Annexe for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Bonn, Germany
Urban Integration The UN Campus atmosphere is procured through the concise position and shape of the Annexe. The decision to build centrally with a compact footprint, gives a pronounced park character to the site. New and old buildings, witnesses to the different structural and political epochs meet as building blocks that form an informal and natural recreational and relaxation space for employees and visitors. Amidst the diversity of the buildings, the park deliberately omits formal gestures for a gentle, flowing landscape that offers plenty of space for light, air, people and vegetation. +52.0
The cylindrical tower bridges the vast difference in height between the the AAH and Langer Eugen and is an ideal partner for all surrounding buildings. in Rhe
Architecturally, the clear language of form is an expression of the functional requirements of the program and a meaningful interpretation of the significance of the UN Climate Change Secretariat’s universal philosophy. The level of design development is consistent with good judgment.

Rhein Balcony The Rhein Balcony is proposed as an elevated widening of the path to relax and overlook the Rhein River while enjoying the water’s fragrant and acoustic atmosphere. The space is informally designed and leaves generous seating to view the Rhein within airy grasses and scattered trees.

Terraces Flowing paths create a network of connections between the buildings within the UN Campus through varying spatial situations. Where walkways widen, seating options are integrated. Walking trails parallel the Rhein river and natural topography to overcome differences in height without steps.

The facade is emphasized by the vertical lines of the lamella and stops above the entrance floors to give the building a floating impression. The facade is constructed in three layers, which consist of adaptive vertical lamella, triple-glazed windows and an internal sunscreen to achieve Passive House standards. The interior sunscreen reacts to the sun to achieve maximum visual comfort and sun protection within the building, while the exterior lamella adjust their width to block direct sun, thus continuously changing the appearance of the building depending on the time of day.

The outermost layer is an active structure made of perforated steel that reacts to the direction of the sun to achieve an adjusted optimum daylight entry accounting for 30% of the required summer sun protection. The second layer is an insulated glass with moderate sun protection, combined with a third, highly reflective, roll-up interior shading layer that complements the external sun protection and ensures adaptability within the layering system.
