Welcome to the 2021 baby book

Welcome to our baby book for 2021 and congratulations to the proud mums and dads who have taken the time to submit photos of their babies.

Gosh, aren’t they adorable! No two babies are ever the same and while some may share family resemblances or even look similar to other babies born outside of whānau, each is completely unique.

When you hold a baby in your arms remember it is entirely one-of-a-kind. Treasure that baby - it does not exist anywhere else on the entire planet!

Amazingly, it shares DNA that is 99.9% similar with every other human, and yet no two of us are alike. The same is true of fingerprints.

Did you know at 23 weeks into a pregnancy, ridges form on the palms of hands and on the soles of the feet? These are the foundations for what will later become a baby’s fingerprints and

footprints. The probability that two people will share the same fingerprints is 1 in 64 billion.

To date, no two identical fingerprints have ever been found. Even the fingerprints on each of a baby’s fingers are completely distinct from one another.

Dr Akash Kota, the family dentist from Masterton Dental says parents should start brushing their baby’s teeth once they appear. Brush gently, morning and evening with a soft bristled toothbrush.

Need Afterhours Care?

Masterton Medical has launched a new service o ering virtual after hours appointments on the same day. It’s called Practice Plus and o ers consults using video calling over a digital device like a smartphone, tablet or computer. The service is available on weekdays from 5pm -10pm, and weekends and public holidays from 8am – 8pm. Practice Plus can be used for baby or medical advice, visual inspections, repeat prescriptions, and ordering follow-up tests. Appointments cost $65 for those aged 14 years or over, $55 for ages 13 years or under or $19.50 for those with a community services card. For more information visit: www.practiceplus.nz

Sleep time…

Bubs having trouble settling? Try introducing some soft lullabies, soothing classical music, or ‘spa music’.

Five top lullabies to try are 1. Twinkle, twinkle, little star 2. Away in a manger 3. Somewhere over the rainbow 4. You are my sunshine 5. Rockabye baby. Sing a lullaby to your baby yourself rather than play it on a device.

Studies show parents’ voices (especially mothers’ voices) engage babies’ brains more than any other sounds. Your infant will bene t no matter how bad you think you sound. Their hearing is very sensitive so never use headphones on an infant and always keep any stereo volume very low.

Babies pick up sounds in the womb so you can sing or hum to an unborn baby to help establish the connection.

It takes a team of people to deliver the

customer experience and ensure the shelves are stocked. Staff are integral to the opera�on and Masterton PAK’nSAVE looks to employ those who are hardworking, passionate about their work, and love giving great customer service.

The team are a family and many of the staff understand what it’s like for families to shop there because they are customers of the store themselves. Like their customers, they too have families and have been through the experience of having newborns and what it’s like to be expec�ng.

Becca Kenny is the store’s Butchery 2IC and is expec�ng her first child in April. She’s been with the store for four years, working her way from meat packing to now running the butchery alongside her manager, Richard Anderson. “He’s really helped

me throughout my �me here”, she acknowledges. “In fact, all the staff here have been incredibly suppor�ve to me, both with my pregnancy and in developing my career”. Having completed her three-year butcher appren�ceship with PAK’nSAVE in November she’s looking forward to being a mum. “I know I’m well supported at work and I know we have a huge range of products here that will support me as I become a mother too,” she says.

Kylie Burrell is the Produce Manager and has been working across PAK’nSAVE for 14 years. She’s recently moved down from Whanganui, a�racted by the ethos of the Masterton store and having impressed the owners when she worked with them previously at New World. A go-ge�er, her hard working a�tude is summed up by her mantra “If you want it, just

get it done!” She knows a thing or two about raising children. She has five ranging in ages from 2-14 years. Her biggest advice for new mumsto-be? “As a mum, everyone has different opinions so do what feels natural and right for you. Don’t beat yourself up through paren�ng. Embrace it and learn as you go.” She loves the hard work ethic that the store owners bring. “They’re on the shop floor a lot working alongside staff and customers. That tells you how much we both mean to them. That sense of family flows into our service and product offerings and I know that families and new mums-to-be will be well cared for here and impressed by our range of baby products. Plus great fruit and vegetable produce too!” she chuckles.
