Volunteer of the Year
An award acknowledging people who have volunteered their time, labour and talents to improving Wairarapa sport. Recognises the volunteer’s entire career span.
Carol MacDonald
ATHLETICS
Carol has filled many roles for Athletics and Cycling Masterton [ACM] for many years, including being a regular timekeeper and marathon helper. In the past two-three years she has taken on more roles, all of which have been efficiently and successfully implemented. Carol is responsible for updating the harriers’ section of the ACM website, and draws up the club’s programme. Carol is a stalwart of ACM, and is totally committed, attending every event and being the go-to person for any problems.
Dennis Burling
FOOTBALL
Dennis is a life member of Douglas Villa AFC. Over the years he has held multiple roles at the club, from playing to coaching, managing junior and representative teams, as well as the senior men’s team in the Capital Federation competitions. In 2021 Dennis was the Douglas Villa treasurer, a role he has held for several years. He also marks out fields, helps behind the bar, and cooks food for visiting teams, or cleaning and preparing for the next event. Dennis is also a coordinator of the Douglas Villa junior tournament – the club’s major fundraiser.
Nifo Tauiliili
FEATHERSTON SPORT
Nifo does an outstanding job as the key volunteer running the Featherston Sports Hub. She dedicates her life to the children of Featherston, ensuring they have access to sports, all the gear needed, food in their bellies, and transport. She even coaches teams. Nifo is chief fundraiser, marketer and organising queen for all kids sport - rugby, netball, league, cricket, and athletics – and has been the main force behind the growth of junior sport in Featherston.
Rod Sutherland
CYCLING/ ATHLETICS
Rod Sutherland has been a member of Athletics and Cycling Masterton [ACM] for 63 years. In that time Rod has assisted with the running of the Wairarapa Country Marathon, as well as many other harrier events, and cycling events. He helped instigate the organisation of the Pedal for Parkinsons cycle ride in conjunction with the annual Huri Huri cycling event. Rod has also supported several local people with disabilities and sight impairment as a tandem cyclist, allowing them to maintain physical fitness and compete in cycling events.
