works of art. The European favorite based in Barcelona has been hard to come by in the United States, but is now available in the Midwest exclusively at Razny Jewelers.

SLOANE STREET FROM MOTHER & DAUGHTER WITH LOVE

Both timeless and modern, these pieces are the true embodiment of mother-daughter collaboration.

Strié texturing adds rich beauty to this gold jewelry, and because it’s painstakingly finished by hand, each piece is unique.

The mother-daughter duo of Frances and Charlotte Gadbois have mixed their love of color and timeless elegance to create a fresh new luxury jewelry line called Sloane Street, unique for its one-of-a-kind stones and signature gold texturing. Frances and Charlotte—or the Sloane Rangers, as they call themselves—travel the world in search of rare stones to be the centerpieces for their 18-karat-gold collections. The Classic Collection, pictured here, is the true embodiment of motherdaughter collaboration. “I have always loved gold and diamonds, and my mom was the one who was passionate about color,” Charlotte says. “Since our partnership, she has gotten back to her roots of classic and timeless gold pieces, and has embraced my millennial influences to create a beautiful marriage of timeless and modern.”

Bracelet, earrings and rings in 18K yellow and white gold with diamond accents

Their unique strié texturing is used throughout the collection. “It’s the DNA of our brand and will continue to be something that stands us apart from the rest,” adds Charlotte. Just like the painting technique on walls where a comb is run through wet paint to create a grooved look, this strié technique is created by hand on each jewelry piece. “We build the texture in CAD, it is cast in the mold, and then each line is hand-finished by our master jeweler,” Charlotte explains. “The process is incredibly laborintensive, and for some of our larger bracelets, the piece takes up to two days to finish.” The result is a rich and beautiful look, with no piece ever the same.

Diamond and gold strié guards are an exciting addition to the Classic Collection. “They are bookends, so you can really put any ring in between,” says Charlotte. She suggests anything from a diamond eternity band to colored bands. “We have onyx, aqua chalcedony and hematite-carved bands that look really cool in between the guards—and any of our right-hand cocktail rings also work.” Frances and Charlotte’s goal is to create staples that you will have for years to come—jewelry that stands on its own and also layers well with other designers. Says Charlotte, “These pieces are meant to be passed down.”

PATEK PHILIPPE’S

WATCHWORDS OF GREATNESS

As an independent, family-owned business with a nearly 180-year history, Patek Philippe lives by a set of enduring core values. Luxury watch enthusiasts around the world agree: There’s only one Patek Philippe, the family-owned Swiss watch brand considered by many to be the most prestigious watchmaker in the world. True to the quest for perfection that has marked the company since it was founded in 1839, Patek Philippe creates heirloom-quality timepieces in a way that reflects and honors the timeless values and aspirations of its discerning customers. Its mission statement—“Lasting value is both material and emotional”—was clearly the inspiration for its iconic 22-year-old advertising tagline: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” While many luxury brands subscribe to lofty corporate ideals, few live them like Patek Philippe. Consider its core principles:

As the only independent, family-owned Genevan timepiece manufacturer that develops and crafts everything in-house, the company has total creative freedom.

1. Independence—Patek Philippe is the oldest independent, family-owned Genevan timepiece manufacturer that develops and crafts its watches and movements in-house. This means that the company has total creative freedom. 2. Tradition—As a steward of Geneva’s great watchmaking tradition, Patek Philippe is devoted to employing artisanal techniques alongside the latest technological developments. 3. Innovation—The company constantly tests the frontiers of watchmaking artistry through avantgarde achievements at technology’s cutting edge. 4. Quality and fine workmanship—These are the watchwords at Patek Philippe, which serve the goal of developing and manufacturing the finest timepieces in the world. 5. Rarity—Always conceived as exclusive creations, Patek Philippe timepieces are crafted in small series ranging from just a dozen to several hundred watches, each fitted with proprietary movements, making them highly appreciated and coveted by luxury watch enthusiasts. continued... 6. Value—Each Patek Philippe timepiece embodies centuries of knowledge and countless hours of work. It’s an asset that will retain and increase its value over time. Owners consider it an irreplaceable family heirloom. 7. Aesthetics—The company’s designs have an understated timeless style that outlives passing trends. 8. Service—Patek Philippe provides the highest standard of after-sales service and works only with a small network of hand-picked dealers to ensure that your timepiece receives the care and attention needed to function reliably for generations. 9. Emotion—A Patek Philippe timepiece is a very personal possession steeped in memories. Its purchase is often related to an important event: a professional success, a marriage, the birth of a child. Owners often associate their timepiece with passion and affection. 10. Heritage—To acquire a Patek Philippe is to become the custodian of a family-owned treasure that will be handed down from generation to generation. Each timepiece will create its own unique heritage and legacy. In a recent interview, Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern spoke about the lessons he learned from his father: “One of the best pieces of advice [my father] ever gave me was not to rush, to always think about the product first, to take the time to excel and be creative, and to offer the one thing our customers really want that may not exist in our line.” Larry Pettinelli, president of Patek Philippe U.S. and a 30-year veteran of the company, remains in awe of the family’s values. “The Stern family is most impressive because they are constantly thinking 20 years into the future—it’s never a short-term focus,” he says. “An example of this is the extraordinary production structure they’re building in Geneva: They’re re-investing to secure the future of the next generation of Patek owners. This company has a strong sense of commitment to the art of Swiss watchmaking, and will continue to ensure the highest level of quality, value and innovation in the industry.” Such is the beauty of a familyowned business that can set its own priorities. That’s Patek Philippe.

Above left, the Patek Philippe production facility in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, sits on the left bank of the Rhone, a few miles from the city center. Company workshops scattered around Geneva were unified on this campus in 1996. ROLEX WATCHES BORN OF AND FOR THE SEA On October 7, 1927, at just past six in the evening, Mercedes Gleitze became the first Englishwoman to swim the English Channel. Two weeks later, after a hoax claim had unfairly brought the legitimacy of her feat under scrutiny, she would attempt the swim again, this time wearing a little jewelry. When Rolex cofounder Hans Wildorf heard about what was being called the “Vindication Swim,” he sent Ms. Gleitze a letter offering to gift her one of his newly patented waterproof wristwatches—the Oyster—if she would wear it during her swim across the Channel. She agreed. Though the falling temperatures of the October water (51 degrees at times) would cause her to abandon the attempt just seven miles from the French coast after enduring almost 10½ hours of swimming, the little gold Rolex tied around her neck was still keeping perfect time. And so began Rolex’s ineffable relationship with the sea.

Above, left to right: The original Rolex Oyster, introduced in 1926, was worn by Mercedes Gleitze during her famous “Vindication Swim” of the English Channel. Its legacy, the Submariner, shown here with a black dial and bezel, is arguably the world’s most famous diver’s watch. The Sea-Dweller Deepsea, rated for a depth of 12,800 feet, was the watch worn by James Cameron during his descent to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Opposite page, pictured in its natural environment, this Sea-Dweller features a date display and the trademark Cyclops lens.

As swimmers of the 1920s evolved into the divers of the 1940s and 50s, Rolex dove deeper into the technologies that would allow its watches to go with them. In 1953, the company launched the Submariner, the first diver’s watch to be waterproof to 330 feet. It came in steel and had no date function, but featured a rotating bezel that allowed divers to track their immersion times. Over the years, the Submariner collection has expanded to include yellow gold as well as Oystersteel and yellow gold models, and date complications. Current models are now rated to a depth of 1,000 feet. One of the most popular watches in the world, the Submariner was favored by diver Jacques Cousteau and worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in the 007 movies.

hyperbaric chambers, the helium from the gas mixtures used could be released without risking damage to the watch. Initially, the Sea-Dweller could withstand a depth of 2,000 feet. Always striving for excellence, 10 years later Rolex released the SeaDweller 4000, which as its name suggests, is waterproof to a depth of 4,000 feet. Today’s Sea-Dwellers are made in Oystersteel, a form of superalloy most commonly used in aerospace and chemical industries where corrosion resistance is essential. The SeaDweller’s large hands and indices, along with its black dial, are designed for maximum readability, and its Chromalight display will glow blue for up to eight hours, a must in dark environments.

On March 26, 2012, Academy-Award winning director James Cameron took an experimental model of the Deepsea on the first-ever solo dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the earth’s seabed, at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. After spending seven hours almost seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the Rolex Deepsea was still keeping perfect time, just as the original Oyster did when Mercedes Gleitze made her pioneering swim of the English Channel in 1927.

In 1967, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller. To meet the needs of professional deep-sea divers, the case was equipped with a helium escape valve so that, during long decompression phases in

In 2008, Rolex introduced a version of the Sea-Dweller called Deepsea, which can withstand depths of up to 12,800 feet, more than 100 times beyond the depth any human could survive. Its case design features the

Any perfectionist could say that Rolex long ago perfected the diver’s watch. Never content to rest on its laurels, however, Rolex has pushed for ever-greater technical achievements, making it the clear leader in underwater timekeeping.

LOOKING HIS BEST

As the temperature dips, these are the hot looks in menswear. Men’s fashion that debuts on runways in Florence, Milan, London, Paris and New York quickly makes its way into favorite shops in Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and Oak Street shopping districts. The key to bringing the latest looks into your everyday wardrobe is to invest in a few items at a time, and not to combine too many styles into one outfit. Here’s what’s trending this fall and winter: LOTS OF LEATHER From motorcycle jackets and bombers to leather pants and even half-zip pullovers, leather is a material of choice this season. It’s also a tried-and-true classic. If you don’t already have a leather jacket or coat hanging in your closet, now’s the time to invest in a style that suits your personality. BROWN IN TOWN There was a time when brown was not considered correct for business wear.

34

Now it’s a staple. Milk chocolate is the shade of choice—the new neutral. From jackets and overcoats to suits (including tuxedos), sweaters and shoes, this hip shade is showing up everywhere. VINTAGE CHECKS You’ll have your pick, from large Buffalo plaids and tweedy checks to oversized tartans. Designers are aggressively layering competing checks over one another, with each pattern louder than the next. While this clashing look most

likely won’t make its way into your home, it should give you confidence when picking out your own favorite plaid. TURTLENECKS WITH SUITS Casual enough for dinner out, yet elegant enough to replace a tie, the stylish turtleneck paired with a suit is back, big-time. Choose a dark-colored, thin cashmere or merino wool sweater that’s not too bulky. As you become confident with the look, consider branching out to bolder colors.

ESCAPE TO PORTUGAL

With its vibrant cities, medieval history, beautiful architecture, fabulous food and some of the most exquisite beaches in all of Europe, Portugal is the place to go. PORTUGAL, ONE OF EUROPE’S FINEST GEMS, has become a hot destination— and not just because of its year-round mild climate. The country’s welcoming people, nine centuries of history, fabulous food and wine, gorgeous architecture and natural sights all add up to a vacation that offers something for everyone. It’s no wonder that Portugal tops many bucket lists.

Since this vibrant country is relatively small—about the size of Indiana— you’re able to explore a lot in one trip. It’s also a mecca for foodies. Boasting the largest exclusive fishing zone in Europe, seafood is fresh, plentiful, and affordable. Local cuisine is vegetarian-friendly as well, offering hearty soups, stews, and locally grown fruits and vegetables. Here are some of our favorite spots in Portugal…. Rabelo boats on the Duoro River in the coastal city of Porto, famous for its port wine and lively Ribeira district, made up of medieval streets, colorful ancient houses and dozens of cafés and restaurants. The iconic Dom Luís I Bridge is in the background.

LISBON The elegant coastal city of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is home to white domed cathedrals, brightly tiled buildings, and some of the country’s most famous sights, including a Gothic monument from the 1500s guarding the entrance to the very harbor from which Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Columbus all embarked. Other can’t-miss destinations include the historic neighborhood of Alfama, which dates back to the Moors, with its narrow cobblestone streets and indescribable charm; Aguas Livres Aqueduct, a majestic eighteenth-century example of Portuguese engineering; St. George’s Castle, with phenomenal views of the city; and the Monastery of St. Jerome, with its highly ornate architecture. Lisbon also proudly boasts a wealth of excellent museums, including the world-renowned Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Tile Museum. Sightsee via the iconic yellow trams that traverse the hilly streets of the city, and indulge in pastel de nata, the infamous Portuguese custard tart. It’s a remarkable city that will entrance you with its sights, sounds and flavors. SINTRA Located about 20 miles northwest of Lisbon is the picturesque, hilly resort town of Sintra, dotted with pastel-colored villas, historical palaces and ancient mansions. This fairytale-like city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a must-see, full of lush vegetation and cobblestone streets. continued... RAZNY

PORTO Even farther up the coast in northwest Portugal is the magical city of Porto. The region is famed for the production of port wine, which is still stored and matured in cellars that stretch along the banks of the Douro River. Here, it’s all about having fun in the charming Ribeira District, another UNESCO World Heritage site, where cafés, bars, and restaurants line the colorful cobblestone streets. Stroll across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, go for a wine tour or tasting at Vila Nova de Gaia, and discover incredible gilt carvings at the Church of St. Francis, which dates back to 1245. Harry Potter fans won’t want to miss the Livraria Lello, a bookshop with stunning architecture that served as the inspiration for Hogwart’s—J.K. Rowling was actually a customer here when she was teaching English in Porto in the 1990s. ALGARVE REGION For Portugal’s most celebrated beaches—adorned with golden sand, crystal-clear water, rock cliffs, and mystical caves—travel to the southernmost region called the Algarve. While still relatively unspoiled, here’s where you’ll find luxury oceanfront hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, chic spas, thermal baths and internationally acclaimed golf resorts. With more than 150 beaches to choose from, it’s the perfect place to unwind after days of touring up north.

JEWELRY TRENDS

ULTRA SPECIAL

Pantone’s color of the year dazzles and shines. Ultra Violet—the Pantone color of the year for 2018—is a deep, provocative shade that communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking. Pantone, known for its custom color-matching system, picked the shade in tribute to “the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” This inspirational color can easily be worked into your jewelry wardrobe, from rings and earrings to bracelets and necklaces. Gems in varying degrees of purple set alongside diamonds, pearls, rubies and pink sapphires are vibrant and mystical—and the perfect way to give your outfits an updated look. Here, we feature violet pieces from Sloane Street. “This year’s Pantone color made us get creative and want to experiment with various purples within our collection,” says Charlotte Gadbois, the younger co-creator of the motherdaughter duo behind this luxury jewelry brand. “My mom and I love lavender, which is a beautiful shade on many different skin tones,” notes Charlotte. They were intrigued by ametrine, a stone that blends amethyst and citrine, and used it in this spectacular, almost-eight-carat ring. “The purple halo creates a deeper color with the black rhodium prongs, and it sets off the richness of the gold and the yellow of the citrine,” she adds. The lavender jade earrings and pendant are classic with a modern twist. “The lavender jade in these pieces is more intense than what you typically see,” says Charlotte, “and these are really spectacular, hand-cut specimens.”

White diamonds may be known as a girl’s best friend, but colored gemstones are a diamond’s perfect companion. As every woman knows, colored gems have a big impact, lighting up any occasion with their distinctive brilliance. Consider the Big Three classics—blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies—as well as colored diamonds and the many other colored stones available at Razny Jewelers. Sapphires alone occur naturally in almost every color of the rainbow (did you know that a ruby is technically a form of sapphire?). These treasures from Mother Nature are made even more precious when crafted into unique works of art by Razny Jewelers. Give them to commemorate a special birthday or anniversary—or better yet, just because she’s the love of your life—and watch her face light up with joy. That same emotion and warm memories will come back every time she wears her colored gemstone creations. All jewelry pictured here is from Razny Jewelers Custom Collection unless otherwise noted.

SAFEKEEPING BUBEN&ZORWEG creates watch safes as intriguing as the treasures they contain. It used to be that home safes were plain strongboxes set into a wall and perhaps hidden behind a painting. German firm Buben & Zorweg, which specializes in watch safes, had the genius to transform the lowly strongbox into luxury furniture meant to be seen and admired. Using high design, luxury materials and James Bond-like gadgetry, the company creates cases for timepieces that are every bit as artful and eye-catching as the treasures they contain. The timepiece storage systems of Buben & Zorweg, whose headquarters and sales operations are based in Austria, range from desktop models to watch-winding wardrobes that stand five feet tall. All offer a spectacular blend of functionality and style. They incorporate materials such as Nappa leather, exotic woods, carbon fiber, high-sheen lacquer and even bulletproof, two-way mirrored glass (at the touch of a button on a remote control, the half-inch-thick glass goes from mirrored to transparent, revealing the timepieces inside). Many of today’s watch safes contain automatic watch-winders, which keep an entire collection ready to wear. Buben & Zorweg’s creations do that and more. As furniture and conversation pieces, many of the models incorporate additional functions, such as a humidor, bar, weather station or music system. What better way to display an impressive timepiece collection than in a secure piece of furniture so beautiful and intriguing it can become the focal point of a room? Exclusive to only 13 retailers in the U.S., Buben & Zorweg is now available at Razny Jewelers. Whether you’re looking to house several watches or 100 in ultimate style, if you subscribe to the famous quote by Oscar Wilde, “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best,” then you will be drawn to Buben & Zorweg.

PORSCHE DOES IT AGAIN

With a stick in its bag of tricks, Porsche’s latest iteration of the iconic 911 is a true driver’s car. By Luca Sumberac

been

Stupefying. Scintillating. Ingenious. Insane. When adjectives like these are lavished on the 991.2 GT3, Porsche’s newest high-performance iteration of its inimitable 911, nobody bats an eyelash. After all, it’s a Porsche. The GT3 has been called “the definition of a gentleman’s racer.” Its 4.0-liter, six-cylinder, horizontally opposed and naturally aspirated engine offers 500 hp, 339 lb-ft of torque and a high-revving design that can hit up to 9,000 RPM. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and boasts a redesigned front end with large openings and new air blades on each side to improve cooling. You’ll be grateful for the added ventilation because this car begs to be pushed to the limits. The GT3’s rear spoiler is also higher than previous generations and is located farther back to be more effective. The added down-force of that massive spoiler helps to keep the car planted, and the increased stability comes in handy when testing out that 9,000 RPM rev limit. The GT3’s racing chassis sports dynamic engine mounts and rear-axle steering for superb turns, along with GT tuning plus a high-performance brake system with six-piston aluminum brake calipers at the front and four-piston equivalents in the rear. With its outstanding braking and aero stability, courtesy of that massive wing, you’ll be able to charge corners with supreme confidence. Of course, high-hp cars can be relegated to paperweight status if a driver can’t effectively control them—but not this baby. This is a true driver’s car. The 911 GT3 comes standard with Porsche’s performance-oriented automatic seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox—Porsche-speak for the advanced double-clutch automatic transmission. The PDK is, without a doubt, a superior way to shift gears, but die-hard Porsche enthusiasts have been clamoring for a traditional manual gearbox in the GT3, and Porsche has obviously heard those cries. That’s right—the six-speed GT sports manual transmission is now an option (at no extra charge). Don’t get me wrong; the PDK is fast—it tops out at 197 mph. The dual clutch automatically shifts with little to no power loss, which translates into more speed and offers up to 14 percent better fuel economy than the manual version. But to a true motorsports fan, all that efficiency pales against the chance to use the increasingly endangered third pedal, especially on a GT3. continued... RAZNY

For me, it’s worth sacrificing a quicker 0–60 time for the ear-to-ear smile that comes with pushing a shift knob through the gears. Starting at $143,600, the GT3 comes standard in white, black, Guards Red or Racing Yellow. For a little extra you can choose one of four metallics. Or go ahead and splurge for the exotic Miami Blue, Carmine Red, Chalk or Lava Orange. If these colors don’t grab you, ask if paint-to-sample customization is available. While the color options are great, it’s not the paint job that matters in the long run, is it? This vehicle’s true appeal lies behind the wheel. And as this enthusiast car finds the owners whose hearts clamor for it—knowingly or not—we’re sure to hear more adjectives.

PATEK PHILIPPE: PERPETUALLY IN DEMAND Timepieces with perpetual calendars are among the watchmakers most coveted achievements.

This ultra-thin ladies’ perpetual calendar timepiece, Ref. 7140R, is enhanced by a bezel set with 68 diamonds.

Ref. 5327, a particular favorite among purists

Watch connoisseurs have long gravitated toward timepieces by Patek Philippe. Known for its spirit of innovation and technical expertise, Patek Philippe continues each year to introduce a range of magnificent timepieces, many of which involve complications, the supreme test of watchmaking skill. Certain models ultimately become cult objects among aficionados, resulting in long waiting lists for the most coveted references. Among their most revered complications are perpetual calendars. In modern watchmaking, a perpetual calendar indicates the exact date, correcting automatically for months with fewer than 31 days, as well as leap years. A watch with a perpetual calendar will need manual adjusting in the years 2100, 2200 and 2300, but not in 2400. (This is because a year that begins a century is a leap year only if divisible by 400.) Needless to say, the perpetual calendar is driven by a highly sophisticated mechanism—a complex system of levers and cams

pivoting around their axes. Patek continues to leverage its longstanding competence in this arena. Timepieces with perpetual calendars are typically elegant and dressy; the Patek Philippe models shown here are among the most sought-after watches in the world. Reference 5327—Featuring the iconic movement Patek has been using for 35+ years, this beautiful watch offers an ultra-thin self-winding caliber that’s a favorite among purists. And the larger 39mm case makes the 5327 exciting, as it perfectly showcases Patek’s exceptional polishing skills, accentuating the case shape and each distinct component. Reference 5940—A beloved classic now available in a new metal, this watch still creates a stir. The Ref. 5940 was unveiled back in 2012 in yellow gold, offering Patek fans the option of an additional case shape with Patek’s most traditional complication, the perpetual calendar.

Ref. 5159, a technical and aesthetic triumph

More recently, this beautiful Art Deco-style perpetual became available in white gold. Reference 5140—The Ref. 5140 is Patek’s archetypal perpetual calendar. It’s the follow-up to the iconic Ref. 3940, considered one of the most important pieces in Patek’s modern history; in fact, some experts call Ref. 3940 the world’s first truly complicated timepiece. Ref. 5140 uses the same ultra-thin, self-winding, micro rotorpowered caliber as its predecessor and is available in white gold, yellow gold or rose gold with brown dial, and platinum with a blue dial. Reference 5496—This gorgeous watch with perpetual calendar, gold applied hour markers and retrograde date hand is all about subtle contrasts: The silvery dial with vertical satin finish highlights the hands, center-sweep second hand and hour markers. This watch is sought after for its elegance and superb legibility.

Ref. 7140, with diamond bezel and minute pearls

Reference 5159—A special watch with retrograde date hand, sweep seconds hand and moon phases, Ref. 5159 also features a white opaline dial with guilloché detailing and black roman numerals. It is a true work of art, both technically and aesthetically. Reference 7140—This magnificent ultra-thin ladies’ perpetual calendar watch features a bezel set with 68 diamonds, deflecting light on a silvery sunburst dial with applied gold numerals and minute pearls. Consider it as a special gift, or to reward yourself just for being you! The ability of a timepiece to mark the flow of time—the uneven months and years—without manual adjustment is a mechanical marvel. In the perpetual calendars of Patek Philippe, this impressive complication is united with supreme aesthetic artistry. These timepieces are the perfect companions to mark the flow of one’s life.

ROLEX:

REWARDING EXCELLENCE Encouraging rising artists, scientists and scholars is a special part of Rolex’s humanitarian commitment.

Many companies are citing corporate social responsibility as a new part of their 21st century value system. For Rolex, that commitment is nothing new. The company has long supported the development of rising artists, scientists and scholars with programs like the Rolex Awards for Enterprise and the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Program. Founded in 1976 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Oyster, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise honors exceptional individuals in their dedication to improve life on Earth. An example is Vreni Haüssermann, a marine biologist and recent Rolex Laureate who has spent two decades studying the ecology of Patagonia’s remotest fjords. With support from Rolex, the scubadiving Haüssermann is using a submarine robot to document and film unexplored marine life to a depth of 500 meters. Her findings are creating a baseline for marine conservation efforts.

The Rolex Mentor & Protégé Program is designed to help rising artists in film, architecture, music, dance, literature, theater and visual arts achieve their full potential by pairing them with great masters for a year of collaboration. The young composer Pauchi Sasaki, for example, was mentored by the renowned Philip Glass. Many protégés have gone on to create tremendous work, and some have come back to the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Program as mentors, themselves. While Rolex is world renowned for its excellence in watchmaking, programs like these show that the true beating heart of Rolex is and has always been its humanitarian commitment.

Pictured opposite and above left is Vreni Haüssermann, a marine biologist and Rolex Laureate who has spent two decades studying the ecology of Patgonia’s remotest fjords. The Rolex Mentor & Protégé Program helps rising artists by pairing them with great masters. Above right, Pauchi Sasaki attended performances of her mentor Philip Glass’s works.

Another Rolex Laureate dedicated to marine conservation is biologist Kerstin Forsberg. Based in Lima, Peru, Forsberg is a champion of the giant manta ray, a majestic creature that glides through the sea on wings seven meters wide. Slow to reproduce and classified as vulnerable, giant mantas are taken up for fish meat by fishermen in Peru, putting further pressure on the species. Through her organization, Planeta Océano, Forsberg is working to change perceptions of mantas, both in terms of their ecological importance and their potential value as a tourist attraction. The Rolex Award, she says, “will help us to take this project up to the next scale, nationally and internationally.”

THE NEW BUZZ

FROM BREITLING With the debut of the Navitimer 8, Breitling is increasingly a brand to watch.

“If there was to be one guy I would hire today as a testimonial for the brand, it would be Steve McQueen. This is the coolest guy ever,” said Georges Kern, the new CEO of Breitling in February of this year as he unveiled the company’s first collection under his leadership, the Navitimer 8, and outlined some of his plans for the company’s future. The Navitimer 8 collection consists of five models—the B01, the Unitime, the Chronograph, the Day & Date and the Automatic. Designed to honor Breitling’s well-known aviation

heritage, the collection also reflects some of the brand’s new values, including greater readability. “Everything [from here forward] will be clearly segmented, structured, simplified, reduced to become readable and understandable,” said Kern. To this end, the Navitimer 8 lacks a slide rule, a defining characteristic of its predecessors. Breitling fans and collectors alike have lauded this omission as well as Mr. Kern’s commitment “to bridge the current Breitling community… the vintage community and the new Breitling customer.” Breitling’s overall product plan will expand its offerings across three functional markets—air, sea and land—and will be comprised of four lines: the Navitimer as the umbrella name for all pilot’s watches; the Superocean for all diver’s watches; and the Premier and the Chronomat for land/ all-purpose watches. The company also plans to produce a collection of smaller watches specifically designed for its under-considered female clients. According to Mr. Kern, this is being accompanied by an appropriate shift in the company’s advertising campaigns. As he put it, “Blond girls and Betty on the Bomb—I mean, I’m sorry—the world has changed and we need to adjust.”

quality, performance, elegance and modernity,” said Georges Kern. Though Steve McQueen is obviously unavailable, Mr. Kern has assembled an impressive list of brand ambassadors, some to honor Breitling’s roots, such as astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly, and some in consideration of the future he’s building, such as Motocross star Darren Criss and actress Olivia Munn. The new Navitimer 8 collection is the first step toward a future that increasingly makes Breitling a brand to watch.

Clockwise from top left, the classic Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph 46 in steel with Aurora Blue dial; the Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 in steel and rose gold, with an Ocean Classic steel bracelet; the Navitimer 8 B01 Chronograph 43 with blue dial and brown alligator leather strap. Opposite, the seven aircraft of the Breitling Jet Team perform a perfectly synchronized display.

To this end, partnerships have been announced with Norton Motorcycles, the British Racing Bike manufacturer, and Ocean Conservancy, the nonprofit company dedicated to cleaning Earth’s oceans, as Mr. Kern looks to solidify the company’s presence in the racing and diving sectors as well expand its core values to include corporate social responsibility. “We want to be an authentic brand for men and women of style, purpose and action, with heritage, RAZNY

JEWELRY TRENDS Diamond bar necklaces available in 18K rose, yellow or white gold by EF Collection

THE NEW MANTRA:

MORE IS MORE Traditional rules of wearing jewelry have faded away, paving the way for fun layering that creates artistic, breathtaking looks. Move aside, single statement pieces. The mantra “less is more” is no longer applicable when it comes to your jewelry box. More is actually now more— and by this, we’re talking about the number of pieces you can wear at one time and the mixing of metals and textures. Traditional rules have been relaxed, paving the way for fun layering that creates artistic, breathtaking looks. Part of today’s layering trend is “deli couture”—short for delicate couture jewelry. Deli couture is about wearing several subtle, delicate pieces together to convey a cohesive design statement. Layered in varying lengths, the delicate necklace—times two, three, four or five—instantly becomes the centerpiece of your outfit. Choose the shortest necklace first, in a length that flatters your neckline; showcasing diamonds or a pendant at the nape of the neck will flatter your face. When adding longer necklaces, select varied chains and textures. A horizontal bar necklace is a great option because it will break up the vertical lines of the other pieces.

74

Deli couture layering works with bracelets too. Be sure to strike a balance between variety and cohesion. Stacking very similar bracelets can be boring, and by the same token, mixing wildly different styles can look chaotic. Go for subtle differences. An odd number of bracelets generally looks better than an even number. If you decide to mix metals, try to alternate metal colors in the stack. Rings? Of course! Try stacking petite bands in similar textures but different metal colors and stone shapes. Or, opt for near-identical rings set with white diamonds or colored stones, but with varying colors of gold. Don’t forget the pinky ring, popular in Parisian fashion and of growing importance to American style. Deli couture is a versatile trend allows you to enjoy a lot of jewelry every day. Wear it proudly, get creative and remember, when it comes to delicate pieces, more is more!

and wedding bands reflecting the everlasting brilliance of true love. It was essential to us that, aside from being distinctive, this exclusive collection encompasses the many styles and tastes of today’s brides. We took great care to guarantee modern silhouettes shine just as brilliantly as their classic counterparts. The most popular diamond shapes and settings, with a few outlier designs added for variety, were all skillfully formed by our in-house design team. It is a collection we are proud to call Forever by RaznySM.

MEET JACQUELINE, famous even now for her radiant sparkle. Inspired by the iconic style of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, this is a ring that guests of Razny Jewelers have consistently requested for years. Delicate yet remarkable, it is a silhouette never to be outdone. “Halo me, halo me not — that is the question. The halo setting has flown in and out throughout time, but it is now here to stay. We just love how it so gently cradles your beautiful diamond.”

SOLITAIRE MEET ELIZABETH, a beautiful engagement ring from the solitaire collection within Forever by Razny. First sketched with the traditional bride in mind, her time-honored beauty is instantly captivating. “Elizabeth, as the name suggests, is a style unfazed by time. Think of Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest-reigning monarch. Inspired by longevity, this ring will remain just as stunning on your 50th anniversary as it is the first day placed on your finger. Make her fancy, fun, or flirty with a gorgeous wedding band from our endless selection.”

FANCY MEET JULIET, the perfect combination of refinement and glamour. This three-stone ring, accented with pear-shaped diamonds set with unexpected elegance, is instantly unforgettable. “Our most romantic ring is the Juliet, of course inspired by the star-crossed lover of Shakespeare’s play. It is forever young, decorated with a single tear on both sides of the center stone; a symbol of love’s enduring devotion.”

MEET HOLLY, the perfect ring for a modern bride. With elongated baguettes and a center emerald, we have put a contemporary twist on a three-stone classic. Make it uniquely yours with a choice of metal and carat size.

Bonphotage

“Take a favored classic and make it modern — that was our challenge. What we sketched was the Holly; a ring Holly Golightly, one of Audrey Hepburn’s most memorable characters, would wear in a minute to any fête. Surrounded by the upper echelon of café society, there would still be no competition for its exceptionality.”

Why is superior craftsmanship so important to you? Our quality standards are the integrity of the brand. We work with the best diamonds, the most skilled artisans, the finest colored gemstones. And we’ve made a brand promise to our customers: We want women to feel confident in the brand and confident when expressing their personal style. Fine craftsmanship is the first step to making sure they always feel their best in LAGOS.

personal pieces of ar t.

How does the tagline “My LAGOS My Way” reflect your design philosophy? When I chose the tagline My LAGOS My Way, I was inspired by strong, smart, confident women with their own sense of style. Our customers are unique and rather than come up with one thing that everyone should be wearing, I like to express a lot of different ideas so she can select the looks that are right for her. My designs become personal pieces of art with new meaning and special stories attached to them. I design with that in mind. After more than 40 years of fine jewelry design, how has your creative process evolved? One of the things that we’ve been able to do as a brand is to take the Old World craftsmanship and enhance it with technology. I developed our signature Caviar beading more than 30 years ago, but we’re always improving it while at the same time retaining all of those fine jewelry values and techniques that are important for the tradition. Our Black Caviar collection was born from technology and it took three years to perfect the process. My vision of jewelry has changed over the years in many ways, but the fundamentals remain the same. It’s super personal. It’s meaningful. It’s treasured.
