nother great publication showcasing the marvellous men in Wairarapa.

t has been a privilege to meet many of the men who star in Men @ Work 2023.

This diverse, talented, and downright impressive set of men deserve your time, so stop and have a read – and maybe along the way, use their services or buy their products.

Writing your profile is a partnership with respect to both the content and the process. The written words can only ever be as good as the material you provide, and I thank all the men who had the courage and generosity of spirit to share their stories and key messages with me, unfiltered.

It’s around 10 years that this magazine has been heralding what local men are up to, and the diversity never ceases to amaze. We travel Wairarapa, meet up with these men in their working environment, take a photograph or two, and then tell their story. A noticeable and refreshing feature is the increasing number of young men with families, who are risking all and setting up their own businesses, pointing out they not only want to follow their passion and skill, but want to be available for their children. There’s also a trend towards family members, be it father and son, or brothers, who have teamed up to run their businesses. Sustainability and the awareness of climate change has also been mentioned and at the forefront of many business practices. This will certainly be an increasing trend and one to watch when you attempt to consume conscientiously. These men work long and varied hours to make their jobs and businesses work and another general message from them is to

To those who respected my deadlines and, therefore, my role in this process, I shake your hands. I will remember you when I have need of the services you provide - you are clearly customer focused and organised.

support LOCAL EVERYTIME by using their services or buying their products. They are surprisingly competitive. Many assist sports groups, community efforts and fundraisers. It’s a no brainer not to support them in return. Enjoy the read. Marlene Ditchfield Writer/Photographer

Through writing some of these profiles, I have met business owners with years or even decades of experience under their belts. These are the men who have persevered through the ups and downs of life including year on year shifts in demand and supply, and changes to the economic environment. Congratulations are in order.

It’s comforting to know that the Wairarapa district is so well served by so many very excellent men at work.

Particularly exciting is the number of young men who have had the gumption to start their own businesses, covering everything from tree felling through fixing computers to selling bikes and cycling tours. These young men are motivated, hungry, incredibly hard working, and they have vision.

KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS ROLLING

Devenny Construction

The team at Joe’s Tyres from left: Towai, Shanan, Johnny, Colin, Milli, Matt and Gabriel.

JAMES DEVENNY.

Quality builds and renovations giving pleasure James Devenny and Nick Delaney build high quality homes and do renovations which make your head turn in admiration. Their attention to detail is legendary within the building industry and they enjoy the complex, the ‘different’, and the small jobs. With all builds, the finishing touch and eye for perfection is uppermost in their minds. James set up his business six years ago after time working in Western Australia. Masterton is his hometown and where family is. He trained and qualified as a builder in Wellington, met his wife Kate, and the pair headed offshore for some adventure. The ‘fly-in, fly-out’ aspect of the mines work was fun until their son Maximus was born. James found he wanted to be home more and the decision to return to New Zealand was made. James and Nick have been best mates since college days. Nick moved home from Tauranga five years ago with his young family and has been a big part of the business ever since. Nick, a qualified builder has run his own business and his professionalism and natural rapport with clients and subtrades is a great asset for James. He also has a great eye for detail.

Interesting projects they have worked on is a holiday home in Martinborough in the traditional black cedar. Another is for a Wellington architect who has built a house at Kahutara. Another was a Lockwood house where the roof was lifted at an angle to create more headspace within and look visually intriguing. James and Nick have a detailed knowledge of what materials are available and what works within a design. They then go that extra mile to ensure a beautiful finish. Hear what clients have to say: “James Devenny built our home in Martinborough in 2019. I was retiring from a lifetime in the construction industry in Auckland and I worked closely with him throughout the build. James is a craftsman builder, well organised and accurate with a very high level of competency and integrity.” Kirk Gunman James and his team built our dwelling with a high standard of professionalism and positive attitude. The team had an eye for detail which was enormously helpful to this project. James’ team promptly responded to variations made on site with a can-do attitude. Their performance as a team was exceptional. Philippe Campays.

“It’s very important to all of us at Joe’s Tyres to provide quality service that keeps our client’s vehicles running,” says owner Colin Richardson. At least 80 percent of Joe’s Tyres custom relates to outdoor jobs: in the paddocks with farmers or on the road or in the yard with logger trucks and ag contractors. For commercial vehicles, Joe’s Tyres is on call 24/7 whether it’s a heavy truck, industrial loader, forestry skidder or an agricultural or farming vehicle. The remainder of Joe’s Tyres business takes place in its Villa Street, Masterton shop. With a team of six, and with Colin’s wife Milli in the office, Joe’s Tyres is ready for your call – day or night. The team does business as usual too. Savy equipment operators get their machines maintained. The technicians at Joe’s Tyres do regular servicing of truck fleets, checking for punctures, foreign objects, and tread wear.

Everest Bistro & Café

On the Tiles SHAYNE TYACKE.

Fuelling Wairarapa’s workers with comfort food Shayne Tyacke, owner operator of Everest Bistro and Café, is applying his entrepreneurial spirit to the offerings of Everest Bistro and Café.

Matt Laing at work

Matt Laing has 20 years of indoor and outdoor tiling in Wairarapa, building on tiling skills originally perfected in London’s tube stations. “I was born and bred in Wairarapa,” Matt says. “For three years in the 1990s, however, I escaped overseas and did my big OE. I spent about 18 months living in London and working on the tube stations. We placed 600 x 600 granite pavers along the Jubilee Line from Stratford to Westminster including through the docklands and Greenwich Station beside the Thames River.” Tiling in London was where Matt learned about levels and layouts. Once back in New Zealand, Matt did a few different jobs and then went out on his own as a tiler. Networking is a big part of the business and that, together

with the tiling itself, keeps him busy. He’s just finished a black and white bathroom with a checkerboard floor and herringbone subway tiles on the walls. Matt loves both the big and small tiling jobs and enjoys the social nature of the work. But during his down time, Matt focuses on other loves: diving, fishing, and even raising a few cows and sheep on the one-hectare lifestyle block he’s owned with wife Kathryn for almost 20 years. Both of Matt’s parents had local farming backgrounds and he was bought up on a sheep and beef farm, so raising animals is in his blood.

Making and serving up great food and coffee has been Shayne’s lifeblood since his first job in a Masterton restaurant aged only 15. He’s been ‘front of house’ in Masterton’s Iberia and owned Masterton’s former ice cream shop. Shayne is a former student of Wairarapa College and Fernridge country school and has happy memories of spending time on the farm with his grandparents. He helped his nana fill the baking tins for the week and even made dinner. In the Everest Bistro & Café, the menu offers back to basics, New Zealandinspired comfort food. “We sell food that allows our local, hard-working pioneers to fuel up and get going,” Shayne says. Both sweets and savouries are available including hearty pies, sausage rolls, filo pastries, chips, eggs benedict, steak sandwiches, and even mince on toast with bacon and eggs. The dinner menu includes pizza, bruschetta chips, loaded chips, and specials listed on the board. Wonderful coffee is on offer day

and night. They’ve got a fabulous new coffee machine and a new blend of Flight coffee. Everest Café is generally open six days a week and, from 1 December, it’s open 8am to 4pm, with late nights to 7pm on Friday and Saturday. “We also cater out for meetings and morning tea shouts,” says Shayne, “and you can book the Café for private evening functions.” And there’s an alcohol licence for all the hours they’re open. Once a month on a Sunday, Cuisine Nights offer a menu based on a different culture. As well, once every couple of months on a Friday night, the Bistro & Café runs a quiz night, donating the proceeds to charity. You can work your way through pizza and chips, have a wine or two, and be part of the family-friendly fun too. Keep an eye on Everest’s Facebook page for a new menu coming up.

“Back in the day I also dived for paua on a commercial basis, and I kept bees from the age of about 16, making all my own gear and enjoying contact with local farmers.”

Inner works

When former Wairarapa College student Joseph Olszewski expressed an interest in joining Tranzit, New Zealand’s largest family-owned bus and coach company, he didn’t realise the career trajectory it would set him on. Initially helping in the main workshop three days a week after school, Joseph quickly became a valued team member, beginning a diesel mechanic apprenticeship under the guidance of Tranzit’s National Fleet Manager, Daryn Murphy, and Masterton Workshop Foreman, Gareth Price. Working on a fleet of more than 2000 vehicles ranging from vans, Euro 6 diesel buses and touring coaches, through to double deck electric buses provided Joseph with an exceptional training ground. So much so, he recently gained his NZ Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering Road Transport/Level 4. “Now, I’m thinking about doing a NZ Certificate in Electric Vehicle Automotive Engineering/ Level 4,” Joseph says, “so I can remain relevant with new technologies and help the country head towards zero-emissions.” “With engines to rebuild, faults to diagnose, and basic servicing such as Certificates of Fitness to complete, as

well as the opportunity to work on a diverse vehicle fleet, it’s an exciting career and full of variety,” says Daryn, who oversees Tranzit’s 10 workshops located throughout the North Island and one in the South Island. “From time to time, we’ve also done classic car restoration providing a useful skill set and marine engineering, working on boats’ mechanical and electrical systems.” With Tranzit having specialist diesel mechanics, panel beaters, spray painters, auto electricians and electric bus engineers, it enables the company to keep most repairs and maintenance in-house meaning that young mechanics like Joseph have opportunities to learn and grow. They can do everything from steel work fabrication to using the latest diagnostic equipment to work on the company’s growing fleet of e-buses and charging infrastructure. Many of the workshop team also hold their Class 2 and Class 4 driver’s license to assist during breakdowns. DID YOU KNOW? Tranzit has a fleet of 2000 vehicles including more than 40 electric buses operating in the North Island. This number of e-buses will more than double by 2024.

STUART RAMSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Stuart Ramson on a field trip visiting a Ugandan village for the Shot@Life global childhood immunisation programme.

Capturing the making of history in pictures Global photographer Stuart Ramson has come full circle, settling back into rural Masterton with his wife Anne and their one-year-old son Daniel, after decades of capturing the world in his iconic photographs. “I met Anne in 2011 in Norway on a job for the United Nations Foundation,” Stuart says. She was working for the Foundation, too. It’s an organisation that advances human dignity and protects the planet. Together, they visited the Arctic circle and the ‘doomsday’ vault which stores seeds from nearly one million varieties of food crops in case of a global catastrophe. This is just one of the immense number of highlights in Stuart’s photographic career which started while he was still at Mākoura College, winning an AFS scholarship to a Texas high school. He gained a high school diploma which included photojournalism, then returned to New Zealand in 1982 as a cadet photographer with the Evening Post. There were years in Australia as a news and sports photographer, specialising in cricket, followed by the early 1990s in London covering everything from the end of Margaret Thatcher’s time in office, IRA bombings, and Princess Diana’s outings and the cracks in her marriage to Prince Charles. By 1997, Stuart was in America with the Associated Press, “photographing the cream of NYC and Washington stories

including the UN General Assembly, foreign heads of state, presidents, film stars, and sports heroes.” And then the 9/11 terrorist attack happened. Stuart was able to take photos showing the Manhattan skyline forever changed but with the Statue of Liberty actually and symbolically still standing. Stuart moved from news to corporate photography covering everything from boardroom meetings to celebrities handing out mosquito nets in refugee camps in Africa. From Disney product launches, Dunkin’ Donuts and American Express brand promotions, to human rights and immunisation campaigns across Central America, Middle East, and Africa. His human rights values align with those of his partner Anne. They feel privileged to have been part of history unfolding, but they’re ready for a change of pace. Today, he and Anne are happy to live on a rural Masterton property that looks out over a green and peaceful valley, close to family. With all his equipment and resources, including a drone, Stuart’s available for real estate and farm photography, product shoots, weddings, festivals, corporate portraiture, events and more. One of his specialities has been aerial shots from helicopters. Wairarapa will be Stuart’s primary working base, but he’s also prepared to travel wider for work.

Climb & Cut Tree Services

Dingo Nick

An arborist with a difference Climb & Cut Tree Services, up and running for over two years now, has the manpower and machinery to do your big and little jobs. The Climb & Cut team of three, owned by Andy Traill, is available to remove, reduce, prune, and trim your trees. The team can also trim and shape hedges and even grind tree stumps while they’re at it. Well equipped with a truck, chipper, ropes and tackle, and multiple chainsaws, Andy and his crew are ready to go. Based in Masterton, Climb & Cut Tree Services works across the entire Wairarapa district.

MARTY (LEFT) AND NICK DENCH - LANDSCAPING RUNS IN THE FAMILY.

Landscape construction setting the scene

“Our point of difference is our ability to work in tight spots,” Andy says. He’s thinking trees overhanging houses or butting up to windows, for example. “Tricky removals are our thing.” He’s doing a lot of storm recovery work too. Andy’s learned to sequence jobs around the weather. On rainy days, he tries to work on the ground, doing clean ups or turning trees into mulch. “There’s demand for mulch all year round. I mulch for clients, and we sell any excess.”

ANDY TRAILL, OWNER OF CLIMB & CUT, IN HIS HAPPY PLACE.

But Andy’s never happier than when the weather is fine, and he can get back up a tree. “Our clients include retirement homes, schools and preschools, and places like Cobblestones in Greytown. Mainly, however, we do residential trees and hedges.” Andy was brought up in Featherston and went to Kuranui College. His wife, Selena, does the paperwork for the Climb & Cut business and they have three young children. “That was the main reason for starting Climb & Cut,” Andy says. “I have work flexibility and can be around for the kids.”

construction.

Returning to New Zealand from teaching English in Japan, Martyn was keen to be near family. He brought his amenity horticultural skills from years of working at Wellington Botanic Gardens and the Otari Native Plant Museum. Combined with his father’s turf and horticultural qualifications, minds began ticking over and ‘Dingo Nick’ – the landscaping company was formed.

So, what’s the secret to their success?

Two senior landscapers have since enthusiastically joined them, and they are supported by five apprentices. “We offer everything from lawns and driveways, to decks, retaining walls, concrete, paving, irrigation – the whole package,” says Martyn.

Starting out in tree felling as a young lad, while working with his brothers for a family friend, Andy soon went on to gain a Level 4 qualification as an arborist. Training is important to him, and he ensures his lads receive good arborist and safety instruction inhouse. Check out this small, family-run operation.

Tony Hayman is a landscaping professional with 20+ years’ experience and has an engineering background which comes in handy when structures are being constructed. Beau Richards is a builder with 20+ years’ experience and has moved into landscaping, specialising in outdoor

Martyn is quick and proud to point out Dingo Nick is a Living Wage employer “why wouldn’t you be?” Dingo Nick is also certified Site Safe and a registered member of the Master Landscapers Association. “Everyone in the team gets a real kick out of creating environments that customers enjoy. Landscaping finishes off a property. We do the hard graft and the fancy bits. For some clients it’s as simple as making their suburban section low maintenance. A lot of our work is turning new building sites into a liveable place.” Some of the higher profile work recently is the landscaping of the Arvida Retirement Village, the Emerge development in Iorns Street, Masterton, and all three stages of the Kandahar expansion. The Jennian Homes Westbush development also got the Dingo Nick finishing touch. In addition to the knowledge, Dingo Nick has four excavators, a 4-ton Bobcat, four tip trucks, a soil screen, a hydroseeder, and a wide range of building and specialty landscaping tools. What they can achieve is known as hardscape construction – which makes your gardening jobs all that bit easier.

Cycling Tom Bike Shop

The Coffee Ride

So much more than a bike store In its new Solway premises next to Harvey Norman, with more space, more stock, a café, and with new tours on offer, there’s no freewheeling, hitting the brakes, or back pedaling in Tom McCallum’s universe of bikes. It all started in 2014 when Tom went to Rathkeale College on a sports scholarship. A knee injury stopped him running and so he focused on the low impact activity of cycling. By 2015, he was part of the NZ cycling team competing in New Caledonia. “It gave me a first taste of where cycling can take you.” Between 2015 and 2017, Tom rode the National Race Series, going all over the country. A biking YouTube channel followed, accumulating a fan base of over 20,000. In 2018, Tom finished school. By 2021, he’d bought Happy Valley Cycles in Queen Street, rebranding as Cycling Tom. Offering great bike servicing options, Tom also began pushing his sales vision. “One of the advantages of being a locally owned and independent bike store is that I can offer all the different ranges of bikes and accessories.”

JONATHAN PEARCE AT WORK IN THE COFFEE RIDE.

TOM McCALLUM AT HIS NEW CYCLING TOM PREMISES IN SOLWAY.

Fuelling cyclists and families Jonathan Pearce, owner of The Coffee Ride with wife Toni McCallum, has brought together his various talents, skills, and experiences in creating this unique café. With ten years of building experience under his tool belt, Jonathan (Joffy) took on the lion’s share of the fitout for The Coffee Ride café as well as for Toni’s son Tom McCallum’s store Cycling Tom Bike Shop, inside of which the café nestles.

And now, at the advanced age of 23, “with lots of help from mum and grandad,” Tom has re-located from Queen Street to Solway. Cycling Tom’s is no longer a bike store, it’s so much more. “It’s a cycling hub.” And it’s now a destination. People can easily park here, test out the bikes around the car park, have a coffee, and leave their cars parked here for as long as they need if they’re hiring a bike and going on a tour.

Prior to those years of being on the tools, Joffy worked in hospitality for about 15 years across Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown.

That’s the next big news. Cycling Tom now hires out bikes (gravel, road, mountain, and e-bikes) and offers cycling tour packages, guided or nonguided. Cycling Tom has re-located, expanded, and diversified. With his incredible energy, ability to learn on the job, and his vision, it’s not at all surprising that Tom McCullum’s business is a finalist in the Wairarapa Business Awards: Emerging Business category.

There’s also a gap in the market down this end of town which The Coffee Ride helps fill.” For fantastic L’affare coffee and amazing hot and cold cabinet food all day long, seven days a week, pop into The Coffee Ride. Try a toasted cheese scone dripping with butter, freshly made Danish, homemade beef and caramelised onion sausage rolls, and many other delicious treats.

“I did everything from making coffee and café work to fine dining,” he says. He even did private catering for firms like Weta Workshop.

You’ll be spoilt for choice, too, for slices, brownies, and biscuits from Couplands Bakery. “We’re the only place in the lower North Island where you’ll be able to find Coupland’s products,” says Toni. “Including the world-famous lolly cake that fuels our elite cycling team,” Joffy adds.

Coming back to hospitality after building for the last decade has made a lot of sense for Joffy. “After a nasty fall and a broken pelvis, my body told me it was time for a change of pace. When Tom made the decision to relocate Cycling Tom Bike Shop to Solway and wanted to incorporate a café, it felt like the planets had aligned.

There’s parking for bikes and an outdoor area of tables, umbrellas, bean bags, and newspapers. And of course, Joffy’s Coffee’s, too.

Whether its hungry cyclists post-ride or families with young children looking for fluffies, there’s something for everyone at The Coffee Ride in the heart of the Solway estate.

Tim Mackay, who established the store in 1998 and sold it in 2020, is still there, having gone back onto the tools. Not only does the shop sell and lay carpets, vinyl, vinyl planking, commercial vinyl, laminate floors, and timber floors, it also sands and polishes timber floors, grinds and polishes concrete floors, installs ceramic tiles, and does epoxy coatings. All types of carpet fibres are available including wool, solution-dyed nylon, polyester and even triexta, which is partially made from cornstarch.

As a result, Total Care Flooring Design attracts builders wanting a single quote to cover flooring for their residential and commercial projects. A recent job, for example, was laying the flooring up at Pūkaha’s new environmental centre (Te Whare Taiao o Manukura) and marae. The store is equally attractive to rental property owners, schools, retirement villages, mums and dads who need insurance work done or who are renovating or building new, and more. Phil loves the variety of his job. “I enjoy every day here,” he says, “and no day is the same. New products come online, new jobs come in, and new challenges come up.” While Total Care Flooring Design is locally owned and run, being part of a franchise has its benefits including purchasing and price advantages that can be passed onto the customer. Ask Phil and the team at Total Care Flooring Design for a free quote.

“We are a one-stop flooring shop,” Phil says, “and that is a point of difference from all other flooring stores. We provide a comprehensive service.”

Owner, Mark Johnston has gathered a team of 28 who all have their specific roles mapped out and allocated sites to clean. He is ably assisted by Valeska Guzman Fuentes and Rose Harris who do the hiring, supervise staff, and provides on-the-job training. Valeska is also solely responsible for overseeing the Trinity Schools contract which keeps dedicated Blue Bucket staff busy. After four years in the business, Mark is enjoying using his extensive customer service background, and is continuing to lift the bar on the performance of his team through his supervisory team. The business is a well-oiled machine and prides itself on being people orientated. Mark is keen to help people learn new skills. Many of his workers are returning to employment after an absence from the workforce, others

are raising children, or maybe looking to supplement their income, while others are retired. He said the job offers a chance to hone time management skills, and to provide a top-class job to be proud of. Window cleaning has been added as a special service and is building in popularity. “Clean windows can brighten the look of a person’s day,” adds Mark. Blue Bucket has a fleet of six vehicles which can be spied all over the region. An example of the type of customers Blue Bucket cares for are premises owned by Bosch Property Management. Gary Stewart, Property Manager for Bosch Property has used Blue Bucket for years and has found Mark and his team extremely professional, reliable, and efficient, going that extra mile when any issues arise. Brightening the staffs’ time is a series of fun incentives. These include bonuses for high standards of work, the popular pizza nights, and BBQs, and the “Golden Toilet Brush” ceremony for the best job muck up. “It is presented with great hilarity and serves as a good learning curve,” smiles Mark.

Auto-Trim Wairarapa

A pattern of success, stitch by stitch A beautifully upholstered seat in a vehicle is often taken for granted, you just flop down into it, right? But if you have an eye for detail, and beauty, then Isaac Coulston’s work is noticed, and certainly admired. A self-confessed perfectionist, he loves turning his hand to the unusual and enjoys it when customers allow him to let his imagination run a bit wild. Vintage and veteran car fanatics are also welcoming him with open arms. Isaac is a talented upholsterer who has used his sewing skills in his automotive upholstery business. He is a graduate of The New Zealand Institute of Fashion Technology in Wellington, which lauds itself on not simply fostering fashion creation, but teaching students sewing skills in the traditional style. Isaac graduated from this environment, keen to establish his own business. Recognising a gap in the local market, Isaac happily took over from Price Auto-Trim in central Masterton.

His workshop sits alongside the Tranzit bus depot which has welcomed him as a business neighbour, and gone shares in the business, securing for the large bus firm, an on-hand quality repairer of its bus seats. It’s a win:win for the young businessman who has not yet reached 30 years old. Born and raised in Masterton, it was at Wairarapa College that Isaac discovered an interest in sewing and textiles. His talent was recognised by his teacher, Ruth Bucknell, and encouraged by his nana and mother. The two years training in Wellington also involved several work experience opportunities and at one stage he won a scholarship to study textile and fabrics in southern India over six weeks. It was having children that brought him back to Wairarapa. Isaac has an eightyear-old daughter and with partner, Laurie, a three-year-old daughter, and one-year-old twin girls. It’s a busy life and he enjoys the added value of being self-

employed, fitting in work with parental responsibilities. The large and airy workshop at Auto-Trim is ideal for accommodating clients’ cars and there’s a wide expansive workbench and heavy-duty sewing machines. Isaac loves motorbikes and can refurbish their seats along with any car upholstery imaginable. Convertible roofs and head linings are a specialty along with decorative inset work, and piping, to give seating a bit of pizzazz. Despite the business name, it’s not just vehicles he will upholster. Boats, bar fitouts, and plain old foam squabs can be a work of art. He enjoys the bespoke smaller furniture items too, such as footstools he had recently in the workshop incorporating a client’s tapestry. Less people have the specialist automotive and marine upholstery skills these days, so it’s expected Isaac will always be sought after. Seek him out yourself, to see what he can create.

Back in Action

Don Luciano’s baristas, Mika Benedikt, Marvin Guerrero and Ariana Wilson.

RYAN MONASTRA AT WORK, CO-OWNER OF BACK IN ACTION AND SENIOR PHYSIOTHERAPIST.

Catalyst for your new lease on life “When someone in pain comes through my door,” Ryan Monastra says, “it’s not always just a sore back or ankle coming in. There can be a range of other factors about the person that might be important. My job is to find out.” Once he’s got to the bottom of a problem, Ryan, director of Back in Action and a senior physiotherapist, can suggest changes to how someone moves, or operates a keyboard, or even lives their life - changes to improve the health of their back or their ankle. “I’ve been a practising physiotherapist for 22 years,” says Ryan. “And every day it’s deeply satisfying to ease someone’s pain, to make a real difference.” Ryan, together with his wife (and former nurse) Maryanne Monastra, have owned Back in Action for about 13 years. Based in King Street, Masterton, the Back in Action team of about 15 offers a full range of care: physiotherapy, chiropractic, and massage. There’s a synergy between these in managing pain and discomfort – they’re noninvasive, nonsurgical, hands-on techniques.

Ryan says: “No matter what your problem is, I aim to help you but also teach you something about managing your own health, so you don’t need to keep coming back.” Back in Action is a safe place for people to bring their pain. There are three ‘ducks’ that Ryan likes to line up with each of his clients: are there things the client could do in the short-term to avoid irritating an area of pain?; what could Ryan or someone else do to help the client feel better?; and what is something the client could do themselves to ingrain new and healthy patterns of movement, working, and living? “Once these ducks are in a row, people get better.” In his spare time, Ryan is mountain biking with his wife and four children (Abbey aged 16, Lucy 14, Noah 12, and Ollie 7), coaching or cheering on their football teams, and planning a walk up the Himalayas with his daughters. Ryan loves being a hands-on physio - “I’m here to get you better” - he wouldn’t have it any other way.

For the love of coffee Buy fresh, buy local, buy Gracias Coffee

“Coffee is not just a drink. It is an aroma, a moment, a memory. I love coffee and I love people. Bringing the two together is magic. It makes me happy to see you happy. The coffee is my gift to you all – from Honduras to Aotearoa.” Marvin Guerrero Coffee drinking has long been symbolised with joy, intellect, and creativity, laced with a streak of revolution. In the 18th century, European coffee houses represented a place for free, radical, and open discussion. A place where like-minds could gather and thrash out the issues of the day. In warmer climes, such as central America, it represents a place where friends gather and loiter in the sun and on sandy shores. In Masterton, Marvin Guerrero, with his Gracias Coffee, aims for the same vibrant, freethinking atmosphere in Don Luciano café. His customers are drawn in by the aroma of the freshly roasted coffee, the colourful ambience, playful music, and where people can stop a while and savour in the age-old joy of coffee drinking. “I’d like to think I’m sending them on a journey from the farmers to the brokers, coffee roasters, to the baristas and to you.” Marvin sources his coffee beans from Honduras, his homeland. Some also come from Guatemala and Colombia. They are ground in the elegant black and gold Probat coffee roaster featured in the café. It’s a marvel of German engineering which he imported. It’s worth a look. For the connoisseur there’s ‘Single Origin’ made from Colombian beans – Dora Muńoz and Santa Rosa de Copan.

“I’m making up fine blends in a variety of flavours. ‘Gracias’ is a salute to my wonderful life, ‘The Don’ is a nod to my grandfather, and ‘Mama Dora’ is named after my mother, Theodora.” Mama Dora is a blend. Marvin’s mother died of breast cancer in 2006. He donates 50 cents per kilo of coffee to the Cancer Society. “I thrive on seeing people come into the café to enjoy my coffee and each other. It is a celebration of life and I love the buzz, the laughter, and positive vibes of the place. The café’s namesake, Don Luciano, was Marvin’s grandfather. He was a farmer who grew coffee in La Esperanza, in the Intibucá region of Honduras. His benevolent gaze stares from a painting which hangs in the café. As a child, Marvin would make his grandfather a coffee. “The beans were ground by hand into a cloth and hot water poured through. Doing it three times got you a good brew and just warm, not too hot,” recalls Marvin. The smell of this freshly brewed coffee stayed with him as he grew, which he had to do quickly, as he lost his father when just six years old. His mother, a teacher, worked three jobs to raise her family of four children. Don Luciano became an important father figure for the young Marvin. He now lives on through the passion and care for coffee in Masterton.

MAINFREIGHT MASTERTON’S DEPOT.

Together, they’re a force to be reckoned with, aiming to be the end-to-end freighter of choice locally for wineries, timber companies, food suppliers, and more.

Green & Clean Wairarapa

Cable Guy Wairarapa

NICK GREEKS.

ALEX NYBOER (LEFT) AND SEAN.

For the love of living on a tidy edge

Getting the best reception from those in the know

Nick Greeks loves the wide-open spaces, a neat sweep of lawn, beautiful gardens, trimmed edges, and bushes. “I’m told I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and I do like gardens to look cared for, neat and tidy,” he adds. Nick’s straight eye turns hedges and lawn and garden edging into works of art.

In the words of Bob Dylan – The Times they are a-Changin’. That was almost 60 years ago which coincidently was around the same time television entered the homes of many New Zealanders.

“If clients set me free, I can craft bushes into interesting shapes too.” A beautifully mown lawn also gets him excited. “Stripes are good.”

around him, along with his robust trusty Toyota truck with a hoist. Gardening and landscaping have always been an interest and when he began his business, Nick started with looking after a homestay grounds, out of Carterton. He then took on caring for a private cemetery and word of mouth and a Facebook page has his skills being appreciated in Wairarapa. He’s looking forward to the summer work after a wet winter. “The rain has made everything grow so healthily, so gardens are looking beautiful”, especially after Nick has been there.

Perfectionism is quite a handy trait for Nick’s business, Green & Clean Wairarapa, which he established in August 2022. He was looking for a change in direction, and work, that would fit in with his children’s needs. He has a son, 6, and daughter, 4, and wanted to be as much part of their life as possible. The flexibility of days and hours of gardening for clients, suits perfectly. Nick hails from the Hawke’s Bay and is now based in Carterton with his children.

So, if you’ve a wobbly hedge, a driveway you can’t get down for the overgrowth, or simply would like help keeping the lawns under control, get in touch with Nick – he’s helping Wairarapa stay green and clean.

He’s a qualified automotive technician from EIT in Napier and it is helpful having mechanical skills for the raft of gardening equipment he’s gathered

Fast forward decades and the Cable Guy brothers, Sean and Alex Nyboer are acutely aware of the changing times. They are constantly upskilling and keeping abreast of developments with television reception and WiFi coverage. When you are upgrading your internet WiFi coverage, purchasing a new television, or your present one doesn’t work, calling Cable Guy is the only way to go. TV wall mounting and new TV outlets are also a big part of what the guys do. Sean Nyboer is the Company Director and has been in the business for 17 years – 11 of those when it was known as Aerials Are Us. He has been joined by brother, Alex, in recent years and their mother, Caroline, complements the service by running all the administration. “We’re proudly a familyowned business.” They run the business from an office on the family lifestyle

block in Upper Plain Road, Masterton. A tight-knit family, Caroline and builder husband, Eric, left Wairarapa when their sons were just seven and two years old to work in a missionary school in Senegal, West Africa. They stayed for eight years before returning home. On any day, The Cable Guy jobs can include installing TV antennae and satellite dishes on new builds and existing homes. Increasingly popular are Starlink kits which get internet access direct from satellites. A great solution for rural customers. They can be purchased direct from Starlink.com and some people attempt to install the dishes themselves. Sean warns, installation and positioning are crucial to ensure the money invested results in a quality service. “You really need to call us in,” he adds. Another request to people is to call Cable Guy to install cabling for televisions and internet BEFORE the gib board goes on the walls of new builds and renovations. “Often, we’ll get the call saying they are all finished and ready for us, when the walls are closed in. It’s not an ideal situation.”

Jarden

Strong investment decisions built on trust When Ron Jarden started his company in the fitting room of a Wellington menswear store in 1961, he didn’t expect it to become New Zealand’s leading investment and advisory group. Nor did he expect it to have offices all over New Zealand, including Masterton. Led by Wealth Management Adviser, Bryan Shepherd, Jarden Masterton helps local clients with investment and succession planning. With more than 30 years of experience, Bryan’s knowledge is vast, and up to date. He enjoys meeting clients at Jarden’s office located in the Bayleys building at 186 Chapel Street, Masterton. He is also happy to meet at your home, farm, or business base. Bryan’s experience and knowledge is backed by Jarden’s research team of economists and analysts who produce regular reports for advisers and clients. Jarden entitled its August 2023 report, Cross Currents, to reflect the current economic/investment environment. “Progress has been made in the battle to tame inflation. Central banks have increased policy interest rates to, or close to, peak levels but are unlikely to start reducing interest rates soon. In the meantime, economies are experiencing slower growth but have so far evaded a recession. While we are not out of the woods yet, the chance of a recession in New Zealand is lessening,” the report says. “Equity markets have enjoyed this improved economic environment, in particular the US market, which has been buoyed by a handful of mega-cap technology companies.” The report also delves into climate change; New Zealand housing issues; Auckland Council’s decision to partially sell its investment in Auckland Airport; the virtues of bank term deposits versus fixed interest, and it takes a general

BRYAN SHEPHERD.

look at the health of the NZ dollar. It’s the type of report, investors receive regularly when being a Jarden investor. Describing the financial situation as forever changing, Bryan stresses the importance of having a wealth advisor by your side to clearly steer you through financial currents and change. Jarden also provides its clients with research on events that may impact the economy and markets. In September 2023 they analysed the Pre-Election Economic and Fiscal Update (PREFU). A summary was presented to investors, which stated: • The Treasury’s Pre-Election Economic and Fiscal Update shows a gradual improvement in the Government fiscal position, with a return to a surplus in 2026/27. • However, the outlook is weaker than the Treasury projected in the May Budget Economic and Fiscal Outlook. This is largely due to lower-than-expected company tax revenues and higher-than-expected core expenses. • Because of a weaker fiscal outlook, the NZ Debt Management Office projects an extra $9 billion of Government Bonds will need to be issued over the next four years,

with total issuance over the period estimated at $129 billion. • A weaker fiscal outlook is projected despite moderately stronger expected economic growth resulting from higher net migration. The Treasury’s assumption of higher net migration also influenced its higher forecasts for both inflation and interest rates. • In the context of New Zealand’s deteriorating net external debt position, downgrades to the Government’s fiscal position presents near and longer-term vulnerabilities, which will need to be addressed by future Governments. Bryan says “We work with clients to provide them with tailored investment portfolios that suit their circumstances. When client’s investment objectives or personal circumstances change, we work with them to review and manage their portfolios accordingly to ensure their financial goals are met.” It’s a vital service when you are investing. Ziggys Masterton Glass Co.

Sammo’s Tree Services

THE ZIGGYS TEAM. (JO-ANN STONELEY HAS SINCE RETIRED).

A classy leader in glass Ziggys has been the name synonymous with glass in Wairarapa for the past 34 years. Some years ago, Novus Automotive Glass and more recently, Ewen Glass, have been added, and Ziggys is now undeniably the true heavyweight in the local glass business. It still operates out of the expanded and instantly recognisable building on the corner of Masterton’s Lincoln Road and Bentley Street. Simon O’Donoghue, (aka Ziggy) established his business in 1989 out of a pale blue Bedford van. These days he’s supported by a staff of 15, along with Gareth Hamill, brought on as General Manager in early 2022. Gareth has built a career in the glass industry and in addition to operating the Ziggy’s business, is also a director of the Glass and Glazing Institute of New Zealand (Glazing Apprentice School) to help ensure the glazing trade has a strong pipeline of capability for the next generation. Ziggys has been renowned for its strong retail focus, through which individual customers are well-served. It sits alongside its business partnerships in the new build and renovation markets. Large national companies, local construction companies, and bespoke building and joinery enterprises are all customers of Ziggys. Simon and Gareth work alongside each other, with complementary personalities and skill sets. Gareth focuses on the day-to-day operation of the business, whilst Simon now has time and capacity to explore wider business and personal initiatives including president of

Wairarapa Underwater Club. “The basis of our success has been our staff,” says Simon. He’s proud of the great team environment, and the way staff interact with customers, who are qualified industry experts.” Phil Jamieson manages Ziggys front of house. He’s the man to talk to about all glass requirements. Because of his trade experience and qualifications, he can comfortably move from the showroom talk, to popping out the back and cutting the glass himself. Phil has been with Ziggys since 1997. Corey Miller manages the Novus automotive division. He’s been with Ziggys for over 20 years and has strong community connections through his sporting endeavours. Travis O’Donoghue, Simon’s son, works as 2IC to Corey, and is also trade qualified. Ziggys can now offer a broader value service to customers because of the recent business integration. “We’re proud of the fact we can continue to meet the requirements of a diverse range of customers,” says Gareth. Ziggys now stretches along an entire block, including a modern and newly roofed building for the Novus automotive glass aspect of the business, an adjoining car park, and a huge area for storing a multitude of glass products, as well as glass cutting and retro¬fitting operations.

Madison Lincoln Hair + Nails

JORDON WATENE, OWNER OF MADISON LINCOLN HAIR & NAILS, AT WORK.

Opening the door to feeling great Six years after opening the door to his hair salon in Upper Plain Road, owner Jordon Watene has moved Madison Lincoln Hair & Nails to bigger premises. It’s now situated in Ngaumutawa Road’s brand spanking new Poplars Business Park. Jordon and his wife Steph say that Madison Lincoln (named after their children) is “in the business of making people look and feel great”. Hair options include cuts, colouring, styling, extensions, and treatments. For Jordon, hair is important but more critical is the ability to “relate to people and create an in-studio environment where both clients and staff feel good.” Clients having their hair done are pampered, and Lincoln Lounge Nails is the perfect addition to the Madison hair experience. Steph, the mistress of nails, specialises in soft gel extensions and gel polish manicures. With your hair and nails both transformed, you’ll step out of Madison Lincoln feeling renewed. Having outgrown the Upper Plain Road premises, Madison Lincoln now has the space for all nine stylists and a nail

technician to operate at the same time, as well as room for future additional team members. Situated near LW & Co Building Company, Sugar Cafe and Festival Hire, Madison Lincoln is in the perfect place to meet the needs of its highly loyal and ever-growing clientele. The parking is great too. Jordon has come a long way since starting out in hairdressing aged just 17, doing work experience one day a week at Masterton’s (then) Maggie B’s while still at school. “School didn’t really work for me,” Jordon says with his trademark smile. “I went there to eat lunch and play rugby.” After moving from school to an apprenticeship at Maggie B’s, Jordon stayed for eleven years. In 2017 he went out on his own, choosing the Upper Plain premises after noticing the empty shop while visiting his grandmother who lives just around the corner. Just as relationships with staff and clients at Madison Lincoln are important to Jordon, so too is family. His roots go deep into Ngāti Kahungunu (Hastings) and his children are the lights of his life.

 In the heart of Wairarapa, where the land meets the sky and dreams take shape, there’s a saying that resonates deeply with the spirit of A1homes Wairarapa: “He aha te mea nui o te ao, he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.” Roughly translated, it means, “What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.” For Paul Southey and his dedicated team at A1homes in Wairarapa, this proverb is not just a phrase; it’s the very essence of their work. “I could not have operated my business without the wonderful diverse team, and we collaborate with the people using our service. It’s simple, really. It’s all about the people.” In 2004, Paul and his wife, Jeanette, laid the foundation for the A1homes Wairarapa branch. Their journey has been nothing short of a local success story. Today, Paul has entrusted the general management to Tim Fenwick, a leader committed to carrying forward this legacy. Tim, who joined A1homes as the Operations Manager six years ago, returned to his hometown of Greytown after 17 years overseas. But don’t mistake this transition for retirement; Paul is redirecting his energy into mentoring and furthering his business studies. Beyond the realm of home construction, Paul also takes the helm of the Wairarapa Māori Business Network, where he passionately encourages Māori and Pasifika individuals to explore the world of entrepreneurship. He shares his wisdom with students, emphasizing the value of learning trades and looking towards the future.

Tim Fenwick, along with his wife Erin and their two sons, chose Wairarapa as their haven. A Greytown native, Tim honed his skills as a carpenter with Holmes Construction before embarking on a journey overseas in 1999. Upon returning from Melbourne, he was elated to join the A1homes family. With a decade of corporate experience under his belt, Tim eagerly embraced his return to the construction industry. He firmly believes that open communication and empathy are the cornerstones of a thriving business. “Every person has different wants, needs, budgets, and life stages. It’s crucial that we listen to this,” Tim asserts. Tim’s enthusiasm for his new role at the helm of A1homes is palpable. Business acumen runs in his blood; his family’s entrepreneurial legacy, anchored by the name Roger Fenwick, remains etched in the memories of Greytown and Featherston residents. Standing alongside Paul and Tim is Matt Williams, a testament to the mentoring culture fostered at A1homes. “I was drawn to A1homes because of the close-knit team, the familyoriented focus, and the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skill set,” says Matt. Hailing from Dannevirke, Matt and his wife, Ashleigh, are busy transforming a house in Masterton. In the world of A1homes Wairarapa, it truly is all about the people. Building dreams, forging connections, and strengthening communities—these are the pillars upon which A1homes Wairarapa proudly stands.

The Straight Flush Wairarapa team (from le): Tim, Warihi, Jeremy, Coen, and Ma.

traight Flush Plumbing is in full flush with businesses now wellestablished in Wellington, New Plymouth, and Wairarapa. Owned by Jeremy and Ngaire Mansfield, the Straight Flush group concentrates on the maintenance and servicing of your wastewater systems, with the aim of keeping everything flowing. Wairarapa’s Straight Flush is managed by Jeremy, who has four local plumbers on the tools. “We’re available for plumbing jobs, drain laying and unblocking, and sepc tank servicing, removals and emptying,” Jeremy says. The team does hot water heat pumps for domesc hot water, underfloor heang, and radiator systems. It can also help with LPG gas fing. Because the team focuses on maintenance, and doesn’t chase commercial jobs or new builds, it’s not ed up on big projects when customers need them. Jeremy works with property managers, rental trusts, facilies managers, and larger corporates, as well as everyday homeowners.

Straight Flush has HR and health and safety systems in place to sasfy even government clients. Karishma Singh runs the service delivery team across the Straight Flush group, keeping the accounts, scheduling, administraon, HR and health and safety all in order. And any jobs Straight Flush takes on, “we won’t sub-contract any of it out.” This is possible because of the team’s broad range of skills but also because it has all the gear: CCTV, drain jeer, vacuum loader, digger, a pper truck … you name it. Straight Flush supports work experience and apprenceships, helping to foster future plumbers. It also provides team members with career paths, with one of its plumbers going on to establish and manage the New Plymouth branch. Behind the scenes of Straight Flush, Ngaire and Jeremy have three children, one of whom has ausm. “It gives you a different outlook on what’s important in life and what success looks like,” Jeremy says. For Straight Flush, success is about building a business that can foster its staff and serve its customers well.

Window tinting and personalised clothing Did you know that tinting your vehicle’s windows cuts out 99% UV rays and can cool the interior of up to 30%? It could be a good move for the summer. Increasing numbers of motorists are looking to Shaun Pollard and his Kooltintz service to reduce the glare through their windows. Farmers are loving it on their tractors, as are long distance truck drivers for reducing that eye straining glare. Then there’s the privacy factor which many people like. But it’s not only vehicles which Shaun’s tinting service is attracting. Businesses and homeowners are also asking for their windows to be tinted. It makes so much difference than squinting into the harsh sunshine and again it provides privacy. Shaun has been caring for vehicles for many years. He and wife Lisa previously owned Autogroom in Masterton and have since sold on. “A clean vehicle is not only nice to have but vital if it’s emblazoned with your business name and it’s a major tool of your trade.”

Shaun still loves vehicles and was keen to try new business ventures. The pair are now concentrating on the window tinting business and a new direction of emblazoning clothing with specialised insignia. LS Streetwear (Lisa and Shaun’s initials) was established early 2022 and demand for the service is phenomenal. “You think it, we’ll print it,” is Shaun’s famous motto. Sports clubs such as the Carterton Rugby Club and Wairarapa Bush have used Shaun’s clothing printing for their gear. So has Keenan Forestry for the workers’ shirts. Wairarapa Wahine Toa – our local women’s rugby team also tracked down Shaun at his Carterton workshop. He is well set up with a design programme on his computer, printer plus a clothing press. A range of clothing is also available. “We can create anything really. Just think up a design and we’ll collaborate with you to add it to clothing.”

WAY MORE THAN JUST A COPY SHOP! I

t’s music to Peter Watson’s ears, when he gets asked “do you print signage?”, “do you have design capabilities?”, “is packaging your thing?”, “what about producing my book?”… “We do all of these and so much more,” says Peter who, over the past 23 years has been an employee, manager, and now owner of Printcraft – the colourful establishment on the opposite corner to Moore Wilson’s on Queen Street. Printcraft was founded back in the 1930s as a conventional print and finishing company, what we would now refer to as a ‘copy shop’. Since the legendary Lance Johnson took it over in the 1980s, it has become an iconic part of the Wairarapa business scene. Printcraft has since evolved into a business that reaches far beyond a ‘copy shop’ market for both local and national clients alike. Their expertise covers all areas for businesses wanting any form of marketing, design, signage, labels, packaging - the list goes on. Pete invites and welcomes anyone to come along to Printcraft and have a chat.

When Pete was purchasing the business from Lance, the sustainable tide had already turned in the print industry, calling for more climate-friendly practices, moving away from inks with high lead content, and from plastic to

cardboard and other paper products. “The print industry is right up there as a business leader, reducing its carbon footprint by 97% over the last 20 years,” and this is something Pete is extremely proud to be a part of. He continually waves the flag for the print industry he loves working within. Pete is also equally proud of his team. A team that often refers to themselves as a wider family – an indication of a team guided by a great leader. Their trade skills are as diverse as the services offered at Printcraft. Amongst them are: colour specialists, art specialists, designers, digital print experts, offset print operators, finishing experts, signage producers – also including design, production and installation – for vehicles, buildings and so much more. So go figure, Printcraft – way more than a copy shop. Pete’s engaging character and laugh out loud mannerisms are well known to customers and staff alike. Go in and see for yourself.

Robinson Electrical

Gleniti Romneys

COLIN ROBINSON.

Electrical experience where it matters Electrician, Colin Robinson proudly points out that he’s seen a lot in the four decades he’s been working as an electrician. From simple connections of water cylinders, to plug units, and lighting installations in the early days, he now sees increasing requests for modern innovations such as EV chargers in home garages for clients’ electric vehicles. “It was once the stuff of science fiction,” he laughs, but he’s been around long enough in the industry to see it happen. What’s also happened for Colin, is that after working for several electrical companies within Wairarapa, at the tender age of 63, he’s decided to go out on his own and has established Robinson Electrical. “It’s a huge step to run your own business and several times when I have considered it, there’s been things to consider, not least a family of three sons to feed.” Now, all grown up, they are the ones referring business to their dad. Colin has such a sound reputation in Wairarapa, that jobs have appeared via word of mouth. That’s only after eight weeks in business when Men@Work went to print in November 2023.

Colin was raised in Carterton, his parents owning a dairy and later the pet shop. When he left Kuranui College, he initially trained as an auto electrician but later discovered general electrical work more suited him. After qualifying, he worked for several firms in Masterton and Greytown until the hankering to be his boss got the better of him. He has the keen support of his wife, Donna. Both are also keen fishermen, and they love nothing more than getting out on their boat, either off the Wairarapa coast or in Coromandel. Colin has been a keen hunter but these days he’s just as happy to take some of his 11 grandchildren off into the bush – often the Haurangi Ranges, to take in nature. From the electrical point of view, Colin loves wiring new-builds which are streamlined without the final wall boarding. “It gets a lot more physical when you must start climbing in roof spaces and under buildings, he says recalling many experiences. With so many new builds in Wairarapa, there is little doubt he’ll be in demand. So, if it’s electrical experience you’re looking for, Colin is the man.

FATHER AND SON, DAVID AND BILL HUME IN THE YARD AT GLENITI, SOUTH WAIRARAPA.

Six generations breeding prime sheep Gleniti Romneys have always been robust easy-care sheep. Their high fertility, high growth and survival rates, and very good style medium wool are a proud standard. Gleniti has 1,700 stud ewes and it docks between 150 and 165 percent of these at Pirinoa. It sells around 300 rams a year.

The group has been instrumental in improving the production of the breed. They’ve benefitted from using recording systems and have had advice from the best animal geneticists including Prof Al Rae, Prof Dorian Garrick, and Dr Mark Young.

The Hume family in Pirinoa goes back to the 1850s when David Hume’s greatgreat-grandfather Peter, bought the land on which Gleniti still farms. The story goes that he was a horse trader between Tasmania and Wellington. After a good sale, he bought the land in Wairarapa and settled down.

After 50 years of careful recording, there is high accuracy in the breeding values generated. Gleniti’s high stocking rate puts enough pressure on its sheep to identify those that do not thrive. Mothering ability is particularly important. “Any ewe which doesn’t stand with her lambs as we tag them, is culled.”

“How lucky are we that he chose this area,” says David, who loves life on the land. He learned his farming skills from his father Bill, who’s still involved at age 85. David is now sharing the workload and handing on his skills to son Jayden (aged 20) - the sixth generation of Humes on the farm.

This practice has resulted in the sheep having a quieter temperament. “These breeding values are the basis of the index we’ve used for our selection. We can identify sheep with a balance of production traits. That gives the best return to those using our rams,” says David.

Bill learned about sheep from legendary romney breeder and neighbour, the late Holmes Warren. Holmes, Bill, and nine other like-minded Wairarapa breeders formed the Wairarapa Romney Improvement Group in 1969.

“In recent years, this balance of fertility, survival, growth rate and wool weight has brought the Gleniti flock close to optimum levels.” Well done, Hume family.

Tuanui Membrane & Roofing Maintenance Ltd

SOME OF THE TUANUI MEMBRANE & ROOFING TEAM HARD AT WORK.

Raising the roof Chris Casha, now in his third year as the owner of Tuanui Membrane & Roofing Maintenance Limited, has a long list of roofing services to offer Wairarapa, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, and Manawatu districts. And he loves all the services he provides.

Angela teaches at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa, and they are happily based in Masterton. Their wedding was held at Pāpāwai marae, and the reception was at Masterton’s Town Hall. That’s doing things properly. Doing things properly turns out to be a trait of Chris’s. “He’s a perfectionist,” Angela says. “He treats every roofing job as if he’s working on his own home.”

Re-roofing or installing new roofs is a fundamental service. “Many people are no longer keen on the maintenance that goes along with tiled roofs,” Chris says. “We can replace tiles with iron or replace old iron with new.” The word ‘tuanui’ is Māori for roof, which makes sense. The Tuanui team, composed of Chris and three staff, also paint roofs as well as water-blasting them to get rid of dirt, mould, and moss. Cleaning, maintaining, and replacing gutters and spouting are also services tucked away in Tuanui’s kete. Chris’s specialty, however, is all about membrane: maintaining, replacing, or even laying new. Membrane refers to bitumen, rubber, and TPO roofs, mainly

Mobility Wairarapa

Pullman Builders Ltd

STEVE TAYLOR.

KEITH & KUSHLA PULLMAN AND FAMILY.

Marvellous mobility aids ensure independence

All your building needs catered for

There’s a certain irony that a motorbike sidecar racing champion owns and operates a mobility service, Mobility Wairarapa. There’s also a yawning gap between the thrilling and hair-raising breakneck speed of sidecar racing, to the mobility scooters which max out at 15 kms/hr. Steve (Spike) Taylor looks quite at home though, amongst the mobility scooters, walking frames, walking sticks, shower stools and health aids in his showroom at his Masterton store in Renall Street. There are also wheelchairs, crutches, reaches, toilet seat raisers, jar openers, cushions, lumbar rolls, commodes, and urinals. Everything to make life a little more comfortable. Steve is good at selling the mobility scooters too, being New Zealand’s top seller for the Goldfern range in 2021. He’s also introduced the Heartway brand of scooters, a more lightweight model than some of its counterparts. A fitter and turner by trade, Steve’s skills translate beautifully to repairing and maintaining the scooters, which help multitudes of residents, with mobility problems, get out into the community. Steve’s sales and service centre has a busy backroom/workshop.

How much will this project cost? Can I do this job myself without Council consent? My windows/ doors/cupboard won’t close properly – what can I do?  I wish this pantry worked better.  How can we get some privacy in the backyard? These are some of the many questions Keith Pullman gets asked in the course of his work as a licensed builder. He established his own company almost two years ago and with his wife, Kushla taking on the administration. They make a great team.

With mobility scooters, batteries failing is the common issue, so are flat tyres and there’s rear axles breaking or bearings needing replacing. Steve is used to being in the news. He’s the winner of four New Zealand Motorcycle Sidecar Championship on his 1000cc Suzuki. Steve’s son, Issac is a “natural” according to his father, having grown up around the sport. Issac finished 4th in the National Sidecar Championships last season. Born in Blenheim, Steve came to Wairarapa as a 12-year-old. He gained his trade at the Woburn railway workshops – “a great place to learn everything.” He then spent 12 years at Hansells in the engineering section and took time out to help raise children. Over a decade ago, when working in a motorcycle shop, he met the owner of the Mobility Centre business. She was wanting to sell, and Steve happily took over. When not found ‘out the back’ fixing things, and not on his motorbike, Steve can also be spied at Henley Lake where he races radio-controlled boats. His constant companion, Shay, a friendly Swiss Shepherd, will also be nearby. She welcomes customers to the Mobility Centre.

Keith had contracted to many building companies over the years and comes with a wealth of building trade experience. With five children between them, Keith and Kushla bit the bullet and decided to grasp the long-held dream. “It was nerve wracking to launch out on my own but it’s the best thing ever.” Keith says he’s increasingly busy as Pullman Builders gets established and he’s taken on an apprentice, his brother Greg, who’s now entering his third year of his apprenticeship. Along with alterations and new builds we offer a wide range of services, one example of the diverse jobs the

brothers tackled was to create a pantry from an existing small room. “It turned out well, a happy customer, and fun job. It was interesting to design together. The fridge had to open 180 degrees for cleaning and appliances such as microwave, toaster, deep frier, crockpot all had to fit on the shelves. It ended up having a nice feeling about the space when walking in.” The story behind the life-changing decision for the Pullmans was a house fire which saw Keith and Kushla and their children fine, but they lost much in the blaze including two family pets. “When something like that happens, it makes you re-assess life and check what is really important,” says Keith. “With Kushla and the kids excited about me working for myself, I just had to do it.” Pullman Builders has a passion for family and community. “We have done the maths, crunched the numbers and now we are super excited to offer a 5% discount to community agencies in the Wairarapa.” We are also installing equipment for a new dog park near Henley Lake. Pullman Builders is donating time and materials. All part of being a local business.

Tiles – adding a touch of elegance

Under the creative eye of founder Elton Gregory, Gregory Studio has been developing memorable print design, and search-friendly websites since 2010. He has the uncanny knack of getting your name and business right up there when you Google search with his proven method of website building. “I have seen so many people not happy in their present work and with a burning passion to give an idea a go or expand what they’ve already started. I provide the tools in the marketplace to make the dream come true,” says Elton. He walks his talk, having left a comfortable publishing job to create Gregory Studio. Fourteen years later, he’s never looked back.

ELTON GREGORY.

“There’s so many creative and enthusiastic people out there just needing a helping hand. I love offering them that help.”

T

iles add a touch of pizazz to a bathroom, kitchen, pao, entranceway, workplace - in fact, anywhere you’d like a bit of decoraon, statement, or efficient cleaning surface! Decorave les hark back to Roman mes and today Bailey Thomas Allsworth is carrying on this ancient tradion with his own business, BT Tiling. Bailey got into ling during work experience while at college. “I just loved the look of les and how they can completely change a room – giving it a blast and a touch of class. They are an excellent product too, from a praccal point of view, and so easy to keep clean.” Bailey was just 21 when he set up his business four years ago and gets called on for all manner of ling jobs, enjoying that each one is unique. His eye for creang something a bit different is being passed from client to client. “People are geng increasingly daring and invenve. I love clients who put their faith in me and say, “just do something creave and eye catching.” That’s a great challenge.”

Elton cut his teeth in the creative sphere, spending eight years at Learning Media plus five years working in signwriting. He has a great understanding of the technicalities of signwriting and the resulting signage. Now working in tandem with many local sign businesses; he creates designs for tourism products; designs books for aspiring authors, and when it comes to web design – he’s a star! “All my website builds are responsive which means they adapt to any screen environment, and they also come with simple easy-to-use content management systems, if required. All designs are original and non-templated, meaning that your website is a one-off and unique and not from a cookiecutter website programme.” Ask Elton about the Pageless Websites too - a single-page website structure that has all the information on one page making it easy to view and affordable, especially attractive to those new and emerging businesses. Sitting down with you, Elton will talk about the business you’re running, clients you want to attract, and in

how many formats. This includes purely a website or also a business card design, social media outlets, and maybe signage, if you have premises or require vehicle sign writing. It’s a total marketing package he can offer, and he’ll get them all linking. Logos are also something he’s good at. Many of the most recognisable ones around Wairarapa, may be the genius of Elton. He’s a great one-stop design shop. Call in to his Greytown studio and get him to show you some of his work. You’ll be impressed.

A current trend is black or dark grey groung which makes les pop from the walls – visually speaking. ‘Rough groung’ is also gaining popularity. That’s where the groung is le to look raw, dripping, and industrial looking. Extra large metre square les are also being used with dramac effect. His natural creave talent he guesses comes from his family of barbers. Father Tony has ‘Tonz Barber Shop’ in Masterton, his uncle and grandfather cut hair at Kuripuni. Bailey has enjoyed breaking the mould. And yes, ling in barber shops is a great way to keep a premises look stylish and clean. Keep an eye out for his work. You’ll be impressed.

Bay Irrigation

DAVID INSTALLING A STOCK WATER SUPPLY.

Water, water, just not everywhere! Dave Crawford is in his element. He’s working in the farming industry he’s always enjoyed and is construcng intelligent and expansive irrigaon systems for Wairarapa farmers wanng to manage their land to its opmum best. One of three directors in the Hasngs-based company, Dave is also the Sales and Projects Manager. One of the key equipment pieces, Bay Irrigaon promotes, is the mobile Zimmac variable rate irrigaon pivot system - a highly lauded environmental system which sustainably sprays water and nutrients exactly where needed. The Zimmac technology is so advanced that each sprinkler on the pivots can be controlled individually, and wirelessly, ensuring water is only applied where it is needed, and most importantly, only in quanes needed.

Dave says deep groundwater is a valuable resource which needs to be carefully managed. While Bay Irrigaon’s head office is in Hasngs, Dave and colleague, Ian (Mitch) Mitchelmore provide a localised service to Wairarapa farmers based out of their Tauherenikau workshop. Mitch is a fier/welder by trade and joined up with Dave two years ago. He comes from a maintenance background, his last role being Breadcra Wairarapa’s Maintenance Manager for 16 years. Dave says Mitch’s “can do” atude comes in very handy when out on the land. The pair have formed relaonships with farmers throughout New Zealand and with irrigaon machinery suppliers in several countries. They are thrilled the Zimmac Pivot irrigators have been embraced by Wairarapa farmers.

To make this innovaon even more special, this system was invented in New Zealand.

Dave loves his role working alongside the farmers to get the best outcome for their property.

“Long gone are the days of wholesale spraying,” says Dave. “While the weer than normal winter seems like there is water everywhere, predicons are there’s a dry summer ahead.”

“The absolute best day at work is when the water is turned on. Carefully planned and managed irrigaon can provide a 30% increase in output from a farm.”

Tired of waiting for a plumber? Wayne Knight, or Wayno, to friends and colleagues has established a reliable and trusted plumbing service in Wairarapa over the past two years which sees him attracting repeat and loyal clients. Wayno is a certified plumber who has worked initially in the Waikato, then in Australia in recent years and now based in Masterton. His parents hailed from Wairarapa although he grew up in the Franklin region. He has been amazed how easy it has been to gather a sound local client base just from being available, prompt, and able to fix and build most things plumbing-related. Popular is his drain cleaning service with the CCTV camera. “The camera can pinpoint a problem clearly and easily and will often mean a problem is fixed easily before it becomes major.” Shower replacements have also been a regular job. “People are tending to remain in their homes and upgrade existing.” This includes updating hot water cylinders and installing UV filters in the kitchen to ensure quality and safe drinking water. That’s become a regular job for Wayno.

“It costs $350 to install a carbon filter in the kitchen which results in beautiful drinking water. With increasing reports around the country about poisoning from drinking water, it really is a nobrainer, not to have one.” He’d also like to see people erecting more solar panels. He has done a lot of this work in Australia and says the saving in electricity bills long-term makes for an attractive option. Wayno is highly experienced, and his work is diverse – “I could be on a roof, under a house, or with my head down a pipe, so if you want a plumber quick, call or text me, we answer our calls and will endeavour to get to you promptly.

HaglundChilds

Dish Café & Catering

NATHAN HAGLUND (LEFT) AND DAN CHILDS.

NEW CHEF, LIONAL AND DISH OWNER, MANNY DE SILVA.

Helping clients create strong economic structure

Neighbourhood café with international flavour

If you want more me, more money, and confidence in your business, farm, and LIFE – then HaglundChilds is the accounng and advisory firm you need to visit.

Manny de Silva’s café in Lansdowne is the go-to place in Masterton when you want a good coffee, hearty meal, or a catch up with friends or family. The easy parking and ‘out-of-busy-town’ feel attracts many. Manny and his team are seeing fresh faces daily from all around Wairarapa.

Not only do they offer great cups of coffee, but their colourful, congenial offices in Kuripuni, Masterton and the team of experienced accountants make for a great visit. Although they have been working together for a while, on 1st April this year, Dan Childs teamed up with Nathan Haglund as partners in the firm. It’s a dream team augmented by their colleagues, accountants Abby Ewen, Kate Canda, Patricia Dabu, Djannes Maglaque and assistant accountant Chrisne Dawang. Nathan’s lineage goes way back in Wairarapa with a strong family history of self-employed businesses. In recent memory, people will remember his pharmacist father, Heaton Haglund. Nathan’s wife, Nicola, is a veterinarian and co-owns The Vet Clinic in Masterton. He menons this to portray the length and breadth of his community knowledge. He’s been a partner in two other local accounng firms but hankered to have his own business, taking the leap in September 2020 to create Haglund Consulng. Dan was raised in Carterton and can also relate to a strong business family, his grandfather Brian Childs starng the business, C&F Industries. Dan’s father followed suit, a self-employed builder operang Childs Construcon. Dan jumped at the chance of working with Nathan upon returning from Wellington. The pair are a great combinaon. “I move at a youthful, fresh frenec pace, oen with ideas pouring out of me. Nathan will be more measured and reflecve, basing his thoughts on experience. Between us we’ll produce great soluons and ideas for our clients.

At the end of the day, we think similarly,” muses Dan.’ Both men are aware of the tough economic mes facing clients – either down on the farm, in a sole trading situaon, or in medium and larger businesses. “The ‘slow down’ of life forced on us by Covid allowed many to ulise that me to take stock, re-structure, and contemplate how they wanted to move forward,” says Nathan. “If people haven’t done this, they need their financial advisors/accountants more than ever, to assess life as the good mes come again.” Here’s why you need an accountant/ financial advisor: Quarterly Consultaons mulplies success: Businesses that engage with their accountant/advisor every quarter are 2.5 mes more likely to achieve sustained growth and financial stability. Time Management = Profitability: Business owners who delegate financial tasks to experts save an average of 15 hours per month. This allows them to focus on income-generang acvies Planning Pays Off: Business owners who receive strategic financial planning from advisors experience a 30% increase in long-term profitability compared to those who don’t. Navigang Economic Challenges: During uncertain mes like the recent pandemic, businesses guided by advisors were 3 mes more likely to adapt successfully and explore new growth avenues.

Manny loves his regular customers who come every day, sometimes more than once, and feel comfortable within, as if Dish were their ‘other’ home away. “Some call in as part of their routine, others sometimes have their daily meal, and others just come for a bit of company.” People even drive from south Wairarapa and the Tararua district to enjoy Dish hospitality. It’s a journey worth travelling for. There’s another new face too, chef Lional, who has caused Manny’s welcoming smile to be even wider. Lional has come straight from the kitchens of Dubai’s five-star hotels in the Middle East. Keen to open in the summer evenings, Manny had been on the lookout for a chef to provide spicy dishes with added flavour. Dish will be offering evening dining on Fridays and Saturdays during the

summer months. Asian and Eastern food will be the mainstay “think some of those Cuba Street outlets in Wellington,” muses Manny. Think chilli tacos, korma chicken and bavo sansur. Dish’s great neighbourhood vibe, with a hint of difference, is what Manny and wife Shanika, had hoped to create when purchasing the café three years ago. The friendly atmosphere had been fostered by past owners over 15 years and one of those owners, Margaret, keeps her hand in. She makes her famous Christmas cakes and she also bakes her regular cakes and cookies, which loyal customers seek out. You can’t go past Dish’s “Famous Toasted Sandwiches” either, or the waffles; Cajun chicken burgers (with a secret recipe giving a hint of spice); steak sandwiches, and massive beef burgers. There are also choices for vegetarians. Coffee is by Mojo – the Wellingtonbased company – which Manny says is his customers’ choice. “I thought of changing it at one stage for variation, but I was cried down by everyone,” he laughed. “And of course, the customer is always right.”

He is also a Certified Spreadmark Tester, calibrating fertilising spreading equipment on the ground, and in the air, for maximum accuracy and effectiveness. Jim has half a century of experience in the transport industry, and 20 years as an accredited licence tester. His clients include individuals who wish to gain a particular licence, and businesses requiring staff to be trained, so they can use specific vehicles or equipment. Along with courses for the popular Heavy Vehicle Class 2-5, Jim offers training for forklifts and heavy machinery, such as front-end loaders, excavators, road rollers, Elevated Work Platforms, telehandlers and HiAb cranes. Elevated Work Platform training has become especially popular following more stringent safety requirements introduced in April 2020. These include scissor lifts, cherry pickers, knuckle boom cranes and workshop gantries. Jim teaches the skills to transport dangerous goods too, like acid, fuel,

and flammable products. He also trains for trailer licence and vehicle recovery. The practical assessments are in vehicles provided by the applicant or hired when necessary. The courses are completed to a schedule to suit clients and Jim often travels to many locations to deliver his training. Having built strong relationships with transport companies and businesses that use heavy machinery, Jim has gained a reputation for offering quality training that fully prepares drivers for the real world. And those trainees have included everyone from college students wanting their heavy truck licence, to equestrian enthusiasts wanting the qualification to drive a horse truck. He tries to make the training as user-friendly as possible, and this is happily received by the trainees. There is a shortage of heavy truck and trailer drivers in New Zealand. It can be an exciting and diverse career on the road. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Jim. He has many valuable contacts and details to share.

Le Grá Vineyard and Winery

BRIAN GEARY CHECKING THE VINES. Steve Ruscoe, owner operator of SG Ruscoe Ltd, hard at work

BESPOKE CABINETMAKING AND JOINERY IN OUR BACK YARD

Sláinte at this Celtic sanctuary

A

Tucked away in Ōpaki, north of Masterton, Brian Geary tends 4,000 Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc grapevines, producing 10,000 bottles from each annual harvest.

Steve worked for several local joinery companies over that time. Then, about eight years ago, he started his own company. With decades of liaison with designers, architects, and builders across Wairarapa and Wellington, and with his children all grown up, the time was right to establish SG Ruscoe Ltd.

“The vines are at a nice mature stage with a complexity of flavours in the berries,” Brian says. He and wife Nicky grow, ferment, bottle, and even label the wine.

joiner and cabinet maker for over 40 years, doing things with timber is clearly Steve Ruscoe’s passion.

“I do a wide variety of joinery and cabinetmaking jobs, both indoors and out,” Steve says. This includes kitchens, old villas, weatherboard facades, shop and bar fit-outs, stairs, wardrobes, and commercial renovations. “In many projects, I work on historic and period features such as sash windows,” he says. As well, Steve’s renovated four villas in Carterton and built two homes from scratch. You can’t keep a good man down.

Brian took an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, becoming an ‘old school tradie’ who could turn his hand to anything. That’s been a strength at Le Grá as he’s taught himself viticulture, plumbing, mechanics, and more. “On any one day I might fix the wires, rectify leaks, mend the roller on the mulcher, and then come inside to help make wine with Nicky.”

Le Grá also hosts weddings, events, and music festivals, provides boutique accommodation, and cooks up delicacies for its platters. Brian and Nicky, with daughter Órlaith, do almost everything on the vineyard and – while it’s hard work – they love it.

Brian’s been in New Zealand about 22 years now, first settling with Nicky in Bay of Plenty. Why buy a vineyard in Wairarapa? “Nicky’s from Masterton, so she was bringing us home and, anyway, (hehe) it was cheaper to buy a vineyard than keep Nicky in wine.”

“I’m practical and hands-on,” Brian says, “and Nicky makes me lists of things to do. It works well.”

The viticulture industry welcomed them while they taught themselves what they needed to know. “Karina Southey at Matahiwi Estate has been particularly generous with her knowledge sharing,” Brian says.

The couple met about 23 years ago in Brian’s hometown of Ballyhob in West Cork, Ireland. He was raised on a dairy and beef farm, the youngest of seven children. “I had a wonderful, carefree childhood,” Brian recalls, “with a shotgun and hunting dogs. I bagged pheasant, woodcock, snipe, rabbits, and wild goats.”

“This is a great country. You can work hard and get on. We’ve developed Le Grá into a Celtic sanctuary that we love, and customers love coming here too.” Sláinte.

GREAT SERVICE. TOP TEAM

Digital Cactus

W THE DIGITAL CACTUS TEAM, PATRICK AND ODETTE, WITH CLIENTS.

Innovative digital marketing and web solutions Patrick Flynn, with partner Odette Bayliss, formed their business Digital Cactus two years ago, to provide businesses with digital marketing and web solutions. Their skills are complementary and a winning combination. With her background in marketing and communications, Odette focuses on social media management and paid advertising. Patrick focuses on working with clients, managing projects, and developing websites – pulling together skills from his background in web development and recruitment. “We take a logical approach with our clients,” Patrick says, “based on what a business is selling, and who the target markets are. The aim is to get the right information in front of the right people.”

One local business which had received fewer than five enquiries in three years, went on to receive 16 enquiries in the first month after Patrick redesigned its website. “It’s work like this where you can see a direct impact.” Both Patrick and Odette were born and raised in Wairarapa, so have a good understanding of the business environment here, through both their work and through being involved in the community. The company has also formed alliances with graphic designers, photographers, videographers and so on, to pull projects together with specialised expertise.

Digital Cactus gets to understand target markets and where they spend their time, then uses that knowledge to get in front of potential customers. It also looks at next steps. Patrick is aware that “it’s one thing to get ‘likes’ and website traffic, it’s altogether another for people to make an enquiry or a purchase. We can take a big picture approach to understand a

client’s business and make changes to facilitate those next steps.”

“Our backgrounds are not completely traditional” Patrick acknowledges, “so one of our points of difference is our innovation.” He takes time to understand the business of each client, too, so he can form a strategic approach. “Our work is varied,” Patrick says, “and it’s rewarding to see the results and the difference we can make for businesses.”

ith a staff of nine local and talented decorators, and with the support of his wife Amanda, Luke Mende has taken his company Performance Decorating to another level. “My team aims to be the best at interior and exterior painting whether its commercial or residential, a new build or a repaint. And we’re one of only a handful of Wairarapa companies with the skills required to hang wallpaper,” Luke says. It’s clear he loves wallpapering. “I get on the tools with a passion on the days when I’m wallpapering.” Luke, who has worked in the trade since leaving school at age 16, started Performance Decorating aged only 24. Establishing a startup at such a young age is quite an achievement. “To begin with, I worked all hours of the day and night. And I learned on the job about how to run a business – it’s a whole different ball game.” Twenty years on, Performance Decorating has stood the test of time. “I’m passionate about the job, and motivated to give

customers the best service possible.” Safety is important and it’s part of the professional approach the company takes to all its work. Amanda’s in charge of all the backroom functions and makes sure the team is trained in first aid and has current Site Safe Passports, as well as Lead Based Paint Management and Elevated Work Platform passes. Performance Decorating has previously won three awards in the Master Painter of the Year Awards. It also passes rigorous eco-audits annually and is in the top handful of Resene’s Eco Decorators in New Zealand scoring 100 percent in its last two audits. “Two critical components of being an eco-decorator are the quality of the work and the use of eco-friendly paints where possible alongside the use of our ‘waste wise’ management system,” Luke says. It’s fair to expect that Performance Decorating will be providing Wairarapa with high-quality services for years to come.

Cameron Construction

Gawith Burridge Lawyers

DEAN O’LEARY AND HAMISH EGLINTON.

See your lawyer early on THE CAMERON CONSTRUCTION TEAM (FROM LEFT) MATT, ERROL, MASON AND LOUIE AT ONE OF THEIR NEW BUILDS.

Building that’s good for people and the environment Mason Cameron established Cameron Construction in 2017, bringing his passion for creativity, quality, and sustainability to Wairarapa’s commercial and residential building scene. Based out of Carterton, Mason and his crew (Matthew Small, Errol Smith and Louie Manesa-anae), work on both big and small jobs right across Wairarapa. “One week we’ll be building a deck, putting up a fence, or doing remedial work in a house. The next week we’ll be remodelling a kitchen, renovating a house, or constructing a cost-effective new build,” says Mason. With his interest in homes that are healthy for families and good for the environment, Mason’s company has expertise in building passive homes and working to architecturally designed plans. Cameron Construction is also the Wairarapa licensee for the eHaus company, constructing homes with energy savings of up to 90 percent compared to a regular code build.

Mason whakapapas to Ngā Ruahine and Ngāti Ruanui. Part of his manaakitanga is building up Māori and Pacific people so they have skills and opportunities. That is evident with his crew. This humble and quiet builder and

Wairarapa, he has returned to the region with his young family. 1. Have you recently separated or started a new relaonship? 2. Have you got problems with your employer or employee? If you answered yes, then when is the right me to see a lawyer?

Just two of this dynamic team at Gawith Burridge are Dean O’Leary, a Senior Associate, and Hamish Eglinton, a Solicitor. Whilst both Dean and Hamish have experience in many areas of general pracce, they have a special interest in relaonship property and employment law.

“Go early!” stresses Dean. “it is much beer to speak with a lawyer and seek clarity in the early stages of resolving an issue, than to leave it unl it is so convoluted, that hours of work are needed to untangle it. Whether it is an employment problem or a relaonship breakdown, it can be fraught with emoon, and your lawyer can, at an early stage, help make it easier.” Dean enjoys working alongside clients to achieve a fair outcome in a costeffecve manner.

Dean joined Gawith Burridge seven years ago. Graduang from Victoria University, he has pracsed since 1997 and has previously worked in law firms in Wellington, Sydney, London, and Auckland. Dean is a specialist in employment law and relaonship property.

Hamish agrees, especially with relaonship property issues. “Even when it’s reasonably straight forward, dividing property can take me. As lawyers we can simply enact the law and explain entlements. The pares must have clear informaon to help them make decisions.”

Hamish joined Gawith Burridge in early 2022. Graduang from Victoria University in 2011, he began his career as an in-house counsel at Queen Elizabeth II Naonal Trust and has held roles with the Weatherght Homes Tribunal and the Department of Conservaon. Born and raised in

Cameron Construction’s website www.cameronconstruction.co.nz provides photos of some of the company’s stellar work. What you can’t tell from the website, however, is the humanitarian nature of Mason and his firm. “When I established Cameron Construction,” Mason says, “I had four goals: flexibility, so that I could spend time with my three children, supporting apprentices to gain skills and employment, building a business for my own future, and helping all ends of the spectrum.”

Gawith Burridge is a modern and dynamic firm of 35 staff, and four partners. The experienced team offers a comprehensive range of legal services including Wills, Enduring Powers of Aorney, Family Trusts, Estate Administraon, Sales and Purchases (property, businesses, farms etc), relaonship property and employment maers such as contracts, disputes and grievances. Roofing experts have Wairarapa covered Steve Jennings and his team of roofers have worked on many buildings in Wairarapa ranging from a vast 10,000sqm hotel complex to the smallest of residential units and everything in between. “We essentially lead the way on a project, completing a roof and opening the door for other trades to do their bit,” says Steve.

DR KENNY KIM AT MASTERTON DENTAL.

Kenny Kim: sinking his teeth into local dentistry Dr Kenny Kim knew from the age of 13 he was destined to be a dentist. Today, he and his wife (and fellow dentist) Dr Jeanette Lee, have settled in Masterton with their two cats. “Masterton is convenient, quiet, rural, and close to main cities when we need them.” Dr Kenny says, “I mostly work at the Masterton Dental practice now, although I also spend some time working in our sister clinics in Kapiti and Wellington.” A fourth clinic is based in Geraldine. Dr Kenny and Dr Akash Kota, principal dentists and long-time friends, oversee all four practices with the support of Practice Manager Sonita Louw. “We couldn’t do it without her.” Kenny and Akash became friends at dental school and have trained together in Otago, Australia, America, and Central America including about implants, orthodontics, and teeth straightening with aligners. Now, they’re key players in a thriving and expanding business.

We have a rigorous induction system, we focus on advanced dentistry using innovative technology, and our practice philosophy is aligned. We look at the entire mouth to benefit the patient, reducing the amount of work required.” They’re also committed to explaining options and procedures to their patients. “Knowledge is power.” Kenny met his wife at dental school, too. Dr Jeanette plans to work part-time at Masterton Dental, focusing mainly on oral surgery and extractions, while she and Kenny start a family. They’ve bought a house which they intend to remodel. Tradies, keep your ears open, because Kenny says they’re not DIYers. Instead, they focus on what they know, and they do it well. Kenny arrived in New Zealand from South Korea aged seven, and Jeannette from Malaysia aged nine, with families that expected their children would work hard and contribute to society. Kenny has gone on to meet his parents’ expectations, and more.

“I wouldn’t want to be in business with anyone else,” Dr Kenny says of Dr Akash. “We think the same way.

The experienced and skilled team of eight are everywhere in the region. They work anywhere from Palmerston North to Wellington. Included in the team are three apprentices. Steve is thrilled with his close-knit team, who are skilled, fit, and enthusiastic. They pride themselves on delivering a topquality service, a high workmanship level, and always ensure their communication is first class.

STEPHEN JENNINGS.

No job is too hard or too far away. To re-roof the Mitre Flats hut in the Tararua Ranges, was a project close to Steve’s heart due to his interest in hunting and the outdoors. Equipment and the crew had to be flown in, so a lot of team organisation and project management came into the job. Steve has worked in roofing for 26 years and is proud to lead the Elite Roofing Service team in Wairarapa. Originally from Upper Hutt, he and wife Sonia moved with family to Wairarapa five years ago. As well as providing an excellent roofing service, the team also do wall cladding on all manner of buildings, upgrade spouting, install skylights and create edge protection. Here’s what satisfied clients have to say: “Could you please pass onto Steve and his team our appreciation. Very happy with the work. The workers were courteous, hardworking and have achieved a great result.” Don “We were more than happy with the finished roof, and very impressed with all the workers’ attitude and thorough clean up when finished. I will have no hesitation in recommending your business to anyone wanting their roof replaced.” Yvonne “Thanks again to Steve and the crew – super happy with the work!” Jack.

Scotty’s Construction

MARTINBOROUGH PROJECT – NEW BUILD.

Building one percent better, always Scotty’s Construction, already wellregarded in Wellington, established its Wairarapa team over two years ago. “Wairarapa is a different market to Wellington,” says Scott Feasey, owner and director of Scotty’s Construction. “We’re working with retiring farmers and business owners looking to build new, as well as with big international players who live here for at least some of the year. Our point of difference is our ability to build to the next level of quality and flair that you don’t often see but can always appreciate when you do.” An established company with 23 years under its tool belt, Scotty’s identifies level improvements in every build in relation to materials, techniques and, most importantly, processes. “We aim to make at least one percent in improvements, always,” Scott says. “Whether we’re doing a high-end or a mid-level architectural build, we build homes the Scotty’s way, producing high performance houses in the process.”

fold and set up the Wairarapa team of local tradies. Scotty’s is the only custom residential builder in New Zealand to win gold medal Master Builder awards every year from 2015 to 2020, and there are more in the offing. That’s because the company offers quality, award ¬winning craftsmanship, expert advice, and realistic estimates for each project.

BRAD TAYLOR AND SOME OF HIS TEAM IN MARTINBOROUGH.

Scotty’s is also embracing technology to move its high performance, sustainable homes to reach 100 percent passive certification by 2024. Scotty’s Construction is onto its fifth house in Wairarapa right now, with its team of up to 12 staff and contractors who work across two to three sites. The team loves working with the flat

terrain, great architects, and people in the region ready for refined and outstanding builds. Born and bred in the region, Construction Manager Brad Taylor lives on a rural property between Greytown and Martinborough, so knows Wairarapa well. He worked with Scotty’s nearly ten years ago before trying his hand with other construction companies. He’s since returned to the

Like many hard working and successful builders and entrepreneurs, Scott was earmarked to be a tradie right from when he was at school. “School was not my strong point,” he laughs. But anything trade-related was in his wheelhouse. Married with two children and living in a wonderful house with amazing views (recently remodelled, of course), Scott Feasey and his Wellington and Wairarapa teams are taking Scotty’s Construction to the next level. If you’re an architect or property owner who would like to know more about the Scotty’s way, contact Construction Manager Brad Taylor on 027 477 2200 or at brad@scottysconstruction.co.nz.

Wired Wairarapa

Loan Market Wairarapa

OWNER AJ KEENAN (ON RIGHT) AND JANEIL DE LEEUW LOVING THEIR WORK.

MATT SPICER, OWNER OF LOAN MARKET WAIRARAPA.

All wired up right across the Matt Spicer has your back Wairarapa region Matt Spicer has got your back whether you’re a first home buyer, are looking to upsize or downsize, want to refinance or refix your home loan, or are building new.

Eketāhuna based, servicing Wairarapa and Tararua wide from Cape Palliser to Dannevirke no job is too big or too small for Wired Wairarapa. Owner operator AJ Keenan and his apprentice Janeil de Leeuw install solar systems for businesses and homes (both off-grid and on-grid), heat pump installations, and wiring for your domestic renovations. In addition, with both their experience and expertise, they can help with your farm pumps and other farming equipment that needs to be kept going all day. AJ and Janeil hold great pride in themselves and their work, “you will see us getting involved either with sponsoring or completing project work for schools and other entities too”. AJ has 20 years experience in the electrical field, he was a sparky for John Hudson Electrical for 10 years followed by seven years working on farm electrical for Ordish and Stevens before deciding to start his own company in 2020. “Prior to studying to become an electrician I was a builder, then I became an automotive mechanic and eventually I got around to electrics.”

“Home loans are my bread and butter,” Matt says. He’s had 22 years as a mortgage adviser and 10 years in a bank, purchasing the Loan Market Wairarapa franchise in 2016. “It’s a small team with just me and Tania,” says Matt, “but we’re part of a much bigger team as a franchise, and that’s worth a lot.”

AJ’s building experience is an asset because he understands the need to sequence trades on renovation jobs. Like AJ, Janeil has a broad range of skills and experience starting out as a diesel mechanic and now moving into his second year apprenticeship as an electrician. Janeil (which means ‘the lion’ in Dutch) was brought up on his parents Parkvale dairy farm, so he still gets involved in milking the cows some weekends and also holds a star role sorting out the farm’s robotics. For high quality and a high standard give AJ a call today 021 662 190.

What keeps Matt going as a small business owner is his experience and his word-of-mouth reputation. “I do a good job and have all the relevant information.” Earlier this year, mortgage advisors were required by law to complete the NZ Certificate in Financial Services at Level 5. And ongoing professional development in the industry is required too. Matt is absolutely up to date. You might have noticed that banks are open for shorter hours these days, but Matt’s hours are flexible and accommodating. “I can come and meet you in your office, at your home, in the staffroom at your work, or at a café.” And Loan Market’s offices are central

to Masterton, making it easy for you to pop in. Flexibility is important for Matt for other reasons too. He supports his wife Lauren’s business (He Pounamu Early Nurture Centre in Dalefield) and is very present for his children and grandchildren Saydie and Aarlo. Loan Market Wairarapa can help you structure loans, plan for the deposit, and help you through the complexities of a new build, or purchasing a first home with less than 20 percent deposit. “We assist clients, too, when dealing with other parties involved in the process such as real estate agents, solicitors and valuers.” If you wish, Matt can even be involved through the entire process of your new build to the final drawdown of payment. “I’ve been through the peaks and troughs of the home loan market for over two decades,” Matt says. “I’m still going strong, and I have your back.” Kaylee & Ryan said, in April 2023: Matt is an incredible mortgage adviser! We had no idea where to start but Matt coached us through the process. He was so helpful with our questions and gave professional and honest guidance … We wouldn’t have been able to get into the property market without him.

Wairarapa Windscreens

Tararua Refrigeration Services

FROM LEFT EUAN HARRIS, JOHNATHAN DENYER AND STEEN MCGHIE.

Windscreen stone chip service while you wait There’s no need for a stone chip to stop you in your tracks. Steen McGhie’s company, Wairarapa Windscreens, has established a solid reputation within the automotive glass repair industry for its rapid availability and attention to detail. As an independent operator, Steen proudly stands by his windscreen repairs and receives accolades for the quality of workmanship. It’s a busy windscreen service within the workshop and on the road. Steen owns Tararua Autos in Eketahuna and in 2012, he and wife, Rose-Marie took a leap of faith and set up the independent business doing windscreen repairs in Masterton. Eventually Steen, and senior technician, Euan Harris, moved to the busy Papawai Place, off Ngaumutawa Road, and they have seen an expanding clientele ever since. They enjoy being part of the busy commercial neighbourhood and have a courtesy car if you haven’t time to wait. “Customers can leave their vehicle and can go about their daily business knowing their vehicle is in good hands,” says Steen. The team repair or replace windscreens for all makes and models of cars, vans, and trucks. They also stock a

comprehensive range of windscreens and if they don’t have the correct one, it can be quickly sourced, usually overnight, that includes glass for rare vehicles. They can work with any insurance company. Steen and Euan were joined a year ago by apprentice technician, Johnathan Denyer. What makes Wairarapa Windscreens different is that it offers a multiple service. It’s their proud point of difference in the glass repair market. At the Papawai Place workshop, a windscreen can be repaired along with complete replacement. If a client’s car is getting a warrant of fitness at a garage, and ends up needing a new windscreen, Wairarapa Windscreens uses its mobile service and heads to the car. It’s a popular one-stop service which clients appreciate. Thanks to Steen, Euan, and Johnathan’s precise handiwork, responsive service, and the magic of ‘word-of-mouth’ referrals, Wairarapa Windscreens has steadily grown its customer base – now stretching from Martinborough to Pahiatua. The extra business comes with a demanding workload, including an increase in heavy vehicles but Steen welcomes and enjoys the challenge.

THE TEAM FROM LEFT: GARRY, RICHARD, KINGSTON, AND CORY AT REAR. DAN AND MAT SEATED.

Getting the temperature exactly right Richard and Dana Fleming mull over how to describe their refrigeration business. “A perfectly formed, personalised, independent service,” comes to mind they chime, as they both enthuse over creating the best team of dedicated workers, who all take pride in caring for their clients and where “quality is a must.” Richard is proud to have started the business from scratch five years ago, after 20 years in the refrigeration business. Dana does all the administration out of their Masterton base and Angela is in the showroom in Pahiatua. They service Ngawi to Norsewood. Including Richard, there’s a team of seven out in the vans (including three apprentices) and their expertise is in great demand. Garry is a senior engineer with years of refrigeration experience. Mat is a 3rd year apprentice “a clever jack of all trades”. Cory and Dan are first year adult apprentices having made career changes, enjoying their new-found refrigeration engineering discipline. They appreciate the help of labourers, Kingston and Jack, on work

experience from Tararua and Chanel colleges. Tararua Refrigeration covers all facets of making your life cosy and warm in winter, refreshingly cool come summer. The heat pumps they sell and service, aim to do just that. They also want the refrigeration equipment they service to operate perfectly and not give up any nasty surprises. The same goes for keeping vehicle air conditioning at peak performance. “Think of all the businesses that are reliant on exact temperatures,” says Richard. “Farmers, butchers, cafés - they all need chiller and freezer rooms to keep products at optimal temperature. Getting that temperature right and designing and providing solutions is what we are good at.” They supply Daikin and Mitsubishi heat pumps and encourage customers to have annual service checks. Richard points out that a unique environment needs a unique solution and Tararua Refrigeration Services will produce a design to purpose-fit the need. Call them first and enjoy the personalised service.

Parkers Roading & Contracting

Log Works

THE LOG WORKS DREAM TEAM: ANGUS FAIR, DAVY GARLAND, CHRIS VAUGHN, AND MIKE BARBER.

Specialists in forest harvesting, timber, and Machinery and expertise for earthworks and cartage firewood PARKERS ROADING & CONTRACTING TRUCKS READY TO GO.

“I first became involved in earthmoving by buying a Wairarapa business at the tender age of 19,” Robin Parker says. Back in the day, this sort of transaction by a ‘minor’ had to be verified in court. “The neighbour gave me five years to pay off the cost of the business which included a bulldozer, two trucks, and a front-end loader.” Although Robin traded earthmoving for selling cars and real estate for a while, he’s been back for a couple of decades moving earth for subdivisions, farms, and roading projects. Parkers Roading & Contracting, based in rural Carterton but operating Wairarapa-wide, has grown beyond all recognition. With a team of four, Parkers Roading & Contracting, specialises in: • Construction and maintenance: of driveways, access ways, farm tracks, cow races, building sites, and yards. • Digger work: culverts, drainage, soak holes, offal pits, dairy effluent ponds, dams, and site clearing. • Cartage: transporting lime, topsoil, fill, metal, and more. Parkers has trucks of various sizes and can put

the right one on your job. • Providing: decent fill material, good quality topsoil, and all grades of aggregates and metals from own metal yard. “We have a new machine to play with too,” Robin says. It’s a 30 tonne Volvo dump truck. “We’ve now got two dump trucks. This widens the scope of our work whether earth moving, excavating metal, or doing river work.” Working with heavy machinery has been carried on through his blood, with three of his sons in the concreting, site works, and Australian road train industries. Robin’s fourth son has qualified as a builder and his three daughters are an air hostess, preschool teacher, and bookkeeper. “All my children are hard workers and have done well for themselves.” Robin says, “Parkers has the machinery and the expertise to do almost anything on your farm from earthworks to cartage. Whether you need a few loads of lime carted or a major earthmoving job done, Parkers Transport & Contracting should be your first port of call.”

Davy Garland and his partner Sally Newcombe run their sawmill, firewood, and forestry yard from Parkvale, Carterton.

after studying forestry at university. “I’ve worked extensively in forestry, sawmilling, earthworks, and firewood ever since,” he says.

The quality of firewood supplied by Log Works throughout Wairarapa and Wellington is second to none. The company sells a range of species at competitive rates including gum, macrocarpa and pine. Contact them now to stock up for winter in 2024.

The couple agree it’s rewarding and efficient to run the entire process from standing tree to end product. “Someone can buy decking timber from Log Works and know exactly where the trees were growing.”

Log Works sells timber to the public as: • Landscape Grade (for planter boxes, raised gardens, edging). • Framing Grade (for construction, fencing, panelling, tongue & groove, decking). • Clears (for joinery and furniture). It’s recently added bulk discount packs of landscape grade sleepers and new kitset gardens, which are proving to be very popular at this time of the year. With forestry, Macrocarpa, Eucalyptus and Radiata Pine are the usual choice of species, but the business is also interested in other species like Douglas Fir and Redwood. Davy is a second-generation sawmiller. Originally from Gisborne, Davy established Log Works ten years ago

It’s a real skill to saw a log into its best grade and a challenge that Davy thoroughly enjoys. Anything unsuitable for timber is processed into firewood. Nothing goes to waste, not even sawdust which is used for animal bedding and garden mulch. Davy has mechanised his entire operation so the small team can achieve large volumes safely and easily. “Manual chainsawing is a thing of the past for us,” Davy says. Instead, trees are felled using a 50-tonne excavator with a fixed felling head. Log Works has a fantastic team. Mike Barber is Davy’s highly valued 2IC. Chris Vaughn swaps between sawmilling and the firewood processor. Angus Fair recently left school to join the team, Will Hawira brings logging experience, and Marchelle Laurent completes the team as Logs Works’ delivery driver.

Wairarapa Mitsubishi

BRENT COOPER.

Popular car brand just keeps on giving Brent Cooper and his team at Wairarapa Mitsubishi are unashamedly biased when they say Mitsubishi offers the best quality vehicles at surprisingly affordable prices. “Safety features are extraordinary, styling and attention to detail are impressive, and plug-in hybrids are right up to the minute when it comes to environmental motoring,” says Brent. “Mitsubishi really is a value-based product whichever model fits your needs.” The biggest news out of Mitsubishi Japan for around 17 years is the new 4WD

Triton, expected to be available in New Zealand from next January. Vehicles obviously get Brent excited and this one has him fizzing. The new Triton has larger body dimensions, a longer wheel-base and with more power – a 2.4 twin turbo, rather than the single in the popular Tritons of the past. The exterior body trim screams class finish too with colour insets in interesting places, such as the bonnet edge. It shouts look at me. “But then, looking through all the models

of Mitsubishi over the years, they have always stood out from the vehicle crowd,” says Brent. It’s eight years since he and wife Tracey purchased the Wairarapa Mitsubishi dealership, formerly McKenzie Motors in Masterton. From a staff of seven, they now have 20 employees and a re-vamped premises which boasts the best coffee in the client waiting room, just to the side of the expansive showroom which could park five vehicles at a pinch. No doubt the new Triton will be there.

Brent has a team of four in sales, five service technicians supported by a car cleaner, two in the parts department, and two service advisors at the front desk. He wishes to thank all those staff who support him in the business. “We are going through rapidly changing times in the car industry, and everyone is keen to keep up with the play.” And, then there’s the loyal customers who have supported Mitsubishi through generations in families. “Just like the vehicles we sell, they are mint.”

Ladymead Kennels and Cattery

Silverwood Architects

SILVERWOOD ARCHITECTS’ MEN AT WORK (FROM LEFT) DANE, ASKITH, DARRYL, STEPHEN, JAMES, AND PETER.

MICHAEL & KATE MACKLIN WITH DAFNE (FOUR MONTHS OLD).

An animal adventure loved by all Ever heard of a Schipperke?

“An architect’s skill is dependent on their ability to listen and absorb each client’s brief, and to then use that brief to provide them with a beautifully crafted bespoke design,” says Stephen Geuze, one of Silverwood Architect’s directors. Co-director, James Silverwood, agrees that listening and understanding the brief is an integral part of the design process.

Michael Macklin, the co-owner of Ladymead Kennels and Caery just north of Masterton, explains it’s a small sturdy dog commonly known as a ‘Barge Dog’, originang from Belgium where in mes past they have been used to chase out rats and mice from the canal’s barge boats. You can just imagine its small, pointed nose, fing down crevasses, and doing a grand job.

Silverwood’s most recent residential successes include the modernisation of older villas and bungalows, modern new homes that are designed from the ground up, and the unique tiny homes (modern baches) designed for the Lake Ferry Hotel. Stephen says that the key to residential architecture is “to understand how people want to use their homes and to then design solutions to suit.”

The double coated breed also copes well in cold condions. Wairarapa’s winter has been a breeze for lile Dafne, named aer Dutch track and field athlete Dafne Schippers. Michael speaks lovingly of his Schipperke, which he chose from the latest lier his mother, Sandra, has bred. Sandra is one of only two Schipperke breeders in New Zealand and so Dafne is special. Michael’s love of dogs comes from the family passion and so purchasing Ladymead Kennels and Caery with wife, Kate, was a natural progression in life for him.

JENSEN, A REGULAR BOARDER.

Mud has been a constant problem for the kennels. The exercise yards and runs have been upgraded and enlarged in recent years but keeping them dry has been a challenge with the winter rains.

He holds back from wanng to own more dogs. Dafne and Cruise, an elderly German Shepherd, are his limit.

“The dogs love it,” laughs Michael, but the owners like to receive their pets back in reasonably clean condion, so aer a day’s romping, Michael and his team are mindful to give the animals a quick bath before they go home.

It’s not surprising when you hear the dog numbers Michael and Kate aract. In winter, their manageable maximum is around 70 dogs per day.

Michael and Kate are ably assisted by Carla Smith who has many years of experience working with all types of animals.

Around 25-30 of these are daycare dogs whose owners drop them off on their way to work or for meout.

There’s also Julia Harrild, who has also been with them the past two years. The Macklin children Ryley (6) and Samantha (3) like to help where the can.

Winter is busy with boarders because many people go overseas on holiday, says Michael. “2023 has been especially busy as people get away post-covid mes.”

Bespoke and beautiful designs for homes and workplaces

Low maintenance, weather tight, adaptable, innovative, and sustainable buildings are what everyone is after but “no project is the same and that makes every job interesting and fulfilling.” Silverwood Architects, based out of a villa on Masterton’s Church Street, was established here exactly 30 years ago, but has a history dating back over a century when the firm was originally called Raymond Lee Architects. James’ father, Darryl Silverwood, a wellrespected architect, remains very involved in the business but enjoys sharing the responsibility with codirectors James and Stephen. The rest of the team is comprised of architectural graduates Dane Riordan, Askith Camposagrado and Kerry Bryant, and architectural technician Peter Tennent. Margaret Butler is the practice manager who keeps it all together. At the heart of it, Silverwood Architects Ltd is a family business with a passion for innovative and functional architecture that it wants to share with its community.

Kiwi Magic Ltd

Brooks Refrigeration Services

ROSS EGGERS, OWNER OF KIWI MAGIC, WITH SOME OF HIS CARS FOR SALE.

SHANE HUNT AND ADAM BROOKS ON THE JOB.

Only the best, for peace of mind motoring

For AC, refrigeration, heat pump, and chiller hire needs

Working with cars since he was a lad, Ross Eggers, owner of Kiwi Magic in Masterton’s Queen Street, has Wairarapa’s best collection of used cars for sale.

With over 20 years’ experience in the refrigeration industry, Adam Brooks saw there was a gap in the market about six years ago and hankered to be his own boss. It was a gamble and came with sleepless nights but, for the Brooks family, owning Brooks Refrigeration has been a winner.

Starting out as a motor mechanic, a tyre re-treader, and then manager of a tyre factory, Ross learned about vehicles from the ground up. He started selling cars in 1965. “I sold used cars in Wellington for about 40 years,” Ross says. Over a ten-year period, he also owned five new car dealerships. Moving to Masterton in 2006 was originally intended to be a step towards retirement but “I was sick of retirement after one week.” So Kiwi Magic was born. Asked what his secret is for surviving in business for so long, Ross says, “hard work never killed anyone. And I always stand behind what I sell – but not in front of it, in case I get run over.”

His team includes the best car groomerdetailer in town, a sales manager, office manager, and Ross himself. “Before you buy,” Ross says, “take the vehicle for a test drive, then talk to us about trade-in and finance options. Buyers always start off with 12 months registration and a 12-month warrant. We only sell vehicles we know are the best, so that we can offer our customers ‘peace of mind motoring’. We look after people.” When he’s not on the forecourt or in the office at Kiwi Magic, Ross is back at his lifestyle block in Masterton East which he runs with his wife, a former schoolteacher. Ross reckons he only went to school to eat his lunch. He came from a loving and caring family and has worked hard since age 15 and his first job. This man knows how to run a business: “it’s about doing right by people,” he says.

With a great agent into the Japanese market, and with about 80 or more Japanese and local cars on the forecourt at any time, Kiwi Magic can offer a wide selection of used makes and models.

The administration for the busy refrigeration service is carried out by Felicity, Adam’s business partner and wife. Shane Hunt is doing his refrigeration engineer’s apprenticeship after years in the wine industry. Naturally mechanically minded, he has seen first-hand the importance of refrigeration in all aspects of business. Heat pumps and air conditioning units, heat transfer kits, and automotive aircon are a big part of their work, all needing regular maintenance and cleaning. When it comes to installing air con units, Adam likes to be aware of clients’ budget and home layout and to work alongside them to ensure the correct size is installed for upmost efficiency. Cafes and restaurants’ fridge and freezer units need regular attention. There are also automotive airconditioning systems to maintain.

WE HAVE OVER

Cars, trucks, tractors, and all farm equipment often need re-gassing and leak testing. The list goes on. Anything needing cooling, or given an even temperature control, is where Brooks Refrigeration can help. Always looking to improve its service, Brooks Refrigeration’s point of difference is its mobile chiller trailer, which Adam built for customers to hire if they need an instant back-up chilling facility. And, on the farm, the mobile trailer really comes into play, especially when refrigeration facilities break down or need servicing but there’s no room for no refrigeration storage while repairs are made. “We work throughout the Wairarapa region and further afield as the jobs take us. As owners of Brooks Refrigeration, Felicity and I pride ourselves on communication and quality workmanship, whatever the job.” Adam says “I like to look at every job as if it was at my own home. Please contact me for a no obligation and free quote. Let’s see what we can make happen.”

Wairarapa’s commercial and domestic roofing specialists

A.T. Roofing team atop one of their great re-roof jobs - Douglas Park School Masterton

When it comes to cladding and roofing, the team and A.T. Roofing have all your needs covered.

BEFORE

AFTER

They offer commercial, domestic, long-run steel and membrane installations using quality New Zealand-made products suitable for all conditions the Wairarapa weather can throw at us. The 14-strong team is led by Sam Jury (Manager), Blair Heming (Operations Manager) and Aaron Gordon (Supervisor/ trainer). The entire team comes from diverse backgrounds and range from skill sets like labourers, through to apprentices (four at present), to highly skilled roofers and cladders. “AT Roofing employs local people who have come from diverse backgrounds, may have lived and worked elsewhere, but who now choose Wairarapa as home,” says Sam. “We attempt to create a happy work environment for what can be a tough job, involving hours leaning over in the hot sun, or balancing on slippery steel in the wind and rain.” Sam knows all about working in harsh conditions, having worked in the outdoors doing scrub cutting and pest reduction. Originally coming from an extensive roofing background, he returned to the industry and the AT Roofing team following the passing of its founder, Adam Gerritsen in January 2022. He had grown the business over almost a decade to be the largest roofing company in Wairarapa. “This was no mean feat and the team wanted to see the company continue to flourish,” says Sam. AT Roofing is certainly a committed team to completing quality roofs they would be happy to have on their own homes,

businesses, or farm building. Amongst recent large-scale re-roofing jobs has been Douglas Park School, while an architecturally designed house in the Tararua foothills had the guys on their toes, with one of the ridgelines pointing directly west towards Powell Hutt. “We have completed a variety of reroofs in the past year – large and small homes, garages, rentals, shops – including conversions from tiles to pre-painted long run steel,” says Aaron. Aaron has moved through the ranks at AT Roofing and is now responsible for the men’s training. “It can be a great career, with everchanging challenges, in a variety of settings. Seeing the building with a new roof, re-roof or cladding is real sense of completion.”

Cheers Auto & Tyres Ltd

Osborne Group

JASON OSBORNE.

THE CHEERS AUTO & TYRES LTD TEAM (FROM LEFT) BEN, LIAM, JOEL, AND JASON.

Cheers to you and your happy car Family owned since 1989, Cheers Auto & Tyres continues to provide professional and honest service, with customer satisfaction its top priority. Owned by Ben and Jordan Hooper since 2018, the reception area of Cheers Auto & Tyres Ltd has been given a facelift, business is booming, and the workshop is flat out with four mechanics on the job. Jason Brixton, Joel Charters, and Liam Morrison, as well as Ben himself, are in the workshop. Jordan and Bonnie manage the office and accounts. Ben and Jordan also manage their rural Carterton livestock block and their two children have (well maintained) motorbikes for getting round the land. The corrugated iron characters on the workshop’s roofline - spelling out the name of the business - can be seen from afar. The workshop is situated just over the railway line in Pembroke Street, Carterton. “This means that commuters can step off the train just before 6pm, see our lights on, and whip down to pick up their vehicle.”

CARS!

Cheers Auto & Tyres is open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 6pm.

The workshop is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and equipment and offers a complete range of mechanical services for all makes and models of vehicle. As well as the bread-and-butter wof’s and services, Cheers Auto & Tyres Ltd covers wheel alignments, batteries, radiator cooling system repairs, engine re-conditioning, suspension, exhaust, gearbox and diff repairs, cambelts and more. Whatever a vehicle needs to keep it safe and running on the road. Ben can source parts for all vehicles quickly and gets competitive prices. He will happily provide quotes and is WINZ approved. Cheers Autos & Tyres Ltd is also an approved repairer for most insurance policies. Cheers Auto & Tyres Ltd encourages vehicle owners to maintain and service their vehicles so to avoid potentially bigger problems down the track. “It may sound counterproductive for a workshop,” Ben says, “but we love to see vehicles well looked after and clients not having to face hefty bills due to delayed maintenance.”

He is justifiably proud of the company he founded in 2007, with just three clients. He surged onward and proudly indicates to his team of 10 accountants, three admin staff plus himself who work alongside clients all over Wairarapa. Jason is also proud of the experienced and loyal staff he has been able to attract and retain. “We have built a great team here who all enjoy the positive working environment we have created.” For example, annually, as part of its commitment to

community, the Osborne Group team take a day out of the office to work for a charity, collectively chosen by the staff. It’s a fantastic team-building exercise where we all learn lots about each other.” “For our South Wairarapa clients, it was an obvious call to establish a second hub in Greytown, and it means we are easily available wherever you live.” Osborne Group offers upskilling in accounting software packages. “We are way more than simply an accounting firm which sorts out how much tax you must pay.” With our huge skill set, including four Chartered Accountants, we can offer quality business advice.” Maxim Business Consulting, Osborne Group’s associate service. Advice is given on structure, management, risk mitigation, growth acceleration, and general business counsel. It allows people to set realistic goals reducing the risk of wandering through a business without any clear planning or goals. We believe knowing where you are heading, and with some idea of the result, is imperative,” adds Jason. “Maxim will happily mentor people who have other accountants but want to take advantage of our business consulting service.” And the one piece of advice Jason gives to anyone in this current financial market. “Be aware of your situation, plan ahead, and then if an opportunity comes up, you can grab it.”
