Walk talk Five tricks to help make walking a lifelong habit

1. Schedule it. If you treat walking as an automatic "must" on your daily list -- like brushing your teeth or taking your vitamins - then there's no debate about whether you will or won't do it. Before long, it'll be a rock-solid habit. 2. Get a buddy. Having a friend (human or dog) waiting for you to take a walk gets you out there day after day. Your walking "buddy" doesn't even have to be somebody you see. It can be a pal with whom you check in every day, by phone or online. If your pal doesn't get your daily "I just walked" message, he or she knows to give you a get-going poke. 3. Add some fun. Dying to play Boggle on your smartphone? Head outdoors or hop on the treadmill, and think up words while you walk. Addicted to recorded romance novels? Listen to them only while you stride along (just don't run into anything when it gets steamy!). Whatever makes walking more fun for you, do it! 4. Keep track. A walking log, a pedometer, even a little notation in your calendar - it's all good. That's because keeping track of your kilometres and goals increases your odds of sticking to your plan. 5. Reward yourself. We're all for bribery when it comes to exercise. Give yourself a walking goal of, say, 15 kilometres per week for a month, or 60 minutes a day for a week -- and if you're successful, treat yourself to a massage or a gotta-see-it movie or a new MP3 player for your walking tunes or recorded books.

This month’s Prizewinners The winners of this month’s Walking New Zealand promotion are: A588 Pedometer - Frances Harrison, Paeroa and a six month subscription extension to Walking New Zealand magazine, Mrs Heather Llewellin, Auckland. Congratulations to you both.

The Headland Sculpture on the Gulf on Waiheke Island which is also a great little walk in itself, is on again in 2015. There’s no doubt that it went very well, and in almost every area “exceeded their hopes and expectations” reports the organisers. They enjoyed wonderful weather and a record 45,000 visitors, the vast majority of whom greatly enjoyed the wider experience they made available to them. In all, over 80 works have been sold to date, which is a major achievement. Their primary focus was the sculpture exhibition itself.and they did not want to change it in any fundamental way, The only significant change they made to the walk itself, was reversing the direction. Again this met with a very positive response, many of those who had visited previous events finding it easier, the views better, and the experience more satisfying as a whole

Solo young adventurer tackles journey around NZ 19 year old Brando Yelavich, a kiwi has decided to set off on a solo adventure to fund raise for the Ronald McDonald House Charity for children.. He is walking around the whole of New Zealand and is living off of the land and the kindness of fellow kiwis for his whole trip. He started in February at Cape Reinga and has so far walked all the way down the North Island's West Coast, crossed the Cook Strait kayaked all through the

Marlborough Sounds, and plans to continue on down the West of the South Island then all the way back up the East Coast of NZ. Another reason why Brando is doing this journey is because he loves adventure and wants to complete this great feat which nobody has yet achieved. He has lived with dyslexia and ADHD his whole life which resulted in him struggling in school and was turned down by the NZ Army in 2012.

Holidays – keeping you healthy and happy We love them as a getaway and a time to explore, but according to a new study, a good holiday can contribute to your overall health and happiness. Research conducted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Tourismusforschung and unveiled at this year’s ITB Berlin Convention, confirmed that people who spend their money on trips, whether it be family trips, short breaks of even a concert are happier than those who acquire material objects such as jewellery and clothing. Researcher and work and organisational psychologist Dr. Jessica de Bloom said the study revealed the joy from purchasing material objects could not compare to the excitement and mental benefits experienced while on holiday. “One can compare a designer suit with an expensive watch, but not one’s diving holiday on the Red Sea and a colleague’s city break in Barcelona,”. “What is more, experiences do not wear out over time.”

4

Walking New Zealand, issue no 187 - 2013

Additionally, a holidaymakers’ health also benefits from the getaway, with the trip allowing them to recover from the stress of their day-to-day lives. The study found people who do not go on holiday for longer periods are at greater risk of becoming ill or even dying earlier than those who regularly go on breaks. However, frequent breaks rather than extended holidays are also crucial to maintaining good health. Every type of holiday examined by the study, whether a short break or a three-week hiking trip, produced evidence of comparative benefits to people’s health and wellbeing. “One cannot postpone one’s sleep or relaxation requirements,” Dr Bloom added. “One long summer holiday cannot compensate for a whole year of hard work and overtime.”

Queenstown has been named one of the world’s Top 25 Travellers’ Choice Destinations by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest online travel community. Walking the islands of West Sweden Crowded by over 8,000 granite islands, the beautiful Bohuslän coastline stretches from the handsome city of Gothenburg all the way to the Norwegian border. Picturesque islands are sprinkled with red-and-white fishing villages from where inviting paths lead out to reach small isolated bays, rocky promontories and secluded lighthouses. The beauty of this two-centre holiday on Sweden’s West Coast is that, despite its proximity to Gothenburg by rail, it has a remarkably remote feel to it. Spend a day or two walking round the idyllic Koster Islands before heading south to the delightful village of Fjällbacka. Walking routes head inland to reach mysterious Bronze Age rock carvings, while just a short ferry ride away are the remote Weather Islands, a remarkable marine reserve in the Skagerrak that is home to many colourful seabirds. With the bright-blue sea all around, it’s little surprise that this region is also famous for an astonishing array of seafood – mussels, oysters, langoustines and lobster – that form the basis of one of the world’s finest gastronomic traditions. There’s also the chance to experience Swedish Highlights by adding in extra days to explore the royal island of Marstrand, and the stylish cities of Gothenburg and Stockholm. walks O

n the western hills of Wellington’s Hutt Valley there is a number of interesting hill walks of varing grades with some suitable for all ages. One popular short one is from the Oakleigh Street in the uphill suburb of Maungaraki down to the Korokoro Dam and back. Starting from the carpark off Oakleigh Street the evenly graded track climbs a small mound and from then on its all down hill through fern and over a number of bridges to the Korokoro Dam. It is also used by mountain bikes. While there walk down and take a look up at the water flowing down over the dam and go back up and walk further on and take a look at the lake behind the dam. On the retun trip to the start at Oakleigh Street carpartk it is mostly up hill and can take a little longer. Longer walk Another way but longer to get to the dam is starting from Cornish Street entrance This evenly graded track follows an old steel pipeline from the Cornish Street entrance upstream through mature and regenerating bush to the Korokoro Dam. The dam was the first gravity fed concrete dam in New Zealand, built to supply water for the Petone Borough in 1903. A feature of New Zealand’s early european history is the large number of severely damaging fires that broke out from time to time in early New Zealand towns. These fires would destroy whole blocks of wooden buildings because they were built close

together. Early timber buildings in Petone suffered this fate even though an artesian water supply was available. Although the ratepayers were initially reluctant to endorse the funding of a dam, they were eventually persuaded to do so to get a water supply of sufficient pressure and volume. The waters of the Korokoro Stream were already in use by the Petone Woollen Mills when the Petone Borough proposed to utilise the stream for a water supply. The mill had a Totara timber dam on the lower reaches to drive a turbine at the mill. Early Maori used this route to link the Porirua and Wellington harbours.

Greenstone Caples Track more accessible

T

he Greenstone Caples Track is safer and more accessible to a wider range of people now a ten-year upgrade project by the Department of Conservation (DOC) nears completion. DOC Wakatipu Works Ranger Richard Struthers said improvements to the track were aimed at attracting more family groups and novice trampers. The easy 3-4 day valley walk 86 km from Queenstown is ideal for people who don’t want ■ to tackle anything too strenuous or who are new to tramping. As it also links to the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, the four huts along the Greenstone/Caples are often full to capacity during peak periods (January-March), with the high numbers of trampers wanting accommodation. The McKellar and Greenstone huts have recently been replaced and this winter, the 40year-old 12-bunk Mid Caples Hut will be demolished and replaced with a new 24-bunk hut. Accommodation won’t be available at this site for most of the winter months during construction, but the Upper Caples hut will remain open, a 90-minute walk further along the Caples Track. Once the new Mid Caples hut is completed, the Upper Caples Hut will be decommissioned. The section of track between the upper Greenstone and the upper Caples valley has been rebuilt over the past three summers, a major project that has involved rerouting the track to create an easier walk over McKellar Saddle. This raises this section to the standard of the remainder of the track. The upper Greenstone bridge has been replaced and several bridges installed in the Caples Valley over critical stream crossings. The carpark at the start of the track will be upgraded and enlarged soon. Meanwhile, on the Routeburn Track, a day

shelter will be built at the Routeburn Flats Hut to accommodate the high number of day walkers to the hut (it is only a two-hour walk from the Routeburn Roadend). Construction is due to begin during the coming winter. Two bridges on the track have been upgraded this season and the Routeburn Flats suspension bridge is currently being replaced. The track will remain open during this work but there may be short delays at the bridges. The track between the Routeburn Flats and the Routeburn

Falls huts will be upgraded, and the septic sewage system upgraded at the Routeburn Falls Hut. Upcoming work on the Ree-Dart Track includes relocating 1.6 km of track in the Dart Valley due to damage by flooding, building a new bridge across 25 Mile Creek in the Rees Valley, and upgrading the Chinamans Bluff carpark at the Dart roadend.

My partner, Kathy, and I were spending Queen’s Birthday Weekend at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell. I was there to visit Moturua Island. Kathy, on the other hand, was keen to check out Russell’s cultural attractions, like the museum, Pompallier House

participants will sail by yacht to Motuarohia and Moturua Islands. During my trip, I completed part of the Four Beach Foray by circumnavigating Moturua Island. At a local café, I met my guide for the day, Tim Grant, who was accompanied by his partner, Colette. You could describe Tim as a modern-day Davy Crocket — an ex DOC ranger, he sets traps for a living and knows the region like no one else — and having lived in the Bay for most of his life, he’s a great source of interesting facts about the region.

Leaving Long Beach During the Walking Weekend, participants will sail to Moturua Island by yacht. However, a yacht wasn’t available for us on this trip, so, instead, Tim organised a couple of his kayaks. From town we took a five-minute drive to Tim and Colette’s house at Long Beach where a couple of kayaks were waiting out the front — one single and one two-seater. As Colette and I were fairly inexperienced, the two of us took the two-seater, with Tim taking the single.

Waterfront Russell , Bay of Islands

Kayaking to Moturua Island With Colette controlling the rudder from the rear, we headed towards Moturua Island. Synchronising our paddle strokes was a bit tricky at first (if you’re not careful you can end up spinning in circles), but we soon got the hang of it and settled into a steady rhythm. With just the sound of our paddles dipping into the water, it was a neat sensation — almost hypnotic. There was hardly a ripple in the water and any thoughts of falling out and getting soaked were far from my mind. It took us about 50 minutes to reach Moturua Island and by then my tired arms were telling me it was time to step on land.

Moturua Island During the Walking Weekend, the Four Beach Foray will involve sailing to Motuarohia Island and visiting a Maori pa site; sailing on to Moturua Island to walk its perimeter and then sailing back to the mainland. It is described as medium difficulty and will take about seven hours. I found

My trip to Moturua Remnants of the past

There are 27 recorded archaeological sites on Moturua Island, including Maori pa, gardening sites and pits. At Homestead Bay, we saw the remains of a homestead dating back to early last century, which was home to a Maori family who farmed on the island. At Army Bay, we also saw the concrete remains of an army observation post, which was constructed during World War Two when a Japanese invasion was a real threat. A highlight for me was the picturesque view of Urupukapuka Island and Motukiekie Island, which we enjoyed from a vantage point above Army Bay.

the walk to be quite easy going. There were plenty of up-hill parts, but the tracks were very well maintained. One feature of this walk, and all the others, is that groups will be accompanied by a local guide. So, apart from enjoying the wonderful sites, participants will also get the opportunity to learn first-hand about the flora, fauna and history of the region.

As nature intended Moturua is part of Project Island Song, a conservation effort between the Department of Conservation, the Guardians of the Bay of Islands and the Ngati Kuta and Putukeha tribes to restore the island to its natural state. It is home to native birds, like Kiwi, Tui, and the vegetation consists largely of Manuka and Kanuka, which act as “nursery” trees by providing shelter to other species. At one point, Tim pointed out a Tomtit (a pretty black and white breasted bird) and explained, “If they’re here then the forest must be in good shape.”

After we had walked around Moturua Island, it was time to go home. To make things interesting, we paddled to nearby Motuarohia, entering a lagoon from the seaward side, jumped out of our kayaks and dragged them a short distance to the other side before continuing our journey. By the time we reached Long Beach (another 50 minutes later), I was definitely ready to hang up my paddle. We kayaked about 16 kilometres and my arms certainly felt it. My trip to Moturua Island was just part of the Four Beach Foray. It was a lot of fun and I particularly enjoyed a cold beer at the Duke of Marlborough that evening. Around The Clubs

Oldest NZ club has something for everyone hire for a small fee. The gear available includes items such as packs, boots, billies, stoves, tents, flies, bivvy bags, personal locator beacons and alpine equipment which is only available to club members skilled in its use. To help with transport on club trips, the club owns a comfortable, well maintained 12 seater Transit van. It has air conditioning, individual seatbelts, and enough room for packs. It is a very sociable way to get to the road end or wherever your trip is going. There is no better place to chill than on the mountain in winter whether you are skiing, boarding or just enjoying the snow. The club offers both snow craft courses and beginners ski courses. Beginner and advanced snow craft (alpine instruction) courses are offered in the winter. These range from an introduction to basic snow skills (ice axe and crampon use, safe travel in an alpine environment, and building snow shelters), through to technical ice climbing. Beginner ski courses are offered in winter. The club has many members highly experienced in the outdoors who willingly share their expertise with others. The club owns Manawatu Lodge which is near the Top of the Bruce Road on Mt Ruapehu. The lodge offers all the comforts of home including hot showers, great kitchen facilities and heat pumps to keep you warm when it is cold out. After spending the day skiing, tramping or just enjoying the mountain it’s a great location to watch the sun set over Mt Taranaki.

Manawatu Lodge not only provides fantastic accommodation during the ski season but all year round for walkers and club members just wanting time away from their usual busy lives. As well as tramping and skiing, club members can also take part in activities such as rock and snow climbing, caving, snow caving, mountain biking, geocaching, kayaking, Land Search and Rescue and of course the occasional social event. The club works in partnership with the Department of Conservation and looks after the Mangahao Flats Hut and Te Matawai Hut. Club nights are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Rose City Aquatic Centre Rooms, Park Road, Palmerston North and are a great way to meet other people

with interest in the outdoors. Meetings usually consist of an illustrated talk by a guest speaker or a club member. Dates for club nights are listed on the trip card with the topic for each club night being shown in the monthly newsletter and on the club website www.mtsc.org.nz No matter your age, your experience or your fitness level there is a walk for you. Nonmembers are very welcome to attend any club trip appropriate to their experience and fitness level. For further information and club contact details please see our website. hile touring Australia, co-presenting a course for health professionals about burnout in athletes, I have been bothered at night by my worst run ever of Restless Legs. The reason for the upsurge is obvious to me: Physical and mental exhaustion, combined with poor circulation. In addition to being on my feet most of the day in the front of a highly knowledgeable audience (stress!), I am also spending a good deal of time hanging around airports and then sitting cramped up for hours in aircraft (poor circulation), which means: Poor oxygenation of the legs and poor elimination of metabolic byproducts which can lead to cramp. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, or creepy-crawly sensations in the legs that often leads to sleep deprivation. It is a most unpleasant sensation that can literally drive the afflicted person crazy - or the person trying to sleep next to you while you squirm and wriggle away. A light-hearted description of the ailment is the "Wiggles". There is no denying that there are many people who suffer from leg pain and irritation while in bed; but this does not mean that the only therapy is to take a costly, powerful drug that come with a long list of nasty side effects. The Wiggles is usually experienced at night, when in bed, and most intense during the first few hours of turning in. It can affect both the very unfit and the very fit equally but may be exacerbated by fatigue. Here's what I think is going on: During sleep the body's central metabolism slows. What this means is the heart slows, the blood pressure drops, as does body temperature. The problem is that some muscles may still be right smack in the middle of working hard to replenish depleted nutrient stores and flush out metabolic toxins following a hard day. The muscles most likely to be afflicted are those of the lower legs because they tend to be most stressed during an exhausting day and, being furthest from the heart, are most likely to suffer the most from anything related to a reduction in circulation. Circulation in the limbs is also partially dependent on regular muscle contraction which squeezes dirty blood back to the heart, lungs and liver. When the muscles are relaxed and still, blood flow is dependent on good blood pressure and a strong pulse which decline during sleep. This explains why the Wiggles is experienced mostly during bed rest and most often after an exhausting day. To explain more about why it may be experienced more after a tiring day, be it a walk in the bush or long day in front of an audience: If there is already poor circulation in the legs, such as comes with ageing and/or if the person is exhausted from something like a long day on their feet, then there is a buildup of metabolic toxins and a reduction of oxygen in the tissues. This may build to a critical level, causing micro cramping in the muscles of the lower legs and the feet www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

during the early hours of sleep. This is felt as a crawling sensation in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to flex and extend the legs. This is most unpleasant and sleep is completely disturbed. That this unpleasant sensation is relieved by movement is a clue to its cause and to its relief. Rather than resort to medication, try these first: Avoid a hot bath before bed and sleep in a cool room and cool bed If you are hot and sweaty in bed, precious blood flow will be diverted to the skin away from the muscles. You may find a cold shower before bed may be beneficial. The vasoconstriction in the skin will divert blood to the deep muscles. If you get the Wiggles, get your legs dancing. Turn on your bedside radio and tune into some easy listening music. In rhythm to the music while still lying flat, gently flex and extend your ankles in time with the beat. At the end of the 3-5 minute track, get out of bed and walk the length of the house (just a minute or two), then get back into bed. Repeat another track of music, paddling with the feet, then go for another leisurely walk. Then paddle another track of music while lying in bed. By about this time, you should feel a relieving of the tightness and cramping in the legs. You might want to do another one or two slow tracks of music without getting up and walking..... Hopefully, you (and your very, very understanding partner) will nod off during one of these tracks and you will have a good night's sleep. Why it works Rhythmic flexing of the legs activates the muscle pump of the lower legs, by which the steady contracting and relaxing of of the calf muscles pumps the stagnant venous blood back to the heart, creating space in the legs and feet for their infusion with fresh, oxygenated arterial blood. Any discomfort should disappear entirely as you rhythmically cycle through the music tracks and the backlog of stagnant blood is finally flushed out. This method gets to the heart of the cause - metabolic stress in the legs. Other valuable measures include: * Reviewing medication such as antidepressants, cholesterol and blood pressure pills which may be direct or indirect causes of the Wiggles. * Ensuring that the diet is rich in nutrients and antioxidants which assist circulation, muscle relaxation and protect against oxidative stress. * Avoid tea, coffee, chocolate, red wine and spicy foods from late afternoon to evening. * Moderate your exercise and try to get off your feet towards the end of the day. It is better to exercise vigorously early in the day and restrict evening exercise to activities like Yoga. * Go for a walk in the cool of the evening and do some yoga-style stretching before bed and try a cold shower. I know, I know! The problem with these brilliant solutions, if you are like me, is once in bed total apathy takes over. Rather than do anything beneficial, you will just lie there and wiggle in agony and drive your partner nuts! That's me to a "T"! If you try this method for managing the Wiggles, please tell us how you get on by writing a letter to the Editor. Walking WalkingNew NewZealand, Zealand, issue issueno no187 187--2013 2013

flat shoreline walking track winds its way around Napier’s famous Ahuriri Estuary, and just a few drive minutes from Napier’s CBD. Along the trail, information boards provide information about the history of the area, its flora and fauna and the dynamics of the habitat. This long, narrow estuary with its wide range of fresh to salty, shallow to deep, and sandy to muddy habitats supports an extremely diverse range of birds, fish, invertebrates and plant life. This important wetland is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wading birds including Grey Herons, Royal Spoonbills and Pied Stilts. Shags, Kingfishers and even Gannets may also be spotted diving for fish in this area. Over 70 species of resident and migratory waterbirds use the long narrow estuary as a feeding and resting area. A good place to start the walk is from the car park at the end of Humber Street. From there follow the track from the information signboard down the slope and across the creek. At low tide, small crabs cautiously emerge from their holes in the exposed mud banks. The formed track crosses an open area of grassland and winds through stands of www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Eucalypt trees planted to screen industrial buildings on the boundary of the Estuary Reserve. Bridging a tidal drain, the route takes you up an embankment that marks the furthest extent of several land reclamations undertaken by the Hawke’s Bay Harbour Board between 1931 and 1989. The Embankment was built to provide a route across the estuary for the East Coast Main Trunk Railway. The bridge was recently used by freight trains on the NapierGisborne trunk line, replaced a rickety wooden bridge that connected West Quay to Meeanee. Construction started on this project in 1914 with a “toe” of rocks laid down on each side of the tidal inlet. A steam-powered dredge scooped up shingle and clay from the estuary to build up the Embankment. The concrete bowstring girder bridge was built in 1917 and completed in 1922. The road declined in importance once the Pandora Road Bridge, east of the Embankment Bridge, opened in 1922. It closed to vehicle traffic in 1989. The Embankment Bridge affords walkers good views of the estuary, including the main outfall channel to your left and the Westshore Wildlife Reserve, a significant habitat for water-loving birds. Up until the 1931 earthquake all the area to the west of the bridge, back to the foot of the Poraiti hills, was a vast tidal inlet encompassing thousands of hectares of www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

ne of our favourite walks is Roydon Downs, 6km’s past Paengaroa and 45 minutes from Tauranga. It’s very easy to get to - only a 10 minutes drive down Allport Road, off SH 33. Owned by the Brann Family, this hill country far m has been extensively planted with beautiful trees, and developed for recreational activities for over 40 years. A network of well marked tracks lead around the property, over open paddocks, up the hill for views, along beside the stream, through native bush, over bridges and past a water wheel. It’s a very beautiful place to Opposite page and below: A Views of the Oeuteheuheu Stream from the track.

walk, especially in Autumn, when the trees are glorious shades of red and gold. Friendly chickens followed us along and an enormous pig eyed us as we wandered past. For a family fun day out, there is a rope swing over a ■ water hole, a water slide, tubes to use to float downstream, and barbecue areas to cook a picnic lunch. There are little 4- bunk cabins to stay in, and a lovely new ’Woolshed’ has been built, providing very cheap, very nice accommodation. If you do choose to stay, there are glow worms to visit at night. This is a truly beautiful place to visit - for an hour’s walk, a day’s exploration, or a weekend away. T

he Larapinta Trail, in the heart of Central Australia, is an extended bushwalking track running west from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder (Rwetyepme), along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges. It was completed in 2002, and its 223 kilometres are fast gaining a reputation for offering one of the finest walking experiences in the world. The steep red slopes of the West MacDonnell Ranges rise ■dramatically from the Central Australian desert. They typify the rugged landscapes of the Red Centre with the changing hues of their mountain peaks, rolling hills and dry river valleys made famous in the paintings of Albert Namatjira. The Larapinta Trail provides an unequalled opportunity to experience this living desert landscape and take in its special wild and remote places. It crosses a variety of terrain, from high ridgelines to sheltered gorges and is home to many of the arid zone’s rare plants. It also links the well known visitor attractions along the ranges where walkers can join or leave the Trail. Trek Larapinta is a small, local business that specialises in the Larapinta Trail. Established in 1998 Trek Larapinta has pioneered small group trekking tours on the Larapinta Trail. They think small is beautiful. Being small, they can focus on quality and sustainability. Being local, they maintain strong knowledge of the landscape and build deep connections with the community. They guide walking tours for small groups and organise transfers for independent walkers, support Indigenous enterprises and practice environmentally responsible travel. They do this in the places they know and love: the Larapinta Trail and Central Australia. These are special places for them. Bookings for our 2013 and 2014 season are now open (www.treklarapinta.com.au), please email us – info@treklarapinta.com.au or call us to find out more +61 1300 133 278. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

New Zealand Walk

Lake Hayes Track popular with locals

J

ust fifteen minutes drive from Queenstown and nine minutes from Arrowtown is the beautiful Lake Hayes which is popular with walkers and cyclists. The single track makes it possible to walk a circuit of Lake Hayes that has been an eternal favourite of locals and visitors. The track is either well-graded, or a wooden walkway, to create an easy stroll around the lake, famous for its stunning reflections. Native birds to be seen along the way include the Deep Blue Pukeko, also known as the New Zealand Swamp Hen! There are some inclines, but they're pretty short, and mostly the track's easy. There are toilet facilities at the recreation and picnic area at the Arrowtown end of the lake, which is also a great spot to pause for a dip in the lake. The path has some steep drop offs at some points, so keep small children close to you. One can stroll, walk, run or cycle around a lake surrounded by spectacular mountains;,

where you may see some Australasian Crested Grebe. The track is probably best in early morning or later in the afternoon if you are a cyclist, because of it's popularity with walkers particularly in the weekends. Despite it's brown colour (due increased algae bloom in recent years) Lake Hayes is perfectly safe for swimming and is a very popular swimming spot with locals during the summer months when it is significantly warmer than the other lakes in the region. On calm days the Lake generates wonderful reflections of the Remarkable Ranges and in autumn when the leaves are changing colour their is an extremely romantic feeling. Getting there Lake Hayes is 14km from Queenstown or 5km from Arrowtown. As you drive from Frankton, you'll see a carpark at the end of the Ladies Mile Road, as you descend towards Lake Hayes, or continue to the pavilion where there' s lots of parking. You can enter the circuit track at Lake Hayes Pavilion and show grounds on SH 6; Bendemeer Bay; North Lake Hayes picnic area; Arrowtown Road and Rutherford Road (off Speargrass Flat Road).

ermany may be mainly known as a country of culture, art, and cars, but once you are there you quickly realize that there is an immense diversity of natural treasures to be explored. Walkers really are spoiled for choice, with every region boasting its own unique characteristics and customs. From the classic alpine scenery and sweeping panoramas of the Allgäu Alps to the fairytale castles of the romantic Rhine Valley, from curiously steep vineyards in the Mosel Valley to the magnificence of the Bavarian Alps and the hidden delights of Saxon Switzerland - Germany is a great and varied destination for a walking holiday. What all these regions have in common is how well walkers are catered for, with an excellent range of hiking trails to suit every fitness and ability level, scrumptious regional specialties to sample along the way, and some wonderfully authentic accommodation options. However, there is such an abundance of walking options - a network of well-marked trails cover around 200,000 kilometres in total - that organizing a walking holiday in Germany is actually not an easy task. Tour Operators like Sidetracks Germany Tours (www.sidetracks-germany.co.nz) make life easier by putting together well-balanced itineraries that include walks specifically selected for their beautiful sights and eventful routes. n the north-western coast of Aotea (Great Barrier Island) a part of the rugged coastline looks out towards the high fortress cliffs of Rakitu Island. Years ago, a bridle track was cut, skirting the cliffs as a land access to Okiwi and Port Fitzroy. Attempts at farming the land resulted in the destruction of all the forest, mainly by fire. In the 1940s, the route for a motor road was made over an inland saddle past the rocky pinnacles, the remnants of the Great Barrier volcanoes. The old track was abandoned, and obscured by tall regenerating Kanuka until it was cleared quite recently. Today the reincarnated track forms a five hour, reasonably level and easy walk along a contour between 40 and 100 metres above sea level. Once you leave the well-provided campsite at Harataonga Bay, the trail lies in

splendid isolation. Our friends left us at Harataonga, and parked their vehicle by the road at the other end of the track, meeting us for lunch on a cliff top above Komahunga Bay. Here, we took their keys and eventually met them back at Harataonga. The scene at Harataonga Bay must have been very different in 2007 when, for 12 weeks, 13 “castaways” took part in a TV reality show. Rather than British television crews with all their gear, we found just a couple of camper vans. A loop track has been made to lead us up a steep route to a pa site overlooking the bay. Several huge old Pohutukawa extend their branches over the mounds and trenches of the ancient fort and frame today’s peaceful scene. Spared by the forest clearing, and by the predation of possums that were never liberated on the island, these trees are a special part of all the Great Barrier coastline. We then link back to the old benched track, working our Tipi and Bobs Waterfront Lodge situated on the waters edge of Tryphena. Self contained and serviced waterfront accommodation. Six Units sleep 2-4pax, Cottage sleeps 2-7pax. Licensed Restaurant and Bar catering for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinners. We can arrange your travel package. way over the long fingers of volcanic flows that protrude into the sea below us. Behind the interspersed bays, we follow inland to cross small streams that flow down to the white curve of beaches. Some of the bays are private land, but the owners leave it all in a wild state. Between the bays, the track traverses precipitous cliffs with expansive ■ views. Skirting around the hill above Omahungaiti Bay, we reach a viewpoint above the large sandy tidal estuary of Whangapoua Bay. Beyond are the densely forested hills to the north of the island. It’s not far now to the end of the track. Aotea boasts many fine walks; now we are looking up at the volcanic formations around Hirakimata (Mt Hobson). The spectacular Windy Canyon route to the summit passes through here. It’s another example of the special walking opportunities offered on Aotea. Last April, the first Great Barrier Walking Festival took place. It’s a perfect place for such events.

Fact file •Aotea is reached year round by ferry (4½ hours, or faster in the summer holidays) or light plane (35 minutes) from Auckland. •There is a wide variety of accommodation, and rental cars are available. •The island is 30 km long. Cook named it Great Barrier as he sailed north in to the Hauraki Gulf from the exposed Pacific coast. •Volcanic activity ceased here about 5 million years ago, but the hot springs in a natural stream are a treat. •The whaling and Kauri timber industries have gone, leaving the island to a special breed who like the isolation, and living independently of many modern conveniences. •Without possums and stoats, and cleared of goats, birdlife abounds. Kereru are common and Kaka are heard often.

Cadbury Dunedin Marathon now in its 34 year

T

he 34 th staging of the Cadbury Dunedin Marathon plus Half Marathon Run and Walk will be held on Sunday September 8th 2013 again organised by the Caversham Harrier and Athletic Club. The event was established in 1979 originally organised by the Dunedin Federation of Sports Medicine. There have been many changes made to the format of the marathon over the years all designed to make the event more accessible and enjoyable for the ever increasing numbers of competitors. The marathon organising committee of the Caversham Harrier and Athletic Club were honoured to be presented with the 2012 Innovation In Sport Award at the Annual Otago Sports Awards for their work in marketing and growing the marathon on taking over the organisation in 1985. Last year marked the 25th year of major event sponsorship from Cadbury Ltd making it one of the longest running corporate partnerships of its type in New Zealand.

This year for the second time race headquarters will be based at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Anzac Avenue. The start of the Half Marathon Run and Walk will be in the Stadium Car Park with the newly designed course meaning competitors will be able to take in many of the city’s sights. The further extension of the harbourside walkway- cycleway will mean competitors will be able to enjoy more time away from the confines of State Highway 88. This will also provide additional viewing for those travelling on the supporters train from Dunedin to Port Chalmers. The associated Children’s Challenge will be held for the second time this year starting on Logan Park and finishing inside the Forsyth Barr Stadium. Low rainfall in Northland but wet along the Kaikoura Coast and in north Canterbury. More frequent anticyclones in the Tasman Sea bring sunny conditions, and low rainfall in eastern Northland and Gisborne. In contrast, rain may be well above average along the Kaikoura Coast and north Canterbury due to a two day rainfall event. These patterns extend onto Northland and with more frequent westerlies over the rest of NI and southwesterlies prevailing over SI. Apart from the first week in this four week period, most depressions may pass well to the south. Rain may be low for the time of year in most of Northland and Gisborne. Whangarei is dry, also Kaikohe, Wanganui, Manawatu, south Canterbury and coastal areas of Otago. But rain may be above average between Kaikoura and Christchurch. Average sunshine in most places however it may be sunny in the southern lakes and central Otago, Gisborne, Buller, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and coastal Otago. Temperatures below average in the southwest of SI, central NI, Fiordland, Westland, much of Otago, inland south Canterbury and all central NI regions between Masterton and Hamilton. 11th -16th August 2013 Unsettled in the north and east as a depression crosses the NI. Meanwhile an anticyclone brings cold southeasterlies to the south and east of the SI. 13th August 2013 Waikato River rises. Snow closes Desert Road. 14th -15th August 2013 High rainfall for parts of Canterbury including Kaikoura, Waipara North and Cheviot. 15th August 2013 No substantial rainfall may occur in Canterbury over the next four weeks. 17th -25th August 2013 Anticyclonic at first, then northerlies. 18th August 2013 Heavy rain NI. 19th August 2013 NI rivers rise. New snow Mt Ruapehu. 20thAugust 2013 Change to southwesterlies. 26th -31st August 2013 An anticyclone may be followed by strong westerlies from the 27th. 28th August 2013 Gale force winds may affect many SI areas, especially rural Canterbury, south and west of Christchurch. The same weather system may bring high rainfall with surface flooding to Wanaka, Hawea and Cromwell, with Milford Road possibly closed due to avalanche risk. Strong winds also NI. Allow 24-hr error to all forecasts. Skewing may occur around 3rd (apogee) , 7th(new moon), 19th (perigee), 21st (full moon) and 31st (apogee)
