New Resort and Golf Course in La Romana

T
he country’s newest golf course, “La Estancia,” was recently inaugurated. Situated just minutes from the eastern city of La Romana – home to “Casa de Campo”, one of the Caribbean’s most luxurious resorts – and the tourist community of Bayahibe. “La Estancia” features 202 villas and apartments, a world-class golf course and other facilities. The par 72, 18-hole golf course, was designed by world-renowned PB Dye, one
of the sport’s most distinguished architect/designer. In this first development phase, some US$120 million were invested. Built on 1.7 million square meters of land, the complex includes a club house, shopping plaza, and a Spanish-English school. The project also features the “Las Brisas” residential condo areas (with 60 units), “The Glen Town Homes” (52 units), “The Par 3 Golf Residences” (featuring 12 villas), and “The Golf Villas Cottages” (with 28 apartments). In total, the complex offers 202 residences, 45% of which are occupied by permanent residents. The second phase of “La Estancia” will kick-off with an initial investment of US$26 million, which will include the construction of a US$10 million boutique hotel, and a US$4 million medical center. The “La Estancia” project is expected to be developed in three stages.

When concluded, “La Estancia” is expected to offer 2500 homes, a total of 27 holes in surrounding golf courses, a kids club, beach club, river club and stables. The complex features its own water supply, an independent power system, a water treatment plant, a drainage system and other basic services. nternational personalities, such as former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Mexican superstar Luis Miguel, American idols Justin Bieber Selena Gomez as well as the 2010 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa, and the former president of Panama, Martin Torrijos (to mention just a few) all decided to spend the 2010 Christmas holidays in the Dominican Republic.
Puntacana Resort & Club The rigorous privacy offered by the Puntacana Resort & Club was the favored resort used by the Clintons and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to spend the winter holidays. Guests at this exclusive resort also included: famed US journalist Barbara Walters, journalist Charlie Rose, worldfashion designed Carolina Herrera and her family, Enrique Ponce and Paloma Cuevas, Mar Saura and Javier Revuelta.

Cap Cana Famed Mexican singer, Luis Miguel, and his former girlfriend – American top model Daisy Fuentes – also decided to vacation at Cap Cana, another famous Dominican resort. The couple was spotted enjoying a private dinner at “La Yola,” one of the best restaurants in the Punta Cana Marina Resort & Club. They were accompanied by friends. Casa de Campo Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solis and former Panamanian President Torrijos also celebrated New Year’s in “Casa de Campo,” also considered to be one of the world’s top resorts. Vargas Llosa, a frequent visitor to the Dominican Republic, owns an apartment in the beachfront resort community of Juan Dolio, situated some 40 minutes east of Santo Domingo, the capital city. This is the third consecutive year that the Peruvian writer spends the Christmas holidays in the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Tourism Fair in April
T
he XII edition of the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) fair, to be held from April 25-27 in Punta Cana, will be organized by the country’s Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES), and co-sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism. The fair will be held at the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. The three-day fair offers local and international suppliers, tour operators and travel agents a professional platform where they can market the Dominican tourism product. All appointments are pre-established in order to better coordinate and maximize the event.

Marcos Diaz: Man of the Year in Open Waters
D
ominican swimmer Marcos Diaz was selected as “Man of the Year in International Open Waters 2010” by the Daily News of Open Water Swimming, the world’s most prestigious publication in the sport of open water swimming. Readers and fans vote for their favorite candidate through the publication’s website. A jury, composed of coaches, representatives from the International Swimming Federation and members of the Hall of Fame of Open Water Swimming, supervises the final decision. Swimmer Marcos Diaz came in with a group of 12 worldrenowned athletes from Europe, Australia, South Africa and the United States. Last year, swimmer Diaz set out to join America with the rest of the world by swimming across the Bering Strait, a project co-sponsored by the United Nations and whose goal was to bring together all continents through this sport.
Competitiveness Forum in Santo Domingo
T
he Dominican Republic was selected as the site to celebrate the V Competitiveness Forum of the Americas, which will be held in the city of Santo Domingo, in October 2011. The Fourth Competitiveness Forum brought together public officials, entrepreneurs and top-level experts from 34 countries. Attendees participated in plenary sessions, panel discussions, and bilateral meetings to exchange ideas on how to increase competitiveness the current economic context.
