T H E U N I V E RS I T Y M AC E The Wake Forest University mace, a handsome staff decorated with scenes and symbols of the University, was first used at the inauguration of President James Ralph Scales in April 1968. It is a traditional symbol of authority and is carried at the head of the academic processions at commencement and convocations. The mace is shaped from a single sheet of silver covered with gold. It has an ebony handle. Etchings of Wait Chapel, Reynolda Hall, an arch at an entrance to the campus and the cupola on the Z. Smith Reynolds Library are on the largest, or middle, section. Pictures of the Old Campus are on the top section. On the bottom are panoramas of the medical school, Carswell Hall and the skyline of Winston-Salem. Each section is separated by raised drawings of magnolias. A double-cast seal of the University is at the top of the mace. The mace was given by the late Thomas H. Davis Sr. (LLD ’84) of Winston-Salem in honor of his father, Egbert Lawrence Davis Sr. (LLB 1904). Arnold Schiffman of Schiffman’s Jewelers designed the mace expressly for Wake Forest.
T H E P R E S I D E N T I A L C O L L A R O F S TAT E The Presidential Collar of State, often referred to as the Presidential Chain of Office, is part of the academic regalia worn by the president at commencement and convocations. The piece was created by Susannah Ravenswing, a local artist best known for her ceremonial and sculptural jewelry. In 1988, Life Trustee and former board chairman Weston P. Hatfield (’41, LLD ’96) commissioned the creation of a ceremonial collar honoring the office of the president and the service of Dr. Thomas K. Hearn Jr., Wake Forest’s 12th president. The collar is crafted of heavy gold electroplate over sterling silver. With the Wake Forest seal as the focal point, the collar features engraved circular links containing the names of past presidents and magnolia leaf crosses set with black onyx stones.

DR. SUSAN R. WENTE FOURTEENTH PRESIDENT A renowned biomedical scientist and visionary higher education leader, Dr. Susan R. Wente became Wake Forest University’s 14th president on July 1, 2021. Wente came to Wake Forest from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where for seven years she served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Wente also took on the additional role of interim chancellor from August 2019 to June 2020, leading the university’s response to the pandemic. Wente earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Iowa and her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. She was a postdoctoral fellow at both the Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her academic faculty career began at Washington University’s School of Medicine in 1993. In 2002, she was recruited to Vanderbilt and served as a professor and chair of the department of cell and developmental biology in the school of medicine. In 2009, she was named associate vice chancellor for research and senior associate dean for biomedical sciences, overseeing multiple trans-institutional graduate programs and interdisciplinary centers and institutes. Named as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2014, she led Vanderbilt’s 10 schools and colleges as well as efforts to launch a new structure for the university and medical center’s academic relationship. She also oversaw innovative enhancements to the undergraduate experience while elevating the arts and humanities. Known for her strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, she oversaw the creation of the university’s Office of Inclusive Excellence, appointed the university’s first female athletic director, and supported new faculty recruiting efforts. While charting the course for higher education institutions, Wente continued to conduct groundbreaking research focused on understanding pathways between the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells. She has authored or coauthored more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles, mentored dozens of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and served on the editorial boards for leading academic journals in her field. Wente has received a number of honors and awards for her research, leadership and community engagement, including the MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health (2010-2020) and the Women in Cell Biology Senior Career Award from the ASCB (2011). She was named a Woman of Influence in the “Trailblazer” category by the Nashville Business Journal (2020). Additionally, she is an elected fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Cell Biology. From cells and tissues to university programs and initiatives, Wente appreciates the fundamental role that collaboration plays in thriving structures and processes. The concept of “radical collaboration” — using trust, transparency and teamwork to build partnerships, encourage diverse viewpoints and drive community solutions — is central to her vision of leading Wake Forest, with its strong foundation and limitless potential, further into the 21st century as one of the world’s leading universities.
