The Value of Sharing Our Stories

This morning, I was thrilled to hear that a national fashion magazine is returning to print. It’s a reminder that sometimes the old ways are the best ways. As I reflect on the past few months, I’m filled with pride at the stories we’ve had the privilege to share in Spring Lake magazine. These stories might have gone untold, but they’re now preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Lately, I’ve been seeing videos online of magazines that I loved growing up, the magazines that pushed me to choose a career in publishing. It’s amazing how they can transport you back in time. I can remember the music that was playing on the radio and the fashion trends of the day. These publications are like portals to the past, and I treasure them.

As we approach our seventh month of publishing Spring Lake, I want to take a moment to thank you for your support. It’s been an incredible journey so far, allowing us to connect with and understand our community on a deeper level.

I encourage you to take a moment to look around at your community, your friends and your neighbors. Everyone has a story worth telling. Let’s work together to create a lasting record of what makes our community so special: the people who live and work here, and those with a vision to make things better for us all. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to sharing more stories with you!

Warm regards,

A college admissions consultant shares insights and tips to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

INTERVIEW WITH KAREN ALI-McHUGH

Back-to-school for high school juniors and seniors takes on new meaning with college on the horizon. We talked to local expert Karen Ali-McHugh of KA College Solutions for helpful tips to get you started and keep you sane!

It’s not where, it’s when. Starting early and being proactive will help you navigate this process successfully. My advice to students is don’t wait until senior year to get involved! Pursue your interests and passions early and often, and stick with them. You will reflect on these experiences to identify what sets you apart when putting together your applications.

10 | SPRING LAKE

De-Stressing the College Search & a
Karen Ali-McHugh with her son Jack McHugh at a Butler University basketball game (left) and with her son Luke McHugh at Lafayette College (above). The college application process is an exciting time for families, but also can be intimidating and overwhelming. Where to start?
For parents and students, seeing college campuses in person is an essential part of the decision-making process. Start your visits no later than the spring of junior year to get a feel for the type of environment that makes your student the most comfortable.

What’s the best way to go about putting together a list of schools?

Start with the resources your school has available. Platforms like Naviance, Scoir and MaiaLearning can help you determine your likelihood of being admitted to any given school. They’ll tell you admission rates, average test scores and other relevant statistics for each college. Create a balanced list of schools that are highly rejective, target schools and likely schools to ensure you have options and minimize the risk of disappointment.

Working with an independent college advisor helps, too. A good counselor will get to know you and offer up schools you may not have considered to round out your list of right-fit schools.

Where do you think your expertise comes in handy the most?

Getting into the “perfect” college is a highstakes game. It can get emotional. I find it really helps parents and kids to have a sensible third party in the process. I always tell my kids: “You will land where you are meant to be.” That said, most of my students get into one or more of their top three schools.

And truthfully, avoiding frank discussions about money is a huge pitfall. College is a significant financial investment, and it’s crucial to have an open and honest discussion about budget. I make sure everyone is on the same page. I can tell you what to expect and how to make your dollars go the farthest.

All great points. Anything else you want to leave us with?

There’s so much more to say, but here are a few tips freshmen and sophomores can use now: Colleges value applicants who have challenged themselves academically. Take rigorous courses that align with your interests and demonstrate your intellectual curiosity. Engaging in challenging coursework not only showcases your abilities but also prepares you for the academic rigor of college. Oh, and try to enjoy this process. It can be fun, I swear!

Writer Dallas Hlatky had the pleasure of meeting Karen Ali-McHugh in the back garden of Artisan Spirit in Spring Lake. The rest is history!

Beaches From Above

Visiting a crowded beach at midday may not be any local’s idea of a good time, but for photographer Chloe Masco of Claudia Chloe Photography, it’s her favorite time to get the shot. The difference is that she is flying high above the sand in a doors-off helicopter, long camera lens poking out as far as possible without being disrupted by the wind.

You’ve probably seen her bright beach landscapes at makers markets or at her favorite place to pop up, Shore Pour in Sea Girt. Masco has been selling her photographs of local beaches since

2015. They are hard to miss, with their beautiful blues, pale sand and colorful umbrellas. They have a painterly quality, and only upon closer inspection, or when chatting with Masco, will most people realize they are photographs.

Masco, a born-and-bred Jersey Shore girl, always had a love of painting and studied fine arts at Brookdale Community College before transferring into the photography program at Monmouth University. In 2015, while still a student, she took a helicopter tour of Miami while on vacation and snapped

some photos with her first digital camera. She put a few prints in her friend’s store on the Asbury boardwalk, and they sold out in a weekend.

Even though her photography professor told her that no one would pass his class with photos of the beach (too easy, too obvious), Masco knew she was onto something. She chartered her first helicopter and shot the Jersey Shore beaches from the south tip of Ocean County all the way to Sandy Hook. Her prints have been a shore sensation ever since.

One of the benefits of selling her art at local markets and pop-ups is the interaction between artist and admirer. Customers come alive when they learn Masco hangs out of a helicopter to create her work, and Masco loves to hear why people choose to buy certain pieces. There’s usually a sentimental attachment to a landmark. The Manasquan Inlet has seen the most first kisses and proposals. Some folks look for themselves at their favorite beach spots.

In fact, Masco always posts on her Instagram account when she’ll be flying so fans of her work can go out and be captured.

She knows every inch of the shoreline from a perspective lifelong beachgoers might not recognize: “I’ve never sat on the beach in Sea Girt, but I could tell you every single block by the shape of the jetty.”

Aside from the beautiful colors and beachy scenes, Masco thinks there may be a deeper reason her work resonates with so many. “When you step back as far as I do into the sky, the perspective makes it look like it makes sense. You can find order in the chaos. The way people gather, line up. Everyone’s doing what they are supposed to be doing. Everything falls into order. That’s what people like to see in my pictures, and I think that’s why they enjoy them.”

Bring Back the Butterflies

Monarch butterflies are critically endangered. Here are simple steps you can take to help.

The first cool nights of autumn call the monarch butterflies south. They bounce and flutter from flower to flower, dressed for the fall in orange, black and white. Since they can’t fly when the temperature drops below 55 degrees, they concentrate near warm fall coastal waters. They sip sugary nectar to store fat from a highway of goldenrod along the dunes.

At night and in the rain, they seek tall grass and the underside of leaves. Along the coast, they rest before crossing large bodies of

water like Delaware Bay, massing near Cape May like many migratory birds. They can travel 50 to 100 miles a day.

The monarch butterflies we see along New Jersey’s coast in September and October are unlike the generations before them. Their parents and grandparents fluttered around for about four weeks and laid about 500 eggs. This fall brood will need to survive eight to nine months to make the journey back to central Mexico to overwinter before laying the next generation.

Sadly, habitat destruction and pesticide use have cut the eastern monarch population by over 80 percent. If you like Jersey tomatoes and fresh summer blueberries, it’s important to have a healthy population of bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. About 75 percent of our produce needs a pollinator to mature.

Fewer than 20 years ago, our coast was filled with these fluttering travelers. Jackie Joule and Maggie Bossett, both long-term Sea Girt residents, remember watching them mass in large groups, and they have the pictures to prove it.

Joule and Bossett are part of an education effort. They emphasize that we can grow native plants around our homes to restore some of what has been lost. They have presented at the Sea Girt Library and shared their knowledge with Holly Club members. “Milkweed is critical,” says Joule. “Butterfly bushes have become popular and do provide food for adults. But butterfly weed and milkweed are needed in local gardens for the caterpillars. It’s easy to dedicate a small area of your property to native plants and to avoid pesticides that kill the good bugs along with the pests.” She maintains a

native landscape on her small plot on Trenton Boulevard. “Even the right natives in pots will help.”

As the coast has been developed with larger homes and less open space, New Jersey has lost milkweed plants, which are the only food of the monarch caterpillars. The black and yellow striped larva grow 20 times their size from the protein in the milkweed leaves. Native nectarproducing plants provide the energy adult butterflies need for their 1,500-mile journey. The native plants are important as butterfly instinct attracts them to New Jersey plants and they avoid imports.

Vincent Dicks is a Sea Girt author who specializes in writing about the history of the Jersey Shore. Find more information at vincentdicks.com.

A new focus on native planting in public spaces is helping. There are three recently planted pollinator gardens in Sea Girt at the entrance to the National Guard Training Center, Edgemere Park and along the Station Park bike trail, with support from the Sea Girt Conservancy. The Garden Club of Spring Lake has a native plant garden at the recycling center. There is another at the tip of Lake Como and one in Manasquan on Route 71, which is maintained by the Sea

Lavender Garden Club. Public gardens help provide stopping points, but homeowners can do so much more.

People are often frustrated with issues they can do nothing about. The Bossetts’ little garden and walkway is alive with yellow lantanas and purple salvia, with milkweed behind them. A monarch floats to the pots on the steps to Bossett’s house on its way to Mexico. “Plant native and plant milkweed,” says Bossett. “Saving monarchs starts in your own yard.”

Witchy Women Doing Good

The algorithm works in mysterious ways. Four years ago, Dawn McDonough was scrolling through Facebook when a picture of three witches paddleboarding on a lake in Germany caught her eye. She sent the post to a friend and suggested they don their finest witch hats and recreate the scene in Spring Lake. Not long after, McDonough and 15 of her friends met at the lake in witch and warlock costumes, had themselves a nice paddle, drew a good bit of attention from onlookers and knew they had something. They decided they would do it again the following October and paddle for a cause.

October 14 at 10 a.m. will mark the 4th annual Witches Paddle for a Cause in Spring Lake. McDonough, executive director of the Spring Lake Business Improvement District and a realtor at D’Amico & McConnell Realtors, partnered with her friend Kerry Tice, also a realtor at D’Amico & McConnell Realtors, to organize a much bigger event. Paddlers pay a small registration fee and are encouraged to raise funds for a charity that McDonough and Tice choose each year. They always donate to a local Monmouth County organization, with each organization having personal ties back to Spring Lake.

Costumed paddleboarders in Spring Lake raise funds for area organizations each October.

Co-organizers Dawn McDonough (left) and Kerry Tice attach brooms to their paddles.

Supporting Local Organizations

Past years’ funds have gone to Interfaith Neighbors, founded by a longtime Spring Lake resident.

Next, it was the Ashley Lauren Foundation, which helps families with children who have cancer. This year, proceeds will benefit Friends of the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center. Each year, paddlers have raised between $10,000 and $12,000—a truly impressive feat as the event caps out at 175 participants!

That’s a lake full of witches and warlocks. Paddlers go all out with their festive garb. A personal favorite of the organizers last year was the woman who had a dog skeleton on

her board. Then there was a witch whose board carried a cauldron with actual smoke coming out of it. McDonough and Tice can be identified by the brooms they attach to their paddles—what better way for the witches in charge to set themselves apart?

A few other New Jersey towns have organized similar events, which delights McDonough and Tice. What’s next? Next year will bring the 5th annual Witches Paddle, (check www.visitspringlake.com for updates). But the wheels are always turning. Says McDonough: “You may see a bunch of Santas on the lake one of these days.” One can only ho-ho-hope!

A Comprehensive Guide to Restoring Your Smile

called osseointegration, providing a solid foundation for the prosthetic tooth.

Once the implant has fused with the bone, an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment serves as a connector between the implant and the prosthetic tooth. Finally, a custom-made crown is securely placed on the abutment, creating a natural-looking and fully functional tooth.

Recovery and Healing

Following dental implant surgery, a short period of healing is necessary for optimal results. During this time, the implant gradually fuses with the jawbone. Patients may experience some swelling, discomfort and minor bleeding, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication and proper oral hygiene practices.

Dental implants have revolutionized the field of restorative dentistry, offering a long-lasting and natural-looking solution for replacing missing teeth. In this article, we will delve into the world of dental implants, discussing their benefits, the implantation process and the recovery period.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide numerous advantages over traditional tooth replacement options. They are designed to mimic the natural tooth structure, both in appearance and function. By integrating with the jawbone, implants offer stability and prevent bone loss, preserving facial structure. Furthermore, implants can enhance

speech, restore chewing efficiency and boost self-confidence.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is typically performed in several stages and requires the expertise of an experienced oral surgeon or implant specialist. The process begins with a comprehensive dental examination, including X-rays and digital imaging, to assess the jawbone’s health and determine the optimal treatment plan.

The first stage of the procedure involves placing the dental implant, which is a small titanium post, into the jawbone surgically. Over the next few months, the implant bonds with the bone through a process

The duration of the healing process varies for everyone, but it generally takes several months for the implant to fully integrate with the bone. Throughout this period, regular checkups with the dental professional are crucial to monitor the healing progress.

Dental implants offer a remarkable solution for individuals seeking to restore their smile and regain optimal oral functionality. With their natural appearance and longterm benefits, dental implants have become the gold standard in tooth replacement options. By consulting with a skilled dental professional, patients can embark on a transformative journey toward a confident and radiant smile.

How To Make Laundry Easier

What should you consider when buying a washing machine, dryer or washer/dryer combo? From load capacity to energy efficiency, brand choices and installation, here’s an informative guide from the professionals at Town Appliance to help you make informed decisions for your laundry needs.

When in the market for a washing machine, first consider the load capacity; larger families need higher load capacity machines. Look for energy-efficient models with Energy Star ratings to save on utility bills and reduce environmental impact. Variable spin speeds and wash cycles cater to different fabric types and soil levels, enhancing cleaning performance. Front-load machines are known for water and energy efficiency, while top-loaders offer convenience and typically have shorter cycle times. In terms of leading manufacturer brands, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Maytag, GE and Bosch are highly regarded for their quality and innovation.

Before you shop, measure your laundry

space accurately and ensure proper plumbing and electrical connections are available. Standard washing machine height is 34-39”, and width is typically 27” with variations of 2 to 3 inches depending on brand and type. Professional installation can help guarantee the correct setup, adherence to warranty terms and optimal machine performance.

Quick and Gentle Drying

When purchasing a dryer, look for moisture sensors to prevent overdrying and save energy. Consider heat settings for various fabrics and load sizes. Multiple brands, including GE, Electrolux, LG and Frigidaire, offer reliable options with varying capacities and efficiency ratings.

To ensure proper ventilation and electrical connections for safety and optimal performance, consider professional installment. Standard full-size dryers are 27” wide, but larger residential models can reach up to 29” with a depth ranging from 41” to 44” plus 4” extra for vented dryers. Dryers can be gas or electric. Electric dryers

can be vented or ventless. Electric dryers require a 240-volt outlet, while gas dryers need a 120-volt outlet and a gas hookup.

When shopping for a washer/dryer combo, prioritize features like load capacity, energy efficiency and wash/ dry cycle variety. Ensure proper space and connections in your laundry area, and consider professional installation for warranty maintenance. Combo units save space, but they may have smaller capacities compared to separate machines. Choose models that suit your household size and laundry needs. Look for moisture sensors to prevent overdrying. This feature will reduce energy consumption and wear on your clothes. These units often feature steam cycles for sanitization and convenience, along with noise reduction technology for quiet operation, making them a practical choice for compact spaces.

Practicality is the linchpin to achieving efficient and effective laundry care. Armed with these insights, you’re poised to make informed decisions that align with your laundry needs.

Thunder Road Books recommends new novels that are sure to boost your adrenaline.

of Maplewood. This twisty, slow-burn suspense is bingeworthy and unputdownable! After her former career as a nurse ends abruptly and suspiciously, Margo pivots to working for the local library. Patricia, an aspiring writer, has recently moved to town and also works at the library. Both women begin questioning each other’s backstories, and, as a reader, it’s hard to know whom to trust!

“SILVER NITRATE”

Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an author that you must put on your radar if she’s not already there. “Silver Nitrate” takes place in Mexico City. The main character is a sound engineer who gets the opportunity to work with a horror film director. However, something is amiss on this set. Dark and suspenseful—perfect for this time of year!

close relationship with his grandfather. Knowing that made me love it even more!

“THE SEPTEMBER HOUSE”

Ghosts, paranormal activity and a disappearing husband—the premise for a good, haunting read! Margaret and her husband, Hal, have purchased their forever home. However, every September, the walls drip blood and the former owners visit in their ghostly forms. When Hal goes missing, Margaret enlists the help of their daughter to find him. This one will give you goose bumps for sure!

“SLIME DOESN’T PAY!”

As the weather begins to change and a chill enters the air, it is time for us at Thunder Road Books to transition to our thriller and spooky reads!

“I DIDN’T DO IT”

convention of thriller and mystery writers. When bestselling author Kristin Bailey is found dead in her hotel room, four rival authors are all suspects. Hendricks gets us every single time. This one has quite the twist!

“HOW CAN I HELP YOU?”

Another New Jersey favorite here. “How Can I Help You?” is the latest novel from Laura Sims

“FLIPPING BOXCARS”

We mostly know Cedric the Entertainer for his comedy; “Flipping Boxcars” is his literary debut. This story tells the tale of a crime caper against the backdrop of the Depression and World War II. In reading about this novel, I learned that Cedric was inspired by his

“Slime Doesn’t Pay” is the middle-grade thriller of the season. Amy thinks her brother, Arnie, is a pest. When she decides to play a prank on him with slime, she never imagined he would turn into a monster right in front of her eyes! She and her best friend must stop Arnie from terrorizing their town and, eventually, turn him back into her little brother. Bonus on this pick: Thunder Road Books has scored a limited number of signed copies.

Reuniting After 45 Years

The Saint Catharine School class of 1978 had a wonderful time catching up at their 45-year reunion—their first—on Sept. 16, with 40 people in attendance.

Prior to the reunion, a group of alumni visited St. Catharine for a tour led by current students. It was a great opportunity for them to reminisce and see how the school has changed.

If you’re interested in the 50th reunion, please reach out to Francis Murphy at frank4434@yahoo.com or Ellen Rose Micioni Easton at eeaston1@verizon.net.
