Thank you for joining us in celebrating the inauguration of Susan R. Wente, Ph.D., the 14th president of Wake Forest University. Intellectual discourse and dialogue create the core of great universities.
A B O U T T H E FAC E TO FAC E S E R I E S Wake Forest University launched the Face to Face Speaker Forum in spring 2020. The community-facing series was created to bring world-renowned, influential voices to Winston-Salem to discuss topics in a variety of areas, including politics, arts and culture, business, global issues and social justice. Face to Face launched its inaugural in-person season on Sept. 14, 2021, with bestselling author and noted journalist Malcolm Gladwell. The season continued on Nov. 9 with an evening featuring former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright and former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and a conversation with Yo-Yo Ma and Jeffrey Brown on Feb. 16. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Sanjay Gupta on April 12. Not only does this program bring our community face to face with worldclass individuals, but it also serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships. Proceeds from Face to Face events go to need-based scholarship recipients at Wake Forest University. Visit facetoface.wfu.edu for more information.
F RO M T H E P R E S I D E N T I’m pleased to welcome you to Wake Forest’s Face to Face Speaker Forum. Since coming to Wake Forest last July, I’ve spoken to many different groups on campus about “radical collaboration.” But what exactly is it? Tonight we are going to hear from Larry Culp and Gene Woods on this very question. Mr. Culp is the chairman and CEO of GE, where he has led GE’s transformation into a more focused, simpler and stronger high-tech industrial company. Mr. Woods is president and CEO of Atrium Health, where he oversees the work of more than 70,000 teammates, 40 hospitals and 1,400 care locations. Moderating their conversation will be Marybeth Torbet Hays (’90, MBA ’94), who has held a variety of senior roles at top companies, most notably Walmart. Culp and Hays also serve as Wake Forest University trustees. As a biologist, I’ve spent decades in the lab studying life on a cellular level. It’s clear to me that collaboration is fundamental to any thriving organic activity. What I’ve seen under the microscope and at universities, Culp, Woods and Hays have seen in business — from the boardroom to the boiler room, so to say. Thank you for being here and supporting the Face to Face Speaker Forum. I hope to see you in April for our next event with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Sincerely, Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. President Wake Forest University

BIOGRAPHIES H. Lawrence (Larry) Culp Jr., the chairman and chief executive officer of GE, has led the company’s transformation into a simpler, stronger, hightech industrial company. He has championed a culture of lean, focusing on customer value and improving safety, quality, delivery, and cost, as well as a plan to form three industry-leading, global public companies focused on aviation, healthcare and energy. Prior to joining GE, Culp served as the president and CEO of Danaher Corporation from 2000 to 2014, and during his tenure the company increased both its revenues and its market capitalization five-fold. Investors and analysts consistently ranked him as one of the top CEOs, and Harvard Business Review named Culp one of the Top 50 CEOs in the world. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Culp proudly serves on Wake Forest University’s Board of Trustees. Eugene A. Woods is president and CEO of Atrium Health, one of the largest non-profit and leading academic health systems in the United States, with over 70,000 teammates serving patients at 40 hospitals and more than 1,400 care locations across five states. Woods has 30 years of healthcare leadership experience, and his career is decorated with many honors, including his most recent recognition as #4 of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare. Woods currently serves on the American Hospital Association’s Health, Strategy and Innovation Committee, the board of Best Buy, and the Executive Committee of the Healthcare Leadership Council. Woods is also chair of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and was appointed to the Governor’s Social, Economic, Environmental and Health Equity Task Force. Woods holds three degrees from Pennsylvania State University: a bachelor’s degree in health planning and administration, a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in health administration.
BIOGRAPHIES Marybeth Torbet Hays (’90, MBA ’94) enjoys a portfolio career of corporate board service (including JOANN Stores) and consulting following a career in retail and consumer products. She is the former EVP of Consumables, Health & Wellness for Walmart U.S., an $85 billion portfolio. Prior to that, she was the chief merchandising, marketing, and supply chain officer for Walmart China and held additional executive P&L roles within Walmart U.S., Sam’s Club, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Hanesbrands. Hays earned both her bachelor’s and MBA degrees from Wake Forest. A member of the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees, she was the first female chair of the Wake Forest School of Business Board of Visitors. Sue Henderson serves as executive director of the Face to Face Speaker Forum. Before coming to Wake Forest, she spent most of her career in financial services, including more than two decades in wealth management at Wells Fargo. Henderson has a passion for community service and serves on six not-for-profit boards. Previously, she chaired the boards of the YMCA Metro and Summit School and the boards of visitors of Salem Academy and College and the UNC School of the Arts. In addition, Henderson served as vice chair of the Winston-Salem State University Board of Trustees. Dr. Susan R. Wente became Wake Forest University’s 14th president on July 1, 2021, and also serves as a Distinguished University, Professor of Biology and Biochemistry. She came from Vanderbilt University, where she served as provost and vice chancellor for the prior seven years. From August 2019 to June 2020, she took on the additional responsibility of interim chancellor. Throughout her career, President Wente has been a champion of collaboration, mentorship and groundbreaking research. She earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

C O M M I T T E D TO C O M M U N I T Y FACE TO FACE SPEAKER FORUM IS COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY Winston-Salem is a thriving, diverse and welcoming community. Wake Foresters cherish our North Carolina home and the strong relationships faculty, staff and students have developed with Winston-Salem residents, professionals and colleagues at peer institutions. Core tenets of the Face to Face Speaker Forum, outlined below, reflect our commitment to serve and engage members of our surrounding community. Community Engagement ·F ace to Face is community-facing and — through thoughtful speaker selection and expanded engagement opportunities — strives to connect with Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad residents who are not otherwise engaged with Wake Forest. ·O ur chosen venue, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, is a familiar gathering place for our community for sporting events, entertainment and concerts. Face to Face hopes local residents will feel at home in The Joel — viewed by many as “the community’s living room” — and will be enlightened and inspired by thoughtprovoking speakers in this welcoming space. ·F ace to Face offers special free access to its events by working with the United Way of Forsyth County. Student Engagement ·F ace to Face offers an intimate look at agents of change who have impacted our world. Our program intentionally engages future leaders, including Wake Forest students, students from peer institutions of higher education in our community, and, when possible, students from area public and private high schools. · Proceeds from events will support need-based scholarships at Wake Forest University. · S elect speakers will be available for free, student-only events on Wake Forest’s campus for Wake Forest students as well as students from Forsyth Tech, Salem Academy and College, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Winston-Salem State University. · I n addition, keynote events at the LJVM will offer an allotment of first-come, firstserved complimentary student seating.
