WELCOME

Mayor’s message I am once again privileged to welcome competitors and visitors to another exciting Golden Shears international event. I have no doubt that this year’s competition will again be a fantastic celebration of skill and endurance by shearers and wool handlers. There is no denying that farming is a big part of our community, and district, and the Golden Shears brings a welcome taste of farming to town. The introduction of live streaming across the globe has increased interest in the event as well, lifting Masterton’s profile and showcasing our association with shearing, resulting in a considerable boost to our economy. hard work over the 60 years.

On behalf of the Golden Shears committee it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 61st Golden Shears.

A big thank you to Mayor Lyn Patterson and the District Council for their ongoing support and their part in the 61 years of our event.

After a very trying year with Covid-19 in New Zealand and around the world we are extremely lucky to be holding our event when so many other shows have been restricted or cancelled worldwide and this coming year is looking to be unsettled as well. On the brighter side, this last year we entered the Wellington Gold Awards and won the events category, Vibrant Gold, which was extremely rewarding and an acknowledgement to our past and present committee members for their

Sadly, we have no tests with Australia this year but have filled the gaps with other events. The Golden Shears couldn’t happen without the support of our sponsors, big & small. Our main sponsors being Bayleys, Trust House, Lister & Shear Expertise. Once again, we hope you all enjoy your stay in Masterton. Sam Saunders, President

scenes, an outstanding team of people – organisers, judges, referees, stewards, commentators, timekeepers, volunteers, and others - work tirelessly to make the event an exciting experience for everyone. We all benefit from their commitment and hard work to ensuring everything runs smoothly - a huge thank you must go to them. Masterton District Council’s vision is to provide the best of rural provincial living and the Golden Shears truly symbolises the mix we are so proud of. A special welcome to you all. Enjoy your week and please take advantage of the great hospitality I am sure you will be offered during your stay. Lyn Patterson, Masterton Mayor

GOLDEN SHEARS 2021

GOLD AWARDS Vibrant Golden Shears wins gold award The Golden Shears earned another accolade when it won the Vibrant Gold Award at the 2020 Wellington Gold Awards. Founded in 1999, the Wellington Gold Awards in association with The Dominion Post celebrates the excellence and enterprise of businesses in the Wellington region. There are eight industry categories with the Vibrant Gold Award focusing on events, hospitality and tourism facilities. The Gold Awards are held annually in TSB Arena, and are attended by 900

or so guests, including Members of Parliament, the region’s mayors and many business leaders. On the Gold Awards website Golden Shears President Sam Saunders is quoted as saying “Over 450 people competed in 2020 over three and a half days in shearing, wool handling and pressing. The 2020 livestream reached a record 129,000 viewers.” “Masterton War Memorial Stadium, the venue, holds approximately 1200 spectators and was near capacity for both finals nights. This event brings in a large number of visitors each year to Masterton which is very advantageous for our local economy.” Looking back today, Sam says the Golden Shears had considered entering the Awards in the past “but it always came at a time when the Golden Shears was on and we were

pretty busy with other things. Last year the entry deadline was left open a bit longer because of Covid, so we had more time to put in an entry.” The timing of the award is fitting, says Sam, as 2020 saw the Golden Shears celebrate its 60th anniversary. “Receiving the Award is recognition of what our committee has done over the past 60 years in entertainment and industry.” Finance Minister Grant Roberston presented the Award, which saw eight Golden Shears committee members and their partners at the event. Sam says he knew the Golden Shears was in with a chance of winning, “but I never count my chickens before they hatch.” He says the success of the event comes down to the passion of its volunteers,

and the prestige of the event, which has been maintained for more than half a century. “We are the top competition of shearing in the world, even by competitor numbers. So we run what looks like a professional show, run by amateurs – we just like to be very thorough in what we do and provide a real spectacle, especially when the events get a bit faster and a bit tougher. “We’re lucky that the older people that have been running the event in the past are all still around. They’re always there to provide backup and support, which is really good to have.”

GOLDEN SHEARS 2021

JOEL HENARE If one were to do a bit of conjecturing, Joel Henare might be looking towards a goal which could disappear at any time – to be the greatest Golden Shears champion of all time. Well, almost, for if it’s defined by the most Golden Shears wins in a row he is, as winner of the Open wool handling title in all eight years since 2013, in sight of the record of 12 by David Fagan in the Open shearing championship from 1990 to 2001 – even if it does get harder every year. He’s been in the Golden Shears Open final in all 14 years he’s been in the top grade. Third as a 14-year-old in 2007, 4th in 2008, and runner-up in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, before embarking on his sequence of wins. In 14 seasons in the Open grade, he’s not once failed to qualify for the Golden Shears Open final.

person acclaimed by Shearing Sports New Zealand as either a Master Shearer or Master Wool handler, is remarkable in the annals of New Zealand Sport. In short it makes him the Jonah Lomu or Kane Williamson of shearing sports, the difference being it didn’t include having to stay at school to prepare him for the real world on the outside.

He’s won four World titles – only late idol Joanne Kumeroa won more – and his 14 Trans Tasman tests is a record in wool handling internationals. The fact is that at the age of 27 he’s achieved just about everything there is to achieve including retiring, which he more or less did two years ago, as short-lived as it was. The “retirement” came at the time of his 2019 Golden Shears win, the 100th Open of his career, which from winning the New Zealand Wool Handler of the Year in Balclutha at the age of 15, and becoming in 2014 easily the youngest

While Gisborne is home, school, in the sheep-chasing nature of the shearing industry, was the woolsheds of Central Otago, between what time was required in the classroom, mainly in Cromwell. By the time he had his first win in competition, aged 12, at Lumsden in January 2005, he was in tagging along with mum Greta already well-known in the industry and the

sport, with more aunties than he cared to count. His mum and the aunties have been the mentors, for sure, but the Golden Shears heritage goes right back to the start in 1961. His dad was a shearer, whose father’s brother, Mac Potae, was 4th in the first Golden Shears Open shearing final. Another brother, George Potae, won the big title in 1968. Joel’s grandmother, Vicky Maitland, won the Otago championships’ first New Zealand Wool Handler of the Year final. His first Golden Shears was an experience in itself, a 13-year-old piling into contractor Peter Lyon’s van for a venture of uncharted waters, a roadtrip north from Alexandra not knowing quite what to expect.

One of the party, Gina Nathan, won the Open wool handling final, as was the case also in 2006. Joel missed the Junior final by just one place, being beaten into the top four, he notes, by Elaine Robin, also from Gisborne and who died in a crash a few weeks later.

and their mum, Erica, a former lower grades wool handling champion, who now lives in Nelson.

Career Highlights FIRST WIN: Lumsden Lamb Shear 2005 FIRST OPEN WIN: Central Hawkes Bay 2006 TOTAL WINS: (to 8 February 2021) 118 Awarded Master Wool Handler by SSNZ 2014 REPRESENTATION: World Championships 2; Trans Tasman Tests 14 MAJOR SUCCESSES: World Champion Individual and Teams 2012, 2017 Golden Shears Champion 2013-2020 NZ Shearing Championships 2010, 2015-2017 NZ Wool Handler of the Year, Balclutha 2008-2012, 2015-2020 NZ Merino Championships, Alexandra 2012, 2014, 2018 NZ Spring Shears, Waimate 2014, 2016-2018 NZ Corriedale Championships, Christchurch 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018

He stayed with friends he’d met in Alexandra, and it set the routine as he stayed most years with Nicole and Sparrow, on reflection a significant factor as he prepared for the toughest three days of the year, sometimes fighting for the Golden Shears Open title with people he worked with for the other 52 weeks.

“It’s just keeping on track,” he says, revealing it was his mum who kept pulling him up, even when he went through a phase hating competitions. When it comes to winning the Golden

Shears Open, “you’ve got to be on the right frequency,” he says. Only once, he says, has he come off the board at the end of the final confident he’d won – in 2019, when he was retiring. In the last “couple” of wins, he’s had other things on his mind, like children – Keanu, 7, Hikurangi, 6, and Lee, 5,

If he missed a few days at school back in the day, it doesn’t show, his knowledge of the industry clear as he steps into the role of arena commentator at shows around the country. But really, it’s all about the big event in Masterton.

In 2017 it got him onto the cover of shearing’s Rolling Stone – Shearing Magazine. In 2021 it gets him onto the cover of the programme at the Golden Shears, and still he says: The Golden Shears is everything. It’s like going to the Grammies. It still takes my breath away, every time I walk into that hall.”

PADDY MASON Food parcels replace shearing during Covid lockdown Paddy Mason is well-known for his contribution to the Golden Shears, supplying the team of shearers who shear the sheep for the wool handling competitions. But last year his volunteer work took a different turn when Paddy, wife Charmaine and children Matene, Emma, Tama and Ana started putting together food parcels and delivering them to kaumatua during the Covid lockdown. The initiative rapidly grew with Paddy getting donations from different sources and increasing the range of beneficiaries to include needy families. Once the lockdown went up to level 3, the extended Mason family joined in, and by the end of the lockdown, the family had delivered around 15,000 food parcels. With the lockdown now in the past, Paddy is back at the Golden Shears supplying the shearers to shear around 700 sheep for the wool handling events. Not only is skill required to shear the full wool (once a year) sheep in order that the wool handlers have a complete fleece for maximum visual effect, but

the shearers have to pace themselves as a team for the level of skill of each wool handling event. The Mason family has been volunteering at the Golden Shears since its inception. Paddy’s grandmother Hinerau Mason was a resident wool handler at the Golden Shears from when it started in 1961, and always encouraged the younger members of her extended family to take part. Paddy originally sheared for Hinerau who ran her own shearing team. He established Shear Expertise with business partner Colin Brown in 2006 and became the sole owner in 2016. Since 2019 Shear Expertise has sponsored the Open Wool Handling

championship, the winner of which wins the Hinerau Mason Memorial Trophy. Paddy and Charmaine’s children are part of the business with Matene Mason winning the Golden Shears Senior Shearing title in 2011. Paddy’s wife Charmaine and daughter Emma do administration for Shear Expertise, while younger son Tama and younger daughter Ana work for the team during the school holidays. Most of Shear Expertise’s shearing is done in the Wairarapa, although they also shear on the Mercury Islands off the Coromandel Peninsula, Mahia Peninsula in Hawke’s Bay, and a few other locations outside the region.

JUDGING In a nutshell In all disciplines, a penalty system for points is used; the lower the total the better.

WOOL PRESSING Competitors are judged on workmanship, safety and technique. Loading the press, tramping, pressing the bale, capping and completion of bale are the most important judging criteria. Bale target weights are set with penalties for being over or under weight. Time points are deducted at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof.

2020 WOOL HANDLING JUDGES FROM LEFT: Mori Gibbs, Myles Oldershaw, Gail Haitana, Dawn Ratana, Hine Thompson, Jo Hopkirk, Bo Paku-Clark, Gail Holmes, Roxanne Roxburgh, Pauline Smith (AUS), Linda Tarrant, Peter Lange. Absent: Ian Hopkirk.

WOOL HANDLING Judging is divided into two sections; Board (what the audience sees) and Wool Assessment. Board Judging Takes into account the tidiness and efficiency of the competitor, the throw and skirting of the fleece, plus the roll and placement into a fadge. Fleeces are ‘skirted’ for finer neck wool, stained side wool, short wool and for other faults as necessary. Skirtings are separated and placed in baskets. Wool Assessment Fleeces and oddments are removed from the board for assessment. Fleeces should be free of skirtings and each basket should have a different type of wool.

FROM LEFT BACK ROW: Richard Waddell, Neil Fagan, Max Flood (AUS), Willie Buick, Matt Johnson, Kevin Boyd, Robert McLaren, Allan Patterson, Allan Grant, Philip Morrison, Dave Brooker, Richard France, Mark Barrowcliffe, Joanne Mead.

Whole points are accumulated from the board and assessment judging.

FRONT ROW: Allan Pretious, Russell Knight, Ken Macpherson, Graham McNae, Ronald King. Absent: Donald Macrae.

Sealed times are set for each grade, from the shearer finishing to when the competitor should finish. Time points accumulate for the sealed time but increase five-fold past that time. Board, assessment and time penalties are added for the total points.

SHEARING Competitors are judged while shearing and in the outside pens for overall quality. Shearing the sheep, a second cut or double cut of wool staple is penalised. A second cut of 11mm x 10mm x 85mm long (or the accumulation of smaller second cuts) accrues a 1 stroke penalty. The shorn sheep is judged for wool left on at the same penalty value as above. Skin cuts are also penalised. Penalty strokes on the board and from the pen judging are divided by the number of sheep shorn to give a quality points total. Time points are calculated at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof. Quality points and time points are added together for the competitor’s total score.

Shearers know their sheep “Be it the weight, the bone, the type of sheep or sometimes their attitude, shearers know good sheep when they work with them. Many new clients have come to Wairere as a result of recommendations from those that work with or have shorn, Wairere bred sheep. Wairere has sold many rams to Golden Shears winners and shearing sports competitors from all categories, who have become farmers themselves. From one end of New Zealand to the other, and around the world, Waireres have a reputation for being the type of sheep that shearers recommend and farmers want to farm. “I first shore at Wairere in 1991 and since then have shorn Wairere bred sheep in every corner of New Zealand. They are consistently good sheep, wherever I have found them”. Lawrence Aspinall. (Pahiatua)

DONALD AND LINDA MCCRAE Full wool sheep add spectacle to wool handling Most sheep in New Zealand are normally shorn twice a year, in autumn and spring. But that wasn’t always the case. Up until around 30 to 40 years ago, they used to be shorn annually, just the once, around November/December This produced thick, full wool fleeces of the type that make a spectacle of the wool handling events at the Golden Shears, that tests the wool handlers abilities. So every year, the Golden Shears requires around 600 sheep for its wool handling competition to be full wool. For the past three years this responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Donald and Linda Macrae who run a 2100 acre sheep & beef farm in rolling hill country at Gladstone.

“I was also worried that the full wool sheep would lose condition at a critical time just before they were put out to ram. But the sheep came through well the first year, so I have been happy to carry on.”

As well as supplying full wool romneys, the couple. who are assisted on the farm by their son Mat, also provide around the same number of two tooths for the shearing events. The initial 350 acre farm was established after World War 1 by Donald’s grandfather Donald and then taken over by his son Alasdair who was a volunteer at the Golden Shears for many years.

Mat, Linda and Donald Macrae.

Donald followed in his father’s footsteps in running the farm and helping at the Golden Shears, and the couple were asked four years ago if they would be happy to take over the important job of supplying the full wool sheep after the previous supplier, Cross Keys farm at Whareama was sold. Donald agreed, although he was worried about some of the uncertainties of keeping hundreds of sheep unshorn for 12 months. “Initially I thought there would be problems such as cast sheep, fly strike, and the wool being entangled with vegetable matter. “I was also worried that the full wool sheep would lose condition at a critical time just before they were put out to ram. “But the sheep came through well the first year, so I have been happy to carry on.”

Around a month before the Golden Shears starts, volunteer Ken McPherson and his team come out to the farm to select the sheep for the shearing events, aiming for consistency. The week of the Golden Shears, the wool handling sheep are trucked to the farm of Nathan Williams at Te Ore Ore, where they provide grazing and wool shed facilities at no charge, then returned to White Spur after being shorn. While Donald sees it as a honour to provide sheep for the prestige event, he does get a bit nervous. “You are putting your ewes up for shearers who shear some of the best show shearing sheep in New Zealand.” Golden Shears committee member Philip Morrison describes them as “very good stock.”

MKM, designing and manufacturing woolen garments for over 137 years It all started in 1884 when the first ever shearers singlet were created. Even to this day these historical garments are still knitted on the same machine in the Palmerston North based factory and supplied worldwide for shearers across the globe. MKM are also well known for knitting the first All Black jersey back in 1904 – unsurprisingly on the very same machine. Today MKM are a market leader in rural apparel. The signature jersey – the 36.6 Tasman – is made from NZ Wool and manufactured out of the Palmerston North based factory.

The 36.6 Tasman currently helps to keep over 30,000 farmers warm each year over those cold winter months. MKM has quickly become one of the Southern Hemispheres largest knitwear manufacturer and offer a wide range of woollen winter garments and accessories. MKM are proud to be one of the biggest buyers of NZ Wool that is used for knitwear. They are

passionate about the wool industry and sustainability – buying the wool from New Zealand farmers, designing, and manufacturing quality apparel, and selling the garments back to farmers to ensure they are warm and comfortable during those cold winter months. MKM Original garments and accessories are available to purchase from well over 200 stockists in NZ, check out their website www.mkmoriginals.co.nz or to become a stockist. A half century of volunteering Raised on a farm at Mikimiki, Bruce Christensen was just 16 when he first volunteered at the Golden Shears, helping tip sheep for the judges. The newly minted life member has volunteered in all sorts of roles since, from helping with the wool presses to manning the committee bar.

ENTERTAINMENT Playing the people’s music FRIDAY NIGHT Beau Redding is a solo performer who plays a sing-out-loud style of music that keeps audiences engaged and entertained. Playing favourite music from the 1960s through to current hits, Beau delivers great music and good times. Beau was born and bred in Little Rock, Arkansas, playing his first gigs when he was still at school with a band that played pop and rock. He was a full-time musician for many years, playing gigs around the Texas circuit and supporting up and coming acts like LeAnn Rimes. Beau came to New Zealand in 1999, attracted by what looked like a friendly and safe country and has

been entertaining New Zealanders ever since with around 80 gigs a year, mostly in the pop, rock and country vein. Beau writes and sings his own music, and was nominated for a Tui Award for his album Dime Box in 2001. He has released three albums, all of which are available on all the streaming sites. But when it comes to live performance, Beau believes in giving his audience whatever songs and genres they love the most. “I don’t have a set playlist, instead feeling out the crowd and choosing

songs they will like. Within a couple of songs, I can tell what songs people want to hear.” Beau supports his vocals with just his guitar. “I don’t use backing tracks. I like the freedom of being able extend a song if that feels right, or shorten it.” Having performed solo to audiences of 5000 or more, Beau will feel right at home at the Golden Shears with hits from the likes of Tom Petty and The Eagles.

Getting up to Shenanigans SATURDAY NIGHT Back playing the Golden Shears for the third year in a row, The Shenanigans Irish Band will again be promising some good old Irish-country-foot stomping music as Saturday evening’s entertainment. The Shenanigans are one of New Zealand’s most accomplished and sought-after bands in Irish traditional music today. They have garnered much critical acclaim in recent years, even being compared to super groups such as by respected New Zealand Musician Magazine. Their meteoric rise in the music world was given a massive boost in 2011 when they released their album Live 2005. The band subsequently went on to

receive the award for being “The best live act on the Good Morning Show” and were also named “Best Jokers” at The New Zealand Jokers Awards in 2012. Following the tremendous success of their debut album “Ballyscullymuckery”, the group’s

profile was further raised with the release of their follow up, “Live In Your Lounge” in 2018. As well as reconstructing traditional Irish/Celtic tunes that have been around for generations, they enjoy taking well-known contemporary classics and “Irishing” them up.

A PROUD HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND INNOVATION FOR KIWI FARMERS. Our company was first there supporting Golden Shears in 1961. At the time we were known as TVL (Tasman Vaccine Laboratories). Over 60 years later, and Golden Shears remains the world’s premier shearing and wool-handling event, and we continue to support and recognize the parallels between this truly iconic New Zealand event, and what our company, now called MSD Animal Health, offer kiwi farmers. While the name has changed, what does remain in common with the Golden Shears event is a business born and bred in New Zealand, steeped in history, and that has continually innovated and evolved to remain relevant and market leading today. For nearly 80 years our scientists have developed and made vaccines with the aim of improving the health and productivity of New Zealand’s farm animals. The first vaccine developed and available to kiwi farmers in the 1940’s was for the clostridial disease blackleg. It was manufactured at the same Upper Hutt site that today is home to MSD Animal Health, New Zealand’s leading vaccine manufacturer and supplier. At the same site, the first 5-strain clostridial vaccine for NZ farmers was launched. And so was born our first Multine®5-in-1 vaccine, developments of which remain the most widely used range of vaccines in New Zealand today. 50 years of ongoing innovation in this range has seen our latest addition include the convenience and benefits of both vitamin B12 and Selenium - Multine B12 Selenised, which has rapidly become a favored choice on kiwi sheep farms.

As well developing the most extensive range of local vaccines, MSD have expanded their interests into the future of intelligence systems on New Zealand farms, adding the MSD Animal Health Intelligence division – which includes the well-known ALLFLEX Livestock Intelligence brands within the portfolio. Be it ALLFLEX plastic or EID ear tags, or a full livestock monitoring system, the ALLFLEX identification and intelligence products provide practical and actionable information to help farmers run an efficient farm, and get the best for their animals. ALLFLEX’s local development of products, like many of MSDs locally manufactured vaccines and our COOPERS anti-parasitic brands, bring a long and trusted history of strong local, New Zealand innovation onto kiwi farms. MSD sheep vaccines brands are made specifically for New Zealand’s unique conditions and it is this which has made our brand synonymous with trust and the drive to help farmers achieve superior animal health. Ensuring New Zealand’s farmers continue to raise the bar in terms of sheep productivity and farm profitability. Made for New Zealand, in New Zealand. MSD is very proud of our enduring partnership with this iconic brand and we wish the Golden Shears all the best for another great event.

Focusing on keeping livestock healthier and farming more productive is what keep our trusted brands at the forefront of the market. Our vaccines like Toxovax® and Campyvax®4 are used on nearly every sheep farm in NZ. And our clostridial vaccines have been developed further into Covexin® 10, and the manufacturing site in Upper Hutt now exports variations of these innovative vaccines to over 80 countries around the world.

SHARING THE LOVE FOR THE GOLDEN SHEARS. AS A MUTUAL WE ARE ALL ABOUT SHARING. We do so by supporting rural communities and events nationwide, which is why we’re excited to support Golden Shears 2021. And being New Zealand’s leading rural insurer means we know a bit about shearing too. If that sounds like the kind of insurer you’d like to have looking after you, ask around about us. Or better still, call us directly on 0800 366 466. Pictured: Newhaven Farm - Phil Cleland Shearing Photographer: Rachel Wybrow

A CLIENT’S PASSION FOR NEW ZEALAND WOOL. Jane Smith has a passion for Perendale sheep. Having grown up on her parents’ sheep farm in North Otago she now runs a 9,000-stock unit operation called Newhaven Perendales with her husband, Blair. The Smiths’ three children are also the 5th generation to live on the North Otago-based farm. Jane is particularly proud of the Perendale fleece and is an advocate for the many benefits of New Zealand wool, including the fire safety attributes wool has over its synthetic counterparts. “Wool is energy efficient as it’s produced from renewable and natural resources—sheep need to be shorn, and it’s biodegradable. Also, wool is a 100% New Zealand made product. This is something that we value and need to make sure that today’s savvy global consumer does as well,” says Jane.
