DREAMING WITHOUT BOUNDARIES Hello and welcome to the latest issue of Safavieh Style, the magazine that encourages you to dream without boundaries about a more beautiful home. This issue showcases some exciting new endeavors for Safavieh Home Furnishings. One is the unveiling of our Manhasset, New York, store on the famous Miracle Mile. Why did we decide to open a 12th Safavieh retail showroom? The catalyst was The Phantom Collection, the Art-Deco-inspired line that we commissioned from Philipp Selva, our design partner in Italy. We were so impressed by the way the collection turned out that we wanted to display it at its best, in a contemporary lifestyle setting. The Manhasset store showcases not only The Phantom Collection but also our growing range of high-end modern furniture, light fixtures and accessories. See the sleek new space and the best of The Phantom Collection, beginning on page 26. In this issue you’ll also see how our designers transformed a historic home in Mill Neck, New York into a modern mansion. Built as Frost Mill Lodge circa 1926, it was the country home of Irving Brokaw, the first ice skater to represent the United States in the Olympics. Inspired by Brokaw’s competitive spirit, I gave our designers the challenge of setting a Safavieh record by furnishing Frost Mill Lodge in only two days.
20
That’s right, two days! The first day would be to plan the rooms and select in-stock merchandise from our Glen Cove showroom. The second day was for delivery, setup and cleaning; the team needed to vanish before sundown, leaving the house spotless and move-in ready. It took an Olympian effort, and they succeeded, demonstrating two key elements of the Safavieh Experience—speed of service and white-glove delivery. View the results, beginning on page 68, and you’ll agree that our designers did a stellar job of creating a beautiful, tasteful home for a 21st century family. There’s plenty more to delight you in this issue, such as the story of The Beacon, the first new residence to be built as part of the Garvies Point waterfront redevelopment in Glen Cove, New York. You’ll step aboard a luxury cruising yacht; travel to Althorp, the 500-year-old English estate of the Spencer family; and catch up with designer Cynthia Rowley, who shares her philosophy of room design. Enjoy the magazine, and remember, whatever you can dream, Safavieh can create. Here’s to a beautiful home! Kind regards, MICHAEL YARAGHI

The catalyst for opening Safavieh’s new showroom on the Miracle Mile in Manhasset was the company’s introduction of The Phantom Collection, inspired by the glamour of 1930s New York. The dining table and chairs shown here are part of this new collection.

Those who cruise the Miracle Mile (to quote Billy Joel), the famous highend shopping district in Manhasset, New York, on Long Island’s North shore, will notice a newcomer: Safavieh Home Furnishings. With 11 established stores in the tri-state area, including one in nearby Glen Cove, Safavieh already had metro New York well covered. So the question naturally arises, why open a 12th store? “The short answer is that we want to showcase our growing collection of modern furniture in a luxurious modern setting,” says Michael Yaraghi, co-owner and CEO of the company. But there’s a backstory to the decision: It began with a love affair…with Art-Deco style. Born in France, Art Deco reached its glamorous apex in the New York of the 1930s. Think Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building, a streamliner train pulling out of Grand Central and an Auburn Boattail Speedster pulling up to the Stork Club. Think the grand staircase of Radio City Music Hall and the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria. Whether in architecture, motorized transportation or interior design and furnishings, the best examples of Art Deco combine exuberant style, striking geometry, pleasing proportions, quality materials and high craftsmanship. Almost a century after their creation, these designs still feel completely fresh. Enchanted by Art Deco, Safavieh set out to create a new collection Imagined by Safavieh, designed by famed architect Lorenzo Bellini, made in Italy by Philipp Selva and showcased in Safavieh’s new Manhasset showroom, The Phantom Collection represents the best in Art-Deco inspired design and craftsmanship. This Phantom Collection bedroom recalls the heyday of Old Hollywood.

of furniture that captured the modern luxury of the 1930s. “We partnered with Philipp Selva, the Italian furniture maker, and Selva’s creative genius, the architect and designer Lorenzo Bellini,” explains Yaraghi. “We call this new line The Phantom Collection after one of the design inspirations, a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom touring car owned by Marlene Dietrich.” The Phantom Collection does not consist of historical reproductions. Rather, Bellini began with the spirit of American Art Deco, added a touch of Italian Modernism, and used his own proportions, lines, materials and colors to create something new and timeless. Not only was The Phantom Collection designed in Italy. It’s made in Italy, too—a rarity in today’s world, where so many home goods are manufactured elsewhere.
“I was so impressed by the design and level of craftsmanship that came out of our partnership,” says Yaraghi, “that I felt we ought to showcase the collection in a modern lifestyle setting.” So it was that a love of Art Deco begat The Phantom Collection, which begat the Manhasset showroom. “But the new store is not just about The Phantom Collection,” adds Yaraghi. “We offer an expansive range of highend, hand-crafted modern furniture, much of it made in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Curating the best of it in a modern architectural space just makes good design sense and business sense. Our customers can easily see how the lifestyle will translate to their homes.” Safavieh’s Manhasset design showroom is located at 1649 Northern Boulevard, not far from Americana Manhasset.
Taking architectural cues from a Chanel showroom, Safavieh’s new store on the Miracle Mile (left) is the perfect setting to showcase high-end modern furniture. In a Phantom Collection dining room (above), iconic Art Deco shapes are fused with Italian Modernist lines. The dining chairs not only look elegant; they may be the most comfortable dining chairs ever designed.

A physician named Thomas Garvie put Glen Cove, New York, on the map. In 1827, he convinced Cornelius Vanderbilt to launch steamboat service between Glen Cove and Manhattan. The marine ferry turned Glen Cove into a thriving summer resort. Industry arrived, and factories were built along the banks of Glen Cove Creek. More wealth followed, as J.P. Morgan, F.W. Woolworth and other tycoons built coastal estates here. Like so many once-thriving waterfronts, Dr. Garvie’s namesake land, Garvies Point, where the creek flows into Long Island Sound, did not age gracefully in the 20th century. After many decades of decline, it took a public-private partnership between the Town of Glen Cove and RXR Realty—and 20 years of planning and approvals—to set the stage for revitalization. Now construction is under way on a “new” Garvies Point, a multi-use, resort-style neighborhood that will occupy nearly 60 acres of Glen Cove’s waterfront. The Garvies Point waterfront redevelopment is the largest real estate project undertaken on Long Island in decades. A mile-long waterfront esplanade will be home to restaurants, three marinas, launches for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, an outdoor amphitheater for live entertainment and several multi-dwelling residences. Twenty-eight acres reserved as open space for public access will be studded with
36
parks and playgrounds, with adjacent access to about five miles of marked nature trails at the 62-acre Garvies Point preserve. The first residential properties for sale are at The Beacon, a complex of 167 one-, two- and three-bedroom condominiums. RXR, which developed The Ritz-Carlton Residences at North Hills, has assembled some of the same partners that helped make that project a success. Daniel Gales Sotheby’s International Realty is handling sales at The Beacon; Safavieh and Studio Grella have furnished the model, and Safavieh will offer its design services to buyers. As you can see from the images on these pages, The Beacon will be a lushly landscaped address in a true waterfront setting. The architecture is classically contemporary. Eight-foot windows will offer expansive views of Glen Cove Creek, Garvies Point Preserve and Long Island Sound. A stone’s throw from The Beacon is the ferry terminal, which will offer scenic ferry service to Manhattan. Ferries have come a long way since Dr. Garvie brought Commodore Vanderbilt’s early steamships to Glen Cove. A high-speed hydrofoil will reach Manhattan in 45 minutes—a cherry-on-top amenity that makes Garvies Point all the more appealing to prospective buyers.

This model home for The Beacon highlights its waterside setting, with views of Glen Cove Creek and Long Island Sound. To create a contemporary and energetic look, Safavieh emphasized glass and polished metals in the furnishings. Renderings of The Beacon’s façade (previous pages and at right) show its careful integration into the landscape, including its frontage on the historic, restored creek.

Dramatic series that unveil the private lives of British royalty and aristocracy have created quite a buzz of late. Whether your taste runs more toward “The Crown” or “Downton Abbey,” there’s a lot to be said for the cultivated style and educated taste of an upper-class Brit. Few estates have done a better job of creating a window into that world than Althorp in Northampton, about an hour-and-ahalf north of London. Since Sir John Spencer built the house in 1508, Althorp has been home to 19 generations of Spencers. The Spencer line has been closely allied with the British Royal Family for many of those generations, and includes several memorable personalities who, in their time, left a mark on the world. Though none, of course, can compare in fame to Lady Diana Spencer, the globally admired mother of Britain’s princes William and Harry, who is buried on the estate. Currently in residence: Diana’s younger brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, who lives on the 13,000acre property with his Canadian-born wife, née C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 5 9

KEEPER OF THE FLAME Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, answers our questions about life at Althorp. When you were a young boy and your grandfather owned Althorp, the scale of the place must have seemed extraordinary. What are your early recollections of the house? It wasn’t just the scale of the place, which was of course impossible to wrap your head round as a small child, but also the fact that it was very much my grandfather’s home. He was in charge there from 1922, and had left his stamp everywhere. I remember going to stay there as children, and being terrified of doing something wrong—breaking a priceless object, or whatever. My grandmother was always so loving, but my grandfather was slightly terrifying! Do you have a favorite room at Althorp? Is it different from the room that was your favorite as a boy? The library is the most extraordinary space—so cool and elegant, yet really welcoming. It’s always been the main reception room, whenever there have been guests in the house. I think the leather spines of the books make for a beautiful backdrop—such a rich texture. It’s always been my favorite room in the house, especially with the huge windows allowing light to pour in. Nineteen generations of Spencers have called Althorp home. Many have undertaken building programs or decorating projects, and so left a mark on the house. Do you feel a tension between your stewardship of the past and a desire to make your own mark on the place? I realized from when I took over, exactly 25 years ago, that this extraordinary building could be a home, but the house is so historic that it demands respect for its heritage. I’ve reroofed the house, redone the exterior, put in new plumbing, heating, security, and redecorated pretty much every room. Luckily, I am a historian—my degree from Oxford is in history, and I’ve written several history books—so I get what needs to be done, and also how my stewardship is just a link in the chain. My earliest ancestors would probably be amazed that their family still has Althorp today, to be honest! More than 500 years—it’s quite a good run. Tell us something about the improvement projects that your wife, Countess Spencer, is overseeing at the house. We have been remodeling some of the gardens, and this has been very much my wife’s project. She has a sense of the beauty of the place—her father managed national parks in her native Canada, and so blending the beauty of the 550-acre park with the 20-acre garden is something she has a great feel for. Has your wife brought any North American traditions to life at Althorp? Despite her being Canadian, and my being English, we both spend a lot of time in the U.S.A., and we have celebrated Thanksgiving at Althorp over the past few years. It’s a great time to get our American friends to come and enjoy Althorp. Depite my family’s having supported American independence back in the 18th century, we don’t celebrate the 4th of July at Althorp…yet!

Karen Villeneuve, now the Countess Spencer. (If you’re a fan of either show mentioned above, you’ll spot the familiar storyline: blue-blooded Brit takes red-blooded North American wife.) Furnished with a veritable treasure trove of antiques and art—widely described as one of the finest private collections in Europe—each of Althorp’s 90 rooms is intriguing and has a fascinating story all its own. Some of the more notable rooms are shown on these pages, along with examples of furniture from the Althorp Living History Furniture Collection, which is available at Safavieh. Once an open courtyard where visitors would arrive and dismount their horses, this central hallway (left) with its grand oak staircase now houses the Spencer Gallery. It was a fine sales figure for opening weekend: $85 million. That wasn’t the box office of a new Hollywood movie, but rather, the value of apartments snatched up in Tower 2 of The Grand at Sky View Parc in Flushing, New York, during the first two days of availability—a measure of how hot SVP, as some residents call it for short, has become. There’s a lot to like about this residential-and-retail complex, which S A FA V I E H s t y l e

feels almost like its own city. A seven-acre rooftop park, complete with pools and tennis courts, sits atop nearly 1 million square feet of retail stores. The Grand apartments themselves, designed by Canadian architect Peter Clewes, are sleek, luxurious and packed with amenities. And then there are the views— Citi Field, the Manhattan skyline, Long Island Sound…. Naturally, penthouses at The Grand have the best views of all. The one shown here was decorated as a model by Safavieh. While the purpose of models is simply to help prospects envision a complete home, many buyers, it turns out, can’t imagine improving on the work of Safavieh designers Karin Krinsky and Joe Murphy: They’re asking for their apartment, whether a onebedroom or a penthouse, to be furnished exactly like the model they were sold on. (Yes, buying a penthouse fully furnished is now a thing.) It’s a cliché to say that high-rise interior design is all about the views. “Certainly we wanted to favor the views,” says Krinsky, “so we kept the furniture low and neutral in color. But it’s more correct to say we designed this penthouse as we design any home—for the comfort and delight of the people who will live there, as well as to complement the architecture.” Here the style is appropriately modern and quiet. The spaces are uncluttered, flowing and consistent with the principles of Feng Shui. In short, whether you’re looking outward or inward, the views in this penthouse are always great.

Two key elements of the Safavieh Experience are speedy service and white-glove delivery. Recently Michael Yaraghi, CEO of the company, tested the customer promise by issuing a good-natured challenge to his staff: Furnish a historic mansion, Frost Mill Lodge in Mill Neck, New York, in a mere two days, start to finish. Day one would involve planning the rooms and selecting in-stock merchandise from Safavieh’s Glen Cove, New York, showroom. Day two would be just as demanding: Deliver the furniture, rugs, accessories, artwork and light fixtures— including crystal chandeliers! Place (or hang) them all just so. Then clean up and depart, leaving the house move-in ready. Rising to the challenge, the Glen Cove design staff decided to divide and conquer: Each interior designer would take on a room. (Evelyn Miller and Beena Ramachandra chose to pair up, grabbing two plum spaces—the entrance hall and the massive living room.) In this way, the designers ensured they wouldn’t literally trip over each other. They also made a joint decision on style: They would use an eclectic mix of traditional, transitional and contemporary pieces. This gave them maximum latitude in selecting merchandise, further ensuring they’d meet their

SKATING THROUGH THE JAZZ AGE:
The Story of Frost Mill Lodge Trained as a lawyer, Irving Brokaw never practiced. He dabbled as a financier and became a respected painter, exhibited at the Luxembourg Gallery in Paris. But the activity that made him famous was figure skating. Scion of an old New York family, Brokaw had enough wealth to pursue skating with abandon. As a senior at Princeton in 1893, he saw a skating exhibition at the old St. Nicholas rink in New York, and he was hooked. Brokaw traveled to Europe, skating extensively and studying the sport. Returning to America, he popularized the International style of figure skating, which was less rigid and formal than the prevailing style. Brokaw won the title Champion of America in 1906. Two years later, he became the first American to skate in the Olympics, where he finished sixth. Brokaw’s book The Art of Skating revolutionized the sport in the U.S. and became known as the skater’s bible. His main home was in Manhattan, in what amounted to a family compound. At Fifth Avenue and the northeast side of 79th Street, his father, Isaac Vail Brokaw, had built a massive chateau, designed by Rose & Stone, in the 1880s. In 1906, the senior Brokaw hired Charles Rose to design twin neo-Gothic mansions for sons Irving and Howard, which were built adjacent to their father’s house. Then, in 1914, the father built a fourth house, at 5 East 79th Street, for a married daughter, Elvira McNair. Shown at right, the “L” of limestone mansions, long ago demolished, was known as “the Brokaw Corner.” The 1910 census found Irving Brokaw living on Fifth Avenue with his family of four—along with a staff of 11 from England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, France, Germany, Switzerland and Hungary. Perhaps he yearned for the quiet of a country retreat, for eventually he purchased property with a large pond, perfect for winter skating, in Mill Neck, New York. Brokaw hired the firm of Walker & Gillette to design Frost Mill Lodge, the house you see at left. He chose the neo-Georgian style, a favorite of society families who built mansions on Long Island’s Gold Coast in the early 20th century. Irving Brokaw died in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1939. He is buried in Locust Valley, New York.
Irving Brokaw, shown doing what he loved best in an undated portrait, is remembered as a founding father of American figure skating. His main home (above) was at Fifth Avenue and East 79th Street in Manhatten, a cluster of family mansions known as the Brokaw Corner.
Irving Brokaw built Frost Mill Lodge as his country home around 1926. The house was designed in the neo-Georgian style by Walker & Gilette, a firm known for mansions in Manhattan and Tuxedo Park, N.Y. With its flat roof, three-story central bay and linear ornamentation, Frost Mill Lodge owes a debt to the forward-looking English architect John Soane. Far more restrained than the Long Island estates built in the preceding decades, this house epitomizes the North Shore style of the Roaring Twenties. Seen here are the rear façade (top left), the front façade (far left) and the overgrown rear gardens prior to restoration.

deadline—and that the near-century-old house would end up looking “very 2017.” Selecting items was relatively easy, says Keith Murphy, because the Glen Cove showroom is always chock-full of merchandise in many styles and colorways. Once the selections were made, the heavy lifting and loading began. Safavieh has people—and trucks—for that. The living room alone required two dozen pieces of furniture, several dozen accessories, about a dozen lamps, some massive mirrors and framed canvasses, and a mansion-size antique Kashan rug. All told, this one room, which measures a commodious 1,100-plus square feet, absorbed about 100 separate pieces. As you can see from the pictures on these pages, the furnished room appears airy and uncluttered, exactly as its designers intended. The same goes for the rest of Frost Mill Lodge. When the Safavieh delivery trucks departed and the designers breathed a sigh of relief, having answered their boss’s throw-down with aplomb, they cast their eyes on a transformed Frost Mill Lodge—a modern mansion fit for a new jazz age. And they had accomplished it all in 48 hours.
Seen through double mahogany doors (left), the dining room is a serene environment for entertaining. Here the ceiling gets its due (above): Gold vegetation was hand painted on a dark ground, creating a magical canopy for dining after dark. The room was designed by Karin Krinsky for Safavieh.

The scenario might have intimidated some designers: Here was a client whose background was in manufacturing packaged health foods. He had built factories compliant with innumerable FDA regulations, and now he and his wife were ready to build a home in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Would they be perfectionists, difficult to satisfy? “Perfectionists, yes, but the good kind!” says interior designer Faith Hochman. “They’re detail oriented and decisive, which made my job easy.” The homeowners’ brief was to create an airy, light-filled home for entertaining, and Hochman delivered. While the space appears as pristine as a high-tech factory, the look is by no means austere. Plush upholstered pieces from Safavieh beckon guests to sit and relax, while modern light fixtures with dimmed Edison bulbs lend warmth.

Remember mood rings? This home has a mood fireplace: A low river of gas flame dances on a bed of glass stones, which at the touch of a remote control can be made to glow fuschia, blue, yellow or other colors to match the mood of the evening. Another dramatic touch is the swimming pool. The site of the house was steeply sloped, and that presented a unique opportunity to bring the outdoors in. The terraced pool has an infinity edge that faces the house, providing an eye-level “waterfall view” from the living room—a long line of water that serves as a counterpoint to the fireplace’s long line of flame. Free of clutter and with an open plan that flows easily from room to room (and from patio to interior), the home could easily accommodate 100 guests for a warm-weather party.
In the dining room (above), the linear sweep of the table is matched by a contemporary chandelier and a tray of crystal decanters. The living room (opposite) is a soft study of whites and grays. A dramatic accent of strong color can be added to the fireplace at the push of a button. Previous page, a seating area of four swivel chairs, with the kitchen seen in the background, shows off the open-flow plan.

To lend formality and structure to a garden, nothing beats a boxwood hedge. And formal hedges needn’t be boring, as these views illustrate.

Left to its own devices, a boxwood tree can become quite monumental. There’s one in Belgium that stands 24 feet tall, and one in Turkey with a girth of more than six feet. But the greatest virtue of Buxus sempervirens is its willingness to be subdued. Shorn often, a boxwood tree can be kept, bonsai-like, as compact as you like. And it can be trained into most any shape, all the while retaining a dense, lush surface of evergreen leaves, which is why boxwood has been the plant of choice since the Renaissance for creating garden hedges. Hundreds of individual box trees can be grown together and clipped into a twisting knot garden, creating the visual impression of a single, continuous, spectacular plant just inches high. Whether trained into precise rectangles or sinuous curves, boxwood hedges have no substitute for lending formality and structure—not to mention winter interest—to the garden. A typical aesthetic use of box hedges is to form living borders or containers for other plantings. Within an enclosure of boxwood, garden designers (and cooks) like to plant herbs and other perennials. In the foreground of the picture below, drifts of catmint fill the space inside the hedge. On the previous spread, at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions, silvery sage is fairly bursting forth from boxwood borders. This practice has provided the yin and yang of European-style gardening for hundreds of years: The formality of boxwood borders is softened by blousy, billowing herbs and flowering perennials. It’s a timeless look, and with care, such a garden can be almost literally timeless. Visit Gunston Hall, the home of George Mason in Fairfax County, Virginia, and you’ll see the same boxwood hedges that the Founding Father planted more than 250 years ago. These specimens are practically adolescent compared to the boxwood in the Place Pierre Corneille in Maucomble, France, which were planted circa 1453. Oh, and there’s one more benefit of box hedges for garden-minded residents of the Northeast U.S.: Boxwood is utterly deer resistant. The critters can’t stand the taste of it, so there’s no need to worry about unauthorized nighttime shearing of the hedges. Boxwood hedges lend structure and year-round visual interest to gardens. The hedges can be inter-planted with herbs, as seen in these views, to soften the manicured formality.

The easternmost point of land in New York, Montauk is a maker of memories. It was here that The Rolling Stones began writing “Memory Motel,” one of their most evocative ballads, while staying with Andy Warhol in 1975. Montauk is key to the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” which explores the nature of memory and romantic love. “Meet me in Montauk,” says Clementine to Joel in a dream, planting the seed that eventually draws the couple back together at the tip of Long Island. The owners of the new house shown here can relate. The wife was 4 years old during her first Montauk summer. When she started dating her husband more than 30 years ago, she proudly brought him east to experience the magical place that kept drawing her back. Although his introduction was on a cold, rainy day, the couple has spent time in Montauk practically every year since then. Recently they completed a new house there, a decade-long labor of love that began when they acquired a special parcel of land in 2007. Set on a hill above the beach, the lot offers superb views of the crashing surf below and sweeping views of the Atlantic coastline. Looking east, one can see all the way to Ditch Plains, a distance of several miles. In designing a traditional Hamptons beach house, the couple and their archi-

tect, the late Tom Issing, sought to do justice to the ocean views and the rambling Shingle Style, despite being constrained by a tight building envelope on a scant-acre lot. When the zoning law changed midway through the design process and the footprint needed to get even tighter, major modifications were needed. “There was so much detail involved, in time we ended up with a stack of revised plans three feet high,” recalls the owner. Other key players on the project were Artisans Home Builders of Rowayton, Connecticut, and designer Ron Marshall. The same attention to detail that went into Issing’s architecture was lavished by Marshall on the interiors. Example: For the entrance hall, he sketched a geometric stone mosaic that evokes the rolling surf, and then scoured the East End for a source that could craft the mosaic by hand. Marshall’s trademark style, fully realized in this home, is to mix a few antiques and personal mementoes with new, transitional pieces, nearly all of which came from Safavieh. The effect is a rich, heritage feel that’s also fully up to date—the perfect environment for preserving old memories and making new ones. The afternoon light casts moody shadows in the master bedroom. Beyond the double-sided fireplace is a sunken office-cum-sitting room. The window niche at right houses a settee for reading.

Think of a Manhattan apartment with a Central Park view, and chances are you picture looking down from a high floor in The Plaza, The Dakota or some other iconic address. But farther uptown, the views become decidedly more intimate—especially on the West Side, as the avenue narrows and the buildings shrink in size. Consider the apartment shown here. Tucked in a renovated prewar building at Central Park West and 108th Street, this home looks out on a wall of greenery, which almost creates the illusion of a country setting. Tall windows and multiple exposures flood the space with sunlight, enhancing the sense of closeness to nature. These prized qualities called for a light design touch. To tie the interior to the outdoors, Luis E. Hill, a designer based in Safavieh’s Broadway, Manhattan store, placed large mirrors, houseplants and abstract paintings that contain a lot of green. The home lacked a fireplace, so Hill created the visual equivalent of a hearth: He selected a console table with a face that looks like stone masonry, centered the console on a wall, and topped the “mantel” with a symmetrical arrangement of tree-trunk-patterned lamps and artwork. This tableau anchors the main living space without detracting from the lush park views.
The views of Central Park woodland are so lush and so close that this Manhattan apartment gives one the sense of being in the country. Safavieh designer Luis E. Hill reinforced the vistas by using large mirrors and abstract paintings that contain plenty of green. Houseplants and bowls of green apples also help to tie the interiors to nature. A patterned console topped with tree-form lamps and artwork (above) functions visually as a hearth—without detracting from the forest.

There are bigger yachts—the hundred-meter-long showstoppers one sees docked in Newport, Palm Beach and Cannes. But meter for meter, it’s hard to improve on a smaller Princess Yacht for style, elegance, spaciousness and, in the case of newer makes, sophisticated electronics and mechanical systems. The number you see here, a Princess 98 Flybridge Motor Yacht docked on Long Island’s North Shore, is a stellar example. She’s owned by the same couple that built a grand new house on the grounds of Meudon, the old Guthrie estate overlooking the Sound (see Safavieh Style, fall/winter 2016). And like their house, the boat was styled by Safavieh. In the U.S., the Princess make is a unique partnership between Princess Yachts International of Plymouth, England and Princess Yachts America (formerly known as Viking Sport Cruisers). The value of the partnership is to offer bespoke European vessels built to U.S. specifications, making the boats easy to maintain and
106
service on these shores. The English side of Princess is a vertically integrated company with about 2,500 workers, who are capable of making most componentry in-house—a rarity among yacht builders. A craft built in the Plymouth yard is tested in the famously uncertain waters of the English Channel before being shipped to the U.S. Once stateside, the yacht undergoes further fitting and sea trials, so by the time it’s delivered to its owners, everything is, well, ship shape. The yacht shown here was a model, first seen by its owners at an American broker, and they regarded its configuration as perfect. Seeing no need to bespeak a boat from scratch, they took delivery on the model. Although based on Long Island Sound, this yacht has, in a short time, plied the entire Eastern Seaboard. From Kennebunkport, Maine, to the Exumas in the Bahamas, its owners have enjoyed cruising in unparalleled comfort and style.

The resin-infused structure of Princess Yachts allows for larger interior volumes and more headroom. The owners’ stateroom (left) spans the full width of the hull, bringing seascape views on both sides. Top, the flying bridge, here looking aft, provides ample space for socializing in the sun. Seen in profile (above), the fylbridge yacht displays its distinctive European styling.

SAFAVIEH HAPPENINGS
At Safavieh, we love to celebrate. Happily, we’ve had many reasons to do so in recent months. First up: A holiday party with co-workers gave us the opportunity to relax, enjoy each other’s company, reminisce about a wonderful year and look forward to the next one. Following that we hosted a preview party at the Glen Cove store (below) for our new Phantom Collection, which is inspired by the glorious ArtDeco style of 1930s New York. Guests included executives from Selva, our design partner in Italy and the collection’s maker. Another party (facing page) celebrated Cynthia Rowley’s collection for Hooker Furniture, which the fashion and home-lifestyle designer describes as “classics with a twist.” Cynthia and representatives from Hooker joined us at our Broadway, Manhattan store to mark the occasion and mingled with interior designers, customers and friends.

THE LAST WORD WITH...
Cynthia Rowley The sporty fashion and furniture designer has a vision for your home. Cynthia, you’ve broadened your design business from fashion to lifestyle. How would you describe the Cynthia Rowley customer? She’s fun and full of life. She loves to be adventurous and try new things. The home collection you’ve designed for Hooker Furniture has three distinct “personas”—Curious, Sporty and Pretty. Do these reflect different aspects of your own personality? That’s definitely what I aspire to! I try to incorporate these attributes into all aspects of design—from fashion to accessories to home décor. Do items from the three personas mix well in a room? They definitely are meant to be mixed in a room, the way you do with your wardrobe. This is what makes a room exciting, unexpected and individual. All of the pieces you’ve designed are vehicles for transforming a home environment. What kinds of spaces do you hope people will create in their homes? Sometimes it’s hard to be daring with décor because it’s difficult
112
to imagine what things will look like together in a room. But my philosophy is: If you buy things you really love, they’ll all work together. What’s better than coming home at the end of the day to a space you really love? Complete this sentence: The most important element in a room is… …personal style and an overarching vision for what the room should look like. Without going overboard, a little bit of a theme or a color story can keep things cohesive. Should rooms be fun? Yes, 150 percent! I like pieces that are fun, beautiful and functional. What’s your pet peeve in home décor? Beige. Before you got your start in fashion design, you aspired to be a painter. Clearly you see the world with a painterly eye. Does your training as a painter inform the process of designing? It’s all the same to me. The creative process transcends the context.
With your love of surfing and swimming, it’s clear that water exerts a pull in your life. Does the water influence your designs? Being in the water is where I find my happy place. Having this as a part of my life definitely inspires me. From what else do you draw inspiration as a designer? Anything and everything. Travel and some death-defying adventures always get me going. Check out my latest excursion on our social media @CynthiaRowley What are your favorite travel destinations? I don’t usually like to go places twice, unless it’s my beloved Montauk, so the list is always growing. To name a few, Bhutan, Iceland, anywhere in Africa, Cuba, Tobago, Costa Rica, Peru…. Where haven’t you traveled yet that you’re itching to see? I’m trying to tick off all the seven wonders of the world. There are seven natural, seven ancient and seven modern—oh, and Stevie Wonder ;). It may take me a while, but I’m determined.
Come summer, designer and surfer Cynthia Rowley can be found on the beaches of Montauk, New York. Not surprisingly, her interior designs have an adventurous quality. In the spirited home office (top left), a shaggy-seated Swanson side chair cozies up to a Fleur de Glee writing desk, which is finished in Rowley’s signature floral print. The living room (top right) shows a sporty Varick chaise and love seat flanked by a Horizon Line accent table. In a pretty bedroom setting (above middle), a gilt and velvet-upholstered king bed takes center stage. The front feet of the En Pointe arm chair (above) are a witty visual reference to ballet.
