celebrating Wairarapa women and telling their stories

Your locally owned newspaper

Welcome

Mayor Lyn Patterson

Kia ora koutou, I am pleased to again write the introduction for the annual Women in Business feature, celebrating women in our community doing great work.

I am pleased to see our Council organisation doing great work in supporting emerging female leaders, as you can see one of the great leaders profiled on the opposite page.

Having women involved in our local businesses, including at a leadership level, is crucial to ensure the success of these businesses. It has been shown time and time again that diversity brings resilience. It’s a simple fact that the more diversity you have when making decisions the more robust that decision-making process tends to be and that’s good for everyone.

The organisation has a range of policies to support work-life balance, which is often a determining factor in women returning to work and staying in the workforce.

Unfortunately, gender equality remains a prevalent issue across New Zealand. Latest statistics indicate the gender pay gap is around 12 per cent – meaning, on average, men are getting paid 12 per cent more than women in the same equivalent position. This is something New Zealand as a whole needs to continue to focus on to improve. Local Government can also do better on gender equity. Three out of the Masterton District Council’s eleven elected members are women, putting our statistic at 27 per cent. This is better than many Council’s around New Zealand, but there is obvious room for improvement.

Finally, while we’re celebrating women in business in this feature, we must not forget those volunteers and women working at home looking after families. We should value and celebrate them for their contribution as well. Congratulations to everyone involved in this feature – let’s continue to work together towards a day when the quality of the individual becomes the most important factor in their success, not whether they are male or female. Terri Mulligan

Environmental Services Manager For Terri Mulligan, Masterton District Council’s Environmental Services Manager, it’s leading teams that’s important, not managing them. And that leadership should be shown within an organisation as well as externally. “Naturally Councils hold a prominent position in the communities in which they serve, so it’s important that we’re demonstrating good leadership,” Terri says. “For me, I’m a real people person and I really enjoy feeling like I’m working with a great team that is helping to make a difference in our community.” Terri was recently a finalist in the 2018 SOLGM Brookfields Emerging Leader Award – a category in the pre-eminent awards for local government organisations. “Personally, I was thrilled to be named as a finalist. It’s a great achievement for me but also for Masterton as well – you can see more and more female taking leading roles throughout our community and that’s a great example to be setting for our younger generations. “Attending the awards also gave me invaluable insight into what other councils around New Zealand are doing and the opportunities we have to improve the way we do things,” Terri says. Terri’s team is one of the primary interfaces between the community and Council with work around alcohol licensing, environmental health, bylaws and animal services. It’s her objective that those in her team are trusted members of the community and that people know they can come to for advice and support. “I’m big on my team being out and about with the people they often work with day-to-day, it’s an important part of people knowing that we are approachable and are here to help them,” Terri says. Jaxon Rose

SOPHIE MCCOY & JULIE TULLOCH

KYLIE MEREDITH & JUDITH SAYER

Once again, the wonderfully stylish and fun pair

Mother and Daughter – dynamic duo

Julie and Sophie have grown their business dramatically and are well settled in their new store on Chapel Street. The wonderfully stylish and fun pair are enjoying their large space, with oodles of room they can now indulge their love of ‘all things gorgeous’. The lifestyle mecca sells a fabulous range of items from furniture and drapes to jewellery and art. There is literally something beautiful to look at in every corner. The two clothing ranges that mix New Zealand and Italian design flair have been going really well and there will be new items in store over the coming months. The two women ooze style and relaxed elegance. While in many ways they are different and describe the style of their store as “eclectic” – there is one overriding theme of relaxed luxury and comfort. Everything is beautiful, yet comfortable. Julie says their combined style was once described as “charmingly eclectic” which she quite liked.

available and that is part of their success. “Some customers lean more towards Julie’s style, and some might naturally lean more towards mine. But there’s also a definite meeting in the middle - and it all comes together cohesively as one style.” Clearly there is a great deal of respect between them, as while they are each drawn to different things, they also really like and appreciate the other’s individuality. The pair have a natural flair and style that is self-evident. But their natural talent is also backed up with decades of experience in interior design and colour consultancy working within the industry and as personal consultants. The store also provides a full service option for interior design and colour consultancy. The service extends beyond what is available in-store and extends to big decisions such as exterior colours, such as roofing, windows, and doors. For interior design, Julie and Sophie provide advice and support for the biggest decisions, such as kitchen and wall colours, carpets, tiling, furniture and drapery – right through to the little details and accessories that turn a house into a home, such as the pillows, rugs, lamps and throws. Both Julie and Sophie are passionate about wanting their clients to feel that they end up living in a space that they love. “We want our clients to feel relaxed in their space and to be completely at home with it,” says Julie.

Between the two of them Sophie believes they have the full spectrum of style

This energetic mother and daughter team are bursting with enthusiasm as they describe their new baby – Jaxon Rose – at www.jaxonrose.com, an online baby and children’s boutique clothing website selling epic streetwear and beautiful occasional wear for ages newborn to eight - to the world! Kylie is a Business Banking Manager by day, mother of two, partner on a farm as well as Jaxon Rose’s marketing, social media, stock ordering and technological guru by night. Judith is a Showroom sales manager by day, grandmother, and online stock and inventory manager by night, at times staying up into the early morning to get the orders packed and out. Originally customers of Jaxon Rose, they spotted a potential gap – and opportunity - in the market. “I love children’s fashion and being able to showcase a child’s personality through clothing.’ Kylie says. The clothing ranges stocked by Jaxon Rose are all of the highest quality, many handmade with exceptional detail. “We love to support smaller businesses delivering high quality products from New Zealand and around the world, One of our favourite brands is Kidult and Co started by a group of UK-based women to campaign against bullying.” The collections stocked at Jaxon Rose are sourced from New Zealand, Australia, UK, Bali and Poland. Judith adds that she loves children’s clothing so much she confesses, “One of the reasons I

returned to work was to be able to afford to buy my own children cute clothing!” Not every parent and child (no matter how grown up!) could work together but the vibe these two have is infectious. “We love that building the business gives us a chance to spend time together,” says Kylie. One big adjustment was sharing the dining room with a rapidly increasing stock room. While the two are enjoying seeing the business grow and market expand, the on-line business means they can keep the personal touch with each order. Judith pops in personalised notes in with each carefully tissue-wrapped package. Jaxon Rose offers a layby system that gives you the clothes up-front with payments spread over the following 6 weeks! Considering the pair only bought the business at the beginning of this year, they have achieved a lot. The beautiful and easy to use website is well and truly up and running and systems are in place to ensure everything runs smoothly. Check them out on Instagram and Facebook or sign up to their newsletter to keep up to date on new stock arriving, sales and pop-up markets near you!

SUE REID AND KALLI HOOPER

ANA EDWARDS

Words of welcome

From country girl to skincare

To say Sue and Kalli like books is a little like saying Willy Wonka is quite keen on chocolate. They love books! And it’s a passion they love to share. “The mantra we live by…” says Sue, “..is matching the right book with the right person. Quite simply, we love helping people find books they will love”. This duo are known as the ‘book team’ at Paper Plus Masterton. Sue is the store’s Book Manager, and her recommendations are sought out not just by thousands of loyal customers, but by the book buyers at Paper Plus head office. Her knowledge of books is encyclopaedic, some say it’s a little freaky! Kalli is the store’s childrens’ book specialist. “Helping parents and grandparents find the perfect book for their child is incredibly rewarding”, says Kalli. The store is fast becoming a magnet for families, with a children’s area boasting a train set, a teepee, a Lego table, even a life-sized tiger! And comfy chairs for big people to share books with little people. Sue and Kalli are thrilled to be witnessing a resurgence in ‘real’ books rather than digital versions. “We are noticing people of all ages wanting to be able to have and to hold the real thing. The appeal of reading a book on a screen is diminishing, and we’re not surprised – it’s just not the same”, says Sue.

It doesn’t take long to notice just how important it is to both Sue and Kalli that their customers receive personal service. Readers are carefully matched to the right book and they enjoy introducing their regular customers to new titles and new writers. “I love the feeling you get when a customer comes to tell you how much they loved the latest book I recommended. It’s great to build up that trust”, says Kalli. There are two ‘clubs’ run by these book experts. Sue’s Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month. It’s for ‘committed bookish types’, keeping them up-to-date with the latest books. “It’s fantastic, we review books, play book-related games, watch trailers about publisher’s upcoming releases; it’s a lot of fun, in fact often there’s more laughter than literature!” New members are very welcome. Then there is ‘Kalli’s Kids Club’, perfect for parents and grandparents wanting to encourage their kids into the world of words. It’s a subscription club – one annual payment and three books are sent personally to your child every three months. Kalli uses all her experience to match the right books to the right child according to their age and interests. It’s proving very popular. New owners, Warwick and Sarah are encouraging a very ‘creative’ approach at the store and are thrilled to have such an experienced and welcoming team on board. The couple moved from Auckland and are new to the industry. “It’s been fantastic coming into a store already so well run, the team here has made our job so much easier”, says Warwick.

Where new ideas arrive every day Happy and proud to support our community.

Ana has always been passionate about skin care, but she’s also comfortable on the farm. Growing up in Kahutara in South Wairarapa on a dairy farm, Ana made her first switch from farming to beauty, training at the NZ Institute of Electrolysis and Beauty Therapy in Palmerston North in 1993. She has moved between the two industries throughout her earlier career. At one stage while working in farming, she loved beauty therapy so much she set herself up in beauty therapy in Featherston on her days off! Ana spent 11 years in Australia in the beauty therapy industry before returning to Wairarapa and settling in Carterton in 2013 and setting up Serene Beauty Therapy in June 2014. The name, Ana, means serene in English, and that’s what Ana aspires to create for her loyal clientele. Ana loves the beauty industry, saying “I love it and can’t ever see myself leaving the industry now. It’s been 24 years and I learn something new all the time”. She’s passionate about skin care, “You only have one skin – you have to look after it”.

Stocking Environ Skin Care (exclusive in Wairarapa), Ana is excited about her upcoming event. Once a year, Environ bring a 3D imaging machine to New Zealand to allow customers a chance to truly see their own skin at the “Visia” event. This is Ana’s third time running the event, so some of Ana’s repeat customers will be able to see the progress their skin has made since the last event. The machine analyses your skin’s redness, UV damage, wrinkles, pores and bacteria levels, other key factors and prescribes product solutions. Environ was started by a cosmetic surgeon who had a patient who died of skin cancer at the age of 23. The sad situation inspired him to create a skin care range that actually strengthens the skin to help prevent cancer. See below for more details. Serene Beauty Therapy stocks the Jane Iredale make-up range and Ana performs all the treatments you would expect from a professional beauty therapist from her salon based at home. Services include hot stone massages and electrolysis through to vitamin facials and treatment make-up. Ana loves all her clients, saying “My clients are just lovely. They are so supportive”. Ana loves chatting and laughing with her clients, or letting them relax, whatever they need while they get a lovely treatment. “I love that feeling when your client is thrilled with their results and enjoys their experience, it’s magic,” she says.

KATELYN GEORGE

NIKI KNIGHT

Best of both worlds – legal and lifestyle

A challenge with big life priorities

Katelyn George has been a registered legal executive at WCM Legal for just one year and is loving the balance of working between town and city. She lives in Carterton and commutes by train to Wellington two days a week, working from the Masterton office the other three days. “I feel very lucky to have the best of both worlds. I get to enjoy the hustle and bustle of Wellington city, the shopping and walking along the waterfront. And then I love to be here in Masterton enjoying the slightly more relaxed pace of life and the much shorter commute,” she says. Katelyn’s focus is property law but she does work in general areas of practice as well. Between Wellington and Wairarapa there is quite a difference between what is required. “In Wellington we often get complicated titles and much smaller sections and you would be lucky to have any grass at all. Here in Wairarapa there is much more space, so we don’t get those concerns. Instead we might be helping people get into their first home, subdivide or move up the property ladder,” says Katelyn. Katelyn is still young, qualifying as a legal executive with the diploma completed through the Law Society at the end of 2015. She has considered going to law school at a later stage but at this stage is very happy doing what she is doing. As she says, “I get

to practise the areas of law that I enjoy anyway.” Originally working for another law firm, Katelyn is very happy with her new team, describing them as “very supportive and helpful”. She also says having the Wellington office has helped her expand her client base and be more helpful to clients who have business in Wellington. The advantage of the Masterton office is that everyone knows everyone in the industry – from the real estate agents and mortgage brokers to the banking officers, and accountants involved, so it makes it much easier and smoother to move through the process. Katelyn clearly gets a lot of satisfaction out of her work. “I love that I’m part of helping people achieve their goals. Buying a house – or anything in property – is a big deal. I like to help people through the process, which can be stressful for them,” she says. Katelyn is also happy to meet her clients in any of WCM Legal’s other offices which are in Featherston, Carterton, and Greytown. Katelyn, who was born and bred in Wairarapa, lives with her partner, and pug (‘Pugsley’), who occasionally gets to go to work with her as the ‘therapy pug’. Unfortunately for Pugsley, he is outnumbered by three cats at home.

LAWYERS & NOTARY PUBLIC

Husband and wife team, Niki and Gary Knight, bought the Laser Plumbing franchise just over 18 months ago when the opportunity came up and was too good to pass by. Niki has been running it, alongside Gary, since she officially joined in February last year. She’s absolutely relishing the challenge of the new business combined with the flexibility to really enjoy her family time. With flash new premises in Olive Street, Niki is at the helm, running the office and keeping everything ticking over smoothly. “The building industry is booming so we are enjoying being a part of it,” says Niki. Used to working within mostly female teams, Niki says it has been a slight adjustment, being the only woman in the business, but she wouldn’t change a thing. The new business has also allowed Niki to utilise another string that she has on her bow – interior design. She has a diploma in interior design, which means she is a lot of help when it comes to designing spaces that will really function well for their clients. The clients agree - their feedback is

consistently very good. While working with her husband is also new to Niki, they are pleasantly surprised with just how well it is going. “At the end of the day, we are a great team. We know and respect each of our complementary strengths. Gary runs his team and has all the technical expertise. I take care of all the organisational tasks to let the boys get on with their jobs. We meet in the middle when it comes to spatial design – we both love that part of the job,” she says. Niki has also enjoyed learning all the new technology that is available now to make life and work easier and more manageable. For example, she enjoys being able to keep things running smoothly through applications on her phone while working at home if she needs to. Niki says she has “never looked back” and has absolutely no regrets about taking on the business. “It’s been a huge learning curve, but I’ve loved every minute”. One of the upsides of owning your own business is being able to balance the challenge and excitement of business with the big life priorities. “I love that when Dad came to visit from Sydney, I could choose to shut up the shop and take him out to lunch. Or that the kids and grandkids pop in to say “Hi”. I couldn’t have done that in my old career. I love that freedom”.

Carterton District Council

WORKING WOMEN OF CDC

Focus on Family

sense of purpose in what they do. So they’re committed to the work. But they also know that we all understand at the end of the day, it’s family first”.

Balancing Act at Work Carterton District Council is known for being a progressive and communityminded council, but it’s also very family – and life – friendly. “We understand that there is actually life outside work, here at the Council,” says CEO, Jane Davis. “We have an incredibly loyal and committed workforce. One of the reasons for that is that we appreciate that everyone – and particularly working Mums – have responsibilities outside of work who they need to take care of.” The workforce at CDC is roughly half men and half women. Most are balancing work and family. Jane is particularly in awe of the women on her team that are making it work. “My team are all incredibly hard-working and productive. Many of them are working

Mums and the way they balance their home life and career is admirable,” she says. “We appreciate that and also understand that family needs to come first. So if a Mum (or Dad for that matter) needs to pop out to see a special sporting event or prize giving, we’re perfectly okay with that. We know the work gets done”. And the work certainly does get done. By valuing their employees and allowing them that work and life balance, the Council is seeing the returns in terms of commitment and loyalty from their staff. “We know that one of the reasons our team members stay with us and work so hard, is because we do appreciate how hard it is to balance life outside work,” says Jane. “Everyone who works here has a strong

You get the sense that women, and mothers in particular, are not only accommodated at work, but also appreciated. That approach is led from the top. “The management at CDC are great. Occasionally as a working Mum I have other commitments I either have to make – like a sick child – or I really want to make – if one of my children is receiving an award. “In those cases I can work from home or pop out for a couple of hours. I’m never made to feel guilty about it. I know I more than make it up by working even harder because I’m so grateful!” says a working Mum at the Council. In council or work meetings, it’s not unusual to see a child playing quietly in a corner while work and business get done.

from home or a councillor can’t get a babysitter for a certain meeting. We make adjustments, and everyone works together to make sure the work gets done which is the important thing,” says Jane. Especially for council members, being on the council isn’t their ‘day job’; it is usually something that they do on top of their day-to-day work and life. So it’s even more crucial to be accommodating. Jane is proud of the culture that is being developed within the council, and is always keen to promote its successes. “By supporting our staff to achieve a sustainable work life balance we are establishing a workplace where our team are loyal and take pride in delivering top notch work. “The productivity of the team is quite sensational, and our women are key to its success. I may be at the helm of the ship, but the crew that we have in place makes for smooth sailing.”

and is very willing to go the extra mile for her clients. She has been a wonderful addition,” says Joelle.

Joelle was always destined to do something that involved caring about, and for, people. Her fascination for product ingredients, biology of the skin and genuine compassion for people led her to find her niche in Beauty Therapy. After 16 years in the Beauty Therapy industry, Joelle still finds pampering, educating and treating her clients, incredibly rewarding. Thrilled to have her own space, Joelle joined The Hubb when it opened its doors 18 months ago. She works alongside her brother Ryan Monastra and sister-in-law Maryanne Monastra who are the Directors of Back in Action, also under The Hubb’s roof. Joelle had been involved in the redesign of a beauty salon in Brisbane so when the opportunity came to design her own space, she knew exactly what she wanted for her clients. She has created a clean, nurturing and relaxing sanctuary. Beauty Within Boutique recently welcomed Kelly Dillon to the team. Joelle didn’t have to look too far for the perfect candidate, as Kelly’s husband Garry works as a physiotherapist within The Hubb. “Kelly is a very talented therapist. She is a perfectionist with all that she does

The salon has also grown in terms of the products and services they provide. Having recently added online booking to the website, more facial options, eyelash extensions and spray tanning. Joelle researched and chose products that are cruelty free, paraben and sulphate free, and do not contain any artificial fragrances or colours. Beauty Within Boutique are proud to be the exclusive stockist of Ultraceuticals skincare in Wairarapa. Joelle first came across Ultraceuticals skincare nine years ago while working in Australia. “It is the most reliable and results-driven product range I have ever worked with. Our clients are loving their results at home and in the salon”. To complement her skincare range, Joelle introduced Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup. Suitable for acne-prone, sensitive and reactive skin types, Jane Iredale covers redness effectively, protects the epidermis and promotes healing. Joelle offers full colour consultations in salon, so that you can try it for yourself. Joelle, her husband and two children have made themselves at home in Wairarapa. She describes the community as “welcoming and supportive”, and expects to stay. She is very thankful for her ‘down to earth’ and loyal client base that is growing day by day so that she can continue doing the job she loves.

Osborne Group

women in business 2018

Melanie is the sort of accountant you would go to see without dreading the appointment. Friendly and upbeat, she juggles working 32+ hours a week based on weekdays, 8am till 3pm along with continued study and being a Mum. Melanie relishes the opportunity she has at Osborne Group to continue to grow in her chosen field. Beginning with a diploma in business through UCOL in Palmerston North, Melanie is now finishing off the last of a business degree, majoring in accounting and management. After that she will continue to do the theory alongside her practical work at Osborne Group to become a Chartered Accountant. With loads of experience at a variety of accountants in Palmerston North and Wairarapa, along with working in an accounts department at an Art Gallery in the United Kingdom, Melanie is particularly enjoying the learning environment that owner Jason Osborne consciously fosters. “I love the team I work with here at Osborne Group. Jason is a great boss who ensures we

are all working at the top of our game, constantly growing and evolving,” says Melanie. Melanie loves the communityoriented aspect of working for Osborne Group, saying, “We really get out there and support some great initiatives and projects, it’s exciting”. Melanie has been at Osborne Group for four years now and the role she stepped into was a newly created one. Melanie cares for her clients and prides herself on doing more than just punching numbers, instead aiming to foresee trends and predict her clients’ future needs. She particularly likes working with new clients, making it as simple as possible for them so that they can get on with their own business and not worry about the accounting side of things. Melanie admits prioritising and balancing work, study and family is a juggling act, but one she is happy to do. Describing the challenge as “interesting”, she credits her success to understanding lecturers, a flexible study schedule, a great boss and a helpful husband. Her step-son, Logan, is 8 and her daughter, Sophie-Jane, is 19 months old. She loves family movie nights and has two big-ticket items on her bucket list – a tiger moth flight and hang-gliding.

Helloworld Masterton makes travel easy

Not just shopping… an experience

The business, at 12 Perry St in Masterton, is full of travel experience and enthusiasm, with its six staff all having a huge knowledge base of places to see, how to get there, and where to stay. People come to them for advice that you can’t get off the Internet. The other thing is the help after you’ve made your booking. There can be all kinds of events – volcanic eruptions, airports closed due to storms – it just takes one call to them to sort out all the issues with the airlines, the re-ticketing, rescheduling. If people have done it themselves, they’ll end up sitting on the end of the

phone for ages whereas Helloworld have dedicated airline support offices and they can go straight through to them to sort things out quickly. Helloworld arose out of the merging of Harvey World Travel and the Air New Zealand Holiday brands two years ago and that blend of expertise has lots of benefits for customers, including cheap airfares not available to the general public. They also offer travel insurance and foreign exchange overnight as well as visa and passport services. Helloworld operates several information evenings for clients. Anybody interested in these should phone Helloworld to go on the register. The Masterton store is locally owned and operated and comes with a long history of looking after people from Wairarapa. It also offers Fly Buys – and is the only agency in Wairarapa to do this. Leigh Feast and Laura Dawes are the coowners. Leigh has been in the Masterton store for 20 years and Laura for 15 years. They have two consultants who have been there 12 years and the newest has been there seven. Because of the length of service they have built up a loyal following with their many repeat clients. Helloworld is open six days a week in Masterton (10am-1pm on Saturdays) and also operates its office in Greytown opposite the White Swan on Wednesday through Friday from 9am-5pm.

Walking in to Mr Feather’s Den with its “oddities and delights” is definitely fun and quite the experience. Similarly, chatting to owner Susan Ryan is just as much fun and quite the experience! Susan and partner Paul bought the 1875 building in Featherston in 2012 with a view to fulfilling both their ambitions. For Susan it was Mr Feather’s Den. “Having looked at a number of locations in Wairarapa, it was quite obvious to choose State Highway 2 and Featherston. Great location and a place we saw as having the potential to be a thriving retail destination.” A mixture of old and new, the store comes together with eccentricity, passion and is carefully curated. With Mr Feather’s Den, Susan set out to create a similar experience to entering a writer’s den – one that hadn’t changed since the seventies. So books and artworks took pride of place. Mid-century pottery, dusty vintage treasures and previously loved pieces, and colourful retro lamps and lampshades, which have come to be a signature offering of the Den, took up the rest of the space.

Susan came from a communications, marketing and public relations background and has worked in a number of industries. Always creative, Susan started in the music sector in promotions and worked with the company’s key stars (of that era), Iggy Pop, Alan Parsons, John Rowles and Kate Bush, to name a few. A talent for being in places at interesting times, Susan was hired as Richard Prebble’s press secretary just after the 2002 election when ACT had nine seats. “I figured I’d never been involved in politics and was overseas during the Labour Government’s Rogernomics era so I could be quite arbitrary about working for ACT. It turned out to be one of the very best places I have worked.” Next challenge turned out to be the investment industry and Susan was in crisis control mode at the time of the Global Financial Crisis. “It was an incredibly harsh time but the New Zealand-based company I worked for needed to separate itself from the subprime mortgage debacle that many other foreign-owned companies had been embroiled with. “ As an artist and stylist, Susan set about surrounding herself with beautiful things to sell in Mr Feather’s Den. The shop is artistically decorated in bunting made from vintage book covers and Mrs Beeton’s written recipes on the walls. Everything is meaningful. Susan takes pride in supporting local artists and has a range of jewellery and prints in store.

Geraldine Inder School of Dance and Drama

Lansdowne House KADIA MERRALLS

NICOLA MADDEN

Mother & daughter pass on their love of dance As I arrive to interview Nicola, I have the pleasure of watching her finish teaching a couple an intricate dance – they are completely new to ballroom. It’s for an upcoming fundraising evening for Pukaha Mount Bruce. In true ‘Dancing with the Stars’ style, these two novices will be dancing for the public in a couple of weeks. It looks a little stressful, but very, very fun. In 1984, Nicola came back to teach at her Mum’s dancing school, Geraldine Inder School of Dance, which is about to enter its seventieth year. Geraldine, is very well known locally, nationally and internationally, and has been awarded the Queen Service Medal for dance and the Civic Award for Community Service. Nicola is following closely in her footsteps. Dancing since the age of four, Nicola recalls refusing to dance until her Mum bought her the correct uniform. Since then Nicola has mastered virtually every form of dance possible, from ballroom dancing, ballet and ‘fancy dancing’ (tap dancing) through to hip hop, jazz, and

contemporary dance. A little like a fish being unaware its in water, Nicola has never really known – or wanted to know – anything different from a life of dancing. Nicola auditioned for the New Zealand School of Dance straight out of high school, and entered their three-year tertiary education teacher training programme. She has danced for the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company and is currently the artistic director of the New Zealand Association of Modern Dancing, among many other things. Nicola originally came back to support her parents because her Dad was ill and her Mum needed help at the dancing school and at home. But it is her passion for teaching and dancing that has kept her here, several decades later. “I love to pass on the joy of dance,” she says, adding, “I love to make a difference to people, and dancing does that”. Nicola and her team of qualified teachers deliver 70 classes of all forms of dance to people of all ages. Nicola is passionate about getting young people involved in classical ballet and dance in general, citing the benefits to their memory, co-ordination, posture and confidence. “We love making our students feel worthy and helping them to grow in confidence. We are a traditional school that holds traditional values. We like to create disciplined, thinking dancers,” she says. Nicola is enthusiastic about the community events she is supporting and the school’s upcoming production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Kadia Merralls comments on 15 years at Lansdowne House... “Perfection is non negotiable!” Anyone who has worked in hospitality will tell you it is one of the hardest businesses to be in. Starting in hospitality while at university, Kadia later owned a recruitment company for 20 years. Buying Lansdowne House 15 years ago was motivated by a desire to build on past experience and to offer the best possible comprehensive service to those getting married or celebrating a special occasion. To achieve this goal meticulous attention to detail was paramount. “Whether it is a wedding for 120 guests or a soirée dinner for eight, nothing can be forgotten.” Kadia recognises the importance of getting to know her clients and finding out what they would like on their special day. From there she designs a personalised menu making sure dietary options and special preferences are catered for. Colour choices for table settings, flowers, special themes along with music and the cake are all discussed. Nothing is left to chance. Lansdowne House is fully licensed so Kadia advises how best to make the budget work so as to avoid wastage or half-empty bottles left on tables. When planning a wedding she meets the wedding couple several times making sure they feel completely at

ease with all the arrangements. Kadia and her team have hosted an enormous variety of weddings and functions, everything from large summer extravaganzas to intimate winter weddings in front of a roaring open fire. Birthdays from 21 years to 90 years, wedding anniversaries, company promotions, monthly dinner groups and conferences are all regular events. While not a restaurant as such, Lansdowne House does open to the public for a celebratory lunch on the last Sunday of every season giving the public a chance to taste their food and experience the unique atmosphere of Lansdowne House. The next one is their Autumn Banquet on Sunday, May, 27th. Hospitality involves long hours, early mornings and late nights but if the end result is happy clients singing the praises of Lansdowne House, the fabulous food and the wonderfully caring staff, then it makes it all worthwhile! As Ingrid and Matt said recently after their Saturday wedding and Sunday brunch for 46 “everything was perfect”. That puts a smile on Kadia’s face! Kadia invites you to view their website www.lansdownehouse.co.nz & FB, phone (06) 3782097 or email lansdownehouse@xtra.co.nz and book now for Sunday, 27 May, lunch.

Lavish looking forward to renovating new Salon Just a year after opening in the centre of Carterton, Carla Montgomerie and Lavish Hair Design are on the move again - just a few hundred metres north of the salon’s present address. Carla opened Lavish three years ago, working from her home salon while raising two young children, Blake and Lucy, with husband Richard. Twelve months ago Carla and Richard opened their present salon in Carterton’s CBD, adding six staff over the past year. The new salon will be superior, Carla says. “We will be able to accommodate more room for the growing business with 11 styling stations instead of the present six.” But for Carla the move is also about wanting to work in a fresh, modern environment which she will be creating from scratch over the next couple of months, in time to open in August. Along with new premises, Carla has just made Senior Stylist Hannah Clark her 2IC. “We are a very busy salon and the time had come to create this position. Hannah is perfect for the role.” The other members of the team are First Year Apprentice Larissa Gates, Senior Stylist Brenda Dittmer, Hairstylist Vanessa Carson, and Assistants to the Stylists Abby Cooper and Charlotte Smith.

One of the features of the new-look Lavish which Carla is excited about, will be its exclusive area - “The Wedding Room.”

“We have a fabulous team. They all take pride in their work and they all have a friendly personal manner. A lot of people tell us they love our atmosphere.”

“We are Wedding Specialist’s and I want to create something exceptional. A lot of bride’s have trial up-dos leading up to their wedding day and this is where the “Wedding Room” will be perfect, and also for their big day.

Carla is currently looking for an eighth person to join Lavish who can be a Third Year Apprentice up to Senior Stylist.

“It’s a special time of your life when you get married, and we are all about making bridal parties look and feel 100 per cent amazing for

“We also travel for weddings as far as Wellington and Palmerston North. We do a lot of coastal weddings around Wairarapa too. “ Lavish stocks NAK retail products short for Natural Australian Kulture - which are Paraben and Sulphate free. Nak has chosen the salon to be exclusive stockists of their products in Wairarapa, which Carla is especially proud of.

“The address for our new Salon will be 57-61 High Street North Carterton. The entrance will be from the main road. For now we will still be working in our present salon and will inform everyone when we do move. “We want to thank all our Lavish clients for your on-going support. We can’t wait, and look forward to sharing our new salon with everyone. We hope to be in the new salon in early August.

Carla points out that the team at Lavish are able to fulfil the hair needs of all women, men and children.

Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton

Lansdowne Private Childcare

MARIA MAJBORODA

TONI DEVENNY

On top of the finances, among other things

A leader in early childhood care and education

Maria Majboroda is the financial controller at Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton, so essentially, she is the money woman. But that isn’t the only string to her bow. With the help of her wonderful team (Julane, Cherie and Holly), she also juggles the technology for the company and all the other administration type functions of Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton. Admiring the view of everyone hard at work from her office, Maria chats about what a wonderful place Mitre 10 MEGA is to work, and how lucky she feels to have landed the perfect job, right here in Masterton, 11 years ago. “It was almost as if fate intervened that day. “I had just sent in my CV to a recruitment agency at the exact same time Mitre 10 MEGA had sent in the job requirements for this role,” she says. Originally expecting to have to commute to Wellington for a position of this calibre, she was thrilled to be successful in getting the position and become part of the Mitre 10 MEGA family. Maria enjoys the variety of the role, saying she gets to be involved in many different

aspects of the business from marketing and communications through to IT. One of Maria’s favourite projects was helping to get the new MEGA store up and running. From start to finish the project took just six months. She also enjoys the community projects she is involved in through Mitre 10 MEGA, in particular, LifeFlight. Originally from a very strong corporate background, including six years experience in commercial accounting in Sydney, Maria loves that Mitre 10 MEGA is run as a family business where you feel not only part of a team, but part of the family. “No job is too small for anyone here from the owners right through to any one of the staff members. “For example, at Christmas we all roll our sleeves up to help on the shop floor to make sure none of our wonderful customers have to wait in line for too long”.

From foundations to fenceline, you can get the whole job done with Mitre 10 MEGA

Lansdowne Private Childcare and PreSchool has now been in operation 25 years and is a leader in its field. Toni Devenny remembers when she first opened as the first private childcare facility in Wairarapa. “When we first started there was hardly anyone doing what we were doing. Now it’s a thriving industry, which is great for Wairarapa,” she says. The centre has been around long enough to see generational change. “We have children’s children coming to our centre now. It’s lovely to see everyone grow and develop. We build relationships with these families. It’s a big move putting your child in someone else’s care. We take that seriously,” says Toni. Absolutely focused on putting children first and allowing them to develop at their own pace, Toni says that they

have guidelines and structure in place. However for the most part they like to let the children lead the way in their own development. “This is their last chance for a while to learn at an unhurried pace. Soon enough they will be in a busy school environment. We focus on creating a nurturing and loving space for them here to explore their own interests and be creative,” she says. The centre is split into two age ranges; up to two and a half years old, and from two and a half until they leave for school. This allows each age group to have their own space and maximise their ability to learn and grow. “In the nursery it is more about nurturing and routine with a focus first and foremost on care. For the older children it is about learning and growing – including socially – and getting ready for school,” says Toni. Toni has a nursing background that helps her with the children and, no doubt, provides extra reassurance to the parents. The centre grew out of Toni’s passion for early childhood development. Before the centre opened, when Toni was looking after her own children at home, she would help out other parents. Soon enough the need grew to a point where she decided to consider opening a centre. Twenty-five years later, Lansdowne Private Childcare is thriving. No doubt the grandchildren of the children that first attended 25 years ago will also attend here in another 25 years.

Offering High Quality Care and Education in a Nurturing Environment • We have a specialised nursery for babies and toddlers. • Our Pre School Centre focuses on preparing children to become lifelong learners. • 20 Hours ECE Subsidy for all 3 and 4 year old children. • Spacious indoor/outdoor play areas.

VISION STATEMENT ‘To nurture and support our children to grow and learn through their preschool years at an unhurried pace’ Full time, part time or casual vacancies – 0 to 5 years. Registered qualified and experienced teachers. Inspection welcome.

Gary Pickering Funerals is one of Wairarapa’s best known and most loved funeral homes. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere is matched by the lovely and charming Adelaide Percy. Originally from Wairarapa, Adelaide had been studying to be a paramedic in Auckland until a few years ago. It was while working as a paramedic that she realised she had a natural talent and empathy for helping friends and family dealing with the death of a loved one. When she came back to Wairarapa she was lucky enough to get her new dream job at Gary Pickering Funerals and has now been in the industry three years.

As Adelaide says, “I can’t make it better, but I can make it easier”. Refreshingly honest, Adelaide acknowledges it will be an absolutely “rubbish” time for the family. She does her best to help work through the necessary details and decisions, and to think of things they perhaps wouldn’t have otherwise thought of. She loves thinking of the little things that will stick in people’s memories and make the funeral a meaningful experience. For example, swapping the hearse for a truck or incorporating a favourite scent into a funeral, such as lavender. Adelaide, a qualified embalmer, takes care of all the clinical details behind the scenes and makes sure the family only needs to deal with the important things – such as getting everyone to the funeral, gathering up the family photos, and allowing time to be sad. Adelaide knows she’s done her job well when she gets a big hug at the end of the day. Clearly this is Adelaide’s lifetime calling and she enjoys her life here in Wairarapa with partner, Josh, and their pets.

It might seem unusual to consider being a funeral director a dream job, but the pride Adelaide takes in helping families through such difficult times is evident in everything she does.

17 Blonde

Natural Therapy Options

JANET WILLIAMS DEBBIE LEWIS AND LIANNE HARPHAM

A Dynamic Duo who love Linen 17blonde is a beautiful, sustainable and ethical linen clothing range developed by two best friends – Debbie Lewis and Lianne Harpham. Debbie was one of Lianne’s best customers in her retail store (Scarlet, in Martinborough). The two built a great friendship over a glass (or several) of wine. Their conversations soon turned to their love of natural fibres, and linen, in particular. Debbie is from within the corporate world, so brings the managerial capabilities and Lianne brings the creative flair. Launching just mid last year the brand is growing and going from strength to strength. So is their friendship, which they both agreed at the start couldn’t be affected by their new business. “Now it just means we’re usually checking design quality and choosing fabric samples during our wine catch-ups!” quips Lianne. They both love to bust myths about linen. “Everyone thinks you have to iron linen, but you don’t. It’s not supposed to look

perfectly ironed. The soft rumples give linen it’s natural charm,” says Lianne. They go on to passionately describe the many other benefits of linen including it’s freshness and breathability - linen is warm in winter and cool in summer - and layers up well with other natural fibres (such as bamboo, merino or organic cotton) to be worn year round. Linen actually gets better with every wash and wear and is very sustainable making it the perfect antidote to ‘fast fashion’. Its origins are from the flax plant so can be returned to the soil, breaking down entirely (in compost) within nine months. Locally focused, the 17blonde range is lovingly made by a small team in Wellington with Debbie and Lianne very much hands-on throughout the process. 17Blonde is an online business available at www.17blonde.co.nz. At the moment it is also stocked in Scarlet, Martinborough, but excitedly the girls say that plans are under way for their own store.

Bring Relief with the Buteyko Breathing Method A Natural Health Therapist for 22 years, Janet Williams first began in the field of massage and later began working with Bowen Therapy. Since then, Janet’s skills have expanded to include a range of treatments, most recently including the Buteyko Breathing Method in her skillset, after one of her client’s recommended it. After researching and trying it out herself, with a lot of success, Janet trained to become qualified in teaching Buteyko Breathing classes. Janet’s business has grown to accommodate the additional services and larger premises and is now ‘Natural Therapy Options’ in Bannister Street, Masterton. Janet was trained by Patrick McKeown in Sydney. Patrick McKeown, a worldrenowned speaker and instructor of Buteyko Breathing, was taught by Dr Buteyko who developed this method. Buteyko Breathing has been known to improve asthma symptoms, snoring, sleep apnoea, breathlessness, tightness in the chest, stress, anxiety, poor concentration, fatigue, insomnia, sinusitis and headaches. It is also a useful tool for optimising general health, for instance, improving sports performance. Janet describes Buteyko as “a course in breathing lessons of 1 ½ hrs each over 4

weeks. You get to understand how your breathing affects your body systems and what you need to do to help yourself. Clients have exercises they do at home and they are also shown how to monitor their progress and improvement,” says Janet. One of Janet’s clients had not been able to breathe through her nose for more than 30 years before taking the course. “My nose was always blocked, no matter what I tried. Even the specialist overseas said that I would never be able to breathe through my nose because the nose canal was too narrow,” says the client. “I was tired all the time and at times got stressed out and had the odd panic attack. I often suffered from indigestion, hay fever, allergies and asthma. Janet gave me some exercises and imagine my surprise when it worked!”. Her client couldn’t be more thrilled with the results, going on to say “I feel much better, have lots more energy, breathe through my nose, my bad hay fever symptoms have disappeared and I haven’t had an asthma attack since.” Janet gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping her clients improve their lives through these techniques, saying “I couldn’t be more happy to see clients walking out the door with great results”.

Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union CATHERINE ROSSITER-STEAD, STACEY PUDDY, BECKS SAYER

Kicking goals for Women in Rugby Stacey Puddy has been in the role just over a year, but has already made an impact. Her role is now Community Rugby Manager which covers Junior All Blacks, the Senior Club and Heartland. Originally the role was Junior Development Manager, but she’s added responsibilities over the year, including managing bookings for Memorial Park, organising awards dinners and the grounds themselves. Stacey clearly doesn’t like to be anything other than busy. “It’s great that I’ve been given the opportunity to take on additional roles and responsibilities in what has been a fast-paced and challenging, but enjoyable, year,” she says. Stacey has always loved rugby. Following her brother around the rugby fields from an early age. “I remember being at his JAB games virtually from day dot. And then following him through the Wairarapa College First Fifteen through to the Club and Heartland rugby,” she says. But originally, Stacey was from a very different background. Her prior roles were within the hospitality, most recently as a chef tutor. “It was quite a change for me, but one I’ve really enjoyed,” she says. “I love that everyone has a different perspective and opinion on rugby. But at the end of the day, despite all the different views, they all have one common passion – rugby. They have one common goal of ensuring everyone has the most fun possible and gets in and enjoys it. Of course once you get to the senior grades, it’s more about winning, but everyone still has a great time doing it.” Stacey has also enjoyed working with a wide variety of people of different ages. In particular, Stacey credits her boss and mentor, Tony Hargood. “He has been

amazing, really fantastic. He’s been so helpful to me and has gone out of his way to help develop me as a person,” she says. “I feel like he took a chance on me when he first hired me and he’s let me really grow into the role and allowed me to make it what it is today.” While Stacey admits that working in a male-dominated industry, and occasionally she has had to put her foot down, for the most part she has been met with respect and cooperation. “Everyone has been amazing towards me. I never had to feel ‘different’ just because I was a female. I think I bring a nice balance to the team,” she says. “At the end of the day we are all here to achieve the same results for Wairarapa rugby. There is a real meeting of the minds about what we want to achieve.” She also notes that there are many women behind the scenes preparing the after

match meals, as JAB team managers, 1stXV physios and club administrators. In particular, Stacey has been inspired by two female board members – Catherine Rossiter-Stead and Becks Sayer. “Becks and Catherine have been very supportive and encouraging. I heard Catherine speak recently about what it is like to be a woman in the world of rugby, and I was so inspired by her words. They’ve both really helped me feel confident,” says Stacey. Catherine has been involved in rugby for 30 years and says, “it’s fantastic to see the changes that are taking place, with more women now involved in the game and a higher profile for women’s sport in general across New Zealand”. Becks was brought on to the board for her accountancy expertise. “I enjoy being involved in projects that bring communities together, and rugby certainly does that,” she says.

Stacey is also very excited about supporting women playing rugby at all levels. A new development in the sport is likely to encourage younger girls to continue playing longer, and at higher levels. Designed to help children transition from Ripper Rugby to tackle rugby, a new form of rugby, called ‘Quick Rip’ is being implemented. In Quick Rip you have a scrum and line outs, just like you do in junior tackle rugby, but there isn’t actual physical tackling yet. So it gives children the chance to continue developing their rugby skills while transitioning to tackling. “Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union is looking to encourage more women to be on a pathway within rugby through playing, coaching or management. It is exciting times for all,” says Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union CEO, Tony Hargood.

MOIRA ROBERTSON-BROWN

Thrilled to be back in the riding seat Moira has always been very goal-driven. From age 15 she wanted a farm to keep her horse. That goal required a good job and she was both good with numbers and science. After her science teacher put her off science, Moira decided to focus on economics and accounting. “I soon found out I loved accounting. I’m fascinated by numbers. Luckily I bought a farm for my horse at Wainuioru by age 25, achieving my goal,” says Moira. Originally an auditor at Price Waterhouse Coopers, a prestigious accounting firm in Wellington, Moira has had a very successful career, working in a variety of areas and different organisations. Moira also enjoys the accompanying elements of accounting such as human resources and commercial law. “I love the variety of accounting. Accountants have the stigma of being boring attached to them, but it’s a more interesting and varied role than people might realise,” says Moira. Moira first bought into her own practice in 2005 and has been in business on her own or in merged ventures ever since. In 2015 Moira became part-owner and manager of NUMB1Z and is now full owner. Moira is supported by “an amazing team”, including Senior Accountant Sue Mangin who has worked in the office for 19 years, Senior Accountant Paddy Emerson who joined the

accountancy firm 15 years ago, Intermediate Accountant Ali de Boer, Accountant Courtney Lintern and Fiona Robertson in administration and systems. Moira is thrilled to have her own practice again. “It’s great. I like being autonomous. So having the freedom to set my own policies and procedures, make my own decisions, and work with my clients in the way I see best, suits me.” she says. “NUMB1Z provides a full-range accounting service, with an emphasis on tax compliance and aims to deliver their services quickly, effectively and at a good price,” says Moira. “People are welcome to pop in or call to have a chat about how we can help”. Recognising that clients are now able to do more of their own day-to-day book keeping, Moira intends to increase their consultancy services. “The new accounting software helps, but our clients will still need help choosing the right software and having their systems set up correctly for Inland Revenue. Other areas where clients need assistance include health and safety, and employment relations.” A book could be written about all the interesting characters and clients Moira has worked with throughout her career in private practice. “Don’t worry, I won’t. But if I did ever write a book it would be one of the most interesting books. We have so many different people and businesses whom we deal with. It’s never monotonous,” she says. “In a single business you don’t always get the variety. We love working with a wide range of interesting clients all doing interesting things”. Moira and husband, Dan, have two children and Moira still enjoys horse riding. So that decision she made back when she was 15 has worked out well.

SARAH DONALDSON & SARAH PERCY

Think, Eat, Act Tea Health and Wellbeing Consultants (TEA) has undergone a renovation of sorts in order to meet its demand for workplace wellness workshops and programmes. “The fundamentals of our philosophy, and what we teach, are still the same. But how we deliver the information has changed to accommodate the changing needs of our client base,” says Sarah Percy.

Both Sarahs abide by a ‘science first’ philosophy. “We’re not in this for the latest trend or to be on the current health bandwagon,” says Sarah Donaldson. “We are in it for the long haul. We strongly believe in giving people clarity around the huge amount of information out there. What we teach people is based on science, is evidence-based, and reliable.”

The ‘two Sarah’s’ are probably best known for their wellness retreats, workshops and individualised nutrition, health and well-being programmes. They still do that work but the emphasis of their business has shifted to emphasise workplace wellness. “Organisations are increasingly approaching us after recognising how important their staff’s health and wellbeing is to their overall productivity and retention,” says Sarah Donaldson. “There’s plenty of stats to back up that every dollar you invest in your team’s health and wellbeing comes back to you several fold in reduced absenteeism and turnover and increased productivity.”

As well as the workplace wellness focus, and the individualised work the pair continue to do, a third arm of the business is rural health. Sarah Donaldson is the Wellness Co-ordinator for the East Coast Rural Support Trust, which has led to TEA’s profile increasing in the rural sector, and they are now often approached to be involved in rural initiatives. One example is Farmstrong (a national initiative to improve the health of the farming community), TEA provided content and videos to support their social media programme. They are also regularly invited to speak at rural engagements throughout the country. “It’s essentially teaching the same information, but tailored to suit the rural industry”, says Sarah Donaldson.

The pair have been asked to deliver tailored workplace wellness training for several well-recognised national organisations as well as deliver in-house workplace assessments. “We can either tailor in-house programmes entirely based around workplace wellness or we can slot into an in-house strategy session, for example, to provide an engaging, stand-alone health and wellness workshop in addition to other topics the are being presented”, says Sarah Percy.

When ‘the two Sarahs’ met at their children’s music class just a few years ago, I wonder whether they could have dreamed just how big this could be as they talked about their complementary skillsets and how they wished they were the ambulance at the top, instead of the bottom, of the hill. It’s easy to see that it will only get better – and busier – from here.

Wairarapa Osteopathy

JANE BURNS (B.APP.SC/B.OST.SC)

MAZ CHARLES

Carterton Osteopathy is now Wairarapa Osteopathy

A role with heart

Carterton Osteopathy has undergone a brand refresh because they are no longer just in Carterton. Jane runs her practice in Carterton but she has two other part-time osteopaths who are now operating out of Masterton and Carterton. So the name Wairarapa Osteopathy is fitting, because they are the only osteopaths in town and now operate region-wide. Jane had her own practice in Wellington before she moved with her partner to Wairarapa. “We moved here for the lifestyle. We were about to have a second child and we wanted a great family life. Wairarapa was the logical place to come,” says Jane. When Jane first arrived she hadn’t planned to work at first. She was seven months pregnant at the time. But word soon got out that there was an osteopath in town and Jane began taking appointments in her home office to meet demand. Almost as soon as her Carterton clinic

was established, it became clear that there was a need for a second clinic in Masterton. Jane took on two part-time staff, Clemintine Carnus (B.App.Sc./M. Ost) and Islay Robertson (M.Ost., B.App.Sc (HumanBiol), B.Sc. (Biochem and Genetics). “It was fantastic to find highly qualified, experienced and like-minded people with a similar philosophy and approach to mine. I was confident our clients would be really happy,” says Jane. Osteopathy, and Jane’s passion, is about getting people’s bodies working in a more optimum way. “It’s gentle, and focused on alignment. We have different techniques to treat different issues. It’s incredibly effective. Sometimes it might not seem like we’ve done much, but our clients can definitely tell the difference’ says Jane. “It’s a bit like being a detective, working out what has happened in the body so we can solve the problem as quickly as possible. We work with people throughout their lifespan, making sure they can keep doing what they enjoy doing.” Osteopaths train for five years to qualify. In addition to that, Jane has done further post-graduate study on treating babies and mothers during pregnancy. The practice is ACC registered and is also registered under the Health Practitioners Assurance Act. To keep herself in good working order and to balance the demands of being a busy Mum and businesswoman, Jane does yoga and enjoys a date night with her husband or night out with friends. “We love living here. The kids love it. It’s such a great lifestyle for all of us,” says Jane.

Maz joined Rosewood Funeral Home (formerly David Dew Funeral Services) in January of last year. Maz is new to Wairarapa, having worked as a funeral director in the Hutt Valley most recently, and previously in Palmerston North. “I prefer being in a provincial town, the lifestyle suits my daughter and I ” says Maz. Maz knew she wanted to be a funeral director from the age of 21. “When I was younger I knew I did not have the emotional maturity, but funeral directing was always something I wanted to do,” she says.

director becomes part of who you are and underlies how you operate in life”. Funeral directors are skilled in coordinating a very special event in a short time, a wedding takes months. We create a special gathering in only a few days. My role as a funeral director involves meeting people with different beliefs and needs. I have to be open, flexible, and able to coordinate families’ wishes. Attention to detail is a must from delivering photo memories, publishing service sheets, co-ordinating bookings with cemeteries, crematoriums, and caterers and all the while spending time with the families to ensure the funeral will honour not only the deceased’s life but respects the wishes of people who are still living.

Eventually, in a moment of serendipity, Maz met a funeral director in Palmerston North who had a well-established funeral home, discovering there was a position available she made the transition into the funeral industry.

Maz also describes how, for her, being a funeral director, is more than being empathetic or sympathetic. She says it’s “part of who you are” and talks about the enjoyment of living in a provincial area where you get to have direct contact with the families rather in the city where people were just numbers, “I love being a funeral director especially in Wairarapa.

She admits she was thrown in the deep end learning embalming and funeral directing, but soon found her feet under the guidance of her mentor.

I love talking to people, finding out who they are, and assisting them through one of the most challenging times of their life,” says Maz.

“The best piece of advice he ever gave me was that if funeral directing ever becomes a ‘chore’ then it’s time to find another vocation.” Maz says” that being a funeral

Love You and Me

Taverner Keys & Co

JO PARKER

What makes you tick? Love You and Me is a new business delivering personal development workshops and providing coaching services. Principal coach, Jo Parker, started the business out of a passion for understanding people. “I’ve always been fascinated with getting to know what makes people tick,” says Jo. “I also love helping people feel more confident and helping them discover what they really want out of life”. Originally from a business background, Jo took the opportunity to indulge her interest in psychology when she completed a graduate diploma in psychology in 2016. Jo couldn’t be more excited about her new business. “This has always been my dream. I enjoy business, and everything I’ve done in the past helps me with the work I do now. “But it’s the ‘life’ side of what I do now that I love”, she says. Jo identified the need for helping people, women in particular, with their confidence. “I’ve worked with people in their businesses before and during conversation, it became clear, that it was a lack of confidence that was the real issue rather than a lack of knowledge”, says Jo. “Jo amazes me”, says Tessa who has worked with and for Jo over the past few years. “She is constantly buzzing and thinking, her enthusiasm for life is infectious!

CHRISTIN SCHETTER AND PENNY ELLIOTT “I used to be so scared to talk to anyone, I would hide in the toilet at school,” she says. With the help of books and lots of practice, Jo increasingly became more and more confident. Jo is running workshops about confidence in Palmerston North and Wellington and already has great feedback on her first workshop, which focused on confidence in dating. “The participants said they felt like different people after the workshop more relaxed and comfortable in the dating world. I was thrilled with that result.” The other area Jo focuses on is helping people find their purpose; either finding more purpose in their current life, or figuring out what their bigger purpose is, and navigating a way there. “I’m a big believer that you only have one life and you really have to do brave and do what you really want with it,” she says.

“Jo is one of those people who make you feel great, she really is a natural at coaching and inspiring – with her help, I now totally believe in myself and that nothing I want to achieve is out of reach”. It’s hard to believe, but Jo used to be incredibly shy and had to learn to be confident.

Female flair for Carterton law firm In 2016, Penny began thinking carefully about developing her career. She approached Barry Keys as a wellrespected and much liked lawyer in Carterton - and Penny and Barry decided that their legal expertise and practices would complement each other. Penny joined Taverner Keys & Co on 3 July 2017 – almost exactly 55 years to the day since Barry first started working with Mr Taverner on 2 July 1962. Penny and Barry have successfully worked towards partnership and Taverner Keys & Co is excited to announce that as of 1 June 2018 Penny will become Barry’s Partner. To complement Barry’s 55 years of practice in Carterton at Taverner Keys, Penny brings her expertise from the past 10 years practicing as a solicitor in the Greytown area. Previous to that, she had a childhood on a Wairarapa Dry farm, experience working as an orchardist and cider maker, and worked as a manager at Carterton School. In the last issue of Women in Business we introduced Christin Schetter as a new

Staff Solicitor practicing at Taverner Keys & Co. Christin continues to increase her knowledge of the law, and with three years of experience now behind her, she is enjoying the varied work that the growth of the firm has brought. Christin has qualifications in agricultural management, and her deep knowledge of horses means that she has an understanding of issues surrounding agricultural businesses. The agricultural, horticultural and cider making experiences of Penny and Christin mean that they understand the issues surrounding these industries that are so important and central to our local communities and this informs the legal advice that they can provide. Taverner Keys is looking forward to the future, where it will continue to offer a friendly and personal service.

Back in Action MARYANNE MONASTRA

A Hubb of Business and Health Activity BACK IN ACTION Maryanne Monastra is the managing director at Back in Action. Along with her husband, Ryan Monastra (of The Hubb), Maryanne owns and runs Back in Action which is made up of two clinics located in Carterton (with an additional room down the road at Carterton Medical) and Masterton. Maryanne is from a nursing background, so has always been part of the health industry. But as Back in Action has grown in size, Maryanne’s role is now very much one of managing a large and ever-growing business. “We’ve really grown from the days, seven years ago, when it was just Ryan in our room at Carterton Medical and I took appointment calls from home with three young children at my ankles! We now share this business journey with knowledgeable and experienced clinicians and a dedicated, helpful customer care team who also happen to be a great bunch of people to do life with!” says Maryanne. Maryanne has had to learn all aspects of a growing business and has developed a great amount of knowledge in areas such as website design, social media, and marketing. The experience in business over the last 7.5yrs also prompted Maryanne to set up a new website-based service ‘in her spare time’ to meet a niche demand for physiotherapists looking for work – employers looking for physiotherapists advertise there – www.myphysiojob.nz. Maryanne loves her team of 19 and says she couldn’t do her job without them. “We have an absolutely amazing team, of which 13 are women, and everyone plays their part beautifully. From our cleaner, Faye, who keeps everything immaculate, to the dedicated clinicians and the friendly team at the front desk” she says. Judy, Ange and Zoe are the welcoming and hard working customer care and administration team. Kim and Deb are the wonderful pilates

Absent: Kim Hewson, Deb Davidson, Ange Kalogeropoulos, Faye Rophia, Gayle Snyders, Vicky Paine, Katie-Anne Saywell team; Vicky and Katie-Anne are the inhouse massage therapists. The combined experience and specialties of the female physiotherapy team are particularly standout. One of the Staff Physios, Baylee Tebby, is completing PINC and STEEL certification to be able to provide cancer rehabilitation physiotherapy for men and women diagnosed with cancer. Gayle Snyders, Senior Physio, is trained in the area of Cranio Sacral therapy and Visceral Manipulation – a highly specialised area of physiotherapy. Staff Physio, Anita Zwart is particularly interested in pediatric and sports/dance related injuries. Also a RAD qualified dance teacher, Anita carries out Pre-Pointe Assessments and NZSD Orthopaedic Assessments in clinic. Staff Physio, Megan Beard, has a keen interest in woman’s health and sport having worked with top sports teams in hockey netball and Australian Football. They also have some great gentlemen working alongside them – physiotherapists, a chiropractor and an occupational health nurse. Maryanne and her team, including husband Ryan, are passionate about having a proactive health mentality. “Traditionally the public has sought our services when something goes wrong but we’re trying to turn that around and encourage a proactive approach to health and wellness. Come in for your body WOF, seek guidance on your workplace ergonomic setup, learn about

keeping active and arthritis symptoms at bay, get your running technique looked at before you start training for your first event, that sort of thing.” In 2017 Maryanne and Ryan took this concept a step further by joining forces with Kevin Rickey (an experienced personal trainer) in establishing The Hubb, a health club, on the same site as the Masterton clinic. THE HUBB HEALTH CLUB The Hubb is a gym with a difference. Focused on group training and the social side of exercise, the gym has handson experts available to ensure you’re demonstrating great technique and working towards your health and exercise goals. “The establishment of the gym has allowed us to take our clients to the next level and hand over to the Hubb team knowing they will be taken care of” says Maryanne. The Hubb directors saw the need for a gym with experienced trainers, making use of cutting edge technology and providing a supportive and encouraging environment, in purpose built facilities, to inspire their members, Back in Action clients and visitors. Pack sessions are run daily encouraging a social and group approach to fitness. Two of The Hubb ‘pack leaders’, are personal trainers Vicky and Corrina Paine. “We love working here at The Hubb,” says Corrina.

“There is such a buzz and atmosphere here. I love working in an environment where people are encouraged to enjoy exercise and establish a healthy lifestyle for a fitter healthier version of themselves” says Vicky. In sharing The Hubb gym facilities, Back In Action staff can make use of the technological capabilities of MYZONE to monitor their clients heart rate, keeping them within medical guidelines, encouraging goal setting (such as burning “X” calories per session to encourage weight loss when joints are struggling) and track effort levels during a workout or rehab session. “We also now have the luxury, by sharing this facility, of having some of the perks the health club brings such as lovely private showers, towels for hire, hair dryers and toiletries.” Says Maryanne So whether you are recuperating or just starting out on your fitness journey, Back in Action is the perfect place to start. Their team is dedicated to not only rehabilitation but injury prevention and wellness. “Not only do we want to help our clients recover from injury, we want to show them what their bodies are capable of, to encourage them to keep setting new goals and to keep moving. You only have one body, you need to make it last a lifetime!” sums up Maryanne.

The Land Girl Coffee Shop

TESSA GILLETT

ANDREA DIDSBURY

Sweet scent of success

City girl making farm life work for her

Tessa is living her dream. Her pretty store on the main street of Greytown opened in time for Christmas last year. Bath bombs, candles and other scented goodies waft out to meet you, competing with the smell of freshly baked bread from the French Baker, next door. Tessa has always wanted a store like the one she has now. Before Lush arrived in New Zealand, she enquired about a franchise - but at the time they had no plans to expand into Australasia. Life carried on and Tessa’s career took her down other avenues. Tessa spent three years in France starting a family and getting even more excited and enveloped in everything scented! After her return, she became Retail Operations Manager for The Good Mood Company, which was a great way to learn the intricate details of running a retail business. This wasn’t Tessa’s first rodeo though, as they say. She had previously been Retail Operations Manager for the successful Wishbone Brand. When The Good Mood Company closed its doors at the end of its lease last year, Tessa took on another management role which she enjoyed immensely, but she missed the buzz of retail. Tessa is a Mum of two, Louis (7) and Eva (5) are her highest priority in life. What

she wanted most of all was to be able to do something she enjoyed while being more able to manage her work around her life and kids. After much discussion and with help from friends and family, she made the big decision to open the store. The store is off to a great start and the online store is imminent. Tessa promises something new each time you visit and continues to introduce new ranges. The latest being Tilley and Royal Doulton. The store stocks other popular brands – Ethique, The Bonbon Factory, Linden Leaves and The Aromatherapy Company. Only stocking ‘cruelty free’ brands is very important to Tessa. “Everything in my store is cruelty free and tested on willing humans only,” says Tessa. I also ask my suppliers not to send stock wrapped in extra plastic or bubble wrap, if it’s damaged, I just wear the cost, most things arrive fine though”. Louis and Eva are loving having mum pick them up more often and able to attend school events. Eva is already a natural, showing people new products with a flourish of a hand. “Hopefully she’ll do the weekends for me soon,” laughs Tessa.

Andrea Didsbury, fresh back from London, fell in love with a Wairarapa farmer. “I had no idea I would end up being a farmer’s wife,” says Andrea. But she made the life work, initially commuting to Masterton to teach. Andrea has three children, now aged 7, 9, and 11. Most people dream of a shorter commute, and that was definitely what Andrea wanted too. “I needed something closer to home, so I could more fully enjoy the Pirinoa life,” says Andrea. She went above and beyond, setting up a coffee shop, The Land Girl, literally at the end of her drive two years ago. “We had the perfect spot, right in the heart of Pirinoa, across from the school, on the road to Cape Palliser,” says Andrea. At the end of the drive was the blacksmith’s workshop, built in the 1880s and handed down, with the farm, through five generations. “It was the perfect building to turn into a coffee shop and store.” “Tourists are flocking to our part of the world,” says Andrea. “It made perfect sense. The closest cafes were in Martinborough. People driving through stop off for some of the beautiful cabinet food or grab a packed lunch from the selection of salads, cakes, scones and slices on their way through to the coast.

Andrea readily admits she knows nothing about farming. But she had a hospitality background, a love of baking, and an interest in upholstery. “I’m obsessed with cooking and baking, and I love anything to do with covering stools, or anything like that,” she says. Andrea put all those elements together into a business, and The Land Girl was formed. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during summer, autumn and spring and public holidays. Andrea takes a well-deserved break and closes for the winter after Queen’s Birthday weekend until October. The business is the perfect balance of work and lifestyle. The retail side of the business has really grown with a beautiful collection of items available from beautiful clothes, scarves and handbags to neat crockery, cushion covers and gifts. The kids are loving being part of the business and are showing true entrepreneurial spirit. When they’re not enjoying a hot chocolate with their friends who stop in, they’re selling lemonade at a pop-up stall or pinecones by the bag load. They’ve even held a second-hand book sale. “Along with the farm, it is nice that the whole family can work in the business,” says Andrea.

Becker Medical Services (BMS)

Pain Management

DOCTOR CATH BECKER

JULIANNE O’DONNELL

Passionate about keeping our skin safe

Helping people to see pain differently

the patient as a whole, and their mindset and lifestyle factors,” says Julianne.

Life is a pain for around 23% of adults who experience ongoing moderate to severe pain, according to the New Zealand Medical Journal. Most resort to heavy medication to manage that pain. “It used to be that medication was the only way to manage pain, but now we can be more proactive,” says Julianne.

Most patients that come to Julianne are at the chronic pain stage. General practice doctors usually don’t have time to go into the depth of helping their patients with pain management, and this is where Julianne can help. Clients may need to get back to work or just want to get on with their life. Some of Julianne’s clients are referred from ACC, physiotherapists and GPs while others come of their own accord. For those that come of their own accord, before working with them, Julianne meets with them to learn about their situation and ascertain whether she can help.

Dr Cath Becker is a skin specialist at the top of her field. Cath does skin checks from her clinic and can treat any issues that arise thanks to a background in both general practice and surgery. “We are a one-stop shop clinic when it comes to skin,” says Cath. To keep up with high demand Cath has taken on Dr Lynette Cherry and Dr Gerard McQuinlan, in an effort to keep increasing waiting lists to a maximum of four weeks. Cath also has an excellent surgical nurse on hand to help, Janet Hodge, who has completed training in using a dermatoscope, which is a specialised skin microscope. Administrator Ange Rough, keeps everything running very smoothly behind the scenes. Keen to stay at the very cutting edge of skin cancer developments, Cath has been completing extra training in skin cancer medicine. Working her way through a self-funded Masters Degree, on top of her Doctorate, through the University of Queensland. Queensland is more commonly known in medical circles as the Skin Cancer capital. A select group

of 20 students from around the world complete this training virtually and by attending conferences on the Gold Coast. “It adds around 20 hours over and above my working week, but it’s worth it to know that I’m gaining the absolute best and latest research and knowledge in this area for my patients,” says Cath. “This is my life work,” says Cath. “It’s really important to me. I’m obsessive about finding suspicious growths or moles and removing them. Then ensuring that any surgery leaves the skin looking good, with natural symmetry.” When not in her own clinics, Cath is doing the same thing in the public hospital system as the ‘Visiting Specialist’, “even though I live here,” laughs Cath. Cath enjoys the social aspect of her job. “I love that with skin surgeries, my patients are awake, so we can chat. I learn all sorts of things,” she quips. You would wonder how on earth Cath has time to do anything else but as well as work, study and spending time with family (she has grown-up children, and her first grandchild), Cath likes to do things she “probably shouldn’t at my age”. She is training for a 130km cycle around Lake Brunner, loves road and mountainbiking (“wearing sunblock of course”) and taking part in a social knitting group, and making her own soaps and candles. She even plays the ukulele. Not surprisingly, Cath gets job offers all around the world, but as she says, “This is my home.”

Julianne doesn’t promise to remove the pain, but helps her clients to manage it better and, ideally, to see it differently. “The goal is to lead a satisfying life. While medicine certainly helps, there are other tools such as better education about pain, effective distraction and relaxation techniques, and gentle exercise or pool therapy,” she says. “Exercise can be very useful as the body produces its own endorphins which are one of the strongest pain reliefs you can get”.

Julianne focused on pain management when completing her Master of Physiotherapy and attends all the conferences on pain. “I’ve just attended a conference that has really taken pain management to the next level. It’s very exciting being able to help people cope with their pain. I can’t take it away, but I can help them make sure it’s not the overriding factor in their lives,” she says.

Julianne, who has suffered from chronic pain herself, finds the work very personally satisfying, saying “To help someone change their life around, it’s exciting”.

Serious, with a sense of humour It’s a relaxed vibe at the modern offices of Gawith Burridge. “It’s a fun place to work,” says solicitor Kylie. But Kylie and the team agree, when it’s time to work and get serious, the team certainly does that too. There is broad consensus that, while the work can be tense and serious, they don’t need to take themselves too seriously. In fact, a sense of humour is seen as a prerequisite for the job. Gawith Burridge is the biggest locally owned law firm in Wairarapa. Proud of this fact, they are a regular supporter of local community events and the team loves that. Marta, the Practice Manager, says it’s one of the first things she noticed about working at Gawith Burridge, “The team are very community-focused, supporting local charities and businesses, it’s really fantastic to be part of it.”

Kate, a solicitor who has been at the firm for just over a year now, reflects on how different it is working in a friendly team environment as opposed to the “faceless” government department she had previously worked for in Wellington. “Everyone is so lovely and friendly, it’s an entirely different, great atmosphere. You have a great sense of purpose in what you do,” she says. Helen moved here three years ago from Wellington and agrees that it’s lovely to be part of a community where you get to know your neighbours. Although Helen has previously specialised as a registered Patent Attorney, she now works in all areas of general practice. Most interestingly, she has been appointed as the firm’s AML Compliance Officer to get them up to speed for the new anti-money laundering legislation, which comes into force on July 1. Under her direction, Gawith Burridge have already implemented a number of processes in order to be ahead of the game. Associate Sonia is proud to work at Gawith Burridge, saying, “The firm has generations of clients. Our reputation is crucial to us. Sometimes people almost seem nervous to see a lawyer, but we are all ordinary people here to help our clients. We all chose to live in Wairarapa because we absolutely love it – and the people – here.”

LYNETTE FINN

Tapping into the potential for change Now into her 10th year of practice, massage therapist Lynette Finn is wondering where the time has gone. “I guess that’s what happens when you have a job that never feels like a job.” A graduate and former tutor at the New Zealand College of Massage, Lynette runs a busy practice from her Villa Street clinic and has built a diverse and loyal client base. She enjoys working in a smaller community: “It allows you to work with such a broad range of people, which I think makes you a better therapist.

It’s a privilege to do what I do and it’s extremely rewarding.

Gawith Burridge Lawyers

“You get to use all of your skills on a regular basis, making you more able to adapt to meet each person’s needs.” Lynette has continued to add disciplines to her therapeutic practice and is also qualified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Decongestive Therapy (MLD) and Dry Needling. “It’s important to continue learning and developing your knowledge and skill base,” she says, “there is no ‘one size fits all.’ People respond in different ways to different techniques and understanding that is key to achieving good results.” This year sees Lynette studying to become a certified EFT practitioner. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) commonly known as Tapping, uses a group of techniques that engage the mind-body connection. “Put simply, it is a way of relaxing around an issue, memory or event while you are working through it. I like to think of it as a way of really tapping into the potential for change.” Lynette also offers a range of affordability options, giving clients choice in their therapy. She sees a growing desire in people to take a preventative approach to their health care. “We don’t have to accept stiffness and pain as we age, or poor sleep because we lead busy and stressful lives. There are better ways. “I like working with people,” she says, “not just on people. It’s a privilege to do what I do and it’s extremely rewarding.”

RAE ANDREWS

Helping its residents live fulfilling and fun lives There is such a lovely, friendly and welcoming buzz about Carter Court Rest Home. The predominantly female workforce of around 50, provide around the clock care to the 37 equally lovely, friendly and happy residents. Carter Court’s vision is to excel at providing high quality care that is “just like home”. Rae and her highly skilled and professional team are just the people to do it. Rae has been at Carter Court for eight years now. However the role of manager is relatively new to her – she took over in July of last year. Prior to that she was responsible for Carter Court’s finance and administration, quality and health and safety co-ordination and tenancy management. With a background in these roles she was certainly well qualified and ready to step into the manager’s role when the opportunity arose. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this new role. It was a challenging step up in terms of strategic planning and anticipating trends in aged care. I am very proud of our staff and the quality of the services we provide at

JULIET GUERRERO Carter Court,” says Rae. Almost reluctant to talk about herself much, Rae credits teamwork for the success of Carter Court Rest Home. “We have a large team committed to the delivery of high quality care and ensuring the smooth running of the facility. Our Nurse Manager, Lynley Batson, is responsible for the clinical care of our residents. Lynley brings a wealth of experience and provides mentoring, leadership and guidance to the nursing team. Lynley and I work very closely together and support each other. Carter Court now provides rest home and hospital level care and as an aged care facility, the clinical role is crucial to the overall management of the rest home,” she says. Carter Court has a big place in the heart of Carterton. Originally started with the founder of Carterton, Charles Rooking Carter, who established a home for aged poor men back in 1900. In 1964 this was replaced on a new site and has seen several extensions and developments to now cater for 41 residents. Other endowments have helped over the years and more recently the Carterton District Council gifted 38 pensioner units to Carter Court. They have also received a generous legacy that enabled the development of a Retirement Village. Carter Court is a Charitable Trust and relies on the support of the kind hearts of people who leave endowments or gift their time to assist residents live full and happy lives. Many volunteers also contribute to the rest home in whatever way they can.

Tinker, trader, traveller Juliet Guerrero is one of the loveliest and most interesting people you’ll meet. She has gypsy blood, is a self-proclaimed “tinker and trader”, and loves to travel. She has successfully gathered a life and business around her of precious, beautiful and meaningful things that represent people and places. Juliet’s beautiful Casita Flora Gallery is at her home on the corner of Wyndham and Kent Streets in Carterton. Featuring all sorts of made and found objects it’s impossible not to constantly “ooh” and “aah” at each new thing you see. The star of the show is Juliet’s jewellery range, Love You Like a Sister. Wonderfully eclectic yet all fitting a theme, everything in the gallery is carefully curated based on Juliet’s love of colour and texture. “I’ve always been smitten with beautiful things since I was a child. My mother had beautiful things around us – wooden chests, baskets, throws and interesting cushions,” says Juliet. She also credits her mother for her love and affinity for gardening. Juliet’s love of travel has touched every

part of her life and business. Travelling alone or with others (it didn’t really matter), and partly funded by working on cruise ships, she went places others might consider intrepid. “The first place I feel the heartbeat of a town, city or country, is in its artisan markets,” she says. “I love the currency of trading – of buying something and moving it on. I collect and gather art and beautiful things that reflect the cultures of where I go”. She travelled extensively through Latin America with her husband, Marvin Guerrero, who is from Honduras. There, Juliet sources a lot of the materials to make her jewellery, including semiprecious stones, ceramic, resin, marble, glass, clay wood and bone. Each piece is unique. Even the garden at the gallery is special – and open to the public on occasion. Casita Flora Homestay was converted from the old TAB building at 19 Park Road, Carterton. Casita Flora, means, “little house of flowers”. It’s super cute and cosy with a beautiful courtyard garden full of pots. Latin American in feel, and packed full of gorgeous things Juliet has collected. Juliet and Marvin also have a café in Masterton called “Don Luciano”, named after Marvin’s grandfather who was a coffee grower in rural Honduras. Juliet manages the finances and administration functions for the café, proving just how versatile she can be!

Vicki Matthews Design

Blossom Beauty JASMINE

Bringing beauty to Featherston offering tattoo laser removal VICKI MATTHEWS

Returning to her true love Vicki Matthews has had a wonderful and interesting life. She is excited to be back to one of her true creative loves, design; or more specifically, interior design project management. “I have always loved design. I’m so excited about going back to it,” says Vicki. “In everything I’ve ever done, there is always an element of design. I love to make things beautiful, whether it’s making a cup of tea for my daughter with special teacups or renovating a client’s home.” While Vicki has always had her “hand in” something creatively, she has had some varied roles that have all helped bring her to where she is now. For example, she ran the Red Cross for 18 years up until two years ago when she retired. She has also always been a floral designer and still owns a commercial fishing business with her husband. “Many years ago” Vicki trained as an interior designer and has always kept her skills up to date. For example, Vicki has also developed properties, renovating and upgrading them for sale or as a rental property. The property development work has given her a real knack of knowing how and where to add value to a property, which is crucial when doing

interior design work for her clients. “I like to ensure every dollar is well spent and I like working with people no matter what their budget,” she says. “Whether the budget is small or large, I make the absolute most of it.” Vicki also has great relationships with people within the industry so can get things done very well, on time and on budget.

Jasmine loves being in business in Featherston, I felt drawn in by the town. “I always knew I wanted to open my business here. It’s such an up-and-coming community and I love that I can offer such an amazing service. In which the locals have been incredibly supportive of Blossom Beauty…

“I can walk into a place or space and see its potential; where money should be spent and where it doesn’t need to be spent,” she says. One of Vicki’s strengths is her combination of “beautiful and practical”. Describing her personal style as “classic industrial with a twist of wow”, Vicki is happy to turn her hand to anyone’s style. “People get stuck and don’t know where to start. Or perhaps they’ve started and then got stuck and don’t know where to go next. That’s where I can be of real help,” she says. Vicki wants to make interior design approachable for everyone, even if it’s as simple as getting a one-hour consultation for ideas or whipping up a ‘mood board’.

Seeing the opportunity to expand an “upand-coming cool community”, Blossom Beauty has been operating for up to three years now. “I had always wanted to be self-employed, demonstrating drive and passion, I love the independence and flexibility that comes with being a business owner. “I enjoy being able to make my own decisions regarding services and to be able to look after my clients to the best of my abilities and my own high standards.

Vicki particularly loves renovating old houses and has done many new builds. Her most recent projects have been a bach and an art deco house. “I love the variety my work brings me,” says Vicki. “It’s something new every day.”

Blossom Beauty has recently advanced into tattoo laser removal. Now specialising in the full removal of all unwanted tattoos, following a strict protocol using a safe high energy light beam that pulsates, “shattering” the ink fragments in the tattoo. “What people think is a good idea in their twenties isn’t necessarily the case in their forties!” The service removes up to 95% of the tattoo making a big difference to how people feel about themselves.

Vicki credits her Italian mother for her sense of style. “My mother was a window designer, doing window dressings, so I’ve been steeped in design from an early age,” she says. In a lovely full circle moment, Vicki’s daughter, Danielle from Hebe also featured in Women in Business, also credits her genetics for her own sense of style. So clearly, style is hereditary.

Blossom Beauty wants to help people look and feel the very best they can, whether it’s removing a tattoo, applying false eyelashes, getting a pamper package, massage or a spray tan. Blossom Beauty offers a wide range of beauty services to suit your individual needs. Blossom Beauty has created a variety of services to indulge, relax and unwind.

The Dragon Inn

Avantiplus

JOANNA & MIKE HOWARD

Giving pleasure to people through food, wine and music Joanna Howard, along with husband Mike, moved to New Zealand 30 years ago to set up home here. Their most recent endeavour has brought them to their hometown, Featherston. Dragon Inn is a small Welsh tapas bar in the main street of Featherston. “We love giving pleasure to people through food, wine and music,” says owner, Joanna, or Jo. The menu includes a lot of the couple’s Welsh favourites such as their most popular dish, ‘Faggots and Peas’ which are meatballs in gravy and plenty of other dishes – or “Taffas” with Welsh heritage. The pub is designed to be fun. There is an open mic night on Wednesday nights and a piano Jo says anyone is welcome to play. The pair know the recipe for success after a string of other successful ventures. Prior to the Dragon Inn’s opening, they had a successful Welsh restaurant in Wellington – first in Island Bay - called Scorpio’s Welsh Restaurant then in Courtney Place - called Welsh Dragon Bar. “We loved the atmosphere, especially on special occasions,” says Jo. They successfully hosted groups and fans for two Lions tours and the Rugby World Cup tour. “It was very hard work – we were sometimes

cooking 60 meals a night. But it was all really good fun and we made wonderful lifelong friends.” Jo laughs remembering that they had thought opening a pub “would be a bit easier”. The biggest drawcard was being able to do something in their hometown where they have lived for the past 13 years. “We decided Featherston needed a local pub, and we were the people to bring it to them,” says Jo. Dragon Inn is more of a wine bar than a café, but Jo acknowledges it can be hard to get the locals out at night. So they offer a popular Sunday roast from 1pm on the first Sunday of each month. Keen to be involved in local community events, Dragon Inn will have hosted a Pink Ribbon breakfast to raise money for breast cancer on Sunday, May 27. A quiz night will also be starting on Sundays. If Jo, along with Mike, are hosting and running this business, there is every chance it will do very, very well. As Jo says “We hope that the success we have had with our previous businesses will follow us to the Wonderful Wairarapa for everyone to enjoy”.

DEB ALLEN

definitely not compulsory”!

Pedalling the magic

Wairarapa is perfect for riding with so many great cycle trails available. And a lot of people are travelling much further afield with their bikes in tow,” says Deb. “We have one group of ladies that leave their husbands behind once a year to go explore new cycle trails together.”

Deb Allen became an employee turned owner, along with co-owner Ben Knight, six years ago when the pair bought Avantiplus Masterton. “It was an exciting and logical step to take over from the previous owner,” says Deb. “It was a big decision, but we’re still loving it, so it was a good decision”.

The sport is very social and is a great way to meet new people. “It’s easy to join a group and make new friends really quickly. Cyclists are a friendly bunch. I love hearing where people are off to next and finding out how it went once they’re back,” says Deb.

Deb enjoys being able to make the decisions for the storefront and, in particular, she has increased the focus on clothing and stock items that suit women. “I love choosing things that I know women need and love to have to make cycling enjoyable,” she says. “Overall, I feel I bring a more feminine touch to the store.”

One of her favourite parts of the job is helping parents on top-secret missions to get the right bike from Santa. “It’s fantastic. The kids come in and have a look at the bikes and go off and write their letters to Santa. After Christmas they come back all wide-eyed and excited telling me how Santa got it exactly right. It’s magic,” she says.

Deb had previously worked primarily ‘out back’ in the office but loves being out on the floor mixing with the customers. “I love all our customers and I’m pretty good at remember what stage of cycling they are at – whether it’s just trying it for the first since they were a child, or whether they are at the top of their field competing,” she says.

Avantiplus stock all the necessities and can easily get more specific items in. Deb enjoys keeping up to date with the latest trends and helping people choose the right gear for them. “I love chatting and helping people. Whether it’s choosing the right product, the right trail or the right bike,” she says. Avantiplus has a newsletter for updates and several magazines including the annual AA Traveller magazine. Deb is a cyclist calling herself a sunshine rider, she says, “I do a bit of everything – mountain biking, road biking, around town or on the cycle trails. I love it.”

Cycling has certainly become very ‘on trend’ with men and women of all ages jumping on their bike in their brightest lycra and whizzing around the region. Although Debbie notes that lycra is “most

Claire Bleakley - Homeopath

“But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be more expensive or cause more planning and construction worries for you than a standard drop in pool,” says Administration and Sales Manager, Linda Reed.

but for us it is easy. We know all the ins and outs and what needs to be done. So right from the first planning stages, I’ll make sure you’re compliant, I can offer support if you wish to do it yourself or I can do it for you.”

When it comes to construction many of us think of ‘men at work’, but this is not the case when you deal with the team at Pool Construction Ltd. Linda is the person you may have your initial discussions with and she brings the ‘woman’s touch’ to the project.

Linda has testimonials from satisfied clients who are more than happy for her to show potential new clients what their new pool could look like. She says she has “plenty of photos and testimonials and can take a potential client to look at a pool and say ‘how about this shape’ … then go down the road to another pool and say “with this style of tile”.

“From initial discussions through to final consents and the finished product, I will be there for the client,” she says. It is often the women of the family who make the initial inquiry, and to have someone to talk to who is enthusiastic, gets excited about colour and shape and understands the importance of aesthetics and how the pool will work for family life, entertaining etc is an important aspect of Linda’s job that she takes pride in delivering on. Furthermore Linda can help with the design of the area around the pool and can advise on compliance and council regulations around safety and fencing. As she says “for someone who hasn’t been through the process it can be daunting,

Once a client commits to purchasing a pool Linda prepares a fully comprehensive quote, and on acceptance manages the project through to final code of compliance. “I keep the client completely up to date right the way through the process,” she says. “And once the pool is in place I can advise on the easiest and most economical and environmentally-friendly products to keep the pool sparkling clean.” There’s that woman’s touch again. And if you don’t feel you want to bother with this yourself, Linda can even arrange to have someone do it for you.

Sunrise to Sunset Moments

Making special moments count

moments. As she says, “In nature we are blessed with beautiful sunrises and equally splendid sunsets. I want to help create memorable occasions that occur throughout your life from sunrise to sunset”. Hence the name, Sunrise to Sunset Moments. “It’s about encouraging people to celebrate all the special moments in life – not just the obvious ones. For example, vow renewals, anniversaries and naming ceremonies for babies,” she says.

Roz is fairly new to being a celebrant but she’s taking it very seriously. She has completed a Certificate in Celebrant Studies and is working towards the Diploma. “The studies have been great,” says Roz. “They cemented my decision to become a celebrant and gave me plenty of ideas and preparation to enable me to help people,” she says.

Pet naming or welcoming ceremonies are becoming popular to help the children take the responsibility of a pet seriously. At the other end of the spectrum are pet funerals, which can help the family adjust to a pet’s passing. Housewarmings and blessings help celebrate new beginnings and add a special ceremonial aspect to give your party a sense of occasion and meaning.

Roz is registered with Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) as an independent marriage celebrant and civil union celebrant. She is also a member of the Celebrants Association of New Zealand (CANZ). You can find her profile and a link to her website on the CANZ website. Roz has been involved in organising family functions, performed a memorial service and helped a couple with their wedding ceremony.

The important part that Roz brings to every occasion is the special touches – heartfelt words or rituals that can help bring an extra sense of occasion. Even if it’s something as simple as graduating or toasting your new year’s resolution, or moving on after a divorce. “Whenever it feels like one of life’s ‘moments’, it makes sense to stop and really take that moment in. Celebrate it, remember it, open a new door or close a chapter,” says Roz.

Although it’s things like weddings and funerals that come to mind when you think of a celebrant, Roz believes in the value of celebrating all of life’s significant

Ears To You

Guthrie Bowron Masterton

LIZ KIRKLAND

“Making a difference, one ear at a time” There is probably nothing more annoying than having blocked ears. Issues with hearing, or more to the point, not hearing well, for whatever reason, are concerning. But thankfully, Liz Kirkland, is able to help. Liz is a specialised ear nurse with her own clinic – or clinics, actually. Today, she’s in her Masterton clinic, behind the hospital in the Wellness Centre, where you’ll find her on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But you’ll also find her on occasion at her Martinborough clinic or at the Life Pharmacy, or at one of the 20 rest homes she also services. “Yes, it’s very busy at the moment! But I’m not complaining at all. “I love what I do every day. Being able to help people is immensely fulfilling,” says Liz. She has been running her clinics for two years now, but prior to that, Liz worked for Bay Audiology. “I enjoyed my time as their ear nurse. But what I love about what I do now is that I can take a more holistic approach to ear health.” “Naturally, Bay Audiology focus on hearing difficulties, usually prescribing hearing aids as a result,” says Liz. “In my clinics I do everything from a squishy/blocked ear, check for abnormalities, remove foreign bodies, and, of course, remove excess wax”. Liz adds that she also enjoys her informal therapist role, happy to hear about daily issues as part of the service, helping the client to leave feeling happier and less blocked up. “Wax is natural and healthy – we are supposed to have wax. It’s only when our ears over-produce wax and it becomes

JUDY-ANNE SMITH itchy, uncomfortable or blocked, that it becomes an issue” says Liz. Using a manual technique or microsuction, she gives instant results. She can also liase with your GP if more intervention is required. People don’t need a referral to see her. In fact, Liz would like people to call her directly if they are having an issue with their ears that they think she might be able to resolve. “Often people put up with ears that just aren’t feeling right, but aren’t bad enough to see a doctor for, but they don’t need to.” “I recommend people get regular check ups, especially for people aged over 50, regardless of specific issues, because more insidious concerns can arise that you wouldn’t notice without an ear check.“ “For example, melanoma or ear cancer,” says Liz. Liz is relishing her self-employed role and working with her wide range of clients, who include children and people with special needs. With a booming business (Liz sees 26 pairs of ears a day!), Liz has embarked on a Diploma in Small Business Management.

Bringing a splash of colour to your home Judy-Anne has been a Window Furnishing and Colour Consultant at Guthrie Bowron in Masterton for the past four years and loves every minute of it. “I get so much personal satisfaction from helping my customers make a transformational difference to their home,” says Judy-Anne. Judy-Anne originally started a curtain department in Guthrie Bowron’s predecessor, Smith and Smith, in 1983. Judy-Anne had spent several years selling curtains and blinds, throughout the lower North Island. After which she worked in Real Estate here and in Australia and a variety of Marketing Positions for 20 years. Coming back to Masterton to be closer to family, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect because owner of Guthrie Bowron Masterton was looking for a part-time person. “It was like a full circle moment, coming back to Guthrie Bowron and doing something I love,” says Judy-Anne. Now she is working full time and kept extremely busy. “We have people come into our store and we help them select fabrics. We arrange to do a measure and quote and have a look at the samples in the person’s home,” says Judy-Anne. “Some people have an idea of what they want, and others don’t know where to start. I don’t mind which! I have a good eye for what will work after years in the industry – not just working with

curtains, but also my real estate background really helps”. Thanks to Guthrie Bowron’s buying power, Judy-Anne is always confident she can provide her customers with excellent value for money. “I love that I can give our customers such great value. I can work within almost any budget, and give people more than they were expecting. We also do free making which is a huge bonus”. All of Guthrie Bowron’s curtains are custom-made, nothing is ‘off the rack’. A common misconception is that this means they are more expensive but Judy-Anne says that’s not the case. “When we have free making promotions, it is a tremendous saving”. “I arrange the installation and all the little details, like the tracks etc. And, of course, Guthrie Bowron is a one stop shop for DIYers. So when you’re renovating you can also consider your painting and wallpaper all at the same time”. Judy-Anne has a very easy style and approach, there’s no ‘hard-sell’ involved. “I know I have a great product and what I do really helps people improve their homes. I don’t feel the need to ‘sell’ to anyone, I’m just here to help,” she says. When Judy-Anne isn’t busy selling curtains and blinds, she’s hanging out with her family and her partner, John’s, family. She is thoroughly enjoying decorating and styling her new home.

Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Cafe

Shape Shop LINDA OLDFIELD

Reaching business and fitness goals MARISSA LAKEN, MONIQUE KLOEG, JULIANNA HEMA

It’s cookie time at 10 O’clock! It’s a busy and bustling café at 9.30 in the morning on a Monday! The friendly and cheerful staff buzz around with a lovely mix of professionalism and kindness. Three women are the core management team that keep the café humming with a perfect balance of efficiency and customer service. Monique Kloeg, General Manager Monique has been at TENCC for ten years and has been running the café for seven of those years. She oversees all aspects of the café and relies on Marissa and Julianna to run their own parts of the café. “I have a great team here at the café which really helps me do my job well and keep our customers really happy with our great food and customer service,” says Monique. An aspect of her job that Monique loves and is best at is new product development. “I’m an ideas person, so I’m always watching the latest trends and seeing what our customers are enjoying,” she says. Most recently those trends have included creating new ‘Buddha bowls’ – full of healthy and delicious takeaway lunches and sustainability initiatives, such as introducing paper straws and reusable takeaway coffee cups. Monique is working towards having something for everyone with an interest in keeping up with dietary requirements and lifestyle choices such as

catering to vegans, for example. Marissa Laken, Bakery Manager Marissa is very new in her role as Bakery Manager, a promotion that she deservedly received a few months ago. She started with TENCC six years ago and has worked her way from the bottom to the top. “I’m really enjoying it,” says Marissa. “Monique is a wonderful boss and mentor and has coached me through several apprenticeships and promotions as I’ve worked my way up through the ranks at the café”. Marissa’s true love is creating all the beautiful and intricate decorative cakes for special occasions – and for competitions. “During competition time we can be working 12 – 13 hour days. But it’s all worth it. We’ve come away with some amazing wins, which makes us very proud of our work,” she says. Julianna Hema, Shop Manager Julianna is the person out the front, smiling at the customers cheerily as she keeps the queue moving swiftly. She’s responsible for running front of house, the kitchen and the shop, which is packed full of goodies to take home, perfect for gifts. Julianna has also worked at the café for ten years, starting as head barista. She was taught to serve customers and learnt about the food side of the business, working her way up to her current position. After just one year in the job, she was promoted to team leader. “If you’re a dedicated staff member and put in the hours, your efforts get recognised,” says Julianna. “It’s fun, busy and challenging. Every day is different. I love it. I feel part of the family here and so do our customers”.

Seeing people succeed with “that happy look on their face” is the most important thing to Linda at her women’s-only fitness studio in Masterton. The fitness studio has been operating for three years now but Linda remembers how it felt when she first stepped out of her comfort zone to build her dream fitness studio, along with husband Steve Oldfield. “I had a 12 month window to make it work and still go back to my job,” says Linda. “My boss said, take 12 months and keep us as a safety net. But he later told me he knew I wouldn’t be back. And, thankfully, everything has gone really well and we’re still growing and doing what we love,” says Linda. Between the pair, they have extensive qualifications and experience. As well as having a nursing background, Linda is a qualified personal trainer. Steve has a financial background and is also a qualified exercise nutritionist. To add to their skillset, they’ve both competed in bodybuilding competitions, and won in the Wellington Pairs competition in 2014. “We sometimes get a bit competitive over who gets to use what gear, but we have very complementary skillsets, so it’s great to work together,” says Linda. “We have clients that have been with us since the beginning who are looking and feeling great. We also have new clients starting with us that are excited, and just at the beginning of their journey”. Linda is very passionate about the stress management benefits of exercise and good nutrition. “Exercise does amazing physical things for our health – such as increase bone density and improve heart health – but beyond that it also does incredible things for our mind, reducing stress levels by releasing endorphins”, she says. The fitness studio is designed for women aged 30-70 who want a safe, secure, private environment to work out in, with other like-minded women. “We know all our

clients really well, we support and follow them closely and provide as much help as possible, whether it’s personal training, group training, nutrition education or an encouraging comment on the way past as they’re working out,” says Linda. Linda spent her previous professional career as a District Nurse in the community. She was dealing with patients with chronic illness (which had often been caused through lifestyle factors) on a daily basis and decided there had to be a better way. “I see the value of prescribing exercise for chronically ill people to help them feel better. But, even better, I love helping people get fit and healthy, so they can have a better quality of life and avoid the chronic illnesses in the first place that are avoidable,” says Linda. In regard to the future, Linda is very much focused on serving her clients well, maintaining a close-knit environment of like-minded ladies, and retaining the “personal touch”. As well as this, she’s very keen to give back to the community that has helped Shape Shop grow to this point. Shape Shop is co-sponsoring a Wairarapa women’s hockey team, and have also begun working in partnership with the Wairarapa Cancer Society.

Dilicakes

Rebecca Kempton Photography REBECCA KEMPTON

Award Winning Professional Photographer You can tell when you speak with Rebecca that her eyes light up when she talks about her work ‘It’s a passion, a love of capturing that moment, gone in an instant yet kept forever’.

DEANNA DEANNES

It’s all coming up roses – icing roses, that is - at Dilicakes! Deanna is a busy Mum of three but that hasn’t stopped her taking on a new challenge, starting a new franchise, Dilicakes in Wairarapa. “I felt like I was ready for something new – something fun and challenging – that was just for me,” says Deanna. Dilicakes is a well-established business that started in Waikanae several years ago. Based around beautiful ‘bouquets’ of reasonably priced cupcakes and other delicious, and possibly more importantly, edible, cakes to suit any budget. Each bouquet is personally delivered by Deanna throughout Wairarapa. “I love seeing people’s happy reactions when they receive a bouquet,” she says.

Deanna has always been an avid baker and enjoyed being creative. She had already liked the Dilicakes Facebook page and when the franchise opportunity popped up in Wairarapa, she leapt at the chance to create her own business. “I couldn’t have started a brand new business from scratch, but buying into the Dilicakes franchise has meant I’ve been able to hit the ground running with wellestablished systems already in place. That means I can focus on my marketing and the baking, so it’s perfect,” says Deanna. Having just started in August of last year, and fresh off a busy Mother’s Day, Deanna is busy in the mode of establishing a loyal clientele. “I’m really trying to get out and meet people. I have a long list of people I’d like to see. For example we have the most amazing marshmallows and macarons that can be customised to suit – perfect for a café to have their logo on them,” she says. Thanks to the support of Deanna’s husband (and occasional head dishwasher) and her kids who are more than happy to help out with quality control, Deanna is thriving and enjoying her new challenge. Deanna describes it as “something new, fun and different”. It seems quite a change for Deanna who is originally from the United States and worked in healthcare, but as Deanna says, “I was always the one asked to bring the baking, or doing elaborate birthday cakes for the kids. So it’s a natural next step for me to turn my hobby into a business.”

Rebecca adores the beautiful light and landscapes we have here in Wairarapa and is passionate about promoting our stunning region and the people and businesses that call Wairarapa home. She will often be found bare foot in the middle of a river or lake, balancing precariously on a rock or trekking across a frosty paddock on a cold morning just to get the perfect shot. Equally, rushing around after a toddler, witnessing that beautiful love and fun within a family, or capturing that moment when a baby takes its first breath are also great loves of Rebecca’s to photograph. “Rebecca is able to capture amazing images in a real and honest, yet beautiful way. At The Wairarapa Journal we like to represent Wairarapa as the unique and varied place that it is and that is exactly what Rebecca has the ability to do. She is entirely professional, yet puts her subjects instantly at ease. She has an impressive portfolio in landscape work but she is equally at home photographing portraiture and commercial work, as she very quickly deciphers how to achieve the perfect image.” Josepha Murray The Wairarapa Journal Commercial “We had such a fun and relaxed family photo shoot with Becs, she went above and beyond to get the few extra shots we wanted. Her photos are beautiful and really captured the moment.” Georgie and Jon Butler Family Portraiture ‘’We were fortunate enough to have Becs join us to bring our 3rd baby into the world. Becs had a way of capturing photos where we hardly even realised she was there but was always available if we needed her for something – and now we have those special memories documented in a way we can keep forever. Our only regret was not having her there for the birth of our first 2 children!’’ Danielle and Nick Perkins Birth

“We had Rebecca photograph our team, both individually and as a group as well as capturing the surrounding vineyard. We were keen to use these images for our website and social media platforms. Rebecca was very down to earth and was able to relate quickly to everyone on our team, making them feel comfortable in front of the camera. The images of the staff were exactly what we were looking for, capturing the great relationship within the team whilst showcasing the stunning surroundings” Dry River Vineyard Commercial “It’s been a privilege to know and work with Rebecca Kempton for the past few years. Rebecca has consistently been one of the top sellers at Ventana Creative Collective and her work only seems to reach new heights every time. She is truly dedicated to making what might ordinarily be an everyday sight into a magical scene that draws you in to total captivation. Her range of colourful photographic landscapes, lakes and forests often show movement and perfect timing. People often linger in front of her works an extra moment longer, almost forcing themselves to let go, come back to the present. We just sold another one of her works this week, another absolutely delighted owner has been made. We look forward to many more years of collaboration to come.” Auriga Martin Ventana Creative Collective

Gibson Sheat Lawyers

DONNA WATT, MICHELLE WILLIAMS, REBECCA EDGECOMBE, JULIE MILLAR, ALI MARETT

Lawyers from all walks of life Well, they considered careers as a life-flight paramedic (Julie), a food and travel writer (Michelle), a professional violinist (Donna) or working at Disneyland (Rebecca), but thankfully, if you need a lawyer in the Wairarapa, they pursued legal careers instead. A powerful group of women work at the Masterton office of Gibson Sheat. Julie Millar is a partner and is the longeststanding woman on the team, having worked for its predecessor prior to the merger, since 2008. More recently she is working in all aspects of property law – such as relationship property and rural succession. Incredibly sporty, Julie is a committed hiker in between her legal practice. She describes herself as “serious”, “frank” and a “cost-effective operator”. Michelle Williams is an associate. She started “many moons ago” as a legal secretary, then a legal executive, and decided it was time to become a fullyfledged lawyer in 2000. Clearly she took the best advice she was ever given – to set a goal and strive to achieve it. Michelle is passionate about communicating plainly and simply, “None of that ‘herewith’ and ‘forthwith’ stuff”, she says. She takes pride

in her clients being thrilled they have found a lawyer they can understand. New to Wairarapa, Michelle lives in Martinborough, and recently adopted a stray cat, called Batman due to its love of the neighbourhood (it hasn’t been legally established whether Batman has crimefighting abilities). Rebecca, a legal executive, is the newest team member. She’s only been at Gibson Sheat for a month but she’s already enjoying it. “I feel like I’ve been very well looked after. It’s great to work for such a well respected organisation,” she says. Rebecca moved from Auckland and focuses on Estate work Donna, a law clerk at Gibson Sheat since 2009, now turned lawyer. “Gibson Sheat has a very strong ethos of growing and developing their staff. It’s a very supportive environment to learn and grow in,” says Donna.

Hebe Designer Boutique

DANIELLE BURKHART

Exciting news for Hebe lovers You’re hearing it here first … Hebe is moving … don’t panic … they are only moving just across the road! Still be in its home of Kuripuni, just in a bigger, brighter, roomier, store. “We are so excited,” says owner, Danielle. “We’ve just confirmed we will be taking over two stores across the road and turning them into one big beautiful ‘Hebe’ gallery-style space. It will be my dream space.”

The firm has a very strong rural focus to what they do and also elder law, which relates to all aspects of working with elderly people from estate planning and wills through to tougher aspects such as dealing with elder abuse.

The new store will allow customers to have more room to enjoy all the beautiful offerings that Hebe has. There will be additional changing areas and a seated area too. The space will give Danielle more room to design and meet with brands. Instore fashion events will be able to be held on a more regular basis. The new store is only a few months away in time for spring shopping, so Danielle says to “keep an eye out as you drive past”.

The work can be stressful, but thankfully Donna organised a Tai Chi class that the group participate in each Friday lunchtime. The men are invited but apparently are yet to make an appearance. As Michelle says, it helps them to “learn to breathe deeply” (helpfully demonstrating with a deep breath).

Hebe is well known as the ‘go to’ store for women with a penchant for fashion in Masterton and the wider Wairarapa. Hebe has a carefully curated range of newer up-and-coming fashion ranges and well-established iconic brands from New Zealand and Australasia, at a range of price points and sizes.

They are a lovely and approachable team, or as Michelle says, “We are just human.”

There will be some new collections and labels available, such as Marle and Zulu

& Zephyr. But Danielle has been focusing on refining her labels based on what she knows her customers want. “We’ve got our favourite labels that our customers love and we’ve built great relationships with those brands. We don’t want to get too big or too diverse and lose that personal connection,” she says. Hebe is also available online and the online business is growing. “We send clothes all around New Zealand,” says Danielle. Instore, three staff are ready and willing to play stylist. One of them, Chevelle, says she loves styling women, “especially the ones who really don’t know where to start”. Hebe have a VIP programme for in-store and online customers. All women working at Hebe are mums and work on a part time basis. “It’s a very supportive and flexible working environment,” says Chevelle. Danielle has a Diploma in Fashion Design, coming top of her class. She has also completed a Certificate in Small Business Management. Danielle formulated her own label, ‘My Boyfriend’s Back’ and wholesaled it to boutiques in New Zealand and Australia. The label is now released in capsules in Hebe and occasionally other local stores and will also be in the new store. Danielle can’t wait to welcome customers to the new store. When the new store opens there will be a lot of excitement and a party to welcome customers and Spring collections’. “We are so excited! Keep watching this space, more news to come!” she says.

Exciting times for Shine Hairstylists in 2018!

BECKS TOSSWILL

Laura Gayfer, left, Keryn Evans, Angela Bush, Gemma Smart.

Our Greytown Little Theatre owned building has been deemed as being earthquake prone so it was time to find a new home! After months of searching, we finally found the perfect place. Shop 6 in The Hub was empty and begging to be filled with people again. A perfect spot for a salon. With off street parking for our clients and situated in a beautiful setting in the heart of Greytown, we knew this was where we would call home. There was no time to waste and after securing the new site we were fully into planning the fit out of our new salon. Many hours were spent trawling through Google and Pinterest, and brainstorming sessions in the staffroom over our morning coffee. A plan was sketched, consent was given, and before we knew it, walls were being built and water pipes were being fitted! Our vision of bringing the colours and textures of our new environment in to the salon started to become a reality.

We took inspiration from the weathered wooden posts that feature in the landscape of the Hub and the iconic walnut tree that features on the edge of the carpark. A few more grey hairs and nearly six months later our dream is ready to share. We wanted to create a warm, inviting environment where clients can take time out from their busy lives and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of a fresh new salon. With the help of a top team of professional, talented stylists using L’Oréal Professional and Redken products, it is Shine’s pleasure to create beautiful hair in a beautiful environment. The team at Shine are Owner/Senior Stylist Keryn Evans, Senior Stylists Angela Bush and Laura Gayfer, and Third Year Apprentice Stylist Gemma Smart.

A lifestyle business with family at heart Becks Tosswill has gone from being a Mum who wanted to be able to buy herself a coffee to a full service design agency. “Initially I just wanted the independence of being able to buy myself something without feeling guilty,” says Becks. Having worked in design her entire working life, Becks was able to easily establish herself as the ‘go to’ woman for beautiful and functional design work. Becks’ team has grown to include several sub-contractors who handle much of the day-to-day design work. Becks has found her value for her clients lies in the design strategy. “I am an ideas generator,” she says. “I take someone’s business vision and make it bigger and better than they expected. Almost a truer reflection of what they really wanted and needed”. Branding and design can feel like elusive concepts. But in fact, what Becks is brilliant at, is taking that idea and translating it into tangible things. Things

that people in business can then go out and create momentum for their business with. “Through talking with my clients, I’m able to really ‘see’ what they want and make it come to life for them – so they can see and touch it too,” she says. Sometimes people will come to Becks saying they need a “website”, “brochure” or “business card”, and part of Becks’ job is to take a step back and help them look at the bigger picture of where they need to head. “Those things – website, brochure, etc – are easy to do once you’ve got the strategy right” she says. “I love helping people. I especially love helping people fulfil their business dreams,” she adds. By focusing on direction and strategy, Becks has been able to maintain her lifestyle, which was, after all, the reason she set up Farmer’s Daughter in the first place. Under no illusion that her kids come first, Becks tries to restrict her working week to within 20 hours. “I learnt that late nights and rushing to meet deadlines was counter-productive and not conducive to being creative. So I retrained myself to stick to leading, directing, and being creative, rather than feeling like I had to do it all myself,” she says. Becks loves her lifestyle business where she feels fulfilled creatively and can balance being a busy Mum of three alongside the business. Not to mention her other duties, such as being a farmer’s wife, on an award-winning farm.
