GRAND MARSHAL Lillian Parker was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where she lived until she married Lee Parker on April 24, 1951. They made their first home in American Fork where Lillian still resides. Lee was born and raised in American Fork and loved the community. Together Lee and Lillian supported many children and groups in sports, marching band, cheerleading, choir and many other activities. They started their own business, Parker’s Drive-In, in 1953 and continued to serve the community for 58 years. They loved the interaction with their many friends and customers over the years. Lee died in 2002 but Lillian kept the business going until closing on December 30, 2011. Lee and Lillian have three daughters; LeAnn Thomas (Kenneth) of Richfield, Cindy Blackham (Tim) of Moroni, and Tammy Pulley (Frank) of American Fork. They have 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren with four more on the way. Through the years all three daughters worked for them along with one son-inlaw, one grandson and eight granddaughters. 6

JR. GRAND MARSHAL FINN PACK Finn was born a very positive person. As a baby he would awaken each day with a look on his face that said, “Hello, world. It’s a new day”. He is kind and loving towards everyone he meets. He was the best older brother from the minute his (late) brother Colum was born. Colum looked up to Finn; he was his hero. Finn was very protective of his baby brother and the love they shared between them will last forever. He has handled a terrible tragedy with superhero strength and grace. He has helped save his Mom and Dad from being in a very dark place by setting an example with his sunny disposition. You will find him having frequent superhero adventures at home and everywhere he goes.

HISTORY OF STEEL DAYS   The residents of American Fork have always enjoyed a vibrant city celebration. In the early days American Fork City celebrated Timber Day, an allday village picnic with music, entertainment, and games. It began about 1865 and continued until 1904. Next, came Liberty Days, truly patriotic July celebration, which was held on July 4 and July 24 on alternate years. Liberty Days were observed until 1926.   The City then transitioned to celebrate Poultry Days. A modest celebration was held in July 1927. Things really took off in 1928. Miss Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. On

December 4, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Eliminating all celebrations for the duration of World War II. After World War II there would be no more Poultry Day Celebration. No community celebration of any kind was held in 1942 or 1943, but a small neighborhood party was held in 1944.   Steel Days in American Fork has been a tradition since 1945. It began when Mayor O. De Vere Wootton decided the Poultry Day Celebration no longer reflected the economy of the town. The WWII years brought much change, including the steel industry and declining poultry profits. In 1942 construc-

tion began on the new steel plant. By 1945 steel making operations were in production. The construction and operation of Columbia Steel mill (later U.S. Steel) changed everything!   In 1945 Mayor Wootton asked civic clubs to suggest names for a new community celebration. Dr. James S. Chadwick and S. Dwight Packard, representing American Fork Lions and Rotary Club, nominated “Steel Days,” to be celebrated on Labor Day. It was accepted.   There was no celebration held during 1963, 1964, and 1965. Steel Days almost died of natural causes. Civic clubs were no longer willing to take over the management of the city celebration. Mayor Glen Anderson initiated a smaller “Community Day” in 1965. The American Fork Recreation Committee presented a bigger “Pet and Hobby Show” and a short evening program was held, followed by a meager fireworks display, but it didn’t replace the mammoth celebration to which the town had become accustomed.   A full-blown celebration was held again in 1966. Steel Days has grown and improved as the years have passed. There have been many changes-many changes, most for the better. American Fork City has been celebrating since 1865 and look forward to many more years of community celebrations. Source: American Fork City Growing Years by Betty G. Spencer

THE BIG SHOW   SHeDAISY will headline the 2012 Steel Days Big Show/Fireworks Display on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the American Fork High School, 510 North 600 East. Flashback Brothers will be the opener. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.   SHeDAISY is an award winning, contemporary country music group who burst onto the scene back in the days when big hats and “achy breaky” music ruled the country roost. The band is made up of sisters, Kristyn, Kassidy, and Kelsi Osborn.   Those who are familiar with SHeDAISY are well aware of the music they have created. Their songs have run the gamut from a rare sort of musical beauty to snarky tracks where it is clear that their collective tongue was firmly planted in the cheek during the writing process.   SHeDAISY’s debut album was “The Whole SheBang,” which included songs such as “Little GoodByes” and “I Will.” Another favorite album released in 2006 by SHeDAISY was “Fortuneteller’s Melody,” which included the songs “Whatever It Takes” and “God Bless the American Housewife.” The Flashback Brothers will open the concert with classic rock hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

The Big Show is presented by TaxHawk
