Welcome
We are prou to support a We are proud the finalists to support all in the local the finalists
Welcome to the Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards. This day has been a long time in the making. Covid has wreaked havoc over the past two years on hosting an awards evening, but we have finally made it. Tonight, we celebrate a raft of achievements across a range of sporting codes. To the competitors, teams, coaches, administrators and volunteers, congratulations. As a locally owned newspaper, we take our role of reporting sport seriously. We know how important sport is to you and strive to serve up a healthy dose of sport in every issue. Six days a week, we recognise and celebrate local sport – the wins, the close calls, and the disappointment of losing. These Awards are about celebrating the successes of our region’s top sportspeople over the past two years. The Awards also recognise the huge contributions made by sports administrators, clubs, and the hundreds of volunteers who give their time for free to make all this possible. Together, with the tremendous support of local businesses, we are incredibly proud to celebrate local success on and off the field again this year. We congratulate all finalists. Look out for the winners in the Times-Age later in the week.

Guest speaker – Mahé Mahe Drysdale needs no introduction. From being carried out of his skiff and being violently ill after finishing third in the 2008 Beijing singles scull to winning in a nail-biting photo finish victory at Rio in 2016, Mahe’s story is one of guts and sheer determination. His never say die attitude is evident that it was only in 2021 that the 42-year-old called time on his glittering career after being overlooked for another crack at Olympic glory.
Mahe is the winner of two Olympic gold medals, at London in 2012, and by millimetres at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and five World Championships from 2005 to 2011. He won the Halberg Supreme Award once in 2006, and five Halberg Sportsman of the Year Awards from 2006 to 2016. A little known fact is that Mahe also represented New Zealand in canoe polo at age group level.

Wairarapa Times-Age proudly celebrating sporting excellence in our community The Wairarapa Times-Age is thrilled to be celebrating the achievements of our top Wairarapa Sports people.
vote is a quarter of the total vote and the public vote counted towards a quarter. The winners of all 15 categories will automatically become finalists for the Supreme Award.
Organised by the Wairarapa Times-Age, the awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of Wairarapa’s sporting community.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises the lifetime achievements of anyone involved in Wairarapa Sports.
Wairarapa has an incredibly rich sporting history for a small region, and recent achievements deserve their day in the sun just as much as their predecessors. This year’s awards recognise achievements from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. There are 15 categories covering officials, teams, schools, volunteers and administrators. Finalists of the 15 award
categories are determined by the nominations received by members of public. The judges narrow down the nominations to select finalists for each category.
A combination of the public vote and judges vote determines the category winners. An independent judging panel of three judges were appointed. Each judge’s
A relatively new award category is the People’s Choice Award where Wairarapa residents have their direct say as to what finalist they believe should be recognised for their contribution to local sport. The Awards would not be possible without the support from our sponsors, we value and thank you for your commitment to this event.

Junior Sports Team of the Year
Open to primary/intermediate school teams that have achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.
Douglas Villa Under 13 Minibeans - Football team The Douglas Villa Minibeans overcame the regular travel over the Remutaka Hill to dominate the strong Capital Football 13th Grade Junior Premier League [JPL]. The Minibeans won all of their 17 games in the JPL, scoring a mammoth 87 goals and conceding only 14. They were on target to play in the top four final when the season was curtailed with the onset of the covid-19 alert level 4 restrictions in August.
Masterton Intermediate School Aces - Netball team The Aces were unbeaten in the Primary netball grade one competition in 2021 beating every team by a margin of at least 50 points. It was a disjointed season due to covid-19 restrictions cancelling their big WRISSA Netball event with 16 other Wellington Intermediate schools, a tournament the Aces were confident of performing well in. They also attended the Vikings tournament held in Dannevirke and were unbeaten.
Masterton Intermediate School Girls - Volleyball team Despite there being no competitive volleyball leagues for primary schools in Wairarapa, the MIS girls volleyball team outshone their opponents at the Wellington Region Intermediate Schools tournament played at the ASB Stadium in Kilbirnie in August. MIS were unbeaten, and won all eight games, including a convincing 25-12 win over Levin Intermediate School in the final.
Pioneer Under 13 - Rugby team Pioneer were unbeaten throughout the 2021 WairarapaBush Rugby Union Under-13 championship. The team were unstoppable playing an attractive brand of attacking rugby in winning all 10 games, most by wide score lines. Pioneer’s smallest winning margin was 20 points [34-14] against a combined Martinborough-Tuhirangi side. Over the season Pioneer scored a massive 288 points and conceded only 62 points. Open to secondary school teams that have achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.
Rathkeale College - Clay Bird Shooting team The Rathkeale Clay Bird shooting capped an outstanding season finishing second at the highly competitive North Island Clay Bird Shooting Championships at Hamilton. The team of Eddie Harris, Daniel Thomas, Angus Wilkinson, Corrin Prince, and Henry Borthwick also achieved several high individual places. Harris was in superb form winning the North Island Single Rise HOA Jono Baynon Trophy for first senior.
Rathkeale College - Cross-country team The Rathkeale Cross-country team finished second in the senior grade at the Wellington region cross-country championships, and sixth in the juniors. The team also dominated the Wairarapa Secondary School Championships. Rathkeale runners filled the first three places in the senior under-20 grade, were first, second, sixth and seventh in the under-16s, and filled nine of the top 12 places in the year nine class, including first and second.
Wairarapa College - A Netball team
Wairarapa College held their nerve to beat Celtic 53-52 and win their first Netball Wairarapa Premier One Championship in 16 years. In a thrilling encounter at the Trust House Wairarapa Netball Centre, Waicol came from eight goals down early in the second quarter to take a 38-37 advantage into the final 15-minute period. The students extended their lead to four goals midway through the fourth quarter, only for Celtic to claw their way back to one goal, but Waicol kept their cool and slotted their goals to cap an outstanding victory.
Wairarapa College - Girls 1ST XI Hockey team Wairarapa College defeated old foes St Matthew’s Collegiate 5-0 to win the Manawatu Intercity Secondary School Girls Premier Championship. St Matt’s had won both previous clashes during the season, but were no match for a fired up Waicol, who put the result out of reach in the first half scoring three goals. Maddie Taylor netted a hat-trick, while Mandy Yeo and Alana Lowe scored a goal apiece in the dominant performance. The victory was the first time Waicol have won the combined competition involving colleges from Manawatu, Wairarapa, Horowhenua, and Whanganui, since joining it in 2020.

Dalefield Premier Women’s - Hockey team Dalefield won their second consecutive Wellington Premier Championship in a tense final with Harbour City. For the second year in a row the final went to a shootout after the scores were locked together [1-1] at fulltime. Goalkeeper Amy Rossiter-Stead stepped up and saved all of the opposition’s shootout attempts, repeating her effort from the previous year’s final. While RossiterStead thwarted all of Harbour City’s attempts, firstly Brigette Mossman, then Felicity Reidy and finally Maddy Taylor converted their chances to seal the championship victory.
Douglas Villa Magpies - Football team Douglas Villa Magpies punched above their weight to win promotion to Capital Two in their first season in Capital Three. After being promoted to division three in their first year back in the Capital Football Leagues, Douglas Villa were expected to take some time to adapt to the higher division. However, the Magpies performed consistently throughout the season and finished second, on goal difference to league winners Petone, to earn their second promotion in two years. Douglas Villa was the only team to beat Petone over the season.
Greytown Premier - Rugby team Greytown completed a rare unbeaten season in Wairarapa-Bush premier club rugby with a 30-25 victory over Carterton in the Chris ‘Moose’ Kapene Memorial Cup final. Greytown had the early advantage and took a 9-0 lead after the first 20 minutes, but Carterton fought back and led 15-9 at the break. Three tries to Greytown in the third-quarter sealed the victory. Greytown won all 12 matches, with the highlight [apart from the final] being the 63-21 demolition of Eketahuna in the Lane Penn Trophy for the Town and Country series.
Wairarapa Korus - Cricket team The Wairarapa Korus finished second in the Mike Shrimpton Trophy – Central Districts’ premier trophy for women’s cricket. The team won five of their eight games, with two early season losses to Manawatu deciding the competition. The Korus finished ahead of traditional strongholds Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki. Three players – Melissa Hansen, Ocean Bartlett, and Gemma Sims represented the Central Hinds. Five players were also in the national title winning CD Under-19 side.

The club’s top team played in Capital Division Three, finishing second and winning promotion to Capital Two for 2022. The Douglas Villa Minibeans were unbeaten in the Capital Under-13 Junior Premier League, winning all 17 games. The club has established the Villa Training Centre to help develop promising junior players.
Giants Softball Club Giants overcame significant hurdles over the 2021-22 to win two Intercity championships. The Blues went on to win the Premier Three top section championship, while the Red won the bottom section, after having started the season playing in the Hutt Valley Presidents Grade. Giants other teams also had some success in Hutt Valley competitions. The women made the Major B top five, and the under-15s qualified for their championship semi-finals.
Greytown Rugby Club The Greytown premier side completed an unbeaten season in the Wairarapa-Bush premier grade. The team won all 12 games, in claiming the Chris ‘Moose’ Kapene Memorial Cup for the premier championship, and the inaugural Lane Penn Trophy for the ‘Town and Country’ series. Under astute administration the club continues to flourish and plays an integral role in the Greytown community.
Opaki Tennis Club Opaki Tennis Club is the heart and soul of the Opaki community. The club has a fantastic culture and spirit, which is evident with 25-plus members turning up for the weekly club nights. Thirtytwo members entered the 2021-22 club championships, up from 20 the previous year, and more than 15 juniors receive regular coaching. Opaki was the only club with three teams in senior interclub, winning the regional two championship for the third year in a row.

Katherine Reisima [nee van Woerkom] coached Dalefield to win the Wellington Premier Championship for the second year in a row, in her first season as player-coach. The team overcame some early season losses to qualify for the top four. There they beat Hutt United to set up a final against Harbour City. Dalefield held a 1-0 lead until conceding a goal in the last minute, which sent the game to a shootout. Dalefield goalkeeper Amy RossiterStead saved all three Harbour City attempts, while Dalefield scored all three to lift the trophy.
Mark and Paul coached Greytown to the first unbeaten season in WairarapaBush premier club rugby in about 15 years. Not only did Greytown win the Chris ‘Moose’ Kapene Memorial Cup as premier champions by triumphing 30-25 over Carterton in the final, they lifted the Lane Penn Trophy for winning the inaugural ‘Town and Country’ series, beating Eketahuna 63-21 in an outstanding display of attacking rugby in the final played in front of a passionate home crowd.

Then he’s on the side-lines, usually carrying the water bottles, or helping in any way that he can.
