T
his month we cover a wide range of events at Both Winton and Wakefield. #PCM8 or Performance Car mania edition 8 at Winton was a massive success. Not only did the team have to counteract fake event cancellation notices and predictions of flooding but all done with the watching eye of the Police who are still cautious with Street Machine events after the Easternat riots. From all reports the event was a smash, record entrants, massive crowd and drivers on their best behaviour. The New shower and Toilet blocks won acclaim from punters who camped and now make the Winton Campground an excellent choice if you can’t get a motel room localy. We also Cover Historics from Wakefield Park, Preview what is shaping up to be the race of the of the year , the Winton 300, the BP Midland / Pedders “No Bull” sprint round from father’s day and Brian Nightingale takes us on a tour of the country chasing with our members racing from morgan Park to Sydney motorsport Park to Wakefield, Winton and Sandown and anywhere else in between. more than 25 members have been ou racing in September which has kept Brian a busy man. Brian also attended the Rodney Crick tribute dinner and was lucky enough to have Breakfast the next day with Mark Webber, Alan Webber and Spencer Martin. It was Sad news to hear of the passing of Rodney Crick who was well known to Winton
So come along and see faces that you have seen before but did not realize that they are Benalla Auto Club members, wish everyone a Merry Christmas and have a great day.

crowds winning the Truck Championship and Winton rounds year after year. When Rodney took the flag you would see all the kids rush to the start finish straight fence as they knew exactly where to go and that Rodney would be doing his famous victory donuts on the cool down lap. From everyone at BAC our thoughts go out to his family and friends. Our Motorcycle club also had a big month in September with the staging on the Winton MX Club Championships. The club work hard on getting a number of sponsor to cover the event. A good number of competitors lined up surpassing the inaugural event last year. Hopefully you all have seen that the V8 Supercars have released the 2014 Calendar and Winton has gained an early date on April 24 in 2014. We would assume the weather will being significantly better at this time of year and being away from Sandown will hopefully help us attract more people from Melbourne for the race. Next year we will have 400 km of racing and increase on the 360 format of 2013.

he recently run Supercheap Auto Bathurst saw Benalla Auto Club member Steven Richards proudly standing on the podium holding the Peter Brock Trophy after he and Mark Winterbottom won the event in the FPR Pepsi Max Crew Ford Falcon. It was 42 year old Richards third win in the Great Race, having previously tasted victory in 1998 and ‘99. After 2 of 3 rounds of the inaugural Pirtek Enduro Cup, Richards and Winterbottom sit third. Other members competing in the race were Taz Douglas and Dean Fiore. Douglas was driving in the Nissan Motorsport team with James Moffat in the #360 Yellow Hornet team Nissan Altima, and despite experiencing early handling issues, and having an engine mapping problem that hampered the car’s speed still finished a creditable 18th to be the highest finisher of the four Nissan’s. Fiore drove the Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Dodo Insurance Holden with Matt Halliday as co-driver, and after being inside the top 20 for most of the event ended up being the races only retirement from a mechanical DNF, expiring on Lap 145 of

161 with a gearbox failure. Richards and Douglas did double duty over the weekend, with the 1000 and Carrera Cup and Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series respectively. Driving his Laser Plumbing &
Electrical 911 GT3 Cup car, Richards qualified 4th, then followed that up with 4th in Race 1, 5th in Race 2 and then put in a big one in Race 3 to finish 3rd and go home 4th in the championship. Douglas was joined in the Development Series by an another BAC member Rodney Taz Douglas at Bathurst Ja Jane in his #777 Rodney Jane Ra Racing Ford Falcon FG. After qualifying Douglas st started 5th on the grid for a 13 lap race on Friday in his Im Image Racing/Avo Ford FG, aand come home 4th, howeever Saturday’s second race o over 12 laps saw him drop to 66th, but it was still a success-

ful weekend as he finished 4th in the round, and is 9th in the series. Jane Meanwhile qualified 23rd, and went about making up positions in the two races, firstly finishing 16th and then coming home 14th in the second, which left him 13th for the weekend and saw him move to 17th in the series. The only other BAC member on the Bathurst program was Nathan Pretty driving his Milwaukee Racing VE Holden in the Australian V8 Ute Racing Series, and it was a weekend he would care to forget. After qualifying with the 3rd fastest time, Pretty was excluded due to his V8 Ute being underweight, so
he started Race 1 from the rear of the 31 car grid, and then climbed to 17th in the opening race. Race 2 he made up one spot to finish 16th, then the third saw him starting from the same position, but he was then involved in an accident at Turn 1 when three utes tried to go through Hell Corner
at the same time, the result being chaos, with five utes damaged, including Pretty’s VE, and it saw the deployment of a safety car. The incident caused two retirements, the BAC entry continued and went on to finish 20th, which saw him go home 4th in the series.

RACING
The month of September had started with the annual Muscle Car Masters at the Sydney Motorsport Park on Father’s Day, with two Benalla Auto Club members in the Historic Touring Cars Group N categories. John Smallman had his 1600cc Ford Escort RS and finished 28th in qualifying for the 0-3500cc Group Nc races, but was not seen again all weekend. Tony Hubbard had his 5.7 litre Chev Camaro in the Historic Group Nc over 3500cc, and after qualifying

field Park. In front of a huge crowd when the Super Trucks made their return to NSW at Wakefield Park Raceway’s 4th round of the MRA Series on September 14/15, Sydney BAC member Ian Kegg competed in the NSW Excel Series.
Also on the day and while he wasn’t competing, Steven Richards left with a huge smile on his face after driving his father Jim Richards JPS BMW in the Heritage Laps.
Kegg was as usual one of the front runners and qualified 2nd, then finished Race 1 in the same position ahead of the reverse grid Race 2 when he started rear of grid and got up to third by race end.

The third race and Horswell finished 6th while Gizas took 8th, and then in their Trophy Race again Horswell took 6th and 14th outright, with Gizas just one spot further back. Sandown 500 On the same weekend September 14/15, the Sandown International Motor Raceway hosted the annual Bathurst 1000 warm-up race the Sandown 500, with several BAC members competing.

Nathan Pretty at Sandown
Bathurst winner Steve Richards put in a polished performance with Mark Winterbottom to finish 6th, while Dean Fiore took a very impressive 18th in the LDM Dodo Insurance Holden with Matt Halliday and after a troubled race in the Yellow Hornets Nissan Altima Taz Douglas finished 26th. In the Australian V8 Utes Racing Series round on the same program, Nathan Pretty took a good pole position in qualifying driving his Milwaukee Racing Holden VE, then finished second in Race 1, third in the second and turned it around to
In the third race he dropped a place to fourth, but then all hell broke loose in Race 4 with a multi car accident, and the results are currently under appeal.
Geoff Calvet at Wakefield
Wayne Horswell and Denis Gizas represented the club in the Superkarts, both competing in the 125cc Non Gearbox section. Qualifying saw Gizas 15th driving his Yellow Tail Wines kart, and Horswell 16th outright in his AASA/MRA Superkart Racing team entry.

Performance Car Mania There were several events on the weekend of September 21/22 that had BAC members competing, including the Performance Car Mania event at their home turf at Winton Raceway. In front of a huge and enthusiastic crowd, Perry Bullivant put his pedal to the metal and amid tyre smoke and tyre squeals had an enjoyable weekend. Improved Production Nationals/Qld ProdSports One Hour Enduro The Improved Production Touring Cars Nationals, Formula Vee Nationals and Queensland ProdSports One Hour Enduro were conducted on the weekend of September 28/29 at Morgan Park in Queensland with two Benalla Auto Club members competing. Bathurst member Terry Nightingale drove the TargaRacing BMW E46 M3 with car owner Brian Anderson in the ProdSport races, and in Saturday’s
warm up races Nightingale took his first pole position and went on to claim his first win in the 10 lap race by 20 seconds over the second car. In the One Hour enduro he and Anderson finished a creditable 3rd outright and first in class.

Wakefiel ld as a n attuu ral amphitheater p er llends ends iitends tself well to the Truck Racing. It was also the Final round of the MRA series which continues to grow and grow. 170 entries lined up for the MRA with great numbers in Superkarts, Excel’s and Pulsar has a combined grid of 20 which was fantastic seeing both series kicked off only a few months ago. We have worked hard with both groups to provide an avenue for people to get into affordable motorsport and these two classes look like the answer to that. Whilst a little bit of rain each morning probably knocked the crowd figures we still had a very decent turnout and it was pleasing to see that our plans for Traffic Management, Parking, Catering and Toilet facilities all handled the event well. Also in September we had the HSRCA All Historics. approximately 200 cars competed and the event had a feature race for Aussie Specials. Our new Garages built 18 months ago work great, it meant that we were able to house 140 people under cover between carports and Garages for this event. The Garages are also booked out for the upcoming Cobra Nationals. The Post Classic Bikes also had a race meetingg at Wakefield in September. They had over 170 bikes competing in their biggest
field at Wakefield and only secfield ond to the Barry Sheene event. o The event just scraped through the program as a number of riders had off ’s that required minor medical attention, but was the first event this year the club had made it through their full programme. We are seeing many cars entered in the Winton 300 using Wakefield for some testing of late. There look to be some very serious campaigns being put together this year and I am certain the NSW contigiant are looking to take back the trophy for a third year in a row. In October we have our National meeting for the year the Shannons nationals. Lining up will be the Australian Manufacturers Championship, Radical Cup, Suzuki Swifts, Formula Ford, HQ Holdens and NSW Production Touring. It will be very interesting to see NSW production Touring and AMC on the same program and ccompare where the NSW state th field sit against the National Car with N only o a few different e modification between the two b series. The event is being Televised on SBS Speedweek and live on the w IInternet on www.itvlive. ccom.au so on Sunday
the 20th October if you get a chance tune in and catch all teh action from Wakefield Park. Our AASA State Championship interest continues to grow. The 5.0L V8 Touring Car Association will join forces with the Brian Walden run Stock Cars and put on a combined race on. The two did a demonstration together at the Truck event and it went down a treat with competitors and spectators. The 5.0L guys are hoping for 11 cars which are all done in their original liveries such as the ford credit Falcon, Jack Daniel's Commodore, the Caltex AU, Perkins Castrol commodore VT and many more set to join the ranks. The fit perfectly with the GTA Stock Cars being imported by Brian Walden and with 4 on the water that should be here in time for November they could have as many as 8 stockcars. Also on the program will be the Trucks for their final round and the National Superkart Championship for AASA. The NSW superkart club are expecting in the vicinity of 60 superkart to converge on Wakefield for the event. 40 made their way to the first championships in Queensland and with more Victorians joining in for 2013 ahead of their turn to run the Championships in 2014 at Winton.

members who have had these street machine events under the spotlight since the Easternat riots in springvale 4 years ago. A few BAC members took to the track which included Perry Bullivant in his Torana taking out the Dyno Challenge and 3rd in the Powerskids. Other members were Joe Stickland and Chris Griffith who put forward entries and enjoyed the weekends activities. Undoubtedly the main attraction for competitors was the cruising with hundreds of cars lining up for each session. The crowd favourite was the Burnout competition and competition was certainly fierce with the Event taken out by Rick Fuller while

Dale Allcock took out the 6 cylinder class. In the drags local Winton resident Justin Robinson took out the 8 cylinder Grudge match drag races in his Torana. The major street machine media outlets all attend this years Performance Car mania and all had praise for the event with it now rating as one of the biggest Street Machine Car shows around. 2014 will see Winton host two Version with Performance Car Mania retaining its September spot on the calendar and a new event at Easter called Easter Car Mania will debut at Winton.

Wakefi trucks Track racing made a huge impact at Wakefield Park for its debut at the goulburn circuit on September 14/15 2013 combing with the ever popular MRA series. The Series returned to NSW its spiritual home for the first

time since the closure of Oran park. A large crowd was drawn to Wakefield to watch 6 trucks battle for round one of the 2013 Championship. The Trucks were lead by Charlie Zammit who swept all of the races but it was not a
runaway victory with Western Australia’s Rob Waters keeping him Honest. One of the crowd favourites was Frank Amoroso, who returned to the track after several year layoff. Amarosso

ield struggled in the slightly damp conditions and would regular end in a 360 before catching the spin and heading on his way without losing too much momentum. Steve Coulter
in the little SBR came home third for the round and bring up the rear was Fletcher Christians in his Diamond Rio that was marred with electrical problems all weekend.
Supporting the Trucks were MG’s, BMW E30’s , Super TT , Stock Cars and Pulsar & Excels. The Trucks return to Wakefield for their final round on November 23/24.

pitstop Round 2 of the Truck Racing championship barged its way into Winton raceway on the first weekend of October the NSW long weekend with 8 Trucks lining up on the Grid. Two extra Trucks made the grid over the Wakefield park round held just two weeks earlier with the SBR’s of Craig Yard and Kevin Anderson the new additions. It was a bustling affair and the Trucks put on a bif and barg show for the spectators who attended. With three SBR’s in the field it was a healthy mix of big and little truck. The Big Kenworth of Charlie Zammit backed up his Wakefield Form taking out round 2. Frank Amoroso who came to together with
accouple in the field in some wild racing saw Rob Waters DNF with damage after spare parts could not be sourced for the Kenworth from the Western Australian Daynite Racing Team. Steve Coulter in the SBR was second and set the Fastest lap of the race in the Truck Superprix. Fletcher Christian bounced back from his Wakefield drama to come home third in the Diamond Rio he was followed by the two Kara Kar Trailers SBR’s with Frank Amoroso just behind. The Support Categories also put on a good show Jason Collins taking out the Miniature racers ahead of Chad
Cotton the pair will team together in the Winton 300 Next month. Spud Wood took out the HQ’s before heading off to Bathurst for the V8 ute races ahead of South Australian Father and Son of Joel and Bruce (Father) Heinrich. The Heinrich will be part of a father and son race in the HQ’s at the 4 hour against other Father son combinations. In the Vic V8’s who made their second appearance at Winton for the year was won by Victor Argento, Victor was the only ford in the race ahead of a commodore gagle lead by Ray Seymour, Steve Jones had an off weekend in his Torana but still managed to win the Vic series. Super TT was taken out by BAC’s Corey Gooch who beat home Steve Murray and his Winton 300 teammate Daniel Van Der Heyden.

T
he 2013 Valvoline Winton 300 is shaping up to be one of the races of the year. Over 70 entries have been received for 55 places on the grid. The event is an all comers races with cars typically sedan based lapping in the ranges from 1 minute 32 seconds to 1 min 50 seconds on a unique Division system. there are three previous winners in the race. The #1 car of Chad Cotton who took out last years race in his Future races will line up again this this with Aussie Race Car driver Jase Collins. The 2011 winners and 2012 Pole sitters David Raddatz and Shane Otten will line up again, last year they lead early but had car overheating issues which caused the car to drop boost. They bounced back for a top 10 finish but it put pay to their race chances.
off D Des and The 1986 winner i d Carl C l Gibbs. Carl Gibbs has spent the last couple of years restoring his father’s Station which was driven to Victory in 1986 at the hands of Gibbs and Benalla Auto Club member Denis O’Brien. The are five Wakefield 300 winners in the field. They include the Otten and Raddatz MX5 along with Jeff Davies who will sit this year out are the only drivers to have won the double. One driver that has gone close to winning the double and has
won the last two Wakefield 300 wo and finished second in the last an two Winton 300 is Jake Shelley, tw he will once again team with his father Steve and try and h become back to back Australb ian Endurance Champions. ia Steve Anslow won the WakeS field 300 in 2010 driving with Ric Shaw Ri Sh in his Chevy powered RX7. Steve sat on pole at Winton in 2011 but had mechanical issues forcing him out of the event. Chris Clearihan is a former Wakefield 300 Winner he will line up with Kosi Kalatizdis in a future Racer. The man Clearihan won the Wakefield 300 with Nathan Jess is a two time Wakefield 300. He will line up in his Futurebusa with Matthew Thompson the pair ran in the lead for a number of laps last year until mechanical drama set it snapping a gear shifter.
Winton 300 Who will Win

SEPTEMBER 2013 There is a talented line up all the way down the field in the 2013 edition of the Valvoline Winton 300. A big BMW contingent will line up being lead by multiple 300 podium place getter Daniel Kapetanovic in an M3 plus Brian Anderson and Terry Nightingale who have had some enduro form together this year in an M3 and Nathan Geier and Phil Showers in another M3. A big E30 brigade will line up include E30 points leader Brian Burke, Enduro specialist Mitchell and Potter from Canberra, Kwong and thorncraft in the Watson Pharmacy replica car and 2011 fourth place finishers father and son team Sean and Graeme Bell. The MX5 Teams are coming in force for 2013. Three different Teams will field multiple cars. field two cars The MX5 Mania will field Raddatz/Otten car and the Cancian & Hay car. Cancian and Hay were last years pre race favourites but had multiple mechanical problems through the race. Deckspeed will field three Cars with regulars Michael Hall, Daniel Deckers, Luke Otten and Chris Deckers all part of the Team. Hall and Deckers last year finished 4th in the USA 25 hour race piloting an MX5 so have great level of Endurance pedigree behind them. Targa Rac-
ing have a massive effort with four cars entered. Chris Cough will lead the team charge and will looking to better his fifth place last year. Targa Racing swept their entire division last year and add in associate team members Peter and Robyn lacey’s MX5 the swarm of MX5 will be heard at Winton Raceway. The 300 races always require a little bit of luck going your way to get a result. One driver who was fresh out is Ross Wood. Ross piloted the Donut King HSV in 2010 race with Wagga’s Hayden Pullen. The pair had worked their way to the lead and with the inclement weather were fastest cars on a drying track enough to hold of a fast finish finish steve Anslow. But
a refuelling refuellin calculation error saw their pitstop pitsto blow out by two minutes dropping them back to third and the track now basked in sunlight allowed Anslow to pounce for third Ans with wi his much more powerful V8 RX7 taking away the final spot sp on the Podium. Wood returns this year in a Nissan re R31 R3 Skyline and will team up with former production Car champion Martin Doxey. Fuel cham consumption will be the major consu issue for this pair. This years Race Winner could come com from anywhere in the field. eld Last years winner started seventh on the grid and for seve 2014 throw in 3 times Wakefield 300 pole sitters Adam & Craig Crai Burgess in their GTR, Future Futur Race Champions Jade and Rod B Barnes, The amazing Skelta of Mark Mackay and Ray Vandersee M and the EV EVO of Production Car front runners Dylan and Dave Thomas D and this race ra is the hottest contest in Australian motorsport.

JAME Hunt's Winton Diary
N
ovember 25 1978. For the past two years I have been fortunate enough to receive end of season invitations to race in countries I have not visited before. Last year I went to Mexico City but was unable to race because the track did not have an international permit. This year it was Australia that lured me away from my home in Spain. Part of the invitation was that I was able to take an ‘entourage’ with me. I managed to persuade the Australians that it was extremely important for me to have my own mechanic, my manager and a ‘gofer’ to accompany me on such an expedition, and I was thus able to give Ray ‘Kojak’ Grant, my brother ‘Norman’ and an old friend John Richardson a two week holiday. Ray has been with me at McLaren for the past three years and I was delighted that the Wiener gave him the time off to come with me. Our farewell party at Heathrow, hosted by three other New Zealand McLaren mechanics, complete with ‘Maori safety boots’(the inevitable flip-flops) was fairly indicative of the hospitality we were to receive over the next two weeks. The long flight out was made pretty painless by the generosity of Malaysian Airlines who looked after us outstandingly well. Their hostesses were of a standard unequalled by any other airline I have ever used before and we all fell in love every time the crew changed. Our base in Australia was Melbourne and we spent a couple of days there on arrival doing a few inter-
28
views and a television chat show. The race was to be held at a circuit called Winton which I discovered to be a tiny village about 120 miles north-east of Melbourne. In fact it is so small I believe it doesn’t even have a pub, and anyone who knows Australia will immediately realise how small it must be. (Which reminds me of a story; Larry Perkins, who is alive and well and living in Melbourne temporarily retired from racing, told
me about the place he comes from, Cowangie. I asked him whether Cowangie had a pub and when he said that it didn’t I asked how the inhabitants of the town survived. He explained that only two people live in Cowangie now. There used to be more, but the nearest pub is 20 miles away and they all got killed on the way home!) The nearest town to Winton is Benalla and it was due to the enterprise of the Benalla Auto Club that I was invited to compete there. The Auto Club is determined to make Winton the best motor racing circuit in Australia and they have hired a promoter, one Ken Campbell, to organise money-making projects so that they can extend the circuit (currently a very tight 1-mile track) to about 3.5 miles and build a proper pit and ga-

ES rage facilities. The circuit is extremely safe with vast open spaces for run-off areas and they have plenty of land on which to build their circuit extensions. Robert Langford, the CSI safety inspector, visited the track prior to my arrival and gave it his blessing together with an International Permit. His only significant comment was the obvious one - ‘there is some catch fencing there, but it’s been placed to stop kangaroos getting onto the track rather than to stop you hitting anything.’ The race I was competing in was the Rose City 10,000 for Formula 5000 cars. There is a thriving Australian Formula 5000 championship which had just been won by Graham McRae and this race was just an extra one put on by the Benalla Auto Club a few years ago. There were a few familiar names entered apart from McRae, such as John McCormack and Kevin Bartlett, and it was good to see a McLaren M23 again, although this one was powered by a Leyland 5-litre engine. I believe it was the chassis Peter Revson used to win the 1973 British Grand Prix, now raced successfully by McCormack. Qualifying went very well with Kojak acting as liaison between my wild gesticulations and the Elfin team. I was driver the car usually campaigned by Garrie Cooper (who designed and built it) and Vern Schuppan and it was a nice change to be able to throw a car around a bit. The quickest way in an F1 car is the most precise way, but a 5000 car can be much more fun to drive. I managed to get it together for the second
qualifying session and sit on the pole for the first time for over a year which pleased me probably even more than the Elfin team. Next up on the grid were McCormack’s McLaren and the Lola of Alfredo Costanzo followed by Jon Davison’s Lola, Kevin Bartlett’s Brabham and the rest. On race day the grid was completed by a driver who unfortunately because of his religion is allowed to do no work at all on a Saturday. This means he is never able to qualify and always has to start from the back of the grid. Talk about making it difficult! Race day was gloriously hot and I’m pleased to say a crowd of about 15,000 came through the gates. The race was a bit of a procession because McCormack had a brake problem early on and I was able to keep the others a respectable distance behind. It was wonderfully short, only 30 laps, but gratifying to get a win at the end of a disastrous season. In time-honoured Australian tradition we had a wonderful party after the race, moving from hospitality tent to hospitality tent until long into the night. Each sponsor seemed determined to outdo all the others by the size of their steaks and the quantity of their refreshment. Suffice it to say not many of them would have had much change on a sale or return basis! From Melbourne we moved to Coolangatta, near Surfers Paradise, for a few days. Apart from hoping to get some sun, the main purpose of
our visit was to see Kojak’s mother who had not seen her son for eight years. I am told that his hair was a bit shorter when they last met but luckily his fame had gone before him and his mother did not collapse when she saw him. Unfortunately it poured with rain all the time we were there but we were entertained lavishly by ‘Mrs Kojak’, despite the beer strike in Queensland, as she had wisely brought in some stocks from over the border. The weather in Melbourne was superb on our return there and we spent a lazy two days with our hosts, whose hospitality never wavered. This is a good opportunity to thank all those involved with the organisation of our visit, particularly Ken Campbell and his hard-working assistant Peter Voyle. Rhonda Matthews, who accompanied us on our tour of Queensland and who acted as our ‘nanny’ for the whole trip, John ‘Davo’ Davison who came with us to Queensland and the far east and who gave us our official introduction to Australian slang, and finally to Mark Adie who was employed to kick people who gave us any trouble. We would have loved to have seen him in action with his size 12 riding boots but he was unable to give us a demonstration because nobody gave us any problems. (In Mexico we had three bodyguards armed with machine guns, etc., but the Australians clearly thought we only warranted an expert in unarmed combat!) Now the holiday time is over and we will be starting to test the new Wolf before long. I obviously can’t say anything about it yet but am confident we will get some results in 1979.
