History of Steel Days   The residents of American Fork have always enjoyed a vibrant city celebration. In the early days American Fork City celebrated Timber Day, an allday village picnic with music, entertainment, and games. It began about 1865 and continued until 1904. Next, came Liberty Days, truly patriotic July celebration, which was held on July 4 and July 24 on alternate years. Liberty Days were observed until 1926.   The City then transitioned to celebrate Poultry Days. A modest celebration was held in July 1927. Things really took off in 1928. Miss Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. On December 4, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Eliminating all celebrations for the duration of World War II. After World War II there would be no more Poultry Day Celebration. No community celebration of any kind was held in 1942 or 1943, but a small neighborhood party was held in 1944.   Steel Days in American Fork has been a tradition since 1945. It began when Mayor O. De Vere Wootton decided the Poultry Day Celebration no longer reflected the economy of the town. The WWII years brought much change, including the steel industry and declining poultry profits. In 1942 construction began on the new steel plant. By 1945 steel making operations were in production. The construction and operation of Columbia Steel mill (later U.S. Steel) changed everything!   In 1945 Mayor Wootton asked civic clubs to suggest names for a new community celebration. Dr. James S. Chadwick and S. Dwight Packard, representing American Fork Lions and Rotary Club, nominated “Steel Days,” to be celebrated on Labor Day. It was accepted.   There was no celebration held during 1963, 1964, and 1965. Steel Days almost died of natural causes. Civic clubs were no longer willing to take over the management of the city celebration. Mayor Glen Anderson initiated a smaller “Community Day” in 1965. The American Fork Recreation Committee presented a bigger “Pet and Hobby Show” and a short evening program was held, followed by a meager fireworks display, but it didn’t replace the mammoth celebration to which the town had be10

come accustomed.   A full-blown celebration was held again in 1966. Steel Days has grown and improved as the years have passed. There have been many changes-many changes, most for the better. American Fork City has been celebrating since 1865 and look forward to many more years of community celebrations. Source: American Fork City Growing Years by Betty G. Spencer

at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, in the American Fork Amphitheater, 850 E. 700 North, American Fork. Admission is free. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early for best seating. Titled “Salute to America,” the event will present a variety of “pops” favorites including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Armed Forces Salute.” The orchestra will also perform a medley of Gershwin tunes and music from the Star Wars movie “The Empire Strikes Back.” The concert will be conducted by Shauna Smith. The American Fork Symphony has proven itself to be a valuable addition to the cultural life of American Fork and its surrounding communities. A non-profit organization, the symphony performs five concerts each year with a concert scheduled each October, December, February, April and July. Some concerts spotlight adult soloists, and the April concert is the symphony’s Salute to Youth concert featuring talented youth musicians selected through an audition process. The approximately 80 members of the American Fork Symphony reside in communities throughout Utah County. Symphony members donate their time and talents to the orchestra, participating on a volunteer basis. The symphony’s professional conductor, Shauna Smith, is a well-known musician in American Fork, having served as director of orchestras at both American Fork

Junior High School and American Fork High School for more than a decade. She began playing the violin at age 10 and has played for many dignitaries including Barry Goldwater, Ronald and Nancy Reagan and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In college, Smith played with the Brigham Young University Philharmonic, the Arizona State University Symphony and the Weber State Symphony. She also sang, danced and fiddled for BYU’s Young Ambassadors and toured India and Sri Lanka with the group. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from BYU in 1995. She completed her master’s degree in education in 2000. During and after college, she has performed with numerous ensembles throughout Utah. She played in the violin section of the American Fork Symphony for many years before becoming the symphony’s conductor. During her years as a teacher at AFJHS and AFHS, Smith has seen her students compete in many district, state and national festivals and competitions. Her students have achieved superior ratings and have ranked second in national competitions at the Lincoln Center in New York City. She also teaches private lessons to more than 20 students in her home studio. Smith has been a member of the Utah Music Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the Alpine Education Association. Currently she is the orchestra vice president for the Utah Music Teachers Association. She loves her job, her students and the opportunity to work with the American Fork Symphony, but she says her greatest accomplishment is her family. She and her husband Mark are the parents of six children and have two grandchildren.

Grand Marshals Maynes to serve as parade grand marshals Former teachers and lifelong American Fork residents Douglas A. and Janice Dean Mayne will serve as grand marshals of the 2013 American Fork Steel Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 20. The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. at 300 W. Main in American Fork and proceed east to 100 East. The parade will then turn north onto 100 East and continue to 400 North. The Maynes invite all friends, family and former students to celebrate this honor with them at a reception in the garden behind their home, located at 381 W. Main, American Fork, immediately following the parade. “They are just quiet leaders,” said Kathleen Boswell, a daughter of the Maynes, said of her parents, adding that her parents’ service and teaching did not end when they left their classrooms. “They did not just put in their eight hours. When they would come home

from school, they would continue to take phone calls and work,” she said. Douglas A. Mayne, 79, grew up in American Fork and was a basketball player for the American Fork High School Cavemen with an accurate long-range shot that would now be called a three-pointer. During high school, he became friends with a girl named Janice Dean, and they have now been married for 61 years. Doug graduated from Brigham Young University and spent 32 years as an elementary school teacher in Alpine School District, teaching fourth grade for one year and fifth grade for 31 years. He spent 30 of those years at Forbes Elementary School in American Fork. He also taught outdoor education for more than 20 years at Clear Creek Camp in Scofield, a camp for fifth-grade students sponsored by Alpine School District. At Clear Creek he taught students about

plants, insects and animals as well as the history of the area. Janice Dean Mayne also grew up in American Fork and after marrying her high school sweetheart, she worked for the telephone company until Douglas finished his college education. Then Janice started college to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher, eventually graduating from BYU. She taught for one year at Spanish Fork Junior High School and then spent the rest of her 32 years as a teacher at American Fork Junior High School teaching U.S. history and world geography. She also spent time overseeing the school’s student government. She took two years sabbatical from teaching, spending that time teaching geography at BYU and obtaining her master’s degree from BYU in geography. Often Janice had students that qualified for the National History Fair held each summer at the University of Maryland, and Janice would spend time helping each student raise money to attend the fair and accompanying them there. In 1972, Janice was named Geography Teacher of the Year for the United States and Canada and also received the Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education in 1997. She has served on the American Fork City Council and most recently has been a member of the Save Harrington School Committee. Douglas and Janice Mayne have served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one at a humanitarian center in Salt Lake City and one at an employment center in American Fork. Both of them love to garden and are often found working in the large vegetable garden and flower beds at their home. They have entered their produce in the Utah State Fair and won about 200 blue ribbons. The Maynes are the parents of four children: Kathleen (Mike) Boswell, Marsha (Craig) Powers, Doug (Lorraine) Mayne and Amy (Steve) Robinson. They have 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Jr Grand Marshal Paul Wilson to serve as Junior Grand Marshal A 14-year-old boy who has battled through brain cancer and the resulting loss of his sight has been selected to serve as the Junior Grand Marshal for the 2013 American Fork Steel Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 20. Paul Wilson of American Fork was 7 years old when he learned that he had two brain tumors, one the size of an orange at the base of his skull and another the size of a grape between his optic nerves. His sister Tori Wilson said Paul basically had to relearn everything, from walking and talking to eating. Then, about three years later, he had a mini stroke and lost all the progress he had made in learning Braille. This required him to relearn how to read and do math, she said. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Paul said that when he was 7, he prayed that he would get his sight back. Eventually he received a priesthood blessing, and the next morning he woke up with enough vision to get around his house and neighborhood. He can see colors, shapes and shadows; he and his sister laughed about a time when he entered the living room, didn’t see her on the couch and sat right on top of her. Paul has worked to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the American Cancer Society. While he was in elementary school, he taught the other children about Braille. He feels his purpose is to keep others uplifted and happy and to let them know they shouldn’t give up.
