Inspired to Paint Local artist Nancy Robinson takes us inside her studio. BY KERRY SERZAN

INTERVIEW WITH

NANCY ROBINSON

When Nancy Robinson isn’t painting in her home studio, she’s likely out on one of her daily walks, drawing inspiration from the ocean, the lake and her impressions of the beautiful town she calls home. The well-known artist has exhibited her work all over the East Coast and garnered many awards over her prestigious career. She recently took a break from her canvas to catch up with Spring Lake magazine and share a glimpse into her life.

10 | SPRING LAKE 10-12 SL_Q&A_0124_Final.indd 10

Robinson frequently paints places that bring her joy. St. Catharine Church in springtime offers endless inspiration.

PHOTOGRAPH BY MICHELLE WOLFE

What subjects do you paint most often, and do you have a preferred medium? I enjoy painting landscapes, seascapes and figurative art. I also do commissions for my clients, including house portraits, landscapes and depictions of their chosen places of interest. While I work in both oils and watercolor, I cannot say I favor one over the other. Each brings its own challenges and different ways of approaching the painting. My work is realistic, and my primary challenge is to represent strong light, composition and values.

How do you find inspiration where you live?

When did your interest in painting begin?

It’s such a joy to live in this beautiful town where the lake and the ocean are a constant inspiration for my paintings. Living in Spring Lake has brought me full circle. My recently widowed mom was living here after I graduated college. My husband, Michael, and I were married at Saint Catharine Church. We moved to Connecticut for eight years, then to Basking Ridge, where we raised our three children, for 30 years.

I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. As a child, my parents always made sure I had ample art materials. I readily chose drawing over playing with toys and games. In grade school, I took a famous artist course. I continued to study art through high school and received my art education and degree in fine arts from Saint Elizabeth University.

We always hoped to return to Spring Lake, and eight years ago we moved here full time. I’ve always had a space to work in our previous homes, so when we built our home on Pennsylvania Avenue, we included studio space on the third floor.

Q &a What are highlights from your early career? While raising children I’ve always worked in an artistic capacity, including house illustrations for real estate companies, card illustrations for C.R. Gibson and teaching small group classes in Basking Ridge. A tedious yet interesting job was painting tiny coats of arms for a heraldry company. Post-college, I had a creative breakthrough when I had the opportunity to study with notable watercolorist Carol Hubbard—thus began a lifelong love affair with watercolor.

Do you have a favorite artist? I am moved by numerous painters; however, I most admire the Impressionists: Sargent, Homer, Sorolla and James Wyeth.

How do you continue to expand your horizons?

Clockwise from above: Tea Time: Mother’s Day tulips still life. Sea Swept: Robinson always keeps an eye on the ocean and uses photos and sketches to complete her paintings of the sea. Nantucket Sail: This painting was inspired by the beauty of Nantucket and the memory of a day spent sailing with the family.

Kerry Serzan is a freelance writer and local mom of four. Through her writing, she enjoys sharing the beauty of her community and celebrating the ordinary moments that make life extraordinary.

I am always striving to improve my work and take workshops with notable artists. I’m active in several art clubs where we exhibit our work. The Manasquan River Group of Artists, of which I am part, recently had an exhibit in the Upper Gallery of the Community House. Presently, I teach “Nan’s art classes” to my eight grandchildren. When I’m not painting, my time is filled with visiting family and traveling. We often go to Nantucket or to see family in Virginia and Illinois. We recently started going on river cruises with college friends and have been fortunate to visit several European cities. We once spent a month in Florence and Tuscany—spectacular and inspirational to say the least! In town, I walk almost daily, play mahjong and canasta and am in a book club. Being an artist can be both humbling and rewarding. I am grateful for this gift. Each day, rather than say “today I have to paint,” I say, “today I get to paint.” Robinson’s artwork is available in Frederick Gallery in Spring Lake and at Jersey Shore Moments in Manasquan. Robinson can be reached through her website at www.robinsonoriginals.com.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

Here’s What My Clients Have To Say We feel so fortunate to have met Heather during an open house that she was hosting for her colleague. Although we had another Realtor show us one home before meeting Heather, we were woefully underwhelmed with her services and general lack of interest in us as serious buyers. However, we connected with Heather immediately. She Asked the right questions to create a “buyer profile” without being aggressive or overly pushy (that’s a huge turnoff for us) and we had let her know that the house we were visiting that day would likely be outside of our budget. Heather followed up with us a few days later and we started communicating about new listings that were coming on the market. Shortly there after we were away for a long weekend when a property was listed that we wanted to see. Heather offered to “preview” the property for us and let us know if we should schedule an appointment for that Monday when we returned back to NJ. Heather sent us a video tour of the home which was extremely helpful. Then she called us on our way home to let us know that the home didn’t meet the major criteria that we were looking for. She was not trying to just sell a house to us, she was genuinely trying to find us the right house which we greatly appreciated. Heather went to work and found us our new home! Additionally, we believe that Heather takes the time to research & understand the views of both the seller and buyer, regardless of what her role is. Every Seller has particular needs when selling their home and we know that Heather would be sure she had a complete understanding of those needs before actively marketing their home to find the right buyer. Shortly into our relationship with Heather, we recommended her to our Nephew who quickly secured a home in Wall with her expert help! We would highly recommend Heather to any seller or buyer in the area - she knows her territory. She was extremely helpful to us throughout the process (which can be nerve-wracking!), including interfacing with the listing agent to ensure that things ran smoothly and providing us with great recommendations for home a home inspector and other professionals to assist us with our purchase. As your trusted real estate broker it’s important to deliver results that you will want to share. I look forward to seeing what you have to say once our work together is done!

For 120 years, two footbridges have connected the community and been a beloved part of many local traditions.

BY VINCENT DICKS

The beautiful pair of footbridges spanning Spring Lake have been treasured for more than a century. They are a shortcut to the beach, a backdrop for thousands of photographs, a prime fishing spot and a place for quiet reflection. Their cedar branch paneling blends perfectly into their surroundings at Divine Park. A disastrous fire in Spring Lake in September 1900 damaged or destroyed 11 hotels and most of the original business district. The smoldering wreckage of the Monmouth House was tossed into the lake to extinguish it. Plans were quickly made to rebuild Spring Lake. A New Monmouth Hotel, an elaborate chapel and a new downtown at Third Avenue were planned. The community rallied around Mayor O.H. Brown and utilities magnate Martin Maloney, who contributed significant funds for the projects.

Artistic, but Practical In January 1902, community leaders selected renowned Asbury Park architect William C. Cottrell to build a “rustic foot bridge” across Spring Lake. His design was described by the Monmouth Democrat this way: “The structure is to be 200 feet long, six feet wide, and will be about eight feet above the water at the highest point. It will be a decidedly artistic structure, crossing the lake about in front of the Maloney Memorial Catholic Chapel. The paneling between each span will be of a different design and the roofing of each span above the water will be arched. There will be a large double span in the centre.” The Maloney Chapel was a reference to St. Catharine Church, which was under construction and paid for in full by Maloney. The diocese had not yet approved the name change from Saint Ann’s. (The church was dedicated in May 1902.) The height of the bridge would allow for ice harvesting equipment to still work the lake and for small pleasure craft—and eventually witches on stand-up paddleboards—to pass under its span. Cottrell, a builder turned architect, worked with his son Alfred on the plans. The duo had just completed the design for the new Rococo style Asbury Park Casino. Cotrell had also earned royalties as an inventor of a novel nested trolley wheel with ball bearings that revolutionized street cars. When completed, the cedar bridge was a hit with locals and visitors alike. It was part of the rebirth of Spring Lake. The New Monmouth Hotel was opened in 1904 for the wedding of Maloney’s oldest daughter, Margaret, who was married in an elaborate ceremony at St. Catharine with the new bridge as a backdrop. The tradition continues, and on any given day you may see bridal parties posing on or near the bridges.

Making It a Pair The matching span to the north over Fourth Avenue was proposed in 1912. When first requested by Mayor Brown in an executive session with the council, there were many other pressing issues, including the need for Ocean Avenue paving and sewer projects. Brown was undaunted. A second bridge would shorten the walk to the new downtown for many citizens. It took a petition from some influential citizens and

business owners, including Susan Urie, Tim Hurley, Mrs. Vanburen and Alfred Hofmeister to convince the borough to move on the second bridge, which copied the design of the Mercer Avenue structure, with subtle differences. The cedar bridge decking and unique paneling have been replaced several times, with the bridges totally removed for new pilings in 1988 and 1994. The last major refurbishment to the bridges was in 2015, at which

time the borough and a community group, Friends of the Spring Lake Footbridges, helped preserve the original rustic design. Postcards through the years have featured both bridges and show that today’s structure has only had minor changes from the original Cottrel designs. For the holiday season, the bridges are lighted and reflect brightly off of the lake’s surface. They are an integral part of the image people have of Spring Lake.

Strike Up the

Band! For local music fans, there’s no treat quite like Sentimental Journey Big Band.

Sentimental Journey Big Band has

entertained Spring Lake and Sea Girt music lovers for many years. If you aren’t familiar with the band, here’s a little history of who they are and the type of music they love to play. “Swing” is a type of jazz that became popular in the 30s and 40s, a time when people needed something to lift them from the Great Depression and World War II. The upbeat, sometimes rowdy rhythm of swing got people snapping their fingers, clapping their hands and dancing the

Lindy and the jitterbug. Sentimental Journey Big Band was started by Frank Richetti, who played trumpet with the 2nd Marine Air Wing Band during the war. Years later, in 1991, Frank’s continued love of swing-era music inspired him to gather a group of musicians to carry on the tradition. One of the most popular swing tunes was “Sentimental Journey,” which led to the band’s name. In 2017 Richetti turned the band over to Altha and Curt Morton, but he played his trumpet until he passed at age 96.

“When you become a musician, it’s a journey not a destination. It’s always improvising, always inspiring.” - Curt Morton of Sentimental Journey Big Band

All-Around Talent Altha Morton was a feisty Brielle girl who loved to sing and tried a variety of instruments. But she most wanted to play drums. When she was told that “girls don’t play drums,” she persisted and eventually became the first female drummer in the Manasquan High School Warrior band. Altha taught music at Spring Lake Heights school. In addition to being a talented musician, gifted teacher and songwriter, Altha has a voice that could rock Broadway. Her vocal talent has taken her to an expansive musical career. She has appeared throughout the

eastern U.S. singing swing, jazz, country, gospel and pop music. As a professional songwriter, she is a member of ASCAP and has performed in Nashville and at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame celebration in New York City. She opened for Johnny Cash the three times he performed in New Jersey, and they became good friends. When Altha sings with Sentimental Journey Big Band, the audience is in for a treat. It’s not only her powerful voice—the teacher in her also instinctively educates the audience on the songs, taking them to a deeper appreciation of music.

The Music Man As music director of the 17-piece Sentimental Journey Big Band, Curt Morton helps bring music to life. Curt is a native Sea-Girter and was a classmate of Altha’s at Manasquan High School. They crossed paths through music. Who knew back then that today they would be married, live in the house Curt grew up in and produce the music they both love? Curt is a man of many interests and talents, but music is a constant in his life. As a clarinetist, flutist, saxophonist, singer and conductor, he is partial to swing and jazz. Curt’s concerts connect with the audience by presenting music with a theme, such as “The Music That Won WWII.” The Sentimental Journey Big Band performs in both Spring Lake and Sea Girt, bringing a fresh approach to the great American songbook. (For band performance and other information visit www.mortonsmusicllc.com.) “When you become a musician,” Curt says, “it’s a journey, not a destination. It’s always improvising, always inspiring.” This is the essence of Sentimental Journey Big Band.

Altha and Curt Morton, Sea Girt residents who met at Manasquan High School, lead the 17-piece Sentimental Journey Big Band, which plays locally in both Sea Girt and Spring Lake.

Judith Jones-Ambrosini, a Sea Girt resident for 30 years, is actively involved with a variety of borough activities, including the Holly Club’s Beautification Committee. She is author of “The Sisterhood of Diabetes, facing Challenges & Living Dreams.”

This book tells the story of Nigerian writer Ekong Udousoro, who wins a Toni Morrison Publishing Fellowship and gets the chance to work in NYC’s publishing industry. While Akpan’s commentary on publishing can be harsh at

times, I found I learned so much about the Biafran war and the character’s cultural identity. From the opening line—“Nothing was going to stop me from enjoying New York to the marrow”— this was a gritty and rewarding read. “ONE ITALIAN SUMMER” By Rebecca Serle Serle’s books continue to be staff favorites time and time again. In this book, Serle transports us to Italy, specifically the picturesque Positano. The main character, Katy, keeps her promise to her deceased mother and takes their “trip of a lifetime,” following the same travel route mom did as a young woman. Equal parts magical realism and a celebratory glass of limoncello, this novel will have you booking your Positano trip in no time! Be on the lookout for Serle’s spring release, “Expiration Dates,“ coming in March 2024.

“THE FROZEN RIVER” By Ariel Lawhon The best kind of read is one where you learn something you’ve never heard of before. In this book, readers are taken back in time to Maine in 1789, when the Kennebec River had frozen. This gripping historical mystery was inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. Lawhon found Ballard’s journal while in the waiting room at her

doctor’s office. Not only are readers transported back in time, but we learn so much about this fearless woman whom history has failed to recognize. “WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN VEGAS: TRUE STORIES OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE VEGAS, VEGAS” By James Patterson and Mark Seal Readers typically associate James Patterson with his mysteries and thrillers, unforgettable Alex Cross and page-turning suspense. But in his latest nonfiction release, Patterson and coauthor Seal give us the inside scoop on the inner workings of America’s most dazzling city. These true-life editions of Patterson’s books, including “Walk in My Combat Boots,” “E.R. Nurses” and the forthcoming “The Secret Lives of Booksellers and Librarians,” go right to the sources. The authors interview workers from every source on the strip: N9NE Steakhouse chefs, Elvis impersonators and Harry Reid Airport attendants. The true accounts of Las Vegas workers will have you ready to book a trip to the strip!

“THE LANGUAGE OF TREES” By Katie Holten Hear me out here. “The Language of Trees” is a different kind of travel book, if you will. So many Thunder Road Books readers are fascinated by the natural world, especially the conservation of trees and their natural habitats. Holten has gathered some incredibly talented writers, including Ross Gay, Zadie Smith and even Radiohead, all of whom share a love of and fascination with the preservation of trees. How lucky are we in New Jersey that the geographical landscape includes some beautiful forests to explore with this book in hand!

On omakase nights at Spring Lake Seafood, diners surrender their tastebuds to the experts: Bradley Rodriguez, chef and owner, and Chef Li, the restaurant’s in-house sushi chef.

Oh, Those Omakase Nights! Enjoy an authentic chef-guided sushi experience right here in Spring Lake. BY MARIA O’DONNELL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY OSCAR RUIZ

Dive into the mesmerizing art of omakase, a culinary adventure that transcends the everyday and whisks you away on a voyage of the senses. Steeped in Japanese tradition, omakase, meaning “I trust you,” surrenders your tastebuds to the chef ’s practiced hands. This dining experience goes far beyond your average meal, as the chef crafts a bespoke menu, weaving skill and imagination with the finest, freshest seasonal ingredients. Each dish unfolds like a captivating tale, revealing the chef ’s passion and culinary prowess. Embracing the element of surprise and the art of cooking, omakase elevates dining to a symphony of flavors, textures and visual delights, celebrating the marriage of taste, aroma and presentation. Submerge yourself in this captivating tradition and savor the harmonious orchestra of flavors in every meticulously crafted bite, right here in Spring Lake. Chef and owner of Spring Lake Seafood,

Bradley Rodriguez, and in-house sushi chef, Chef Li, combine Rodriguez’s passion for fresh local seafood with Li’s experience of living and training in Japan to bring this special omakase experience to diners. The menu is a symphony of seafood, and it hits all the top notes, fresh, briny and packed with flavor.

An Experience to Remember I was lucky enough to get a coveted seat at the table for this limited, off-season experience. Some of the fabulous seafood showcased included deep sea golden eye snapper from 600 to 900 meters depth, dry-aged and torched; madai snapper, a delicious smooth fish that was heaven to taste; and chutoro laid over warm sushi rice and topped with sea salt. Also featured was the kanpachi baby yellowtail, a soft and silky bite of sushi that any seafood lover would praise. From the hot miso soup with deep-

flavored dashi to homemade purin, a Japanese custard reminiscent of a delectable flan, this meal was one of the best I’ve ever had. You could see the passion and heart of these chefs poured into the almost 20 thoughtful and delicious bites that comprise this event. Even the tools they used for cooking were authentic and serious, like Japanese hardwood charcoal on a kamayaki grill for the seared fatty tuna toro and the hammered Japanese copper pot used for frying the tempura that was so light and crispy. It was perfection. If you’re looking for somewhere special and exciting to dine on a weeknight in the winter, I cannot recommend a better experience than omakase night at Spring Lake Seafood. It’s well worth it! Maria O’Donnell is a food writer and lives in Spring Lake with her husband and two kids. You can follow her on Instagram @foodwritergirl or Facebook “Cooking with Maria.”

REAL ESTATE

Your Housing Wealth An expert Spring Lake real estate broker equips homeowners with market data to give them the truest picture of what their property is worth. BY HEATHER ARCHER

In this digital age, the thrill of perusing

real estate listings has transcended the tactile pages of newspapers, evolving into a complex dance of data points and market trends. My journey into the realm of real estate valuation began in childhood with a keen interest sparked by my father’s Sunday ritual of unpacking The Asbury Park Press. Little did I know that decades later, I would transform into a real estate aficionado, employing sophisticated measures to decipher the intricacies of the local housing market. Back then, my foray into real estate speculation was a game of educated guesses, predicting asking prices based on simple criteria like location, home type, size and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Surprisingly accurate in my estimations, I would diligently compare my guesses to the actual sale prices, creating a mental database of property values in various neighborhoods. Little did I realize that

this childhood pastime would lay the foundation for a future career grounded in the precision of real estate analytics.

Data-Driven Pricing Fast forward to the present, where my obsession with real estate has evolved into a more sophisticated and data-driven practice. Today, I leverage an arsenal of tools, drawing upon data from localized platforms and tapping into national insights through my membership with esteemed organizations such as the National Association of Realtors and The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing. Through them, I gain access to comprehensive market reports and insights from chief economists, allowing me to navigate the waves of our local real estate market with precision. The process of determining a home’s value has transcended the realm of mere guesswork to involve careful analysis of various factors. Market trends, days on market, list price,

absorption rate, sold price and average sold price are among the key metrics that form the bedrock of my valuation strategy. Each data point contributes to a holistic understanding of the dynamic real estate landscape, guiding me in the formulation of the most accurate analysis for pricing a home. Market trends provide invaluable insights into the ebb and flow of demand, helping me anticipate shifts in buyer behavior. Days on market serves as a litmus test for a property’s attractiveness, influencing decisions on pricing adjustments. List price is a crucial benchmark, and absorption rate offers a glimpse into market saturation. Sold price and average sold price distill the reality of recent transactions, allowing me to benchmark against the competition. In today’s market, speed is of the essence. Measuring how quickly a home sells is not just a metric but a strategic advantage. Armed with this wealth of information, I can confidently arrive at an asking price or offer amount that reflects the true value of a property in the current market conditions. As a real estate geek armed with advanced measures and comprehensive data, my journey from childhood speculator to market analyst exemplifies the evolution of real estate valuation. In a world where every data point tells a story, I stand at the forefront, decoding the dance of market trends to craft the perfect asking price for homes in today’s dynamic real estate landscape. Call or email me if you are ready to “geek out” with me and learn more about the value of your home: 908-814-1690 or HeatherArcher70@gmail.com. A real estate broker at RE/MAX Revolution Spring Lake with over eight years of experience, Heather Archer is highly regarded among both clients and peers for her executive-level services and proven track record of fivestar results.

Understanding Facial Trauma With expert care, appearance and function can be restored following injuries to the face. BY JOHN P. SOLIMAN, DMD, MD

fractures of the jaw, cheekbones and nose and eye sockets. Soft tissue injuries such as cuts, bruises and burns are also common. Additionally, facial trauma may result in dental injuries, including broken or knocked-out teeth.

Treatment Options The treatment of facial trauma depends on the specific injuries sustained. In complex cases, a multidisciplinary approach involving oral surgeons, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists and other specialists may be required. Facial fractures often require surgical intervention. The procedure involves realigning fractured bones and securing them in place using plates, screws or wires. Soft tissue injuries may require suturing or reconstructive procedures to restore proper form and function. Dr. Alaina Harrington, Dr. John P. Soliman and Dr. Daniel Winston of Coastal Oral Surgery

Facial trauma can occur

due to various incidents such as accidents, sports injuries or assaults, leading to fractures, lacerations and other injuries to the face. This article will shed light on types of facial trauma, explore the importance

of seeking prompt medical attention and discuss treatment options for recovery and facial restoration.

Types of Facial Trauma Facial trauma encompasses a wide range of injuries, including

Recovery and Rehabilitation The recovery period for facial trauma varies depending on the severity of the injuries. Following surgical procedures, patients may experience swelling, bruising and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication and proper postoperative care. Oral hygiene practices such

as gentle brushing and rinsing are crucial during the healing process.

Facial Restoration Facial trauma can have physical and aesthetic repercussions. Reconstructive procedures such as bone or tissue grafting and scar revision may be needed to restore a natural appearance and improve function. These procedures aim to minimize visible scars, correct facial asymmetry and ensure a harmonious outcome. Facial trauma can have a significant impact on physical and emotional well-being. Seeking immediate medical attention and receiving appropriate treatment are essential steps toward recovery and restoration. With the expertise of skilled healthcare professionals, patients can regain facial function, aesthetics and confidence, paving the way for a brighter future. Dr. John P. Soliman of Coastal Oral Surgery is a distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgeon. With his comprehensive training and expertise, Dr. Soliman is committed to providing compassionate care and helping patients restore their facial form and function. His dedication to improving the lives of those affected by facial trauma has made him a respected authority in the field.

LIFE OUTDOORS

Take a Walk! An avid runner reflects on New Year’s resolutions.

Ahhhh, the holidays. Everyone’s favorite time of year. Special dinners, club extravaganzas, Christmas cookies…the best. This is all woven into a cocoon of comfort because whatever decadent behavior occurs will be cured with our New Year’s resolutions. Eat, drink and be merry ‘cause we’ve got a plan! To justify our irresponsible behavior, we have to balance it with an antidote, and nothing fits that bill more than a New Year’s resolution. We declare: “Starting the 1st, my goal is to lose X pounds and to do so, I’m going to stop doing XYZ and start doing ABC!” In summary, we’ve set a goal based on eliminating all the things we like being

replaced by a bunch of things we don’t. What could go wrong?

A Fresh Fitness Start Try this, instead: Don’t commit yourself to stopping all the things you like. Rather, commit to starting something good for you. Start simple: Commit to a brisk 30-minute walk in your neighborhood three times a week. Better yet, get bundled up, invite a friend to join you and take to the beautiful boardwalk. When you’re done, envision that you have put something in your “body bank.” You’ve improved your health without diminishing your pleasure. Here’s what will happen: The days you

exercise will end with a sense of satisfaction. You’ll feel better because that’s what exercise does. This is the basis of “runners high.” Soon, it will likely occur to you that perhaps by stopping “XYZ” and increasing “ABC,” you’ll feel even better. One cardinal rule: Do not base your scoreboard on the scale. Losing weight the right way takes time. Instead, reflect on all the health benefits that come with a lifestyle based on healthy additions instead of forced subtractions. Jay Russell is a fishing and running enthusiast and can be found running the boards of the boardwalk early each morning.
