AF Symphony MONDAY, JULY 6 • 7 p.m. American Fork Amphitheater

Sponsored by

The American Fork Symphony will kick off the 2015 American Fork Steel Days celebration with a concert of patriotic musical selections on Monday, July 6, at 7 p.m. Joining the symphony in its performance will be popular folk-country group Joshua Creek. This outdoor concert will be presented in the American Fork Amphitheater, 850 E. 700 North, American Fork. Admission is free. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early for best seating. Titled “Salute to America,” the concert will include a variety of patriotic and “pops” favorites including “American Salute,” “Gershwin In Concert,” “Armed Forces Salute” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The orchestra will join Joshua Creek in performing several of the band’s hits including “Flying to Freedom” and “Faith, Hope & Charity.” The concert will be conducted by Shauna Smith and Randen Heywood. The American Fork Symphony has proven itself to be a valuable addition to the cultural life of American Fork and its surrounding communities. A non-profit organization, the symphony performs five concerts each year with a concert scheduled each October, December, February, April and July. The April concert is the symphony’s Salute to Youth concert and features talented youth musicians selected through an audition process. The approximately 80 members of the American Fork Symphony reside in communities throughout Utah County and southern Salt Lake County. Symphony members donate their time and talents to the orchestra, participating on a volunteer basis. Joshua Creek’s unique blend of storytelling and folk-country music leaves audiences both laughing and crying. The group has played such venues and events as Abravanal Hall, the Tabernacle at Temple Square, Dodger Stadium (singing the National Anthem), the Sandy Amphitheater, the SCERA Theatre, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, Swiss Days and many other city and county concert series and summer festivals. The group also plays at corporate events on a regular basis. During the last eight years, the band has released five CDs and one live DVD which have received local and national radio airplay including the No. 1 Christian-Country hit “What Kinda Car?” They have also won regional and national songwriting awards including a Pearl Award for “Songwriter of the Year.” Their most recent CD, “I Still Believe,” is a Christmas CD and was released last fall. Grand Marshals Jay S. & Linda N. Allen American Fork residents Jay S. and Linda N. Allen have been chosen to serve as the grand marshals of the 2015 Steel Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11. Jay S. Allen is the perfect example of an American Fork Caveman, having graduated from American Fork High School, taught at AFHS for 46 years and worked at Timpanogos Cave National Monument for 47 years. A lifelong resident of American Fork, Jay graduated from AFHS in 1964, then continued his education at Brigham Young University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in zoology and a minor in botany. The original plan was to attend medical school, but after college graduation he obtained a summer job working for the National Park Service at Timpanogos Cave. The job changed his life, and he has worked at the cave every summer since then. “I loved the job up there so well, being outside, hiking all day,” he said. Jay estimates he has hiked to Timpanogos Cave more than 3,100 times - covering a distance of more than

50,000 miles on the trails - and conducted thousands of tours. He first worked as a cave tour guide and was eventually made lead ranger at the caves, a position he still holds today. He is in charge of taking care of the public’s needs at the top of the trail as well as mentoring, coaching and training guides. To keep his summers free for his cave work, Jay decided to obtain his teaching certification and landed a job at AFHS in 1969. He recently retired from AFHS after teaching biology, human biology bioethics and zoology/botany for 46 years. When Jay was 17 years old, he started working as the driver of the local ambulance in American Fork and kept that job for about 10 years, responding to emergency calls throughout northern Utah County. He also drove trucks part-time for Savage Brothers Trucking for seven years. His hobbies include riding motorcycles, fishing, gardening, hiking, camping and being outside. While teaching at AFHS, he started a garden at the high school where students planted and cared for vegetables and fruit trees.

Grand Marshals Linda spent her childhood in Palmyra on a dairy farm and moved to American Fork during her junior year in high school when her father took a job managing the dairy farm at the state prison. She met Jay while they were in high school. She graduated from AFHS and went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree in business education from BYU. The couple were married in 1968 and Linda taught business classes at Payson High School for a year while Jay finished his degree. She then worked for a year for the Crippled Children’s Service, overseeing the work of four doctors and other staff who traveled to outlying areas of Utah to provide medical services to children without regular access to doctors. She quit her job with the children’s service to become a stay-at-home mom to her first child and eventually she raised four children - Jason, Trudy, Robyn and Brian. In 1983, she went back to work for Lamoreaux Appraisal Service, a job she continues to work at today. She has served in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and said her favorite role has been serving in Primary and teaching the children there. The Allens have 16 grandchildren.

Jr. Grand Marshal Will Merkley Whether practicing the piano, pitching on the baseball field or monitoring his Type I diabetes, American Fork resident Will Merkley is a determined and competitive youth who wants to achieve his goals. “He is a hard worker and he will stick with something until it’s done and it doesn’t matter how long it takes,” said Will’s mother Amy Merkley. Will has been chosen to serve as the Junior Grand Marshal for the 2015 American Fork Steel Days Grand Parade. The son of Amy and Chris Merkley, 11-yearold Will is a brother to 8-year-old Jake and will be a sixth-grader this fall at Barratt Elementary School. Will has been studying piano for almost seven years with his mom as his teacher. He practices for two hours a day, five days a week, and has won many honors and awards at various piano festivals. He received an award of merit at the state level of the Reflections program for a song he wrote. His true love, however, is baseball. Will plays on a super league team that competes in Utah and Salt Lake

counties. He likes playing the short stop, second base and pitcher positions. “I like to strike people out,” he said. “I also got a triple play last year.” Will also likes to run 5K races. “I like the feeling of people cheering me on and running to the finish line,” he said. Amy Merkley said her son is very good at taking care of his Type I diabetes. Diagnosed with the disease at 10 months old, Will wears an insulin pump and checks his blood sugar about eight times a day. “He’s very responsible to take care of himself and to make sure that he doesn’t let it stop him from anything he wants to achieve,” Amy Merkley said, adding, “There’s really nothing that he can’t do. You just need to take a little extra precaution and he goes for it.” Will is a straight-A student and loves to learn about science, math and social studies. If he can’t be a baseball player when he grows up, he likes the idea of being a scientist. He recommends other students study and work hard in school to achieve their goals.

Bob Phelps 5k, Kids Run & Toddler Trot

Saturday, July 11 • 7 a.m. 96 N. Center

5K Title Sponsor

Jim Phelps said his brother Bob wasn’t one to seek the spotlight, preferring instead to stay in the background. However, having his name attached to the American Fork Steel Days annual 5K race is an honor Bob certainly deserved. “He deserved it for everything that he’d done and everybody that knew him,” Jim Phelps said. Bob Phelps had helped organize the 5K - now known as the Bob Phelps Steel Days 5K Race - for many years before he passed away from cancer in 2007. Jim said he, his brother and a group of friends who enjoyed running had taken over management of the race in about 1992. The group continued organizing the race each year for about 12 years, then management was transferred to another group. In about 2007, the city approached Jim Phelps and asked if he would be interested in managing the race again. Around the time Jim Phelps took over the race again, then American Fork City Councilman Rick Storrs told him

that the decision had been made to change the name to honor his brother Bob. Bob Phelps lived in American Fork most of his life and ran his own accounting firm in the city. He was wellknown in the community, serving on the city’s recreation committee and coaching little league football. The children’s race aspect of the annual 5K event was important to Bob, which is why it’s been kept and expanded, Jim Phelps said. The kids race was for kids 0 to 12 years old until the Toddler Trot event was added for children 0 to 4 years old. This year’s Bob Phelps Steel Days 5K Race will be held on Saturday, July 11, at the American Fork Fire/Rescue Building, 96 N. Center, with the 5K Run/Walk beginning at 7 a.m. Residents can participate in the event without having to run by entering the walking division. The Toddler Trot quarter-mile event will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the Kids Run half-mile event for ages 5-12 will begin at 8:30 a.m. For registration information, visit afcity.org.

Grand Parade Saturday, July 11 • 9:30 a.m. Main Street & 100 East It is one of the most popular and possibly the most well-attended event held each year during American Fork’s Steel Days celebration: the Grand Parade. About 12,000 people line the city’s Main Street and 100 East to view the colorful entries each year. American Fork has had a city celebration each year since the early 1900s with the exception of three or four years in the 1960s, and the celebration has always included a parade. It’s a tradition for many local families for children and grandchildren that have moved away from the area to return home and attend the Steel Days Grand Parade. In this way, the parade encourages family unity. One of the strengths of the parade is the diversity of its entries. They range from city floats and royalties from neighboring communities to commercial entries and marching bands. The American Fork High School Marching Band is a particular favorite. The parade always has the traditional grand marshal, but a few years ago the decision was made to add another element to the parade that is unique: a junior grand marshal. Each year a local youth, usually age 17 or younger, is chosen for this position. This year’s Grand Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11. The parade will begin at the intersection of 300 West and Main Street and travel east along Main Street to 100 East, then turn north and end at 400 North.

Grist Mill Dedication Saturday, July 11 • 1 p.m. Centennial Park The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneer Monument #189, the Log Cabin Grist Mill. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m. in Centennial Park, 300 S. Center, American Fork. The dedication is being held in conjunction with the 2015 Steel Days celebration. The Log Cabin Grist Mill monument has been created in recognition of the first flour mill built in American Fork in 1851. The mill was built by Arza Matson Adams, a co-founder of American Fork along with his uncle Stephen Chipman. The Log Cabin Grist Mill Monument is a replica of the original Adams mill and is a gift to the residents of American Fork City representing hundreds of hours of volunteer work. The mill project received more than $11,000 in financial and in-kind contributions from descendants of Arza Adams, interested citizens, the American Fork City Parks Department, American Legion

Post 49, Lehi Block Plant and the Timpanogos Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers. The monument project has been headed up by Dan Adams, who is an American Fork resident and great-grandson of Arza Adams. Across the street from Dan Adams’ home, a pioneer log cabin had been incorporated into a larger home. In 2012, when that home was going to be demolished, Dan Adams proposed the log cabin be uncovered and preserved. A crew of people removed the cabin log by log; the logs were numbered so they could be reassembled and placed at the back of the property. Adams said he wanted to re-create his great-grandfather’s grist mill as a memorial to his ancestor and all the other early settlers of American Fork. Two informational plaques will be installed at the grist mill so residents can visit the memorial and learn about the city’s pioneer past. The original stone wheels used to grind grain at Arza Adams’ mill can be seen at his grave in the city cemetery.

For a lot of fun at no cost, families in American Fork can attend the annual Picnic in the Park, an activity full of games, prizes, food and fun. This year’s picnic will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 5 to 7:00 p.m. For about eight years, Steel Days has been presenting the Picnic in the Park activity. Planned this year at Art Dye Park, 1000 N. 550 East, American Fork, the picnic will include a large variety of carnival-type games that young children can participate in free of charge. Families can bring their own picnic or purchase food from vendors on site. There will also be a petting zoo for the kids. “It’s just a fun, family event where the kids don’t have to pay for the carnival games,” said Kristin Page, chairperson of the Picnic in the Park. Volunteers will run games for the children such as a football and beanbag toss and balloon darts. The children can win toys and candy as they play. All the games have been rebuilt and given a facelift for this year’s picnic. There will be face painting available as well as large blow-up toys like slides and bounce houses. Chick-fil-A is a sponsor of the event and will provide a train for the children to ride. Chick-fil-A’s famous cow will be there as well and the business will provide food for the volunteers. American Fork City Police and Firefighters will be at the event to talk to the children, do demonstrations and exhibit emergency vehicles and police dogs. “I love that it’s just a fun, family night for the moms and dads to come and not worry about price

The 2015 Steel Days celebration will culminate on the evening of Saturday, July 11, with the Big Show featuring Nathan Osmond and the annual Steel Days fireworks display. The Big Show will begin at 7 p.m. at the Art Dye Complex, 550 E. 1000 North, American Fork, with the gates opening at 6 p.m. The fireworks will follow the Big Show. A show from Paul Brewer just helps capture it. His show will bring attention to your family members, bring laughs to the group, and bring back a smile when people remember his show.
