JR Grand Marshal Sinjun Halladay to serve as Jr. Grand Marshal Sinjun Halladay, a 17-year-old American Fork High School student, has been named the Junior Grand Marshal for the 2014 Steel Days Grand Parade in recognition of his heroic efforts to save a man stranded on Utah Lake and in danger of drowning. He is the son of Missy and Bryan Halladay of American Fork. This year’s parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. The parade will begin at the intersection of 300 West and Main Street, then travel east to 100 East where it will turn north and continue to 400 North. Halladay was fishing with friends at Utah Lake on the evening of May 29, 2014, when a young man who was wet and wearing a life jacket came walking toward the group. The man was shaking and acting oddly, and when questioned by the others, he said his jet ski had broken down in the lake and that his friend was still out there. They sat the man down, gave him a blanket and

14 - American Fork Steel Days

called 911, then Sinjun drove to the southwest point of the boat harbor to search for the man’s friend. When he arrived and saw a group of men with trucks there, he told them about the missing jet skier and asked them to direct their headlights onto the lake. “It was really choppy that night. There were like four-foot swells, so it was hard to see anything,” Halladay said. Then he heard a sound coming from the lake - a moan. He decided he needed to take the search to the water. Halladay was uniquely qualified to be at that place at that moment. He has taught swim lessons with his mother at his aunt’s pool in Alpine for six years and spent four years participating on local swim teams. Despite not having a life jacket, Halladay asked one of the men with him to watch and direct him, then jumped in the lake and began swimming. “I know that people die every year in that lake, it’s really dangerous, so I just

made a split decision and went out,” he said. The man obtained a spotlight and stood on his truck, directing the light toward the lake while shouting directions to Halladay. After about 10 minutes of swimming, Halladay reached the man after seeing his hand above one of the waves. The man was hypothermic and acting incoherently. As he reached the man, rescue personnel arrived and lit up the lake with their lights. “I flipped him over onto his back and he started to fall asleep and I made him stay awake because that’s what you’re supposed to do,” Hal-

JR. Grand Marshal laday said. He gripped the man’s life jacket and started pulling him toward shore. The return trip took about 20 to 30 minutes. When they reached land, Halladay handed the man over to a firefighter and was checked out himself by an ambulance crew. A sheriff was grateful but surprised they had survived. “He said he was expecting to pull two bodies out of the lake that night,” Halladay said. The two men Halladay helped that night were students at his high school and were able to participate in graduation ceremonies the next day, he said.

Grand Marshals Hutchings to serve as parade grand marshals Longtime American Fork residents B. Kay and Kathleen Hutchings will serve as grand marshals of the 2014 Steel Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 19. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. and travel along American Fork’s Main Street and 100 East. B. Kay and Kathleen Hutchings have spent their entire married life living in American Fork. Kay grew up in Lehi and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas before marrying Kathleen, who has been a lifelong resident of American Fork. Kay was studying electronics at what is now Utah Valley University when Kathleen’s brother asked him to help out one summer at their family business. Kathleen’s family owned Durfey Dry Cleaners, which has operated locations in Salt Lake and Utah counties. Kay worked for the business until about 1971, when he and a friend decided to purchase a coin-operated laundromat in the Salt Lake City area. They owned that until 1974, when

the property was purchased by a neighboring business for parking lot space. It was then that Kathleen’s father offered to sell Kay the American Fork location of Durfey Dry Cleaners. Running this business became his career, and he and Kathleen owned and operated the business for four decades before it was purchased by their sons last November. “I enjoyed it. It was good to us,” Kay said. “It was just an opportunity to meet a lot of people.” Kay began working as a volunteer firefighter for American Fork City in 1978 and continued that service for 30 years. In 1984, he became a member of the American Fork City Council and served a four-year term. He was then re-elected to the council, but after two years he decided to run for the mayor’s position. He won that election and ended up spending a total of six years as a city councilman and four years as American Fork’s mayor.

B. Kay and Kathleen Hutchings The American Fork Fitness Center was built during Kay’s tenure as mayor. He was also instrumental in obtaining a state grant to run some water lines in the city; when there was money left over, he suggested that a water line be run under the freeway on the south end of the city, a move that allowed future business development in the area. Kay helped obtain more water rights for the city to prepare it for future growth, and it was while Kay was mayor that American Fork first collected a million dollars in sales tax during one year. In his spare time, Kay has rebuilt many classic automobiles, receiving accolades for his work at car shows and selling the vehicles to clients around the world. His wife Kathleen has supported Kay in his business and his community service while raising the couple’s six children, who all graduated from American Fork High School. The Hutchings have 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Picnic in the park JULY 18 • 6 p.m. • American Fork Amphitheater For a lot of fun at no cost, families in American Fork can attend the annual Picnic in the Park, an activity full of games, prizes and a movie on the big screen. For about seven years, Steel Days has been presenting the Picnic in the Park activity. Held at the American Fork Amphitheater at Quail Cove, 851 E. 700 North, the picnic includes a large variety of carnival-type games that young children can participate in free of charge. Families can bring their own picnic or purchase food from the vendors on site, and a family movie is shown at dusk on a large blow-up screen. This year’s event will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, July

Picnic in the park 18; the movie will be “Despicable Me 2.” “It’s just a fun family event where the kids don’t have to pay for the carnival games, the kids don’t have to pay to watch the movie,” said Kristin Kmetzsch, chairperson of the Picnic in the Park. Volunteers run games for the children such as a football and beanball toss and balloon darts. The children can win toys and candy as they play. There will also be face painting available, a train for the children to ride and large blow-up toys like slides and bouncy houses. Chick-fil-A is a sponsor of the event and will have its famous cow there as well as provide food for the volunteers. American Fork City police and firefighters will be at the event to talk to the children, do demonstrations and exhibit emergency vehicles and police dogs. “I love that it’s just a fun family night for the moms and dads to come and not worry about price point,” Kmetzsch said.

Bob Phelps 5K

SATURDAY, JULY 19 • 7 a.m. • 96 North Center Jim Phelps said his brother Bob wasn’t one to seek the spotlight, preferring instead to stay in the background. However, having his name attached to the American Fork Steel Days annual 5K race is an honor Bob certainly deserved. “He deserved it for everything that he’d done and everybody that knew him,” Jim Phelps said. Bob Phelps had helped organize the 5K - now known as the Bob Phelps Steel Days 5K Race - for many years before he passed away from cancer in 2007. Jim said he, his brother and a group of friends who enjoyed running had taken over management of the race in about 1992. The group continued organizing the race each year for about 12 years, then management was transferred to another group. In about 2007, the city approached Jim Phelps and asked if he would be interested in managing the race again - and he’s been doing it ever since. Around the time Jim Phelps took over the race again, then AmericanAFFork City Councilman told him that the Steel Days Ad 2014.pdf 1 7/2/2014Rick 1:58:18Storrs PM decision had been made to change the name to honor his

brother Bob. Bob Phelps lived in American Fork most of his life and ran his own accounting firm in the city. He was well-known in the community, serving on the city’s recreation committee and coaching little league football. The children’s race aspect of the annual 5K event was important to Bob, which is why it’s been kept and expanded, Jim Phelps said. The kids’ event called the Children’s Half Mile - was for kids up to 12 years old until last year when the Toddler Trot quarter mile event was added for children 0 to 4 years old. Including the children helps promote interest in running and exercising, Jim said; typically about 600 people participate in the overall event on race day, with about 150 of those being children. This year’s Bob Phelps Steel Days 5K Race will be held on Saturday, July 19, at 96 N. Center with the 5K Run/Walk beginning at 7 a.m. Jim Phelps said residents can participate in the event without having to run, encouraging them to enter the walking division. The Toddler Trot will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the Kids Run will begin at 8:30 a.m.

GRAND PARADE SATURDAY, JULY 19 • 9:30 a.m. • Main Street It is one of the most popular and possibly the most wellattended event held each year during American Fork’s Steel Days celebration: the Grand Parade. Amy Hone, who is now in her second year serving as chairperson of the parade, said it is estimated that about 12,000 people line the city’s Main Street and 100 East to view the colorful entries each year. “It’s a very long-standing tradition for American Fork to have the Grand Parade,” Hone said. American Fork has had a city celebration each year since the early 1900s with the exception of three or four years in the 1960s, she said, and the celebration has always included a parade. “I think it’s a great thing for the community,” she said, adding that it’s a tradition in many local families for children and grandchildren that have moved away from the area to return home and attend the Steel Days Grand Parade. In this way, the parade encourages family unity. One of the strengths of the parade is the diversity of the entries, Hone said. They range from city floats and royal-

ties from neighboring communities to commercial entries and marching bands. “The American Fork High School Marching Band is a really popular thing,” she said, adding that the AFHS band is always put at the beginning of the parade. The parade always has the traditional grand marshal, but about three years ago it was decided to add another element to the parade that is unique: the Steel Days parade now also has a Junior Grand Marshal. Hone said each year a local youth, usually age 17 or younger, is chosen for this position who has gone through a struggle or a challenge in life or acted in a heroic fashion in some way. This year’s Junior Grand Marshal will be Sinjun Halladay, an AFHS student who saved the life of a man who was stranded on Utah Lake. This year’s parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. The parade will begin at the intersection of 300 West and Main Street, then travel east to 100 East where it will turn north and continue to 400 North.

BIG SHOW & FIREWORKS BIG SHOW TO FEATURE THE FLASHBACK BROTHERS SATURDAY, JULY 19 • 7 p.m. • American Fork High School American Fork’s Steel Days 2014 celebration will culminate on Saturday, July 19, with the Big Show and a big fireworks display, two popular and long-standing traditions that attract thousands each year. “I think it brings out a sense of community within our city that at least once a year we come together in an entire week and we celebrate,” said American Fork City Councilman Brad Frost, who serves as the city council liaison to the Steel Days Committee. Each year, the city invites a major musical act to perform at the Big Show, with the audience enjoying the concert outdoors on the American Fork High School campus. Food vendors are available so families can enjoy dinner and treats as well. This year’s act will be the Flashback Brothers, a rock band playing classic hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Two years ago, the Flashback Brothers performed as the opening act for SHeDAISY at the Big Show; so many people commented

are shot off from the high school area but can be seen throughout the city. It’s tradition in American Fork to have a spectacular fireworks show, Frost said. “I think it’s a cut above the rest,” he added. The best thing about the fireworks, however, is that it brings the city together as families and friends assemble for barbecues and to view the fireworks show as Steel Days comes to a close. “I love the fact that I know that in backyards all throughout American Fork City, neighbors and friends have come together to watch it,” Frost said. The gates at the Big Show will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. The show will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the fireworks.
