CROSSING OF THE GODS

As beautiful and divine as the Japanese lake that inspired its creation, this new Grand Seiko is the stuff legends are made of.

Grand seiko routinely uses its culture and nature to inspire its dial and movement designs, so much so that its philosophy is “The Nature of Time.” The SBGY007 is no different. This clean, 38.5 mm, stainless steel dress watch from the company’s Elegance Collection evokes the legend of Omiwatari.

The legend stems from the freezing of the waters of Lake Suwa, where mysterious large cracks and ridges form across the surface—some as high as over a foot tall! Locals believe the Shinto gods walk over the ice forming these cracks.

The texturized, ice blue dial mimics the undulations of the frozen lake, created by hammering the dial’s mold to form the edges and rounded shape. The razor-sharp hour and minute hands as well as perfectly polished indexes are signatures of Grand Seiko’s dedication to supreme craftsmanship and attention to detail. Additionally, the finishing of the case, hands and indexes showcases the famous Grand Seiko Zaratszu polishing, an enthralling perfect mirror detail that exhibits the interplay of light and shadow.

Utilizing the manual wind Spring Drive Caliber 9R31, the trademark of which is the mesmerizingly smooth sweeping second hand, the SBGY007 delivers a resolute 72-hour power reserve. Turning the watch over, viewers are treated to an exhibition case back that showcases the expertly finished movement highlighted with tempered blue screws and its power reserve indicator.
