New Tasmanian walking tours
Park Trek Walking Holidays launched two new four-day itineraries at ATE – Three Capes Track Highlights and Bay of Fires, both four-day excursions in Tasmania. The Three Capes Track walk explores the Tasman Peninsula in southeast Tasmania, known for its dramatic coastline and vertical sea cliffs. Bay of Fires incorporates beaches, rock formations and the clear waters of the Tasmanian east coast. Huitema says the company operates its guided around Australia and is ‘the next tier down’ from the more luxurious Great Walks of Australia. ‘We are mid-range, relaxed and low key. We are eco-certified and nature based so it is all about Walking tours get runs on the boardwalking in the natural environment.’Huitema says some of Park Trek’s tours are selling out extremely quickly this year. These include the Larapinta and West MacDonnell ranges in Central Australia, the Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Litchfield in the north of Northern Territory, and The Kimberley, El Questro & The Bugles in Western Australia.
Longer Heaphy Track mountain biking season proposed
The Department of Conservation is inviting people to have their say through written submissions on a proposal to extend the Heaphy Track mountain biking season from its current five months to eight months. It is proposed to increase the mountain biking season on the Kahurangi National Park track from 1 May to 30 September currently to 1 April to 30 November but excluding the four days of Easter.
DOC is carrying out a partial review of the Kahurangi National Park Management Plan specifically to consider lengthening the Heaphy Track mountain biking season. DOC Golden Bay Operations Manager Andrew Lamason said the extended mountain biking season was being proposed to promote more use of the Heaphy Track and to give mountain bikers more opportunity to ride it in outside of the winter months. “The current mountain biking season is mostly in winter when cold weather, including snow, can make riding the track more difficult. Most mountain bikers are choosing to ride it in May and September and numbers on the track rise considerably in those two months. A review of a 2011-2013 trial of the five-month mountain biking season on the Heaphy Track found minimal conflict between walkers and mountain bikers.
The 78-kilometre Heaphy Track is suited to mountain bikers with advanced skills (Grade 4) and but expert (Grade 5) technical skills can be required in wet and cold weather.

Free Wi-Fi now in Queenstown
New Zealand’s favourite visitor destination is more connected to the world than ever before with the official launch of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Queenstown recently. The areas are The Village Green, Earnslaw Park, The Mall and Beach Street. Downtown QT general manager Steve Wilde says free Wi-Fi in major towns and cities around the world is now an expectation amongst travellers, business people, and residents alike. “Queenstown is now at the top of the game with this launch. Destinations are expected to offer this service to travellers who need to stay connected,” he said. Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd says the launch of free Wi-Fi in the town centre adds to the resort’s world class cosmopolitan reputation. The service will make it easy for visitors to share their excitement about visiting, and access information about the town during their visit. “It is a very exciting development for Queenstown and will add a lot of value to the visitor experience here, allowing them to share their photos, videos and stories from four convenient downtown locations,” he said. Visitors will be able to access 1GB of data each day when they log in to the service using their email, or social media account details. Glenfern Sanctuary Auckland’s newest regional park
Queensland Bush Tucka Walk
Rainforestation Nature Park, located in Kuranda Tropical North Queensland, has launched a new activity within the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience - the Bush Tucka Walk - as part of the attraction’s 40 year birthday celebrations. The 30-minute walk offers guests the opportunity to learn about the rainforest plants and fruits used as traditional food and medicine by indigenous people, as well as sample some of the fruits in the BBQ buffet lunch offered at the park. The Bush Tucka Walk was built by William Enoch-Tranby, the local sales executive for The CaPTA Group, with the help of other Pamagirri guides at Rainforestation Nature Park. Enoch-Tranby says guests on the walk learn more about how his ancestors had lived in the rainforest. ‘Our guides explain the different plants and fruits, but also the calendar plants that were used to indicate when to move to the coast, or when to eat a certain animal or fish,’ he said. ‘Guests can learn about the different types of huts that were used as shelter, and the weapons and implements that were used in hunting and everyday life.’ The Bush Tucka Walk can be experienced by the public as an add-on experience, or as part of the Premium Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience day tour.

Cook’s Cove is a haven of peace
Step out on Cook’s Cove Walkway and you’ll discover a soulful sense of history, writes Paul Rush tober 1769 after a year-long journey The people of the East Cape seem to it’s the perfect holiday destination. have a way of escaping time. Nothing I’ve left my watch at home and have happens in a hurry here, which is why no set itinerary. Tolaga Bay is a place to relax and tune in to the easy-going lifestyle and culture of the Ngati Porou people. Teenagers are riding along on the beach splashing into the shallows, bright sunlight glistening on the horse’s flanks. Children are playing with a skipping rope and singing ‘tahi, rua, toru, wha’ as they jump high in time with their song. Life is good here in this bounteous land. The 660 metre-long Tolaga Bay Wharf has been upgraded with a $5.5 million makeover and remains the longest freestanding pier in New Zealand. Captain James Cook, the great navigator, sailed into the bay in Oc-

from England and a violent clash with the Maoris of Poverty Bay. By way of contrast the Tolaga Bay iwi were positively welcoming, surrounding the Endeavour with canoes laden with fish and kumara to trade. Botanist Joseph Banks wrote, ‘the people live in a state of profound peace, with fine boats, clothes and carved work. They live in greater affluence than any others we saw.’ Crew member, Sydney Parkinson, described the countryside as ‘agreeable beyond description’ and so it was that Cook anchored in a delightfully sheltered cove called Opoutama, in the lee of Pourewa Island. It takes me just five minutes to enAbove: Tolaga Bay wharf is the longest in New Zealand. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

ter the walkway through the stylised Maori pa gateway and climb up the slick clay path to open grassland. Placid, newly-shorn sheep show little concern as I encroach on the wellbrowsed pasture, wending my way up between healthy looking cabbage trees to the cliff top directly above the Tolaga Bay Wharf. The panoramic view of the entire bay is breathtaking. The fierce sun is painting silver streaks on the broad, sluggish Uawa River, which spills out into the surf between two expanses of sandy beach that are stacked with countless wave-lashed and sunbleached tree trunks. They have been carried down in recent violent floods, congesting the beach beside the wharf to the extent that local fishermen are using their tractors to clear a launch pad for their boats. The cliff top track leads me over a style into the domain of a dozen squawking magpies. Some are inclined to display aggression by execut-

ing well-planned mock dives over my head but a wave of my arms dissuades them. Mounting the solid wooden lookout platform standing 120 metres above sea level, I have a stunning view of the cutest little, rock-bound cove I could ever imagine. The blue waters are quite calm, being in the lee of a very distinctive form - the Bishop’s mitre that dominates Mitre Rocks. The keyhole-like cove is confined by steep, eroded cliffs on two sides and leads into a gentle stream that bisects a swathe of surprisingly flat alluvial pastureland. Rolling hillocks dotted with cabbage trees lead to steep slopes covered with stands of manuka and regenerating native forest. Apart from the cuteness of the small cove, the scene could be typical of any East Cape coastal scenery. But this place is special and I can’t escape a feeling of nostalgia and reverence for this very important part of New Zealand’s heritage.
The Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti tribe were the first to accept Cook as a peaceful trader and cooperate with him. They taught him a range of practices such as using manuka branches as brooms and helped him collect wood, celery, scurvy grass, plant samples and fresh water from a spring in the bay. After six days of their hospitality, his crew packed away Joseph Bank’s plant samples and detailed descriptions of ‘a great variety of beautiful birds’, and the Endeavour weighed anchor and sailed away in a very precise circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook managed to produce an amazingly accurate map of what was then a virtually unknown land. Descending wooden steps in the shade of a manuka canopy I reach the flat land and marvel at how Cook ever managed to manoeuvre his bark into the confined waters of the bay. commemorates his visit to the area to repair his ship and take on fresh supplies. A strange hole-in-the-wall rock formation affording a framed view of Tolaga Bay is nearby. The most impressive feature of the bay is the absolute peace and tranquillity of the whole scene. If I ignore the presence of the sheep, it feels as if nothing has changed since that day in 1769 when the ship’s boats slid onto the shingle and the Jack Tars in baggy breeches jumped ashore, rolled their water barrels up the beach and excavated the spring. I find it remarkably easy to take a small leap of imagination and visualise the scene. I sit for a while in contemplation of this momentous first friendly contact between European and Maori peoples in this pristine, unsullied natural harbour. History was made here almost 250 years ago in a place that today is largely unknown and unheralded – an innocent, innocuous little cove. Retracing my steps, I cross back over the style, skirt around the silent sheep, spot the magpies winging away to a safe distance while yodelling their distinctive song and follow the line of yellow track markers back to the road and Tolaga Bay township. I notice there has been extensive replanting of trees and shrubs around

Walking Weekend
has huge variety of walks
By Steph Godsiff The Bay of Islands Walking Weekend has a huge variety of walks. We walk many of the islands and remote spots on the peninsula that are hard to access as individuals – the walking weekend makes it cost effective and hassle free.
These walks are spectacular with breath taking scenery, amazing flora and fauna. This month we will look at two of our favourite walks – both very different experiences. The first and an all-time favourite – the Moturua and Motuarohia Island Walk. Travel aboard the R Tucker
Thompson, which is a total experience in itself – this amazing olde tall ship with it’s fantastic crew is a real treat and a perfect way to travel to your destination in the Bay of Islands. Sail past the spot where Captain Cook anchored in 1769 just before we land barefooted on Motuarohia Island. Hear some history of Cook, the firing of a canon and the theft of kumara from the locals. Learn of the ghastly murder of the whole family of Robertons who farmed there. Re-join the ship for the short voyage to Moturua Island. More murders happened here…lots more. Stand where the French, under the

command of Marian du Fresne set up their hospital and find out why he never sailed again…anywhere. See where the WWII Bay of Islands mine field was operated from and the history of an alcoholic survivor in a Kentucky rest home. it! Skirt around an early Maori midden from the 1300’s and imagine the human bones it contains. Visit the bay where the Clendon family farmed and find out how far some cattle can swim. Observe the feathered wild life, saddlebacks, tui, fantails, North Island robin, (who is the latest release on the islands), and the very endangered dotterel who insist on nesting near the high tide mark which further endangers its existence. The views, lagoons, beaches and bush leave you breathless on every step of the journey. This day trip is truly entertaining with its stories and majestic in its beauty. Totally unique and a real must do in the Bay of Islands. Our second walk is from Russell and includes a little bit of luxury! Alex Clayton one of the Walking Weekend guides shares his experience on the Omata Estate Walk. This is a walk for those who like a small reward at the end (read a few glasses of wine and some good food!). We gather at the Russell Bowling Club for what is usually a very light hearted walk with myself and Donna as the guides, the enthusiasm starts to build. Fair enough too, the walk is by no means a stroll in the park, but the destination that we are all heading for is well worth the effort! We head through the township, past some significant heritage buildings, then up ‘Constitution Hill’ which sig7th, 8th, 9th October 2016 nifies the real start of the walk. The land was purchased from the local Maori in 1831,by captain John Wright, Omata was a key destination point for European immigrants to New Zealand. This began Omata’s involvement in Russell under European ownership. In 1883, the Deeming Family purchased 70 acres from John Wright’s estate. This land was passed down through generations until 1994 when the land was developed to make today’s Omata Estate. Omata Estate is now owned by the Cashmore Family and under the guidance of Bruce Soland (viticulturalist) and Rod McIvor (wine maker) Omata has established itself as one of Northlands premier wine growing sites. history of Tikitikiioure and its mining heritage. The stories of manual labour and a hillside village that was, at its time, larger then Russell township. Russell was not all about whalers and wenches! – you have all heard those stories, but few know of our mining heritage. There are tales of flying foxes and large ships in Orongo Bay, ready to carry the mining spoils to far away lands. With this new knowledge taken on board, our walkers carry on, thankful that we live in a day and age where manually chipping away at the mineshaft is behind us. We now stroll around the boardwalks of Orongo Bay, taking in the extensive oyster farm operations. One more steep climb up and over Te Wahapu ridge through wellestablished native bush. Plenty of bird life on offer and a rather cheery atmosphere to keep you well entertained, - your glass of wine will be well appreciated. As if sent by the angels themselves, we are then ferried back to Russell by our friends at Russell Mini Tours in their mini bus. An excellent walk with good food and wine at the end in a magical spot. Friday afternoon/evening we have a walk that takes you to the vineyard for wine tasting and delicious wood fired homemade pizza! Saturday walk to the vineyard for a daytime experience of wine tasting and sumptuous platters! Its’ a hard choice!! onway National Park is a peaceful coastal park with rainforest-clad hills, secluded beaches and panoramic outlooks over the scenic Whitsunday area of northern Queensland, Australia. This park includes the rainforestclad Conway Peninsula and protects the largest area of lowland tropical rainforest in Queensland outside Tropical North Queensland. Hoop pines grow on coastal ridges and in damp gullies, emerging above the rainforest canopy. Rugged, steep, rocky cliffs provide a spectacular 35 kilometre-long backdrop to the Whitsunday Passage and islands. Walk or boat into secluded Swamp Bay bush camping area beside a secluded pebbly beach overlooking Daydream Island. Enjoy a wide range of bushwalking opportunities that start from the Conway National Park day-use area and Mount Rooper and Coral Beach car parks. The Conway Circuit for walkers and mountain bike riders also winds through the park. From Mount Rooper lookout, take in superb views over the islands: Hamilton, Dent, Long and Henning. The view from the ridge above secluded Coral Beach is worth the effort of reaching there. Enjoy birdwatching along the tracks then relax over a picnic in the day-use area on Shute Harbour Road.

Waituna Lagoon Board walk The Department of Conservation refer to Waituna and the Awarua wetlands as one of the largest remaining wetland complexes in New Zealand - they are important for both their biological diversity and cultural significance. There was not a cloud to be seen, nor a breath of wind to be felt, as the Eastern Southland KiwiSeniors ventured out onto the 4.5km Waituna Lagoon board walk track. The boardwalk winds through low-growing manuka and shrubs,
emerging at a viewing shelter that overlooks Waituna Lagoon. Interpretation panels in the shelter provide a wealth of information on the area and its fascinating inhabitants. Fantails flitted and chirped cheek-

ily by and the ducks, black swans with their grey fluffy signets floated by in Indian file, oblivious to the upcoming duck shooting season. Wild fowl and Canadian geese gathered in their flocks, milling like a team meeting. Bird call echoed in the distance and the odd frog croaked as we traversed the boardwalk. The lagoon is periodically open to the sea and its brackish waters are an important habitat for wild fowl, native fish and trout. The flora and fauna are spectacular and, though there are very few trees, the scrub and sphagnum moss is plentiful. I watched a small artesian spring bubble away freely, the fresh clear water oozing from the opening. Pink sundews were stunningly beautiful. It’s hard to believe these carnivorous plants eat flesh. Walks are varied and plentiful and there is a challenge for all. The boardwalk is almost suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, but there are some small steps and a couple of really short areas that are a little narrow. It’s a great place to take the family www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

and view tarns full of wildlife. Nature spotting is a great way to introduce children to the outdoors and I believe this area is most suitable for all. A weather-resistant sturdy shelter overlooking the lagoon is a fantastic viewing and bird spotting point, where information on birds is also available, along with a good view of Fortrose and Stewart Island. For the KiwiSeniors from Eastern, this was their first time traversing this area, with positive comments flowing. I know they will be back to venture along the lagoon beach and view more spectacular areas of this highly prized, protected and amazing wetlands area.

Granite Arch
Scenic Circuit
Bunya Mountains 4kms (allow 1.5 hours)
An easy walk combining nature’s finest – rolling mountains, rainforest, rock pools, waterfalls and an epic fig tree. It’s no wonder this 4km trek is one of the most popular routes in Bunya Mountains National Park; which is also home to the world’s largest remaining stand of bunya pine rainforest. The park is also Queensland’s second oldest national park and the Scenic Circuit takes hikers past some of the best spots, including Festoon Falls and Tim Shea Falls.
The Pyramid
Girraween National Park 1.6km (allow 30 minutes)
A much easier walk, perfect for the family or those with limited time. Granite Arch is a cruisy 1.6km circuit that loops through open blackbutt and stringybark forests and passes right through a natural granite arch. Hot tip: Time your visit for spring to see the beautiful wildflowers.
Castle Rock
Girraween National Park 5.2km (allow 1.5-2 hours)
Above: Helping Balancing Rock stay in place
Girraween National Park 3.6km (allow 3 hours)
One of the more challenging walks, Castle Rock is a 5.2km adventure (and we mean adventure) that will take you to a rocky summit at 1,112metres. Did we mention that this hike involves steep climbs on exposed granite rock? Like all good climbs, the huffy puffy to the summit of Castle Rock is rewarded with awesome views of the granite peaks in Girraween National Park.
Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to go on the TV show Gladiators and take on their Pyramid challenge. Sadly, that show came to an end, but Mother Nature has Girraween National Park her very own Pyramid (sans awkward gladiator Lycra 7.4km (allow 3-4 hours) and padding). An easier option (compared to Castle Rock), The Sphinx This walk isn’t for those with a fear of heights as it and Turtle Rock track is a gentler hike that includes a less culminates in a scramble up a sheer granite rock face. It’s demanding walk along a ridge taking in stunning views steep and you’ll want sturdy shoes with a decent grip of the country before arriving at the main event.

Mount Cordeaux
Main Range National Park 6.8km (allow 2.5 hours)
This is a lovely 6.8km walk offering plenty of opportunities to hear and see wildlife. Mount Cordeaux (Niamboyoo in the local Aboriginal language), located in Main Range National Park, is a well-defined track that zigzags through rainforests to a lookout on the southern side that takes in fantastic views. Hot tip: Time your hike for spring when giant spear lilies are in flower on the face of Mount Cordeaux.
Crows Nest Falls via Kauyoo loop
Main Range National Park 2km (allow 50 minutes)
We all love waterfalls and the Queen Mary Falls Circuit has to be one of the easiest waterfalls to access from Brisbane. Don’t believe me? Check out our day trip to Queen Mary Falls. The 2km walk is a fave with families and budding photographers who are keen to snap a photo and enjoy a picnic. There’s a lookout at the top of the falls, but for the best photos hit the stairs, make your way to the base and take in the 40-metre plunging screen of water. Hot tip: Keep an eye out for koalas at the start and end of the walking circuit.
Governor’s Chair Lookout at Spicer’s Gap
Main Range National Park 300m (allow 5 minutes)
If you’re not a fan of breaking a sweat and are seeking something more regal, Governor’s Chair Lookout is the perfect excuse to stretch your legs with its easy 300-metre stroll. This lookout is perched at the crest of Spicer’s Gap and takes walkers to an impressive lookout over Fassifern Valley. Keep an eye out for the large rock on the edge of the cliff face, it’s rumoured this place got its name as it was apparently a popular resting spot for early Governors of Queensland when their journey took them through these parts (the original route linking Warwick and Moreton www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
Crows Nest National Park (includes The Cascades, Kauyoo Pool and Bottlebrush Pool) 2.7km (allow 1 hour)
Who doesn’t love a swim after a day of walking? A popular picnic spot for families, the Crows Nest Falls via Kauyoo Loop is a relaxed 2.7km circuit that offers not one but two swimming holes: Kauyoo Pool and Bottlebrush Pool. Keep your eyes peeled for the endangered brush-tailed rock-wallabies (Petrogale penicillata) – they can often be seen in the nearby granite hills and boulders. If you’re here in summer make sure you spend some time at The Cascades where you can hear the ‘tock tock’ call of striped march frogs. You can now view and enjoy the latest issue of-

My Favourite Walk
. Ti Point Coastal Walkway The start of the Ti Point Coastal Walkway can be found beside the wharf at the end of Ti Point Road, 3km before Leigh, in the Rodney District.
It’s my favourite walk because it brings back so many fond childhood memories of the place. We lived only a five minute drive away so most weekends were spent fishing, diving and swimming off the wharf or rowing over to the sand banks to get a feed of pipi’s. As youngsters we’d charge off down the track at a run, which made for an exhilarating
adventure. Now forty odd years later I tend to take it at a much more sedate pace and just enjoy it for the refreshing coastal vista’s. The walk is quite unique in that it’s whole length, about 3km, traverses a very special piece of coastline. The foreshore is strewn with large basaltic lava blocks. It faces out over the picturesque

Omaha Bay and most of the walk is under the cover of gnarly old pohutakawa trees. The shade afforded, provides welcome respite from the summer sun. Another great feature of the track is that it is relatively flat so it’s very user friendly for the elderly or young kids. It makes a good option for those looking for a doable family outing, with a picnic thrown in before, during or after the walk. The track starts with a well formed gravel base, wide enough for two to walk abreast and enjoy a conversation as you amble along. After about 800m the track emerges onto a grassy, tree fringed point. A couple of picnic tables are there and it makes for a popular fishing possie, if you want to cast into the narrowest part of the channel between Ti Point and Omaha beach. Above: Walking under the shade of the pohutakawa, helps take the edge off the sun. Left: Along the track some self sown clumps of naked ladies provides a stunning display of colour among the verdant green. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
My Favourite Walk
A warning though, it’s quite unsafe to swim here between tides, as a huge rip runs in and out of the harbour. After this point the track becomes a rougher, undulating, single file, packed earth, path. It then emerges out a grassy paddock before finishing at the point itself. Ascending the point gives fantastic views up and down the coast. On this particular occasion whilst admiring the views we watched a group of rock climbers from Auckland setting up some pitches on the basalt bluffs located there. It’s a prime climbing location due to the solid, sheer rock faces present – a great spot for climbing, abseiling and chimneying. For a more adventurous challenge, instead of turning back, one could walk the coastline up to Matheson’s Bay. To do this you’d need to target a mid to low tide and allow another couple of hours negotiating a very challenging rocky foreshore and arrange for a pick up. On our last trip, it was during the hot, humid, February weather so a swim at the wharf provided welcome relief and a chance to cool down and wash off the accumulated sweat. All in all it’s a great walk if you have a couple hours and you feel the need to revitalise your soul in on a coastal classic. Below: Friends and family have erected a memorial to fisherman Maxim Efremychev, who lost his life off this popular fishing spot.

The Green Ring: fabled and secret trails
Follow the folk tales of mythical creatures amidst mystical locations: The Green Ring circular trail in Austria provides the perfect contrast to ordinary city life. Powerful giants and petrified wizards, cunning witches and a mystic mountain that still quakes and shakes deep inside: Mythical figures and places like these fit perfectly in the enchanting scenery around Lech-Zürs am Arlberg. It’s hardly surprising you can expect to encounter them on the Green Ring circular trail - a three-stage hike across mountain ridges and deep valleys, past magical mountain lakes and waterfalls with hidden installations and entertaining legends humorously and charmingly told to entertain hikers. The latest idea is the Green Puzzle Ring, home to many strange secrets worth revealing between Lech and the Rud Alpe. Nature itself makes a lasting impression: the journey up to the Rüfikopf on the cablecar, the view of the secluded Zürsersee, the sensuous experience of striding through the cotton grass meadow, or a picnic in the mystical “Sagenwald” forest of fables. These are all moments which revive one’s own love of life and creativity and continue to make an impact long after the vacation is over. Above: Zurser See (Lake). Shared pathway to country school open
A
new 1.2km $230,000 shared pathway from James Line to Stoney Creek Road ending at the Whakaronga School, Whakaronga in the Manawatu was officially opened recently. Whakarongo School children and others were able to bike or walk to class for the first time in 12 years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Palmerston North City Mayor Grant Smith, who cut the ribbon in front of an enthusiastic crowd gathered to celebrate the new pathway. Palmerston North City Council and Manawatū District Council had a shared vision to make the region the best place to ride a bike, he said. With projects like this, “I’m confident we’re on track.” School board chairman Phil Ward said: “It’s a remarkable achievement – especially when you consider it’s been less than a year since our submission to Council.”

The Cobb Valley great for day and overnight walks
The Cobb Valley in Kahurangi National Park is one of my favourite walks. The valley was originally formed by glacial action and contains very very old rocks - sandstones, schists, shales and quartzites. They are really lovely and I wanted to load them into my pack. In some areas, trilobites and graptolites have been found. These are advanced life forms from ancient seas. The geology of this area is fascinating,
and has so much variation within a short distance. We left Takaka at 9.00am and after clearing several tree falls off the Cobb Valley Road, reached Trilobite Hut at the road end at 11.30am. The track to Fenella hut started off over a mixture of beech forest and red tussocks, with buttercups, gentians, daisies and all sorts of herbs scattered amongst them. There were a lot of wekas poking amongst the grasses, not at all bothered by us, and fantails and bellbirds noisy in the trees. In 90 minutes we reached Chaffeys Hut in a lovely clearing by the river. Originally built in 1952, it became derelect and was rebuilt in 2014. It now sleeps six, and is cozy and comfortable. Past Chaffeys, the trail was prettier, with moss and lichen covering the ground and drooping from the trees. There were lots of side streams most of which were bridged. In another hour we reached the ‘Tent Camp’.- a permanent tent of canvas and beech branches, with

a fireplace, and a load of firewood stacked ready, so different from the usual bush huts. From here the trail climbed a bit over rocky ground to Cobb Hut, a tiny four bunk hut, then continued up exposed rocky steps. By now the trees were much smaller and hebes bordered the track. ■series of waterfalls. It was a really pretty section of track and we reached Fenella Hut about 20 minutes later. This is a perfect place for families because there are frequent picnic or camping spots, and huts to explore. Fenella is a lovely spacious hut, and a good base for several day walks to nearby lakes or peaks. We arrived just in time. The weather deteriorated from soft drizzle to heavy rain. Later it was so heavy we couldn’t hear each other. It rained solidly all night, but by 9.00am the sun was out, www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

so we set off for the return journey. The walk back was even more beautiful. The river was raging, with white caps all the way, the track a stream in places, and carpeted with deep red/brown leaves in others. Grassy areas were glowing in the sun, but with knee deep pools to wade through. The moss was greener, the sky blue and butterflies were sunning themselves on rocks. This was a delightful walk, perfect for a weekend escape, or even just a day’s exploration. It is less than two hours drive from Nelson. Above: The track wanders through a section of beech forest. While many come for fantastic new tourism products such as the Forgotten World Adventures self-driven rail carts on the old Ohura-Stratford rail line, or to canoe the Whanganui River, some are here as part of walking the world renowned 3,000km Te Araroa Trail which runs the length of New Zealand from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Formally opened in 2011 the Te Araroa Trail has been described by National Geographic as “one of the best long walks on the planet”, and just last year CNN listed Te Araroa as one of the world’s top 10 long trails, along with the 3500km Appalachian Trail and the 6200km Sentiero in Italy. Ruapehu councillor and chairperson of the Taumarunui-Ohura Ward Committee Graeme Cosford who is also a life-long tramper himself said that he cannot recall such an influx of visitors coming through Taumarunui. “As a keen tramper and outdoor enthusiast myself I make a point of having a chat with as many of these walkers as I can when I see them in town.” “You can’t miss them with their backpacks laden down with food, camping and other and outdoor gear,” he said. “Many of them are spending time in Taumarunui resting after about 40 to 50 days on the trail before tackling the 42 Traverse and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, with some then returning this way to canoe the Whanganui River which all form part of the Trail.” “The range of nationalities is huge with people coming from all around the world to walk the trail or sections of it.” Cr Cosford said that small towns like Taumarunui stand to benefit from the growing number of Te Araroa walkers and the economic benefits they bring. “Anyone who has travelled overseas can attest that meeting with the locals is often the most rewarding and memorable part of the trip.” said Cr Cosford. What is happening in Taumarunui is also happening in other areas on the Te Araroa Trail who have also noticed a big increase in overseas walkers stopping off for a rest, refuel, or walking through over this last summer. It has been estimated that over 350 and possibly up to 500 walkers walked the length of the trail this last summer. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Our message is that we want people to enjoy the outdoors, but they must also be respectful of landholders and the environment because easy access to the outdoors is something we want to preserve for future generations. We will continue to promote access, while stressing that it comes with responsibility. We must not take what we have for granted.

Cambridge area perfect for walkers
The town of Cambridge and its surrounding area is perfect for walkers. The town of Cambridge in the Waikato is mostly flat, there’s plenty to look at and there are dedicated pathways to suit every style of walker from those who enjoy a physical challenge to those who merely want to amble. Established walks include:
Cambridge’s tribute Walk of Fame to their equine and sporting heroes. Wander along Duke St to find 25 plaques honouring the achievements of local stars in the town’s Sporting Walk of Fame, and as you turn into Victoria Street, look for 18 mosaics set into the footpath of prominent local horses. mountain bikers, the Waikato River Trails is very suitable for capable walkers, enabling you to explore 100kms of pathway beside the country’s longest river. The track passes five lakes and four hydro dams, taking you through bush, forests and along stretches of boardwalk built over wetlands. The track is signposted with stories of local history. To access the trails from Cambridge, head south on State Highway One and turn off at Horahora Road. Go 5kms to the Pokaiwhenua Bridge car park which is the starting point of the Karapiro Trail.

The Tree Trust has created a walk that enables you to see outstanding examples of the rare and exotic trees that help give Cambridge its mantle of The Town of Trees. The Cambridge i-SITE Information Centre can provide a map .
Maungakawa Scenic Reserve
The Maungakawa Scenic Reserve has a short native bush walk (about 20 minutes) that offers good opportunities to see tui and wood pigeon. The area is particularly beautiful during spring
when daffodils and other flowers are in bloom. Head to the peak and you’ll enjoy lovely views of Cambridge and the surrounding area. To get to the reserve from Cambridge, go along Thornton Road, past the Oaklands subdivision and turn left onto Maungakawa Road. The reserve, about 14 minutes’ drive, is well signposted at the top of the hill. The Cambridge i-SITE Information Centre has an A4 information sheet with background information on the reserve and its tracks/walkways.

Night time event provides a unique way to experience Auckland By Penny White
Walking Stars, New Zealand’s first night-time walking half marathon, is returning for its fourth year in Auckland on 26 November 2016. The event is organised by Cancer Society to raise funds for cancer research and supporting people with cancer. Last year’s event was a huge success, with over $300,000 raised to support people with cancer. Dressed in coloured lights and glow-in-thedark accessories, more than 2,500 participants left Auckland Domain at sunset and walked through Auckland’s vibrant inner city streets. As one participant described it,
“the yellow balloons bobbing along looked like a huge crocodile walking around the city.” For some it was an event that kept them focussed on their health goals prior to the Christmas revelry. For others it was a chance to see Auckland like never before. Poignantly, most were doing it in dedication to loved

We are looking for readers’ favourite New Zealand walks. Many of us go out regularly walking on a route which we class as our favourite, for a number of reasons. Perhaps because for it’s scenery, it’s safe, it’s challenging, it’s flat, it’s hilly, it’s varied, or for whatever reason. We would like you to tell us in your own words what is you favourite walk and why. Email us a story from say 250 up to 1200 words including a photo or photos. ones who were, or had, gone through cancer. Many loved the walk because it was at night rather than in the heat of the day, and the cheers and encouragement from people along the route through Auckland’s nightlife districts were a huge highlight. Whatever their motivation, Walking Stars was a unique and memorable event for everyone involved. In a post event survey 97 per cent of participants said they would recommend it to family and friends. One participant commented: “The atmosphere was buzzing, people cheering us as we walked past bars, cars tooting their horns. I’m an Aucklander but I have never experienced the city like this. It was electric.” Another said the challenge of completing a half-marathon was the highlight, adding that cancer treatment ‘is no walk in the park either’. “I was humbled by the efforts of other walkers. It was amazing seeing the signs about loved ones lost to cancer on people’s backs. It was such a re-

warding event.” Walking Stars is a half marathon achievable by everyone, says John Loof, Chief Executive of Cancer Society Auckland Northland. “As the 21km route is predominantly flat it makes it suitable for even novice walkers. Participants include couples, groups of friends, work teams, families and boot camp buddies. And together they all help raise important funds for cancer.” “We are really encouraging walkers to fundraise for the event,” continues Loof, “The more money that is raised the more help can be provided to people with cancer and their families.” Super Early Bird entries are available until 31 July for the 2016 event. For only $49, the entry includes a $40 Shoe Science voucher, training plans, a healthy eating plan and much more. To find out more and register for Walking Stars 2016, visit walkingstars. org.nz. Glenfern Sanctuary Walk

Glenfern Sanctuary on Great Barrier Island is a predator controlled forest, where threatened and endangered species are able to thrive once more. From its humble inception over 20 years ago by the late Tony Bouzaid, the epic story of Glenfern has evolved throughout the years to become a centre of rare biodiversity and pride for a remote island community. Bordered by a predator proof fence and the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, Glenfern is a very special place on a spectacular and unique island. Glenfern Walk is approximately 2km long and showcases a lot of what is so special about the sanctuary. The loop walk usually takes about an hour (although you are welcome to take longer) and is moderately steep in places. It is suitable for young children, older folk and anyone with moderate fitness. At the present time it is off-season mode so there are no guided tours for a while but you are more than welcome to come on up and experience Glenfern Walk at you own pace. Just follow the signs up to the office and grab your self a map like this one. It’ll show you where to go and things to look out for along the way. Gates are open from 10:00 am to Sunset every day of the year.
