studio for everyone provides a community—whether people walk, run or jog. What gives her great pleasure is seeing her clients running and completing the town’s 5K race. Her goal is to inspire others to start their own businesses. Kaplen Jewish Community Center ( JCC), a stalwart supporter of Tenafly and the surrounding community, offers programs from early childhood to senior services, encompassing sports, art, dance and theater, among others. Two thousand people a day take advantage of these programs, and the JCC has evolved to support the wellbeing of the entire community through its myriad offerings. More recently, in trying to respond to community needs, JCC provided care to 200 children displaced by the war in Israel in addition to offering accommodations to those who need them. CEO Steve Rogers does a significant amount of fundraising to ensure that finances don’t prevent someone from participating at Kaplen JCC. La Promenade, a culinary staple of Tenafly since 1997, is run by Corey Payraudeau, his brother Julian and their mother, Lori, who originally started the business with her husband, Yves, in 1985 in Closter. Starting as a gourmet retail bakery specializing in French pastries, breads, croissants, pâtés and cheese, it wasn’t long before soups and entrée items were added. Word spread, and off-premise catering evolved for corporate events, private parties, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and more. As chairperson of the Tenafly Welcome! Committee, Roxana Surrey works to ensure all new residents feel at home right away. A 50-year resident of Tenafly, Roxana taught Spanish at Tenafly High School, DwightEnglewood and Horace Mann before retiring and moving into real estate. She got involved in the Welcome! Committee when Peter Rustin resurrected it during his first term as mayor. In addition to providing information, the committee welcomes new members to join. Wishing everyone a very happy holiday season and New Year!
The end of the year is a good time to reflect on everyone who has participated in the first four issues of Tenafly magazine and thank them. A particularly large shout-out goes to Mayor Mark Zinna, who has been so supportive and generous in writing a monthly piece, Mayor’s Corner. It has been such a pleasure working with everyone, getting to know them and discovering what brought them to Tenafly. When speaking to people, the overwhelming reason I hear is that Tenafly projects a great sense of community, safety and desire for people to succeed. Michele Ross and her family moved to Tenafly because of that sense of community the town represents. She then started her law firm, M. Ross & Associates, LLC, specializing in business law. She helps local businesses get started and helps established businesses develop plans in case their circumstances change. Gia Alvarez was also drawn to Tenafly because of its sense of community and small-town feel. What was missing was the camaraderie of a running community (she had previously led runners’ clubs), which led her to found Juma Fit. This treadmill

Welcome to Tenafly! How the chairperson of the Tenafly Welcome! Committee makes sure new residents are embraced with open arms BY ANNMARIE MARTIN
INTERVIEW WITH
ROXANA SURREY
As a Brooklyn transplant,
When did you move to New Jersey?
What was your profession?
Fifty-four years ago. When I got married, we moved to Fort Lee briefly, then to Tenafly, and we’ve been in our house for 50 years.
I was a high school Spanish teacher. I worked at Tenafly High School and Horace Mann School, and then I was at DwightEnglewood for about 14 years before I retired and got into real estate. [Surrey works at Prominent Properties/Sotheby’s International Realty in Tenafly.]
When did you get involved with the Welcome! Committee? When former Mayor Peter Rustin resurrected it during his first term. Several of us volunteered, and many of us original members still serve on it today. The committee suggested that I take over when the former chairperson retired from the role.

Roxana Surrey wants to make sure all new residents feel as at home as she has come to be as a now-longtime resident of Tenafly and chairperson of the city’s Welcome! Committee. As the year comes to a close, she reflects on the life and family she’s built—and what she wants those just starting out here to know.

What does your job as chairperson entail? We introduce ourselves with a postcard to residents who moved in during the prior month telling them who we are, and it includes the trash pickup schedule. You can also find lots of information for new residents on tenaflynj.org and the Tenafly Welcome page on Facebook, including school registration info and an events calendar. We host a few events a year, the main one being in September, outdoors at Peace Plaza. All new residents are sent invitations, La Promenade caters the food and high school musicians play music in the background. It’s just lovely! We also hand out welcome bags during the event filled with important literature, coupons from local businesses, a form to fill out for a free one-year membership at the Tenafly Nature Center and lots more.
The Tenafly Welcome! Committee hosts numerous events during the year, including an outdoor gathering in September where the group gives newcomers welcome bags filled with information about the community and coupons for local businesses.
What else do new residents have to look forward to?
What would you like new residents to know?
They can anticipate more gatherings like those we’ve hosted at the fire and ambulance departments that include pizza and Kona Ice. And this coming year, we’ll have an event at the Nature Center, where residents can get a guided tour and have more good eats.
That we welcome them on the committee! They know best what those just moving to town might need. As a group we speak many languages, so if anyone is not quite comfortable with English, we can provide translation. Don’t be shy.

‘A Gathering Place for the Entire Community’ Kaplen Jewish Community Center offers popular programs with an all-inclusive spirit. BY JENNA DEMMER
At first glance, what many visitors find most striking about Kaplen Jewish Community Center ( JCC) on the Palisades is its size. The center, found on Clinton Avenue, boasts nearly 200,000 square feet of indoor space. Even more impressive than the center’s physical size, however, is its diversity of programs—and its all-inclusive spirit. The JCC offers a stunning array of programs for people of all ages—from early childhood education to senior services and everything in between.
There’s something for everyone, whether they’re interested in sports, art, dance, theater, education or something entirely different. It’s no surprise that more than 2,000 people come through the center’s doors each day. Interestingly, many of these people aren’t Jewish. “Almost a third of the membership isn’t Jewish,” says Steve Rogers, CEO of Kaplen JCC. “It’s not just a gathering place for Jews. It’s a gathering place for the entire community.”

Wide-Ranging Services The Kaplen JCC was founded in Englewood in 1950 as part of the broader JCC movement. Explosive growth and the need for a larger location brought the center to Tenafly in 1981. In the decades since, it has expanded “into a more typical community center,” says Rogers. Its mission, which is rooted in Jewish values, is to support the well-being of the entire community. It does this, in part, through its variety of programs and activities. Depending on your interests, you may enjoy the center’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities, where you can play basketball, pickleball, racquetball and more. There are dazzling swimming pools both inside and outside as well as luxurious spa services. Dance, drama and fitness classes are available for both children and adults. Adults can attend lectures and book clubs, embark on day trips or even sit down and learn watercolor painting. According to Rogers, the breadth of activities is what really sets the Kaplen JCC apart from most other facilities in the area and around the country. “It’s what I tell people who come to look at our early childhood center. Certainly, some of the other schools in the area are fantastic,” Rogers says. “[But] this is the
place where after the school day is over, you can get a private swim lesson or ballet lesson or do some painting or engage in some other athletics.” While there are other schools and tennis courts, and even other Jewish Community Centers, “Our JCC in Tenafly is the place that has it all,” Rogers says. Many people become members of the Kaplen JCC to have better access to its countless services. Some offerings are so competitive that membership is a requirement. An example is early childhood education, which is close to capacity. Other offerings, such as camp, have enough capacity that you don’t need to be a member to join, although members pay lower fees. An even greater benefit to being a member, though, is supporting the JCC’s service to the community.
Community Commitments “Our role is to be whatever our community needs,” says Rogers. Kaplen JCC recognizes that sometimes what the community needs is to gather together. “Three days after the October 7th massacre, we opened our doors for a community gathering,” he says. “There were 3,500 people here.” What’s more, the JCC has provided care to more than 200 children displaced by the
war in Israel via its Heart to Heart program. “This JCC has been a magnet for families since the massacre,” adds Rogers. The center also seeks to serve the wider community in Tenafly and the surrounding areas. In the beginning of the pandemic, it sent out iPads to older adults in the area and, when necessary, taught them how to use the technology. Among other offerings, the center provides scholarships, support groups, programs for people with disabilities, and services for older adults and their caregivers. It also offers accommodations for people who need them, as inclusivity is one of the cornerstones of the JCC. To this end, the JCC works to ensure cost isn’t a barrier to people who seek out services or even membership. The center welcomes all—not just those who can afford certain fees. “Over the last two years, we have averaged $2 million a year in financial aid,” says Rogers. “We do a significant amount of fundraising so that we can ensure that finances are never a reason to not be able to participate at Kaplen JCC.”

Friendly Fitness At Juma Fit, Gia Alvarez aims to create an atmosphere of community, not competition. BY JENNA DEMMER
When you take a class at Juma Fit, Gia Alvarez’s
treadmill studio, you may notice something unusual: All of the treadmills face the center of the room, and there are no mirrors in sight. As much as this arrangement sets Juma Fit apart from other fitness studios, it brings clients together. This seemingly small detail reflects Alvarez’s entire vision for her business. “I am trying to create that communal feeling so you’re looking at the energy around you rather than staring at yourself in a mirror,” says Alvarez. “That is prime to the core of what we created all of this for.” To Alvarez, this key feature is what ties Juma Fit together with Tenafly as a whole. When Alvarez and her husband ventured out of New York City to find a new home back in 2014, they were drawn to Tenafly’s immutable beauty. But it is Tenafly’s welcoming community that has kept them planted here ever since.

Laying Down Roots Alvarez grew up in California, but, interestingly enough, she doesn’t miss it. Since moving to New York City for a job in 2006, she has grown to prefer the East Coast for its seasons. She lived in New York City for eight years before searching for a place to live in New Jersey with her husband, whose family lives in Bergen County. While driving around the area, Alvarez and her husband thought Tenafly seemed like an “adorable little town” and decided to start out
there and see what would happen. It wasn’t until they moved that they got a real taste of Tenafly’s neighborly atmosphere. She made friends, got settled and laid down roots very quickly. “Tenafly is so beautiful throughout the seasons, but, more than that, I love the small-town feel,” says Alvarez. “I think that’s my favorite thing about Tenafly. My kids have a ton of friends here, and I just think that it feels very homey and safe and like it’s kind of your world.” But as much as she loved living
here, something seemed missing: a tight-knit circle of runners. Back in New York City, Alvarez had led running clubs that met weekly. Friendships had developed and relationships blossomed. Members had grown together both as runners and as people. “I missed that feeling of a runners’ community when I came here,” Alvarez explains. This desire for a local runners’ community gave birth to Juma Fit, which Alvarez describes as being like another child of hers.
Alvarez, who moved with her family to Tenafly by way of California and New York, quickly put down roots and contributed to the area’s fitness community.

Birth of a Business When Alvarez came up with the idea of Juma Fit, she was plagued with fear that other people would not be as excited about it as she was. These anxieties dissolved swiftly when she opened her business. “People came in and celebrated and talked about it, supported it and brought their friends,” says Alvarez. “That feeling of community quickly happened within Juma.” Alvarez tries to uphold the sense of community by hiring only the warmest, most welcoming mentors. She hopes that she and the people at Juma can help clients view fitness not as a chore but as a lifestyle. Part of this involves letting yourself move at your own pace. “It doesn’t matter if you’re running or jogging or walking—you’re all in that room in that community together,” says Alvarez. Alvarez takes feedback and suggestions to heart as she strives to make Juma Fit a pleasant and fruitful environment for all. For instance, one client’s suggestion led to boot camp classes that have become very popular. These classes joined the ranks of offerings such as tread classes, hike classes, sculpt classes and Pilates. Alvarez’s favorite offering is the youth programming that includes a speed academy and performance academy for children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 18. Alvarez finds it rewarding to see clients of all ages grow in their skills and meet their goals. “One of the most fun things that we do every year is [being] part of the town 5K,” says Alvarez. “Seeing the people who come through my doors running out there and completing their first 5K... that brings me so much joy.” Alvarez’s desire to serve the community goes beyond the walls
of Juma Fit. She serves on Tenafly’s Recreation Board, which manages local activities such as sports, art classes and summer camp. Alvarez also wants to support other small businesses in Tenafly and hopes that her own success story can lead to others. “Tenafly needs more small businesses that drive the community to a higher place,” she says. “I want to give back and grow the possibilities. Let’s start a trend here.”

A Lawyer Who Means Business Tenafly attorney Michele Ross wields big-city legal skills to help local entrepreneurs. BY D. FLYNN

Starting a new business is
challenging, says longtime lawyer Michele Ross, but consulting with an attorney beforehand can help any entrepreneur navigate unforeseen obstacles. As complicated as it is to start a business, Tenafly residents have an advantage by virtue of the town itself and its supportive customer base. “Tenafly has a strong sense of community,” Ross says. “Starting a business here is welcomed with open arms because people want to see the town thrive. A new retail store or a coffee shop garners a lot of attention, and people get excited about it.” Ross and her husband, Dan, came to Tenafly in 2007 in part because of the easy access to New York, where Ross was working as a litigation attorney at Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP before founding M. Ross & Associates, LLC, and because of the area’s strong Jewish community and resources. Ross has cultivated her law firm alongside raising her two children, Harper and Jagger, now in sixth grade and ninth grade, both of whom have been active in the town’s recreation and travel programs. “A great attribute of Tenafly is its small-town makeup; it is a
20-22 Tenafly_AttorneyRoss_1223_Final.indd 21
wonderful environment for kids to exercise independence,” she says. “My children are now at ages where they can take advantage of the town’s resources. My son and his friends will play wiffle ball at the school and then have dinner at Mel’s Butcher Box. My daughter will walk to town to shop and meet up with friends. It’s a safe community where kids can be kids, and as a parent, that’s very comforting.”
A Good Fit M. Ross & Associates, LLC represents a variety of privately held businesses. The firm has an active state and federal litigation practice focusing on commercial business disputes and also advises clients on a range of contractual matters, the protection of business assets and employment-related concerns. “As a Tenafly resident, having the opportunity to help a local business owner with the legal aspects of a new venture and seeing that business succeed and have a positive impact on the community is truly rewarding,” says Ross. Ross was first introduced to the legal profession as a teenager, when a family friend working as in-house counsel for NBC brought her along
for Take Your Daughter to Work Day. The woman, a media attorney, covered everything from First Amendment issues to the review of scripts for “Saturday Night Live.” “There was an energy and an excitement to the legal work,” Ross says. “The way the attorneys engaged with one another made a huge impression on me.” Ross went on to major in political science and journalism, and obtained her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 2002. Though she did not specialize in the same type of law as her onetime mentor, she found that her personality was well suited to the profession, particularly the skills needed to become a litigator. “I enjoy the challenge of a complex legal problem, and there is nothing I love more than advocating an artful solution for my clients,” she says. “I don’t easily accept no.” Advocacy has become a core theme of her business, which Ross believes has given her a reputation for being relentless in protecting clients. Her role is to advise and prevent liabilities. This builds long-term relationships because clients trust and rely on her legal guidance.

“Tenafly has a great sense of community. Starting a business here is welcomed with open arms because people want to see the town thrive.” - Michele Ross
Preventing Problems According to Ross, her work is largely preventive. The firm’s role is to develop and implement legal strategies that safeguard clients’ long-term business needs. Often business owners think they don’t need a lawyer to get involved. This is usually because they are entrenched in the familiarity of their day-to-day operations. This works, says Ross, right up until something goes wrong. Anticipating a problem beforehand benefits both new and existing businesses. The more your business evolves, the more
exposure you have to legal challenges. How well they are managed makes all the difference. After 20 years, Ross continues to look ahead to future professional challenges and the ability to mentor the next generation of lawyers. “In this profession, your ability to see problems crystalizes with time,” says Ross. “Having perspective is a really exciting strength and a value-add for clients.”

both a business and a family. Long a local favorite for gourmet food, La Promenade is older than two of its owners, Corey and Julian Payraudeau. The brothers grew up frequenting the establishment while their parents, Lori and Yves, served the community. Opened by Lori Payraudeau in Closter in 1985, La Promenade moved to Tenafly in 1996. Now, 38 years after the business was founded, the brothers are on-site daily as its hands-on, active managers in what remains a family enterprise. Julian jokes that longtime customers often remind him of times they stopped in when Lori was pregnant with him and Corey. A graduate of Johnson and Wales, Julian joined La Promenade in 2010. Corey, with a background in business, joined in 2017. With her two sons at the controls and their expertise in food, operations and customer relations, Lori has seen the business she founded grow threefold.

An Expanding Legacy “Every day is different,” says Julian. “No two days are the same.” He credits his mother for not only establishing the business but also finding a suitable space that the trio could grow into at their quaint location in town, 137 Piermont Road. Shortly after moving there, Lori bought the standalone building in 1997 and made it La Promenade’s permanent home. La Promenade is not an eat-in establishment. Instead, everything is prepared to go and for pickup. From its early days, La Promenade produced fresh food items such as chicken francaise, beef bourguignon and delicious soups, all made daily. As word of the specialty business spread, local restaurateurs and country-club chefs began reaching out for items like French desserts, sparking a wholesale bakery operation. Over time, off-premises operations increased, leading to full-service private home and corporate catering. Today, La Promenade offers high-end catering for private parties, weddings, bat mitzvahs, corporate events and more, with a product line of party goods and supplies that keep current with the seasons. La Promenade continues to feature a beautiful bakery where the family makes and sells desserts from pies and cakes (including custom cakes for weddings and birthdays) to daily customer favorites such as donuts and croissants. Fresh foods are replenished every day. Frozen foods—including appetizers, entrees and child-friendly fare—are prepared by a team of chefs with a cumulative 275-plus years of experience.
Payraudeau brothers Julian (middle) and Corey (bottom) joined their mother, Lori, in running La Promenade after having grown up with the family baking and catering business.

“Every day is different. No two days are the same.” - Julian Payraudeau
Catering to Customers’ Needs The in-house menu of salads, soups, sandwiches, personal pizzas, lunch and dinner meals changes daily and became especially popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the lockdown years were tough on many businesses, family members now feel the service they provided during the crisis contributed to their current success. Post-pandemic, La Promenade has taken a less-is-more attitude that has further boosted the eatery’s popularity by emphasizing the high-quality foods and desserts customers like best. In catering to families and companies alike, La Promenade offers a range of services that includes providing party rentals, chefs, bartenders, flowers and any other accommodation customers may desire
for life’s memorable moments. You can pull up at the family’s store seven days a week (and quickly find parking outside) or visit La Promenade’s website (www.laprom. com) to place an order online. The trio continues working together to bring joy into the Tenafly community and its surrounding towns, recognizing that the addition of each brother brought fresh ideas and generated more business. Each member of the Payraudeau family has something special to offer, and there is a joy surrounding their store—perhaps not surprising for a business built by a mother and her sons. Randi Corbo is a Bergen County resident and a proud mother of four. She has a long history in fashion editorial work, writing for several publications over her years in the business.

Energize Your 2024
These simple changes can supercharge your physical, mental and cardiovascular health in the year ahead. Resolution: 2024 will be your
year—the one in which you get out of any rut you may be in and create new, healthier habits. Your two key tools: movement and food. Exercise improves cardiovascular health and boosts energy. Food is fuel, and the right foods provide nutrients the body needs to repair, heal and stay strong. Here’s how to kick-start your journey. START SMALL. People often 1 see the best results when they

exercise buddy makes it easier to keep going, as does using a personal trainer. Trainers often can provide one-on-one or small-group guidance. If you have a condition such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease or Parkinson’s, or have had weight loss surgery, you may be able to find sessions tailored for people with those health concerns. It’s usually not enough to say, “I want to lose weight” or “I want to be healthier,” experts say. Instead, think more along the lines of, “I want to lose 20 pounds by next January by doing X, Y and Z.”
builds new habits by adding them to existing actions. Booking appointments? Add exercise to your calendar as with any other priority. Filling your plate? Serve vegetables first. Grabbing keys to go out? Clip them to a packed gym bag so you’ll have it with you.

favor products higher in fiber and lower in sugar and fat. High-fiber foods make you feel more satisfied so you eat less.
CHOOSE “GOOD” SUGAR. 6 Sugar from an orange is beneficial;
sugar from orange candy or soda, not so much. All sugar provides fuel for the body, but naturally occurring sugars such as those in fruits are metabolized in healthier ways than processed sugar. GO NUTS. Nuts are a great

healthy fats—vital for cellular turnover, hormone synthesis and bowel health. Other sources include sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and flaxseeds, which can be added to yogurt and oatmeal to pump up their nutritional value. EMBRACE YOUR ROOTS. 8 Root vegetables such as yams,
beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas and parsnips are perfect for soups, stews and frittatas—dishes that are great places to hide a lot of vegetables or to try a vegetable for the first time. EAT THE RAINBOW. Every 9 color of fruit or vegetable has a
different nutrient profile, and the more you mix things up, the more your body will benefit.
