A Brief History of Wakefield Park The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994. It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at the circuit. At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to achieve a quick lap. In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight. Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also purchase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the country. The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also introduced and continue today. From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again improving the circuit’s facilities. In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the complex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great club sport venue. With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator areas enjoy today’s racing. The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly quick time. Wakefield Park, just another great part of the Goulburn area. Current lap Record Holder Ben Crighton from New Zealand

FATHER & SON TEAM FOR WAKEFIELD PARK 1 HOUR ENDURO Wakefield Park will host the fifth round of the NSW Motor Race Championship on August 20/21, with an exciting entry list for many categories including the feature event, the annual One Hour Production Touring Car Enduro.

licence, and was then offered the opportunity to test a Formula Ford with Anglo Motorsport. This was followed by a full time drive in 2006 where he averaged top four finishes all season with podium results, and qualifying on the front row for his debut race at Wakefield Park.

Many of the entries for the race won in 2010 by Barton Mawer and Jim Hunter in a Subaru Sti, are for two drivers sharing a car, while their are still several running solo, with the Japanese all wheel drive turbo cars taking on the might of the V8’s and the German BMW.

He stated in the early seventies driving Triumph TR2 in Production Sports Cars, followed by a Formula Ford in the Formula Ford Driver to Europe Series Championship. Following the Formula Fords he moved to touring cars with a Group C peripheral ported Mazda RX7 in 1982 which he raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship series, including Bathurst (the car was known as the ‘Goodrich Car’ as it raced on radial tyres in 1983 at Bathurst , Sandown and Surfers Paradise).

One of the most interesting entries is the well-performed father and son team, Gerry and Leigh Burges driving a Racer Inc Mitsubishi Evo V11.

Gerry was also a front-runner in tarmac rallies in a Mitsubishi Evo in 2003/04 when he competed in events such as Mt Buller and the East Coast Targa with son Leigh as co-driver. Then followed a return to circuit racing in NSW Production Touring Car events after he purchased Garry Holts championship winning Evo V11, the car he and Leigh hope will take them to victory at Wakefield Park in their One Hour enduro. Both drivers have experience in endurance races, with Leigh teaming with Leanne Tander in the 2009 Bathurst 12 Hour race to finish second in class driving a Honda Prelude. The 2010 Bathurst 12 Hour race saw Gerry team with Terry Conroy and Leanne Tander, and they also came home second in class driving the Honda, and of course he competed in the Bathurst 1000 in the 80’s.

ANSLOW & SHAW BREAK THE DROUGHT IN WAKEFIELD 300 Those that attended last weekends sixth running of the Wakefield 300 at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park were treated to a first class motor race that eventually saw Sydney drivers Steve Anslow and Ric

like black ice on worn slicks and as there was a blizzard an hour or so away I suppose that’s not surprising.“We were working in the garage most of Saturday and missed the second W300 Practice but the ‘each driver must qualify’ rule meant that I had to drive in the Top Ten shootout – which was not ideal as I am about 1 or 2 seconds slower than Ric if the car is up to temp but on cold tyres I am about 6 to 8 seconds slower. “With the freshly fitted dog box which we had not used prior to the weekend and hard enduro race tyres our shootout was a real problem and there was no way I could repeat Ric’s 1.03 Top Ten from 2010. We actually thought getting to the podium again this year was going to be a major task as we were up against some high horsepowered vehicles. “So to come 2nd to the V8 powered Rx7 by only 43 seconds after 137 laps was just a awesome result for the team,’ he said. Raddatz said he will be competing in the Winton 300 later in the year and definitely wants his title back and the rumour is that it will be in a v8 powered MX5!Anslow complimented the MX5 Mania team“The efforts of the Raddatz/Otten team have to be seen, to be understood. They punch way above their weight and what they do each year with that MX5 is simply incredible.Qualifying saw yet another name finish on top, with Craig Burgess taking provisional pole in the Nissan Skyline R32 GTR with a very impressive 1m:03.1008 sec lap. Burgess was driving with his father Adam Burgess, the two Southern Sporting Car Club members, who also race Aussie Racing Cars, were making their endurance race debut in their very colourful and potent Bright Print Group GTR which is a regular contender in ‘Super Lap’. Second fastest with a 1m:04.5115secs lap was 2010 polesitters Steve Anslow / Ric Shaw in the RX7, while Andrew McPherson in the AMAC Motorsport Exige was third (1m:04.9231sec) and Raddatz fourth (1m:06.7490sec) in the MX5 Mania Mazda Mx5. Fifth quickest was Alan Moses in his A9X Holden Torana which he had Radical racer Richard Fricker sharing the driving duties. Next best was Wakefield 300 rookies Terry Denovan and Mark Morsillo in

their Holden Commodore VH V8, Wakefield 300 rookies David Atkin / Tom Browell (BMW M3R), two time race winner Nathan Jess from Canberra and Matthew Thompson (Vic) in the first of the Future Racers, Raddatz’ MX5 Mania team mates Rob Hay / Nick Cancian (Mazda MX5) and rounding out the top 10 another rookie 300 pairing Brett Stevenson and Philip Bunter in a big fire breathing Walkinshaw. Before the Top 10 Shoot-out even started there was a casualty, when the Walkinshaw was withdrawn with a broken camshaft, its place taken by father and son team Jake (the son) and Radical pilot Steve Shelley. They were running a Mazda MX5 under the MX5 Mania banner, making all three cars from the team in the shoot-out. Showing the diversity of the Wakefield 300 field, there were eight different types of the car that qualified for the Top 10, and seven that started. The shoot-out was run in very dark and freezing conditions, and saw Craig Burgess finish with the fastest time in the GTR to take a shock pole position with 1m07.0950secs. Second was taken by McPherson (1m07.2751secs), whilst MX5 Mania locked out the second row, with Hay 3rd (1m08.3466sec) and Raddatz 4th (1m08.6029secs). Rounding out the top 10 after the shootout was Jess 5th (Future Racer), Jake Shelley 6th (MX5), Moses 7th (Torana), Denovan 8th (Commodore), Anslow a surprising 9th and Browell rounding out the top 10 in the M3. The rolling start race saw a good jump from pole by Burgess, the power of the GTR drawing a quick gap, but it was Shaw in the RX7 who made the lightning start from ninth carving his way through the field to take the lead on lap 2.

lapping the then second placed Lotus on L28, and that is despite Shaw spinning on lap 16 at the Fish-hook – and still managed a 1m:o9 lap. He also had a RF tyre blow going into T2 at high speed after some severe lock ups, causing him to go straight off through the gravel, and then again at T5 as he was limping back to the pits. David Raddatz/Shane Otten eventually finished second, only a lap down on the winners, making it their third straight podium – second in ‘09 and first last year – with the little MX5 once again being driven absolutely flat out for 300kms. In third place a further lap down after making a second fuel stop were Andrew McPherson and Matt Bolton driving the Lotus Exige, and they were only one lap further back, which is a great effort considering they had a second refuel stop. In fourth was another of the amazing little MX5’s the third prepared by MX5 Mania and driven by Steve Shelley with his son Jake having his first ever circuit race. Jess/ Thompson did a great job in the only Future Racer to finish, coming home in fifth. On lap 11 they were forced to pit to rectify a fluid leak after they received the mechanical black flag, and as they worked their way back up through the field had countless dices with other competitors.

There were many hard luck stories in the race, including the Moses / Fricker Torana that had been running as high as third and not much lower than 5th for a long period of time, but it was forced to the pits on lap 48 after a wheel came off on turn 9 and limped back to the pits for repairs which cost 47 laps until they returned to the track and they were the final finishers in 15th.

The Hay / Canican MX5 which had been running in the top four all day and not missing a beat, unfortunately developed an engine problem and was forced to retire on lap 117. Denovan / Morsillo eventually retired the TDMS Commodore on lap 109 after a most courageous effort. They were running 8th until lap 25 when Denovan ran off the track into the gravel with a flat tyre, and they ten worked their way back up to 5th, but the car struck engine problems after foam from the fuel tanks was sucked in.Another of the front runners to retire was the peakrpm.com BMW, when it was parked off the main straight beside the Burgess GTR on lap 90 with a front right suspension failure, which occurred on the main straight at speed.

Tampered Motorsports Adam Ronke and warren Sheehan were doing a great job in their Nissan Skyline R32 GTS, after contact with another car put the front end out. A lot of time was lost in the pits correcting the problem including a wheel alignment, eventually finishing 14th after eyeing off a top 5 finishThe unofficial Ute challenge ended early, and both the Merrick Malouf / Shane Hunt Prime Financial Ford Falcon and Daniel Flanagan / Bryan Fitzpatrick Good Year Autocare Phillip Holden VY eventually retired.
