W
hat a race the Winton 300 was. When there was so much controversy about the changes to the division times and compulsory Pitstop there was a lot of muttering that one or the other division would be disadvantaged. But a pass for the lead with 4 laps to go between Chad Cotton (division 2) and Nick Cancian (Division 1) meant the first time in history a Division 1 car had take the win and by such a small margin. It was a magnificent drive by Nick Cancian who rattled of fastest lap after fastest lap and with 5 laps to go put the fastest lap of the race in. The Winners Nick Cancian and Rob Hay in there MX5 were awarded the Michael Ronke trophy. The trophy was presented by Adam Ronke and for ever more will be handed over to the winners of the Winton 300. The trophy standing at neary a meter tall will adorn the winners names and be on permanent display at Winton Raceway in tribute to Michael Ronke for his dedicated work for Grassroots motorsport. 2013 was the first year we have introduced livestreaming to the Internet for the Winton 300. It was certainly a hit with reports of people watching from India, London, USA, Russia and New Zealand as well as people from all over Australia. The feedback was it was terrific and the coverage first rate. The diversity of cars was amazing. The car of choice seemed to be a mx5 but they range from Nb’s to Nc’s normally aspirated to turbo powered, BMW E30’s BMW M3’s, Falcons XR8, Mazda RX7, Datsun 1200, Mini Cooper JCW, Future Races, Future Busa, EVO’s, Holden Commodore and even a Skelta G-Force. In all 18 different types of cars made the start line. The unique division system means that just about anyone can compete. The feedback from competitors was incredible, Many suggesting it was the best event they had been to. We had competitors from NSW , Queensland and Victoria. The 2014 Valvoline Wakefield 300 just continues to grow and grow. A total of 98 entries were recieved for the event which means to accomodate everyone we have split the race in two. The Wakefield 300 and the B Main which will be over 280km. The split has welcomed some of the Division 6 and 7 cars back into the race which from an organiser point of view is very pleasing because these cars dont get to see much endurance racing and the Valvoline Wakefield 300 provides plent of room for them. Both races will be live streamed on motorsportstv.com.au and televised nationaly on SBS speedweek programme. 17 different manufactures will line up in the 2014 Valvoline Wakefeild 300. Showing that this event is one of the most diverse races on the planet. Its Australia’s version of the famous Nurburg 24 hour and like the massive German event the competitors love it. The quaity of the field in 2014 is at its highest, with over 20 cars that could possibly win the event, being fastest on Saturday doesn’t mean your looking the goods with the Pole man never winning the Wakefield 300. A big thanks must go to Valvoline who have come on board as the event Sponsors. Their support means we can do fantastic things with the race, so if you get a chance buy some Valvoline Oil for your car and support those who support motorsport. Lastly a thank you to our tireless officials, this event has grown in size and now takes a small army of people to put it together. Around 100 officials will voulenteer their time to put this event on starting at 6:30am and finishing around 6:00pm they do a great job for our sport.

2013 WINTO Arguably Best Endro of T
he 2013 Valvoline Winton 300 was a huge success last weekend at Winton Raceway in north eastern Victoria, with may suggesting it was the most exciting endurance race of all time. The race was eventually won by a Mazda MX5 driven by Nick Cancian/Rob Hay, from defending champion Chad Cotton and Jase Collins (Future Racer) and the father and son team Steve and Jake Shelley
6
(Mitsubishi Evo 10). For the Shelleys it was a As the race entered its concluding stages it looked as if Cotton and Collins were going to greet the flag first, the Alexander/Heath Nissan Pulsar shed a wheel at Turn 9 and triggered a safety
car with just 12 laps remaining. Once the Safety Car left the track there was an eight lap sprint to the finish, with Cotton leading and Cancian well down in the field, but he was on a charge and hit the lead 4 laps from the finish, recording the fastest lap of the race and new race lap record, 1m:32.7206 secs. The Shelley’s did well to finish third, for their Evo was blowing smoke for the entire race, after they had fitted an engine from the wreckers without even touch-

ON 300 f All Time ing it, and they were running on grooved tyres and not the slicks like most other front runners. Overall it was a race of high attrition, with 30 of the 50 starters greeting the chequered flag after 3 hours, 2 minutes and 46 seconds of racing. There were many teams that could be considered unlucky. Firstly, Nathan Jess and Matty Thomson in their Future Busa in particular, as they were on top from the first practice session on Friday.
Jess built a car he was convinced could win the race from Division 1, and he certainly had the car to do so. He jumped to the front from pole and after just two laps was seven seconds ahead, had then built up a huge lead until lap 11 when they were forced to retire with a broken axle. After starting second on the grid the Phillip Showers/ Nathan Geier BMW M3R retired after just three laps with an unknown cause. The Brian Anderson/Terry
Nightingale BMW E46 M3 was one of eleven cars Division One, which was going to make their job much harder, but then it got worse as the car only lasted three laps of qualifying when it broke an engine mount, and subsequently saw them 17th on the grid. Anderson started the race from the rolling start and was doing a great job in his stint, picking up seven places to put them into the top 10, and then on Lap 12 the safety car was deployed for the first
7
Valvoline Wakefield 300
of five interventions. But the Sydney driver immediately dived into the pits to get one of the two stops out of the way, and that then saw Nightingale take the wheel and emerge in 35th position. It was then the start of a great stint by Nightingale as he overtook more than 30 cars in 20 laps, as he carved his way through the traffic and worked his way back to the lead lap and second to the effective race leader, the event newcomer, the Skelta GForce of Mark Mackay/Ray
8
Vandersee. As he was closing in on the Skelta the M3 finally stopped at Turn 9 at the rear of the circuit on lap 31, causing the 3rd safety car of the race as it was towed back to the pits where it was found an alternator had failed. David Raddatz/Shane Otten were also forced out with a hose from the oil pump fracturing on Lap 44, Glenn Townsend/ Anthony after figuring prominently in their Lotus Elise went out on Lap 90 when looking like a possible podium finisher with a fuel pump failure. Having never finished a 300 with
March 1 & 2 2014
their Nissan GTR, the Burgess father and son team switched to their Mazda RX7, and were looking good to break the drought as they were running strong throughout until Lap 90 of 100 when a diff failure sidelined them. As the race was being run for the inaugural Valvoline Winton 300, the sentimental favourite was Adam Ronke, one of two sons of the late Mick Ronke in his Tampered Motorsport Mazda RX7 powered by a 5.7 litre Holden V8 with his good mate Warren Sheehan as co-driver. The car was only finished being built as late as the Friday evening, and it subsequently ran without
missing a beat in Saturday practice, qualifying where it finished 12th, Sunday morning warm-up, and then in the race Ronke was running comfortably behind the Shelley’s until Lap 7when it was forced out with power steering failure. There were seven different race leaders during the event, with Jess/ Thomson, Charda/Charda in the V8 Ford Falcon V8 Future Tourer, Cotton/ Collins, Mackay/Vandersee in the Skelta G-Force - the same car that competed at Pikes Peak in the hands of Jeff Denmeade - Augustine/Defanis Datsun 1200, Shelley/Shelley and of course Cancian/Hay. The cause of the second safety car was a grass fire on the infield, after David Stillwell (grandson of the late and great Bib Stillwell lost an exhaust system (pictured left). The top three placegetters all completed 100 laps, while Mackay/Vandersee, Kapetanovic/Sugden (BMW 328), Herberstein/Allen (BMW M Coupe), first of the lady competitors Linda Devlin and Henry Draper (JWC Morris Cooper), Quince/Harris (Mazda MX5) and Deckers/Luke Otten (Mazda MX5) in 9th, were all one lap down Divisional winners were Cancian and Hay in Division 1 and Cotton/Collins in Division 2.
After starting 22nd, Glenn Kenneday and Scott Andrews won Division 3 and finished 6th outright in an E30 BMW. First time racers, father and son David and Robert Viner won division 4 in a Targa Racing MX5, while the winner of Division 5 was Phil Portea and Chris Walton driving a tampered Motorsport Mazda MX5, and Division 3 was won by Del Solar/Newton in a Hyundai Sonarta. Another new innovation was the
9
Valvoline Wakefield 300
History Repeat Sydney young guns Jake Shelley and Michael Shaw scored back to back wins in the Wakefield 300 at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park on Sunday, in a race that as usual had a bit of everything before the chequered flag greeted the 34 survivors after 137 laps of the 2.2km circuit. Shelly and Shaw drove their Deputy.Com Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, and they finished 2 laps ahead of the early pacesetter’s Andrew Macpherson and Ben Porter in the Imak / Kwikmit Lotus Exige S, and another lap ahead of the third placed David Krusa and Daniel Kapetanovic in the Hiretech / Peak RPM BMW M3. Behind the BMW were two more cars on the same lap, with 2010 winners David Rattatz/Shane Otten fourth in the Natsoft/MX5 Mania, and 2011 winner Steve Anslow in his Website Essentials 6 litre Chev powered Mazda RX7, with Queensland’s Lindsay Stone as co-driver, in what was his first ever car race.
10
While the event was run under a heavy cloud throughout, it was rain free, as opposed to last year when it was run in torrential rain throughout, and there were 13 safety car periods, and this year only two. This year’s race in its 8th year created an enormous amount of interest right around the nation, attracting a record 47 starters, with drivers from four states and one from Papua New Guinea. Of the 95 drivers, there were an amazing 45 Wakefield 300 rookies. The Wakefield 300, premier event on the Wakefield Park calendar has its own unique regulations in place to make the race more exciting, safer and cost effective for competitors. One such rule is refuelling, where there is a compulsory five minute stop for all competitors. Qualifying for the Wakefield 300 is
March 1 & 2 2014
ts in 2013 important with its unique system of divisions within the race , based on lap times. The #1 division was most important, for cars that lapped under 1 minute 4secs went into Division 1. However, all cars in Division 1 had to make two compulsory fuel stops. Qualifying saw the Macpherson/Porter Lotus fastest with an amazing 1m.02.5483secs, from Nick Cancian and Rob Hay in a Mazda MX5 with a 1m.04.2739sec, Anslow/Stone third in the RX7 Chev (1m.04.7165sec), and fourth father and son Adam and Craig Burgess in their Nissan GTR (1m.04.7169sec). The 10 ten shoot-out followed and saw the Burgess on pole, from Macpherson/Porter, another father and son team and 2012 runners-up David and Dylan Thomas third in the CXC Global Evo 10 ahead of Anslow/Stone and Shelley/Shaw 5th. There was however drama as the cars lined up on the grid for the rolling start, for Anslow was towed off the track and back into the pits with
a fuel leak. Anslow said later they filled the car right to the top, and to conserve fuel did no warm-up lap and pushed the car to the grid, and as a result it was just over-full. From the start Burgess and Macpherson jumped away from the pack which included Thomas, Shaw, Mark Higgins (Evo) and Raddatz while Anslow rejoined the race last, but on the lead lap. An early unscheduled stop was made by Raddatz in the MX5 Mania entry with a loss of power, but it was found to be a turbo line that had popped off, though they dropped a lap. It got worse for Anslow, as he had to take a drive through penalty for speeding on pit lane, but it was a great drive for he worked his way up to the front and led for a period before making his stop and handing over to Stone who drove like a full time driver to get back near the front. Macpherson got past Burgess and steadily increased his lead, having to get a big gap knowing
11
Valvoline Wakefield 300
he had two stops to make, and he in fact pitted on lap 48 and put Porter in, eventually regaining the lead. The Wakefield 300 curse continued for Burgess as the GTR ground to a halt mid-lap and into retirement with a suspected drive train problem. Another bad luck story came from the Thomas entry, as firstly a throttle pedal snapped with David at the wheel, and they lost 5 min in pits. Then a lapped car turned in on Dylan and they were forced to retire with front end damage to the Evo. Two-time race winner Nathan
12
Jess was another very unlucky, for along with Victoria’s Matthew Thompson they fought hard from grid position 12 in their Canberra Hydraulics Future Racer, and looked possible winners but shortly after their compulsory stop had to return to the pits with a fuel tank issue, losing a further 6 minutes, but then a masterful drive saw them finish 6th. The Raddatz/Otten MX5 had another issue in the second half of the race with Otten at the wheel, as it was noticeably slowing, as Otten explained. “We were only just off the lead lap until our early CPS at lap
49 where we jumped the entire field, after cleansing we were leading,” Otten said. “The car was great or awful when the Inhibitor was falsely activating. For some unknown reason it wouldn’t allow me to use any of the power range from 5 to 7000 rpm. “After 40 odd laps of torture using all 6 gears to stay under 5000 rpm at all times I found that turning the ignition off and on in 6th down main would reset it and bring her back to life,” Otten said. “We then rocketed back from 15th after leading back to 3rd in the last 15 or 20
March 1 & 2 2014
laps.” Otten’s drive back through the pack was masterful. The quiet achiever of the whole weekend had to be Krusa and Kapetanovic in the BMW. After starting 11th they stayed out of trouble and worked their way up to third following on from 9th last year at their first attempt. Macpherson set after Shelley once he got back on track but the Lotus had developed a bad misfire, so it was game over, but what really beat him was the two stops. Shelley and Shaw were another to stay out of trouble. They were always near the front, ahead of the one- stoppers, and when Porter pitted for their second stop and handed the Lotus back to Macpherson on L94, they seized the opportunity and were never in danger of defeat and thoroughly deserve their victory. Winners of Divisions were Macpherson/Porter Division 1, Shelley Shaw Division 2, Neil Halls/Daniel Byron in another Natsoft/MX5 Mania Mazda MX5 Division 3 in one of the drives of the race after starting 27th they also finished 7th outright, and Byron had a gear
shifter brake and drove the final 20 laps stuck in 4th gear. The Division 4 winner was another Mazda MX5, for Greg Tasker and Sam Silvestro, Division 5 to Albury’s Ross and Ethan Wilson in a Ford Falcon XR8 and Division 6 went to Wagga brothers Shane and Glenn Baker in a Proton Satira.

Endurance Series, the Valvoline Winton 300 at the Winton Motor Raceway in rural Victoria. “I did the Winton event with my father-in-law “to-be”, Geoff Stockley, less
than 1 month prior to the wedding. We had an issue with the diff, and had to run the car at a very slow pace, and while we were accredited with a DNF, it was in fact a 31st placed finish,” Denovan said.
Last year, Denovan and Stockley returned to Goulburn for the Wakefield 300, and after qualifying 13th, were forced to make an unscheduled pitstop on just the fifth lap with a fuel leak. After that issue was rectified they returned to the track down in 46th position, and Stockley then drove the car up to position 15th when they pitted on lap 60 for their CPS, which saw them refuel and rejoin with fresh tyres and with Denovan behind the wheel. “By the 5th lap in my stint, the tyres were over pressured as we started with the wrong pressure, the car was understeering, oversteering… it was a pig to drive. To gain as much track position as possible, I had to drive the car at 110%...Silly me, I didn’t think about fuel consumption. “Even though we had the problems and didn’t finish in the top 10 like we wanted to, we still had a fantastic weekend, and we’re really looking forward to the 2014 Wakefield 300. The benefactor of Denovan spending more time running his MRA company and less time behind the wheel is Stockley, for he will be driving the Commodore throughout the season.

International Flavour to the 300 This coming weekend's 2014 Valvoline Wakefield 300 to be conducted at Wakefield Park, now takes on an international flavour with the announcement from Peugeot 205 Racing Australia that they have signed a new co-driver to replace Troy Harrison who is now unavailable for the race.
Anastakis said while Harrison was unable to drive due to personal reasons, he is pleased that the experienced Improved Production driver will still be at the Goulburn circuit working with the crew.
his beloved Pug's seventh start, and it has a 100% finishing record. The best finish he and the 205 have had was in 2010 when they won their class, won the first European car award and were 10th outright. This year, while there will be a much stronger field, the Peugeot has had an amazing amount of work done on it during the previous 12 months, and at the first round of this year's MRA Series in January it showed a huge improvement in speed. Field started racing in the UK with the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) in the Future Classic series driving a 1998 BMW 325 Saloon. Over two seasons he completed numerous class finishes at tracks including Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Croft and Donington Park.
"When Troy ruled himself out I was fortunate enough to sign Lee (Field), as he is a colleague of mine, and he showed interest in the 300 in preparation for the Spa 24 Hour he is doing later in the year a the legendary Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium," said Anastakis.
After moving to Hong Kong, Field took a 12 months sabbatical to concentrate on settling in to a new country, but soon got the racing itch back, and for 2012 he drove with Track Torque, a team based in Zhuhai, China in their Ginetta G20 Cup series as part of the Pan Delta Super Racing Festival.
"He's real racer, in fact this weekend he is racing his Ariel Atom in the Pan Delta Hero series ahead of next week's 300 which he will be flying especially for. This year's Valvoline backed event will be the 8th 300 Anastakis has competed in at Wakefield Park, while this will be
With balanced, even matched cars in this one make championship, Lee scored many podium finishes often in 2nd or 3rd place over the 6 race season. Ultimately finishing 2nd in the 2012 G20 Cup.
British national and Hong Kong resident Lee Field will now share the driving with car owner Parry Anastakis in what is arguably Australia's fastest Peugeot.
challenge, as he acquired a 2011 Ariel Atom 245 modified to race specification and ran in the Pan Delta Circuit Hero One series contested at Zhuhai International Circuit, Guangdong, China. This most interesting series runs throughout the season over six heats and is open to all road going cars with light regulation allowing modifications to most components. Field was entered in class C for under 2 litre cars and competed against other vehicles including Ariel Atom, motor cycle powered Caterham, Lotus Elise, Renault Clio Cup and Honda Integra. Particularly helpful for his Wakefield Park debut this weekend in the circuits premier race, is that Field does have endurance racing experience, and he has competed in the Zhuhai Circuit Hero 300Km endurance race the past two years. In 2012 he competed with a team in an ex Belcar BMW E36 M3 GTR, and 2013 in his Ariel Atom. The 2014 season is already shaping up to be an exciting chapter in his motor racing career, for after the Valvoline Wakefield 300 Field has a confirmed entry in the Pan Delta Circuit Hero series ahead of his Spa challenge.
2013 came along and with it a new

3 TEAMS UNITE FOR 300 Three teams will join together in search of divisional honours in this week’s Valvoline Wakefield 300 at Goulburns Wakefield Park. Nightingale Motorsport’s TerryThree teams will join together in search of divisional honours in this week's Valvoline Wakefield 300 at Goulburns Wakefield Park. Nightingale Motorsport's Terry Nightingale is combining with West End Mazda’s W215 Motorsports Adam Dodd in a TargaRacing Mazda MX5 for Wakefield Park's blue riband event, which this year due to the amazing number of entries received, will be split into two races. TargaRacing principal Chris Gough had no hesitation in offering the Mazda car dealer the drive of his Nc Mazda after he shared the driving with the West End Mazda driver in the 3 hour final round of the 2013 Australian Manufacturers Championship at Sandown Raceway. In the 3-hour race at Sandown that incorporated pit stops for fuel and tyres, Dodd and Gough drove the W215 Mazda 6 MPS, and did an exceptionally good job by winning their class and finishing fourth outright. Points gained were enough to see Dodd also crowned Class C Australian Manufacturers Champion. A Mazda specialist, Dodd has only been racing for six years, but he has crammed a lot into that space of time, having started in a 1.6 litre Mazda MX5 which he raced for two years in Prodsports. During that time he also won an X class championship in I-Race in an MPS6 Dodd said he has been driving with TargaRacing for three years, and that is how he has
built a relationship with team principal Gough. He has also raced internationally, having competed in enduros in Europe, including the Nurburgring 6 Hours. Apart from his success in class in the 2013 AMC in his W215 Motorsports Mazda MPS6 , Dodd has also won a championship with Osborne Motorsport in a Mazda MPS3. The past 10 months on track have seen him join the Chris Gough owned TargaRacing team, and in his debut drive with Brian Anderson in a Mazda MX5 won the inaugural Modern Sports Car Enduro at Wakefield Park. That was followed up by a successful trip to Morgan Park in Queensland when he shared a BMW E46 M3 with Anderson and they finished 3rd outright and first in class in the Queensland Prodsport Enduro Championship. Nightingale had earlier taken pole position for the Driver B race, which he duly won, finishing the ten laps more than 20 seconds ahead of the second car. Then followed gallant effort to win the Valvoline Winton 300 with Anderson in the M3, when they were forced out of the race with the lead in sight
after Nightingale had sliced his way past more than 30 cars in 20 laps; then they ended up not finishing due to a collapsed battery in the M3. His latest drive was only weeks back when he drove with Chris Buckley in his HQ Holden in the HQ Bathurst Enduro Classic, when in his first competitive drive around Mount Panorama showed his class by qualifying 4th, then after car problems the pair finished 12th. Then, this weekend in the Valvoline akefield 300 will be a particularly busy one for the Bathurst driver, for apart from driving the MX-5 with Dodd will be running his Nightingale Motorsport EF Ford Falcon for Sydney's Mark Coxall and Melbourne driver Michael Cruse in the same event - hopefully in different divisions. Cruse is a very experienced Victorian Improved Production. He will be using the 300 to learn the tricky 2.2 km circuit for the Improved Production Nationals at Wakefield Park in November. Michael will join Mark Coxall as they both line up for their first 300 KM enduro and are hoping to come home with a strong result in their division.
