Ancient hot baths a welcome sight for cyclists

Explore is offering moderate-grade cyclists a 14-day Cycle Japan trip. The venture takes in the coastal landscapes of Noto Peninsula and the highlands of Shirakawa-go. The tour will cycle along the Noto Peninsula, pedal through the highlands of Shirakawa-go and temples and gardens of Sojiji. Cyclists also head to Wakura Onsen to take a dip in the ancient hot baths. Trips depart in October and May, 2017, and cost from $7550 per person. The price includes seven nights hotel and five nights guesthouse accommodation, seven other meals, a sushi-making class, bike hire, transport and cycle guide.

New Walking Access Mapping System now live

The New Zealand Walking Access Commission has launched an improved version of its free nationwide Walking Access Mapping System to make it even easier for people to identify public access in the outdoors. The upgrade includes a new-look interface and added functionality that allows those with GPS devices to export data and upload route plans to view against the mapping system’s public access information – something users suggested through a recent survey. There have also been upgrades to the system’s drawing and measuring tools, which will help people more accurately mark areas on the map and measure distances. New Zealand Walking Access Commission chief executive Eric Pyle said he was delighted with the improvements to the system. “Many users asked for the export to GPS functionality, along with improvements to the system’s loading speed and drawing and measuring tools. I am pleased that we have delivered on these requests. Other improvements, such as improving the help guide and simplifying the interface, will make for a more user-friendly desktop and mobile experience. “The upgraded Walking Access Mapping System makes it even easier for people to plan and enjoy excursions in New Zealand’s stunning outdoors.” Mr Pyle said the Commission strongly encouraged user feedback on the new system. The Walking Access Mapping System (www.wams.org.nz) is a free website showing publicly accessible land across New Zealand. It displays topographic maps and aerial photography, and includes a built-in ‘enquiry tool’ that allows users to contact the New Zealand Walking Access Commission with queries about access to the outdoors or details of public access issues that need resolving.

Going walkabout in Zambia’s National Park Sanctuary Retreats is offering a back to the future experience for travellers looking to explore Africa. It has 40% savings on two of its Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park properties – Sanctuary Chilele Prudential Lodge and Sanctuary Puku Ridge – which are both home to walking safari experiences. The concept of a modern walking safari was pioneered in Luangwa Valley during the 1940s. The park’s wildlife makes it a perfect on-foot safari spot – there are zebra, antelope, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, lion, leopards, hippo, elephant and crocodile. Michael McCall, Sanctuary Retreats’ director of sales Australia, NZ & Asia says: ‘Climbing out of a vehicle and stepping down to the same level as lions, elephants and zebra delivers an incredibly intimate insight into the intricacies of the African veldt.’ An eight-plus night stay at Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge costs from just US$234 per person per night twin share (down from US$390 per night). Meanwhile, an eight-plus night stay at Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp has dropped from US$450 to US$270 per person per night twin share. www.sanctuaryretreats.com

Here one can stroll along the many signposted tracks (some with boardwalks) each with a different coloured marked arrow (so that you won’t get lost) and enjoy this wonderful iconic protected forest in all it’s beautiful glory. There are many tracks of varying lengths to suit all ages and abilities some flat some hilly and a wonderful panoramic view to greet those who are prepared to venture uphill. Redwoods - a beautiful and magical 5600 hectares, proudly boasts towering exotic and native trees as well as many different species of ferns and bush. It is a haven for walkers, joggers, mountain bikers, recreational biking, horse trails, runners, hikers and dog walkers. There is an array of tracks and walks too many to mention to ex-

plore and maps and brochures can be obtained at the information centre by the main car parking area, also a coffee cart for those who have a need and also toilets. Mountain biking attracts enthusiasts from all over the world and exploring the forest by walking, biking or horseback is something to be seriously considered.

forest walk There are 145 ks of bike trails catering for all levels of capability, information on this can be obtained from the Info centre. Many of the tracks are easy forest roads and considering this is still a working plantation forest it easily blends in as a public recreation area as well. The array of different tracks include

open, hilly, bush, forest, old logging and grassy area’s short walks and day ones take your pick. There are many places to picnic find a fallen log to sit on. An added addition to this beautiful peaceful place of tranquillity is the Redwoods Treewalk the start of which is situated by the Information Centre. The Treewalk is half a kilometre long and consists of 23 suspension bridges, sits 12 metres above the forest and weaves between the majestic Redwood trees. It is approximately 30 to 40 minutes in duration. Walk and sway between these magnificent trees from up above where you can experience a birds eye view of the surrounding environment. This walkway has been designed to preserve the trees, so wonderful considering all the lovely precious forests world wide which are now being destroyed for ill gotten financial gain. It is certainly worth the experience to walk amongst the canopy, probably not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. You can walk this at your own pace as you can the forest. There is an admission fee for the Treetop Walk but well worth it. If you are a keen photographer the best photos are after it has been raining when the forest is wet and on an overcast day. You will be rewarded by the magnificent strong colours that have been produced. I cannot put into words just how magical and beautiful this forest is, experience it for yourself.

Warkworth Walks – eight is great!

By Luke Williamson

.

Back for our eighth year in 2016, from 10th to 13 November Warkworth Walks offer 15 guided trails, including five new walks and the return of ten of our most popular walks says Luke Williamson.

Once again, we focus on getting you to the special places you normally can’t go and providing local hospitality along the way. Our two most popular walks, Gibbs Farm Sculpture Park and Hauturu, are back on the programme and guaranteed to sell out. These walks offer unique opportunities to see stunning, restricted parts of our local environment. New this year is a ferry/walking trip to Motuora Island. Admire

Kawau Bay from the ocean on the way out, then enjoy a guided walk around the island by volunteers from the restoration society who will show you the conservation work they are doing. BBQ and swimming cap off a wonderful day. Also new is the opportunity to walk from Mount Auckland, across private land, to Dill Farm, bordering the Hoteo River. Along the way are numerous beautiful views and, on arrival, BBQ lunch. This is one for the true hikers. Mahu Coastal Explorer debuts this year and takes walkers from Sandspit, around the low tide flats of Brick Bay, Snells Beach, Algies Bay and Scandrett reserve, to Martins Bay. Experience this coastline in a new and unique way.

10 Walking New Zealand, issue no 225 - 2016

Photographers are invited to join a new trail starting at dawn and visiting photographic highlights or our local area. Sweeping views, satellite station, waterfront work sheds, farmers’ market and more. Shutters at the ready! We also go back to our local gem – Tawharanui. Led by an expert guide from TOSSI (Tawharanui Open Sanctuary) you will get away from the main routes, and discover the unique flora and fauna. If you are lucky, there may even be some takahe sightings. We are delighted by the return of trails at Duck Creek, Big Omaha, and Pohuehue to Puhoi. These walks all feature glorious views, native bush, and the opportunity to take in local food and beverage. They received rave reviews last year and will almost certainly be popular again this year. After a memorable day last year there will be a repeat of the Pakiri to Goat Island coastal walk, a good choice for anyone who loves long, white beaches, rock pools and Leigh Sawmill Café. Sandspit to Brick Bay offers visiting rights to sculptures off the public trail, plus lunch at the famous glasshouse at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. Above: A group at the trig. Below left: A great view out over the coast. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

High Achiever

Walking Earthquake Recovery By Michelle Whitaker, Avon-Ōtākaro Network

It is hard enough losing your family home in the Christchurch February 22nd earthquake 2011 and having to move out of the newly designated Red Zone but Evan Smith also had to deal with being diagnosed with liver cancer later that year. Evan has worked tirelessly throughout the past five years for the recovery of the most earthquake damaged areas in the east of Christchurch. He instigated and leads the AvonŌtākaro Network in changing Christchurch’s Avon River red zone from a place of despair and tragedy to a land of beauty and joy. He kept his illness very quiet, with many who worked with him admiring

his work ethic and commitment to the community, having no idea he was also dealing with the big C. Evan had various treatments over the years but eventually the only option was to have a liver transplant. July ended several months of preparation and anticipation for Evan and his family. It was the day his son gave him the majority of his liver. Jason, 18 years

old generously and amazingly offered to go into surgery to donate part of his liver. This incredible gift was tough on them both but they have come through well. Jason’s liver regrew in a matter of a few weeks. Evan is now out of hospital recuperating at his brother’s home in Auckland and hopes to be back home soon. His recovery is hard though with the doctors telling him it will take at least three months. However, Evan is determined to get back to health as quickly as possible through walking. Before his surgery Evan mapped out six walks through the Avon Red Zone to be part of The Breeze Walking Festival 24th September to 9th October 2016. He is now hoping to build his stamina to help lead each of the walks for Avon-Ōtākaro Network amounting to over 30km. Last month he walked the furthest Above: Volunteers planting in the Redzone. High Achiever

since surgery, a whopping 200m, which left him out of breath. But he is getting better every day and has started low impact physio at the Hospital as part of his recuperation. So why does Evan think these walks are so important? For five years the 443 hectares of no man’s land has been off limits to the public. For the first time permission has been given for public activity with the six walks. It is a great chance to at last to reengage with this damaged land. The opportunity to think what was there before, to explore the possibilities for the future and the potential of the land alongside the river. For Evan and Avon-Ōtākaro Network the river is an essential part of the picture. Improving the amenity of the river through a walking and cycling track from city to sea, for example, would be for the benefit of the city and Greater Christchurch as a whole. Each walk takes you through different areas of the Red Zone and explores different proposals for the use of the land by community. Ideas like an Eden Project, Flatwater lake, Forest Park, White Water course, food forests, environmental regeneration and flood protection. A Mahinga Kai Exemplar has already successfully begun beside the Red Zone and waterways in Travis Reserve. Led by Avon-Ōtākaro Network they hope to expand into the adjoining Red Zone. So the Avon-Ōtākaro Network’s Red Zone Treks provide comfortable physical exercise and for many the first opportunity to learn about the red zone, experience how large they are and then start thinking about how it could be used, what could happen there. Evan is recovering from surgery and is aiming to do the walks, so how about you doing it too? For himself, Evan knows it is an aspirational goal to help lead all the walks but he’s a very determined man.

Croatia has many under-

rated attractions for walkers

By Jill Worrall

Just a few months ago I stepped off a small motor-cruiser on an abandoned Benedictine monastery. This monastery, the origins of the island of Mljet in southern Dalmatia, just a short sail from which date back to the 12th century, is the spectacular fortified town of Dubrovnik. It was sunny, warm and the pine trees that clad the hills surrounding the harbour were creaking gently in

set on an island within an island as Mla light breeze. I was setting off on a jet has two saltwater lakes at its heart, gentle walk that would (with the help Malo and Veliki Jazero (little and big of another even smaller boat) end at lake). The monastery sits in Big Lake. A third of Mljet, including the lakes, is a national park and the thickly wooded hills can come as a surprise to visitors who maybe imagine all of Croatia to be more rock-strewn and thinly vegetated. But to me it sums up Croatia’s coastline’s rather under-rated attractions for walkers – beautiful landscapes, Above: Skradin, on the Dalmatian coast is a picture-postcard perfect Croatian town, and the gateway to Krka National Park. Left: St Stephen’s Cathedral in the centre of Hvar’s old town was built in the 16th and17th centuries in Venetian Renaissance style. It faces a square that is the largest in Dalmatia.

the Adriatic Sea never far away, and layer upon layer of history. In fact, the history of Mjlet blurs into legend – apparently Odysseus stayed seven years on Mljet and more recently, if nearly 2000 years ago can be regarded as such, it’s possible St Paul was shipwrecked here too. If I’d been Odysseus I wouldn’t have been worried about spending seven years on Mljet with the fragrance of the pine trees all around, and lakes and surrounding sea perfect for swimming. Whether or not he’d have appreciated the Croatian red wine and pizza I ate in the harbour-side café after my walk we will never know. Setting foot on Mljet had extra significance for me, because, ever since I first visited a Croatian Island four years ago, I had wanted to bring people back to the region on a walking holiday. Together with my Croatian friend, Zlatko, who hails from Dubrovnik, we’d been working for some time on the perfect walking programme for 2017 using a motor yacht for just 16 passengers as both transport and

home away from home. Mljet was one of the “musts” to include. So now I’d seen it for myself but it was a case of “wait there’s more”. Mljet is one of over 1000 Croatian islands that dot the Adriatic Sea. Most are uninhabited, while others are justifiably popular with visitors from all over the world.

Croatia has many under-rated attractions for walkers However, Croatia as a whole still sails a little under the mass tourism radar, which means even on islands as well-known as Hvar it does not take long to leave the cafes and busy harbours behind and find a path and perhaps best of all, a swimming spot, all to yourself. We have included Hvar in our itinerary because, despite its popularity, it’s also an island of exceptional natural beauty and the source of one of Croatia’s signature products – lavender. A walk through the countryside of Hvar takes visitors through fields of lavender and also olive groves, another of the island’s most important exports. You can still clock up plenty of walking in the town itself as there is a wealth of history within its historic limestone heart. The Greeks came here in the 4th century but it was the Venetians, who settled in the 15th and 16th century, who bequeathed Hvar with its special character. For those feeling really fit there’s a steep climb up to the Spanish Fortress which was commissioned by the Hapsburg king, Charles V, in 1551. The reward for the strenuous pull up hill is a superb view across the town and to the islands beyond. There is also the bonus of a café. Croatia’s cafes and bars are one of the extra treats of walking in the Adriatic. There’s almost always excellent cof-

fee, some legendary cakes (one of my favourites is a combination of pastry, apple, fresh cheese and poppy seeds). At least on a walking holiday you can indulge occasionally knowing that the following day you will be able to walk off the damage. The Adriatic is also famous for its fish and seafood and eating out after a day exploring on foot is not expensive and reliably good. Red mullet, octopus, shrimps along with oysters from the coastal settlement of Ston are all superb, especially when accompanied by some of Croatia’s extremely good wines. There are special links between the vineyards along Croatia’s coast and New Zealand because it was from here (also known as Dalmatia) that the winemakers who helped establish NZ winemaking came: Babich, Delegat, Selak and Nobilo among them. Before gaining independence in 1991 following the break-up of Yugoslavia, several islands in the Adriatic, including Vis and Lastovo, were reserved solely for use by the Yugoslavian military. Now no longer off limits they are still little visited even by Croatians themselves, making them ideal for walking. Zlatko, who in a former life was a specialist diver in the Yugoslavian www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

navy, knows these islands well (both above and below water!) so as a guide to the region I couldn’t do any better. “Vis was once a base for Tito (former president of Yugoslavia from 1953 until his death in 1980), it was also once Greece’s largest colony in the Adriatic. Everyone’s fought over Vis – the Venetians, Austrians, French, Germans and even the British.” We also planned to visit a little jewel in the Adriatic, Korcula, where it is believed, Marco Polo was born in 1254. Its tiny fortified old town is surrounded by the sea on three sides and there are many places to swim, walk, or as a change, it’s a great island for some not too strenuous cycling. Of course it would be remiss not to check out some of the special places along Croatia’s mainland coastline so we plan a visit to Skradin in northern Dalmatia – our base to explore the Krka National Park, a wonderful world of waterfalls and forests. History buffs will also relish being able to visit Trogir. The whole town is a Unesco World Heritage site as is the 15th century St Jacob’s Cathedral in Sibenik. This will be literally walking in the footprints of history. Jill Worrall is offering a 19-day tour to Croatia in May, 2017. It includes a 14-day cruise in the Adriatic with daily walking opportunities to suit all fitness level. Above left: St Mark’s Cathedral on the island of Korcula was built of local limestone and carved by the islands’s master stonemasons. Above: right: A third of the Croatian island of Mljet is a national park, in which is a former Benedictine monastery. Middle right: The harbour and town of Hvar. Pink Star Walkers are getting ready to line the streets pink for breast cancer at the 2016 NZ Breast Cancer Foundation Pink Star Walks in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Registrations are now open for the events at www.pinkstarwalk.co.nz, which take place during October (and into November) as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, and are kindly sponsored by Estee Lauder Companies. The annual NZ Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) fundraiser is a non-competitive fun walk, with no training required before participating - just a willingness to join a group of boisterous women, men and children in support of those affected by breast cancer. The walks are held in the twilight hours, providing a unique experience. There is a party atmosphere at the finish line with entertainment provided; walkers are encouraged to celebrate and have a fun evening out together. The NZBCF Pink Star Walks are held in New Zealand’s major cities, and open to all ages. The walking courses are a mix of 5km, 10km or a half marathon (21km) option, depending on location. The course must be walked, not run; with walkers encouraged to dress in pink, with many groups coordinating their costumes as a team and registering to fundraise. Registration is easy through the dedicated event website www.pinkstarwalk.co.nz. The registration fee covers the costs of holding the event only, with walkers encouraged to set up fundraising pages so friends and family can sponsor their efforts. Funds are raised through a combination of entry fees, personal sponsorships and donations. Stacey Morrison, NZBCF Ambassador and radio host from The Hits, along with her co-host Flynny, will www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

MC the events in all three locations, cheering on walkers and handing out medals at the finish lines to those completing the 21km distance options in Auckland and Christchurch. “I’ve been involved with the Pink Star Walks for many years and always enjoy seeing everyone getting together and making an effort with their costumes. “What better way to show your support of those affected by breast cancer than by getting out there and walking the talk!” says Stacey Morrison, who lost her mother to breast cancer at a young age. The Pink Star Walk includes a pre-walk warm-up by instructors from Jett’s Fitness; walkers follow the route marked by pink balloons, and rehydrate via water stations available around the course, manned by volunteers who are there to support and encourage participants. At the conclusion of the walk there is a festive atmosphere with music and entertainment provided by The Ladykillers (Auckland) featuring NZBCF ambassador Jackie Clarke, and Retro Divas (Wellington), and prizes awarded to best dressed individuals and teams, as well as spot prizes. “Our Pink Star Walks are a great way to show your support for friends, family or colleagues affected by breast cancer,” says Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. “The money raised by the three www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

events will help fund support programmes for women with breast cancer including counselling, rehabilitation programmes and funds education for early detection of breast cancer. “Each year more than 3000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, with approximately half detected through mammograms, where a tumour can be found when it is as small as 2mm. A tumour is generally 10 times the size (20mm) before it can be detected by touch, so it’s important that women know they need to be screened from the age of 40 and well into their 70s,” says Mrs Henderson. A platoon of pukeko greeted us on Travis Country Drive, nearby the children’s playground and toilets. Following recent rain, the wetlands were spectacular, reflecting clouds, rushes and flax. The track was very popular, with numerous joggers and walkers taking in the scenery. Volun-

Te Araroa Trail

New river track section takes walkers off road

T

e Araroa now has another section off road along Turitea Road, some 4 kms from the CBD of Palmerston North. Palmerston North City Council has purchased and fenced 700m of reserve along Turitea Stream. The 700m road section is replaced with 1000m of stream-side walking on the left bank of Turitea Stream. The new reserve will be planted up by Green Corridors over the next three years with planting already started in August at the upstream end. The pathway will be maintained as a mown grass strip amongst the plantings until the canopy develops when it will transition to a bush walk. For south bound walkers the new section starts 370m after the first one lane bridge on Turitea Road where walkers will enter the strip through a gate on the left hand side of the road. Walkers will return to the road at a second one lane bridge after 1000m of streamside walking amongst developing and new riparian plantings. After returning to the road there is another 500m of road walking before turning right into Ngahere Park Road.

New Zealand Walk

. Winter trip to Benmore Hut a challenge By Yvonne & Alf Eerden

In the middle of winter Tower Tampers had a tramp at Benmore Station past Springfield, part of the Korowai Torlesse Tussocklands Park.

There was some snow on the mountains, not much as the winter does not seem to have started yet and Canterbury is very dry. It seemed a little cold when we got out of the cars but we all had plenty of warm gear to wear. I have not done this tramp for over eight years. We headed off for a couple of

km’s on the 4WD track and all soon warmed up. A couple of the trampers had warned us that we had to cross the small river a couple of times (we thought they were having us on). At the first crossing of the small river Kishor one of the trampers took his socks and boots off so that he did

not have to walk with wet feet all day. After we crossed the small river twice he did not take his boots off anymore and we did not try to keep our boots dry boulder hopping either as this can be very slippery and we were going to get wet anyway. The group had to cross eight times on the way to the Ben More Hut and the same back. It was a lot of fun as we had not had a tramp like this for a long time. We walked through the beech forest and slowly climbed between the valley. The ferns were very beautiful and green even though it did not seem very moist in the forest. There were patches of mud and just like the river crossings we eventually just walked through the patches of mud as our boots would be cleaned

Walkers asked to report Bream Head robin sightings in the river anyway. It was three hours to the Benmore Hut (we did it in a little less even though we thought we would be longer due to the mud and we were climbing). All of a sudden you could see the bright orange hut through the beech forest. It was a surprise as we all thought we had at least 30 minutes to go until lunch at the four bed hut. After lunch on the return journey we did not see another person but could hear the hunting dogs and the squeal of a wild pig. There were a lot of fantails in the beech forest, that was very sheltered from any wind. It was a great day tramping, a real adventure with the river crossings (although not huge) and the mud patches. It is always good to have a bit of a challenge. A great day out for us all. P

eople using Whangarei’s Bream Head Scenic Reserve can now experience the rare treat of spotting North Island robins (toutouwai) as they walk its bush tracks, and are asked to report their sightings to a dedicated Facebook page. Forty robins were released in the Reserve in May as part of a longstanding Bream Head Conservation Trust programme to return the Reserve to its natural, pre-colonised state. The robins are the first part of a translocation programme that has been many years in the making. Extensive predator control and habitat restoration was required before the Trust could achieve its aim of returning the dawn chorus to Bream Head. Some species, such as the kaka, have self-relocated from offshore islands now that predators have been reduced to low numbers. However, the reintroduction of the robins, along with the whiteheads expected to be translocated in 2017, has been a wellplanned exercise. Bream Head ranger, Adam Willetts, says the extensive preparation necessary to bring the robins to Bream Head began with creating an environment that would support toutouwai and help them to thrive. “The first batch of 20 robins released onto the Reserve in April came from the Pureora Forest and required a number of pre-feeding visits to create an association between humans and food to make monitoring their post release progress easier. “For the purposes of genetic diversity, the 20 robins released in May came from Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf where they were also pre-fed, weighed, sexed and banded before being placed into individual boxes and driven in the cool of night to the Bream Head Scenic Reserve for release.”

Above: Robins carried by volunteers on their way to be released at Bream Head.

The Bream Head Conservation Trust now wants Reserve users to help keep track of the birds and their condition. “Anyone who is in the Bream Head Scenic Reserve or its surrounds can post reports of sightings or the individual band combination of any robin they see on our dedicated Facebook page, ‘Bream Head Robin Monitoring’,” Adam says. “The bands are found on the robins’ legs and we would appreciate details of the colour combinations, but if all people can get is a sighting, they can tell us the approximate location of the bird, and we’ll check it out.” Adult North Island robins are slightly larger than a house sparrow. They have long, thin legs, an erect stance and are a dark slate-grey in colour with a pale grey-white lower breast and belly. Exact colouring depends on age and sex, with males older than three years of age being almost black over the upper parts, and females and most males less than two years old being mainly pale to dark grey above. “Toutouwai often come within a couple of metres of people, so they are generally easy to see if they are around,” Adam says. “We encourage people to enjoy the unique experience of watching these rare birds in the wild, and then get to Bream Head Robin Monitoring as soon as they can to tell us about the bird and let us know how it is doing.”

Italy’s unknown Franciacorta Lombardy’s Lakes, in the north of Italy, are like sparkling jewels ringed by snowy peaks. The diamond in this cluster is the small region of Franciacorta, (pronounced Franchi – a –corta). The area’s name is synonymous with the delicious sparkling wine that is produced there. Franciacorte wines challenge the real thing as they are produced based on the French style of champagne but without the price tag! The vintners strive to achieve quality in every single bottle due to a strict production code of the region’s Franciacorta brand. The highest quality fruit goes into making them and grapes are hand-picked to ensure quality selection. A walking holiday in Franciacorta is a journey on foot to discover the history and process of the region’s sparkling wines. The climate is mild and the landscape gently contours which is harmonious to the neat rows of vines that flourish. Trails skirt vineyards and small villages on this gentle terrain in the lee of a circle of rounded hills. Large and small vineyards welcome walkers in for a tasting. Many have remained in the same family for centuries such as Mosnel, and Berlucchi. The latter is the largest producer in the area yielding four million bottles a year.

When you walk in Franciacorta you immerse into the whole process of this unique wine. Cellars are open to view in ancient country houses and mansions which have had a rebirth from what used to be an economically poor area. Ancient cellars house rows, floor to ceiling, of the different types of Franciacorta sparkling wine. Tasting lunches also showcase the wonderful cheeses and cold meats of the region always washed down with the local bubbles. Don’t bother asking for a still wine as you will only be poured a sparkling in a classy tulip shaped glass. Informative tours of the cellars are a source of pride to the winemakers of this special wine. Harvest is in August and early September. The first pressings are later blended with reserve wines from previous years before the secondary slow natural fermentation in the bottle with yeast and sugar added. The bottles are laid down in the cellar horizontally till maturation is complete then they are placed upside

of Berlucchi operates a mechanised system. Riddling racks are a feature of not just the wineries but most restaurants. Different varieties have different minimal periods of refermentation in the bottle, between 18 to 60 months, longer than any wine of this kind. Once vertical, the yeast sediment sinks to the neck of the bottle. It’s fascinating to watch to the procedure of disgorging it whereby the sediment alone is frozen and extracted. At the end of your tour you can buy a splendid bottle from just Euros 7. Berlucchi were the pioneers of sparkling wine in the region. In 1961 they produced the first vintage of Franciacorta sparkling wine which they aptly

named “61”. The last dusty bottle of that year sits in their cellar in a glass cabinet flanked by millions of bottles of its clone. A weeklong walk not only covers the wine area but also the hills above starting from the delightful town of Brescia. The first two days walking are between 600 and 650m where there are still some vineyards as well as the remains of old castles and ancient sanctuaries. The high point of the Sanctuary of Madonna del Como has the best panoramic views of this trail. After two days in the hills descend to beautiful Lake Iseo and the town of Sulzano on the mainland shore. Wide promenades around the shoreline and views of the mountains, lake and

Wine trails of Italy’s unknown Franciacorta islands make this a wonderful riviera town whose attraction lies in its obscurity, unlike neighbouring Lakes Como and Maggiore. There are regular boat trips across the lake to Peschiera Maraglio on the small inhabited island of Monte Isola (12.8 sq km). There are no cars so walking is the only way to get to other villages on the island and the hilltop monastery.

The island is known for fishing and net making. It’s smaller neighbour is the islet of San Paolo, just big enough for the quaint 15 century convent it is home to. The fourth generation of the Archetti family still build traditional boats on Monte Isola that are entirely hand-made and of the highest quality wooden construction. Net-making is the largest business on the island and employed many more before modern technology replaced traditional nets. The Net Museum is small and unique. It displays the history and craft of net making. Leaving Sulzano you walk to San Pietro monastery built on a marshland by the Cluniac monks who arrived there in the 11th century. They were the first to produce wine in the area as well as other crops. This is the gateway to the Franciacorta vineyards. Trails between hamlets and villages wind through the Franciacorta region for the last two days. There are local ‘agriturismos’ which offer fine accom-

Just 10 minutes from Te Awamutu town centre Mt Kakepuku is a great walk for people of all ages and fitness levels. The carpark is just off Kakepuku Road and is the start of the 3.7km track to the summit viewing tower.

Above: Sunrise from the walking track.

The first 200 metres of the track to a low level viewing tower is lined with native trees on both sides. On a good day the summit of Mt Ruapehu can be seen from here. The track then zig zags up and around the north eastern side of the mountain revealing views of Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and the surrounding farmland across to Mt Maungatautari (Pukeatua) and Mt Te Aroha. About a third of the way up the track flattens out and winds further around the side of the mountain giving a chance to catch your breath before the final uphill section. Seats

Mt Kakepuku is my favourite because: it is only about an hour’s walk to the summit; the track is good and can be walked by people of all ages; and a great view of central North Island including nine mountains. The track is also easy to walk up or down in the dark with a torch if like me you want to experience a sunrise or sunset from the summit. It’s an exercise schedule that would put most 20-somethings to shame, but for the 85-year-old it’s the norm since retiring off a dairy farm two decades ago. A late bloomer on the exercise front – she admits to never doing sport as a child in Holland and being too busy on the farm when she was older – Clasina has made up for lost time. “You’ve got to do something, aye?,” Clasina says when asked what motivated her to begin exercising. In fact she doesn’t struggle for motivation at all, saying she just loves to train. Clasina began exercising by doing the non-competitive two-day walks organised by the IML Walking Association, an international organisation aimed at fostering healthy lifestyles and cultural understanding through a series of walking events around the world. She has not only done the New Zealand leg of the event, held each March in Rotorua, 20 times, but has travelled around the world to walk the overseas versions. Her achievements don’t stop there. At 73 she began competing in the Masters Games across a range of walking, running, jumping and throwing disciplines and has a clutch of medals and records to her name. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Add in some cycling on top of the athletics — she’s done the Round Taupo ride half a dozen times on her own, plus several times as part of a relay team, and ridden the 100km race from Rotorua to Taupo five times. But all that pales in comparison to the 60 marathons she’s clocked up. Marathon number 60 was a biggie – the New York City Marathon last November, that she did with her two grandchildren, who walked the race with her, and another son as a supporter. Judy Wolff from Marathon World Travel, who Clasina travelled with up to New York, says she was stunned when she first met Clasina, finding it hard to believe she was in her 80s. “When many 85-year-olds are suffering from dementia, rocking chair bound and have to be looked after fulltime, this lady is running marathons.” An official travel partner with the New York City Marathon, Judy has guaranteed entry slots to the highly over-subscribed race, providing a stress-free option for runners and walkers wanting to enter this iconic event. that takes in New York’s five boroughs – Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan – Clasina says she was surprised to see how well organised it was. Participants are split over several starting waves and support on the streets comes from aid stations every mile, dozens of bands and an estimated two million spectators. Not content to sit back after com-

AUSTRALIAN GREAT WALKS

AUSTRALIAN GREAT WALKS

Eastern Himalayas in bloom Sikkim is known for its mountainous beauty, temples, chanting monks, flickering candles and flying prayer flags. It’s also famous for forest flowers and when we are there rhododendrons and orchids will be in bloom. To see the saw-tooth silhouette of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, is a sublime experience. We also visit Darjeeling with its skirt of tea plantations.
