New 24/7 bike hire station debuts in Port Stephens

Visitors to Port Stephens in Australia and even lucky locals who live by the blue waters and white beaches of the ‘Port’ can now explore the region on their own by bike, with the opening of the area’s first 24/7 automatic bike hire station. The hi-tech, self-service bike hire base has been installed at the d’Albora Marina in Nelson Bay – the launch point for Port Stephens’ famous dolphin and whale cruises. Stocked with eight quality bikes but with more on the way soon, including children’s bikes, the standalone station is the sixth in NSW to be established by Boomerang Bikes since it was formed by NSW Central Coast entrepreneur and avid cyclist, Rod Lennon. “This is the first bike hire service of this kind in Port Stephens which is a pristine region ideal for sightseeing on a bike,” said Mr Lennon. “Cycling is a healthy, active, affordable and very personal way to see a region and now visitors and even locals who haven’t been on a bike for years can hire one any time of the day or night,” he said. To use the bike hire station, which is secured and monitored by a remote system, customers simply insert a credit card, select the bike and hire period and release the bike from the locks. A central computer server tracks each bicycle hire through wireless, radio frequency identification technology. Customers return the bikes to the same station. Bike hire costs A$14 per hour, A$28 for up to four hours and A$47 for 24 hours. Free helmets and bike locks are available for bike hire customers from The Marina Ice Creamery and also Café on the Bay in the adjacent marina restaurant and shopping complex. Each bike also comes with a local map. Bikes are also available with child seats. Rebeca Morley from Destination Port Stephens said the new bike hire service added an exciting new way to discover the natural beauty of Port Stephens. “Visitors can now hire a bike at a time that suits them and use our waterside trails to visit Port Stephens’ many bush-framed beaches and enjoy the fresh sea air,” Ms Morley said. ‘Cycling is becoming a very popular form of sightseeing so we welcome the debut of this bike station and look forward to seeing many visitors pedalling around Port Stephens.”

Great outdoors a favourite place to take a photo Over 1,600 New Zealand adults were recently surveyed by Fujifilm NZ to find out their favourite places and things to photograph over the summer holidays and beyond. Nearly two out of five (38%) said the great New Zealand outdoors was their top location for the perfect holiday photo – i.e. at the beach (16%), on the water (3%), on a road trip (8%), at the bach or camping (5%), or in the bush (6%) Looking past the holidays, although family and friends (89%) are the most popular subjects for photographs, the great outdoors (61%), travel and holidays (59%) and wildlife (46%) are the next most popular.

Two United Kingdom walking festivals

The Bishop’s Castle Walking Festival takes place in the Shropshire Hills between 7- 15 May 2016. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is recognised as one of Britain’s finest landscapes. The seventeenth Festival offers nine days of guided walks - and some tough unguided challenge walking. With the Shropshire Way, Offa’s Dyke and the Kerry Ridgeway all at hand, there’s a lot of choice from wide, open hilltops to narrow, winding valleys, and fantastic views. Bishop’s Castle is a friendly and welcoming market town with two breweries, six pubs, interesting independent shops and a well-established programme of festivals, music and arts. The programme for the 6-12 May 2016 Newton Stewart Walking Festival is now ready. As usual there is a good mix of walks, some old and familiar, some new and different. People have requested more short walks and so there is a new easy and lovely coastal walk from Stairhaven to Auchenmalg where the views are spectacular across to the Mull of Galloway and, on a clear day, the Isle of Man and Ireland. There is also a pleasant flat walk on tracks and paths around Castle Douglas where there is lots of history and wildlife. Full details will be on the website by the end of January when booking starts.

Exercise can help to reduce lower back pain

New research shows that exercise to improve skill and coordination can help reduce lower back pain A new Cochrane Review published recently shows that targeting exercises to muscles that support and control the spine offers another strategy to reduce pain and disability caused by lower back pain. Lower back pain is one of the most common health conditions worldwide. It can have substantial health and economic costs as people experience disability and general ill health, leading them to need time off work. Motor control exercise is a popular form of exercise that aims to improve coordination of the muscles that control and support the spine. Patients are initially guided by a therapist to practise normal use of the muscles with simple tasks. As the patient’s skill increases the exercises become more complex and include the functional tasks that the person needs to perform during work and/or leisure activities. The new study, published today in the Cochrane Library, gathered together data from 29 randomized trials involving a total of 2,431 men and women, aged between 22 and 55 years old. The trials investigated the impact of using motor control exercises as a treatment for lower back pain compared with other forms of exercise or doing nothing. The Cochrane authors found that people who used motor control exercises experienced improvements, especially in pain and disability compared with minimal intervention. When compared with other types of exercise at intervals between 3 and 12 months motor control exercise provided similar results for pain and disability. Lead author, Physiotherapist Bruno Saragiotto, from The George Institute, University of Sydney, Australia, said, “Targeting the strength and coordination of muscles that support the spine through motor control exercise offers an alternative approach to treating lower back pain. We can be confident that they are as effective as other types of exercise, so the choice of exercise should take into account factors such as patient or therapist.

Footbridge damaged by boat

A section of the Te Araroa Trail, which spans the length of the country, has been closed indefinitely. Whangarei District Council parks technical officer Stuart Jackson said one of the piles of a footbridge at Whananaki had been hit and damaged by a boat. The footbridge links north and south Whananaki, and is part of the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, which stretches from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Mr Jackson said there w e re p o s s i b l e b u t unpopular options for those on the trail. "The options for walkers are either to walk around, and it would probably be a 5 or 6km detour, or wade - but you would have to wait until low tide and wade up to one's chest level." Mr Jackson said the bridge was at its busiest with holidaymakers and walkers at this time of year. Above photo shows the boardwalk. Photo AFP www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Walking the length of NZ

for Nepal

A

British couple who were caught up in the devastating earthquake in Nepal last April are setting off to walk the length of New Zealand to help raise money for the Himalayan Trust’s Nepal Earthquake Rebuild. Carl Hutchinson and Adele-Ivy Harris, who have been living and working in Auckland since leaving Nepal, will begin their journey in Bluff on January 22 and expect it will take them 5-6 months to walk the full 3000km trail, ending in Cape Reinga. They hope to raise $10,000 from family, friends and the kiwi supporters they meet along their journey. The couple were travelling in Nepal when the 7.8 magnitude quake struck in April 2015, killing almost 8,900 people and causing widespread devastation. “Although we did some volunteering after the quake it didn’t feel like enough and leaving Nepal was difficult knowing that so many families were still in need of urgent help. “It was then we decided to trek the entire length of New Zealand on the Te Araroa Trail to raise money for Himalayan Trust,” says Adele. Immediately following the earthquakes, the Himalayan Trust provided emergency shelter to affected communities: distributing tents, tarpaulins and other essential items, funding the construction of 25 emergency houses for families who had lost everything and providing temporary

classrooms in 30 schools. Himalayan Trust General Manager Prue Smith said the Trust will be rebuilding classrooms, teacher’s quarters, student hostels and toilet blocks in at least 30 schools in the Everest region where it works. “We are estimating it may take five years to repair and rebuild all the damaged buildings in the isolated Everest region where we work, particularly as we want to make sure the new classrooms meet seismicresilient building codes to better ensure the safety of children and teachers in case of a

similar disaster,” says Ms Smith. “The money raised by Carl and Adele will be an enormous help to our ongoing rebuild work.” For more information, or to support Carl and Adele, please visit their Givealittle fundraising page: https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/ walk4nepal/ The Himalayan Trust was founded in 1960 by Sir Edmund Hillary and ever since then has been working alongside communities and partner organisations in Nepal to help the people of the Everest region with health, education and general wellbeing.

eeding to escape the ’rat race’ for a few days, we headed to Tongariro National Park. We had walked on the western side of Ruapehu many times, so we chose to explore the mountain track from Tukino to Maungaehuehu. Leaving the car at Tukino Access Road, it only took half an hour to walk up to the ‘Round the Mt’ track, where a poled route

It seemed so incongruous in such hot weather - reminding us of how quickly the weather can change in the mountains. We continued along over stones and scree, shining gold in the sun, past alpine gardens and on to Rangipo Hut in a couple of hours. The rest of the afternoon was spent chatting to others from all over New Zealand who had the same idea. The following day we left early to beat the heat. There was very little wind and we reached Waihianoa Gorge in about an hour. Again the views were magnificent! Rock sculptures, and jumbles of boulders as far as you could see. It seemed as though a landscape gardener had been here. Little www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

We slipped and slid down the steep side of the gorge, to a long swing bridge over the Waihianoa River, then slowly made our way up the other side on a gradual zig zag trail. no mud at all. We reached Maungaehuehu hut about 2.30pm, a perfect time for a dip in the pools close by. That night, an enormous moon lit the hut - no need for torches. The following day was another early start because the forecast was for a hot day with little wind. Although it was a return walk, it seemed totally different. The forest track was cooler and greener, and the alpine gardens not too hot yet. But yesterdays climb up from the Waihianoa Gorge was more difficult to scramble down. We slipped and slithered all the way to the swing bridge.

We reached the top of the gorge by mid day and it was an easy wander back to Rangipo by early afternoon. It was a lovely peaceful place to be beautiful clear views, warm and sunny, a light breeze, and good company. The following morning we walked back to the car, and by the time we reached Taupo, we were making plans for the next trip to the mountain. It was truly beautiful.

Coastal walk to pa site coastal walk around the peninsula which is the site where a famous siege took place in the 1770’s. The siege was between two Maori Chiefs Te Wera of Huriawa and Taoka who was based near Taiaroa Head. Te Wera was protected at the Pa for the six months of the siege because of the very high cliffs and the narrow connection to the land in Karitane. On your walk around the Peninsula there are very good display boards explaining what went on. The boards describe a Whaling Station and Tavern which was located here in the 1830’s. Now for the walk – Drive through Karitane to where the road turns away from the river and take the next road left towards the beach. Go up the hill to the Gateway to the Pa site. There is a small carpark. Go through the gate and start to the right up a rise. There are lovely views from

here of the site. Walk along the coast and you will see rock stacks at the shore and two natural arches which become blowholes when the tide comes in. After exploring for a while you cross to the other side. A walk up a steepish slope from here gives great views of the cliffs at the tip. On the track back you get lovely views of the river joining the ocean and this leads you back over and out the Gateway again. We stayed at Waikouaiti and found very many interesting things to visit. Matanaka Historic Farm Buildings, Hawksbury Lagoon, Shag Point, Trotters Gorge, Katiki Point and the Moeraki Boulders and the list could go on. If you have allowed yourself time to look about it is much more rewarding than roaring down SH1 and saying next time we will stop because one often never does. Above: Entrance gateway to the pa. Green Prescription has given Janice Howard lifestyle changes

In the following story, Janice Howard shares her experience with the Green Prescription.

I got a Green Prescription (GRx) referral from my GP as at the time I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, my weight had increased and I was under a lot of stress. Having a Green Prescription was the best thing that had happen ed to me as it kick started me to get motivated and get moving. I wasn’t doing much in the way of exercise before then only a 15 minute walk to work three days a week and an occasional bike ride or stroll on the beach in the weekends. At the start I attended a ‘water works’ class one day a week and then the Kickstart aqua class once a week. I later replaced that class with the Kickstart gym class followed by brief, but extremely informative, talks on eating healthy, cholesterol, serving sizes, etc. These were held every Tuesday night at the Richmond Aquatic centre. Angela was my main GRx support person and with her ongoing calls of support of motivation on physical activity she pushed me to be active at least 30 minutes a day. I did this by breaking the time down to two lots of 15 minutes each and it also really made me aware that I needed to raise my heart rate. By planning regular exercise into my busy work schedule such as walking/jogging before work and doing an aqua fit class while away from home with Paula, my work colleague, we were able to motivate each other. I have also had support from Miraka another work colleague who walked with me some days after work for 30–75 minutes at my pace and encouraged me to do some community walks. I have now completed a 10 and a five kilometre community walk and have joined a gym which I attend three to four times a week. I push myself by trying different classes such as Pump,

Body attack, Combat and Body balance. My next event is the 10 km Mahana walk in November with four workmates. Angela, Marc and the GRx team offered lots of support and tips and as time went on my life changed. I am feeling great, healthier and I am no longer pre-diabetic. I have lost weight and now find I can fit in clothes I haven’t been able to wear for a while. I also feel motivated in myself to try some things that I have always wanted to do. here are many loop walks from the base of the Port Hills, in Christchurch and this one links you into many. The shortest is an hour’s return walk through suburbia, and the longest half a day through Bowenvale Regional Park, and other farm parks. We took one and a half to two hours to traverse Bowenvale Regional Park on the Huntsbury Track, returning on the Mt Vernon Farm Track. There is no shade – the only trees are a restoration planting in a gully - so you will need good shoes and on a hot day, hat, sunglasses, water. On return, Fava café is a popular coffee shop opposite the Mobil station on Centaurus Road.

Start on the walkway near St Martins School in Albert Terrace, and ascend to Aotea Avenue on numerous shallow but wide steps. At the end of Aotea Avenue, turn left onto Huntsbury Avenue. For a suburban experience, you can return at this point by turning right onto Major Aitken Drive, and right again onto Centaurus Road. Otherwise, just keep walking up to the end Huntsbury Avenue. Past Major Aitken Drive, the footpath on Huntsbury Avenue disappears, so be careful of cars as the road has a few blind corners. Alternatively, park near or at the end of Huntsbury Avenue, and walk to Victoria Park or Mt Vernon from here.

Vernon Farm

Bowenvale Regional Park is a farm, so to enter you must climb a fence (there are stone steps), and keep a look out for the odd cyclist or 4WD vehicle on the gravelled Huntsbury Track. We saw a pipit, heard skylarks, saw a skink, a native copper butterfly, and heard sheep, but this is not a walk for the wildlife or plants. The views back to the city are spectacular. It is a monotonous grind up the track to the Port Hills Road, but the views into Lyttleton Harbour are equally worth the effort. On the Port Hills Road, beware of numerous mountain bikes and road bikes and occasional cars. There are no footpaths, so walk on the grass on the road edge. From the top, there are several ways to continue – via Victoria Park, the Rapaki Track, to the top of Mt Vernon (not much further, but you may compete with mountain bikes) and others. We descended the Mount Vernon Farm Track, straight down

www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

the ridge, with views all the way. There was one gate to enter on the left before the stock yards, and one fence to easily climb half way down. Near the end, the Farm Track divides into two. Continuing straight along the ridge ends in a steep descent amongst rocks that is unsuitable for bikes, to the Mt Vernon Carpark on Hillsborough Terrace. In rain this is treacherous. Head left for a gradual descent. There is another track off the left that heads steeply into the gully (and is hard to see) that descends to Albert Terrace past some wind thrown pines. We continued on the main track, which can get boggy and sticky with mud after rain, and ends at a farm gate at top end of Hillsborough Terrace. There is no footpath, but not for long. We walked down Hillsborough Terrace then over a little bridge at the end of Charlene Place (two side streets down). This links to Leonard Place, then there is one right turn to get back onto Albert Terrace. We have walked this route in reverse, but the climb up Rapaki Track or the Farm Track is steep, with no rewarding views. The St Martins School stairs onto Huntsbury Ave is far the best way to start.

Above left: Start near St Martins School on St Albert Terrace and ascend the walkway. Above right: The footpath on Huntsbury Avenue disappears, so take care walking on the road. Above right middle; Parking at the start of the Huntsbury Track. Below left: Climb the stone steps, and watch out for cyclists and the occasional 4WD. New Zealand Guided Walk

Whirinaki Walk opens up a new world

T

22 Walking New Zealand, issue no 218 - 2016

hat the walk in Whirinaki — the finest of our podocarp forests — would be different was obvious before we started, when we paused at a hillside with red carved heads held high on poles. These carvings represent the kaitiaki (guardians) of Whirinaki. They are the ancestors of the local people, many of whom still live on the forest fringes or in the By Judith Doyle region. The posts symbolise the umbilical cords that attach the people to the land. Eight of us, on a sunny November day, are sampling a one-day “Rainforest Experience NZ”. We meet its director, Chris Birt, at the edge of the 60,000ha Whirinaki forest, just south of Murupara, central North Island. Rainforest Experience grew out of the Whirinaki walks Chris established in 1994. People would come, he thought, solely to see these awe-inspiring podocarp giants. He has found though that visitors prefer to meet the local people and hear about the medicines, food, traditions associated with the giant trees. They can share knowledge that has been handed down by their ancestors who were forest-dwellers. We meet our main guide Himi who has lived hereabouts all his life. After making our packed lunches from an array of salads/dips/meats/rolls, we head off on the Whirinaki Loop Walk. This follows the eastern bank of the Whirinaki River upstream to the waterfall and then back down the western side. Himi describes the five great podocarps — rimu, totara, matai, miro and kahikatea. He reminds us that it was here, 30 years ago, that protestors climbed trees and tied themselves to trees to stop the massive www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

podocarps from being felled. Backed by David Bellamy (known as Botanic Man from his 1970/80s TV programmes) the conservationists finally won this battle. Podocarps are distinguished from the pines by not having a female cone but a bright berry that is attractive to birds, Himi tells us. The kahikatea is the tallest New Zealand tree, up to 70 metres. In the older kahikateas, he says, food was often stored in their hollow trunks “like a refrigerator”. We look at the totara, the tree that is hollowed out by Maori for waka. It’s the only tree you could ringbark and it can still survive, says Himi.. He reminds us of the expression “a great totara has fallen” used when a famous leader dies. We marvel at a mighty rata tree which Himi tells us starts life when a seed is dropped into the top of a tree and a shoot is then sent down to the ground for nutrients needed. Even more intriguing is Himi’s information that the pattern that is revealed when rimu bark peels back is thought to have been the inspiration for tattooing. Also with us is guide Naphtali who has just joined the Rainforest Experience team. She describes how she was brought up by her grandmother and after she died Naphtali had her grandmother’s moko chiselled into her own chin (a three and a half hour process). She wears her moko proudly. We hear more snippets of tree medicine from Himi: tarata leaves are good for sinus trouble — you put the leaves in a basin, pour boiling water over them and breathe in the steam; the leaves of the kawakawa can be used to heal cuts or wounds and can be chewed to relieve toothache. (Next day we meet Aroha who makes a lotion from kawakawa www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

leaves — good for skin ailments). Himi has a few cooking hints too as we walk along. Horopito gives flavour to pork, lamb or duck; we sample some tips of pikopiko or bush asparagus that he picks for us. The bush on one side of our track is dense, the canopy allowing only occasional shafts of sunshine through. On the other side the foliage is more open, giving frequent glimpses of the river. Close up the water is so clear that you can see the outline underwater of every rock and sunken log. We’re thrilled to see the rare whio — blue duck — standing on a log by the river. These big thickset birds are threatened by predators and are the subject of a recovery plan by the Department of Conservation. The track we’re on is reasonably flat though there is a long uphill stretch leading to the waterfall which is slightly more than halfway point on the walk. We sit in the sun on a mossy bank for lunch, the sound of the waterfall a blissful background. I view the waterfall — some eight metres high — more closely from the bridge that spans the river as we set off on the return walk. The track is rougher in patches on this side. It goes high for a while and we gaze down on the panorama of water and bush that’s every shade of green. I ask Himi if he gets any guiding work in the winter — this dense bush is rainfor-

est, after all, and although the walks operate year round, they are most inviting in spring, summer and autumn. He tells me he does possum-hunting over winter and has also become interested in doing tattooing. He is barefeet for the last hour or so of the walk. They breed them tough round here. I wish my muscles were a bit tougher, actually, as they start complaining that I’ve walked long enough and they need a rest. The walk is nine and a half kilometers, officially, but a few detours can add to that. We’ve been about five hours on the walk. But the bush and the frequent sound of water has combined to work its magic and, though tired, I feel serene and happily satisfied with the day. When I climb slightly off track towards another waterfall, I feel positively elated. The water falls in a frothy stairway down the rocks, bordered by ferns either side. Sight and sound enchants. It’s an image I’ll savour for a long time. For more info: www.rainforestexperiencesnz.com, www.maoritourism.co.nz, www.GreatLakeTaupo.com.

Australian Walks

See Victoria on two feet There is no better way to experience Victoria’s natural assets than on two feet. Luckily, the myriad trails and tracks allow walkers to access some of the state’s most picturesque locations. Here are some top choices:

Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk is the State’s premier multi-day bushwalking experience. This 100 kilometre-long iconic walk stretches along the state’s south-western coastline from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. The trail can be broken into short works or day hikes, or experienced in its entirety over eight-days and seven-nights. Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk is a three-night, four-day guided experience along the western half of the Great Ocean Walk. Finishing with a helicopter ride over the Twelve Apostles, the experience includes transfers to and from Melbourne CBD, ecolodge accommodation, gourmet meals, snacks and walking gear.

Grampians Peaks Trail

Currently under development, the Grampians Peaks Trail will be a 13 day, 12 night 144 kilometre (one-way) walk through the Grampians. It can be enjoyed in its entirety or experienced in small sections at a time. The trail is rich in Aboriginal culture and will provide an insight into the lives of the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people. Hikers can choose to carry their own equipment and food or request for tents, sleeping bags and supplies to be provided at the camp site, enabling them to walk with a day-pack only. The first section of the trail has just opened, and is a one-way three day, two night loop walk from Halls Gap to Borough Huts Left: A family on the steps on the Surf Coast Walk.

t’s hard to believe that so many walks can exist within a few kilometres of Riverton, this coastal Southland town and the Sport Southland Active Walkers KiwiSeniors really look forward to traversing these. The central business area and the main residential and holiday cribs area are joined by crossing the Jacobs River estuary bridge. A 3km road climb leads you to the entrance of Mores Reserve and four different walking routes. A short, flat gravel track with a great view of Riverton and beyond takes about 30 minutes return. The second walk takes you up a slightly steeper gravel track to a lookout on Howells Hill with outstanding panoramic views of the often rugged Foveaux strait and magnificent Stewart Island – this walk takes about 30 minutes return.

The third walk is towards the west with a gradual incline leading to another view of the spectacular strait and the peaks of Mt Anglem and Mt Allen on Stewart Island. These three walks are surrounded by native bush, including totara and southern rata. Song chorus from the birdlife is really entertaining. Pest control in recent years has certainly made a difference. This walk includes wahi tapu, or a sacred place for Maori, so please respect this when walking this area. The fourth of the walks involves a gradual climb up and over Howells Hill and down to the sea, with views of the western coast line. Unusual rock features are visible, including some fascinating hanging rock. This track can be a little slippery underfoot, but the stunning sea views and windscapes are incredible. young foliage, yet the trees remain stoic and continue to offer shelter. The return trip takes just over an hour, and the round trip back to Mores Reserve takes about 90 minutes. For an alternative challenge, and another great walk, start with the above fourth walk up and over to Howells Hill, and back around the coast to Howells Point to the east. This will take about 2.5 hours and is best done when the southerly isn’t blowing a howling gale! The track emerges from coastal forest and follows marker posts along the beaches and rocky outcrops of the southern coastline. The track is best walked in an anticlockwise direction from the car park, returning via Kings Track. It is maintained to tramping track standard and may be muddy in places, with some steep sections.

e Gers region of Gascony is one of the least populated areas of France. There is no heavy industry or motorways, just rolling farmland, particularly crops, vineyards, cattle and geese. Villages tend to be small and far apart. The air is fresh and clean and the people live longer here than anywhere else in France despite the deliciously rich and earthy cuisine. The ‘Sentier de Saint Jacques’ or Way of St James route through Gasgony starts from Moissac and finishes just after Nogaro. The entire section between Lec-

toure and Condom has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site for its particular historical and cultural value. The bastide walled town of Lectoure, in the heart of Le Gers, has stayed much as it has for centuries. Once an important Roman town, it sits high on a ridge, a stunning landmark in the beautiful countryside for miles around. There are many walking trails that lead into the town from all directions. The Way of St James passes right through its centre then crosses rolling farmland to next stage, the UNESCO World Heritage church of Romieu. Lectoure’s centre point is the striking tower that belongs to the 15th century cathedral of St Gervais. Next door is the town hall a former 17th century palace which houses a museum in its cellars. This museum has some unusual artefacts, namely interesting altars decorated with sacrificial animals that date back to GalloRoman times. The section of the pilgrims’ route Miradoux/Lectoure/Romieu/Condom/ Laressingle covers the core of the Le Gers region and the best parts. The route has been beautified with planting of avenues of trees where it runs alongside roads to block out the tarmac plus provide shade on hot days. There are trails through waving fields of sunflowers and corn; tracks along riverbanks, across tilled fields and in the shade of forests. The route sees lots of walkers, some 40,000 in the last year. I met a party of five families who walk five days a year on the ‘chemin’ progressively making their way to St Jean Pied de Port on the border of Spain and France, where trails from all over Europe converge to join the traditional French Route of the Camino de Santiago that leads to the shrine of St James. On a trail that cut through an open, treeless, tilled field, a farmer with a gun and hunting dogs made his way towards me for no reason except to chat. The cloister is exquisite with arcades and gardens but the glory of this single nave church is the ceiling in the sacristy of the octagonal tower which is adorned with polychromatic frescoes from the 14th century. It’s a steep spiralling climb up the octagonal tower but the view of the countryside is most rewarding. There is a peep hole up there that was used by the monks to observe the church unnoticed. The route continues to Castelnau-sur-l’Auvignon which is not only significant as a stop on ‘the way’ but more recently as the “Martyr village”. The French Resistance were using the chateau, an ancient stronghold with thick block walls that was surrounded by a moat, as an arms cache. In 1944 the Germans destroyed the old ‘castelnau’ and those in it. There is a moving monument in this now peaceful village to the Resistance fighters. Condom each have their own interesting churches and shrines marking the route. Condom, high on a limestone promontory, has a magnificent Gothic cathedral with larger-than-life bronze sculptures of Alexander Dumas’ characters D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers in its foreground. Condom is also the centre of Armagnac production, a proud tradition of the area passed down through generations. You can visit an Armagnac house to witness the lengthy ageing process that sees the first pressing evolve over years of maturation to the rich plum coloured liqueur that is rated (and priced) more highly than cognac. Bottles average around €400. I settled for an Armagnac infused soufflé that evening at dinner instead! A wonderful circuit walk from Condom Above: A family near Sentiere Saint Jacque. Once inside it’s a revelation of life in the Middle Ages with houses, a church, well, latrines and fortifications. The village has been authentically restored as it was saved from rack and ruin in 1920. Food is a special feature of Le Gers with foie gras, confit of duck, fresh produce and seafood. Gasgony does produce its own wine. It borders the Bordeaux wine region so there is an abundance of fine wine to toast the end of a walking day.

he Puhinui Stream Forest Trail (the full loop trail is approximately 4kms) in Totara Park, Manurewa, Auckland, was gorgeous with the sunlight dappling the native ferns and palms. The trail passes beside beautiful totara, puriri, nikau and kauri trees. Enjoy soaking up the beauty of the lush native forest – which is an example of a lowland broadleaf conifer forest and has a total of 155 native plant species. There are great spots to stop and picnic along the trail and children’s playground areas (including a children’s flying fox). Dogs on-leash on the trail, but there are off-leash areas. It makes for a great family day out. (And if you are into mountain biking or want to give it a try, there is a 15 km mountain bike track here too). Nearby Walks include: Wattle Downs, and Conifer Grove. Auckland Botanic Gardens—www. aucklandbotanicgardens.co.nz is a nearby attraction. Description: A mix of level paths, steps and slightly inclined paths. Suitable for users of average fitness and mobility. May require boots in wet weather, running shoes suitable in dry weather.
