THE WORLD’S PREMIER SHEARING AND WOOL HANDLING CHAMPIONSHIP
WELCOME Golden Shears President’s welcome On behalf of Golden Shears it gives me much pleasure to welcome everyone to the 61ST Golden Shears. It seems strange to not have run for two years because of Covid19 but other organisations are finding this also. Huge thanks to our dedicated committee who stuck with it and continued to attend our monthly meetings where possible to keep everyone together and keep enthusiasm up. We thank all our sponsors for their continued support and loyalty. Our main ones being Bayleys, PGG Wrightson, Masterton Trust Lands Trust, Lister, Shear Expertise and Wero NZ Mānuka Honey and also Masterton District Council for their continued support. Thanks also to outgoing Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson for your years of support and welcome to our new Mayor Gary Caffell and his new council. I am sure our good relationship will continue. In the last two years, Pinfolds Transport
our transport carrier retired their trucking business after many years of transporting sheep for us to and from the Shears. A huge thank you for years of service and support to us. We welcome Martinborough Transport who have now stepped into this role. This year is about getting up and running again remembering all the little things as well as the large ones. We have invited our friends across the Tasman again. The Australian Team are Jim Murray (Team Manager), Daniel McIntyre, Sam Mackrill, Nathan Meaney (Shearers), Mark Purcell and Racheal Hutchinson (Woolhandlers), Marjorie Carpenter and Greg Drew (Judges). With all that has happened in the last two years we have learnt some lessons. We carry on, as the sheep still have to be shorn, we like to encourage and mentor new people in our industry and value all those working in it. The competition could not run without our local sheep
suppliers who are also passionate about our industry and really go the extra mile to ensure we have top quality sheep for the competitions. Enjoy our 61ST Golden Shears. Sam Saunders, President
Mayor’s message When you talk of places becoming synonymous with an event, Masterton and Golden Shears would have to be at the forefront of any conversation. The two have gone hand in hand since the inaugural Golden Shears was held way back in 1961, and Masterton can take great pride in being recognised as the venue of what is widely regarded as the premier shearing and wool handling competition on the planet. That Golden Shears has achieved iconic status is due to several factors; first and foremost of which has been the determination of those responsible for its organisation to maintain and enhance the lofty standards set by its founders so many years ago. Events like this do not happen by chance, they take enormous commitment by all those involved behind the scenes, people who do it for the love of the sport rather than any monetary gains. Their contribution to
the continued success of Golden Shears is massive. This attention to detail is a prime reason why year after year Golden Shears attracts entries big in numbers and super big in quality. Anybody who has any doubts about the latter need only take a cursory glance at the list of winners of the open shearing title. The names there are truly the “who’s who” of shearing on a global basis. No wonder the event has five-star billing the world over. Making Golden Shears 2023 that little bit extra special is that with Covid restrictions no longer playing havoc with events of this nature, we can again expect the War Memorial Stadium to be packed to the gunnels as we get down to the business end of proceedings. Many a time over the years the roar of the crowd has threatened to lift off the stadium roof, and I would expect nothing less this time round.
On behalf of the Masterton district, a big and hearty welcome to Golden Shears; enjoy the experience! Gary Caffell, Masterton Mayor

GOLD AWARDS Vibrant Golden Shears wins gold award The Golden Shears earned another accolade when it won the Vibrant Gold Award at the 2020 Wellington Gold Awards. Founded in 1999, the Wellington Gold Awards in association with The Dominion Post celebrates the excellence and enterprise of businesses in the Wellington region. There are eight industry categories with the Vibrant Gold Award focusing on events, hospitality and tourism facilities. The Gold Awards are held annually in TSB Arena, and are attended by 900 or so guests, including Members of
Parliament, the region’s mayors and many business leaders.
year the entry deadline was left open a bit longer because of Covid, so we had more time to put in an entry.”
On the Gold Awards website Golden Shears President Sam Saunders is quoted as saying: “Over 450 people competed in 2020 over three and a half days in shearing, wool handling and pressing. The 2020 livestream reached a record 129,000 viewers.
The timing of the award is fitting, says Sam, as 2020 saw the Golden Shears celebrate its 60th anniversary.
“Masterton War Memorial Stadium, the venue, holds approximately 1200 spectators and was near capacity for both finals nights. This event brings in a large number of visitors each year to Masterton which is very advantageous for our local economy.” Looking back today, Sam says the Golden Shears had considered entering the awards in the past “but it always came at a time when the Golden Shears was on and we were pretty busy with other things. Last

“Receiving the award is recognition of what our committee has done over the past 60 years in entertainment and industry.” Finance Minister Grant Roberston presented the award, which saw eight Golden Shears committee members and their partners at the event. Sam says he knew the Golden Shears was in with a chance of winning, “but I never count my chickens before they hatch”. He says the success of the event comes down to the passion of its volunteers, and the prestige of the event, which

has been maintained for more than half a century. “We are the top competition of shearing in the world, even by competitor numbers. So we run what looks like a professional show, run by amateurs – we just like to be very thorough in what we do and provide a real spectacle, especially when the events get a bit faster and a bit tougher. “We’re lucky that the older people that have been running the event in the past are all still around. They’re always there to provide backup and support, which is really good to have.”

GOLDEN SHEARS 2023
JOEL HENARE If one were to do a bit of conjecturing, Joel Henare might be looking towards a goal which could disappear at any time – to be the greatest Golden Shears champion of all time. Well, almost, for if it’s defined by the most Golden Shears wins in a row he is, as winner of the Open Wool Handling title in all eight years since 2013, in sight of the record of 12 by David Fagan in the Open Shearing Championship from 1990 to 2001 – even if it does get harder every year. He’s been in the Golden Shears Open final in all 14 years he’s been in the top grade. Third as a 14-year-old in 2007, 4th in 2008, and runner-up in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, before embarking on his sequence of wins. In 14 seasons in the Open grade, he’s not once failed to qualify for the Golden Shears Open final. He’s won four World titles – only late idol Joanne Kumeroa won more – and his 14 Trans Tasman tests is a record in wool handling internationals. The fact is that at the age of 27 he’s achieved just about everything there is to achieve including retiring, which he more or less did two years ago, as short-lived as it was. The “retirement” came at the time of his 2019 Golden Shears win, the 100th Open of his career, which from winning the New Zealand Wool Handler of the Year in Balclutha at the age of 15, and becoming in 2014 easily the youngest person acclaimed by Shearing Sports New Zealand as either a Master Shearer or Master Wool handler, is remarkable
Joel Henare competing in the Open Wool Handling quarter final in 2020. in the annals of New Zealand Sport. In short it makes him the Jonah Lomu or Kane Williamson of shearing sports, the difference being it didn’t include having to stay at school to prepare him for the real world on the outside. While Gisborne is home, school, in the sheep-chasing nature of the shearing industry, was the woolsheds of Central Otago, between what time was required in the classroom, mainly in Cromwell. By the time he had his first win in competition, aged 12, at Lumsden in January 2005, he was tagging along with mum Greta, already well-known in the industry and the sport, with more aunties than he cared to count. His mum and the aunties have been the mentors, for sure, but the Golden Shears heritage goes right back to the
start in 1961. His dad was a shearer, whose father’s brother, Mac Potae, was 4th in the first Golden Shears Open shearing final. Another brother, George Potae, won the big title in 1968. Joel’s grandmother, Vicky Maitland, won the Otago championships’ first New Zealand Wool Handler of the Year final. His first Golden Shears was an experience in itself, a 13-year-old piling into contractor Peter Lyon’s van for a venture of uncharted waters, a roadtrip north from Alexandra not knowing quite what to expect. One of the party, Gina Nathan, won the Open Wool Handling final, as was the case also in 2006. Joel missed the Junior final by just one place, being beaten into the top four, he notes, by Elaine Robin, also from Gisborne and who died in a crash a few weeks later.

He stayed with friends he’d met in Alexandra, and it set the routine as he stayed most years with Nicole and Sparrow, on reflection a significant factor as he prepared for the toughest three days of the year, sometimes fighting for the Golden Shears Open title with people he worked with for the other 52 weeks. “It’s just keeping on track,” he says, revealing it was his mum who kept pulling him up, even when he went through a phase hating competitions. When it comes to winning the Golden Shears Open, “you’ve got to be on the right frequency,” he says. Only once, he says, has he come off the board at the end of the final confident he’d won – in 2019, when he was retiring. In the last “couple” of wins, he’s had other things on his mind, like children – Keanu, 7, Hikurangi, 6, and Lee, 5, and their mum, Erica, a former lower grades wool handling champion,
who now lives in Nelson. If he missed a few days at school back in the day, it doesn’t show, his knowledge of the industry clear as he steps into the role of arena commentator at shows around the country. But really, it’s all about the big event in Masterton.

PADDY MASON Food parcels replace shearing during Covid lockdown Paddy Mason is well-known for his contribution to the Golden Shears, supplying the team of shearers who shear the sheep for the wool handling competitions. But his volunteer work took a different turn when Paddy, wife Charmaine and children Matene, Emma, Tama and Ana started putting together food parcels and delivering them to kaumātua during the Covid lockdown. The initiative rapidly grew with Paddy getting donations from different sources and increasing the range of beneficiaries to include needy families. Once the lockdown went up to level 3, the extended Mason family joined in, and by the end of the lockdown, the family had delivered around 15,000 food parcels. With the lockdown now in the past, Paddy is back at the Golden Shears supplying the shearers to shear around 700 sheep for the wool handling events. Not only is skill required to shear the full wool (once a year) sheep in order that the wool handlers have a complete fleece for maximum visual effect, but the shearers have to pace themselves as
Paddy Mason. a team for the level of skill of each wool handling event. The Mason family has been volunteering at the Golden Shears since its inception. Paddy’s grandmother Hinerau Mason was a resident wool handler at the Golden Shears from when it started in 1961, and always encouraged the younger members of her extended family to take part. Paddy originally sheared for Hinerau who ran her own shearing team. He established Shear Expertise with business partner Colin Brown in 2006 and became the sole owner in 2016. Since 2019 Shear Expertise has sponsored the Open Wool Handling championship, the winner of which wins
the Hinerau Mason Memorial Trophy. Paddy and Charmaine’s children are part of the business with Matene Mason winning the Golden Shears Senior Shearing title in 2011. Paddy’s wife Charmaine and daughter Emma do administration for Shear Expertise, while younger son Tama and younger daughter Ana work for the team during the school holidays. Most of Shear Expertise’s shearing is done in the Wairarapa, although they also shear on the Mercury Islands off the Coromandel Peninsula, Mahia Peninsula in Hawke’s Bay, and a few other locations outside the region. GOLDEN SHEARS 2023
JUDGING In a nutshell In all disciplines, a penalty system for points is used; the lower the total the better.
WOOL PRESSING Competitors are judged on workmanship, safety and technique.
2020 WOOL HANDLING JUDGES
FROM LEFT: Mori Gibbs, Myles Oldershaw, Gail Haitana, Dawn Ratana, Hine Thompson, Jo Hopkirk, Bo Paku-Clark, Gail Holmes, Roxanne Roxburgh, Pauline Smith (AUS), Linda Tarrant, Peter Lange. Absent: Ian Hopkirk.
Loading the press, tramping, pressing the bale, capping and completion of bale are the most important judging criteria. Bale target weights are set with penalties for being over or under weight. Time points are deducted at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof.
WOOL HANDLING Judging is divided into two sections; Board (what the audience sees) and Wool Assessment.
Board Judging Takes into account the tidiness and efficiency of the competitor, the throw and skirting of the fleece, plus the roll and placement into a fadge. Fleeces are ‘skirted’ for finer neck wool, stained side wool, short wool and for other faults as necessary. Skirtings are separated and placed in baskets.
2020 SHEARING JUDGES
FROM LEFT BACK ROW: Richard Waddell, Neil Fagan, Max Flood (AUS), Willie Buick, Matt Johnson, Kevin Boyd, Robert McLaren, Allan Patterson, Allan Grant, Philip Morrison, Dave Brooker, Richard France, Mark Barrowcliffe, Joanne Mead. FRONT ROW: Allan Pretious, Russell Knight, Ken Macpherson, Graham McNae, Ronald King. Absent: Donald Macrae.
Wool Assessment Fleeces and oddments are removed from the board for assessment. Fleeces should be free of skirtings and each basket should have a different type of wool. Whole points are accumulated from the board and assessment judging. Sealed times are set for each grade,

from the shearer finishing to when the competitor should finish. Time points accumulate for the sealed time but increase five-fold past that time. Board, assessment and time penalties are added for the total points.
SHEARING Competitors are judged while shearing and in the outside pens for overall quality. Shearing the sheep, a second cut or double cut of wool staple is penalised. A second cut of 11mm x 10mm x 85mm long (or the accumulation of smaller second cuts) accrues a 1 stroke penalty. The shorn sheep is judged for wool left on at the same penalty value as above. Skin cuts are also penalised. Penalty strokes on the board and from the pen judging are divided by the number of sheep shorn to give a quality points total. Time points are calculated at 1 point for every 20 seconds elapsed or part thereof. Quality points and time points are added together for the competitor’s total score.

OBITUARIES Selwyn Tomlin
Bruce Arcus
BY GAVIN TANKERSLEY
BY DAVID BOWIE Bruce was born on the family farm Sedd-el-Bahr on the Hinakura Hills east of Martinborough. He left school at 16 and with a team of dogs, worked on many stations including Te Kopi before returning home in 1958 with wife Joy to take over the family farm and set up a successful Perendale Stud.
Selwyn was an example of the good Kiwi bloke. His father served in World War 2 and he, at an early age, went through those difficult years at home with his mother. This gave Selwyn a compassionate outlook on life, to be helpful and giving to those around him. He could be excitable and you knew when he wasn’t pleased but under the gruff and abrupt manner was a heart of gold. To Golden Shears and the Lions organisation he gave his all and was recognised nationally for his efforts. His involvement with Golden Shears began in 1969 as YFC chairman and continued as a shearing judge, sheep officer, executive committee member, chair or shearing committee, vice-president and life membership. In the mid ‘80s Selwyn and brother Murray revived the Golden Shears Woolhandling competition with full fleece sheep to recognise the importance of woolhandling to the wool industry. It was also at this time Selwyn and wife Jane established the Wednesday night dinner for New Zealand and overseas judges. This recognised their commitment and importance to the running of the competition and developed camaraderie. (In another move he was involved in the formation of the shearing and
stadium committees to streamline the operation and bring more people into the organisation.) Over the years Selwyn came to be known as the “Colonel”, always looking to fine tune improvements to the event and forthright in planning succession of roles when new blood was needed. For the 2012 Golden Shears competition Selwyn chaired the Jubilee committee. He, supported again by Jane, organised a celebration Garden Party to recognise the contribution the Young Farmer’s organisation of the Miss Golden Shears and Make ‘n Model competitions had made over the years to Golden Shears. As Laurie Keats (patron and former president of Golden Shears) once said “Selwyn was the man you could rely on to get the job done”. Golden Shears owes Jane, sons Nigel, Hamish and daughter Vicky so much for giving him the time to dedicate over 50 years of service to the society.
Bruce was involved with Golden Shears on the committee, and long term as a time keeper for over 50 years. He was awarded Life Membership in 2010. For over 30 years Bruce was also official Measuring Steward for the Wairarapa Horse Society. Bruce and Joy moved to a small farm in Parkvale in 1979 and Bruce became very involved in the A&P Society at Clareville serving a term as president. Bruce and Joy spent many years as Showjumping judges, and in 2011 he was presented with a Charles Rooking Carter Award for outstanding community service in Carterton. Bruce passed away in January 2022.

THE WORLD’S PREMIER SHEARING AND WOOL HANDLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Tom Brough
Ronnie Goss
BY DES WILLIAMS
BY DOUG LAING There were times when words could not have paid more poignant tributes for Veronica (Ronnie) Goss, whose wins in Open-class wool handling spanned 22 years, from her first Open win at the Wairarapa A&P Show in 1995 to the last at her home Apiti YFC Sports competition in 2017. Bestowed Master Woolhandler status by Shearing Sports New Zealand 20 years ago, she reached the Golden Shears Open final six times, winning the title in 2008. She won the New Zealand Shears Open final in Te Kuiti in 1999 and 2003, as well as being runner-up to England champion Hilary Bond in the 2014 World Championships final in Ireland, and second, with Joel Henare, in the teams event. Ronnie also represented New Zealand in 10 TransTasman wool handling test matches, from 2002 in Esperance, West Australia, to 2015 in Masterton. It was fitting that the Open final at Apiti the day after she passed away, was won by niece Angela Stevens, who had been taught her wool handling skills by Ronnie. Ronnie was well known for her encouragement of young competitors, and was for several years the wool handling North Island delegate to the Shearing Sports New Zealand national committee. A quote from former Golden Shears president, Mavis Mullins; “There were just no words to describe the sorrow in the community, given the respect held for Ronnie Goss across the industry and sport - Ronnie is a legend.”
It was David Fagan (long before receiving his Royal shoulder tap) who loosely suggested that a shearer would not be remembered if he didn’t win the Golden Shears Open Championship. Without any malice intended towards those who had not, he was merely acknowledging that many had tried and few had succeeded since that Saturday night in March of 1961. Aubrey Thomas (Tom) Brough (1941-2021) did win the Golden Shears Open Championship, 47 years ago in 1976 and so, by Fagan’s ‘yardstick’, he will be remembered for his shearing exploits. But he will be remembered for much more than that (how about for nearly 81 years on this earth lived honestly and true). Tom’s career has been well-documented through his wonderful autobiography, The Way it Was. His move north to Okaihau upon leaving high school to work with his uncle, Trevor Brough, proved to be the perfect start and soon he was shearing sheep with the sole ambition of some day owning his own farm. Before too long he was working alongside legends of our industry – Bing Macdonald, Manu Rangiawha and Co, learning and practising everything they had to teach him.
And shearing at competitions, trying his skills against the best at small country venues and graduating to the big stage at Masterton, where the dream was first formed in 1961, and brought to fruition 15 years later. Tom Brough, with his name up there beside Bowen, Macdonald, Waterson, Symon, Quinn, Potae, Reidy and Blackwell. With that task finally out of the way, Tom focused on becoming a top King Country farmer and conservationist with a keen and practical interest in managing his property with the environment’s best interests at heart. And pig hunting – did we mention pig hunting? Just let’s say he caught a few in his time. Tom never went back to Golden Shears as a competitor, though he remained a loyal supporter of, and attender at, the ‘Shears’ for the rest of his life. Like that bloke in a popular John Williamson Aussie ballad, it could be said of Tom Brough that he was ‘never guilty of wasting daylight’. He lived a full and interesting life with his wife Larraine, and together they travelled extensively overseas. How many countries did they visit. More than a hundred were mentioned at some stage. It’s agreed, we will remember Tom Brough because he won the Golden Shears. But more importantly, you always knew where you stood with Tom and that’s an even better reason why he will be long-remembered. RIP, special man.

GOLDEN SHEARS 2023
SNIPPETS Welcome back Following cancellations of both the 2021 and 2022 Golden Shears, the Committee welcomes competitors and audiences back for its 61ST Championships. With all the organising completed, it was heart breaking to have to cancel the 2021 Shears on the Sunday, just 4 days prior, due to imposed Covid restrictions. Golden Shears had never been cancelled prior to 2021.
Stihl Shop Masterton A long time sponsor of Golden Shears is Jeremy Sharp of Stihl Shop Masterton. Jeremy has been a keen follower of the wool pressing events as a result of his nephew having success in this discipline. Willy Sharp won three men’s singles titles in 1994-96, and was a partner in winning six pairs between 1993 and 2003. In recognition of Willy’s success, the family donated the Sharp Family Silver Platters as a trophy for the pairs title winners. Stihl Shop Masterton kindly support the Friday night program which commences with the final of the Pairs Wool Pressing on the front stage of the stadium.

The two wool handlers will be the top two placings from the qualifying event here at Golden Shears, plus the winner of the Open shearing will be a member of the team. Accompanying the team are two judges; Donald Johnston (shearing) and Janet Smith (wool handling) and Team Manager. TEAM MANAGER Team Manager is Ronnie King, currently the Chief Referee at Golden Shears,
From Pahiatua, Ronnie was a fulltime shearer for 18 years; contracting for 10 years, and has been a shearing judge for 20 years. He is now a sheep and beef farmer with 680 hectares immediately west of Pahiatua. Ronnie has previously been to the United Kingdom as manager/judge of the two member shearing team in 2015. In 2017 he received the Referee/ Judge of the Year Award at the annual Maori Sports Awards.
Milestone reached The National Shearing Circuit reached a milestone in March 2022, completing 50 years of the competition. With the influence of Covid restrictions which meant the cancellation of Golden Shears in 2021 & 2022, the finals of the prestigious event have been held at the NZ Championships in Te Kuiti and on Allan Patterson's
property near Ranfurly respectively. At stake is the magnificent McSkimming Memorial Triple Crown, so named from the initial competitions at Alexandra, Waimate and Golden Shears. The trophy was donated by Mrs R. V. McSkimming in honour of her husband Mr Fred McSkimming.

GOLDEN SHEARS 2023
50 YEARS OF VOLUNTEERING Honouring Bruce and Bill Bruce Caseley and Bill Hutchings began volunteering at Golden Shears as keen members of a local Young Farmers Club. The year was 1971. They’ve hardly missed a year since.
Times-Age selling rural advertising, and spent half of every year for about a decade driving trucks in Texas for silage harvest. “I’m retired now,” he says.
Golden Shears will honour these stalwarts in a ceremony on Saturday night, awarding them badges for 50 Years of Golden Shears volunteering.
“We started out at Golden Shears tipping sheep,” Bruce says. ‘Tipping’ involves “turning the sheep once they’re shorn, so the judge can assess the quality of the shearing”.
“A lot of our volunteers have come from the Young Farmers Clubs,” Bill says. The age of retirement from the clubs is 30, but Bruce and Bill did not let that get in the way of their volunteering at Golden Shears. They carried on. “There’s nothing like the Golden Shears,” says Bruce, who was brought up on a farm, has worked in farming since the early 1990s, and tutored for eight years at Taratahi. He’s also sold and managed life insurance, worked for the Wairarapa
Bill grew up on a dairy farm, spent seven years milking cows, before going on to work for an impressive 44 years for the government, testing Wairarapa’s cattle for nasties like TB and Brucellosis. As well as tipping sheep for Golden Shears, Bruce and Bill have registered entrants, calculated shearing points (with a team of six) before points for the shearing were computerised, calculated points for wool pressing and wool handling events, been committee members, been treasurer, run the yards, edited the programme, worked the bar, and helping to crutch the sheep before they go to the Golden Shears to be shorn. Whew! “Presenting the sheep in good shape gives the competitors a good

chance to perform well,” Bruce says. Bill and Bruce both stay for the entire Golden Shears from start to finish. “It gets into your blood. You’ve got to stay to watch the open final.” They get involved for the pleasure, the people, and the buzz. They have some good stories, too. Bruce and Bill can remember years when foreign exchange students came together at Golden Shears to shear in the novice heats and to have a jolly good time. “They’d never come across anything like it.” Bruce recalls being out the back in the sheep pens in the early days. “We didn’t have the steel shed up then, so we erected a marquee over the sheep. A big wind came up and lifted the whole damn thing off its middle pole. As the pole fell, its spike tore the canvas. One of the chaps ran round to Wrightson’s Grain Store, as it was known then, and fetched a bag-sewer. Two of us held up a long ladder and up he went to sew up the rip in the tent.” Bruce chuckles at the memory. “That was a true Heath Robinson moment.” The Golden Shears is made possible by the volunteers, many of whom, including Bill and Bruce in previous years, take annual leave from work so they can help. Raise a glass to the impressive Golden Shears volunteers.

ENTERTAINMENT Friday Night - The Māori Sidesteps: Flawless Fun The Māori Sidesteps is a contemporary Māori showband based in Wellington. From their first gig in 2016, Jamie McCaskill, Regan Taylor, Cohen Holloway, and Erroll Anderson have entertained audiences up and down the country with their cheeky theatrical presentation of song parodies and subversive messaging – taking their inspiration from the Māori Showbands of the 60s, 70s and 80s such as the Howard Morrison Quartet and the Hi Marks. Founding band member, Jamie McCaskill, describes the band as “an evolution of the Māori Showband, bringing the harmonies and cheekiness of those days into the 2020s”. During a national tour, the Māori Sidesteps were last seen in the Wairarapa in 2019 at the Carterton
Events Centre. “We’ve had lots of messages from fans in the Wairarapa asking us to come back, so we’re stoked we get to play at The Golden Shears in Masterton,” said McCaskill. One audience member at a recent performance described The Māori Sidesteps as “a very entertaining performance of Māori history, comedy, impersonations, and singing that went from classic pop, to waiata, to Sinatra, to kiwi rock, to opera and lots more! All seamlessly delivered with an
impish sense of humour.” With rave reviews, hit web, and TV series, these fabulous performers will deliver your favourite songs with mischievous and hilarious twists.

Saturday Night - Getting up to Shenanigans Fresh from a triumphant evening of music at Wairarapa’s Music in the Country Festival, the premier Irish band Shenanigans is keen for another performance in the region on 4 March this year. The band members Justin, Jane, Maurice, and Paul - love entertaining their audience with high energy, funny, and toe-tapping fiddling, and hilarious banter. Watch out for traditional Irish songs such as Whiskey in the Jar, various Pogue numbers, and Van Morrison’s Moondance. Then there’s all those other songs done with an Irish style. You might get to hear numbers from Rolling Stones, Kenny Rogers, Don McLean, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Crowded House, and many more. Justin became a Shenanigan about twenty years ago after seeing an
ad in the newspaper for a musician and singer for a Celtic band. Fiddler extraordinaire Jane originally heralded from Taranaki but, with Irish greatgrandmothers on both sides of her family, she can actually claim Irish heritage. Drummer Maurice is world

famous in Eketāhuna, and bass player Paul from Dunedin is a former member of OdESSA with many #1 hits in the charts. Expect to experience an evening of unadulterated fun with lots of Shenanigans.
