Committee Message For approximately 100 years, the community of American Fork has gathered together for a few days each summer to celebrate its history, its achievements and its residents. The name “Steel Days” recognizes the economic impact on American Fork of the opening of Geneva Steel in 1944 and the hard-working people who moved to the city as a result and had a major impact on the growth of the community. Some may ask if Steel Days is still the appropriate name for the celebration in today’s day and age. In my opinion, it is. Residents, businesses, city employees and others working together is what gives the strength of our city its “steel”-type quality. We encourage all residents to participate in the many different events and activities planned during the 2016 Steel Days week. Beginning with a special tea party with Miss American Fork and a patriotic concert by the American Fork Symphony, the week will continue with events for all ages and culminate with the popular Grand Parade, Big Show and fireworks. Please take a minute to look through this magazine and plan your week. Some events have had exciting changes such as the Picnic in the Park, which will have more activ-

ities and a wide variety of food trucks attending this year. The Kickball Tournament is new this year, and the Bob Phelps Steel Days Race is adding a 10K route alongside the traditional 5K, Toddler Trot and Kids Mile. We express thanks to American Fork Mayor J.H. Hadfield, our committee members, Alissa Dailey, Xani Haynie, Laurie Kaplan, Aimee Kite, Nadine Milham Rob Shelton and the employees of American Fork City who are instrumental in making this celebration happen each year. We also thank our sponsors for helping make many of the Steel Days events free for the community. Come join us in celebrating life in American Fork.

Grand Marshals

SPONSORED BY

John, Pam Miller chosen as parade grand marshals John Miller, former director of bands at American Fork High School, and his wife Pam Miller have been chosen to serve as grand marshals of the 2016 American Fork Steel Days Grand Parade. John Miller retired at the end of the 2015-16 school year after having worked at AFHS for 30 years. Under his direction, the AFHS Marching Band program has grown in size and excellence to where it has gained national recognition and competed on a national level. In recent years, the marching band has performed in the Fiesta Bowl, twice in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, twice in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and in the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. It has also been a finalist and six times a semi-finalist at the Bands of America National Marching Band Championships. It has

28 - American Fork Steel Days

placed first in the Bands of America Western Regionals seven times. When he first arrived at AFHS, Miller believed the marching band program should be operating on a national level. He started going to symposiums hosted by Bands of America where the nation’s top band directors were teaching up-and-coming directors how to make it happen. The main thing he learned was that band directors can’t do it all themselves; they have to delegate and develop a staff. Last year, the marching band had about 26 people on staff. Many are alumni of the AFHS Marching Band. Another principle he learned was that he needed to get his band out into the world to see what the best bands were doing. He took them to nationals and let them see the level of excellence achieved by the na-

tion’s top bands, and they came back excited to reach that level themselves. When asked why he believes marching band is important for students, Miller said marching band can involve every student and their family. Nobody sits on the bench. “It allows every kid to be a part of it even if they’re not the greatest player in the world,” he said. With his retirement, Miller said he has received many emails recently from former students. Some were marginal players that have shared with him the feeling of success they obtained through doing hard things in marching band and how, as a result, they have had the courage to do hard things in their adult life. “I think everybody wants to feel success and to be part of something bigger than them,” Miller said. “Once the kids start getting involved and start tasting it, they’re hooked.” Miller’s influence on the AFHS band program has also been felt off the field. The AFHS Wind Symphony performed at the 2004 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and has twice performed at the Utah Music Educators State Conference. His jazz band has twice placed as a runner-up at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival and placed first seven times at the Peaks Jazz Festival. His recognitions earned in education include being selected in 1999 as Teacher of The Year for Alpine School District. He has received eight Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association and three Outstanding Achievement Awards from the Utah Music Educators Association. In 2009 and 2016, he received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the National Federation of High School Activities Association for the Western States. In 2010, he was the presented with the Ray Smith Jazz Music Educator of the Year award and in 2015 was named Utah Music Educator of the Year by the Utah Music Educators Association. This past year, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sorensen Arts Foundation. In 2006, Miller became the founding director of the Wasatch Winds Symphonic Band, an adult community band. Under his direction, the band has grown to more than 85 members and already has an established concert series in the community. Six years ago, Miller started the band leadership clinic held each year to train band student leaders from around the state. He continues to serve as a mentor to many younger teachers and is a frequent clinician with their bands. John and Pam Miller have six children - all of whom went through the AFHS band program - and 19 grandchildren. Pam Miller is a Licensed Practical Nurse and has served in that capacity for 40 years. According to her husband, she has been the perfect “Band Director Wife” and has strongly supported him in the responsibilities of his career. She has served in many LDS Church capacities but has a special love for the youth, having served for several terms as Girls Camp director and in Young Women callings.

Band Member Invite Former AFHS band members invited to walk in parade to honor retiring director John Miller In honor of John Miller, who recently retired after 30 years as band director at American Fork High School, alumni who participated in Miller’s band program are invited to be part of the 2016 Steel Days Grand Parade. John Miller and his wife Pam will serve as grand marshals of the parade, which will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 9. Behind them in the parade will be the current AFHS Marching Band, and longtime band volunteer Dan Adams is heading up the effort to have hundreds of former band members following after the marching band. “It’s another way of honoring Mr. Miller and the impact that he’s had on thousands of kids over the course of his career,” Adams said. Band alumni wishing to participate should arrive at the parade lineup area at Lions Park, 100 S. 300 West, American Fork, by 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 9. Adams

encouraged those participating to wear the school colors of red and white. The alumni will walk behind banners indicating the years they were part of the band.

Grand Parade

CARS PROVIDED BY

SATURDAY, JULY 9 Main Street & 100 East Join with a crowd of more than 12,000 people as they celebrate the city of American Fork at the 2016 Steel Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 9, at 10 a.m. This year, the parade will begin at the intersection of 300 West and Main Street and travel east on Main Street to 100 East. At 100 East, the parade will turn north and continue to 400 North. The popular Grand Parade brings out the entire community in a celebration of the life and achievements of American Fork residents. American Fork has had a city celebration each year since the early 1900s with the exception of three or four years in the 1960s, and the celebration has always included a parade. It’s a tradition in many local families for children and grandchildren who have moved away from the area to return home and attend the Steel Days Grand Parade. In this way, the parade encourages family unity.
