PERFECT UNION INTERIOR DESIGN BY
Dwayne Thomas & Sheila Broderson for Safavieh PHOTOGRAPHY BY Peter Rymwid TEXT BY Daria Meoli
In the refurbished bridal and groom suites at a popular wedding venue, entourages can pre-party in style. Because wedding days are hectic enough without having to race from a place of worship to the reception venue, more and more weddings are taking place at a single site. A temporary place of worship is created in a garden, meadow or backyard, and the priest, minister, rabbi or other officiant—have license, will travel—is imported for the occasion. While it’s easy on the happy couple and their guests, the one-stop wedding places a special burden on the host facility: The bride and bridesmaids need a suite where they

At Brooklake Country Club, Safavieh refurbished the bride’s suite as a stylish haven where the bride and bridesmaids can pre-party and be pampered. Says designer Dwayne Thomas, “It’s the decorating equivalent of a glass of sparkling Champagne.” More wedding ceremonies are taking place at the club, usually overlooking the verdant golf course, pictured at left.

can get dressed, do hair and makeup and otherwise prepare for the big moment. And while the groom and groomsmen may have simpler requirements, they at least need a comfortable place to wait out of sight and deal with any last-minute jitters. Hosting weddings is a highly competitive business. Seeking an advantage, Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, New Jersey, commissioned Safavieh to refurbish its bridal and groom suites. Both projects were led by Dwayne Thomas and Sheila Broderson, designers at Safavieh’s Livingston, N.J., flagship store. Charged with infusing a “wow” factor, they created two very different spaces. “The bride’s suite is light and feminine with plenty of glamour, and roomy enough to move about in long gowns. I guess it’s the decorating equivalent of a glass of sparkling Champagne,” says Thomas. The groom’s suite, on the other hand, is tailored and masculine, with rich charcoal gray tones in wood and velvet. “I wanted it to feel like a sophisticated gentleman’s lounge,” says Thomas. “It’s a space where I’d like to relax with friends and a glass of Scotch.” You could say it’s the ideal atmosphere for the guys to toast the groom’s health in the waning hours of bachelorhood—or to take a nerve-calming, pre-ceremony nip. All of the furniture used in both suites is from Safavieh Couture collection. In design terms, says Thomas, “It enabled us to form a perfect union.”

INNOVATIONS
Brilliant new fabrics Thanks to polymer science and nanotechnology, the best spill-resistant fabrics also look and feel great.
The face-off shown above between two Airedale terriers, which may or may not be able to resist an ice-cream sundae, dramatizes the “internal struggles” that go on in most American homes. It’s just a matter of time before pets or kids or party guests spill something ghastly on the furniture. There is a way to spill-proof fine upholstered furniture: Opt for performance fabrics, which have improved hugely in recent years. “It used to be that they weren’t soft enough for indoor use,” says Sheila Broderson, Safavieh’s fabric buyer and a designer in the Livingston, New Jersey, flagship store. “But the new performance fabrics, such as those by Lee, are just as soft as regular fabrics.” What’s the science behind this? In the case of Perennials, a leading brand, the fabric is made of solution-dyed acrylic fiber. Fabric begins as a liquid polymer solution that is injected with pigment and then extruded, aligned, stretched, crimped and cut, resulting in fibers with the look and feel of natural cotton. The fibers are then spun and plied into yarns with any texture desired: chenille, bouclé, velvet and more. Using nanotechnology, the fabric is given a finish that’s more than a coating; it molecularly bonds to the fibers, providing long-lasting stain protection. Safavieh makes it easy to order literally thousands of styles of furniture in thousands of performance fabric options, so you can breathe easier in the company of bouncy pets and clumsy people.
36
Clockwise from above: A tufted back chair by Lee is covered in Crypton Drake Normandy. Perennials fabric has a NanoSeal finish, which resists liquids; the pillow, chair and rug in the inset feature this technology. Another chair by Lee is covered in Sahara Taupe, while the EJ Victor’s sofa is shown in a lighter shade of performance fabric.

A glance out the window suggests you’re in Paris, where limestone facades topped by mansard roofs lead the eye down a boulevard to the banks of the Seine. But this “city” is of recent vintage, built on the site of an old Chevrolet plant in Tarrytown, New York, and that river at the end of the street is the Hudson. Step inside one of these four-story townhouses, and you immediately understand the appeal of suburban townhome living, a trend that’s gaining momentum throughout the New York metro area. This unit is spacious and light-filled, packed with amenities and remarkably sound-proof. A private elevator makes the vertical layout easy to take. Not only are the river views fantastic, the train to Manhattan is a mere two-minute walk. “I thought I’d miss having a large yard,” says one of the homeowners, “but I sure don’t miss the maintenance, and everything our family needs is right here.” The couple has a summer home in Montauk, and they wanted their new main residence to have the same coastal, if not quite so casual, look. Designer Natalie Brown from Safavieh’s Hartsdale store was happy to oblige. “I describe the design theme as a coastal chinoiserie. It works well here because of the Tappan Zee views and the abundance of natural light,” she explains. Using navy blue as the grounding color, Brown delivered, creating a suburban waterfront home that’s both relaxed and sophisticated.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Surprise, and the sense of delight that comes with it, are two of Kelly Wearstler’s masterstrokes. Her design for this SoHo pied-à-terre evokes both reactions in spades. INTERIOR DESIGN BY
Kelly Wearstler INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Playful, daring and often tastefully over-the-top, the interior designs of Kelly Wearstler have helped define contemporary West Coast style. Her approach happens to be perfectly suited to New York as well, as proven by this three-story penthouse residence that rises high above the cobbled streets of SoHo. Destined to be the clients’ pied-à-terre, the project began with a complete renovation of the 1,800square-foot interior space. “We opened the walls and created a circular staircase with the intention of For the main staircase in this SoHo townhouse, Kelly Wearstler specified silk wallcovering hand painted in a trompe-l’oeil manner to resemble draping fabric.

making it the heart of all three floors, unifying the series of spaces, Wearstler explains. Custom, hand-painted, trompe-l’oeil silk wallcovering was designed specifically for the flow of the staircase, which spirals from the entry upward to the top penthouse floor. Art and furnishings are thoughtfully merged in every room. The artist Peter Shire created a custom console table and enamel brass cabinet. There is hand-selected furniture by Gio Ponti, Paul Evans and Jacques Jarrige. Pieces by young, emerging artists are displayed throughout, and a vintage 1970s wood painted figural sculpture commands attention at the second story entry. Signature Kelly Wearstler touches, such as the chevronpatterned stone slabs that cover the walls and floor of the master bathroom, add drama and the The kitchen (left) was designed with sliding panels reminiscent of a Japanese home. delight of the unexpected. Wearstler credits her clients for allowing these qualities: “Not only were they open to ideas; they encouraged us to push our ideas further, to surprise them.” The result of the collaboration is a richly ornamented jewel box that, for Wearstler, is like a microcosm of the city itself. “New York is the ultimate metropolis, alive with energy, passion and ideas,” she says. “Its character changes and evolves; it remains a place where traditions are kept, yet pushed to the limits. This apartment is in many ways a good example of that. So many classic elements (the grand stair, the urban terrace) are represented here, yet reinvented and refreshed.” This page, clockwise from above: A riveted metal door displays the distinctive materiality that is so important to Kelly Wearstler; walls are adorned with pieces by multiple artists, both known and emerging. The fixtures in a blue powder room ooze 1980’s Italian style. A highly patterned terrace looks out to the rooftops of SoHo.

On the outside, this rambling traditional home in New Canaan, Connecticut, is a pleasant architectural pastiche—a case of Norman Revival meets Colonial Revival meets Shingle Style. It gives the appearance of having been added to over several decades of the early 20thcentury, when in reality, the house was built in one fell swoop in the early 21st century. On the inside, the house had undeniably great bones, but they were obscured by some poor color choices. “A previous homeowner had painted the kitchen an unfortunate blue,” recalls designer Ron Marshall. “And that was just the tip of the iceberg.” Working with the new homeowners, Marshall made it his first step to right those color wrongs. He had almost every surface painted decorator white— walls, ceilings and the extensive traditional moldings. Then he complemented the architecture with modern furnishings in a very simple color scheme— lots of graphic black-and-white, soft grays and transparent materials. What little color he included is intense and hangs on the walls, in the form of paintings from the homeowners’ collection. One or two well-chosen paintings serve as a punctuation mark in each room. The finished project is proof that a restricted palette doesn’t have to be boring. Consider the entrance hall, where a black-and-white optic pattern rug

exerts a near-hypnotic effect. Club chairs positioned on this psychedelic carpet are covered in black patent leather, recalling the “wet” look of the 1960s. Also floating on the rug is a trio of free-form striped ottomans. They’re meant to be rearranged at will. In the adjacent living room, a sofa covered in a birch bark print is flanked by two towering Murano glass table lamps, which are of true ’60s vintage. Here the furniture rests on a funky shag rug that looks as though it were fashioned from paper packing material. Thanks to the spacious layout, Marshall was able to treat hallways as sitting rooms. He did the same with a media room, where lounge chairs can swivel from the conversation area to face a huge viewing screen that descends from the ceiling. The screen also functions as a blackout shade, covering a large window. By making this room metamorphic, Marshall eliminated the need to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality. That sleight of hand is evident everywhere in this home: Its deceptively simple, relaxed living spaces are all drop-dead gorgeous.

The New Glamour Meets the New Casual at Safavieh PHOTOGRAPHY BY
Peter Rymwid
Two major home design trends are creating excitement at Safavieh. One is the New Glamour, a style influenced by the Art Deco designs of Paris and Hollywood in the 1930s. Luxury materials, ranging from Alcantara to zebrawood, are used lavishly in furniture that is sleek and sensuous, rich but not ornate. The style is embodied in Safavieh’s made-in-Italy Phantom Collection and our new Safavieh Continental Collection. The other trend that’s making waves is the New Casual. It’s characterized by organic materials and natural finishes, representing another kind of hand-crafted luxury. On the pages that follow you’ll see both styles, as exemplified in our highly tailored Continental Collection and the casually elegant designs of Barclay Butera. 66

Designing rooms is like composing music: Just as musical notes blend to make a melody, so the various objects in a room, combined with colors and textures, space and light, come together to create an aesthetic environment. The effect can be harmonious—or discordant. As with a sonata, one false decorative note in a room can spoil the whole composition. Perhaps with this in mind, a family of classical musicians selected designers Denise and Missy Rinfret, known for their serene interiors, to transform a home in Manhasset, New York. The Rinfrets use Safavieh as a one-stop shop for furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories, which makes it easy to achieve a seamless look. For this project, Safavieh’s nearby Manhasset store was the one-stop source. The finished home, shown on these pages, speaks for itself. Each room tells its own tonal story and also relates to the rooms nearby. In the dining room, pictured at left, watery grays and duck’s egg blue provide a soothing cocoon for intimate meals. Elegant Chinese vases depicted in the wallpaper echo the actual Chinese vases placed on the table. In the breakfast area, seen at right, white wheel-back chairs are arrayed around a table set in blue-and-white porcelain and cobalt glassware, providing the feel of Coastal New England. A hedge of lush green privet in the backyard is the perfect backdrop to the blue-and-white scheme. In the living room, seen on the previous spread, blues and greens float on a foundation of gray and taupe. This calming palette is punched up by accents of crystal, silver and gold, including a pair of double ray gilt-wood sunburst mirrors. As in the dining room, the greek key motif mingles with Asian patterns and porcelain. This is a richly detailed room, yet it’s not the least bit overbearing. Nothing looks out of place, and, like beautiful music, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In the dining room (left), grays and blues produce an atmosphere of calm. In the breakfast area (right), painted wheel-back chairs and cheery blue-and-white tableware give the feel of Coastal New England.

Building homes on speculation may not sound like the calling of a high-end master builder, but things are different in the Hamptons. Here the typical spec house is a multimillion-dollar affair, replete with media room, butler’s pantry, glass-walled gym, in-ground pool and other expected amenities. And there are no plain-drywall bonus rooms: Extensive millwork and luxury finishes are used throughout. It’s custom luxury quality—built, as it happens, on spec for a discerning (and probably impatient) buyer. The home you see here, constructed in Water Mill, New York, by BJC Custom Builders, is a prime example—a stone and cedar shingle sprawler with high-peaked gables, dormers and other hallmarks of a prevailing Hamptons style that harkens to the late 19th century. Led by designer/contractor Matthew Pantofel, BJC created a twin nearby, a house with the same floor plan and exterior styling, and he commissioned Safavieh to furnish them both. Staging homes for builders and real estate developers is a growing endeavor for Safavieh, and the benefit for both contractors and buyers is obvious: A stylishly furnished abode helps potential buyers imagine how beautiful life could be there, and it provides the

convenience of being move-in ready. Safavieh’s Karin Krinsky, who was lead designer on the Water Mill project, explains how she approached the job: “This house had some contemporary interior finishes, so we decided to furnish it in a contemporary way, while we did the ‘twin’ in traditional style.” Because Safavieh maintains an extensive inventory, Krinsky was able to complete the project with amazing speed—in less than a week, start to finish. All of the furnishings and rugs in the home are from the Safavieh Couture collection, which helps explain the integrated look of all the spaces. Color also plays a unifying role. With the exception of the wood floors, virtually every surface is white, blue, gray, silvery, reflective or clear. “These are the colors and visual qualities of water,” notes Krinsky, “and what better palette to use here on the South Fork of Long Island, where you can sense the presence of the sea everywhere? It’s the perfect décor for a vacation home near the beach.” At press time, this home and its twin were still on the market—move-in ready, of course. S A FA V I E H s t y l e

SAFAVIEH WINE
SIPPING SICILIAN
Following a ho-hum era, vintners on this historic wineproducing island are winning new respect. TEXT BY Josh Sens
O n the map, the island of Sicily looks as if it’s about to be drop-kicked by the Italian boot. Indeed, its abundant wines have long been kicked around— known more for quantity than for quality, with flabby reds, listless whites and assorted sweet wines like Marsala and Moscato di Pantelleria that were good for cooking but not much else. Till recently, says Brian Larky, owner of wine importer Dalla Terra Winery Direct in Napa, Calif., “when people thought of Sicily, they thought of mafia and Marsala. But it’s so much more.” In fact, the island is home to more than 70 native grape varietals, with wine-making roots that run millennia deep. And vintners today are drawing on that tradition, leaning on ancient grapes such as Grillo and Catarratto with a distinctive sense of place. “Sicily is a place of great diversity, in its climate, its soils and, of course, its grapes,” says Alberto Tasca d’Almerita. “It’s also full of history and culture you can see and touch and taste.” At 44, Tasca d’Almerita is a
vintner of noble breeding—a count, no less, who is married to a princess (literally) and belongs to “the first family of Sicilian wine.” His bloodlines in the industry trace to the 1830s, when forebears planted grapes in the center of the island. With father Lucio and brother Giuseppe, he oversees five of Sicily’s most respected wineries: Tenuta Regaleali, Capofaro, Tascante, Whitaker and Sallier de la Tour. For the family business, the mid- to late-1900s brought robust growth, during which Lucio emerged as a pioneer, implementing a range of modern farming practices. He was the first Sicilian vintner to use a tractor and to dig a reservoir to catch rainwater. But he also held firm to traditions, championing indigenous varietals that were becoming vanishingly rare. Other wineries followed suit, among them Benanti, Ceuso, COS and Cusumano. To sample the finest Sicilian wines today is to appreciate their wildly diverse profiles, by turns lean and feisty, lush and complex. They’re reflective of a Sicily that contains multitudes,
its topography ranging from stark volcanic peaks to sun-kissed inland valleys to low-lying flatlands cooled by coastal fog. With five estates scattered across Sicily, the Tasca d’Almerita family makes wines in all of those settings, and their portfolio captures that wideranging terroir. It’s evident in stunning releases like Tenuta Regaleali’s 2014 Lamuri, a fruit-forward wine made from Nero d’Avola grapes grown in a rolling inland region, and Capofaro’s 2013 Didyme Malvasia, a bright white derived from fruit in vineyards stitched along Mt. Etna’s volcanic slopes. As the managing director of the family business, Alberto is the widely recognized public face of all these labels. He and his wife, Francesca Borghese, show up on glossy Italian society pages. But his family’s wines, he says, are the true stars. “People are getting more curious about indigenous grape varietals everywhere,” he says. “In that regard, Sicily is the biggest treasure in the world.”
TASTING NOTES Tenuta Regaleali Lamuri Nero d’Avola, 2014 Retail price: $16 Lush aromas of black cherry, vanilla and tobacco give way to velvety tannins on the palate in this nuanced, food-friendly wine. Tenuta Regaleali Rosso del Conte 2010 Retail price: $53 A rich ruby color is complemented by deep flavors of cherry and stone fruit that resolve in a long, smooth finish. Tascante Buonora 2014 Retail price: $20 Aged in stainless steel, this wine has hints of grapefruit and understated minerality as well as a lean, clean finish; these qualities help make it a wonderfully refreshing warm-weather white.

Etna rises above a Silican town; the dapper Alberto Tasca d’Almerita; the Grillo grape, a variety favored for Marsala winemaking; harvesting the Nero d’Avola grape varietal at the Feudo Montoni estate; a bottle of Tenuta Rapitala Grillo 2013; a lush bunch of Nerello Mascalese grapes, named for the Mascali area of Catania, where it’s believed they have originated.

THE LAST WORD WITH...
Barclay Butera “Casual, classic and elegant” describe the designer, his rooms, and his lifestyle collections at Safavieh. Who is the typical Barclay Butera customer? I have a remarkably diverse clientele, but one thing they all have in common is they come to me for stunning interiors that are glamorous but comfortable. People do not want to live in museums anymore; they want livable, inviting spaces for families and entertaining. That’s what we do best. What’s your favorite room in the home? That’s a tough one, but I have to say the family room. I love thinking about how clients live, arranging the perfect conversation and entertainment space, making sure that there are intimate corners in that room but everyone can still feel connected. How did you bring your signature style— classic, casual and elegant—to your new collections?

Both the Newport and Brentwood Collections I designed for Lexington Home Brands represent the way I live today. It’s true that I designed many of these pieces for myself, and some of the Newport Collection was actually photographed in my own home in Newport Beach. What are your favorite design trends this season? Least favorite? To be honest, I am not really a trend guy. I try not to pay attention! But I can say that I have been seeing a great deal of white, silver and soft pastels lately, and that works for me. My least favorite design trend? Primary colors. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received about interior design? Well it’s not exactly advice, but I did get my work ethic from my Mom, who is also
an interior designer. I learned the business from the bottom up, and there was no cutting corners. You’ve got to run the race before you can stand on the podium and receive your medal. I did a great deal of running in the early years and it clearly paid off. What’s next for you? I have five cocktail books in print and a really cool vision for book number six next year. I have also just opened a real estate firm in Southern California, which offers exceptional synergies with my design business. My third lifestyle collection with Lexington is set to debut in April 2019, and I love the direction it’s taking. If I close my eyes and dream, I’d love to take my brand global. When you dream, dream big!
Barclay Butera styled a living room (top) with Sydney chairs and the Naples ottoman, both from his Newport Collection. Other pieces include the Sydney chair in a landscape fabric and the Balboa Island raffia hall chest (center left), the Lido Isle nailhead chest (center right), the Shorecliff bed (above) and the Corona Del Mar table. The collection is available at Safavieh.
