2016 Lehi Round-Up Royalty Sponsored in part by AMAZING LASH
The Lehi Round-Up royalty is the “face” of the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. They represent the rodeo at various other rodeos, parades and public events as well as provide information about animal welfare, the history of Lehi’s rodeo, Lehi City and any other Lehi Round-Up-related topics. The 2016 royalty was chosen from a field of five contestants. After a full day of interviews, modeling, impromptu speeches and horsemanship competition, three highly qualified ladies were chosen. McKenna Hales, of Morgan, is Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo 2016. She is the daughter of Ron and Becky Hales. McKenna is a graduate of Morgan High School where she was active in many organizations. She was also active in high school rodeo, where she competed and won many titles in queening, pole bending and cow cutting. In 2014, she was selected as the Silver State International Rodeo Queen. McKenna is currently a student at Brigham Young University majoring in nursing. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping, skiing and snowmobiling. She also enjoys basketball, softball and running. She is honored to be representing the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. Kassadee Jo Jones, the daughter of Darin and Kellie Jo Jones, was selected as the first attendant. Kassadee Jo is a native of Lehi and has been involved with the Lehi Round-Up celebration her entire life. She is currently a junior at Lehi High School where she is active in FFA, participates with the Lehi Longhorn Rodeo Team, and has deemed herself the cupcake queen. She loves everything to do with horses and the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and celebration. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, four-wheeling in West Canyon and making more cupcakes. Kassadee Jo invites you
Photo by Whitney Thomas Photography to make the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo your family tradition. Sydney McManus is the daughter of Ted and Donna McManus. She will represent the rodeo as the second attendant. Sydney is from Heber, and is currently an elementary education major at the University of Utah. She has been active in both English and Western
disciplines including hunter jumpers and trail riding. In her spare time, Sydney enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending rodeos, fishing, camping, reading and DIY crafts. She is excited to join the tradition of the Lehi RoundUp Rodeo and serve Lehi City as an ambassador for the sport of rodeo.

2016 Round-Up Rodeo The 2016 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 23-25, at the Lehi Rodeo Arena, 200 N. 500 West, Lehi. This popular rodeo will begin each night at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.lehirodeo.com. They will also be available for purchase at the Lehi Macey’s store beginning June 1. There is nothing comparable to watching the grand entry at the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. With the music, flags, cowgirls and Mt. Timpanogos rising to the east, it is a scene right out of a movie and surprisingly patriotic. It is America at its best. This year, the event celebrates its 79th year of professional rodeo. In 1941, with a war looming, the Lehi mayor and city council organized the Civic Improvement Association. One of the tasks this group was assigned was to organize and carry out a citywide celebration. Under its direction, the celebration was moved to the last full week of June. A “name the celebration” contest was held and Ethel Hunger’s winning entry was the Lehi Round-Up, which recalled the farming and ranching legacy of the area’s early pioneers.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
2016 Round-Up Rodeo The Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is a major stop on the Wilderness Circuit for professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. To add to the excitement, the committee has always been successful in bringing top rodeo acts to perform for the crowd. Of course, the phrase “Utah, are you ready for bull riding?” can be heard each night echoing through the arena and it brings the crowd to life. Andy Stewart will be back behind the microphone for the 79th Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. Stewart has been a member of the PRCA since 1996. His many achievements include being nominated for PRCA Announcer of the Year 2009-14; RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo announcer 2006; and RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo 2005 and 2007. Andy and his wife Shelley make their home in Collinston, La., and are the proud parents of Kash and Shaye. When Andy is not on rodeo road, he keeps busy as a television host, providing PRCA coverage on the Outdoor Channel and voice talent for TV and radio.

Giant screen to enhance rodeo excitement Audiences at this year’s Lehi Round-Up Rodeo will be able to enjoy rodeo action as it happens, then see the highlights replayed on a giant television screen. The Civic Improvement Association, which organizes and runs the annual rodeo, has hired Montex Productions to bring a video screen measuring 15 feet by 12 feet to the 2016 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. A structure of steel beams is currently being built at the rodeo grounds to accommodate the screen, and a crew will hang the screen at the rodeo grounds a few days before the rodeo be-
gins. The screen’s location was specifically chosen to provide audiences an excellent view from anywhere in the arena. Montex will also provide a video and graphics crew so rodeo action can be shown on the screen along with leader boards and sponsor information. Randon Young, director over sponsorships for the Civic Improvement Association, said many of the larger rodeos are including this kind of technology in their arenas. With a desire to maintain the Lehi Round-Up as one of the top rodeos in Utah, the association decided to bring the ex-
perience to Lehi. Young said he has attended rodeos with similar screens and the result is amazing. “It takes the audience right there on the arena floor where they can see the texture of the animals’ hair, they can see the breath of the animals, the dirt flying, and see those cowboys and cowgirls giving it all they’ve got,” Young said. The stock contractor for the 2016 Round-Up had seen Montex operate at other rodeos and referred Lehi to the company, reporting that it was the best in the business. “The Round-Up’s been known as one of the best rodeos in the state as it is, but it’s going to take that experience to the next level, so to speak,” Young said. The 2016 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is planned for June 2325 and the giant screen will be operating all three nights. Young said the association plans to make the giant screen a regular feature of the rodeo in the future.

Ghost Riders
Team Ghost Riders to entertain crowds Appearing as a specialty act at the 2016 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo will be Tim “Wild Thang” Lepard and Team Ghost Riders. Tim “Wild Thang” Lepard has been involved in rodeo for more than 35 years. He began his career riding bulls, which evolved into bull fighting. He has been a member of the PRCA since 2004. In 1998, Lepard was crowned the Mesquite Champion Bullfighter. Lepard’s mentor Jimmy Anderson once said to Lepard, “You can go to a rodeo and find 20 macho guys that think they’re bull fighters, but you’re only going to find one funny man and that’s you.” After nine major surgeries incurred due to fighting bulls, Lepard began putting together a dog and monkey act that concentrated on comedy. Finally, an act with three dogs and three monkeys evolved into Team Ghost Riders. Their action-packed and exciting performance brings the jungle and the rodeo arena together with three of the best sheep dog-riding monkeys in the business. These little wonders work together with Lepard and bring the Wild West to life as they feature their special cowboy skills. Working with and training animals involves a lot of hard work. Traveling across the United States with the animals requires even more dedication and responsibility. The animals are like family and require round-theclock care to ensure their well-being. Just seeing the crowd smiling and hearing their laughter makes it all worthwhile for Lepard. Tim “Wild Thang” Lepard has performed at the International Finals Rodeo, been a three-time
winner of “Comedy Act of the Year,” a three-time winner of “Dress Act of the Year,” and a one-time winner of “Barrel Man of the Year.” He has participated in the Columbus Ohio Pet Expo
and was featured on America’s Funniest Home Videos as well as in FHM Magazine and Sports Illustrated. He has appeared on the Jay Leno Show and Steve Harvey’s “Big Show.”
I have long been skeptical at going to a chiropractor. I was in a severe car roll over...and was experiencing a lot of pain. I was referred to Dr. Baird’s office by a good friend. So I called for an appointment, and...I went ahead with the treatment...I’m feeling much, much better, no pain, better range of motion in my neck than what I had even before the accident. I would highly recommend Dr. Baird. ~Rick C. ~ Alpine, UT

Concessions
Concession sales help keeps Lehi tradition alive Hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and drinks keep hungry rodeo fans fed during the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo each year. Profits from the sale of these popular items, however, help keep another long-time Lehi tradition operating during the annual Round-Up celebration. The Miniature Float Parade, schedule this year on Friday, June 24, has been a tradition in Lehi for decades. Each year, wards from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sign up to be part of the parade, then build their entries based on a theme. Volunteers pull the miniature floats along the parade route while smiling children ride on the floats and wave at the spectators. The Lehi Civic Improvement Association - the organization that oversees the Lehi rodeo - decided many years ago to support the Miniature Float Parade tradition, said Mike Southwick, vice president of the association and a director of the rodeo. As a result, profits from the rodeo’s concessions sales are divided up each year and given to the wards that built a float for that year’s miniature parade. This helps the wards cover the cost of their floats. “We usually give back to the wards for the floats anywhere between $500 and $600,” Southwick said.
The parade committee asks each ward to keep its float expense under $600, so the money from the concession sales essentially pays for each float. Southwick said the tradition of giving concessions proceeds to the wards to help pay for their miniature floats goes back at least 40 years. The parade is an event unique to Lehi’s city celebration and the community loves it, he said. While the rodeo is helping wards with their floats, wards in the Lehi community are helping the rodeo operate through staffing it with hundreds of volunteers. The rodeo has four concessions stands, and Lehi wards take turns providing about 20 volunteers each night of the rodeo to operate those stands. The volunteering doesn’t end there, however. Lehi LDS wards also provide about 300 volunteers over the course of the three-night rodeo who help with all aspects of the rodeo’s operation including handing out programs, ushering, taking tickets and assisting with parking. The volunteers also help clean under the bleachers after the rodeo performances as well as prepare the arena during the week before the rodeo and clean it up during the week after.

Grand Marshal
Carol Pulham named parade grand marshal Lifelong Lehi resident Carolyn Pulham will be honored as the grand marshal of the 2016 Lehi Round-Up Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, at Wines Park and proceed to Lehi High School. Carol passed away on March 8, 2016, and will be represented in the parade by members of her family. In 1939, when 6-year-old Carolyn Ruth Norberg moved to Lehi from Coalville, Utah, Lehi was a small town of about 2,500 residents with no traffic lights, no sidewalks, one gas station, one elementary school, one café and five wards (congregations) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her parents, sisters and brother moved into a beautiful home by 700 East. Childhood in Lehi meant happy and safe memories of picking cherries and raspberries, playing games of “Annie I Over,” “tag” and “run sheepy run,” weeding the
3/4-acre garden, going back-to-school shopping at the American Fork JCPenney store and picking even more raspberries. She graduated from Lehi High School in 1950 where she was a member of the pep club, a marching club that performed at the halftimes of games (one of the few extracurricular activities for girls). In the yearbook, her ambition was “to go to business college,” and indeed she did attend LDS Business College and later used those skills as a bookkeeper for Pulham Enterprises until her husband passed away in 1987. Carol married Arland Pulham of Lehi in 1950 and they built a home on three acres near 900 North in Lehi where they raised a family of seven children: JoAnn, Gary, Randy, Sherene, Susan, Wade and Keith. It was a tradition and yearly highlight to attend or participate in the annual Lehi

Round-Up parade, rodeo and stock parade. Carol was a committed Lehi High School sports fan who attended many, many home and away games and cheered for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and others. A jacket and folding chair were standard equipment in the trunk of her car. She was also a “grandmother to many other athletes at Lehi High School. She knew the team rosters, scores and schedules well. Besides the Lehi High School activities, other top priorities were attending family events, traveling, gardening, camping, attending various church activities, serving a mission for her church and making many quilts and baby blankets. She was known to be a dependable source for the latest family, neighborhood, church, Lehi High School and Lehi City information. She was a board member of the Lehi High School Booster Club, serving in many positions for nearly 30 years, and in 2003 she was honored as Lehi High School Booster of the Year. Carol was devoted to her family and she loved her city and its high school. She is greatly loved by her seven children, 34 grandchildren and more than 70 great-grandchildren. She would be humbled and delighted to have known about the honor of being named parade marshal.

Family Picnic in the Park Sponsored by: HYATT PLACE LEHI, BIOLIFE & ASSURED DIRECT MAIL
Musical duo High Valley to perform at picnic The Lehi Roundup Family Picnic in the Park will be held on Monday, June 20, at 6 p.m. in Wines Park, with entertainment provided by musical duo High Valley. High Valley’s major label debut single “Make You Mine” is an exercise in balance and purity of expression. By combining their bluegrass roots with a modern pulse, brothers Brad and Curtis Rempel have created something that feels simultaneously fresh and timeless. Beginning with a burst of turbo-charged acoustic guitar, the tune builds momentum with a four-on-thefoot kick drum and rousing group choruses that beg to be shouted at full volume. This energetic attack is mirrored by the determination and confidence in the lyrics, aimed at winning over a “soul miner’s daughter.” Also remark able is how “Make You Mine” refuses to be overwhelmed by electric instrumentation, staying close to its acoustic core. That was a very conscious decision, according to mandolin player/vocalist Curtis. “Even getting some buddies in the studio and just
shouting out lyrics, bringing energy in that way instead of always defaulting to crunchy guitars and things like that, Curtis said. “That’s what we’re all about.” Earlier this year, Brad and Curtis High Valley played the song at the Grand Ole Opry and were fortunate to be accompanied in the hallowed circle by one of their biggest influences, Ricky Skaggs. Though Skaggs’ early ‘80s heyday pre-dates either brother, they’ve been longtime fans. While their upbringing in a close-knit, rural community didn’t exactly acquaint them with all of popular music, it did help cement the musical ideals and love of simple, classic country that still inspire the duo today. This event is sponsored by Hyatt Place Lehi.

Stock Parade
Stock Parade set for Thursday, June 23 Every year on the Thursday of the Lehi RoundUp celebration, the streets of Lehi revert back to horse-and-buggy days as hundreds of riders and horses pulling wagons participate in the annual Stock Parade. This year’s Stock Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. It will begin at Wines Park and end at the Rodeo Grounds. This parade is one of the longest-running parades in Utah. It attracts riders from all over the region. It is a unique experience to see all the riding groups and individuals make their way down the parade route to the rodeo grounds. Some participants go to great lengths to prepare for the parade. They prepare elaborate costumes and even dress their horse or pony up. Others just make sure their horse and gear are clean and then ride down the street in their regular dress. Over the years, people have dressed as mountain men, Native Americans and knights.
Many riding groups also perform during the parade. These groups, usually commanded by a whistle, execute elaborate routines as they ride down the parade route. The vast majority of the participants ride horses, but there are also donkeys, mules, ponies and miniature horses. Sometimes there is an assortment of racing chariots and several different types of wagons.

Miniature Float Parade One of the best-loved Lehi Round-Up traditions is the city’s famous Miniature Float Parade. These miniature floats are made by volunteers from various local wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The floats are pulled by volunteers and carry hundreds of smiling children through the parade each year. This year’s Miniature Float Parade will be held on Friday, June 24, beginning at 6 p.m. It will begin at Wines Park and continue to Lehi High School. The theme this year is “Picture This.” There will be a Bike Parade following the Miniature Float Parade. Kids that want to participate with their decorat-
ed bikes need to meet at the northwest corner of Wines Park at 5:30 p.m. that evening.

Lehi Silver Band Lehi Silver Band Wagon is a 125-year-old tradition Traditions run deep for the iconic Lehi Silver Band Wagon, which is celebrating 125 years of entertaining around the State of Utah. No celebration in Lehi would be complete without it. There is no other outfit like it, and it maintains a special place in the hearts of many. The band’s musicians were organized a few years earlier, but in the spring of 1891, the band’s financial director William Goates purchased the running gears of a Cooperative Wagon & Machine Company display while visiting the Mitchell Fair in Salt Lake City. The mechanism was not painted, but the wood was oiled and polished and the iron was beautifully bronzed. Goates knew it would be great for the boys. Lehi master carpenter Gay Whipple crafted the wagon box with seats at the old Jacob Hodge blacksmith shop. The wagon was given a highly polished finish and it remained that way until 1895 when Edwin Evans returned home from studying art in Europe. He was hired to paint the wagon. The first appearance of the wagon was a great day. The horses were well groomed and decorated with flags and bunting. The musicians were dressed in their uniforms, which consisted of a linen duster and a summer helmet. The original Silver Band Wagon members were: George Goates, John Y. Smith, Isaac Taylor, Andrew

Goodwin, Jack Jones, Daniel Fowler, Franz Salzer, William T. Taylor, Charles Gray, Thomas Clark and Andrew Fjeld, with Charles Goates as official coachman. In 1905, the band’s attire changed from linen dusters and helmets to a dark green uniform and matching caps with “LEHI” printed across the top. By 1913, the musicians had discontinued wearing uniforms, and on the wagon itself, Edwin Evan’s artwork had been painted over and raised lettering reading “Lehi Silver Band” had been attached to each side. In 1952, the wagon, under the direction of Donald Wright, was repainted in Lehi purple and white and appeared in many parades. The wagon and music were always well received by the parade goers. In 1975, under the direction of Mayor Evan Colledge, the decision was made to retire the wagon. The intent was to preserve the memory of the past. Betty Fowler headed the Bicentennial Committee, which

Lehi Silver Band obtained a $14,000 grant from the Utah State Bicentennial Commission. The grant was used to purchase land and construct a park and pavilion to serve as a permanent home and display area for the wagon. On that final parade day, Ray Stewart proudly sat high atop the creaky wagon with reins in hand while longtime band members John Broadbent, Howard Brown, Vivian Carter, Richard Devey, Dick Eddington, Harold Fox, Leo Hadfield, Clell Jackson, Donald Nielsen, Alvin Schow, Mel Anderson and others played with all the emotions of one last time. At the end of the Days of ’47 parade in 1976, the wagon was brought to the Bandwagon Park on 800 North and 200 West, a fitting retirement for the band wagon’s long career. Melvin Anderson was prodded by his brother Ralph and Scott Sampson to build a new band wagon. Mel thought it was useless to have a new wagon if you don’t have a band, so he contacted Lehi City Administrator Ed Collins and his wife Kaye, the high school band teacher at the time. So Kaye got busy and organized a band. Ed solicited donations from local organizations to help with the cost of building a new wagon. Thanksgiving Point was contacted and agreed

to provide a team of horses and a teamster. Two of the teamsters at that time were Ty Tingey and Mark Coddington. Mel reported that unlike the old wagon, the new one would have cushioned seats. It was handcrafted like the old wagon but done with materials of today. He made the front wheels smaller than on the first wagon so it maneuvered easier. With many helpers, donations and encouragement, the new band wagon was in its first parade in 1997. The band wagon saw many coachmen and different colored teams of horses. Early coachmen were Azer Southwick, Ray Stewart and Russell Schow. After Thanksgiving Point, owners with their own teams stepped up. Mark Cutler drove for a few years and the current driver is Bart Peacock and his team. For many years, the old wooden wheels were removed from the wagon before each parade and soaked in the water at Spring Creek. This made the wood swell and hold the wood against the metal wheels. With the new model finished, this procedure was not needed any longer. The Lehi Silver Band Wagon is a tradition and icon for the city of Lehi. Many musicians - young, old, amateurs and professionals - have come and gone, but the knowledge of the Lehi Silver Band Wagon is ingrained in their hearts. During the 2016 Lehi RoundUp celebration, take a minute and stop by the Band Wagon Park. Then welcome the sight of the Lehi Silver Band Wagon in all three parades. For more information, go to www.lehirodeo.com. Tip your hats to these musicians, because while they are on the wagon, they are the Lehi Silver Band. Some traditions are just too great to let die, and this is one of them. So join the tradition. Be proud, because Lehi roots run deep. Compiled by Peggy Lewis.
