EDUCATION FOCUS

INSIDE

Local information for all age groups and education needs; from families with young pre-schoolers through to school leavers or those already in the work force wanting to further their careers or expand their horizons through education.

Education. We all need it.

The Oxford dictionary terms it “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.”

That’s the formal deÿ nition but it goes way back to our early beginnings to recognising sounds, words, reading, writing, learning how to drive a car, to focusing on those school exams, choosing a career path, and realising what potential study we may need to do when leaving school to achieve personal goals.

There is nothing more meaningful than getting up each morning, heading to a job which we feel positive about and with great workmates who augment your day with comradeship, fun and laughter. This doesn’t happen by accident. Education is the key. All jobs make a di° erence in some way to the community we live in, and if you feel you are doing your bit – then your education is doing its job.

This magazine aims to highlight the vast range of education services available in Wairarapa. The region prides itself in its education diversity spanning decades. There are 10 colleges o° ering secondary education and 24 primary schools. REAP o° ers a spectrum of extra mural classes and there’s UCOL. Early childhood outlets include privately owned ones, parent run Playcentres and state funded kindergartens. There are Montessori schools and Kohanga reo and emerging innovative ones such as Wairarapa Forest School and the Te Kura O Papat˛˝nuku Wairarapa Earth School focusing on sustainability. Read on ... learn what is on o° er for you.

REAP WAIRARAPA

Wairarapa rangatahi have so much to o˜ er the world and REAP Wairarapa believes that by supporting them and removing potential barriers, we can help those rangatahi develop the skills to succeed. REAP facilitates 2 youth-focused programmes to do that - Ng° P˛manawa T˛puna and Youth2Work Wairarapa. Success is individual and our programmes work because we start where the individual is at.

Ng° P˛manawa T˛puna draws on aspects of tikanga M°ori, which assists rangatahi to connect to their whenua, whakapapa and wh°nau. This helps them strengthen their cultural identity and self-worth. This programme has successfully helped over 110 rangatahi over 2 years and is now running for another 3 years, working with 16 to 24 year olds who are not in Education, Employment or Training.

Whereas, Youth2Work Wairarapa focuses on sustainable long-term, full-time

employment for youth, with pathways for growth within a role. The team has placed almost 100 rangatahi or COVID displaced adults into employment across Carterton and Masterton in the past year and thanks to Mayors Taskforce for Jobs and Carterton District Council is also continuing. Both programmes help connect young people to their community and progress personal growth and development, with a focus on re-engaging with education, training or employment. The di˜ erence is that some will beneÿ t from a tikanga approach and some want support to get work-ready.

If you have rangatahi you feel may beneÿ t from support please contact us on 0800 968 842 for a conÿ dential conversation and we can talk with you about both programmes. REAP Wairarapa is very proud of the work we do to support Wairarapa rangatahi and their wh°nau. Check us out on facebook.com/youth2workwai.nz and www.youth2work.nz for more information.

ST MATTHEW’S COLLEGIATE

St Matthew’s Collegiate –learning for life

Our focus for the ÿ rst half of 2022 has been on steadying our ship as we returned to a full school life on campus. We will chart a steady course through the second half of the year as we navigate our junior production, many sports, social and academic events, ÿ eld trips and, of course, curriculum learning. The term ahead will see our senior choir, Viva Camerata, at the national Big Sing Finale and the extravaganza that is the eagerly anticipated St Matthew’s House Music event.

The mid-point of the school year is a busy place to be, poised between building on current learning, still ÿ lling the kete with knowledge, but with an eye on the important end-of-year exams for our senior students. By weaving many learning strands together, we will continue to support St Matthew’s Collegiate students to become successful, future-focussed, young women.

St Matthew’s celebrates diversity and inclusiveness – we know that success for each student looks di° erent. Each learner has a di° erent starting point, talents and challenges. Small class sizes, integrated support systems and the advantage that boarding

o° ers, make for excellent learning outcomes at St Matthew’s.

During the recent pandemic challenges, bonds between home and school have become stronger, our systems have been tested and found to be e° ective, and our girls have shown courage, compassion and resilience. Through the disruption of 2021 we delivered 100% pass rate at NCEA levels 1 and 2, and 99% at level 3. ‘Teamwork’ certainly made our ‘dream work’ in challenging times.

We remain proud of our long tradition of academic excellence, achievements across sporting codes and cultural disciplines. Keen

to be involved in sustainability projects, the school has partnered with the Ruamahanga Restoration Trust and students have planted a new section of native bush along our streamline, built traps with Masterton Menz shed and initiated a student-led food waste venture. Our girls never cease to amaze us with their commitment, integrity and passion for life and have organised and participated in community service projects, raising money and awareness for charities such as Wairarapa Cancer Society, Food Bank and Save the Children. They have once again made beautiful clothing for the ‘Dress a Girl around the World’ campaign

and have produced artwork for the indoor arena at Masterton’s Riding for the Disabled centre.

Amongst many sporting and cultural achievements this year our Equestrian team continues to excel, winning the 2022 Nga Tawa Equestrian Interschool Show Jumping Competition and Pony Grand Prix Series and we are proud of our students who competed and placed in the Ng˛ Manu K˝rero competition and the Wairarapa Schools Speech Finals

Stay well and safe through the remainder of 2022.

WAINUIORU SCHOOL

“Excellence and Pride in our learning, our school and ourselves.” As a true hub of the Wainuioru Community, our sta° , students and board really do take pride in all we do. We’re a small school with a big heart.

Located only a short drive from Masterton, our students enjoy the best of learning in a rural environment. Our Waikids values ensure they work towards becoming well rounded citizens and our curriculum allows us to incorporate the best of all worlds. Throughout their time at Wainuioru, students are

involved in a range of activities focused on developing them as individuals who make a di° erence in our community. From our Eco Warriors group, our Forest School programme, through to our Year 8 enhancement programme, students are given opportunities to learn about themselves, their environment, and their community.

Coming to school each day and leading student learning is a privilege for us all.

Earlier this year it was awarded the national title of ‘New Zealand’s Most Sustainable School’, due to its innovative solar network partnership, extension to its native bush area, and culturally responsive place based learning curriculum. Year 12 Solway College student Sheryl Chand was the co-winner of the prestigious New Zealand race unity awards speech competition, and Year 9 Ava Wilson has achieved four New Zealand titles so far this year, across both open water swimming, and national swimming championships.

Academic results were once again exceptionally high with the NCEA results for all students completing the 2021 academic year reaching a 100% attainment rate across all three levels of NCEA.

Along with national titles Solway College students also excelled and achieved great things at a regional level. At the 2022 Wairarapa Intercollegiate Shakespeare

KURANUI COLLEGE

Kuranui’s Ignite Curriculum leads to amazing NCEA results

Kuranui College has reported a high level of achievement at all three NCEA levels for 2021, despite the disruption caused by COVID-19 and national lockdowns. Principal Simon Fuller believes the strong results stem from a combination of factors, but he acknowledged that it’s the dedication and commitment of the sta˜ that makes all the di˜ erence. “One of the things I value most about the sta˜ at Kuranui is their unwavering optimism, positivity, and genuine care for each and every young person,” explained Fuller. “Our sta˜ demonstrate an incredible mix of determination, passion, professionalism, patience and persistence.”

The results compared very favourably with schools across the country and Wairarapa. The student achievement rate at Level 1 was at 89%, up from 80% on the previous year, while at Level 2 the achievement rate was 94%, again higher than in 2020. However, Fuller is particularly pleased with the college’s achievement rate at Level 3, with 81% of students gaining the level.

“The success of our innovative Ignite Curriculum and Inspire Time programme has helped to improve engagement and therefore achievement in all areas of the school,” said Fuller.

The Inspire programme is now in its third year. With a diverse range of options in the school timetable, the programme aims to give students an opportunity to have a go at something that they may never have thought of before, this includes activities such as CrossFit, Aviation Studies, Latin, Spanish, Minecraft, and elite sports training. Students are actively encouraged to learn new skills away from the classroom curriculum during two dedicated weekly sessions called ‘Inspire Time’, providing them with the chance to have fun, connect with people and learn new skills.

Implemented in 2018 as a curriculum for junior students, Kuranui’s Ignite

Curriculum is now delivered across all year groups. “It focuses on allowing students to follow their passions and accelerate their learning, while preparing them for the modern world.

“Organised in two semesters, senior students can choose up to 10 courses over a year, which provides for a more adaptable approach, giving students the opportunity to choose internal and external components with more ° exibility.”

Each course is centred around contextual learning with courses such ‘Sci-Fi’ which looks at Star Wars to Star Trek, Avatar to Aliens, allowing students to explore the galaxy and gain University Entrance Literacy at the same time.

There is ‘Agriculture Maths’ for those students interested in farming and horticulture, where they discover the advantage of using number, measurement and statistics in a range of agriculture-related concepts.

‘Out and About’ links responsible behaviours and risk management in the outdoors, as well as helping students to develop self-management strategies during outdoor activities. Students have the opportunity to participate in rock-climbing, abseiling, orienteering, caving and mountain-biking, as well as adventure-based learning to develop their interpersonal skills.

Science techniques are brought to life in courses such as ‘Forensic Science’ where the content covers DNA analysis, the physics behind evidence gathering, as well as identifying types of chemical reactions.

For the ÿ rst time, Kuranui is also o˜ ering contextual courses in Commerce and Economics.

“The success of our curriculum has made other schools sit up and take a look and as a result we have now contributed to helping other schools implement their own curricula based on Ignite,” Fuller added.

Learning to live sustainably

Sustainability is a critical issue for New Zealand – environmentally, economically, culturally, politically, and socially.

We need to learn how to live smarter to reduce our impact on the environment for future generations. The future-focus theme of sustainability is important to create all-rounded learning.

Early learning to fi t your needs

Early learning helps children to be conÿ dent and curious about the world.

It also helps them do better when they go to school or kura. A child learns through everything they do, see, feel, smell, taste and hear. That’s why the rolemodelling of a parent or carer is so vital.

Children are like miniature sponges, taking in everything they see.

In New Zealand we are so lucky with the

range of early childhood services we have at hand.

These include Kindergartens (teacherled), Playcentres (parent-led), homebased programmes (privately run), Te Kohanga Reo (M˜ori immersion), Playgroups (parent or organisation led), Te Kura (correspondence School) and cultural-based groups such as Paciÿ c Island groups.

Children are allowed to work at their own pace using unique materials. These encourage selfconÿ dence, independence, selfdiscipline and concentration.

The Montessori classroom is a thriving community of learners where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. Small groups and a rich Montessori programme foster love of learning, independence and creativity.

For 115 years Montessori methods have transformed education in nearly every country of the world. Wairarapa Montessori began 26 years ago. With exceptional support from parents there are now four Montessori primary classes in Carterton. This is what parents say about Wairarapa Montessori:

“We knew from our ÿ rst visit that our daughter would love her time here and would learn a great deal. Everything has exceeded our expectations. The teachers

have fantastic parent-teacher relationships and do an amazing job caring for and teaching to every child’s individual needs. We recommend this centre to anyone!”

“We highly value Montessori as the focus is on our children becoming conÿ dent, engaged, independent learners. Excellent learning materials, working at their own pace using their interests as motivation in close collaboration with their caring interested teachers in a supportive learning environment, is the key. Consequently our children are thriving, becoming more conÿ dent in their own abilities and most importantly, are happy.”

The curriculum features ÿ ve key areas:

• MATHEMATICS - GEOMETRY: Learning subtle gradations in size, length and weight, exploring solid and plane geometry shapes. Vocabulary expands as children revel in wonderful sounding names such as ovoid, ellipse, sphere and parallelogram.

• SENSORIAL - ART: Working with size, colour, sound, weight, textures & shapes.

• SCIENCE - GEOGRAPHY: Puzzle maps, globes, pictures and classiÿ cation games teach

the child about the world, our place in it and respect for other cultures.

• PRACTICAL LIFE: Real-life activities such as scrubbing, polishing, washing, cooking, sewing and food preparation, giving children skills to care for themselves and developing concentration and coordination.

• READING & LANGUAGE: Building vocabulary and developing handwriting skills.

Your visit is welcome: Experience ÿ rst-hand what makes the Montessori approach unique. To accommodate working parents, the centre is open throughout the year, only closing for the Christmas – New Year holidays.
