HARDSHIP Dylan Finn, who has worked fiercely to turn a major challenge into a positive, believes we’re capable of more than we think.

Sometimes in life, our lowest lows can propel us to seek new heights we never thought possible. Such is the case for Dylan Finn, 24, a Sea Girt resident who endured a catastrophic injury and now is sharing his inspiring story of survival, recovery and the power that comes from believing in one’s own limitless potential. The youngest in his family, Finn grew up just two blocks from the beach in the Washington Boulevard home he shared with his parents, Dan and Donna, both teachers, and older siblings Shane and Kelli. “My family was always close, and we made great memories,” he says. “And while we were all different, we always found a way to get along. My childhood consisted of beach

days, stickball, good family and friends.” When Dan Finn suffered a stroke in 2019, the community rallied around the family. Luckily, he recovered, but the incident sent shockwaves through the family and the town. No one could know then that another terrifying ordeal would soon follow. In October 2020, Finn took a road trip to Asheville, North Carolina, with friends to see one of their favorite bands. On the day of the concert, Finn fell while skateboarding and hit the right and back sides of his head. “I remember nothing for the rest of the day,” he says. “I just remember hopping on the skateboard, hitting my head and that’s it. Lights out. My day went on, and that evening our group went to the Mt. Joy concert.”

A Delayed Emergency At some point, Finn got separated from his friends. “Later in the night, my friend found me face-first on the pavement with blood coming out of my ears, nose and mouth,” Finn says. “She called an ambulance, and I was rushed to the hospital.” Finn spent the next 14 days in a noninduced coma at Mission Hospital in Asheville. When he woke up, he had no memories from the day of the accident or the concert. He soon learned the fall had caused four hemorrhages in his brain. He spent another week at the hospital before he was well enough to make the journey to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey, where he spent the next two weeks. “My recovery was definitely a bumpy road; it was not linear,” says Finn. “I had some hard days struggling to pronounce three-syllable words, remembering what I had for breakfast and learning how to run again at age 21.” But, he says, the hardest part was accepting what had happened. “Being able to appreciate surviving an injury so

catastrophic and appreciate life was hard for me,” says Finn. “I had a recovery that didn’t seem imaginable.”

Carolina, the town where he went to college and earned his degree in hospitality and tourism.

Healing and Helping Since his injury, Finn actively seeks to help anyone working to overcome hardship. “I knew I had to share my story and help anyone struggling,” he says. “Even if it was only one person, I knew I had to help. I didn’t want anyone to experience or feel what I felt.” On his road to recovery, while at the gym, Finn met Paul Melella, who would become his mentor. “Paul told me my story was too powerful to not help other people; that I should write a book. I had to get my story on paper. Truthfully, it felt amazing getting my feelings on paper. It was a time of my life I will always hold near to my heart, so being able to write it all down felt amazing.” These days, Finn is back home in Sea Girt, working from his home on West Chicago Boulevard and pursuing new horizons. He recently trained and ran a half marathon in Charleston, South

Seeking New Challenges “Running wasn’t always a passion of mine,” he says. “I actually signed up for the half marathon because I used to hate running and wanted to accomplish something that wasn’t easy for me.” When asked what he hopes people can gain from hearing his story, Finn says, “I hope that people will understand that learning how to overcome difficulty and growing from it is what makes life so important—knowing you can come out of something when you never thought it was possible. I really wanted to share my story to inspire people to know that we are capable of so much more than we think we are.” “Growth: Flipping the Script on My Life-Changing Moment” by Dylan Finn will be released on February 6. It might be the middle of winter,

but in February the warmth of love is in the air, sparked by Valentine’s Day. The Sandfords of Sea Girt and the Ryans of Spring Lake have been celebrating Valentine’s Day for many years. Here, we share their sweet stories.

Carol and Jim Sandford will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this year. After raising their two children in Ridgewood, New Jersey, they retired in Sea Girt, where they’ve now lived for 17 years.

THE SANDFORDS: 60 YEARS AND COUNTING When two people walk along the Sea Girt boardwalk holding hands, passersby smile. Carol and Jim Sandford have been walking together for some time. This November, they will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. The two met quite accidentally at a big football weekend at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Jim was an engineering student there. Carol and her college roommate had traveled from Washington by bus for the gala weekend. During the flurry of festivities, Carol met a fellow New Jerseyan. His name? Jim Sandford. Their New Jersey connection blossomed into Jim writing a letter to Carol asking if they might meet in their home state over the upcoming Christmas holidays. They did meet, and that was the beginning of a 60-year love affair. After college, the couple married and lived in Ridgewood, New Jersey, for many

years and raised their two children there. In 2007, when they both retired, a decision was made: They would move to Sea Girt and live in the house built in 1952 that had been passed down from Jim’s grandparents.

Settling in Sea Girt The Sandfords had been frequent visitors to Sea Girt over the years, but as Carol says, “Visiting this lovely town never prepared us for the magic of living close to the ocean full-time.” However, the beauty of the town and the ocean wasn’t quite enough. They wanted to be involved in the community and become more a part of it. This led to Jim joining the Shade Tree Commission and eventually becoming chairman. He also volunteered as a docent at the Sea Girt Lighthouse. Learning about the history of the building and taking visitors for tours was something he enjoyed. His commitment and

enthusiasm led to his position today as a Lighthouse trustee. Meanwhile, Carol joined the Holly Club where she bonded with other members, brought in new ideas and enjoyed working on a variety of club projects. Her leadership qualities did not go unnoticed. She was asked and agreed to take on the role of president. During Carol’s two-year term, she helped move the club forward on many fronts. She continues to be busy with the Holly Club’s Beautification Committee. Carol is also an enthusiastic bridge player and a participant in the Sea Girt Library book clubs. Many years have gone by since Carol and Jim met quite accidentally one weekend in 1963. They continue to enjoy each other’s company, and their lives are busy and full between their children, grandchildren and local town activities. Love and the magic of Sea Girt endure.

Betsy and Frank Ryan still live in the Spring Lake home where Frank grew up. There, they raised three children while pursuing careers—he as an accountant and she as a special education teacher—and being active in community theater and scouting.

The Spring Lake Theatre gave a celebration bash for Frank Ryan after his 400th performance as the Ghost of Christmas Future in its annual production of “Scrooge.” But this was not his last act. He continued for another three shows before lowering the curtain in 2019. Over the years, Frank’s partner in life, Betsy Ryan, was involved with the theater group as well. She helped as prop manager for a variety of shows. The Ryan team very much enjoyed their time with the theater. Who are these two people who have been married for 55 years and live in the house Frank’s parents bought in Spring Lake in 1943? Betsy and Frank met on a car ride with friends. It began with what Frank thought to be quite rude. From the back seat of the car, Betsy asked him, “What do you do?” Frank felt it was quite bold of this stranger to

ask such a question. Nevertheless, he responded, “I’m a teacher.” Betsy returned enthusiastically with “So am I!” Surprised, Frank turned around in his seat to see Betsy’s smiling face. This was the spark that led to the two getting married on Flag Day, 1969. That love continues to grow as years go by. The couple raised their three children in that same Spring Lake home. Betsy pursued her career as a special education teacher for 22 years. She also volunteered as both a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader in town. Frank Ryan’s career changed from working as an accountant for the State of New Jersey to teaching accounting in various high schools throughout the state. But the real passion in his life (aside from Betsy) has been baseball. It’s the game he has played since he first went to a live game at Yankee Stadium at age 6.

Rooted in Spring Lake In the 1950s, Frank and a group of other Spring Lakers, including Ben Dineen and Harry Byrnes, started what they called the Morning League. It eventually became known as Ben’s League. This group of ragtag baseball aficionados had many years of having fun in various parks and open spaces around town. They made up and changed the rules of the game to suit their needs. It was all about the comradery that playing team sports creates. Although the others are gone now, Frank lives on to cherish his many fond memories. These days Betsy and Frank travel, go to the gym (Wings), attend theater in New York and support their beloved Spring Lake Theatre. Visits with their children and grandchildren keep them busy. They plan on celebrating this Valentine’s Day at one of their favorite local restaurants.

For Stephen Kenny, the first month

of the COVID-19 pandemic was full of uncertainty. “Everything was shut, and people were rightfully afraid. Nobody really knew what was going on.” Then he noticed that the live stream for the daily Mass at St. Catherine Church had more than 800 people watching. “On any given weekday before the pandemic, 50 people max might be at church,” says Kenny. The

former Wall Street executive turned high school religion teacher knew people were starving for connection and companionship. Many of the people involved in community and charitable works were frustrated that their mission had been put on hold. Area churches, which generously open their doors for many groups to meet, were closed. Kenny used his knowledge of available resources and technology,

and his connections in three Catholic parishes in Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Manasquan, to help provide programs and bring different groups of people together in Zoom meetings. Once it got warmer, the groups moved outside. “Everyone was home, and it was clear that sitting on the beach in a large circle with our beautiful surroundings enhanced the discussion and cemented bonds.”

A Community Resource Building on the momentum, Kenny formalized Shore Catholics as a 501(c) (3) and began to help others organize their community work. He helped them set up websites and provided marketing, communication and connections for meetings. As the pandemic waned, instead of falling off, the good works have spread. The group meetings thrived after COVID. “People today crave authentic connections, to know they are not the only people coping with modern life,” says

Kenny. “We all have similar problems.” Different groups that met during COVID continue. Meetings are held on the Spring Lake beach and boardwalk, and at different churches in the area, including St. Mark, St. Margaret, St. Catharine and St. Denis. These groups attract people from Point Pleasant to Bradley Beach—all are welcome. These relationships don’t end when people pick up their beach chairs. Tailgating, golf, lunch groups and other activities are the natural result of the bonding that takes place.

Shore Catholics supports many discussion groups and local service organizations, including Walking With Purpose and Loaves and Fishes.

Amplifying Service Walking With Purpose (WWP) is a women’s Bible study and discussion group. Through their meetings, women share universal struggles, learn more about their faith and apply it to daily life, helping each other and their neighbors. They also have provided an uplifting program for middle school-age girls to help them realize their true worth and beauty. Debbie D’Agostaro, one of the founders of the group, says, “Shore Catholics has been a huge support to our Walking with Purpose women’s Bible study. They are willing to provide whatever is needed, such as communications with other churches, registration and marketing materials, and financial assistance. We have been able to minister to more than 500 women during these past six years, including during COVID, with their assistance. and uplifting messages to their neighbors during times of stress. Some cook and others deliver meals to Spring Lake-area families with temporary issues. Patients just home from the hospital, families dealing with health issues or bereavement, and new moms have all benefitted from the group.

Serving Groups of All Faiths “I was involved with Loaves and Fishes in my town up north,” says Walsh. “I wanted to start it here in Spring Lake. I was having difficulty getting traction when a lady from WWP suggested I contact Shore Catholics. We met, worked out a mission statement and set up a website that lets volunteers sign up and potential recipients tell us about their needs.” “Kelly has a beautiful heart for service,” says Kenny. “She now has 30 volunteers, and we have little to do but offer some practical guidance and prayerful support.” Everyone feels rewarded by the gratitude. Erin McBride is a recent beneficiary. “My family has been receiving meals from

Loaves and Fishes for a couple of months now because my dad, Kerry, is recovering from a major surgery and fighting cancer,” she says. “I just want to say the biggest thank-you on behalf of my family. We are in disbelief at the kindness and support from everybody involved! The delicious food and comforting messages give us hope and strength. If there is a way to forward this message to anyone who has shown support, I would love for them to know how much we all appreciate it.” Kenny emphasizes that the charitable groups Shore Catholics works with serve people of all faiths, and their Bible and discussion groups have attracted non-Catholics. “Each of the groups we support impacts the quality of life in our community in a positive way. How blessed are we to live in such a wonderful place.”

A good night’s sleep is often

considered the cornerstone of overall well-being, and one key player in achieving restful nights is often overlooked—airway health. The intricate relationship between quality breathing and a good night’s sleep is a fascinating yet under-explored topic that deserves our attention. The airways are responsible for delivering the oxygen our bodies need to function optimally, and any disruptions in this process can have profound effects on our sleep patterns. Poor airway health can be a silent disruptor, leading to sleep disorders such as snoring, sleep apnea and restless nights. Conditions like sleep apnea, where breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted during sleep, not only impact sleep quality but also pose serious health risks. Addressing airway health is a crucial step in ensuring a restorative and uninterrupted night’s sleep.

The Impact on Well-being When our airways are compromised, the body may struggle to maintain the deep, restful sleep necessary for healing and rejuvenation. This can lead to daytime fatigue, decreased cognitive function and even mood disturbances. In children, sleep disorders can have significant negative effects on growth and well-being. Children must have ideal, peaceful, restorative sleep for proper growth and development. Airway issues and lack of sleep can cause delayed development, possible ADHD diagnosis and reduced IQ. Enhancing Airway Health Fortunately, there are various strategies to enhance airway health and, consequently, improve the quality of sleep. Anyone who has already been diagnosed with sleep apnea and/ or uses a CPAP machine can improve their airway function through a recommended treatment plan along with lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoi-

ding smoking and managing allergies. In most cases, our airway treatments result in the patient no longer needing to use their CPAP devices. To determine if a treatment plan is necessary, we perform a series of analyses starting with a sleep questionnaire. If fitting, we would then recommend a home sleep screening and perform a CBCT scan to analyze the structure of the airway. If treatment is necessary, we begin to resolve the airway issues through orthopedic and orthodontic corrections and/or sleep appliance treatment. The significance of airway health in promoting quality sleep should not be underestimated in both children and adults. As we become more attuned to the rhythm of our breathing, we empower ourselves to take proactive steps toward improving our overall well-being. By recognizing and addressing airway issues, we pave the way for nights filled with deep, rejuvenating sleep—a gift that keeps on giving to our health and vitality. So, let’s start breathing easy and embracing the crucial link between airway health and a good night’s sleep.
