he kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation. It is sometimes known to be the woman's best part of the house. The shapes, color and sizes of the kitchens vary. While some women like it big and spacious, others like it small, as they regard it as their own private space. Mrs. Yemi A. says her kitchen is her first point of call. She loves her kitchen big and kept clean always. Her love for interior decoration employs her to design her
kitchen according to her taste. Colors for her are chosen at random and must be in uniform with other parts of the house. Her reason for having a big kitchen is to utilize her skills by experimenting things for example food pastries and juice. She intends to get a dining set in the kitchen. The size allows for fewer accidents as well as easier movement for her and others. She prefers her cabinets wooden and customized by her. Unlike some women, she does not keep things on the kitchen top but in the cabinets. Her worktop and floor, she loves it in marble and in bright colors. For Karimat Osaye, she wants her kitchen big. Why? Because, she would love it roomy where she can see everything at a glance and for easy access to her 'tools' without having to knock things down. She would love to have her kitchen painted in Orange as she wants it bright. For her table top, she wants it in marble or granite, with wooden cabinets. Madam Alice, said the Kitchen should be the 'virtuous' woman's most prized place of the home. At 70, she still cooks for her children and grand children when they come around. She said she had learnt cooking at age 13 and as the first child of her parents she had been a 'kitchen person' since. Cooking is her hobby and she does it well. The right lighting can add drama and elegance to any room. Whether turned up or dimmed low, general ambient lighting sets the mood. Ambient lighting works well with task lighting (like a pharmacy lamp pulled up next to a reading chair or a bed.) The contrast between general light and task light lends mystery and drama to an interior. The most romantic light is accent lighting. The gleam of candles through glass hurricanes, or the glow of votives in crystal glasses scattered throughout a room, across a dining table or along a mantle are perfect ways to create accent lighting. What is the difference in paint finishes? Paints can be oil-based or water-based latex. Oilbased paint is durable and long lasting, and takes two or three days to dry. Water-based latex is easier to clean up. Finishes vary according to how much light they reflect. ight fixtures also bring fun and fashion to a space. One of the keys to creating a comfortable and flexible room is to layer the lighting. There are three kinds of lighting to consider. Use a mix ambient, task, and accent lighting to delineate different zones. Choose light fixtures and lamps that add character to your decor. Ambient lighting: Begin with the ambient lighting or general lighting that just makes the room visible. Ambient light is the basic lighting layer, illuminating walls, open areas, and main pieces of furniture so that you can navigate the space with ease. For instance ambient lighting in a living room is very important because the room is often occupied by more than one person. Hanging ceiling fixtures offers the broad wash of diffused illumination required for soft, general lighting. Ambient light can be direct, bounced off a wall, or diffused through a shade to warm up the quality of the light.

he furniture that we use in our homes is not made of just wood. They have upholstery and sometimes have hardware made of brass or bronze. It is these parts that enhance the beauty of the furniture and make the piece a part of the rest of the dĂŠcor of the room. These parts too get dirty, gather dust and need to be cleaned regularly. Here are a few suggestions on cleaning upholstery and hardware. The best method to remove dust from upholstery is to use a vacuum cleaner. Place a soft screen in front of the vacuum cleaner nozzle, to prevent the tip of the cleaner from damaging the material. Use the brush attachment and clean carefully. Professional help should be taken if the upholstery is damaged or stained to a great extent. Furniture sometimes has metal hardware as part it. The metal
used is usually brass, bronze or silver. Hardware in modern furniture has a clear lacquer finish that gives them a lustrous appearance. Hardware is sometimes coated with certain types of restorers that eliminate the need for constant polishing. Furniture hardware often gets tarnished, as it is exposed to the atmosphere and reacts with it. In a case like this polishing the hardware can improve its appearance. Before polishing the hardware, remove the hardware from the furniture if you can. Otherwise cover the areas around the hardware, especially the wood, with acetate sheets to prevent the polish from damaging the woodwork. Polishing hardware while it is still on the furniture damages the area around it. This also allows the polish to get under the
hardware, thus damaging both the metal and the surface around. Clean hardware using a mixture of acetone and alcohol. Add both these ingredients in equal quantities to make a mixture. This will remove dirt and oil residue. Dip a soft bristle brush in this mixture and scrub gently. After it dries polish it with lint free cloth. Polishing must be done in small areas at a time. After polishing remove all residue. Follow these suggestions to clean upholstery and hardware on wooden furniture. While cleaning hardware that cannot be removed from furniture special care must be taken to ensure that no damage is done to the furniture itself.

rranging the furniture in your living room can sometimes be difficult. Not knowing where the best place is to put all of your furniture can leave you in a dilemma. One thing you can do when placing furniture is to always make sure you have an open pathway through the living room from one room to another. You don't want to block off your walk path areas through the room with furniture. And you don't want to have to walk around people while they are watching television and doing other activities where you may block their view. Just sit down before arranging your furniture and think how you need to place your furniture to get the best out of your room.

When choosing furniture for your living room take the size of your room into account. If you have a small living room go with the smaller scale furniture. urniture plays an extraordinary role in making any room in the house look very good and comfortable, and bedroom is not an exception. Without having great top quality furniture items, it is almost impossible to envision a bedroom, a living room or a kitchen. Modern day furniture market provides a wonderful variety of furniture possibilities in diverse cost ranges, colors and styles and your only limitation on the way of making an ideal bedroom is the quantity of money you can afford to invest on a bedroom set. People select their bedroom furniture based on specific things like color, top quality, style, size, etc. If you will take your time and decide on what you want prior to going to the furniture store, you will be able to select the correct bedroom set in a brief period of time. Contrarily, if you will not come to any conclusion on what you would like to acquire, you may well spend hours on searing for the proper furniture and will end up either buying not what you expected to acquire or nothing at all. Color makes furniture more attractive and appealing. Color can say a lot about your personality, your age, preferences and your way of life. Cool bedroom furniture colors like grey, pink, white and light shades of green and blue will make your bedroom look brighter and larger. On the other hand, such colors like red, violet, orange or purple will make it more exclusive and extraordinary, but at the same time cold and dull.

It would be wise to measure the dimensions of your bedroom prior to going for furniture shopping. This way, you will not get unnecessary items that may not fit into your bedroom. One of the most critical elements of any bedroom is bed. These days, beds come in four standard sizes like twin, double, queen and king size, so you really should make your choice based on the quantity of space you have. Craftsmanship and quality is what you should usually look for when choosing bedroom furniture. Beware of the hazards Here are some potential hazards to be aware of and watch out for. Vinegar, which is often suggested as an addition to wash water, is acidic and will etch or
burn it's way into the marble. Most bathroom spray will penetrate and irreversibly discolour deep into the marble. The oils in some soaps and cleaners will cause hard to remove, deep stains. Don't try to scrape stuck on substances like gum or tar. Remember marble is soft and scratches easily, so gently lift off as much of the sticky substance as possible and then clean away any residue with your spray bottle of marble and stone cleaner.
A whole new floor is only a day away Unfortunately, the entire scope of a marble floor care program isn't something you can do on your own. When the luster does wear off your floor or staining does become too much to bear, it's time to turn the work over to the professionals. It is good to know there's always something that can be done, now isn't it?
Skilled natural stone floor experts can turn your old marble floor into a new one in very short order. Their work is very specialized but really, not all that difficult, and with the explosion in stone floor installations that are being done in new construction, the number of restoration contractors to choose from is growing fast. You should be able to get several quotes and evaluations. These contractors will hone or grind the marble down a little to expose a new surface. Where there are deep stains, knowledgeable ones can apply pads of chemical formulations specific to the type of stain, and draw the stain out. And when these steps are complete, they will polish the stone with special equipment and compounds to bring your marble floor back to new. IVY INTERIOR MAGAZINE PAGE 29

new space in a beautiful environment of one's choice is what makes one bubble with energy and ideas for decorating; especially when you have some pieces of furniture you picked up on a holiday to some exotic places. All you want is to show off the pieces without thinking of how well suited each item is with other pieces and so on. Really, you are just one of the many people who want a 'wow' space and 'wow' interior style and more, by simply planning your spaces with a theme. A properly put together space is about proper interior styling which makes a space look well thought out and keeps items coordinated. This can be a bit challenging without the right idea.

Some would even go to the extent of bringing these dreams to life by interpreting them in spaces. Picture frames and paintings suggesting nature are also nice for spicing up such space.

The History Of Interior Design E veryone wants their home to look nice, and in that respect not much has changed since the time of the cavemen. Cave paintings and other decorations have been found in locations across the world, with some dated at around 32,000 years old: interior design is clearly a long-standing business! It's thought that the first real forays into interior design were by the Egyptians, who would decorate their huts with various pottery pieces, textiles and murals. Furniture in Egypt was usually highly intricate and of course, the tombs of the Egyptian kings and queens are some of the most luxurious ever seen, with priceless arts, treasures and carvings being packed into several rooms.
The Greeks and Romans also prioritised making their homes beautiful, with delicate mosaics and marble pieces being extremely popular. The look at this time placed a great emphasis on luxury and expert craftsmanship, and many pieces from these ancient civilisations still survive today. After the extravagance and opulence of the Roman period, Britain entered possibly its lowest point in art and design. The Dark Ages arrived, with austerity and sober designs becoming the order of the day. Many of the poor didn't bother to decorate their homes at all, relying on stone flooring and simple furniture, as even the previously beautiful churches made do with simple carvings in dark wood. Within a couple of centuries, it was completely different, as the Italian Renaissance led to plenty of marble floorings and expensive upholstery being found in the homes of the rich. The other big change was the invention of wallpaper, which was made using the newly-invented printmaking machines. Wallpaper offered a nice alternative to huge tapestries and was soon found in every wealthy home across Europe; the grander and more delicate the design, the better. Although wallpaper was initially only something that the rich had, better technology and two world wars soon saw this change. Both wars led to a shortage of paint across Britain, meaning that the demand for cheap yet attractive wallpaper rose. Soon, wallpaper had replaced paint in the nation's affections. The late 90s saw interest in interior design skyrocket thanks to TV makeover shows like Changing Rooms. Such programmes would take an ordinary house and attempt to transform it within just a few days, providing viewers with plenty of tips on how to make the most of their homes. Emphasis also began to be placed upon the home being a place to relax from the everyday stresses of modern life, thanks to the seemingly endless TV channels and games consoles that were being brought out at the time. As a result, living room furniture changed slightly in design, with uncomfortable showpieces being eschewed in favour of more comfortable items; recliner chairs and beautiful coffee tables were very popular. This now brings us to the present day. Today, many property shows focus on how the design of the home can alter its ultimate value, as well as offering tips on how to entice potential buyers. Shows such as Escape to the Country have also given buyers a stronger idea on exactly what they want from their dream home. However you choose to decorate your home, the important thing to remember is that it should be a reflection of you and your tastes; trends come and go, but your own style will always be perfect for your living space. Do plenty of research before settling on a particular design and don't be afraid to experiment with different samples of wallpaper and fabrics; as it's the place you spend most of your time, it has to be right for you. After that, it's a simple case of relaxing and of course, having friends over to show off your beautiful place.

Interior Design
Principles
An interior designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job. Interior design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents. In some jurisdictions, interior designers must be licensed to practice.
If we would speak about music we would describe rhytmas the beat of pulse of the music. In interior design, rhythm is all about visual pattern repetition. Rhythm is defined as continuity, recurrence or organized movement. To achieve these themes in a design, you need to think about repetition, progression, transition and contrast. Using these mechanisms will impart a sense of movement to your space, leading the eye from one design element to another. Repetition is the use of the same element more than once throughout a space. You can repeat a pattern, color, texture, line, or any other element, or even more than one element. Progression is taking an element and increasing or decreasing one or more of its qualities. The most obvious implementation of this
scheme; details are just as an important underpinning of interior design. Details should not be obvious but they should be right, enhancing the overall feel of a room.
Symmetrical balance is characterized by the same objects repeated in the same positions on either side of a vertical axis, for example you might remember old rooms where on each side of a room is an exact mirror of the other. This symmetry also reflects the human form, so we are inately comfortable in a balanced setting.
Asymmetrical balance is more appropriate in design in these days. Now that you have an idea about interior Balance is achieved with some dissimilar objects that have equal visual design, we can move forward and learn weight or eye attraction. Assymetrical balance is more casual and less something really useful, the principles of contrived in feeling, but more difficult to achieve. Asymmetry suggests interior design. Let's begin! movement, and leads to more lively interiors. When doing interior design it is Radial symmetry is when all the elements of a design are arrayed necessary to think of the house as a around a center point. A spiral staircase is also an excellent example of totality; a series of spaces linked together radial balance. Though not often employed in interiors, it can provide an by halls and stairways. It is therefore interesting counterpoint if used appropriately. appropriate that a common style and Interior design's biggest enemy is boredom. A well-designed room theme runs throughout. This is not to say always has, depending on the size of it, one or more focal points. A focal that all interior design elements should point must be dominant to draw attention and interesting enough to be the same but they should work encourage the viewer to look further. A focal point thus must have a together and complement each other to lasting impression but must also be an integral part of the decoration strengthen the whole composition. A way linked through scale, style, color or theme. A fireplace or a flat tv is the to create this theme or storyline is with first example that most people think of when we talk about a room focal the well considered use of color. Color point. schemes in general are a great way to If you don't have a natural focal point in your space, such as a fireplace for unify a collection of spaces. For example, example, you can create one by highlighting a particular piece of you might pick three or four colors and furniture, artwork, or by simply painting a contrasting color in one area. PAGE 40 IVY INTERIOR MAGAZINE
Try to maintain balance, though, so that the focal point doesn't hog all of the attention.
Another important element of interior design where it is necessary to take infinite pains is details. Everything from the trimming on the lamp shade, the color of the piping on the scatter cushion, to the light switches and cupboard handles need attention. Unlike color people find details boring. As a result it gets neglected and skimmed over or generally left out. As color expresses the whole spirit and life of a
Scale and Proportion These two design principles go hand in hand, since both relate to size and shape. Proportion has to do with the ratio of one design element to another, or one element to the whole. Scale concerns itself with the size of one object compared to another.
would be a gradation by size. A cluster of candles of varying sizes on a simple tray creates interest because of the natural progression shown. You can also achieve progression via color, such as in a monochromatic color scheme where each element is a slightly different shade of the same hue.
Color Colors have a definite impact on the atmosphere that you want to create when doing interior design.
Transition is a little harder to define. Unlike repetition or progression, transition tends to be a smoother flow, where the eye naturally glides from one area to another. The most common transition is the use of a curved line to gently lead the eye, such as an arched doorway or winding path. Finally, contrast is fairly straightforward. Putting two elements in opposition to one another, such as black and white pillows on a sofa, is the hallmark of this design principle. Opposition can also be implied by contrasts in form, such as circles and squares used together. Contrast can be quite jarring, and is generally used to enliven a space.
