Since 1899
LETTER FROM THE DIXONS
It is very surreal to recognize that the store is celebrating 125 years of serving the Greater Milwaukee area (and beyond). More importantly, it is humbling and special that we have been thought of when generations of families wish to celebrate a special anniversary, birthday, promotion, birth of a child, illnesses in remission, memories of the dearly departed or quite simply another day. That said, we remind ourselves that when someone has taken the time out of their very busy lives, perhaps away from their job or family, to visit our store may have significant meaning (or it should be assumed). This helps bring a sense of trust, duty and attention to the finer details. We want to
make sure that whatever the occasion may be, the jewelry of interest is of the upmost quality and the service that goes along with it exceeds expectations.
Now that we have settled into our newly remodeled store, we are focused on continuing our legacy. Part of this has been diving into the archives and recreating some of these gorgeous pieces as well as launching Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches.
Since 1899, we have strived to stay engaged with the community and to never sacrifice our commitment to outstanding quality and service, which has led us to prevail through the highs and lows of the past 125 years. These core tenets will remain unwavering for the next 125 years, and we look forward to helping you choose the perfect gift.

FOR WOMEN WHO LIVE ACTIVE LIVES
From the Black Bay to the Royal, TUDOR watches exude luxury for every lady.
Since the inception of TUDOR in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, TUDOR has offered watches with refined aesthetics and high technical qualities for women. The aim has always been to create elegant, unique and functional watches at the best possible value.
The current line encompasses a range of styles and aesthetics and value propositions. It starts with the iconic Black Bay. This watch is synonymous with everyday functionality, and it’s robust and reliable, capable of handling basic swimming and
divingexcursions. In 2022, TUDOR launched a revamped version of the Black Bay 31, 36, 39, and 41 S&G (steel and gold) models outfitted with a classy five-link bracelet, T-fit adjustable clasp and sporty 18K gold smooth bezel. This sophisticated, curved take on the iconic Black Bay provides a screw-down crown with waterproofness up to 100m, and the watches are outfitted with in-house, manufacturer calibers backed with a five-year international warranty. This line has examples that offer a beautiful look with a diamond bezel and diamond hour markers, for an extra-special touch. Available in champagne, black or silver dials. The following year, TUDOR released an all-steel version with blue, anthracite gray and a light Champagne dial.
Similarly in 2022, TUDOR unveiled the TUDOR Royal, the epitome of versatile sport-chic. The integrated bracelet, characterized by its three wide satin-brushed links set between two slimmer polished elements, are noticeably smooth to ensure comfort while wearing the watch. The distinct notched bezel harkens back to previous examples of sports watches TUDOR manufactured in the 1970s.
Available in 28mm, 34mm, 38mm and 41mm and a variety of dial options between the two different metal options (steel as well as steel and gold).
The 1926 line captures the essence of the brand: timeless, elegant and a nod to when Wilsdorf created the brand. This line provides exceptional value in the sense of it being 100m waterproof, automatic, 100 percent Swiss-made and highly accurate, backed by a five-year international manufacturer warranty. With a variety of dial options and metal compositions, as well as a bracelet or leather-strap option, this is a fantastic entry point into the world of TUDOR watches.

GRAND SEIKO’S MASTERPIECE OF PRECISION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Made by much more than mere artisans, the SLGW003 is an aesthetic tribute to both nature and time. And at its heart is the brand’s first manually wound movement in 50 years.
Grand Seiko’s SLGW003 is a celebration of time, embodying the spirit of Takumi—a dedication to perfection that transcends mere craftsmanship. At the heart of this timepiece lies the Caliber 9SA4, Grand Seiko’s first manually wound, 10-beat movement to be announced in more than 50 years. A true marvel of horology, this movement is designed to offer high precision and an experience that connects the wearer to the essence of time.
The SLGW003 is a dress watch that carries forward Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Style, rooted in the design principles established by the iconic
44GS in 1967. It features a case crafted from Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium, a material twice as hard as stainless steel and brighter, enhancing both durability and aesthetic appeal. The slim case, measuring 38.6mm in diameter and just 9.95mm thick, offers a refined elegance, making it suitable for any occasion.
One of the standout features of the SLGW003 is its textured dial, inspired by the bark of the white birch trees that can be found in the area around the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. More than a visual element, this dial embodies the connection between nature and time, a theme central to Grand Seiko’s design philosophy. Its intricate texture, in combination with the Zaratsu-polished surfaces of the case, creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow—a hallmark of Grand Seiko.
The Caliber 9SA4 movement inside the SLGW003 is a technical masterpiece. It offers an impressive 80-hour power reserve and incorporates several innovations that set it apart from other movements. The Dual Impulse Escapement, developed in-house by Grand Seiko, allows the movement to transfer energy more efficiently, contributing to its remarkable power reserve despite its high frequency of 36,000 vph. Additionally, the Grand Seiko Free-sprung Balance ensures en-
hanced SLGW003
detail of the SLGW003. The watch’s hour markers and hands are designed for optimal legibility, a crucial aspect of Grand Seiko’s approach to watchmaking. The markers are grooved and multi-faceted, catching the light from every angle, while the hands are meticulously polished to ensure clarity at a glance.
The movement’s design is as beautiful as it is functional. The click mechanism is inspired by the wagtail, a symbol of Morioka, a city close to the studio where the watch is made, adding a touch of nature to the engineering visible through the sapphire crystal case back. This mechanism enhances the tactile and aural experience of winding the watch and serves as a reminder of the artisans’ deep connection to the natural world around them.
The SLGW003 is more than a watch; it is a testament to Grand Seiko’s unwavering pursuit of the ideal timepiece. Every aspect, from its innovative movement to its elegant design, reflects the brand’s dedication to watchmaking, where precision, beauty and durability converge in perfect harmony.
A VOYAGE INTO THE WORLD OF ROLEX
Hans Wilsdorf was firmly convinced of a person’s ability to innovate and strive for excellence. More than 100 years after the creation of the brand, the founder’s philosophy is more present than ever, from the manufacturing of the company’s watches to its commitments worldwide.
Commitment to excellence
Since the beginning, the story of Rolex has been characterized by the quest for perfection and the ambition to push the boundaries of achievement.
At the turn of the 20th century, a visionary entrepreneur based in London was on the verge of success. His aim? To introduce the watchmaking world of the day to an as-yet-unknown dial signature: Rolex. A new name, invented in 1908, it would become one of the world’s most respected brands in the space of a few decades. As Hans Wilsdorf recounted in his memoirs of the early days of his company, the opposition he faced seemed insurmountable at first.
The entrepreneur started out with very little, but he did possess invaluable qualities: vision, perseverance and an extraordinary ability to work. An orphan at the age of 12, with nothing other than his determination to help him overcome challenges, Hans Wilsdorf went on to invent the world’s first waterproof self-winding wristwatch with a Perpetual rotor – a watch that has become a benchmark in terms of quality and prestige.
“Too complicated, too fragile, ill-adapted” – the wristwatch was met with scepticism. Yet, relying on his firmly held beliefs, Hans Wilsdorf managed to achieve his bold objective of establishing the Rolex watch – the Oyster Perpetual – as the archetype of the waterproof timepiece: precise, robust and able to withstand all conditions. But he was not simply a visionary who endowed Rolex watches with their fundamental technical and aesthetic characteristics. His constant quest for perfection was accompanied by a profound generosity and unshakeable faith in human potential.
Uniting expertise
An integrated and independent company, Rolex has manufacturing resources that encompass a wide range of skills and knowledge. Watchmakers, engineers, designers and other specialists work closely together from the design to the manufacturing of the
“The opposition I encountered seemed insuperable.”
watches. Rolex’s company culture is based above all on human values, which place both expertise and soft skills at the heart of the brand’s different activities.
Rolex is host to a variety of professions, brought to life by employees who are experts in their fields. The company has complete control over its essential components, from the casting of gold alloys to machining, finishing and assembly of the movement, case, dial and bracelet elements, as well as gem-setting. Its know-how is also made available right across the world thanks to an exceptional after-sales service network.
To ensure the brand’s expertise exists into the future, Rolex has its own unique Training Centre. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and the development of its employees, the centre, located in Geneva, provides training to employees and instructs apprentices. The company aims to pass on to younger generations its pride in its skills and mastery of its knowledge.
A watch unlike the rest
The Oyster Perpetual collection was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented and launched
in 1926. As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. Over the years, the Oyster became the proud bearer of many other innovations – such as self-winding by means of the Perpetual rotor (1931) – that defined the identity of the models in the collection and forged Rolex’s reputation for excellence, of which chronometric precision and reliability are among the cornerstones.
The Oyster gradually evolved into a collection of watches that integrated new functions and innovative technologies. All the models share fundamental features and a strong visual identity. Today the collection consists of 12 ranges, split into two categories: Classic watches such as the Datejust and the Day-Date, and Professional watches, including the Explorer and the GMT-Master II.
As the pioneer of the wristwatch, the company is at the origin of numerous major innovations in the watchmaking industry and has filed over 600 patents in the course of its history.
SINCE 1889
A dive into the 125-year-old history of Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers.
A TALE OF TWO FIRMS
The saga of Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers began November 6, 1899. A trio of men named Charles J. Kasten, Hans P. Alsted and G.E.G. Kuechle, worked for many years at Christian Preusser Jewelry Company, a firm established in Wisconsin in 1844. In the summer of 1899, the three gentlemen, who were first and second vice president and secretary, respectively, severed ties from the company, following the unexpected death of the “aged merchant.” They decided to go out and offer a “stock of fine diamonds, watches, novelties, artistic silverware, cut glass and fine stationary, such as has never before been attempted in Milwaukee and which will compare favorably with any exhibited in the East.” The trio formed Alsted-Kasten Company in November of 1899 on the corner of Milwaukee and Wisconsin streets in downtown Milwaukee.
Alsted-Kasten Jewelers quickly developed a reputation for displaying outstanding merchandise, among other interesting exhibitions, including a plaque relief of Mark Twain’s bust by John Marr,
father of famous painter Carl von Marr, and Commodore Perry relics from the centennial celebration. For over a quarter of a century, Alsted-Kasten Company built a reputation for prestige, quality, price and service. They sold everything from eyeglasses to sporting event tickets to fine silverware to stationery, in addition to the classic jewelry store staples of watches, diamonds and finished jewelry.
ALSTED-KASTEN CO.
William Schwanke, a watchmaker, began his operation in 1918, on Water Street in Milwaukee. In the spring of 1923, he moved the operation across the street from Alsted-Kasten, at 118 Wisconsin St. It was dubbed the “biggest little store” carrying a “complete line of diamonds, watches and jewelry.”
William Schwanke went on to become president of the Wisconsin Gem Society (Charles Kasten was vice president) and was one of the founding organizations in the American Gem Society; Alsted-Kasten later joined the AGS.

THE RIVALRY
As a result of the proximity, the two firms held a respectable and natural rivalry. Beyond the diamonds, watches and jewelry, the two firms intermingled among the movers and shakers of Milwaukee—fraternal societies, professional organizations and sponsored golf and bowling tournaments. They even took first and second place for best float in a parade!
They became known beyond their exemplary wares. The two stores frequently showcased eclectic and special collections. William Schwanke displayed a collection of artistic silver from the Royal Society of British Artists club. In 1936 William Schwanke’s firm even managed to display the Star of Artaban, a $35,000 star sapphire “about the size of a hen’s egg and weighs about 316.85 carats.” This magnificent stone, which now resides in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, was a part of a larger $400,000 display in 1936.
Despite the fabulous displays, both firms—like the rest of the world—had to endure WWI and the Great Depression, holding major sales in effort to prevail. It was these factors along with aging founders that eventually led to the merging of the two firms.
THE MERGER
Despite trying to squash “unfounded rumors,” Alsted-Kasten Co. and William H. Schwanke Jewelers merged on November 21, 1936. After 37 years, the long-rivaled jewelry firms merged into SchwankeKasten Jewelers as we know it today. Charles E. Kasten, son of C.J. Kasten, would become president and handle the financial aspects of the business and William Schwanke would become vice president and handle the merchandising. This merger, in their words, “will be more economical to operate the two stores under one roof.” Kasten said, “We will pass this economy along to consumer. Our stock now inventories at $150,000 and none of it is more than six months old.” Following the merger, the newly minted Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers carried on its endless pursuit of maintaining high standards of quality and service.
Shortly after the merge, William Schwanke quietly married Mercedes Bradley. WWII began not long after. Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers sold war bonds at one point and closed on Saturdays during this unsettled time.
EXPERT PURVEYORS IN EXCELLENCE
Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers continued to be held in high
regard in Milwaukee as experts in gemstones and jewelry. The firm (specifically William Schwanke) helped organize and spoke at lectures on gemstones for the National Retail Jewelers Association, GIA and the AGS. The Milwaukee Journal and The Sentinel , among other trade publications, often tapped the expertise of SchwankeKasten Jewelers regarding the 4 C’s of Diamonds, even baby jewelry and unique watches!
Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers continued to bring unique window and in-store displays. As one of 200 Patek Philippe dealers in the world, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers had a 1-of-37 example watch, a gold grand and little Sonnerie. This complicated timepiece was made for the World’s Fair and took years of blueprints to devise. Following the end of WWII, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers displayed one of the first marine chronometers in Milwaukee; at the time this was one of the most accurate portable timekeeping devices and people used it to set their watches. Once, a diamond evaluator was brought in to show those interested how a professional jeweler arrives at the value of a diamond, among a “quarter-million-dollar collection of magnificent jewelry pieces, assembled especially as a companion exhibit…”. Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers firmly believed that educational and historical opportunities would help the public make informed and worthwhile decisions when purchasing jewelry and silverware. William Schwanke believed the number one guiding principle of running a jewelry store, is trust.
USS WISCONSIN SILVER TEA SERVICE SET
In 1943, under the direction of Governor Goodland, there was a $7,500 budgeted directive to add a silver tea service and replace and refurbish any missing pieces to the original 35-piece set, coincidentally designed by Christian Preusser Jewelers, created in 1901. The original silver service set featured 1,552 ounces of hand-wrought silver and was delivered aboard the original USS Wisconsin to be used when hosting formal receptions and foreign dignitaries. While the original USS Wisconsin was decommissioned in the 1920s, it was recommissioned in 1943. With recommissioning of the newly constructed USS Wisconsin, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers worked with Gorham Co. to create this nearly 450-ounce silver tea set. It was wonderfully ornate, adorned with “symbolic badgers, pinecones, grain sheaves and the great seal of Wisconsin.” The pieces included: a $1,215 tray, $925 hot water kettle, $575 coffee pot, $545 tea pot, $395 sugar
bowl with a cover, $335 cream jug and a waste bowl or “slop” for $300. The rest of the budget went to replacing and refurbishing the missing pieces in the original set. In 1988, following the final recommissioning of what was once the largest battleship in WWII, the 48-piece set was estimated to be worth around $500,000.
THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY & RESIDENTIAL STORE
In November of 1949, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers celebrated 50 years in business. It offered a time to reflect and appreciate the development of this jewelry firm as an institution in Milwaukee. The firm’s tenets were reflected in an ad that read as follows:
“The belief that beauty is no mere accident to life but a positive necessity has made it possible to adhere steadfastly to the principles of fine craftsmanship through prosperity and depression, war and peace. Although there is a great deal of sham art to be had, such work is hurtful not only to the buyer but to the maker and seller as well. Because we are a business, we must, of course, make a reasonable profit if we are to survive; but we will lose money if we must, before we will dispense poor craftsmanship.”
Shortly after the celebration, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers opened their “residential” store at 326 E. Silver Spring Dr. as one of the first tenants in the Fox Bay building.
In the spring of 1957, William Schwanke passed away from a battle with cancer at the age of 63. He was survived by his wife, Mercedes Schwanke, who ran the jewelry store, along with her sister Lola as secretary and Malcom Dixon, her nephew, as a sales manager. Shortly after his passing, the firm closed and sold its downtown location and consolidated their efforts at the Whitefish Bay location. Mercedes Schwanke became a rare woman business owner during this time.
DIAMONDS INTERNATIONAL AWARD
In the same year, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers was one of 23 recipients of the Diamonds International award for best brooch design. This handmade platinum “spray-pin” brooch featured 94 round diamonds, 11 navettes and seven baguettes diamonds that formed a five-petaled orange blossom. This one-of-a-kind piece was valued at $4,200 in 1957. As a part of our 125th anniversary, we recreated this award-winning brooch.
Additionally, in 1950, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers became an Official Rolex Jeweler.
ONWARD AND UPWARD
In 1982, Malcom Dixon, Mercedes Schwanke’s nephew, took over Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers, marking the beginning of the Dixon family ownership. He had worked at Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers as a salesperson for 23 years prior. Sadly, Malcom unexpectedly passed away two years later in an accident in 1984, leaving the jewelry store to his wife and adult children. It was briefly run by his wife Patricia, then his son William (Bill) in 1988, and eventually his son Tom beginning in 1994.
Under Tom’s helm, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers transformed from a silverware and gift store to a leader in highend watches and timeless jewelry in the Midwest. The store has since carried an array of high-end Swiss watch brands, often times acting as the first in the state to carry the line, sometimes in the United States. SchwankeKasten Jewelers quickly took on TUDOR watches when they re-entered the US market in 2013. They became one of the first independent jewelers to offer Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches in 2023. The store exclusively partnered with diamond vendors and jewelry designers who were in compliance with the Kimberly Accord, to ensure that diamonds were conflict free.
In 2003, neighboring business partners started on fire, which caused water damage to the store; coincidentally, around the same time Tom had the opportunity to purchase a building across the street at 417 E. Silver Spring Dr., where the store resides today.
In 2017, Charlie Dixon, Tom’s eldest son, joined the company, marking the third “Dixon” generation to work at the store. His focus on digital marketing helped transform the company’s reach further in the era of the internet. He became president in 2023, while Tom continues his role as CEO and owner of Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers.
In 2021, with the help of the Whitefish Bay Business Improvement District, Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers began construction on building an entire second floor to elevate the shopping experience. Partnering with the awardwinning architecture design firm, LA DALLMAN, whose co-founder James Dallman went to grade school with Tom, created an award-winning lounge complete with a full kitchen, bar, dining room, office and patio. The philosophy behind the design came from an everchanging retail environment where clientele continue to look for a more personal, deeper connection and experience-driven shopping. In 2023, the store completed its first-floor renovation.
RECREATING HISTORY
Inspired by its past, Schwanke-Kasten brings three timeless treasures from yesteryear back
to life.
Given our momentous anniversary, we have decided to dive into our archives to recreate some of our favorite pieces. We have carefully combed through books of these beautiful drawings of jewelry from the 1940s to ’60s that exhibit timeless, modern qualities.
To start this endeavor, we began with the award-winning Platinum Diamond Spray Pin Brooch from 1957, which won an award for best brooch design at Diamonds International. The platinum brooch features 5.12 total carats of various marquise, round and baguette cuts (F-G color, VS clarity) for a truly iconic, heirloom-worthy piece.
Additionally, we discovered a gorgeous yellow gold, emerald cabochon ring in our archives that we absolutely had to recreate 6.72ct emerald.
The latest ring we created is a timeless moi” style ring with a emerald-cut ruby and erald-cut diamond, with tapered baguettes both sides in platinum.
Presented to the late William Schwanke, this diamond spray pin brooch marked the first time a Milwaukee jeweler won an award from Diamonds International. This was 1 of 49 winning designs selected that year from around the world. It was set to retail at $4,200 in 1957.

TOP 5 ENGAGEMENT RING TRENDS
Follow your heart to one of today’s favorite styles. They’re popular now but always timeless—after all, diamonds are forever.
1. SOLITAIRE | Let the beauty of the diamond speak for itself! We’ve been seeing more interest in solitaire or three-stone rings without hiding it behind the melee of smaller diamonds.
2. THREE-STONE | Why settle for one, when you can get three! We’ve seen an increase in interest in three-stone engagement rings, particularly with oval-cut and cushion-cut diamonds. Pair it with classic tapered baguettes or trapezoid diamonds and you have a timeless, three-stone diamond engagement ring.
3. YELLOW GOLD | Yellow gold is back in full force, with no indication of leaving anytime soon. It’s a shift from stark white to soft, neutral tones. We still like setting the diamond in a white gold or platinum head to maximize the scintillation of the diamond.
4. CUSTOM | You dream it, we can make it! Let us build you a ring as unique and as special as the love between you and your soulmate.
5. EMERALD-CUTS | Timeless and instantly recognizable for its geometric “hall of mirrors” effect due to the step cuts. We’ve seen a steady rise in interest for this classic diamond cut.
WHAT WE CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR ENGAGEMENT RINGS?
Functionality: How does your partner wear their jewelry? Are they hard on their rings? Do they work in a job that requires them to wear low profile settings? For example, if they work in the medical field and wear latex gloves, a high center stone setting likely would not be conducive.
Style: What you like may not be what your partner likes. Ask them what cut of stones they like or metal color they enjoy wearing. After all, they’ll be the one wearing it daily! It is more than OK to clue them in on your engagement ring shopping.
Budget: This is the awkward question that we all want to avoid. Gone are the days of twomonths’ salary. However, it is important to have an idea of what you’d like to spend based on comfortability, where you are in life and expected wedding expenses.
