Modern and minimalistic fivepocket jeans are the cornerstone of this Los Angeles-based company, and the makers do them well. Each pair of S.M.N. denim features clean silhouettes and handcrafted washes in quality materials that will last for years. The pants combine the Japanese denim aesthetic with American craftsmanship; choose the wash, color and style that works for you. Need assistance in finding your perfect pair? Luxury clothing brand Ploumanac’h combines the best of both worlds, er, countries—its fine collection of T-shirts, polos and more is made in Italy, but inspired by a village port of the same name that’s located in the Brittany region of France. This family-owned company produces all its garments with locally sourced products and natural fibers to help lower its carbon footprint and better the environment. The result are tees, polos, shirts, jackets and resort wear made with amazing textiles and vibrant dyes. A NEW TASTE TO TRY

There’s a new kid on our block, and we’re extending a warm welcome. The Maidstone 1845 is a brand-new American restaurant that just opened in Woodbury Town Plaza. It’s a farm-to-table eatery, meaning the chefs source produce and products from local farms to inspire their menu. Choose from small plates like a vegan Caesar salad to entrées such as beef short rib or pan-seared halibut. Finish off your meal with an apple and hazelnut tart or spiced sugar doughnut, and choose from a wide array of inventive craft cocktails, white or red wines or an IPA to complement your courses. So during your next outing, treat yourself to a shopping spree at Woodbury Mens Shop followed by a stellar meal at The Maidstone 1845. You won’t even need to park your car twice.

COME ON OVER!

As we all know, Long Island weather this time of year is unpredictable—brisk mornings can quickly give way to sweltering temps in the afternoon. The solution: an overshirt. These garments are lightweight outerwear pieces that are ideal for layering in spring. Of course, we aren’t talking about your dad’s overshirt: Today’s version is reimagined with a sartorial fit, made with luxury fabrics and includes features like side entry pockets and double flap chest pockets. They pair well with jeans, perfect for today’s casual lifestyle that allows guys to wear a nice pair of denim to the office and to the best restaurants. One can be worn over your favorite tee or sport shirt—you can even try it with a dress shirt and tie when a sportcoat isn’t required. Ask a Woodbury Mens Shop associate to show you the latest overshirt styles from brands like Maurizio Baldassari, Luciano Barbera and Teleria Zed.

Jim Foley explains how to sail through life without giving offense. After wearing joggers and hoodies for the past two years, I’m finally heading back to the office. What should I wear? —Worried in Woodbury Most offices have adopted a business casual dress code. Instead of khakis and polo shirts, try a wellfitted sportcoat (especially if you meet with clients), an open collar sport shirt and the right tailored trousers. Skip the running shoes and wear a fashion sneaker, loafer or polished shoe—many of which are just as comfortable as your trusty pair of gym sneakers. Of course, pair your footwear with a matching belt. A lot of after-work socializing has returned, so on Fridays, swap the trousers for a hip pair of jeans and you’ll be ready to hit your favorite happy hour spot after work.

HIP-NOTIC

MUSIC DEAN BLUNT

Be aware of these four experimental musical artists, whose sounds are so contemplatively soothing they’re almost a jolt. By Harry Dowden Music can act as a refuge and a salve, for both creator and listener. Here are four artists whose inward gazes conjure up personal visions of inner peace and maybe spring’s renewal. Their work can serve as a haven in an uncertain world:

SERPENTWITHFEET

Josiah Wise has a voice that can fill up a room, whether that’s a late-night torch-song bar or a church sanctuary on an early Sunday morning. Trained in the gospel tradition and matured in the Philly and NYC art scenes, Wise marries his virtuosic vocal runs with heart-on-sleeve emotions. The introductory Blisters EP treats a breakup with the intensity of the end of days on “four ethers” and the Soil LP explores the complexities and contradictions of modern queer love through the bittersweet “bless ur heart.” The year 2021’s Deacon, however, finds the serpentwithfeet project at its most in-love, most at-peace, most celebratory yet. That theme of simple joy is continued with Wise’s other recent release, a cover of Labi Siffre’s “Bless the Telephone,” which pays honor to the grounding presence of a loved one’s voice. In a time where communication and connection can feel like precious commodities, Wise’s pure tones remind us to remain thankful. Domestic blisses: A cover sanctioned by the queen of sensuality herself, serpentwithfeet’s performance of Björk’s “Blissing Me” is an ode to the playlist as love letter.

BEVERLY GLENN-COPELAND

With penchants for down-tempo melancholia and artful piss-taking, London’s Dean Blunt has spent more than a decade crafting his own brand of hazy tunes and mysterious personae. A sense of quiet assurance pervades his catalogue, from early work with Inga Copeland as the electronic duo Hype Williams to production for A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean on the former’s album closer, “Purity.” While projects like The Redeemer sprawl and morph, 2021’s Black Metal 2 is Blunt’s most concise and direct release yet. “Dash Snow” isn’t out of place on any reverbsoaked smoke session playlist, but Blunt’s drawling assurances that things will be all right give it a weighted, tired contentment where other artists would just leave it at halfbaked vibes. On & on: Fan favorite hour-long loop “Stalker” conveys a host of amorphous moods through its repetition: the dread of a surveillance society, the watchful eye of God, the devotion bordering on obsession that marks intense love.

Slowly unfolding like petals of a cereus that blooms one night a year, the music of Beverly Glenn-Copeland exudes a sense of patient, calm wonder. Perhaps it’s fitting that his fame hasn’t flowered until recently, ushered out of relative obscurity into the place of post-genre elder statesman. Now a septuagenarian, Glenn-Copeland crafted 1986’s Keyboard Fantasies with computers in the winter woods of Ontario. Welcoming opener “Ever New” and meditative closer “Sunset Village” bookend the watershed collection of sincere electronic music. A documentary that shares the album title’s name chronicles this musician’s journey as a transmasculine black composer, and 2021’s Keyboard Fantasies Reimagined sees many of Glenn-Copeland’s big-name acolytes—Blood Orange, Bon Iver and Arca, to name three— put their spins on the influential work. Roots of the sound: “Deep River: Live at Le Guess Who?”, Glenn-Copeland’s powerful rendition of the black spiritual, pays homage to his late parents and reveals the timelessness of his voice and approach.

L’RAIN

Taja Cheek’s compositions are layered with the impasto brushstrokes of many paints. Most instruments under the sun, samples, loops, natural sounds, effects, etc.—her palette is not picky, and the result on tracks like “Two Face” on 2021’s Fatigue ebb and flow with an ocean of ideas. L’Rain’s 2017 self-titled debut was worldly yet internal, while the follow-up greatly expands the cast of collaborators and shimmers with the glow of collective creativity from collaged opener “Fly, Die” onwards. Track lengths are sequenced in a “short-then-long” approach, which assists the flow while never feeling disjointed: It still exists as a whole document, if a stream-of-consciousness one. The real joy in L’Rain’s music is the lack of second-guessing, a process whose discipline is the willingness to follow any spark. Real Textures: Cheek & Co.’s performance for KEXP shows that Fatigue isn’t just a “studio record,” but one that is tangible and tactile and exists through performance.

LEADING MAN

Eddie Redmayne This British actor with a multi-hued range also cuts a smart figure on the red carpet. Not bad for a guy who’s color-blind.

penchant for crewneck knits over slim-cut button-ups and is seldom seen without his signature structured collar, whether via a lapel on a jacket or a cowl on a sweater. And because some dress codes can be as unpredictable as London’s weather, layering is another of Redmayne’s everyday style go-tos; he’ll often wear a cardigan under a jacket or blazer and simply remove the coat should he feel overdressed. For more formal events, each of his many suits—most often by Prada, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford or Burberry—is tailored to fit him precisely, to the point of “almost hugging” his lanky 5-foot-11-inch frame. “I’ve always worn suits, so I’ve always felt at ease in them,” he told Men’s Health a few years back, perhaps recalling his teenage years at Eton College, where the dress code required starched collars and tailcoats. “My dad is a dapper man,” said Redmayne, setting up a sly selfmock. “He wears suits for work, so maybe wearing them makes me feel subconsciously like I have a proper job.” Then he slipped the Freudians more ammo: “A well-cut suit feels like armor. If it’s tailored to fit, you feel strong.” Strong in showbiz, just possibly, is taking Oscar home before you’re 35; Redmayne was the first male born in the 1980s to win the statuette. And that was no fluke; he nabbed another nomination the following year, controversially cast as a transgender woman in The Danish Girl, and got top billing in 2019’s period drama The Aeronauts. He also stars in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, a spin-off of Harry Potter, which is slated to resume this year with The Secrets of Dumbledore. Yet Redmayne doesn’t follow all Hollywood norms—he has no personal stylist, for example. Instead, Hannah Bagshawe, his publicist wife and the mother of his two children, has been dressing him for the red carpet. That’s why he informed the U.K.’s The Mirror back in 2016 that for his sartorial splendor “I can’t take much credit. “I’m color-blind,” Redmayne said with winning candor and humility, “so occasionally I’ll go for things that are slightly outlandish, and she’ll temper me back into the world of taste.”

Oscar-winning British actor Eddie Redmayne is most comfortable in a suit—and a very slim-fitting one at that. “I like to feel the strength of the garment,” he says.

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

British actor Eddie Redmayne wasn’t defeated when he was excluded from the Best Actor category at last year’s Academy Awards. His portrayal of radical activist Tom Hayden in The Trial of the Chicago 7 won critical acclaim but couldn’t score him a nomination for his second trophy. He won the award in 2014 for playing physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Two paired Oscars would looked nice on the mantel—and Redmayne knows he’ll have many more opportunities to do it. Score Redmayne’s accent and defined cheekbones on the plus side for a style icon; his freckles, slender build and so-called “bedhead” maybe not so much. But, likely or not, this talented Brit has combined an already-impressive roster of thespian credits (he just turned 40) with a rep for choosing impeccable clothing and wearing it impeccably. Edward John David Redmayne grew up in London and attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School for the performing arts from the age of 10. He got his professional start in theater on London’s West End, and did stints on television before landing roles in films such as two in 2008, The Yellow Handkerchief and The Other Boleyn Girl. On stage in London, in 2009, he played a fictional assistant to painter Mark Rothko in a play fittingly titled Red. Three years later his star was rising, with a stint in the film My Week with Marilyn and his breakout role in the star-studded Les Misérables in 2012. By then, the world knew Redmayne could act and sing, but the fellow had a knack for style too. British fashion powerhouse Burberry hired him for its spring/summer 2012 campaign; in the years following he was named to the “best-dressed” lists in both Vanity Fair and GQ, became an ambassador for the Swiss watch brand Omega and was chosen as Business Insider’s Most Stylish Man in the World Right Now. Yep, the entire world. The Brit has been touted for his classic, cool style, his innate ability to look put together on even the most mundane occasions, such as when traveling from LHR to LAX, as he often does. Redmayne has a

STYLE WATCH

double down

Must a double-breasted jacket mean a formal look? Not at all, declares a fashion expert. In fact, it can be more versatile than you ever suspected. Check out these livelier possibilities. “Fashion,” writes Scott Schuman, “is about making yourself happy and expressing yourself.” The photographer, fashion editor and blogger applies this philosophy to the double-breasted (DB) jacket (and much more) in his book, The Sartorialist Man: Inspiration Every Man Wants, Education Every Man Needs (Rizzoli 2020). There are “rules” about the DB, of course, and Schuman’s approach is neither to ignore them nor to follow them slavishly. Instead, he regards them “the way I do table manners: The arcane rules about flatware placement are less crucial now, but they have their grounding in common sense. The first step, rules or no rules, is learning what fits you best.” Schuman’s time-tested, double-breasted wisdom:

| WOODBURY MENS SHOP

DRESS IT DOWN.

The double-breasted jacket is considered the dressiest jacket option in a gentleman’s wardrobe. The rule that a DB should always be worn buttoned, except when sitting down, adds to its (literally) buttoned-up formality. Lately I’ve seen men wearing a DB more casually; the key to doing it well is creating a visually dramatic contrast between the jacket and the rest of the look. Above, we see a double-breasted jacket with white jeans and a knit, and one worn as a suit but with a low-cut tank. Notice that these gentlemen aren’t wearing their jackets casually (the jackets are buttoned), but they’re wearing them with casual items.

WEAR IT RIGHT.

A double-breasted jacket, less contoured and even slightly boxy at the waist and with wide lapels to emphasize the shoulders, is the optimal choice for the tall, slim man. Another trick to add the illusion of width is to use the slight flare created by a double-vented jacket. The length of a tall man’s jacket should fall between the end of the thumb and the forefinger; while slightly longer than standard, this tends to de-emphasize very long legs.

AUTO

Luxe Trucks

In whatever order, these three potent pickups are bad, badder and baddest. Remember when pickup trucks were basic, no-frills, utilitarian workhorses? Well, forget it. Today’s pickups have picked up their game when it comes to luxury and looks— without conceding anything in rugged performance. Here are three of the wildest:

DODGE RAM 1500 TRX.

A peek under the hood of Dodge’s latest entry into the super pickup truck category tells the story: There’s a Jurassic Park-like graphic depicting a Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) fully consuming a raptor. The automaker makes its claim for truck supremacy thanks to the TRX’s supercharged V8 Hellcat engine, which makes 702 horsepower and a blistering 0-to-60 time of 3.7 seconds. (For comparison, that time is milliseconds off the pace of some current Ferrari models.) Like the Raptor, it’s a fully capable off-roader with 12 inches of ground clearance, underbody armoring and the ability to drive through more than 32 inches of water. The level of interior luxury matches the truck’s performance, with such amenities as a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and suede and carbon fiber accents. Top models have more options, including a digital rearview mirror, heads-up display and heated and ventilated front seats. Starting at $75,000.

FORD F-150 RAPTOR.

Ford took the truck world by storm more than a decade ago when it rolled out the F-150 Raptor. It was an off-roading giant, bigger and more powerful than any other consumer pickup in history. Now in its third generation, the new Raptor is still at the top of the class as an off-roader—and it can go toe-to-toe with some of the best cars in the luxury market. Blue suede and leather interiors with embroidered Raptor logos are available for the cabin, which is also outfitted with a large, dual-display, touch-screen infotainment system and an animated gauge cluster. Charging ports are located throughout the truck (including the spacious back seat), and overhead auxiliary switches are available for customization should owners decide to install equipment such as a winch or light bar. While the turbo-charged V6 engine with 450 horsepower is a holdover from the previous iteration, Ford is expected to release the Raptor R later this year. The top-of-the-line model will be equipped with a supercharged V8 with around 700 horsepower. Starting at $66,000.

TOYOTA TUNDRA TRD PRO.

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

As U.S. automakers lock horns with one another, the stalwart Japanese company quietly enters the off-roader pickup arena with its remodeled and revamped Tundra. Based on raw numbers, the TRD Pro can’t beat the speed and power of the TRX or the anticipated Raptor R, but it certainly gives them a run for their money. Toyota dropped the V8 engine from the previous Tundra model and outfitted the TRD Pro with a twin-turbo I-Force V6 hybrid that generates 440 horsepower. That’s plenty of muscle to tow or go off-road, but the engine gets extra points for fuel efficiency—24 miles per gallon puts it at the head of the class. Inside, the pickup boasts many of the same features found in Toyota’s iconic sedans—for example, a quiet and comfortable ride. What’s different is a massive 14-inch infotainment screen that is more intuitive than the systems found in the Camry and Corolla. The display offers a clear picture for the multiple exterior cameras. Also firsts for Toyota are the TRD Pro’s large digital gauge cluster and the uberpatriotic camouflage detailing on the seats. Starting at $51,000.

Strife-torn for years, Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean now beckons with beauty, history and tranquility. By Everett Potter

There is a magical island of untrammeled beaches and dense jungles that is awakening from years of conflict. A place of pristine white Buddhist stupas (mounds used for meditation) coexist with outlandishly decorated Hindu temples. A country where colonial plantations still produce some of the world’s finest tea, cricket matches punctuate a sleepy Sunday afternoon and leopards and elephants roam the national parks. Dubbed “India’s teardrop” because of its distinctive shape, the land resembles a freshly shed tear lying off the subcontinent’s southeastern tip. Like India, it was once a British colony—it gained independence in 1948. I’m speaking, of course, of Sri Lanka. Known until 1972 as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is an island nation of more than 20 million that is just a bit bigger than West Virginia. Exotic beauty and rich culture aside,

there is one key reason why it has been on the minds of luxury travelers lately, even before the pandemic hit: It is no longer a country at war with itself. For 26 years, Sri Lanka was essentially a no-go zone because of a civil war that finally ended in 2009. And amid that turmoil came the great tsunami of 2004, which also inflicted great damage and set the country back. Now, more than a decade after the truce, this exotic Indian Ocean nation attracts backpackers looking for the next great surf break, spiritual types in search of enlightenment and a new breed of traveler seeking freshly built luxury lodging at old tea plantations in the mountains and along the myriad white sand beaches. There’s no upside to any war, but one effect of the strife was that for 26 years, development was basically nonexistent, preserving much of the country as it was

pre-1983. Only now are resort properties being constructed. The overdevelopment afflicting some other countries in Southeast Asia is not an issue here. Instead, Sri Lanka is a time warp, a pastiche of colonial remnants and centuries-old cultures set against a vivid blue sea, lush jungle and paddy fields. I made a game of spotting old British postal boxes and clock towers around the island, details from a period PBS series that’s yet to be made. Some of the plantations still look like 19th-century stage sets, echoing a time when tea from Ceylon was a ubiquitous prize of the British colonial empire, grown by an elite group of planters who lived high up in the island’s hills. The island’s palette is one of multiple shades of green, punctuated by bursts of frangipani and bougainvillea blooming in profusion, a veritable Garden of Eden. Like all great tropical gardens, it yields edibles such as mangos, papayas and bananas. Wherever I traveled in the country, I tasted the local varieties of fruits and then fell in love with earthier Sri Lankan specialties, such as fresh crab curry and coconut sambal, best consumed with an ice-cold Royal Pilsner. But most of all, I loved the layers of history and culture that I found as I ventured around the island, discovering the people of Sri Lanka to be among the friendliest of anywhere I’ve traveled. I set my own itinerary, as you might, and it’s best done with a hired car and driver, since the roads and the driving are both highly challenging. The beaches are still quite beautiful, and not overrun as so many beaches now are in Southeast Asia. Outside of sometimes frenetic Colombo, tourism is still a new business for many islanders. But with the civil war now history, there’s a building boom on some of the better spots on the island. For now, the best of the new properties are small, luxury boutique hotels with great spas, beaches and views. That said, I started with one of the country’s venerable hotels, the Galle Face in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital. The hotel dates from 1864 and was recently upgraded. You can indulge at the resort’s six eateries or simply gaze out at the sea as I did while listening to the nightly bagpipe serenade that accompanies the lowering of the flag.

temples under canopies of banyan trees. One highlight of my trip had to be a guided tour of Yala National Park, the country’s second-largest park, where I saw small herds of elephants as well as crocodiles and leopards, the latter more profuse here than virtually anywhere else in the world. The birds were too numerous to count, but among them were great stonecurlews and black-necked storks. Yet virtually every town I visited in Sri Lanka had various species of monkeys and exotic birdlife as a backdrop. It took a local to point out that I was seeing—among other creatures—hornbills, crested serpent eagles and bee-eaters. One of my favorite stops was the city of Galle, which has a wondrous old town that reminded me a bit of Zanzibar—a maze of streets filled with tiny shops selling spices and jewelry. I also explored the Galle Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese fortification that is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site and, perhaps, the most famous site on the island.

The international crowd is here in force, as are the cafes, bars and galleries to serve them. Outside of Galle, I stayed at Tri, an eco-hideaway on the banks of Koggala Lake. Then I moved to Camp Weligama, which offers luxury accommodations on the beach. The sound of surf and my attempts at surfing kept me busy for a few days. The most remarkable thing I saw was a group of traditional stilt fishermen, balanced on stilts and casting their rods. Slow morning swims got me in the mood for yet another tranquil day in paradise. It’s clear that more hotel development is coming to Sri Lanka. A country this pristine and beautiful is simply too tempting for those in the business of tourism. So my sage advice is to go as soon as you can, to move Sri Lanka up a few notches on your bucket list, to stay in these amazing boutique properties and immerse yourself in the Indian Ocean. It’s a lush, fragrant and sensual country that gives Bali a run for its money.

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

From there, I headed south to Kalutara, a lively beach city clogged with noisy tuk-tuks (three-wheeled auto rickshaws). Near here is one of the island’s best hotels, the 152room Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, set on a coconut plantation overlooking the Indian Ocean. This is where relaxation comes in the form of Ayurvedic spa treatments, Sri Lankan cooking classes and daily beachfront yoga and meditation instruction. It’s a great base for exploring nearby beaches and tea plantations, as well as visiting Udawalawe National Park, which has the island’s greatest concentration of elephants. When it was time to head upcountry to see a bit of the interior, I went for a bit of “glamping” at the Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge, not far from Kandy. Its 18 luxury “tents” offer panoramic views of the Knuckles Mountains and neighboring tea plantations. I also visited the ancient city of Anuradhapura, filled with 2,000-year-old monasteries and

MADE-TO-MEASURE

shirt TALES

Your style. Your comfort. Your exact fit. Made-to-measure is a shirt story that always has a happy ending. Don’t get us wrong: We love off-the-rack garments, and they can create memorable looks. But face it—those shirts don’t fit like a made-to-measure shirt. Not every guy is an average Joe, so standard retail sizes and designs won’t always cut it. Because made-to-measure is based on your measurements, each shirt is guaranteed to fit perfectly. We offer made-to-measure shirts from some of the world’s finest designers in addition to the country’s top dedicated shirtmakers. Each of the renowned brands has its own distinctive style, and we know you do too. So what do you have to do to get your unique piece? That’s easy: Let us do the work. A common misconception is that made-to-measure is a complicated and costly proposition. That’s not at all true. We partner with makers to offer options at several price points, making it accessible for everyone. Here’s how it works: Our made-to-measure experts will talk to you about your personal style, fit, details and occasion. We will take you through the seemingly countless number of options to design exactly what you have in mind. Whether it’s formal, business or casual—we can do it all.

THE PROCESS

Here is where you let your creativity and attitude shine. We’ll present you with a plethora of options to customize your shirt. Think about the type of collar you prefer. For instance, the cutaway collar provides plenty of room if you wear a Windsor tie knot, or the spread collar that has a wide yet crisp look with or without a tie. You have your choice of cuffs too. A two-button barrel cuff is perfect for everyday or to wear to a more casual office. Rounded cuffs add a touch of formality to your look, or choose a sophisticated French or double cuff if you’re headed to a black-tie event or just like to wear cufflinks. Personalization doesn’t end there. Mother-of-pearl buttons? Placket or no placket? One, two or no pockets? Monogrammed or clean look? You decide.

WHAT TO EXPECT Forget about spending hours trying on clothes in a tight changing room. Once tailors have confirmed your measurements and design selections, your job is essentially done. Made-tomeasure shirts require few fittings, or in some cases none at all. (That’s more time to shop in our store for sportcoats and ties to complete the look!) It’s a modest investment of time and, if we may say so, a pretty good deal. Typically, the turnaround time for a made-to-measure shirt is three to five weeks. And you’ll pay $160 to $300 for it—about the same as a fine shirt that’s ready to wear. You can start with just one if you like, but we’re fairly sure you won’t stop there. But be warned. Once you’ve tried made-to-measure, you may find it hard to go back to off-the-rack.

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

First, our staff will take all your measurements—chest, neck, shoulders, arms, biceps (have you been working out?), waistline, the works. Next, you’ll select the material that will eventually go on your back and whether your shirt will be a single solid color or two tones, adorned with elegant stripes, boast a nice checked pattern or more. Our wide assortment of fabrics comes only from the most demanding mills in the world, and they satisfy all needs, wants and styles. Loose, athletic or slim fit? It’s all up to you.

LYFORD CAY CLUB

Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy The scene at this Sardinian club can be summed up in three superlatives: super-exclusive, super-sized and super-fast. The winds around this port make the club one of the favorite destinations of the nautical jet set. Affiliated with the Italian Sailing and Italian Powerboat Federations, the club has been organizing regattas since 1972, specializes in races for superyachts and is the scene for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Costa Smeralda was founded in 1967 by the Aga Khan and his partners to serve ultra-wealthy vacationers. It features al fresco dining, a members’ lounge and a bar as well as first-class accommodations. While the club is a gathering place for business execs and financiers, all are welcome to indulge themselves in the original Acqua di Parma Spa inside the clubhouse.

Lyford Cay, New Providence, Bahamas In a time when boldfaced names can’t escape the media glare (or Instagram), this club on the western tip of New Providence offers a refuge for the weary wealthy. In fact, landlines rule in common areas, as mobile phones are not permitted. Founded in 1966 by Canadian businessman E. P. Taylor, the club is located in one of the world’s most affluent neighborhoods. For members who have included Henry Ford II, Sean Connery and the Bacardi family, this Bahamian landmark offers much more than a place to park your yacht. For starters, there’s access to white-sand beaches, an 18-hole golf course and an impeccably decorated clubhouse, recently redesigned by Tom Scheerer. At the heart of Lyford nightlife is Little Club, one of two on-site restaurants, where members indulge in cocktails and world-class cuisine.

CAROLINA YACHT CLUB

CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF AUSTRALIA

Charleston, South Carolina, United States The Old South’s history is palpable here in Charleston’s Battery neighborhood, named for the site’s Civil War coastal artillery battery. Plantation-style architecture, such as pillars supporting shade balconies and palmetto trees swaying along the Cooper River, evokes the era when the club was incorporated in 1888. The club is a stellar venue for two things: sailing and socializing. No other yacht club in the area can rival this one’s access to the picturesque Charleston Harbor. As for the socializing, the North Property is home to the dining facilities and includes a large ballroom. In July, the club hosts the Carolina Yacht Club Invitational Regatta, which gathers 250 competitors. The race is riveting, but the real excitement is the annual Commodore’s Reception, held on Saturday night for members and sailors.

Every Boxing Day for the past 75 years, it has hosted the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, known as the Mount Everest of ocean racing. This club appeals to competitive sailors who want to drop anchor and share a yarn about the day at sea. Considered the continent’s most prestigious club, it was founded in 1944 by enthusiasts who met on a regular basis to organize short races. Today, the club maintains a connection to yacht clubs of yore. While all are invited to the casual Sydney Hobart Bar, the members-only Coasters Retreat lounge has a strict dress code and is adorned with models and sailing relics of races gone by. A handy getaway from city life, the club is located between parkland and inner harbor waters with views of Sydney’s skyline.

TECHIE

Your weather ‘UFO’

Whatever galaxy you call home, you need to know the weather. That’s where this elegant—but non-digital—combo device shines. By Nayda Rondon Years ago, people had desk barometers to check when low pressure meant an approaching storm. Now, the 2022 version of that technology has arrived. Never mind that today you can get a weather forecast in seconds on your phone—this is much cooler. Two Swiss companies—the watchmaker Maximilian Büsser & Friends (MB&F) and the storied mechanical clockmaker L’Epée 1839—have collaborated to fashion a desktop weather station. Unlike most toys today, it isn’t digital; instead, it carries complex analog gadgetry to sublime extremes. And it can warn of a storm even when the power’s out and your phone’s gone dead. It’s called The Fifth Element, and it includes a clock, a barometer, a thermometer and a hygrometer. (Element five is the hub that holds them together.) It looks like a UFO with four pods, each for one of the instruments, and it’s “piloted” by a miniature “alien.” When fully assembled, this “intergalactic horological weather station” includes more than 500 components, measures 14.8 x 8.2 inches and weighs more than 33 pounds. The main structure is

made of solid brass, and the pods can be removed from the base to stand on their own—or be reassembled in whatever configuration strikes your fancy. The core of The Fifth Element, the clock, measures 4.9 x 3.6 inches and features signature MB&F styling, especially when it comes to the typography. It’s powered by an in-house L’Epée movement with an eight-day power reserve and a vertical architecture that lets you better see key components, such as the escapement. The clock’s movement has 161 parts, and its Incabloc shock system ensures that it’ll keep on working even when you’re putting it into and taking it out of its base station. The finishing lives up to the stellar standards the world has come to expect from an MB&F watch. Similarly styled but without displaying the mechanics, the other three modules are the barometer (which shows air pressure), the thermometer (displays air temperature) and the hygrometer (shows ambient air humidity). And then there’s Ross, a brass figure who sits perched atop the base of the weather station ready to take control and blast off. L’Epée has specially engineered a clockwork mechanism that rotates him around the base of the weather station at the push of a button. The Fifth Element is available as a limited edition release: 18 units each were created in black, silver and blue (sold out). For more info, visit MB&F online.

Follow the SHEEP

But that was then. And it’s not how things work at the Sheep Ranch anymore. Nearly four years ago, the property’s longtime owners—Bandon Dunes developer Mike Keiser and business partner Phil Friedmann—decided it was time to elevate the Sheep Ranch into a full-blown, world-class course. To orchestrate the project, they hired the celebrated design team of Coore & Crenshaw. Scrapping the original makeshift layout, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw dreamed up a stunner in its place. Among the striking features of the Sheep Ranch is the way it seizes on the drama of its setting. The property includes roughly a mile of coastline, more than any of Bandon’s other courses, with nine greens located along the bluffs. Everywhere you look are ocean views, except when you turn inland. At that point what you see are artfully shaped fairways, threading their green fingers through gorse and ghostly pines. Because the Sheep Ranch occupies a windy site, its design is willfully player friendly. There are no sand bunkers—only grass bunkers—and the greens are open in front, so you can bound your approach shots low, under the breezes. The routing is intimate, with holes radiating out from clustered tee boxes and a shared green for the third and 16th holes. But the grandeur of the coastline also lends the course an impressive sense of scale. Like most anyone who visits Bandon Dunes, Keiser is often asked to name his favorite course. His answer never varies: He’s equally in love with all of them. Now, he has one more to love.

Opposite page, clockwise from top: Sheep Ranch allows golfers to play alongside one mile of pristine Pacific Coast oceanfront; when you turn your back to the ocean, you’re treated to artfully shaped fairways designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw; there are no sand traps on Sheep Ranch—however, ocean breeze and grass bunkers are hazards.

WOOD.ss22.sporting .indd 59

One of the many pleasures of a trip to Bandon Dunes, the wildly popular golf resort in southern Oregon, is to gather with your partners in the pub after your rounds and argue over which course is the best. For years, the resort had been home to four 18-hole layouts—Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald—all of which were among Golf magazine’s “Top 100 Courses” in the U.S. Ask a dozen golfers to rate the quartet, and they’re apt to give you a dozen different rankings. Everyone has an opinion, and no one is wrong. Friendly debates are just part of the fun. And they recently became even more entertaining, because a fifth course at Bandon called the Sheep Ranch opened during the pandemic and, according to Golf, it might just be the finest of them all. Never mind the name; the Sheep Ranch is not a ranch. Never has been. At one point, though, it was grazing ground for sheep. That was in the early aughts, when a rough-andtumble layout was created on the site. To say the place was bare-bones is an understatement. It had just 13 holes, with no set routing; you could play the holes in any order that you liked. There was no irrigation system, only a fire truck for watering greens. A small flock of sheep served on the maintenance staff, chomping on the layout’s unkempt fairways. It was, in short, a quirky course, with an air of mystery around it. To arrange a tee time, you called the property’s caretaker and set up a rendezvous at a dirt road, where, for a greens fee of $100, he’d unlock a gate and let you in.

GROOMING

Splitting Hairs Tonsorially uncertain? Here’s how to trim—and buzz—and brush—and tweeze to look your best. HAIRLINE

Cutting and trimming the hair on your head should be left to the experts for obvious reasons, but you can maintain a well-groomed hairline in between cuts. How? By washing your hair every two to three days rather than daily and by not weighing it down with too many products. These practices not only keep hair healthier, but also make it look thicker, thus helping to disguise receding hairlines. A bit of pomade and a comb—or your fingers—is all that’s needed to maintain your hairline on a daily basis, but you can also keep a small electric razor handy for when you need to tidy up around the edges.

EYEBROWS

The No. 1 rule for grooming your brows? Don’t overdo it. That means keeping their natural, straight shape—arched brows have a more feminine look—and only getting rid of the stragglers. To avoid the dreaded unibrow, start by placing your finger on the bridge of your nose and plucking only the hairs your finger touches. Then maintain the shape and look of the brows by trimming monthly or so; just brush hairs upward and snip only the ends (or have your barber do it for you). Tweezing carefully and sparingly with an angled tweezer is an option too, but under no circumstances should you wax those bad boys just because the lady in your life is doing it. You’ve been warned.

BEARD

Once your beard has reached the desired length, train the hairs to grow in a downward direction by brushing daily with a boar bristle brush. Then use grooming scissors or an electric razor with the guard setting of your choice once a week or so to trim and get rid of split ends and strays. Just make sure you do so with the grain to minimize bumps and irritation. Finally, keep your beard and mustache clean by rinsing with a beard wash or mild soap and water two to three times a week—and add a moisturizing beard oil when you’re feeling fancy (or itchy).

CHEST

Similar rules apply when going below the neck; always trim—do not shave, please—with the grain to reduce irritation. But how low should you go? There’s no harm in manscaping down to your belly button—“happy trail” included—but make sure the amount of hair on your torso matches with the amount on your face. You don’t want to be scruffy up top and resemble a boy bander below the neck, do you? Also, start with a higher guard setting when buzzing here. You can always go back in for another round later if it’s still too scraggly, but you can’t undo a too-short style.

In the annals of dinnertime hospitality there are many strategies for “making it look easy.” Perhaps the most ingenious and diabolical of them is having it actually be easy. That’s the skinny on this outdoor dinner, perhaps with guests still drying off from a cooling dip. Setting the scandalously simple agenda is one of the to-diefor Southern-style recipes featured in celebrity chef and lifestyle expert Alex Hitz’s tome, The Art of the Host: Recipes and Rules for Flawless Entertaining (Rizzoli New York). It’s a master class on hosting dinner parties, family brunches and holiday get-togethers with that unbeatable combination—delicious food and stunning presentation. And yes, many recipes are startlingly low-hassle. Everything served at this outdoor Los Angeles repast, for example, was prepared ahead of time and served cold—except for the chicken, which was extra tasty when warmed up slightly. Hitz’s hits include ideas as simple as adding a slice of lemon in a glass of water to adding color to your tablescape—or as clever as the blueand-white gingham that serves as design inspiration. Your guests will toast your taste—and you’ll brazenly join in.

MARC FENSTER

Although I wasn’t able to go to Italy, most of the Italian collections came to the Chicago Collective this past summer. It felt normal again to be able to shop for our spring 2022 collections in person. As always, the Italian brands did not disappoint with fashions that fit your lifestyle, lightweight silk and cashmere sweaters, sportcoats in colors and fabrics that make you feel alive again and the luxury overshirt that serves as the ultimate layering piece.

It’s a new season and with it arrives new colors. Pastels such as lavender, ice blue, yellow and lime green are currently filling our shelves. As in the past, we’re showing linens and lightweight casual denims. I’m still wearing unconstructed sportcoats with sherbet-colored Italian T-shirts combined with our S.M.N narrow-fitting jeans. Don’t overdress for spring!

AMIR MORADI

RICH O’BOYLE

Stenströms has done it again this season by taking their contemporary design to new heights of sophistication. From the finest fabrics to the most gorgeous details, Stenströms gives you the flexibility to dress up your shirt with a necktie and Italian suit, or dress it down with an opened collar and unconstructed jacket. There’s a reason they remain our leading shirt designer season after season.

My latest obsession is colored jeans from S.M.N. I love the dusty shades of slate and umber. Don’t get me wrong: I still love my classic denim jeans. But these colors give me the flexibility to cross over from casual Magnanni sneakers to my polished Gallo di Bianco double monk-strap shoes.

Now that we’re able to gather to celebrate again, it’s time to get dressed for black-tie weddings and events. Even when dressing formal, you can still have fun for spring. Whether you wear a dark navy blue tuxedo to be fashionforward or just add a colorful silk vest and bow tie to a classic black ensemble, spring is the time of year to brighten things up!
