OUTERWEAR DEDICATED
TO MAN
When you decide to purchase Manto outerwear, you’re buying more than just a label: You’re interested in the value of the Italian brand’s coats and jackets.
Founded in and named after Mantua, a town in northern Italy and UNESCO
World Heritage Site, this 6-year-old small business is already making a big impact in menswear thanks to its pledge to uphold Italian traditions of design and workmanship. This includes sourcing the best raw materials, employing the finest tailors to sew each jacket and researching innovative styles and fabrics. That dedication is a guarantee that Manto garments are made for those who care for quality as much as aesthetics. Men who wear Manto belong to an exclusive club, as the coats and jackets are only available at the world’s best specialty stores, including Woodbury Mens Shop. Stop by the store today and let us introduce you to Manto, so you can join the club.
GIVING KIDS A PLACE TO CALL HOME
The COVID pandemic has been hard on all of us in different ways. Last year when school closed, it was particularly taxing on kids who didn’t have a safe or caring place to study. Since 2019, the number of foster beds has decreased by 10 percent and the number of children entering foster care has increased 30 percent. Hope For Youth, a Long Islandbased foster care agency, has been working overtime to increase the number of homes and families accepting foster children. “Project 21” is designed to ensure that every youth in care has a home to come back to after a long day. Hope For Youth offers digital orientations for those interested in becoming foster parents. For more information, contact Tina Basile, Project 21 coordinator, at 631.813.9572.
BE EFFORTLESSLY
ITALIAN
Your closet’s filled with Trussini and Taccaliti—there may even be a Ferrari parked in your garage. But if you really want to live like an Italian gentleman, dip into Maria Pasquale’s new book, How to Be Italian: Eat, Drink, Dress, Travel and Love La Dolce Vita (Rizzoli). In it the award-winning journalist touches on everything Italians enjoy, showing us how to savor every moment while indulging in things that simply make us happy: fashion, travel, food and even doing nothing. All of that has been a part of the country’s culture for generations; no wonder some of the greatest artists, designers, thinkers and gourmands have thrived in the boot-shaped land.
WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS
Forget spring cleaning because ’tis the season to get your outfits in order, and Woodbury Mens Shop can drop in and offer a complimentary closet consultation. Your favorite associate will come to your home to evaluate what is still in style and what needs to go. We’ll coordinate your existing wardrobe so you know which styles to mix and match, and you’ll learn what pieces are missing and/or need updating for the season. It’s always a good feeling to get rid of dated clothes that are taking up valuable closet space. Please call us at your convenience to set up an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you.

FOR THE CHECKMATES

Every sport relies on star power—LeBron James and Tom Brady are always must-see TV. But today a quieter game is creating stars of its own: chess. Long considered a pursuit for child prodigies and men’s clubs, chess is garnering a new following. Tournament-tested and world-ranked players are taking their games to social media and live-streaming sites, calling “checkmate” while showing off their chess skills and personalities. They also take on ordinary folks on sites like chess.com. You may not buy jerseys as you do for your favorite athletes—instead, you’ll hit the “follow” or “subscribe” button to show support for the top chess players. If you’re wondering whom to follow, here are four top players: Magnus Carlsen (pictured). It’s easy to mistake this 30-yearold Norwegian for an actor, but he’s all business—sometimes ruthlessly so—on the chessboard when the sportcoat comes off. He’s the world’s top-ranked chess player, a grandmaster (GM) and a pretty good competitor in other games as well: Check out some of his sporty shots on Instagram (@magnus_carlsen). Hikaru Nakamura. Born in Japan but raised in the U.S., Nakamura is a top-20-in-the-world player and one of Carlsen’s biggest rivals. He earned the GM title at 15, becoming the youngest American at the time to achieve that feat. Now 33, he competes in international competitions and matches on chess. com and has fans worldwide thanks to his popular Twitch stream and YouTube channel (GMHikaru on both services). Alexandra Botez. This 25-year-old woman FIDE master is a social media celeb thanks to her prowess on the black-and-white squares. (The initials FIDE stand for the International Chess Federation’s name in French.) Dallas-born, Vancouver-raised Botez competes in global tourneys and against opponents on chess.com, and she’s built a massive fan base thanks to her Twitch and YouTube accounts. The channels (BotezLive on both services) follow her and her chess-playing little sister, Andrea, in their daily activities, such as challenging chess hustlers in New York’s Washington Square and Union Square parks. Keti Tsatsalashvili. A grandmaster since 2010, this 29-yearold Tbilisi, Georgia, native conquered the chess world early, capturing plenty of international titles before she turned 18. Since then she’s added chess commentator to her arsenal of roles, hosting championships and titled tournaments across the globe. Like Botez, she runs an active YouTube channel and Twitch account (LetsChessLive), where she streams her online matches from chess.com.

ASK MR. ETIQUETTE
Jim Foley explains how to sail through life without giving offense. After wearing sweat pants and hoodies for the past year, I’m heading back to the office. What should I wear?
—Worried in Woodbury
Remember “business casual?” Well, that’s the code word for the new back-to-work fashion. Instead of khakis and polo shirts, try a well-fitted sportcoat (especially if you meet with clients), an open collar sport shirt and the right tailored trousers. Skip the running shoes and wear a fashion sneaker, loafer or polished shoe with a matching belt. We’re slowly returning to some after-work socializing, so on Fridays, swap the trousers for a hip pair of jeans and you’ll be ready to hit your favorite happy hour spot after work.
