SMALL HOME LIVING

COASTAL ILLUSION Classic blue-and-white décor, accented by pops of green and burnished metals, brings good cheer to a small city apartment. INTERIOR DESIGN BY

Denyse and Missy Rinfret PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Peter Rymwid TEXT BY

Darius Amos

38

Many older New York City apartments, cramped and light-starved, present a challenge to designers. Sometimes the best solution is to treat these spaces almost as theatrical sets, imposing a cheery theme to brighten the atmosphere. That’s the approach taken by the mother-daughter design team of Denyse and Missy Rinfret, who brought their Connecticut coastal style to this Lower West Side apartment. The finished space looks like it might overlook the Long Island Sound, even if one of the windows faces nothing but a brick wall. Blue-and-white abounds here in gingham, ticking stripes, chinoiserie, trellis work, leopard print—accented by pops of green. It’s a classic color combination, made all the more casual and coastal by the Rinfrets’ devil-may-care mixing of patterns. (You can count five fabric patterns on the bed alone.) They modernized

this palette by adding burnished gold and silver, which also help to lighten the mood. Walls were left plain white, with the exception of the entrance hall. Strongly patterned wallpaper is a tried-and-true solution in tiny rooms and tight passages, adding visual interest that somehow distracts the eye from the dimensions of the space. Here the Rinfrets employed wallpaper with a blue geometric grid on a white ground, which magically lends structure and depth to an otherwise ordinary entrway. Mirrors, of course, are yet another means of making small spaces appear larger and dark spaces appear lighter. In the narrow master bedroom, mirrored surfaces are used high and low, on the furniture as well as on the walls. They contribute a lot to the pleasing illusion that green space and blue water are just steps away.

For a small town, Spring Lake, New Jersey, has an unusual number of nicknames: the Town by the Sea (which somehow earned a trademark), the Jewel of the Jersey Shore and the Irish Riviera, a reference to the many residents of Anglo-Irish descent. During the Gilded Age, Spring Lake was like a miniature Newport or Bar Harbor, attracting society families from New York and Philadelphia. Almost all of their mansion-size “cottages” long ago disappeared, but they’ve been replaced by equally gracious homes, many in the Shingle style of the originals. Whether in the quaint village center or on tree-lined residential blocks, so much care has been taken to preserve the historical look of things that it can be difficult to tell the age of buildings in Spring Lake. Consider the house you see here. It was built in 2002 to fit in with the earlier homes on its street.

Looking much like an original Spring Lake cottage from the Gilded Age, this house was constructed in the early 21st century and extensively renovated in recent years. The front façade retains the perfect historical context for its neighborhood. The rear of the house has been fitted with porches, patios and pools to allow outdoor entertaining on a grand scale.

In 2016 and 2017, the house was extensively remodeled— and now it fits in even better. While the new homeowners insisted on traditional architecture throughout, they chose to furnish the interiors in up-to-date style, a transitional hybrid of classic and contemporary. Designer Karin Krinsky of Safavieh, who handled the project, sought to achieve an unfussy beach house vibe. The old formal dining room, for example, was furnished with an unadorned table and sideboard in Canadian birch with a gray finish. Atop the sideboard is a casual tableau of framed pictures and sculptural pieces. In the family room, an end wall is dominated by a fireplace with a massive limestone lintel, which looks both modern and ancient. A side table of petrified wood (which Krinsky says weighs a good 500 pounds), neutral, unpatterned fabrics and wood finishes complete the relaxed, natural look. Although the family room is perfect for a party, the social hub of this house is the lower level, with its commercial-size bar, pool table and sprawling sectional seating. New oak cabinetry and millwork, made to look more than a century old, anchors the space in the past— making it, as Krinsky says, “very Spring Lake.”

This page, above: The social hub of this home is the finished lower level, an architecturally modern space whose oak built-ins reference Spring Lake’s past. Each of the family’s five daughters has a bedroom, and each is furnished uniquely. At right: A graceful upholstered sleigh bed is topped with a pretty embroidered coverlet. Opposite page: The large formal dining room has been furnished casually, reflecting the relaxed nature of beach-house living. A simple gray sideboard is home to an informal tableau of art and accessories.

Gordon chose furniture that’s “witty, sculptural and a design bridge between the last century and this one—much like my client’s art.” When a young Manhattan couple relocated from the Upper East Side to Chelsea, they started with a blank canvas—an apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows and a southern exposure, guaranteeing plenty of natural light. They decided to bring almost nothing over from their old home, furnishing the new one truly from scratch. Step one was to purchase several bold pieces of contemporary art from a favorite gallery in Miami. In a wall composition by Steven Gagnon, we see the silhouette of a vintage pinup girl rendered as a cutout in an aluminum box. Within its margins, inches beneath the surface plane, is a tangled mass of women’s shoes—stiletto pumps, mostly—coated in green metallic automotive paint. The companion to this sculpture is a large painting by Kaï, in which the familiar stencil logos of a Louis Vuitton handbag cover the canvas in bright colors on a black background. Atop the whole floats a ghostly message, “Lost Values.” One could spend hours a day contemplating the layered ironies of these artworks, while sitting on…what? The homeowners’ next step was to enlist Lorraine Gordon, a designer at

Every piece in this living room rewards the eye with closer inspection. Case in point: the beveled front corners of the velvetcovered sofa. The finish of the Baker coffee table was custom designed by Lorraine Gordon. Glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly are displayed on the shelves. The sculpture of a Hermès bag is by Jonathan Seliger. Above, the new apartment building forms a quadrangle with the 19th century neogothic residence halls of General Theological Seminary. The gardens of the “close,” as the courtyard is called, have been famous for more than a century.

“Lost Values,” a painting by Kaï, casts a spell in the dining area. Designer Lorraine Gordon used furniture with white details throughout the home, including the dining table at left with its sculptural base and the console below with its textured front panels.

Safavieh’s Broadway, New York store, to create living spaces in a way that favored the art. She left all the walls white, as in a gallery. Some of the furniture is white, too. “I really admire the white lacquered pieces in Jean-Louis Deniot’s collection for Baker Furniture,” she says. “They’re witty, sculptural and a design bridge between the last century and this one—much like my client’s art.” Gordon used other Deniot pieces extensively in this apartment, including antiqued gold lamps and seating upholstered in soft gray velvet. Plump pillows, books, flowers and other accessories of daily living contribute to an overall effect that is at once casual and refined. The artwork here may be a bit edgy, but the home is entirely comfortable and serene.

Kristy Fall has a knack for accomplishing whatever she sets her mind to. While still a senior in college, she started work in investment banking at Lazard Frères. Later, as a young mother, she discovered an inborn flair for interior design and joined her mother, Marilyn Gillio, to form K&M Interior Designs. When Fall remarried recently, she and her husband decided to keep both of their homes—his in Manhattan and hers in River Vale, New Jersey. Fall quickly set out to redo hers, making room for stepchildren and creating vibrant new living spaces for her blended family. The previous spread shows the Fall house in transition. In the newly minted entrance hall, marble, agate, crystal and other light-toned materials lend a welcoming, contemporary feel. Through French doors to the left of the hall, one can glimpse an eccentric vestige of the previous owner—an English pub room complete with long bar, which is on Fall’s short list to be redecorated. But first things first: Along with kids’ rooms, entrance hall and kitchen, she tackled the living room, seen here. Fall designed the coffee table herself, making it oversized to serve as an anchor in the high-ceilinged space and tie together the seating groups. Despite its large size, delicate lines prevent it from overpowering. Nearly everything else in the room is from Safavieh’s Paramus store, where Fall shops regularly, working with staff designer Michele Townsend. “As a designer myself,” says Fall, “I find it super-efficient to work with Safavieh. They have a tremendous inventory, and anything that’s not in stock or I need custom made, they can handle.” Because even designers can use a helping hand.

A long, narrow living room presented a challenge for homeowner Kristy Fall, herself an interior designer. She placed bar stools behind a sofa table to maximize seating and designed an oversized coffee table (opposite) to tie together the club chairs and sofas. The coffee table base was fabricated by Craig West, and the custom window treatments are by Alan Schatzberg. Most of the other furnishings were acquired from Safavieh’s Paramus, New Jersey store, where Fall worked with staff designer Michele Townsend.

In a world where the term “luxury” seems to be losing its meaning, there are still a handful of hotels where it applies. Villa d’Este, dramatically set on the southwestern shore of Lake Como in northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is one. This remarkably youthful dowager has superb Renaissance architecture and a staff that rivals that of any other hotel in the world. What I find remarkable about Villa d’Este is that its history is deep and authentic, not recreated. It was built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio as his own residence, back in the days when the church had not only all of the power but all of the money as well. It changed private hands several times over the centuries, in 1873 becoming a hotel, a retreat for well-to-do Victorians. Hollywood came calling in 1925 in the person of a young Alfred Hitchcock, who made his first film, The Pleasure Garden, on its grounds. It’s an apt title for a place where I felt like a guest at a private villa, with a staff that anticipated my every need. I found Villa d’Este full of guests seeking old-world glamour, knowing they wouldn’t be bothered but assured that they would be artfully cared for. A veritable redoubt for the rich, it has the feel of old money—though not all the money here is old. Just this past August, both Bruce Springsteen and Robert DeNiro were in residence, and it’s not uncommon to spot the lake’s most famous residents, George and Amal Clooney, dining at The Grill. The interior is a riot of marble, lush fabrics and antique furniture, the hallways festooned with portraits and sculptures. The spacious guest rooms and their tall windows are edged with silk brocade drapes and have extraordinary lakeside views that also take in the 25 acres of gardens Villa d’Este is set on. This stage set, utilizing regal gold, royal blue and deep red, is complemented by acres of manicured gardens filled with azaleas, jasmine and succulents. CONTINUED

I would stroll the pebbled paths through the gardens in the morning, and then take an excursion on the lake, which is crisscrossed by ferries. I like the city of Como itself, a short distance away, mildly bustling and filled with shops and glimmers of Roman ruins, as well as one of the country’s most impressive cathedrals. But I love the smaller towns on the lake, places like Varenna, with its steep medieval stairs and the lovely garden of Villa Monastero. Each day, by the time the hot sun began to slide behind the mountains toward Switzerland, I was back at the hotel. Leisure is the major pursuit at Villa d’Este. There is a floating swimming pool in Lake Como, surrounded by deck chairs that always seem to be occupied by readers and avid sunbathers. In the evening, these same guests can be found in elegant dress on the terrace, which overlooks the lake and is served by tuxedoed waiters bearing aperitivos, olives and arancini while a pianist plays softly in the background. This nightly social gathering is de rigueur, the essence of your stay at Villa d’Este. You can dine off the property, but you probably won’t, with the Michelin-starred Veranda on the premises. I donned the requisite jacket and tie to sit in a regal blue and yellow room that overlooks the lake, dining on a classic Veal Milanese while enjoying what are arguably the best views of the water. The Grill is the more casual choice. You can play tennis or squash here, enjoy the gym or head for the spa. Frankly, I never did any of those things. Instead, I looked forward to a daily in-room breakfast with a lake view, the leisurely consumption of a novel and the chance to enjoy a lifestyle redolent of the 19th century. In my book, if the term “luxury” survives, this is pretty much its definition. This page, top: The lavish gardens of Villa Monastero hug the lakeside. Bottom: A floating swimming pool at Villa d’Este is a favorite of sun-worshipping guests. Opposite page: In the charming village of Como, winding streets snake down to the waterfront.

Waterfront Wedding At Lake Como, one of Italy’s most storied resort areas, love is writ larger than life. In a subtropical climate surrounded by chiseled mountains sits one of Europe’s deepest, bluest lakes. Its shores are dotted with centuries-old quaint towns and luxurious family villas that brim with the elegance of bygone eras. Since the early days of the Roman Empire, this lake has attracted poets, philosophers, cardinals, royalty (actual and Hollywood) and lovers. The area is so undeniably romantic that Hungarian composer Franz Liszt once famously declared: “When you write the story of two happy lovers, let the story be set on the banks of Lake Como.” Recently, two happy lovers—one hailing from Dubai the other from Lebanon—chose the renowned lakefront Villa Il Balbiano for their wedding celebration and shared some of their favorite photos with Safavieh Style. Wedding guests stayed at Villa d’Este, profiled on the previous pages.

LIGHT AS AIR In this compact row house, every floor— even the lower level— feels open and inviting. Melissa Sarhane PHOTOGRAPHY BY Peter Rymwid TEXT BY Mark Dowden INTERIOR DESIGN BY

To make the most of space, Safavieh designer Melissa Sarhane and homeowner Nikki Djekovic carefully chose every detail in this lower level suite. Note how a low, curved bench at the breakfast table keeps sight lines and pathways open.

Some people are serial decorators, never more happy than when they’re immersed in a project to improve their home. That description fits Nadire and Halil Djekovic— Nikki and Hal, as they call themselves—of Throggs Neck, a beachy neighborhood in the Bronx near the bridge of the same name. Readers of Safavieh Style may remember this house from the Fall 2016 issue, which featured, among other spaces, the glamorous dressing room that Nikki’s friends dubbed the “shoe museum.” When the master bedroom suite was finished, Nikki was left with a case of

decorator’s withdrawal. What was the next project she could undertake with Melissa Sarhane, her partner in design at Safavieh’s Hartsdale, New York store? It didn’t take long for the duo to get going on the home’s lower level, which opens to a backyard patio and thus has the advantage of natural light. Although it’s a relatively small space, they successfully carved out what could be an entire home, with kitchen, bath, dining and living areas. The palette was kept light and neutral. Palest gray ceramic tiles, modeled to look like wood planks, cover the floor, along with an ivory colored rug. Light gray stone sheaths the fireplace wall, and much of the furniture is either painted or upholstered in soft white. “By using pale surfaces and maximizing natural light,” explains Sarhane, “we ensured that visitors would have no sense of being in a subterranean space.” The result is just about the prettiest basement anywhere. And it goes to show, with imagination and some help from Safavieh, even a small home can be turned into a showplace. What’s next for the restless Djekovics? “We’ve redone every surface of this house,” says Nikki. “I love it, of course, but we may need to move to a bigger place!”

PACIFIC NOTION

Tranquility reigns in a Los Angeles house renovated by Barbara Barry. “Remodel heaven” is how Barbara Barry describes the house she redesigned in Pacific Palisades, California. The homeowners had chosen the property for its site—a large lot with an established garden, near the ocean, on which perched a badly designed dinosaur of a house with dark interiors and oversized rooms. Prescribing a total renovation, Barry stripped the house down to the studs and reconfigured rooms—even lowering ceilings—to create a more intimate scale. Windows were added or resized as needed to bathe the new space in natural light. In the end virtually every surface was touched, and yet the whole project was

completed in only nine months—an extraordinarily ambitious timetable. How was that speed possible? “The recipe for achieving a tight deadline is always to resolve all details before beginning construction,” Barry explains. “Design is all about the details, and detailed drawings defining each material transition, if thought through and resolved ahead, ensure seamless construction.” One of her techniques for achieving a unified aesthetic vision is to keep detailing consistent from room to room. “The same detailing throughout makes for a cohesive experience—and a calming one,” she notes. For this project, she designed ivory-painted panels as a recurring element. Subtle grass cloth wall coverings in pale colors like faded eucalyptus and soft caramels set off the painted panels and add subtle textures. The palette was inspired by a Mexican fig tree in the interior courtyard. “My favorite thing about this house is how it wraps around that huge tree,” says Barry. By playing off the colors in the tree’s paint-bynumbers bark, she honored the homeowners’ desire for a house where parties could flow effortlessly from indoors to outdoors. And more than that, she achieved a dreamlike, natural tranquility that suffuses every interior space.

80

Subdued, natural and luxurious are the words to describe the master bedroom. From the honed limestone fireplace surround to the floor-toceiling wool drapes, the details are minimalist but of the highest quality.

DREAM SUITES Amenities such as housekeeping, pet-walking and shoe shines are an obvious reason buyers are attracted to the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills. But aesthetics are also a big part of the draw: Think high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and preternaturally good sound proofing. Now RXR Realty, developer of the Ritz-Carlton property in North Hills, is sweetening the deal by offering a major aesthetic inducement: New homebuyers can have their suites custom designed and furnished by Safavieh. To help prospective buyers experience the alchemy that two leading brand names, Ritz-Carlton and Safavieh, can bring to a private home, Safavieh has furnished three Ritz-Carlton penthouse models in three different styles. In its many shades, no color in decorating is more versatile than white. Here designer Keith Murphy has used the proverbial all-white color scheme to evoke the glamour of Old Hollywood. You might expect Jean Harlow, dressed in white, of course, to come sashaying into the living room at any moment, cocktail shaker in hand. Yet for all its powerful aura of celluloid glamour, there’s nothing oppressive or self-conscious about these interiors in the RitzCarlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills. And truth be told, all-white interiors exist only in the movies. Along with white upholstery, rugs, drapes and cabinets, here we also see lots of burnished gold— and frankly, gold is a big part of Murphy’s successful recipe in this space—plus silver, transparent crystal, dark brown floors, dark gray marble, apple green in the kitchen and so forth. Here white is simply a backdrop, albeit a glamorous one, for the colorful tapestry of everyday living.

Blue can evoke the sea or sky—or both, as in designer Karin Krinsky’s sumptuous suite at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills. Here she uses blue as an accent color amid billows of silver, gray and white, creating serene spaces that beckon one to relax. The dining area is a star of this stage, with its long cascading drapes and chairs upholstered in the strongest saturated blue velvet, punctuated by silver nail-head trim. A shimmering bar cart nearby, this is the perfect spot for evening entertaining. The other rooms in this suite suggest Art Deco— note the graphic fire screen in the living room and the Machinist style of the end table. One could almost imagine oneself on a Cunard liner, steaming toward Le Havre or Southampton, were it not for the high ceilings and enormous size of the windows and French doors. Safavieh designers Joe Murphy and Iris Carias collaborated to infuse these private rooms with the same understated luxury as in the lobby areas and hallways. In the living room, neat geometric patterns in floor-to-ceiling drapes and rugs add subtle visual interest, as do hand-thrown pots and contemporary prints. The new members’ bar of the Brookville Country Club, renovated and furnished by Safavieh, features an unobstructed, wraparound view of the golf course.

Samuel Johnson, the great lexicographer, spoke of men being “clubbable”—the engaging sort of companions he’d want to hang out with. The same thinking could be applied to the premises of clubs themselves: Are they “memberable”—nice enough spaces for the members to hang out in? Whether it belongs to a city club or a country club, every clubhouse needs to be given new life from time to time in order to be worthy of its membership. With so many New York area clubs having passed the century mark, Safavieh has developed a subspecialty in clubhouse design. An example of its work is shown here, in the remodeled Brookville Country Club on Long Island’s North Shore. “We have a couple of litmus tests for the redesign of clubs,” explains Michael Yaraghi, CEO of Savafieh Home Furnishings. “One is that the new club interiors should be up

to the current design standard of a fine resort hotel, such as a Ritz-Carlton. The second is that the interiors should be as nice as a typical member’s home. When you think of it, the clubhouse is really a second home for many families who spend so much of their leisure there. So the décor should be comfortable, the ambience should be welcoming, and the quality of the furnishings should be high.” Safavieh also plays a role in architectural remodeling. Many older country clubhouses have small windows and are relatively dark. That’s a shame, especially when the member dining room and 19th hole bar face the golf course, where so much of the interest is. Says Yaraghi, “Club members really appreciate having enlarged windows, bringing the action on the golf course into full view. We’re always looking to reflect the sporting activities of the club in our designs.”

104

Because most country clubs are family oriented, the trend in clubhouse design is to create comfortable gathering spaces that reflect the light-filled look of today’s best homes. These views of the Brookville Country Club, newly renovated by Safavieh, show communal rooms designed to please both genders and all ages.

GOING SOUTH...

South Africa, that is, where you might not expect to find such splendid pinot noirs. TEXT BY Josh Sens

In recent decades, as oenophiles awakened to emergent wine regions around the world, South Africa remained largely out of sight and mind. Blame politics and people’s preconceptions. The country’s Apartheid-era isolation didn’t help. But even after the boycotts ended, South African vintners faced stiff competition from a global market that paid their labels relatively scant attention. Asked for impressions of South African wine, outsiders were apt to mention Stellenbosch, the heatbaked region outside Cape Town that has staked its claim with such sun-worshipping varietals as granache and cabernet sauvignon—if they knew to mention anything at all. But as with so much else in South Africa, the country’s winemaking reputation has changed. It is now seen as a hotspot for pinot noir. Actually, cool place is more like it. At first blush, that might sound unlikely. Pinot noir, after all, is a notoriously temperamental grape that performs most willingly in cool-climate settings like Burgundy, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the fog-blanketed Sonoma Coast. It can stand some heat but doesn’t tolerate relentlessly high temperatures, and South Africa, of course, gets a ton of sun. Yet the country is also home to

micro-climates with just the sort of traits that pinot noir prefers. Consider the appellation called the Cape South Coast, which stretches southeast of Cape Town over rolling terrain, close to the Atlantic Ocean, covering a collection of grape-growing wards and districts including Elgin Valley, Walker Bay and Hemel en Aarde. The soil here, rich in clay and shale, is primo for pinot, and so are the climatic conditions, freshened by the ocean’s kiss. More than 60 wineries operate around the Cape South Coast. Many are small and family-run, and the finest of them share in the conviction that the smartest way to treat pinot noir is pretty much to get out of its way. “When you are harvesting quality fruit, it’s not necessary to manipulate the wine,” says Jean-Claude (JC) Martin, head winemaker at South Cape Coast winery Creation Wines. “What you do instead is guide it gently through the process so as to preserve the sense of place.” Like many winemakers, Martin recognizes pinot noir as “the heartbreak grape,” a nod to its fragility and beauty. But he loves it fearlessly. Born in Switzerland, he first fell for the varietal in his late teens while working his family’s vineyards on the slopes of Lake Bienne. In 2002, he and wife Carolyn, a native of South Africa, purchased the land where their

winery now sits, on Hemel en Aarde Ridge, transforming what had been a sheep farm into a happy place for pinot noir. Creation’s vineyard grows at nearly 1,000 feet above sea level, less than 10 miles from the Atlantic. A combination of the clay soil and the ocean’s cooling influence gives rise to elegant wines that favor bright fruit flavors and fresh acidity over weighty oak and tiresome tannins. “That’s what we think pinot noir should be,” Carolyn Martin says. “Age-worthy wines that pair wonderfully with food.” Pinot noir of similarly splendid subtlety and structure can be found at respected estates throughout the South Cape Coast. They include venerable properties like Botanica and its Elgin Valley neighbor, Boschendal, a winery whose roots reach back to 1685, as well as relative newcomers like Stellar Winery, whose delicate, fruitforward River’s End pinot noir is made with organic grapes. Stellar released its first wines in 2003, one year after JC and Carolyn Martin established Creation. At the time, South African pinot noir flew largely under the radar. But those were the old days. The world is changing quickly. And one of the truths of our brave new age is that undiscovered wine regions don’t remain that way for long.

TASTING NOTES CREATION ESTATE 2013 PINOT NOIR, $30 This balanced, elegant pinot noir opens with bright berry notes and gives way to a clean, refreshing finish. It marries beautifully with mild fish and poultry. BOSCHENDAL ELGIN 2014 PINOT NOIR, $35 A complexly structured wine, this pinot noir has hints of cranberry and red cherry on the nose and notes of clove and spiced oak on the palate. It’s a wonderfully foodfriendly wine. BOTANICA MARY DELANY COLLECTION 2013 PINOT NOIR, $25 Starting with crisp acidity and refreshing berry notes, this delicate pinot noir shows a feisty character with a bright and spicy finish. It has slight undercurrents of the oak in which it is aged. Try it with roast chicken or shellfish. STELLAR WINERY, 2014 RIVER’S END PINOT NOIR, $14 On the nose, this organic wine gives off woodsy hints, almost like a morning walk through a dewy forest. But given time to open, it becomes a medley of blackberries and ripe cherry, with just enough tannins for a dry and elegant finish.

Clockwise from top: Founded in 1685, the picturesque Boschendal is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. Ginny Poval, Botanica’s winemaker, is a self-taught American who relocated to South Africa and planted her first vineyard there in 2009. Take a sip of Creation’s Pinot Noir and you may detect red berry aromas, elegant vanilla and a whiff of wood spice. Botanica’s vineyards, where grapes for The Mary Delany Collection are grown. Visitors are treated to dramatic mountain views at Boschendal. Boschendal’s Elgin Pinot Noir comes from one of the highest planted vineyard sites in the Elgin Valley.

THE LAST WORD WITH...

Influenced by classicism yet resolutely modern, the Mary McDonald room setting above features furniture she designed for Chaddock Home. At left, a Soanian display of architectural fragments provides a classical context for her Marais dresser in Storm Gray. Below, McDonald’s Celia Demilune chest in Cerused Ebony finish would make a perfect cocktail station. All pictured furniture is available from Safavieh.

Mary McDonald

“Fun and fearless” describes this designer and the spaces she creates. Mary, describe your aesthetic. Whimsical classicism. You don’t shrink from using strong colors in the rooms you design. How would you sum up your theory of color in home décor? Color defines the emotional tone of a space. They key is to commit to hues you love with a common overall thread in mind. This means you must make choices. A home should read like a visually fluid book. Rooms are chapters we walk through. Color casts mood and emotion. What are some of your current favorite colors? I really love all colors depending on context and application, but if I must choose, right now, I am drawn to eggplant, Prussian blue and vibrant pink. Clearly you’re influenced by classicism but not ruled by it. There’s a lively tension between formality and fun in many of your spaces. How do you think about a basic principle, symmetry, when designing a room? Symmetry is a great classic go-to for balance in a floor plan, but not always a must. For something more unexpected, I might switch it up and create a floating seating group, for example, angled a bit with not a thing in pairs.

112

Then I’d add a pair of bookcases, pedestals or urns quietly at room ends. This suggests balance, and creates a lovely tension with the asymmetrical seating group. Now, having said this, at the end of the day, I love a good pair of anything. I hope when the time comes, I have two headstones that read, “She had to have the pair.” You’ve designed furniture for Chaddock Home—and you’ve designed lighting, fabrics, rugs and other elements of home décor. How does the creative process of designing objects differ from the process of designing rooms? Designing a room is a matter of artfully assembling objects, furniture, color and texture. The totality of the room is the creation. Product design begins with no existing parts. It’s more intensive, rather like a recipe with three sub-recipes before you get to the final main-dish creation. Designing products is a chance to be more imaginative, more creative. What are your pet peeves in décor? The nightmare of too many patterned, laser-cut metal pieces amok in one space. Complete this sentence: The most gorgeous room I ever saw was…

One? My list could go off the page! Nancy Lancaster’s Yellow Room, Bill Blass’ New York apartment by Macy’s, and Hubert de Givenchy’s Green Paris drawing room are all to die for. And complete this one: You can never have too many... Shoes. What’s a common decorating fear that you’d like to erase? The fear that you won’t fit in. A fearful client may respond to strong but stylish and outside-the-box ideas with, “Do people do that?” Well, yes, I say. We are people and we are doing it! Is there something that has no place in one of your rooms? Colored fake fur. You get to host lunch for three chic women. They can be alive or dead. Who are they? Well, the chic requirement eliminates a big lineup of really interesting and talented—but not necessarily chic— women, so I’ll host Diana Vreeland, Joséphine de Beauharnais and Daphne Guinness.

If you could be a figure from history, who would you be? Marie Antoinette for the dress only, and Cleopatra for everything else. What’s a current design trend you like? Rock crystal and natural stone used in multiple applications. And of what do you say, “Enough already!” Uncontrollable and unedited brass, but not brass itself. What’s the next big thing to cross off your bucket list? Bhutan and an African safari.
