Mayor’s Message Whether you’re a longtime American Fork resident, newcomer or visitor to the city - welcome. We appreciate you being here and hope you will join us in our annual celebration and feel a part of our community.

You will find something for old and young alike during our Steel Days festivities. They last longer than a week and include a quilt show, a car show, an art show, a carnival, a parade, a wonderful fireworks display, a garden tour, reduced-rate swimming at our fitness center, a baby contest, a soap box derby, a youth dance, a picnic in the park along with a family friendly concert and more.

In addition to these activities, please take time to visit our boat

harbor on the shores of Utah Lake, which includes a newly expanded sandy beach, and American Fork Canyon with its incredible vistas.

There are many things that appeal to the interests of all people.

You won’t want to miss our entertaining concert in the park featuring the American Fork Symphony at our beautiful Quail Cove Amphitheater.

You are welcome to come and enjoy the many summer events in American Fork City or step back in time and take a walking tour of historic sites in our downtown area such as the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum.

History of Steel Days For more than 100 years, the community of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community and residents. This amazing yearly celebration has become known as Steel Days.

Many hours have been freely given by our committee and awesome volunteers. We hope many of you will enjoy the fruits of our hard work and participate in many of the activities during this year’s celebration July 13 through 21.

Over the years, the celebration has had different names: Timber Day, Liberty Day and Poultry Day. TIMBER DAY Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment and games. It began about 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers.” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out and shared it with others. There were activities for young and old with a horseshoe competition, foot races and ball games. Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904.

LIBERTY DAY Next was Liberty Day. It had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage. The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park. There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons. When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other. Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels.

There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration. In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States. There was a baseball game, a dance and fireworks. The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events.

POULTRY DAY In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration. It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic. There was also a parade, a ball game, races, a carnival and a program and dance.

Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap. She simply wiped it up and went on with the day.

The Sunrise Salute, or firing of the cannon, continued at daybreak. There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served. There was a flower show, art show and all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater.

There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression. Poultry Day was held in July of 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all

American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944.

STEEL DAYS Since 1945, Steel Days has been American Fork’s traditional celebration. Then-Mayor O. De Vere Wootton decided Poultry Day no longer reflected the city’s economy. The newly constructed Columbia Steel Mill brought many newcomers who made an impact on housing, utilities, traffic and commerce. The mill became the largest employer in Utah Valley. Two individuals suggested “Steel Days” after a request for ideas for a name for the celebration. Steel Days was selected and was celebrated on Labor Day. Initially, the celebration was small, but in 1946 - the celebration’s second year - it was a full day of events similar to Poultry Day. The parade featured numerous floats decorated for and by local businesses. Bands came from Tooele, Salt Lake City, Nephi, Payson, Lehi, Pleasant Grove and Provo. The parade was presented twice for many years: once at 10 a.m. from 500 W. Main to 500 East, then at 6 p.m. the route was reversed.

The duration of Steel Days expanded to three days, then four and five days. Eventually it was expanded to 10 days. The celebration was also expanded to include horse racing when the track was completed at the American Fork Riding Club Arena.

Vehicles were also important in Steel Days history.

In 1961, the Jaycees held a drawing for a Ford Falcon.

However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw, and there was a $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied. The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically. the show.

Despite those successes, there was no celebration in 1963, 1964 or 1965. Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration.

There were abbreviated queen pageants held, however.

In 1965, the city used a smaller approach, calling it Community Day. It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks. The next year, it changed to a larger celebration held in July. In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed and boat racing was added to the list of events.

Some events have been added - some have been deleted. But still the celebration grew. Popular performers headlined the Big Show prior to the larger fireworks display.

In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer. One event was an attempt to break the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most candles on a cake. According to the rules, all the candles had to be burning at the same time. Community members, volunteers from schools, and others baked sheet cakes and froze them prior to

the attempt. Despite a breezy evening, the event was a success. However, the attempt was not. Shortly prior to the celebration, another community lit more candles on a cake. Their record was not verified – or known publicly – until after American Fork’s attempt was made, so American Fork did not know it needed to adjust the number of candles. Nevertheless, the main purpose was for community members to enjoy the camaraderie and they seemed to – as they have during all of American Fork’s celebrations throughout the years.

Mayor James H. Hadfield & Elaine H. Hadfield

Former American Fork Mayor James H. Hadfield and his wife Elaine H. Hadfield will be honored as the grand marshals of the 2018 Steel Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 21.

The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. that morning.

Mayor Hadfield served two terms as mayor of American Fork City, his second term ending on Jan. 2, 2018.

At the time, he had been battling cancer for several years, and he passed away on Feb. 27, just two months after leaving office. He was 76. As a result, his wife Elaine will represent the couple in the parade.

James and Elaine Hadfield were both born and raised in Lehi - in fact, their mothers shared the same hospital room when the two chil-

dren were born, Elaine just two days before her future husband. Both graduated from Lehi High School.

After graduation, Elaine attended the Sherwood Music School in Chicago for two years where she studied piano and how to teach piano lessons. James joined the Army National Guard after high school and attended basic training at Fort Ord, California. On his return to Utah, he was able to secure a job with the Utah National Guard.

James and Elaine dated in high school, and when both returned to Utah, they began dating again, marrying in 1965. They rented their first apartment in American Fork and one year later purchased the home in American Fork where they have lived ever since.

James Hadfield spent more than

30 years in the military, serving in an engineer battalion as well as working in the mechanics and finance fields. He retired in his mid-50s as a colonel in the Utah National Guard.

After retiring from the military, James Hadfield took a part-time job in American Fork City’s engineering department. He then applied for a full-time job and ended up working as a full-time engineer for the city for 15 years.

He served on the city planning commission for several years and decided to run for mayor. In that position, he participated on many boards and committees.

Elaine said James was proud that he was able to take his background in finance and use it to cut expenses at the city, saving citizens millions of dollars. He was also involved with the construction of the Pioneer Crossing road which opened in 2010.

Elaine Hadfield’s main profession was raising the couple’s four children. However, she has also influenced hundreds of other children in the community as a piano teacher.

She began teaching after her marriage and has taught ever since, having as many as 35 students at one time.

She still teaches piano today. She has also spent about 11 years teaching Kindermusik, a program designed to provide musical education to children ages 1 to 6.

While her husband served as mayor, Elaine did her best to support him and help represent the city at the various events he was asked to attend. “That was my goal, to make sure that the city knew that he had a wife that was supporting him,” she said. “Whenever he wanted me to go with him, I would go.” In similar fashion, James was always ready to

The couple are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where James served as an Elders Quorum president, a bishop and a high councilor.

He also loved Scouting and was involved in it for many years. Elaine has served in the Young Women’s organization and as an organist as well as a stake Relief Society president.

The couple has four children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Their children are: Gregory Hadfield (Kathy) of Springfield, Virginia; Jennifer Smith (Martin) of Alpine; Elizabeth Huntsman (Jarom) of Saratoga Springs; and Scott Hadfield (Heather) of West Jordan.

Jr. Grand Marshal Make-AWish Utah is excited that William (last name whitheld by request), an American Fork wish child, will be the Junior Grand Marshal at the annual Steel Days celebration.

14-year-old William loves dogs, spending time with friends, bowling, billiards, playing video games.

Around the time William was diagnosed with bone cancer, he was learning to speak German in school.

When he learned his diagnosis qualified him to receive a wish, he knew that the one thing he wanted most was to take a trip to Germany to practice his new language skills.

William is currently in remission, and just celebrated his one-year anniversary of being cancer-free! He is very much looking forward to cel-

ebrating this news on his wish trip.

Since 1985, Make-A-Wish Utah has granted over 3,200 wishes for local children like William who are 2 ½ - 18 years old and have been diagnosed with a critical illness. The organization’s mission is to create lifechanging wishes for Utah children with critical illnesses. Wishes are as unique as the child who imagines them and can consist of a wish to go anywhere, be anything, meet anyone, or have anything. In the last year, over 40 Utah County children have received a wish, including a local teen who wanted to visit WWII history sites in France, a 3-year-old who wishes to meet her favorite Disney princesses, and a 12-year-old who wished to have her own shopping spree.

We are on a quest to bring every eligible Utah child’s wish to life. The power of a wish extends beyond

The American Fork Beautification Committee, in conjunction with the Steel Days celebration, invites residents to attend the Sixth Annual Garden Tour on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14.

Residents can take this opportunity to stroll through the gardens of many devoted master gardeners. Those attending can feel free to ask questions and glean ideas for their own planting and gardening efforts.

The Garden Tour will be held on Friday, July 13, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

This dance will be a fun event for the youth to attend that will have a professional DJ and a safe environment where they can have a good time. The dance is for ages 14 to 18 and admission is free.

Monday, July 16, American Fork Amphitheater The American Fork Symphony will kick off the 2018 Steel Days celebration with a patriotic musical celebration titled “Salute to America.”

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 16, at the American Fork Amphitheater, located at 851 E. 700 North in Quail Cove Park. Admission is free.

The symphony will perform rousing favorites such as “Armed Forces Salute” and “Seventy Six Trombones.”

The symphony’s trumpet section will be featured in Leroy Anderson’s popular “Bugler’s Holiday” and piccolo player Connie Pritt will be featured in a performance of Henry Mancini’s “Penny Whistle Jig.” The medley piece “American Frontier” will include songs such as “Oh Susanna,” “Shenandoah” and “America the Beautiful.”

The orchestra will be conducted by Shauna Smith, who serves as director of orchestras at American Fork Junior High School and American Fork High School.

The approximately 70 members of the American Fork Symphony all participate on a volunteer basis because of a love of music and a desire to develop and share their musical talents. The symphony was first organized in 1993 and performs five concerts every year including its Steel Days presentation and a youth soloists concert. The symphony meets to rehearse on Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m. at American Fork Junior High School.

The American Fork Symphony is part of the Timpanogos Arts Foundation. TAF was founded in 2003 to support American Fork City’s growing Arts Council. In 2011, all the city’s arts programs were turned over to the foundation. The Timpanogos Arts Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit 22 • American Fork Steel Days 2018 • www.steeldaysaf.com

AF Symphony arts organization with the mission to “educate, enrich, and inspire by providing leadership and encouragement for artistic and cultural excellence, which enhances the quality of life for the people of American Fork and neighboring communities.”

The American Fork Arts Institute was formed by TAF in 2016 to oversee the seven active arts programs: the American Fork Children’s Choir, American Fork Community Theater, the American Fork Symphony, the Timpanogos Chorale, American Fork Visual Arts, the Wasatch Winds and American Fork Youth Theater.

In 2017, thanks to a generous PARC Tax grant from American Fork City, the Wasatch Show Band was added, bringing the total to eight excellent arts programs.

AFAI also produces the annual Mary Kawakami Youth Speech Contest and is a key participant in the annual American Fork Steel Days celebration, both in partnership with American Fork City. The popular American Fork History and Heritage Pageant, held at the American Fork Cemetery, returned in 2017 after a five-year hiatus, which is also presented in partnership with the city.

This year’s Coed Kickball Tournament is on Wednesday, July 18. This will be a great way to get out and enjoy a summer evening full of kickball. This will be the “full-on” type of kickball that we all loved to play in grade school. It will be played with a rubber playground kickball, bases and outs made by throwing the ball at the runner. It will be held at Art Dye Park, 1000 N. 550 East, American Fork.

The theme this year is “Picnic in the Park.” Since its beginning, the annual Quilt Show has been conducted by members of the New Friends Quilt Circle as a community service project.

Local artists are invited to enter their artwork in this show. There are two categories: Youth and Adult.

The 2018 American Fork City Soap Box Derby will be held on Thursday, July 19, beginning at 6 p.m. All racers will need to be at the starting line at 50 E. 740 North, American Fork, no later than 5:30 p.m. that evening. Any second inspection and weigh-in will begin at 5 p.m.

This coed event is open to everyone 8 years of age or older on the day of the race.

This race is open to everyone, regardless of gender. Non-residents of American Fork City are welcome to participate; sponsors are allowed and company names or logos may be displayed on the cars.

The race will be a double elimination, bracketed race to the finish with prizes for the first- and second-place winners as well as a People’s Choice Award.

Participants must be registered by Saturday, July 1.

Sing Steel Off Days Sing-Off Live Event: Friday, July 20 • Art Dye Park Hosted by the Timpanogos Chorale The American Fork Steel Days Sing-off, a new Steel Days event, is a voice/singing competition. The initial round will consist of contestants sending in a YouTube video of their performance to be judged by the Sing-off Committee. The second round will include the top finalists who will perform in front of judges at the Steel Days Sing-off live event. The top three winners will perform the following day during the Steel Days Big Show events.

The public is invited to attend the live event on Friday, July 20, at 7 p.m. on the stage at Art Dye Park.

Steel Days Sing-Off Sing-off is fundraiser for chorale The American Fork Steel Days Sing-off is being presented as a fundraiser for the Timpanogos Chorale. The chorale is a nonprofit organization with the mission to provide members with vocal opportunities, aid in the development of their musical talents and skills, assist in the development of their appreciation for beautiful music from diverse cultures and genres, and present such music to the community.

The Timpanogos Chorale has been invited by Music Celebrations International, the U.S. Air Force and the American Veterans Center to participate in the National Memorial Day Choral Festival on May 24-27, 2019. This musical tribute will be held in Washington, D.C., as a salute to America’s military and fallen heroes.

Money raised through the Sing-off will go toward helping the chorale participate in this festival.

The Timpanogos Chorale is made up of about 70 members of the community who volunteer their time to participate. It is part of the Timpanogos Arts Foundation and presents several concerts per year. The chorale is conducted by Andrew Wheelwright.

Steel Days Run Saturday, July 21 • American Fork Fire Station The 2018 Steel Days Run, which includes a 10K, 5K and Kids Race, will be held on Saturday, July 21.

The races will start and end at the American Fork Fire Station.

The 10K and 5K races will begin at 7 a.m. and the Kids Race (1/2 mile) will begin at 8:15 a.m. The top three winners in each division will receive prizes.

Grand Parade Saturday, July 21 • Main Street & 100 East Each year, the city is proud to present the Grand Parade to more than 12,000 people. This year, the parade will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 9:30 a.m. The route will be the same as in years past, with the parade starting at 300 West and Main Street and continuing east along Main Street to 100 East. The parade will then turn on 100 East and head north to 400 North.

It is the Steel Days Committee’s goal to have a fun and awesome parade this year. This begins with safety. Please stay out of the road as many floats and parade vehicles have difficult lines of sight. Everyone loves seeing the excitement of kids being able to collect candy, and we want to continue the tradition of passing out candy. Please help this tradition continue by not allowing children to run into the road to collect candy. Parade participants have been instructed to scatter candy near the gutters of the roads.

As the parade concludes, please help us take pride in our community by helping us keep it clean and collect any trash that is around you.

Remember, this is about us coming together as a community and celebrating together. Let’s have fun and be respectful to everyone around us.

Sing Pre-Show Off Entertainment SCOTT & RYCEEJO SHATTUCK

Saturday, July 21 • Art Dye Park • 1000 N. 550 E. Husband and wife duo Scott and Ryceejo Shattuck will perform as pre-show entertainment before the Steel Days Big Show headliner act The Strike on Saturday, July 21, in Art Dye Park. Their performance will begin at 7 p.m.

This award-winning couple from Orem has garnered the attention of millions of fans and families for their highly original Disney Mashups series, acoustic covers and a cappella treatments of popular songs.

Scott Shattuck was born in Orem and grew up singing. At a young age, he would spend hours in his father’s simple home studio writing and recording original songs using an electric keyboard and a basic microphone. After completing a two-year LDS mission to Brazil, Scott studied music production at Brigham Young University, honing his recording skills. At the same time, BYU’s Vocal Point, a world-renowned collegiate a cappella group, invited him to join their ranks. At the time of this invitation, he had been singing with the highly acclaimed Concert Choir at BYU. Scott sang with Vocal Point for three years until his graduation in 2015.

Ryceejo Nordstrom Shattuck was born in sunny Riverside, Calif. A California girl at heart and the youngest of three children, her bright smile and exceptional musical talents were evident at a very young age. She excelled in piano and choir and eventually learned to play the guitar, performing in school assemblies only months after picking it up. Upon arriving at BYU, she joined their prestigious Women’s Chorus and eventually landed a spot as a soprano section leader in BYU’s Concert Choir as well, where she met Scott. They began to date and discovered they harmonized very well, even recording a song at a friend’s studio on one of their first dates. Ryceejo subsequently served a full-time LDS mission in Nashville, Tenn., and Scott and Ryceejo began to date more seriously after she returned.

Once they had a marriage date set, they decided their wedding favor couldn’t be just any wedding favor, so they set off making a small EP of four songs they would record themselves to hand out. Two of these songs were full a cappella productions: “I Choose You” and “Stay Stay Stay.”

Thus the musical group officially titled “Scott & Ryceejo” was created.

After being married in 2014, they continued recording songs together, slowly amassing enough to make an entire 10-track a cappella album – their first full-length CD, titled “La La Love.” It was released in June of 2016 and was hailed as “bright and warm, and full of personality” by critics. One of the tracks, “Better Place,” was selected to be featured

on an international a cappella compilation album titled “Voices Only Forte VI.” Their introduction to the YouTube platform, where most of their work now resides, was accidental. “We didn’t set out to make music videos,” Scott said. “We simply loved recording songs together.” In December of 2016, they heard of an online contest being hosted by the internationally acclaimed, Grammy-winning a cappella super-group Pentatonix. The due date was the next day, at midnight.

Although neither had ever made a music video, and they didn’t even have a YouTube channel, they rushed to record their parts and then filmed the music video in their own tiny living room, submitting it only hours before the deadline. The Scott & Ryceejo YouTube channel was born.

They couldn’t believe how many views their video received, but what shocked them most was when Pentatonix actually selected their cover as a winner. Their tiny YouTube channel, with only one homemade video, started to gain followers rapidly.

Realizing that they had potential and a growing fanbase, Scott & Ryceejo spent the next eight months putting more effort into their music, releasing six music videos that seemed to do fairly well. It wasn’t until August 2017, however, that they received their next substantial break.

On Aug. 1, they released their first-ever Disney Mashup, a crossover of “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana with “Go the Distance” from Hercules. Within a few days, it had passed tens of thousands of views online, and within a month, over 1 million views. Bolstered by, and in awe of, the enormous success of this original mashup, they set out to record an entire album of Disney crossovers, all a cappella.

Their second full-length album, “Disney Mashups, Vol. 1,” was released on June 22 to enormous critical success.

Fireworks Saturday, July 21 • Art Dye Park • 1000 N. 550 E. The annual Steel Days fireworks display has become a highly anticipated part of American Fork’s city celebration.

Over the course of years, this show has become known as one of the better fireworks displays in Utah County. Residents are not going to want to miss the 2018 fireworks show.

The fireworks are launched from the softball fields area of Art Dye Park and will be shot off immediately after the end of the Big Show concert (around 10 p.m.), which will also take place at Art Dye Park. While the fireworks are visible from all over the city, audience members attending The Big Show will have the best seats for enjoying them.

The concert is free and will feature local band The Strike.

Doug Smith Auto Steel Days offers many activities for people in American Fork. However, there are also activities during the rest of the summer. One event that has been popular through the years is the Summer Concert Series.

It had changed locations and formats but remains a community favorite.

This year, it will take on a slightly different look, one that promises to be even more relaxing. The concerts will be presented at the Quail Cove Amphitheater, 851 E. 700 North, but this summer those who attend will be located in the grassy area on the south side of the stage. They are invited to bring blankets and chairs.

Attendees are invited to come early, starting at 6 p.m., and save their spot and enjoy menu items from a variety of food trucks. The music will begin at 7 p.m.

The concerts will be presented through July on July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. For the July 2 and 16 concerts, the format will revert to using the rock amphitheater seats.

American Fork Chamber of Commerce Upcoming Public Events The American Fork Chamber of Commerce has two fun events for the public coming up in October and December.

The first event is the chamber’s annual Trick-or-Treat on Main where the businesses along Main Street in American Fork hand out treats to all of the little trick-or-treaters from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Halloween. There is also a Trunkor-Treat at Doug Smith Autoplex where businesses who do not have a store front on Main Street can use one of the dealership’s cars and also participate.

This is always a fun event for the kids where they can interact with the businesses as well as the American Fork Police Department and Fire/Rescue Department while collecting some goodies in a safe environment. This event is free to the public and free to the participating businesses.

The second event is the chamber’s Christmas Parade and Pictures with Santa, which will be held on Dec. 1. Last year was the first time the chamber held this event and it was extremely popular and a lot of fun. There are plans to make it bigger and better each year. To kick things off, the

Police Department will escort the mayor and Santa into town on a fire truck at 5:30 p.m.

They will travel from the Doug Smith Autoplex to the library where children can have their picture taken with Santa and enjoy free hot chocolate and candy canes until 7:30 p.m. This year, businesses and residents are invited to put together a lighted parade float (or truck/ trailer) to accompany Santa on his journey to the library.

Those attending are also invited to bring new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to decorate the library’s Mitten Tree that is set up to collect items to donate to local shelters. This event is also free to attend.

American Fork City Fun Facts 1- This year alone, Three of American Fork City’s public safety personnel were recognized as being the top in the state or county; one Police Chief of the year award and one Firefighter of the Year from the State, and one Firefighter of the Year award from Utah County.

2- Last year American Fork City employees donated over 750 lbs. of food to Tabitha’s Way as part of our annual Day of Service.

3- Over the past three years the PARC tax has invested over $2.9 million back into the community through 42 projects that have improved every category of the tax (Parks, Arts, Recreation, & Culture).

4- The library checks out over 290,000 items. That’s over 10 books for every person in the city!

5- Fitness Center has over 260,000 users annually. That’s a little over a patron per minute during operational hours.

6- Our Fire & Rescue department responds to over 2,200 emergency medical calls in a year. That equates to about 7.5 medical calls every day of the year!

7- The City processed over 729 residential and commercial permits, an astounding 39% increase over prior years. When you consider that each permit requires about 10 -12 inspections you may be shocked to realize that’s 7,290 permit inspections, or about 20 inspections every day of the year.

8- During the summer months the AF Fitness Center Pools average over 1,000 patrons a day!

Kindness Initiative coming to American Fork The Fredette Family Foundation’s Kindness Initiative is coming to American Fork. This program encourages students to participate in activities that create a culture of kindness within their schools and community. Several nearby cities have been involved with similar programs.

With former Brigham Young University basketball star Jimmer Fredette at its head, the Fredette Family Foundation works to strengthen families and youth through various means, whether that is meeting basic needs of food and clothing or promoting anti-bullying programs and kindness in schools.

Blair Giles, president and CEO of the Fredette Family Foundation, said the foundation has efforts ongoing to promote kindness and service in Jimmer Fredette’s hometown of Glens Falls, New York. In addition, the foundation has been involved for several years in a project called Provo Kindness through which kindness clubs have been organized in all 18 Provo School District schools. Two years ago, the foundation also worked with Orem City to raise money for and build an all-inclusive playground for children with disabilities.

Most recently, it began working with the Pleasant Grove Council PTA to implement kindness programs in Pleasant Grove schools and with Pleasant Grove City on a project called “Rediscover Discovery Park” to rebuild Discovery Park.

The mission of the foundation is to create a culture of kindness in communities. Studies have shown that communities who focus on kindness produce more successful adults than those that focus only on STEM skills. “The goal is to strengthen families and youth in the community through simple acts of kindness,” said Giles. “From the Fredette Family Foundation standpoint, kindness is at the core of who we are and what we strive to do. We have observed that as communities come together and seek to lift one another through seemingly small acts of kindness each day, families are strengthened and protected, youth feel better about themselves, and our communities become positive and resilient as we work to overcome challenges together.”

In American Fork, as in the other cities where the program has been implemented, the foundation will be working with city leaders, school administrators and advisors, the PTAs of the individual schools, students, and the American Fork Chamber of Commerce to help implement the kindness program.

An executive board composed of members of the city leadership, the chamber of commerce, school administrators and advisors, the PTA, and American Fork High School students will be created to oversee the kindness initiative. At the high school, a Kindness Club Committee is planned. This committee will include presidents of other clubs, especially those with a similar mission, who will all work together to achieve the mission and goals of the Kindness Club. Within the club, a presidency will be created that will decide on the name of the club, the mission, the logo and the monthly

themes and also plan the Kindness Club meetings, attend the meetings and give reports at the executive board meetings. They also will work with the junior high and elementary schools to organize Kindness Clubs in those schools.

The Fredette Family Foundation feels it is critical that the Kindness Club be a student-driven organization, and that the club will not succeed unless this is the case. The club presidency receives guidance from the administrators and advisors, but ultimately the students are in charge of the mission and activities of the club.

Another important principle is that the Kindness Club is all inclusive – any student and any club can be a member of the club and be involved with the club’s activities. This is an initiative that involves and welcomes all members of the community.

This spring, Giles met with American Fork’s Mayor Brad Frost and City Administrator David Bunker to discuss the city’s involvement with the initiative.

“This initiative has the full support of the city and the mayor. I feel like this is a great program and is very much needed in American Fork. I’m excited to see where the students go with this,” Frost said.

Giles also met with Tim Thompson, an administrator at American Fork High School, and several high school teachers who have expressed interest in helping to implement the Kindness Club program at the school.

Julia Wesemann, who will be a junior at American Fork High School this fall, will be the president of the club. She approached the chamber of commerce and the city about implementing the program in American Fork after hearing about the Choose Kindness Initiative in Pleasant Grove.

“I had times during the school year when I could have really used the Kindness Club, and I hope my peers will benefit from it as much as I think I will. I’m hoping that the Kindness Club will be an easy and fun way to make friends, connect with the city and community and, most of all, spread kindness throughout American Fork,” Wesemann said.

The chamber of commerce will work with the business community to get sponsors for the club’s activities and to encourage local businesses to participate in and promote the monthly theme activities. As a “kickoff” activity for the Kindness Club, the chamber worked with the AFHS National Honor Society to collect items for the silent auction at the Kevin’s Karnival event, and several students who will be part of the club this fall attended the event and passed out stickers and answered questions about the club.
