W
elcome to Wakefield Park Raceway and the first round of the 2014 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship Series and the Saturday YMF Loan Australian FX-Superbike Championship.
As you can see from the names of this event our weekends are made up of two series on consecutive days. The Saturday YMF Loan AFX-SBK is a mirror image 16 race event that leads into the premier Sunday Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship round. This gives our competitors, Teams and spectators have two opportunities over the weekend to see and or partake in two full days of the best racing action in the country. We decided it was time to lift the profile of the Saturday series and are very pleased that our longest series sponsor YMF Loan and Yamaha took the opportunity to have their great names on the front of the AFXSBK championship which will lend both prestige and importance to the Saturday championship series. Swann Insurance needs no introduction for motorcyclists being the country’s oldest and biggest motorcycle insurer. We believe it’s a bit of a coup to have them as the naming rights sponsor as those of us who have been around long enough would remember the Swann Series from the 80’s. It is fondly regarded by most as the best Australian road racing series in the sports long history and after a 27 year absence from motorcycle racing they have finally decided to once again lend their great name to another motorcycle road racing series. This weekend is shaping up as a big one for the sport of motorcycle racing in this country, in the premier Superbike class for the first time in many years all of the factory teams that are racing are present on the same grid and in big numbers as well. It’s been many years since this country has a 32 Superbike rider field with all the best riders in the country going head to head. Same goes for the Supersport field 29 top notch young privateers all ready to showcase their stuff in front of the Superbike team managers hoping for one of the top rides for next year. Our biggest and most popular class Formula Oz has once again been a sell out with no spare grids on the track. Then we have our ever popular Pro-Twins and Nakedbike class, a class for mainly Euro sports bikes that sound like rolling thunder as the zoom past. Last but not least is the new FX 300 Ninja Cup class that is squarely aimed as a very affordable class that caters for both entry level and more experienced racers wanting to race in a completely level playing field class of even performance motorcycles. Anyway we hope you enjoy the weekends racing action and leave Wakefield Park having enjoyed watching the countries best racers in action.

T
he The excitement is continuing for the opening round of the 2014 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship and the 2014 YMF Loan AFX-SBK Championship. And as the final preparations are completed before the Wakefield Park Motor Racing Circuit roars into action this weekend, naming right sponsors Swann Insurance and YMF Loan are more excited than most. Speaking openly of the decision to come on board as the major sponsor for the 2014 Australasian Superbike Championship, Glenn Rosbrook from Swann Insurance said that they are looking forward to the series and the opportunities the

new partnership will create. “We are excited – it’s the first time we have been associated as a major naming rights sponsor for a series – for any series, for quite a time so we’re pretty pumped about being the major naming rights sponsor,” he said. “Swann’s previous focus and major focus over the last 10 – 20 years has been selling or promoting our product through our intermediary part-
ners and manufacturer partners, and we’ve grown that business to a point where it’s very very strong. “So the obvious next step for us was to look at the direct-to-customer channel and it’s about our strategies in getting our brand back out there in that direct space to raise awareness and to build our direct presence.” Rosbrook explained that it was important when choosing which event to sponsor for the Swann name to be associated with the best road racing event in the country. “Our strong preference is to align our name with the premier road race series in Australia, and Terry summed it up pretty well when he explained the events of the past couple of months as a per-

2014 YMF AFX-SBK small“So we came on board as the major naming rights sponsor and there was a whole lot of activity happening behind the scenes where the ASBK was facing some challenges and some issues and all the cards seemed to fall in line with each other.
YMF Loan Managing Director Brad Ryan, said the company is very happy to be continuing its longterm support of the 2014 YMF Loan AFX-SBK Championship.
“We saw one team after another announce that they were moving across to the ASC and the Swann Insurance series so we are really pleased with how everything has come to fruition and we’re really excited for round 1 of the 2014 series.” For YMF Loan, its sponsorship of the 2014 YMF Loan AFX-SBK Championship continues a long
“We are delighted to be onboard again in 2014 – it’s a very worthwhile cause that goes to the hearts and minds of the riding public,” he said. “We have been onboard for many years – not always in YMF format, but even before that when it was as Yamaha, we would be one of Terry’s longest terms supporters and biggest supporters over the years. “We are very happy to have that relationship that we can talk openly
and honestly with each other and we can end up with a really good outcome for all parties.” Ryan added that the support is aimed at supporting different levels of activity within the series, and particularly aims at grassroots racing. “We believe it is a terrific partnership and that the riders and spectators get a lot out of our sponsorship. “We’d like to think that we’re helping grassroots racing by way of this contribution.” For more information about the opening round, visit the ASC website via http://www.fxsuperbikes. com.au/.

Y
amaha Australia’s championship winning road racing team, YRT, will field an impressive four rider outfit for season 2014 to contest the Australasian

Kev Curtain storyNew comer Robbie Bugden will join 2013 members Kevin Curtain, Rick Olson and Cru Halliday in a very strong line up with all riders to compete on the thundering Yamaha R1 in the ASC Superbike category. Queensland based Bugden will take the seat vacated by 2013 champion, Broc Parkes, who has moved to Europe to contest the Moto GP in 2014. Bugden finished third in the 2013 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), will make the move to YRT and the ASC series for 2014 and will be an exciting addition to the powerhouse Yamaha team.

and Yamaha Australia has again shown their support for road racing in Australia. Yamaha Australia are huge supporters of all aspects of racing in this country and it is an honour to represent the brand in road racing. The R1 and R6 are high quality road bikes th that can easily be upgraded to championsh ship winning road race machines. “W “With the revamped ASC and our single focus on the Superbike category, 2014 fo pr promises to be a great season for YRT,” Re Redding concludes. THE BEST OF THE BEST S he opening round kicks off at Wakefield Park this weekend, with the 2014 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship and the 2014 YMF Loan AFXSBK Championship are both ready for action.

“We knew it was definitely going to increase – we anticipated that, but right now it’s looking like we are heading towards 150 entries and if we get up to that, it’s back to the days of five, six or seven years ago,” he said.
Huge rider entry numbers, a host of new sponsors and cranked up live-streaming services are just a few of the indications to suggest that the series’ will feature the best road racing action seen in Australia for years.
“It’s hectic – it’s so busy, we have now reached over 140 entries which is fantastic – 30 in Superbike, 29 in Supersport and 25 in the new FX 300 Ninja Cup class which is just excellent and we’re looking forward to the first round of the Swann Series.”
Close to 150 entries across all classes have been received for the opening round which will take place at the iconic Wakefield Park Motor Racing Circuit in New South Wales from 14-16 March.
The reintroduction of Swann Insurance as a major sponsor of road racing in Australia is particularly pleasing for
Speaking about the preparations for the season starter, ASC series promoter Terry O’Neill said that the increased support for the series in 2014 has been higher than anticipated.

SET FOR BATTLE O’Neill, and he hopes its support, together with continued support from YMF Loan, will elevate the series to levels seen in years gone by. “We are very lucky. The Saturday series is the AFX-SBK which we have retained our previous sponsor in YMF Loan and that is separate but is a mirror image to the Sunday which will be the Swann Series,” he said. “I must admit I am very excited about having Swann back as a major event sponsor. “They haven’t sponsored a series since the Swann Series back in 1987, so to have them come back on board is a huge vote of confidence in our series and where we are going. “The actual name ‘The Swann Series’ brings back fond memories of everyone from that era of road racing and highlights how great road racing can be in this country. Having Swann back for the
Sunday series means we can brand it as something being as great as it was back then.” According to O’Neill, Wakefield Park is the best venue in the country to stage the opening round. “For spectators there is no better track in Australia. It’s like a giant fishbowl where it doesn’t matter where you stand or sit, you can see the rest of the track and it’s absolutely fantastic. “For rider’s it is an extremely technical track – this is a track you need to learn to make the most of it, and the guys who will win are the guys who have spent time on the track and got used to it. “Having said that, with six races over the weekend there is plenty of time for people to catch up and get on the pace so from a racing perspective I think it will produce some of the most exciting racing we have seen for many a year.”

WHAT THE RIDERS

to the challenge of it and to racing a few of the guys that I haven’t raced against in a number of years – that’s a challenge in itself. “It’s a matter of us adapting to the specifications of the ASC and
The time for talk is over and as we finally get into the racing action, it is actions on the track that will speak louder than words. We had a quick chat to some of the riders set to battle it out this weekend, to see how they are feeling ahead of the opening round: Wayne Maxwell – Honda “I’m not feeling too bad – just chipping away at it – heading towards Wakefield Park and ready to take on the first round. “I’m definitely looking forward to this weekend – it’s going to be challenging with only limited preparation and I am carrying a bit of an injury, but I am looking forward

we’ve seen Glenn (Allerton) who was runner up to me in the ASBK last year go to the test and be quite a lot faster than a few of the other people. It’s just a matter of us adapting – we’ll get through this weekend and I am sure we will only get stronger. “I think Glenn and a number of the other guys
will make it a really interesting competition. I think the parity of the bikes is not something that we’re used to. But it is what it is and that just adds to the excitement and the challenge. Glenn Allerton – BMW “I’m feeling pretty confident going into this weekend’s first round of the ASC. We’ve had a really good off-season, and the testing that we did a couple of weeks ago shows that we have got a really strong package and I’m really looking forward to going racing and trying to get out in front, and get my Pirelli Dynotech Motul BMW at the front. “I don’t know who my biggest challengers are and it’s going to be difficult to say. Obviously the Australian Champion from last year in Wayne Maxwell and all the Team Yamaha riders are going to be hard to beat. “So the challengers are going to come in many different forms because it is a stacked field, and the best I can do is just concentrate on what I’m doing and get the most
Round 1 March 14-16 2014
SAY FOR ROUND 1 out of the package that I have in the BMW and I think we’ll be fine. “It’s really hard – especially for someone like me who has spent most of their life dedicated in trying to be a professional racer and at the moment with the current state things are in. “This year is a step in the right direction having one really strong series and if we can get some stability and continuity with the series, then potential sponsors will want to invest in the series that has a long term plan and can promote not only the products that we ride but also the racers themselves as normal everyday sportspeople.”
Kevin Curtain – Yamaha “It’s always better having different competition coming into a series. I guess we’ve dominated the series for quite a few years now and I guess a lot of other people are thinking I’d like to have a go at it and see what they can do. “There is a bit of hype going into it, but I don’t really worry about that stuff anymore – I just like getting in there and pressing go from early in the season because that’s where it all counts. “If you think I can relax going into the first round and have a go half way through the series, it’s not going to win you a championship. Matthew Walters – Kawasaki “I am fairly nervous – I don’t know really what to expect! I haven’t had the greatest results at Wakefield Park in recent times so hopefully I can possibly turn that around this weekend.
“I think I am normally nervous, but this year especially due to how many riders and how many good riders there are, the field definitely has some depth about it and it is going to be more difficult to win races. “It motivates me because if you can beat these guys, you are going to go alright overseas. And to be the best here in Australia is certainly not going to be an easy task in this class now – with all the good riders in one class it will make good racing and will hopefully make for a better race series. “It would be nice to keep the number one plate and I don’t think that it is out of the question, but I think that my goal is more or less try to be in the top-5 finish in the championship – that would be realistic for us and with our team. “We obviously don’t have the backing that Yamaha and Honda have but we do have enough to be at the front end and win races.”

ultiple national champion Glenn Allerton was quickest in today’s official Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship pre-season test at Wakefield Park. The Next Gen Motorsports BMW rider set a scorching 58.5s at the technical Goulburn-based circuit – the lone rider to break into the 58s bracket and unofficially half a second ahead of the field. Fresh from his 11-15 finishes with BMW Motorrad Italia in World Superbikes at Phillip Island, Allerton was aboard a brand new ASC Superbike-spec HP4 on Tuesday equipped with the series’ latest specification Dunlop control tyres. Kawasaki privateer Sean Condon was also consistently quick aboard his ZX10R, second overall with a 59.0s. It was a promising performance for the New South Welshman entering his second season on the Superbike. Superbike rookie Cru Halliday was another rising star to feature toward the top of the unofficial time sheets, third overall with a 59.1s lap time. Halliday was immediately quick back aboard the YZF-R1 following a year in Supersport, and out-pacing highly credentialed teammates Robbie Bugden and Kevin Curtain.

Last year’s ASBK Superbike Privateer Cup winner Glenn Scott was fourth on his InsureMyRide Honda at 59.4s, riding an ASC-spec bike that the team only took delivery of last week. He’s expecting an SP model before the season opener next month. ASBK number three Bugden completed the top five in his second outing for Yamaha, half a second in arrears of Halliday at 59.6s as he continues to adapt to the Yamaha. It was the Queenslander’s first laps at Wakefield Park since 2004. Honda-mounted privateer Chris Trounson matched Bugden’s time for equal fifth, while Kawasaki rookie Mike Jones was seventh with a 1m00.0s. Jones’ lap was identical to multiple ASC champion Curtain, who also posted a 1m00.0s after experimenting with set-up throughout the test. Confident he can apply his best laps from last year, the veteran opted to search for a refined setting today – eventually returning to his settings from last season. The test saw the welcome return of former Australian Supersport Champion Troy Herfoss aboard a borrowed Honda in ninth at 1m00.2s, he too anticipating delivery of a CBR1000RR SP before round one. He’s also been
linked to replacing Josh Hook at Team Honda Racing following his injuries sustained at Phillip Island. Beau Beaton was back onboard a Ducati in ASC trim, setting a 1m00.4s late in the afternoon after over a season with Racer’s Edge Suzuki. Beaton was pitted with long-time Ducati campaigner Craig McMartin, who himself posted a 1m00.5s on his ProTwins Panigale. Cube Racing Kawasaki rider Ben Henry spent much of the day aboard Pirellis he used at Phillip Island last weekend, before slotting in a set of ASC Dunlops at the end of the day. His fastest lap was a 1m01.0s. Another rider quick during the test was veteran Phil Lovett, the Kawasaki standout lapping at a highly respectable 59.6s on his Formula Oz entry. Allerton’s teammate Ben Nicolson posted a 1m01.0s on his Formula Oz bike – both using Pirelli tyres. In Supersport Yamaha duo Aaron Morris and Callum Spriggs were fastest with 1m00.9s laps, heading local Michael Lockart with 1m01.3s and fellow Kawasaki rider Aaron Gobert at 1m01.6s. Fastest unofficial Kawasaki Insurances FX-300 Ninja Cup lap belonged to Australian 250 Production Champion Brandon Demmery at 1m10.4s.
