Mission We strive to provide an educational environment that supports the physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual growth and development of our students. Our work is based on the educational contributions of Rudolf Steiner and his insights into human development and social forms. Our goal is to awaken and foster in our students:

A sense of wonder Creative and inquiring minds A well-founded belief in their capacities Strength of character, will, and intellect Compassion for and interest in all life.

These qualities not only equip our graduates to thrive in a variety of secondary settings, but to lead meaningful, creative, engaged lives.

Advancing our Legacy Robert Schiappacasse School Director Looking back on my first full year at the Waldorf School of Lexington, I am impressed by the school’s many accomplishments, aimed at better serving our students and advancing our legacy of the past forty years. In particular, significant effort was given to the accreditation process and the Board’s focus on creating a Master Plan. Every decade, WSL prepares for re-accreditation with the Association of Waldorf Schools (AWSNA) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). In a yearlong “self-study,” the faculty, staff, and parents reflected on every aspect of the school: from mission and governance, to programs, faculty and administration, to health and safety, and to facilities. I am very pleased to report that preliminary findings of our independent and Waldorf school peers rated WSL’s educational programs and its faculty as “exemplary.” This is powerful confirmation of the high quality of WSL’s educational programs, faculty, and school culture. We look forward to sharing more details from the accreditation report soon. Last year the Board launched a significant new initiative by inaugurating a Master Planning Task Force. Through a comprehensive vetting process, they identified an architectural firm, OMR Architects, to lead the master planning work. Gathering feedback from faculty, staff, and parents, OMR Architects created a comprehensive plan and concept design that outlines staged expansion, renovation, and improvements to our campus and facilities. The Board is actively studying this plan, its requirements, and its implications for the future of our school. The outcome of this process will lay the foundation for the launch of a capital campaign to fund campus development projects over the coming decade. Inspired by the work of our architects, we took steps to beautify our campus and make it more visible from Massachusetts Avenue. Upgrades included re-planting grass, improving garden beds, trimming trees in and around the horseshoe, and renovating and improving our signage. Improvements were also made over the summer to the field and playground behind our school. At our second Annual Gala, parents, faculty, alumni, and friends generously contributed to a special appeal to install a new and expanded playground in partnership with the town of Lexington. Our progress is only possible because of your continued confidence in our outstanding faculty, staff, programs and school culture. Your involvement not only strengthens and sustains our efforts but also moves us forward into a new decade. I want to thank all of you—parents, alumni parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends—for your commitment and support for our vital mission to provide an educational environment that uniquely promotes the physical, social/emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development of our students.

Focus on Pedagogy Karen Weiland, Chair College of Teachers The past year has been an exciting and fruitful year for the school culminating in a successful accreditation visit. Meetings in the College of Teachers have been lively and productive with a look to the future. Beginning with our Long Range Plan, we embarked on a review of our Foreign Language Program to clarify and enhance the goals of the curriculum to be brought to completion in the 2012-13 school year.

If you’ve had the experience of binding a book, knitting a sock, playing a recorder, then you feel that you can build a rocket ship or learn a software program you’ve never touched. It’s not bravado, just a quiet confidence. There is nothing you can’t do. ~ Peter Nitze CEO & President, Martek Biosciences Rudolf Steiner School Alumnus

Discussions in the College of Teachers have focused on the question of what students we can best serve, what services we can provide for a variety of learning differences, and what key elements contribute to a student’s success. We began to look toward improvements in our admissions process as well as the current practices for supporting those already in our student body. Other work of the College of Teachers this past year included the hiring of Elizabeth Reading as our present first grade teacher, clarifying the process of rehiring after a sabbatical, and approving an evaluation process for teachers conducted by our Professional Development Committee. We also approved and supported the extensive research and work of the Compensation Review Committee. In August we hosted a two-day workshop, attended by the full faculty and staff, on consensus decision making with Lysbeth Borie. This workshop, coming to us from the Quaker tradition, has greatly improved our meeting culture with clearer and more timely agendas, facilitated meetings, and a three-step structure to arrive at decisions. With new-found capacities for collegial working, we will continue on the path we forged for ourselves in the past year.

Financial Health Joe O’Regan Finance & Administration Director In 2011-12 we witnessed revenue growth of 4% despite the continuing weak economy. Tuition and fundraising revenues continued to be strong while some of our auxiliary activities (Homespun and the Lunch Program) have demonstrated a strong revenue growth of 15% in the past year. Expenditures have increased by 10% in line with budget. These increased expenditures illustrate the school’s commitment to investing in the future growth of our school. By hiring Robert Schiappacasse as School Director and investing in a Master Campus Plan, we are creating the foundation to better sustain our existing programs and structures as well as to create opportunities to enhance and grow these vital components of our school that allow us to thrive and meet the needs of our students and school community.

School Community Michelle Willis, Co-chair Parent Community Association The Parent Community Association works to engage parents in school-wide activities, that support faculty and staff, and to provide a venue for parent-led initiatives. In my involvement with the PCA, the past two years, I have been impressed with the dedication of our members who actively serve to create a rich community life at the school. The Waldorf Boutique at the Holiday Fair enjoyed its second year! This highly successful fundraiser provides our community with the opportunity to donate and purchase gently-used children’s clothes and toys while simultaneously generating money for the school and directly supporting the Parent Education Fund. The Parent Education Committee organized several lectures and workshops for the 2011-12 school year, including Kim John Payne who spoke about Simplicity Parenting.

The healthy social life is found when, in the mirror of each human soul, the whole community finds its reflection and when, in the community, the strength of each individual is living. ~ Rudolf Steiner

Another PCA initiative, Dads Connection, has been steadily gaining a foothold in the community. This casual off-campus evening meet-and-greet for Dads has blossomed into a venue for planning family-friendly events such as the first annual family camping trip held last June. The International Potluck in February celebrated the great diversity of cultures represented by our parent body. The addition of music presented by our faculty, parents, and children has enhanced the community experience of this warm event. Members of the PCA also organized a Nursery-Kindergarten Parent Reception, held in a parent’s home, which offers new parents the opportunity to have one-on-one time with parents of children in the upper Waldorf grades. This unique event, held just before formal applications for the next year are due, allows time for parents to ask questions for which only other parents have answers in a warm and relaxing cocktail-party environment. For the first time the PCA sponsored a Family Shabbat dinner as another community building and educational event that celebrates a ritual of the Jewish faith. The PCA continued to expand and reorganize the Adult Lending Library and maintained and organized the Lost and Found with regular clean-outs that sometimes produced donations for the Waldorf Boutique and other children’s charities.

Spirit of Giving Linda Mack Development Director We want to thank each and every member of our school community for supporting and investing in the sustainability of the Waldorf School of Lexington with your gifts of time and resources. Because of your efforts and generosity the school is stronger. In addition to donations to our operating funds, the school received a generous gift to strengthen the Math and Social Inclusion Programs. The gift enabled us to hire a Math Resource Teacher for grades two to five and to bring in special guest speakers, including Elizabeth Englander, Stan Davis, and from the Terezin Foundation, to share programs, presentations, and insights that enhance our school’s inclusive culture. A gift to enhance our science program went toward purchasing additional equipment for the middle school. We also want to acknowledge support for renovating the playground at our second annual Gala. Your generosity enabled us to partner with the town of Lexington to install a new playground which benefits our students as well as the children of our Lexington neighbors. In partnership with the Development and Alumni Committees our accomplishments last year include: • Participation of 97% in Annual Giving—exceeding a $15,000 matching challenge by the Board of Trustees to reach 95%, • Meeting a $15,000 matching challenge of new and increased gifts,

Development Committee Juleby Hirsch, Chair Kristin Bray Keith Hartt Laurel Kayne Beth Sager Stacey Zawel

• Donations of over $138,000 to the Annual Campaign,

Alumni Committee

• Increase in total gifts to 280 from 244 in 2011, • Increased alumni activity and release of an alumni newsletter, “In the Loop,” • Revenue of over $80,000 raised at the Gala, • Contributions of $22,620 to the Playground Special Appeal, • Revenue generated for the Mendenhall Scholarship Fund of $8,034—a record high—including contributions through sponsorships of local businesses and community members,

Lisa Berland Carol Damm Elizabeth Green

• Total fundraising of $299,826 (restricted and unrestricted). As the Waldorf School of Lexington re-establishes its Development Office, we continue our efforts to connect with you in meaningful ways. We are deeply grateful for everyone who volunteers, attends an event, serves on a committee, and donates, as so many of you do. Your support contributes to a solid foundation for WSL and creates a synergy that carries us forward. Thank you for helping to make the 2011-12 school year a success!

Annual Giving 2012-2013 This place has prepared you for life in a way that is unique, and rare, and remarkable; taught you things that the wider world regularly insists can’t be taught—artistic and musical ability, creativity, kindness—experiencing yourself as an integral part of something larger—part of seasons, and cycles, the ebb and flow of the natural world.

~ Ben Deily, Class of 1982

Matching Challenge Members of the board have increased their individual gifts from last year and are challenging our community to do the same with a one-to-one match for new and increased giving up to $25,000. If we receive 95% or over participation, the board will donate an additional $10,000. This is an outstanding opportunity to increase your investment in a secure future for the school. When you give to the Annual Fund, you provide across-the-board support for the school and for: • Program enrichment for students, • Campus maintenance, renovations and improvements, • Competitive salaries to keep and attract outstanding faculty and staff, • Continuing educational opportunities for faculty and staff, • Financial support to ensure an economically diverse community, • Community events and celebrations. Every donor is important to the school, and every gift is received with warm gratitude. All donors will be acknowledged by name in our annual report. You may wish to name your gift in honor of someone, or choose to give anonymously.

Thank You Your generosity of time and resources demonstrates the deep care that alumni, alumni parents, parents, grandparents and friends have for the Waldorf School of Lexington. We have graduated almost five hundred students and we can all be proud of our alumni as they enter adulthood and become participating citizens of the world—making the world a better place. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Linda Mack, Director of Development, 781-863-1062 ext. 564, l.mack@thewaldorfschool.org.
