FOR YOU Welcome to the new issue of Safavieh Style. The mission of this magazine is the same as the mission of our home furnishings stores—to inspire you to enhance your life by transforming your home. In the pages that follow, you’ll see some of the newly available, on-trend furniture, rugs, lighting, art and accessories that we’ve selected from around the world for our retail galleries. You’ll also step into beautiful homes that our talented interior designers have created for our customers. These range from cozy havens to a sleek Manhattan apartment to a fabulous mansion, each inspiring in its own way. Coincidentally, we have two stories of empty nesters. One couple chose to downsize and the other upsized, but they have this in common: Both decided to retire the traditional furnishings of their past homes and adopt a more youthful, transitional style. Before you dive in, I’d like to share news of how Safavieh is growing and evolving. We’re opening three new showrooms for your convenience. The first, in Bridgewater, New Jersey, is open now. Coming soon: our SoHo store in New York City and our SoNo store in South Norwalk, Connecticut. Both SoHo and SoNo are known as design districts. In South Norwalk, we’re renovating the landmark building that formerly housed Klaffs. For decades, Klaffs was the go-to destination for lighting, and we’ll continue that legacy. Plus, on four floors, we’ll offer furniture, rugs, art and accessories. For all of these new showrooms, Safavieh has purchased the real estate, reflecting our commit-

ment to the future. As the saying goes, we’re in this for the long haul. That may strike you as a bold statement, given the tumultuous nature of bricks-and-mortar retail in the 21st century. But I can proclaim our staying power with confidence because of our company culture, which is focused on continually adapting to customer needs and market trends, and continually refining what we call the Safavieh Experience. Our new showrooms will be large and chockfull of items for sale, but they won’t be “big-box stores.” We’re carefully curating the merchandise and organizing it in lifestyle boutiques, where you can immerse yourself in whatever themed home environments resonate with you. Each new store also will feature a design center staffed by talented, technology-enabled interior designers, whose services are available to you free of charge. Many of our existing stores have been converted already to this format of lifestyle boutiques and design centers, and the remainder will follow. Large pre-war apartments in Manhattan are especially prized. When the owners of the one seen here were ready for a lifestyle change, they didn’t think of moving. They simply called on Safavieh to reimagine the place. “If you saw ‘before’ pictures of this apartment, you wouldn’t recognize it,” says Iris Carias, a designer based at Safavieh’s Glen Cove, New York, flagship store, who tackled the project with her colleague, head designer Joe Murphy. “The rooms were beautifully furnished with the highest quality traditional pieces to match the pre-war finishes.” “Rarely have I been part of such a total visual transformation,” notes Carias. Every surface was refinished. Every light fixture was changed. Where there had been a forest of mahogany furniture, they brought in pieces finished in painted wood, metallics and upholstery. “Dark wood was almost totally banished,” quips Murphy, “but not quite: You’ll notice a mahogany desktop in the library. It sits atop a really stunning satin metal base—a beautiful modern context for dark wood.” Repetition of colors helps tie together the various spaces, gray being the new master hue. Certain stylistic themes and shapes are also repeated. For example, variations on the Klismos As with other rooms in the apartment, gray is the new dominant tone in the library. Traditional wood paneling was left in situ but refinished in lacquer and given new hardware. The rug is from Safavieh’s Tiffany Collection.

chair, with its outcurved legs and curved back, appear in most of the rooms, as do hand-woven rugs by Safavieh in shades of gray. While the redesigned apartment has a totally new look, the project is also notable for what didn’t change. Walls were not knocked down, so the apartment still “reads” as pre-war, with a succession of defined rooms. Historic moldings and fire surrounds were left intact; any stained wood paneling was lacquered. “We didn’t want or need to mess with the architecture,” says Carias. “The total transformation we achieved is a testament to the power of paint and new furnishings.”

This charming living room rewards the eye with subtle contrasts to Kosh Palmer’s low, linear, light-colored furniture arrangement. The contrasts range from the diagonal spikes of the wall mirror, to the dovetailed edge of the coffee table. to the improbably thin metal legs supporting the deep-cushioned Kelly Wearstler chairs.
Contrast is a key element of interior design, and there are many ways to evoke it—through color, texture, solids and voids, patterned and plain surfaces, horizontal and vertical angles…. Kosh Palmer, a designer based at Safavieh’s Livingston, New Jersey, flagship store, used all of these techniques—and angles especially—to furnish an appealing family home in the nearby town of Chatham. Wood-stained trim may be out of favor, but Palmer employed it ingeniously in the S A FA V I E H s t y l e

living room to emphasize the vertical lines of the full-height windows. Picked out in this way (and harking back to the ubiquitous chestnut trim that was part of the New Jersey design vernacular of a century ago), the windows form the perfect contrast to Palmer’s low, linear, lightcolored seating plan for the room. There are two clear statement pieces in this space, and both rely on angular contrast to stand out: The wall mirror consists entirely of diagonals—irregular shards of glass framed by spiky gilt metal fronds— while the coffee table, for its part, presents a dramatic wood-and-metal edge that mimics dovetail joinery. The theme of angular contrast continues in other rooms of the house. In the entrance hall, a naturalistic bronze tree branch skewers the smooth uprights of a console table. Adjacent to the hall is a formal dining room, where a distressed wood refectory table balances squarely on a massive trestle base. Surrounding the table are pretty, contemporary takes on the traditional wing chair. The chairs form a series of sinuous curves clustered around the perpendicular core of the table. Presiding over the scene is a gilt sunburst mirror—not the expected circular one, but a large horizontal rectangle. Some interiors put visitors on high alert, fairly assaulting the senses with luxury touches. These rooms, by contrast, exude a quiet drama. Like the soft-spoken Palmer herself, they communicate with a subtle eloquence that rewards one’s attention.

Many couples downsize when their children leave the nest, but a Glen Head, New York, family chose to do the opposite. “We raised our kids in a fairly small home, and when they grew up, my husband and I decided it was time to spread our wings a bit,” says the mother of three. “It wasn’t easy. Almost every large home we looked at was tired and needed major renovations. Then we found this home, which had already been thoughtfully updated, and we snapped it up.” The rambling ranch was movein ready, but the couple wanted all-new furnishings. Enter David Nasseri, a designer at Safavieh’s Glen Cove store. “The homeowners were moving away from traditional, but they didn’t want modern,” he notes, “so our solution was elegant, transitional décor.” With broad corridors and doorways and the linear layout typical of a ranch, the house offers pleasing sightlines from one space to another, a feature that raised the design stakes for Nasseri. “For example, you can see the dining room clearly from the kitchen and the living room,” he explains. “Plain fabric on the dining room chairs would have been a wasted opportunity, so I selected a bold, graphic pattern for the chair backs. It’s exciting from any distance.” He also accented the dining room with champagne, a color he used in the kitchen and living room as well, to strengthen the visual connection between spaces. In the television room, which too many families regard as a purely utilitarian den, Nasseri was convinced that comfort and sizzle could coexist. He paired a sectional sofa with dramatic accent chairs, contemporary sculpture and a cocktail ottoman. Functional and fun, the ottoman has a center well for

drinks and an upholstered surface for resting feet or seating. A built-in bar completes the room. Almost all of the furniture in the house features custom fabric and finishes. Taking advantage of Safavieh’s established relationships and buying power with top brands, Nasseri was able to have all the custom pieces made and delivered in eight to 10 weeks. In other words, the empty nesters didn’t have long to wait for the end result: a uniquely furnished, highly custom work of art in which to enjoy the next phase of their life together.

A Walker Tower penthouse by Thom Filicia radiates timeless style. Although few know his name today, Ralph Walker was as famous as an architect could be in his time. The American Institute of Architects dubbed him “the architect of the century,” and Frank Lloyd Wright, never one for praise, called Walker “the only other honest architect in America.” Walker left an enduring stamp on New York City as the preeminent designer of Art Deco skyscrapers. His works include the Irving Trust Company Building

(1931), now known as One Wall Street, and the Barclay-Vesey Building (1927), now known as the Verizon Building. Because he rejected Modernism, Walker’s reputation suffered mightily. He died in relative obscurity in 1973, having shot himself in the head with a silver bullet that he forged himself. Flash forward to 2013. In a more seemly act of creative destruction, developers gutted one of Walker’s masterworks, the office building at 215 West 17th Street, redeveloped it as residential condominiums, and renamed the place Walker Tower. Blessed with 18-inch-thick exterior walls and 14-foot ceilings, the rocksolid and spacious tower apartments were bought up by A-listers. One of the penthouse units set a price record for lower Manhattan, ringing in at $70 million. In short, thanks to the Manhattan real estate boom and renewed interest in Art Deco style, Ralph Walker’s fame is on the upswing, and Chelsea’s Walker Tower is a coveted address. It goes without saying that a penthouse in Walker Tower is a coveted commission for any interior designer. Certainly that was the case for Thom Filicia, the telegenic star whose design portfolio is studded with classically modern, personality-filled homes. His client was an adventurous couple with four young children. To create a truly distinctive home for them, Filicia began where he always does: “I think it’s imperative to look at three elements for every project—the location, the architecture and the lifestyle. and the people that live there.” Here the situation called for a balancing act. Filicia envisioned a bold aesthetic and a somewhat playful, “young” attitude, but—partly in deference to the architecture—he wanted the décor to be tailored, luxurious and not overly modern. Pattern-on-pattern was used to create a rich, layered look that helps connect the various elements and spaces, as does the repetition of warm gold and bronze hues. In the living room, for example, angular sculptures are echoed in the patterns of the rug. A bristling, bronze sunburst chandelier brings more angles into play; the fixture’s design is decidedly contemporary, but it’s also reminiscent of the custom 1920s hardware used throughout the building. The dining room, too, offers a brilliant geometry lesson. A herringbone floor and a large Coromandel screen establish strong diagonal lines. These are echoed by the dining table, which is actually set on the diagonal. Its trapezoidal bronze base is topped by a thin, long oval stone slab. Striped Klismos chairs keep the mood from getting too serious. It helped that the homeowners were willing to take aesthetic chances. A thing that drives Filicia “crazy” is “people playing it too safe.” He adds, “It’s important to not only give the client what they want, but to push them to truly explore their point of view and go slightly further than they might have gone on their own and take the design to a higher level.” Mission accomplished in Walker Tower. The master bedroom combines strong geometrics and soft textures. Bravura touches include orange studded-leather lamps atop mirrored bedside tables. In a space that features all the lavish patterning of a peacock’s tail, it’s fitting that the art above the bed depicts…a peacock.

Personal chemistry usually plays a role in the choice of an interior designer. So it was unusual—almost unheard of, in fact—when a group of Asian friends from the San Francisco area commissioned Safavieh remotely to create their new East Coast homes, never having met the design team. First up would be a newly constructed house, which you see here, in Short Hills, New Jersey. The project was embraced by Esther Rubin and Michele Townsend, designers based at Safavieh’s Paramus showroom. “The client’s wishes were simple,” says Rubin. “Keep each room on the contemporary side of traditional style. Make the color palette neutral—whites and grays.” Other than neutrals, color in the finished rooms comes from accents alone— paintings on the walls, plants and flowers, metallic trim and the occasional throw pillow. Says Townsend, “Design in absentia actually worked quite well. We emailed and texted photographs, and used regular mail to send fabric swatches. The client approved choices every step of the way. Even so, having the client step into the finished space sight unseen was a bit unnerving, but—whew!— they were very happy with their new home. And now that the client has moved in, we’re continuing to work together on some finishing touches.” The lesson seems clear: In the digital age, distance need not be a barrier to success in personalized, custom interior design—especially when you choose the right professionals. A muted palette was used throughout the home at the client’s request. Eye-catching colors are reserved for artwork, flowers and the occasional throw pillow. In the master bedroom (right), rich materials such as velvet and sheepskin lend some dramatic flourish.

Harmony in residential design comes from many elements, the most fundamental of which is pleasing proportions. Palladio recommended using the Harmonic Mean to calculate the ideal height of a room. According to the formula (which he derived from Plato’s Timaeus, if you must know), a room that is, say, 42 feet long and 21 feet wide would have a ceiling height of 28 feet. There are few large domestic spaces in the world, outside of Palladio’s Veneto, that meet this lofty standard, but the room you see here comes close. What the room lacks in supposedly ideal height (imagine thinking this ceiling is too low!), it makes up for in other harmonious elements, such as a unified color palette, objects displayed in pairs and an abundance of natural light. “It’s the closest thing to a perfect room I’ve had the privilege to work on,” says Mary Piselli, an interior designer who uses Safavieh’s Manhasset, New York, design center as her go-to source for furniture, rugs and accessories. “Except for a few family heirlooms, every piece in the room comes from Safavieh.” Most of the furniture features custom fabrics and finishes, if not custom sizing. “In a room this grand, you need some pieces made on a larger-thanaverage scale,” says Karin Krinsky, a designer on staff at Safavieh’s Manhasset location, who worked with Piselli on the project. “The very large, sleigh-like daybed is an example.” A corner of the living room displays a harmony of eclectic styles, with furniture from Safavieh complementing the homeowners’ artwork and grand piano. The Aubusson carpet was custom woven for the space.

While the architecture and moldings are rigorously historical, the furniture is a mixture of historical reproductions, including chairs from the Althorp Collection, and contemporary and transitional pieces. Harmony by definition comes from variety, not sameness, and the modern touches in this room are critical to its success. “Without the newer pieces, the room could have looked like a museum,” says Piselli. “The homeowner was clear that she did not want a showplace. Family is center of her life, and she wanted a space where she could celebrate that sentiment.” Pictured above is another space in the house, the domed entrance hall, with the dining room glimpsed beyond. Because the hall is a high-traffic area, Piselli and Krinsky kept the furnishings sparse. Adequate drama comes from the hand-painted mural, the large compass rose inlaid in stone and, as Palladio would have it, the architecture itself. S A FA V I E H s t y l e

Looking toward retirement, two long-time residents of Eastchester, New York, knew they wanted to remain in the town, where they had raised their children. But the couple also wanted to simplify their surroundings, banish clutter and shed some of the flotsam and jetsam of suburban living. “It was a fun and fascinating process,” says Colleen Kiel, an interior designer in Safavieh’s Hartsdale, New York, store. “I had worked with them on their previous home, which was very traditional. For their next phase of life, they purchased an older house on a corner lot, tore it down and in its place built their new dream house.” The new house has a traditional Shingle Style façade that fits into the neighborhood. Inside, however, the look is tougher to categorize. “With its blacktrimmed windows, clean lines and absence of ornamentation, the interior reminds me of Bauhaus architecture,” says Kiel, referring to the influential German design movement that’s celebrating its centennial this year. Sensing the mood for change, the homeowners’ grown daughter campaigned to get her parents to “loosen up their style.” Kiel was all for it. “I had the Bauhaus in mind—with the clients’ blessing—when we selected the furnishings. We were aiming for pared-down style, bold and just a bit retro. I coined a phrase: downsizing to cool.” The successful interplay of architecture and décor can be seen in the main living area, where the simple, linear forms of the sofa and chairs echo the slender black frames and mullions of the windows. Circular white tables provide a counterpoint. In the dining area, the sturdy, rustic wood table clearly owes a design debt to Mies van der Rohe, a chief exponent of the Bauhaus who is no less renowned for his furniture designs than for his architecture. simplicity of the table contrasts with the dining chairs—soft upholstered seats resting on sleek chrome bases. Heightening the contrast is a huge, yellow Murano glass bowl from the homeowners’ collection, perched unabashedly on the center of the table. The master bedroom is a place apart. Here the style is more transitional, with a plush, tufted bed flanked by mirrored nightstands. Still, Kiel couldn’t resist creating an artful echo of those black-lined windows in the form of custom black picture frames. “Adopting a new style required a leap of faith, but my clients love the way it all turned out,” she says. “In the end, they got exactly what they wanted: a clean, uncluttered, stylish new home.”

Ease of living is what attracts many homebuyers to the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills, where amenities include housekeeping, pet walking, shoe shines and a coffee bar adjacent to the lobby. What could be more enticing? Ease of moving in. Nobody enjoys the chore of moving—all that stuff!—so RXR Realty, developer of the Ritz-Carlton property in North Hills, decided to sweeten the deal by offering this major inducement: New homebuyers can have their suites custom furnished by Safavieh at no extra charge. The master bedroom is built around a statement piece—the elegant king bed with black upholstery and platinum wood trim. “To make the bed stand out even more, we used a magnificent wallpaper on the accent wall,” explains Carias, “and we lit it with a gorgeous chandelier.” Setting the tone for the whole suite is the foyer, a study in white and gold. “We wanted to create a tableau that makes you go ‘wow’ as soon as you enter the home,” says Ramachandra. The arrangement is quite spare, and the palette muted. But there’s a bit of gold in everything—furniture, accessories and even the painting—that does give the foyer an undeniable wow factor. As in the other rooms of this spectacular suite, the sum is greater than its parts.

Every suite at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills, has “good bones”—high ceilings, floor-toceiling windows, French doors opening to terraces or balconies—along with prized intangibles such as amazing soundproofing, creating a luxurious environment in which Safavieh’s interior designers can work their magic. “In the model home shown here,” says Genesis Jimenez, a designer based at Safavieh’s Manhasset showroom, “we’re catering to what’s popular with today’s luxury homebuyers—contemporary and transitional furnishings presented in neutral colors. Gray is very chic and very sought-after right now.” This muted palette might also be called the Ritz-Carlton look, familiar to anyone who has stayed at one of the five-star resorts. The visual transition from lobby, to corridor, to this private home is quite seamless. Closer inspection yields a surprise: There’s actually a lot of pattern incorporated in the design. Consider the decidedly feminine master bedroom. Patterned bedding seems to float atop the king bed, whose diamondhatched headboard and footboard echo the subtle, sculpted diamonds of the rug. Horizontal stripes in the slubbed-silk wallcovering provide a backdrop to the free-form agate depicted in a framed painting. “The second bedroom features no less pattern, and it’s even more subtle,” points out David Nasseri, Jimenez’s design partner on the project, who is based at the Glen Cove flagship store. There’s a quiet riot of Escher-like geometry on the bedding and throw pillows, a grid of metallic beading on the table lamps, undulating ripples on the wallcovering and bursts of mother-of-pearl on the bedside tables. These small details serve to delight the eye and boost the sense of luxury, giving visitors the cosseted feeling of inhabiting a hotel suite one never has to leave. That, in short, is the special allure of ownership at the RitzCarlton, Long Island, North Hills.

In the dining area at left, the table’s gilded pedestals make it a true statement piece. In its previous incarnation, this living room had dark-stained beams synonymous with brooding Normandy style architecture. With wood painted white and larger windows installed, the space appears to have been transported from the northern coast of France to the Côte d’Azur. These simple changes prepared the space for Maria Roa’s exciting new decorating scheme based on a light palette and contemporary furnishings.

After years of devotion to French Provincial décor, which they embraced during its third or fourth American heyday, a family residing in Sands Point, New York, decided to go all in for change. Well, not entirely all in, points out their interior designer, Maria Roa, who is based at Safavieh’s Manhasset, New York, design center: The Francophile couple wanted to keep their collection of fin-de-siècle posters, along with their display of Cognac, Calvados and other spirits set on the bar top and ready for impromptu celebrations. But for everything else, the direction was clear: Take it away and pivot to a more urbane, contemporary look. So, large armoires, out. Sleek metal-and-glass tables, in. Caned ladder-back chairs, out. Abstract
bronze sculptures, in. The result of the redesign, which you see on these pages, still has some decidedly French elements, but they’re ones you would find in a Chanel boutique and not on a farm in Provence. The new look is easier to live with, says Roa. “French Provincial is always pretty, but it can be restrictive,” she notes. “By contrast, the space now feels international and of the moment.” The tones are lighter (stained wood beams were painted white…), as is the scale of the furniture. The seating plans are more open, encouraging flow. A greater variety of art appears at home in the space. “The new vibe is relaxed and sophisticated at the same time,” adds Roa, “and that’s a good combination for today’s lifestyle.”

After you’ve collected everything that catches your eye, come back to your ideas and edit them to include only the best. Before moving to New York to attend Juilliard, you grew up in Louisville. Did your boyhood home shape your sense of style? It did. My parents were very stylish, and our home was filled with design inspiration—beautifully furnished with modern classic furniture and art from masters like Saarinen, Platner, Eames and Joe Colombo. the funkiest and edgiest pieces. I love the Raleigh table, which has an elaborate mix of materials and yet is also rich with functionality. In some ways, it’s more like a sculpture than a piece of furniture. Your pieces have proven staying power. Do you think of furniture that way when you design it—that it may serve a family for generations? Because my aesthetic draws on timeless influences, I’d like to think my designs will stand the test of time. I’ve never looked to be trendy. Instead, I believe good design is always in style.
