If you find mostly bare black Neoprene on the outside it is called a skin Neoprene suit. Because the Neoprene foam itself is very soft and vulnerable, mostly the Neoprene is enhanced by an surface embossing (normaly a fine mesh structure – therefore skin Neoprene is also called mesh or single lined). This embossing improves robustness and tearing strength as it makes the surface more dense. But obviously this process also reduces the stretch properties. The advantage compared to double lined Neoprene is a the less evaporative heat loss caused by the windchill factor.

The other category of Neoprene is called double lined: Instead of using skin Neoprene on the outside a thin jersey layer is laminated on the Neoprene sheets. It protects the Neoprene foam against ripping and makes it more robust than skin Neoprene. Furthermore it is more elastic compared to skin Neoprene as it is not embossed on the surface. And for some the increased style factor by adding color and nice graphics is also a plus factore. The downside though is a higher evaporative heat loss when the wet jersey surface is exposed to the wind.

Hybrid Since both skin and double lined suits have advantages and disadvantages, ION created an other new wetsuit catagory which is called ’Hybrid’. It basically combines pannels of both constructions to achieve a unique combination of skin Neoprene for the body panels and double lined for the arms and legs panels. This results in a fantastic performance in terms of warmth, comfort and stretch exactly where you need it instead of having to decide for one or the other.

And therefore in 2014 ION came up with the revolutionary Neoprene technology: NEXKIN ®, which is a solution to ’merge’ the advantages of skin and double lined Neoprene. It combines the outstanding warmth and wind chill protection of a skin suit with the great stretch, effortless comfort and durability of double lined Neoprene (20% lighter and 25% more elasticity than regular skin).

The A_Type Neoprene is a technical Neoprene type with punched holes – similar to a perforated steel plate. Depending on the specific purpose, the holes are of smaller or bigger diameter.

Higher cell foam density means higher weight, therefore the K_Type Neoprene is only used for smaller panels.

SEAM TECHNOLOGY Power_Seam

S_Seal

New seam sealing technology similar to S_Seal, but even less restriction, weight and sealing width. This seam sealing provides more elasticity, freedom of movement, ripping durability and superior waterproofness on all seams. It even works in different colors and creates the unique technical look of our new ION Select models.

ION’s approved highly elastic liquid seam sealing glue for outstanding water sealing and even greater bomb proof tearing strength of GBS_Seams.

Glued Blind-Stitch (GBS) Seams Application

Sewing

This seam technology is most commonly used for thicker wetsuits from approximatelly 3 – 6 mm thick Neoprene which require best waterresistance.

After glueing, the seams are stitched on one side with a special blind-stitch sewing machine. A curved needle pokes through the Neoprene layer (without actually poking through the Neoprene to the other side) and applies an elastic seam. If you can see the stitching only on one side of the seam then the suit is featured with GBS_Seams.

Glueing The edges of the Neoprene panels are covered with a highly adhesive, UV resistant contact glue which needs to dry for a few minutes. Then the glue is applied a second time to make it more sticky. Assembling

Pros By using this technique, the seam is highly tear proof, elastic and water resistant.

Now the corresponding edges of the Neoprene panels are put together by hand and then firmly squeezed with an electric pressing tool cm by cm to achieve the high tearing strength.

This seam (also called Flat Lock) is commonly used for thinner wetsuits, rashguards and accessories with a Neoprene thickness of up to max. 2 – 3 mm that does not require watertight seams.

It is much faster and less complex to produce a flat stitch wetsuit compared to a GBS_Seams suit.

This manufacturing process is extremely complex and time consuming and therefore very expensive.

Keyfeatures Ninja_Knees NEW! What’s the most common thing a customer does in the shop? Exactly, pulling the wetsuit’s arms. But hey, the legs deserve at least the same attention! Therefore the new Ninja_Knees feature uses the same high elastic material used in the arm panels. The result is an amazing freedom of movement while bending your knees.

Additional Neoprene pads protect sensitive body areas like shins, ribs, crotch, hips, tail bone, etc. against pressure and impact injuries. The number of pads varies according to the suit. Each pad consists of a special high density K_Type Neoprene foam to damp the impact force.

The specific modifications in the panel construction (called Flex_Control) of some products result in a better performance of this product. ION Neoprene Socks for example have a striped Flex_Control print on the instep which provides better stance and stability by reducing the stretch in this area. Or by adding a double lined flex panel on the arm sleeves of the Quantum Select Series the elasticity of these skin suits was improved where it is most needed.

Seal_Tite (Wrist)

This single layer collar construction provides perfect water sealing and improved wearing comfort. The super smooth Glide_Skin on the inside of the collar avoids skin irritations and seals the neck perfectly without choking. On the outside an aditional S_Seal stripe on the collar rim reduces water intrusion and the heightened collar protects against cold water and the windchill effect.

A S_Seal rubber stripe print around the inside of the wrists results in a tighter sealed fit which avoids water rushing into your arms. ION chose this specific S_Seal also because it is very UV resistant and durable – for a long product life.

Standard Features and Materials Water Gate Water_Gate_Plus All ION semidry wetsuits (long arms and long legs) are equipped with the Water_Gate_Plus batwing panel on the back behind the zipper. It works like a water barrier to keep out the water which soaks through the back zipper. To improve this feature even more, all ION Water_Gate_Plus batwings (except Capture) have an additional cuff extension (like a collar) worn over the head. And additionally the glued blind stitched seam are covered by an extra Neoprene tape sealing.

Gate_Keeper Problem: when you put on a wetsuit with the Water_Gate_Plus batwing construction the back panel tends to roll up inside and makes it hard to grab it without help. Solution: a Velcro patch on the upper part of the batwing makes it possible to fix the batwing on the neck closure before putting on the suit. The Gate_Keeper velcro patches on the batwing and on the neck closure are indicated in red color.

VELCRO CLOSURE Velcro_Fix (Neck) Problem: ION uses the strongest Velcro type available for a secure lock but the disadvantage is that the inside jersey on the collar might get damaged by this strong Velcro. Solution: there is a small Velcro plush counterpart on the neck, so that the strong closure Velcro can easily be folded and fixed on the inside of the collar. Sunglass_Loop A small webbing loop on the neck of wetsuits and all kind of Neoprene tops to attach the safety line of ION sunglasses.

Standard Features and Materials Contour_Cut In order to improve felxibility and comfort, all ION wetsuits come with the ION Contour_Cut. It enhances the flex in collar, wrists, ellbows, insteps and the hollows of the knees.

Seam_Reinforcements All stress points are reinforced either with Melco_Tape on the inside seams or rubber logo patches on the outside to prevent ripping.

Crotch_Protection Selected ION wetsuits are equipped with a double lined crotch panel, to avoid abrasion from leg straps of seat harnesses. To provide an additional windchill protection without reducing the flexibility in the crotch area a special hexagon coating is applied.

Tatex_Protectors Very abrasion resistant rubber protection printings on the knee panels. Nevertheless the according ION Flex_Control zones allow outstanding freedom of movement.

Key_Loop All ION wetsuits are equipped with a clever key pocket with an included elastic safety loop on calf, arm or other places depending on the model (please only store water resistant keys in this pocket to avoid damage).

Drain_Holes All wetsuits with Water_Gate_Plus batwing panels have little holes on the lower back part to allow water which enters through the back zipper leaking out easily and keep the back area dry. There are Drain_Holes also placed in the calves which prevent the water from getting stuck in the legs like a bubble. ION front zip wetsuits additionally have Drain_Holes in the chest panel and the back panel. Velcro_LEG LOOP All long-leg ION wetsuits are provided with detachable Velcro Leg_Loops (except Quantum (has an integrated Velcro_Fix on the legs for easy entry)). This loop can be wrapped tight around the ankle to increase the prevention from water rushing in. To not lose the Leg_Loop on the water it has a unique construction of especially strong Velcro. Of course the Velcro Loop can also be removed easily by hand if not needed.

Limestone_Neoprene For years all ION Neoprene products like wetsuits, Neoprene tops and other Neoprene accessories are made of highly elastic certified limestone Neoprene from Japan. This means that the raw material (polychloroprene chips) is made of calcium carbite which is extracted from limestone (calcium carbonate) instead of using Neoprene derived from petrolium oil. Even though this production method takes a lot of energy for the electric arc furnaces where the limestone is processed, this energy derives from hydropower. And hydropower produces no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions, which would significantly contribute to global warming.

Then you know the inspiration for this feature: A very thin layer of Tatex Neoprene with a full cover palm embossing in circular ribbed shape provides awesome grip on the wet surface of a boom or kite bar. It prevents cramps and makes a huge difference compared to conventional glove constructions.

A unique construction to increase the sealing of gloves and boots. The Donut_Cuff seal is made of one piece of Neoprene with Glide_Skin on the inside which provides a slick sealing surface.

Ballistic_Sole (ARAMID) ballistic_sole

Provides an unmatched protection against most sharp mussels, coral reefs and other sharp objects. The Ballistic_Sole is equipped with an extra layer of highly tearing resistant ARAMID protection fibres. These fibres are also used in bulletproof vests for example. Although, like an airbag in a car accident, there cannot be a 100% guarantee not to get injured â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but the Ballistic_Sole surely provides the best combination of protection and flexibility for your foot!
